I can't remember the order so I'll just write what they played

From the new album:
What I Heard
Mothers in the Night
The End, The End
D-Day
Love Doesn't Frighten Me At All

Hits and songs from pre-1983:
Orchid Club
The Hardest Part
Hanging on the Telephone
Call Me
Heart of Glass
Atomic
One Way or Another
The Tide is High
Rapture

From Debbie's solo album Necessary Evil:
Two Times Blue
Whiteout
You're Too Hot

Taio Cruz cover - Break Your Heart

Interesting setlist ! Though i'd love to hear them doing some earlier songs, from Blondie and Plastic Letters. How sounds the new album ?

In other news, I have to go to a wedding tomorrow. The ceremony is at 1, and then the reception isn't til 6. I could poke someone in the eye for this bit of poor planning, but whatever. Boy What Carries Things is best man, so I will get to make fun of him for having to wear a tux in an outdoor wedding in the middle of June in freakin' St. Louis.

If I end up tossed in the pond at the park where the wedding is, then you know why.

I'm sitting here watching my puppy play. She does this thing where she goes into the kitchen and then runs as fast as she can into the living room, where she literally throws herself on the hard wood floor, rolls over a couple of times, then gets up & runs back into the kitchen to do it all over again...really, what is that about?

Just be thankful your wedding isn't up in the middle up nowhere. Back when I was a few months short of 13, I had to go up to, of all places, western New York to go to my cousin's wedding. Since it was a 6-hour drive to there, I had to stay overnight and me and my family managed to escape-- I mean, leave before my aunt decided to hold a brunch the next day.

I saw Patty Griffin and Buddy Miller at the House of Blues last night. This is the first time I'd gotten around to seeing her, and both she and Buddy were fantastic. Her new album is gospel, and although I hadn't warmed to it, it was incredible live. Buddy also performed his own set, and made a funny speech about how True Blood used Gasoline and Matches in the show, but he didn't understand the vampire thing. Anyway I know a few people here like Patty, so here's my video of Mary from last night:

A homeless woman broke my heart last night. I was walking back from my friend's 21st birthday party in the Mission district of San Francisco. If anyone is even remotely familiar with the bay area, you know the reputation the mission has, so, as a woman walking alone at night, I was trying to walk quickly and without making eye contact with anyone along the way. When I felt someone watching me, I assumed it was a man, and when I heard them clear their throat, I braced myself for the cat call coming (again, woman alone in the mission). The voice that came out was so high and weak and sincere, "I really like your sandals." Nothing else. I wanted so badly to be able to go back and give them to her.

I remember being in San Francisco... it was the first place I went to in the USA with my mum and stepdad... I was rather saddened and scared by it, because I'm simply not used to seeing so many groups of homeless people around a city. :(
Anyway, you've reminded me of a time when a homeless man started playing a harmonica (I think) for my mum and David as we walked past him, but David walked on, saying he only had his visa credit card. The man, being good humoured, held his hand to his chin and looking at mum, saying "what did I do wrong?" in a humorous manner. Mum apologised, explaining that we didn't have any cash on us, but thanked him and wished him well. It turned out that, while mum and I didn't have anything, David did have money on him. :( Honestly, it takes so little from everyone to make so much for one person... I don't understand how people walk past such nice people in need so thoughtlessly.

Why do you tell everyone you got laid off from your last job when you really got fired for stealing?

Why have you never gone to a psychiatrist? Self-diagnosed Asperger's usually just means "I'm a jerk nobody wants to be around, but I don't think I should have to change."

Why did you refuse to allow your fiance to have a bachelor party at a strip club because it made you insecure, and then you slept with a male stripper at yours?

Yep, it's 1005 pm as i write this and the sun is just starting to go down. Granted this is the longest day of the year.

But there is some night here. About 6-7 hours from what I can tell. But for me the sucky part is that i want to see some stars out here. I mean really see stars, not like what I se back home. Have a feeling I need to wait till about 1am for a dark sky! NOw that im adjusting to the time, that might be a reasonable task.

I can't imagine what daylight 24 hrs a day is like. Or nightime 24 hours a day either.

It's probably a good thing that I don't live somewhere with a big homeless population, because I would soon be broke! I've spent a great deal of my life not having much and now I'm at least 'comfortable'. I am not worrying that the utilities will be turned off this month and if I want to go by a CD, I can afford it.
I am sensible. I mean, I know I can't give the grocery and bill money away, but I hate seeing people doing without. Sure, some of these people may be just trying to 'con' people, but others really need help. There have been times for me where I have been a paycheck away from losing a place to live.

One more-

I'm supposed to have plans tonight. Plans that should matter for a number of reasons, not the least of which is the chance to one up a complete jerk. But... I really feel like skipping, putting on the dance, and shipping the Friday night away. Can't decide.

Edit:

Unknown number just texted me and asked me to meet them for drinks at a bar by my house after work. I have guesses about who it is, but it's so much more fun not knowing, so I'm not asking. This plan is getting combined with the shipping and I'm having myself a good night.

I have SO much Stevie/Mac catching up to do. I haven't been on the Ledge in what feels like forever, and so many things have happened to me, both good and bad.

But to start off... my boyfriend and I went to go see Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers last night, and ZZ Top opened for them which is pretty sweet. We were in the first 10 rows, and from "You Don't Know How it Feels" the smell of pot was EVERYWHERE and I felt like crap by the end of the concert, but it was an AMAZING one! I totally rocked out the whole time :D

I've been incredibly busy this whole week. My cousin came on Wednesday night to stay with me for the summer. I've taken her out everyday since with my friends and today we took the metro from springfield to dc, walked around dc for about a year in a half, saw a sniper on top of the whitehouse, and told my cousin if she tried to hop the fence the sniper would snipe her lol (i got pictures too).

P.S.
I no longer have to be a homewrecker because the guy that I like broke up with his gf and...yeah. I'm not dating him yet but he made it clear that he likes me :D
We were at the mall on Wednesday (before la prima came) and I kicked his ass at airhockey so we made a bet: If he loses he has to buy me food, if he wins I have to kiss him (la prima messed this up lol)...I reversed the bet yesterday =]

end of diary

JTIS that TV is dumb.

The kids just discovered my ex's sci fi show is available OnDemand, which I had been trying to avoid having happen - they still miss him really bad, and I knew if they realized they could see him on the TV, it would make for sad pandas and crying.

I was right.

Tonight will be a fun night. And by "fun," I mean emotionally draining and not fun at all. Sigh.

I'll try a short explaination about the wardrobe (weight) comment.
My favorite singer Elvis let his life get out of control. And the last
two years of his life were hell. His weight was very heavy at the end.

Stevie Nicks, almost the same situation, drugs and severe weight gain.
I remember thinking she was going to die in the early 90's.

So the comment about weight in Ms. Wilson's case can be taken in context.
Although her wardrobe could be better without regard to weight.

I remember watching a special on Heart where Ann spoke very candidly about her struggles with her weight, and it brought tears to my eyes. Even in the 70s, when she was thin, she had to really work at it - her body naturally wanted to be heavier, so she basically had to starve herself to stay that small, and she wasn't happy.

When she put on weight, the record execs were awful to her - take a look at the video for "Alone" - they purposely filmed it so that we only see very close-up shots of Ann's face and very long range shots where it's hard to see her at all. She spoke about how they did that on purpose, because they said no one would want to look at her due to her weight, and therefore Nancy should get most of the camera time.

It's a damn shame when someone with a voice as phenomenal as Ann Wilson's has to be "hidden" because other people may not "approve" of her looks. It's nobody's business but her own. She's a class act and she can SING. My gawd, can she SING. I mean - LOOK:

I agree many were awful to her. And I also agree that woman can sing.
But I'm not sure about it being anyone's business but her own. I know
it's totally unfair, and I believe most women are given a much harder
time about gaining weight. But don't you think with the money she and
other stars with the same fame have - couldn't they at least have a dietician
or someone make sure they have the right food to eat.

I don't know if drugs had anything to do with Ann's weight gain. But it sure did
with Elvis' and Stevie Nicks. Too many "yes" people around. No one to tell them
the truth. All the way down to the fans. And by fans, I mean the ones that will
accept anything the artist does, even if it's unhealthy to the very artist they care

I feel like they did Ann Wilson a definite disservice by not showing her more in the 'Alone' video. The difference between seeing her in the videos from the 1985album and the video for "All I Want To Do Is Make Love To You' was a major shock to all the fans I knew. I think if the changes had been seen in 1987, it would have made the weigh issue not such a big deal.

As I don't know enough details about her personal struggle with weight. But for her health's sake I wish she could lose some weight.

Not long ago, I attended a concert by Jimmy Webb. He brought up all the amazing artists he has written for. He then began to tell us about Linda Ronstadt, and how her health was failing....how she had began to struggle with her weight and, being ripped in the press, made the decision to have some sort of gastric bypass, which then lead to the many health issues she has struggled with and continues to endure to this day. He was about in tears as he relayed the phone call he received the night prior with the disturbing news that she might not make it through the recent issues. Just before he began to stroke the keys and sing one of the many songs he had written for her, he asked us all to pray and send good thoughts her way.

My point being, some have personal struggles with weight, either being over or under weight, and until you are in that person's shoes, one should not spout off how they 'wish they'd lose weight so they'd be healthy' etc etc... it doesn't always work that way and there usually are all sorts of reasons behind weight issues. Take a look around, and be thankful if you yourself are healthy and right on target for your weight range. JTIS my opinion.

Saying "couldn't they at least have a dietician or someone make sure they have the right food to eat" is incredibly offensive. It implies that fat people are fat because they somehow don't "know any better," and therefore need someone to tell them what to do with their own bodies. It neglects to account for the wide variety of other reasons that could cause weight gain, and while it's true that not everyone is overweight due to a medical condition they can't control, you don't KNOW for sure that the person you are looking at doesn't have one of them.

Besides, if you know it's totally unfair, why would you participate in perpetuating that unfairness?

What "truth"? Do you think fat people don't know they're fat or something? Like, "Hey, Zombie, uh...dunno how to break it to you, but you're kinda fat..." and then I'm going to be all, "WAIT. WHAT? I'M FAT? OMG, NO WAY. I HAD NO IDEA. Thank you, kind observer, for pointing out I have a huge ass, or I might never have noticed it on my own - good thing I had someone to let me in on the truth."

C'mon, dude.

This is what's called "concern trolling." A judgment or personal attack disguised as heartfelt worry is still a judgment or personal attack.

It's not your job to police a stranger's health. And you can't judge the relative health of someone based entirely on their outward physical appearance. A thin person is not automatically healthy, just as a fat person is not automatically unhealthy.

And I agree Zombie, Ann's voice is great.

Yes, it is. And it's just as good now as it was when she was starving herself to fit someone else's standard of beauty.

The reason I mentioned a dietician was because "stars" have the money
(or should have) for someone to take care of them in that way. Of course
over eating is not the only cause, but it usually plays a significant
role.

And to relate to you saying I implied that "fat people are fat because somehow
they don't know any better and need someone to tell them..." Well sometimes
when it comes to stars THEY DO NEED SOMONE TO TELL THEM. The reason I
bring up Elvis in this thread is because he didn't have people around him to tell
him the truth. His people hid the bad reviews he got in the last few years of his
life. Did Elvis know he was in trouble? I'm sure he did, but he seemed obilvious
to just how bad it was (had he a realistic view of himself, he never would have
agreed to the last TV special in '77).

And I do care what you and Buttercookie think. Very few of my post are harsh
on people (stars). And a few of my best friends in real life are overweight. And
one of them can at least blame his love of food for the problem. Sometimes you
just have to back away from the table. Maybe that third helping of pie isn't good

How nice for your overweight best friends to have such a supportive and non judgmental friend. Are you serious when you say this? From where I sit, I see lots of folks struggling with a few lbs (or ten or twenty...). Someone who is significantly overweight is not necessary going to be able to "back away from the table." Life is not black and white and things are not always so simple.

The fact that you mentioned it to begin with and then are trying to back peddle out of the situation is what gets me. When I see an overweight person in a belly shirt, I sometimes wish I could offer my advice, especially if it's a young girl. But then, I kind of feel that way about belly shirts on ANYONE, for that matter. I haven't seen the performance you are referring to, but I am thinking that whatever Ann Wilson was wearing, it was not obscene or inappropriate.

Okay. Let me try this again.

Just because you have the money for something does not mean you have to spend it on that something. If someone has the money to hire a dietician and wants to do that, then more power to them. If they choose not to spend their money on a dietician, then more power to them on that, as well. It is the person's individual choice.

Fat shaming is not an effective motivator. Making someone feel bad for how they look is not an effective motivator. And just because Elvis may have had issues that left him unable to see things clearly does not mean that all overweight famous people are the same way.

And I don't care if ALL of your friends are fat - having a fat friend does not mean you're not showing bias, like just having a black friend doesn't mean someone's not still capable of being racist.

If your friend's love of food is a "problem," it is HIS "problem," not yours, unless he asks you for help in changing his eating habits. But no one has to back away from the table just because you think they should, and whether or not that third helping of pie is a "good" idea, if I want it, I'm going to eat it - it's my body, it's nothing to do with you.

Do you see what I am saying? Just because you have a problem with what other people weigh does not mean that they have to have that same problem with their own weight. And it doesn't mean you get to make judgments.

I'm about as good as Elvis' friends when it comes to that, a big chicken. And
it would be a lot easier to "feel" for them if they themselves didn't moan about

me. We've all got our own problems, I sure have my share. But if you hear a person

it. When people talk about losing weight and don't do anything about it, what
do you think is going to happen? And I'm talking about people I know, not
Ms. Wilson. And btw I'm talking about grown ups here not children. I'd never
say anything to a child about their weight. I am not a mean person. Look through
my post.

As to what Ann was wearing you're right it wasn't obscene or inappropriate.
Don't try and put words into my mouth. I do a good enough job at getting in
trouble without you adding to it. I just thought she could wear something that
would make her look more appealing. Maybe I'm wrong.

I didn't say that you were talking about children. I said that *I* struggle when I see a teenager wearing something that is unflattering and sexist. And I also didn't imply that you spoke in any manner to your very overweight friends. What I was implying is that most people wouldn't want their best friends thinking thoughts about them like, "step away from the table."

As I said, you are entitled to your own thoughts and feelings. I have spent too much time helping people through eating disorders. They are extremely hard to treat and the damage is deep.

As an aside, my sister is quite heavy (300+) and it has been difficult to watch her struggle with her weight. It can't have been easy for her to grow up with a younger brother and sister who were naturally thin with no effort. So, I get what it means to be around people who complain about their weight and then do nothing to make it better. However, I have come to learn that this is THEIR problem and it's not up to me to *fix* it (though that is usually my MO).

You say "unless he ask for my help". He's the one who brings his weight up, not
me. We've all got our own problems, I sure have my share. But if you hear a person
you know complaining about this particular problem, and then you see them eating
multiple helpings of food (at one of my parties). And then they wonder why they
can't lose weight???

I do see what you're saying though.

All I have to go on here are your words - you didn't say anything about your friend's own opinions on his own weight, just that you have friends that are overweight and one of them can blame his love of food for it.

It is frustrating to listen to someone complain about something incessantly and then not do anything to change it, I agree. But that still doesn't give any of us the right to be the fat police for anyone else. We're all entitled to our opinions, be they valid or not - what's important is to try to be aware of our biases and think before we open our mouths. In my opinion, anyway.

Watched Heart's Behind The Music (Remastered) tonight. Pretty cool, but I guess
they couldn't make the show if musicians didn't complain. And I'm not going to
say something rude about someone's weight, but she needs help with
wardrobe. Those black tent shirts aren't helping.

what a mess this turned into.

FWIW, i agree with this, and i took this as less a comment on her weight and more as a comment on her wardrobe, which, much like stevie's, does not flatter her figure.

while ann has no responsibility to wear clothes that i think look good, a person's wardrobe says a lot about their personality and how they feel about their body. ann's clothing seems like an expression of shame and an attempt to hide herself, which is really too bad because she is one of the most talented musicians alive and arguably the best voice in rock.

as far as the fat-shaming conversation goes ... i do feel that at a certain point, if you are a friend of a fat person who complains about his/her weight but does nothing about it, you have permission to say STFU and step away from the cheeseburger. and i say that as a fat person who has had a friend say STFU, step away from the cheeseburger, and get your fat ass on your bike. or in the pool. or out for a jog. i have no problem with this because at the end of the day, even if i do have a food-related pathology (never been diagnosed, but pringles disorder is a thing, right?), i recognize and accept the cause and effect relationship between overeating/sedentariness (not a word!) and being faaaaaat.

zombie - you are right that nobody who's fat is unaware of their fatness, but sometimes it does take a friend to point out contradictory behavior, such as continuing to overeat while complaining about being overweight. in my mind, that is the definition of a good friend - someone who is willing and strong enough to put the warm fuzzies aside for a moment and knock you upside the head with the cold, hard truth.

jannie - is there anyone on this planet who is nonjudgmental? calling someone judgmental these days has pretty much the same connotation as calling someone a bigot, which is a little absurd. everyone is judgmental, or, to use a less loaded term, discerning. everyone has a set of standards they hold themselves and others to, and implying that iamnotafraid is a bad friend because he bristles at his friend's refusal to change something that he himself is unhappy with is silly. what is the value in being "supportive" if it fosters a friend's unhappiness and unhealthiness?

somewhere along the way, "overweight" became a new untouchable minority in our culture, as if someone is simply born fat, just as someone is born black or born gay. of course there is a vast spectrum of body types - i could lose 60 pounds, but i'd still be a short, broad-shouldered broad, whereas my brother is a foot taller and has to work to put on weight - but by and large, having a BMI in the obese range is a choice. again, i am not speaking from a lofty, skinny-bitch perch. i have a BMI of 36. i have struggled with my weight since a kid named jason fitzgerald first called me fat in 4th grade (funnily enough, i was not fat then, but i am now). however, i now exercise every day. i have to think about everything i eat because i was not taught healthy eating habits growing up. i know firsthand that the damage of eating disorders is deep, and quitting overeating is different from, say, quitting smoking because we need to eat to survive. so a person with an eating disorder faces his/her demon multiple times a day. i get that. but i do not think that it is an insurmountable obstacle for most people, nor do i think that treating it as such is beneficial to anyone.

You know, because of the field I am in, I do work with extremely NON-judgmental and empathetic people. Of course, that's a good thing, but it also contributes to my idea that most everyone either is or should be that way too. I know that I have to work really hard at it because of what I do, and I shouldn't sound holier-than-thou because I do have my own biases. So, you're right- everyone has some level of judgment-passing (I'm hurrying- at work-can't think of better words right now). What bugs me is when someone passes a judgment (either in an obvious way or a subtle way) and then doesn't acknowlege or own up to their feelings. All that being said, this is a Fleetwood Mac fan message board and not a place to wax poetic on empathy, diversity, and so on.

For what it's worth, I do believe one can be a supportive friend and still be able to SAY, "you know you seem to be awfully unhappy about your weight and I notice you sure do eat a lot..." or some variation of that. I don't think that we should tippy toe around people. But to comment on Anne Wilson's unflattering wardrobe choice felt catty and mean spirited to me, hence my responses.

You know I've been thinking about this and I really don't think it's true. Fat jokes are made every day, you hear them on TV, in films, on the street, in your office. Some aren't too bad but some are really mean-spirited and nasty. I know a few people got upset here, but in general I really don't think being fat is considered untouchable at all, it's ridiculed and looked down upon all the time. You only have to glance at a copy of Heat or any magazine to see how shameful it's considered.

But anyway, I don't really want to get into the argument because I don't really care any more than that, but I was watching an interview today with Sharon Osbourne talking about getting a gastric band and it sounds pretty horrible, although it worked for her. She was saying to her that food was an addiction and unlike the treatment for other addictions you can't give up food altogether, you still have to eat every day, which I thought was an interesting way of looking at it and echoed what Carrie said in her post.

you're wrong and i hate you!

you're right, in many ways fat people are a free for all. i was thinking specifically and speaking generally. i don't know heat magazine, but i assume it's a gossip mag? in that case, there really isn't much that's off limits for those rags, tho i know what you mean. however, many people do treat it as an untouchable topic -- just see the comments in this thread -- and i don't think that's helpful for anybody.

on the topic of obesity, the atlantic had an interesting article on it a couple months ago:

http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2010/05/beating-obesity/8017/

i don't agree with everything he has to say, but it's still an interesting look at the issue from someone who has firsthand experience with it.

Yo, Ohio. Good post. I'm not going to quote the whole thing because you know why you rock.

My issue isn't with friends telling friends that if they're going to complain, they need to start acting, though. My issue is with this...

what a mess this turned into.

FWIW, i agree with this, and i took this as less a comment on her weight and more as a comment on her wardrobe, which, much like stevie's, does not flatter her figure.

... the fact that the original comment was, like you said, about iamnotafraid not liking Ann's wardrobe choices. When he was called out on that, though, a new front came out, the "I'm concerned for her health" front.

I really f*cking hate the "I'm concerned for her health" front.

No, random person on the street complaining about fat people, you're not mad because this girl you don't know is setting herself up for heart disease and type II diabetes. I don't hear you complaining about that pretty little anorexic cocktail waitress who served you drinks last night. Unless, of course, her bones were showing. Then it's just gross. Then she needs help.

The truth is, eating problems are fine as long as the woman courting them is, too. So no, you're not mad that fat people are hurting their health, you're mad because you have to look at fat people, and damn, when they don't wear clothes that hide the fat, you have to see it EVEN MORE! So own up to it when you're called out, don't hide behind a facade that you're just a concerned citizen. Or, if you're going to hide behind that facade, please don't torture me by going on about the importance of real talk and honesty about people with weight problems. I live in a city of hipsters. There's only so much irony I can take in one day.

sorry, but jannie is far from that:distress:~i have always found her to be anything but that~

I wasn't calling her that, I was thinking she called me that.

And LikeAWillow I can feel both, she should take care of herself for
appearance sake and health. Actually everytime I see Ms. Wilson I
feel some of both. I bet if she took care of herself she'd be happier.
Though all those Behind The Music shows have artist complaining
(as to what I meant in my original post).

This topic has really brought out some strong feelings from many of
you. And I wish I'd been a little more careful how I worded my original
post. But even if it seemed harsh, it was true from my point of view. At
some points in her career, I could have said the same about Stevie. Though
the older someone gets, I think they should get a little more slack.

Walk a mile in my shoes before you judge me. I know there are many reasons
for weight gain. But anyone being honest would have to admit some are
just too lazy to do something about it. I have friends that fit in both catagories.
Some can't seem to lose weight no matter what they do. And others have no
will or are just too lazy to do anything about it.

More cake anyone?

Believe me, my values do play a role in my work and I spend a lot of time examining them on my own and in clinical supervision. I remember writing a lengthy paper in graduate school, alllll about my values; where they originated and how they could impact my work. I don't think you're picking on me, Carrie. We've "known" each other for several years and I'm sure you know by now where my motivation comes from. Being a therapist does not mean that I sit in "non judgment" and give a pardon for ****ty behavior. Believe it or not, I am actually a confrontational therapist; meaning, I have no problem being reality based with my clients.

The term "non judgmental" can hold different meanings for everyone. The expectation for clinicians from the NASW Code of Ethics:

Social workers also should be aware of the impact on ethical decision making of their clients’ and their own personal values and cultural and religious beliefs and practices. They should be aware of any conflicts between personal and professional values and deal with them responsibly.

So, MY responsibility is to make sure that my biases, values, and judgments don't impact the client's treatment.

Is imnotafraid or anyone else on The Ledge bound by this? ;) Of course not. I am not saying that imnotafraid is catty, but I thought that mentioning AW's outfit was mean spirited and I commented on that.

I need to stop commenting about this though, because I am sounding like I am speaking from waaay up on a high horse, and I don't want that. I do much better when I am *speaking*, rather than writing.

Hi, everybody! I'm Zombie and I'm a fatass! When I make comments about fat shaming, and why certain comments working from a thin perspective are offensive and suchlike, I am speaking as a fatass thoroughly familiar with the process of carting a fat ass around on a day to day basis.

< anecdata >
3 years ago or more, I was twice the size I am now. I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia and a few other health-related problems, and after being on several medications that were supposed to help that, I got even fatter. And it didn't actually help. So...I changed tactics and lost about 80 pounds. It was hard work, and though I live with a constant low level of pain all day, every day, I do feel much better now.

But I'm still not thin. I'll never be thin, even if I lost another 80 pounds. I have wide hips and big tits and that's just the way it goes. But f*ck you, I look good. And I looked good when I was twice this size, too. Because I like me. I'm awesome.

And no, I am not healthy - but it's not to do with my weight. I can't cure FMS. I'll have that forever. While I found that reducing the size of my ass took a lot of pressure off of my joints and muscles and did help me feel better, even if I lost another 80 pounds, I'm still gonna hurt. < / anecdata >

as far as the fat-shaming conversation goes ... i do feel that at a certain point, if you are a friend of a fat person who complains about his/her weight but does nothing about it, you have permission to say STFU and step away from the cheeseburger. and i say that as a fat person who has had a friend say STFU, step away from the cheeseburger, and get your fat ass on your bike. or in the pool. or out for a jog. i have no problem with this because at the end of the day, even if i do have a food-related pathology (never been diagnosed, but pringles disorder is a thing, right?), i recognize and accept the cause and effect relationship between overeating/sedentariness (not a word!) and being faaaaaat.

zombie - you are right that nobody who's fat is unaware of their fatness, but sometimes it does take a friend to point out contradictory behavior, such as continuing to overeat while complaining about being overweight. in my mind, that is the definition of a good friend - someone who is willing and strong enough to put the warm fuzzies aside for a moment and knock you upside the head with the cold, hard truth.

If you have a friend that complains constantly but doesn't actually do anything about it, then yeah - by all means, say something. I said that before.

But the comments aren't necessary when someone isn't complaining or asking for help or whatever - then it's just saying stuff to say it, and quite often, the motivations behind saying that stuff are not so pure. I'm pretty positive that no one here would ever even think of telling an overweight complete stranger in line at the Starbucks that a gallon sized mochacino frappalatte or whatever-the-f*ck-I-don't-go-to-Starbucks-and-it-shows might not be a healthy choice, but commenting on a celebrity's weight in a disparaging manner is sort of like that - we don't know Ann Wilson, we don't know 90s Stevie, etc.

Of course, the random stranger (http://www.bfdblog.com/2009/12/23/dear-strangers-at-lunch-you-should-lose-weight/) thing DOES happen (http://www.bfdblog.com/2010/05/13/concern-trolling-via-post-it-note/), and quite a lot (http://www.bfdblog.com/2010/06/07/youre-fat-your-car-sucks-im-a-jackass/). Clicky links for just three examples.

And Marissa put it very well when she addressed the "I'm just concerned for your health" line, so I won't repeat that.

somewhere along the way, "overweight" became a new untouchable minority in our culture, as if someone is simply born fat, just as someone is born black or born gay. of course there is a vast spectrum of body types - i could lose 60 pounds, but i'd still be a short, broad-shouldered broad, whereas my brother is a foot taller and has to work to put on weight - but by and large, having a BMI in the obese range is a choice. again, i am not speaking from a lofty, skinny-bitch perch. i have a BMI of 36. i have struggled with my weight since a kid named jason fitzgerald first called me fat in 4th grade (funnily enough, i was not fat then, but i am now). however, i now exercise every day. i have to think about everything i eat because i was not taught healthy eating habits growing up. i know firsthand that the damage of eating disorders is deep, and quitting overeating is different from, say, quitting smoking because we need to eat to survive. so a person with an eating disorder faces his/her demon multiple times a day. i get that. but i do not think that it is an insurmountable obstacle for most people, nor do i think that treating it as such is beneficial to anyone.

JTIS.

When we talk like this, we are working from the position that having that BMI* is OMG AWFUL. As long as someone is comfortable, healthy and happy at whatever weight they are, it shouldn't matter. That is my point with the fat shaming conversation.

Jason Fitzgerald fat shamed you for no reason, and you still carry that with you. Kids in school fat shamed me for no reason, and I still carry that. Even if we WERE fat back then, it would still be for no reason, because it's wrong.

I was not comfortable at my higher weight, so I lost it. Someone else may be comfortable at that weight, though, and they don't need to lose it. Just because something isn't always insurmountable doesn't mean it's still always necessary.

Yes, some fat people are fat because they eat too much. Some people are fat because they have thyroid issues. Some people are fat because they don't exercise. Some people are fat because they're fat. It happens. It's not up to the hoi polloi to pass judgment on that unless that judgment is asked for, as in, "I hate wearing this size 20, I wish I could lose weight" - "Okay, then STFU and put down the cheeseburger."

*I am not going to get into why the BMI thing is actually incredibly damaging and mostly bogus unless someone is curious, so I'm putting this down here as a disclaimer - I reference the BMI because Carrie used it and I am trying to make my responses relate as well as possible to what others are saying. I do not think that the BMI system as it currently stands is an accurate or useful system in any way.

you're wrong and i hate you!

you're right, in many ways fat people are a free for all. i was thinking specifically and speaking generally. i don't know heat magazine, but i assume it's a gossip mag? in that case, there really isn't much that's off limits for those rags, tho i know what you mean. however, many people do treat it as an untouchable topic -- just see the comments in this thread -- and i don't think that's helpful for anybody.

on the topic of obesity, the atlantic had an interesting article on it a couple months ago:

http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2010/05/beating-obesity/8017/

i don't agree with everything he has to say, but it's still an interesting look at the issue from someone who has firsthand experience with it.

It's not an untouchable subject. I'm not saying we shouldn't discuss weight issues. In fact, I'm saying the opposite, since I'm here discussing weight issues. I'm saying that when we discuss these things, we need to examine our motives for our reactions and put a little more thought into what we say before we say it - that way, our discussions can be a little more productive.

But yeah - fat people are definitely one of the last acceptable groups to bash, no matter what venue we're speaking about - gossip mag or 'net forum or conversation at the dinner table or evening news (count how many headless fatties you see on the next OMG OBESITY CRISIS news report), and that's why I think it's important to have conversations like this, because these ideas get ingrained early and they cause pain when they shouldn't have to.

If I might proffer a few links which may be of interest, here are some sites that I frequent that deal with body positivity, fat acceptance, and the Health at Every Size movement. I do not always agree with EVERYTHING said on these sites, but they do offer interesting food for thought (ha - reference joke!)

I'm not saying everyone should be fat or everyone should be thin. Everyone should do what is right for them. And if the sight of my fat ass offends anyone too mightily, then don't look at it. ;)

And oddly enough and as an aside, I learned much more about learning to love myself and how I look from my size 00 little sister. I also learned that not all thin people are healthy just because they're thin. She's a recovering anorectic and bulimic who now works as a personal trainer and devotes a lot of her energy towards eating disorder activism & body positivity, whether you're a size 00 or a size 28. We look nothing alike, and I often joke that she got all the supermodel in the family, but while she IS very thin, she's no longer an unhealthy thin. She rocks & she's one of my heroes.

But don't tell her I said that because while we may look nothing alike, we've got very similar personalities and she'd be tempted to punch me in the neck for being so mushy.

I think it's healthy, to talk about your weight.

Me, I've been 30 lbs overweight, pretty much my entire life. I'm 5'10". Gradually, I'd grown to 215, three years ago. People always thought of me as a big, strong guy, but I always knew I had a small frame. Well, three years ago, I was at my aunt's house, for dinner. Never one to mince words, she just up and told me that I was getting way too fat.

Well, I heeded her advice, and lost about 30 lbs. A nice start, but I stopped at the 30. Cut to last fall, and I had sort of an epiphany. I decided that I wanted to be in charge of my body, from here on out. I cut out most red meat and bread, and started eating lots of veggies. At least 2-3 liters of water a day.

Well, I'm now 135 lbs. 80 lbs lower than 3 years ago. Wearing 27" jeans! Almost too skinny, but I don't care. I feel like a million bucks now! My cholesterol has dropped 93 points!!!, and my blood pressure 20! My family is worried that I'm too thin now, and on me to gain weight, but I told them the other day, to mind their own business. I have one friend who insists I'm anorexic, but he's obese, so I just take his criticism with a grain of salt. Yeah, he eats Steak and Shake at 4AM, and is probably 350, so who's got the problem here? My skinny friend pointed out, "David, have you noticed that everyone that has a problem with your weight loss, is heavy? Our skinny friends think you look great, but the heavy ones think you have a problem!"

I don't judge others for their weight, either. My weight loss is about ME, and only ME.

Yo, Ohio. Good post. I'm not going to quote the whole thing because you know why you rock.

My issue isn't with friends telling friends that if they're going to complain, they need to start acting, though. My issue is with this...

... the fact that the original comment was, like you said, about iamnotafraid not liking Ann's wardrobe choices.

Damn it LikeAWillow, stop making sense! It makes it all that much harder for us to disagree!

Getting away from the fat stuff for a moment, am I the only one extremely confused by the Volvo/Twilight TV spots?

Why does this exist? I mean, I understand wanting to cash in on the incredible amount of money to be made by slapping Jacob or Edward or Bella on ANYTHING, but...Volvo? How many 13 year old girls y'all know can afford a Volvo? Or drive one that they win in some strange movie tie-in game? Perhaps this is only for the worrisome and creepy over-30 OMG TEAM EDWARD or OMG TEAM JACOB set, but still...

<object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/4QuHXfgWxGU&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/4QuHXfgWxGU&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object>

...wha?

Every time the car pops up, I just giggle madly. IT'S. SO. DRAMATIC. Like the Volvo is a new character in the film or something - sparklepire, shirtless faux Native American wolfboy, the wooden girl, and introducing...sleek and shiny midsize SUV!

I'm Team Volvo now. Screw Jacob & Edward, I think Bella should get it on with the SUV. At least SUVs are supposed to carry you around so you don't walk anywhere, and when they never wear shirts, you don't think that's weird, because it's an SUV, it doesn't wear shirts?

This was my first time to Ireland, actually first trip to Europe. This place is really beautiful and at first i didn't think we'd have enough to do for 2 weeks and i'm ready to stay another 2 weeks.

I came with family and we rented a house in County Clare, which is on the west coast of Ireland. This house was steps, and i mean steps away from the water just south of the Cliffs of Moher. We took many day trips to different parts of the western half of Ireland and I went with some people to Dublin for 2 days. It was weird knowing i drove across an entire country in 4 hours!

Anyway, love, love the scenery. I think what struck me most was just how many cow and sheep meadows there are. Seriously, there is one about 20 ft from my bedroom window. I've seen enough sheep and cows to last me awhile!

I have many wonderful pictures. Took something close to 1500 pics, but i am too lazy to upload now. ALthough that could change once i start packing.

Highly recommend this place to anyone, especially if it's your first trip overseas. I even drove! Although that took some getting used to. I'm afraid when i go to get in the car when i get home tomorrow, i'll keep going to the right side and try to drive on the left.

Where did your friend stay? Are you enjoying your time in SF? THat's probably one of my 3 favorite places in all of the US. I could and would move there in a heartbeat.

Your nephew's in Hayward? That's so exciting. I'm actually there fairly often for work. It's sad that I'm not too surprised he was robbed twice. Oakland's a strange place--it can be terrifying, or it can be oddly heartwarming.

The other day, for example, I was wakling down the stairs at an Oakland BART station... this guy who was pretty obviously a gang member (I'm not just being a jerk, the area I was in is notorious) was walking beside me. Somehow we started racing like two little kids to see who could make it down these steps first. I won because I jumped and skipped the last three. We were laughing at each other and his parting words were, and I quote, "You're fine, but you're real, too." Thank you, sir. Please protect me when this city blows up in riots next week.

Where in Dublin? Are you going to Trinity? Walked around that campus and that was beautiful. Dublin was a lot of fun. I only slept 1.5 hours, but part of that had to do with the location of my hotel room just above a late night bar as they call it. It was the night Germany beat England and people were partying in the streets till literally 5am. Are you doing a spring or fall semester? They get a LOT of sun in the spring/summer. It's about 11pm here now and still not completely dark out.

Oh and SF. I can go on and on. I stayed with a friend in San Jose back in 2001, then last year in Walnut Creek and I also stayed in Palo Alto for a few days and just did all sorts of stuff. You have to drive up the coast just north of the Golden Gate up to Stinson Beach if you haven't already done so. It was probably some of the craziest driving, but so exhillirating. And then I drove down the coast from Half Moon Bay down to Santa Cruz and onward to Monterey. My favorite aquarium in the US is there. Have you been up to Calistoga yet? I went with my friend to a hot springs and that was cool. Ugh..you make me want to go back. Although i was in LA earlier this year. I think i really need to give up being a jersey girl and become a california girl.

I just got back from Princeton record exchange. I love that place! I was really happy with their selection of mac stuff! I walked out with 3 records. Kiln House, Future Games (Yellow COVER!!! :woohoo: ) and BUCKINGHAM NICKS! I was so excited to find it! It's the gatefold that opens up. :) That place has so many treasures. They also had a brand new GOS on vinyl... I didn't even realize that existed! I had spent enough money for the day though.

Yesterday was awul, and let me tell you why.

There was this guy, Chris, who was in my math class and I was becoming friendly with. When i met him one day during summer session to give him something, I mentioned about us going to the movies yesterday and he said yes. Over the next week, we basically planned out what'd go down and it'd be where he picked me up.

Come yesterday, he told he'd be out of work at 3, but come 4 (the movie was at 4:20), he called to tell me that he gotten out of "work" (he said he worked as some sort of nurse, but the background noise on the phone sounded more like a party) and that he was cancelling cause he was gonna meet someone at 6.

All I can say is can you say "stupid, lying dirtbag"?

First time. Store employee got a picture; she was doing an album signing in Toronto before playing at Pride later that night. She showed up late, but I was one of the first ten people in line.

Conversation went like this:
C: Hi, sweetheaaaawt!
Me: Hey, Cyn! Um.

She started signing the cd, so I asked for a hug. My only chance, right? And she's still fresh, so I knew she wouldn't throw me out. She finished signing and held out her arms. If you had seen her expression, you would have whacked her. She was so cute. I gave her a hug and took that opportunity to thank her for everything her music has done for me. All the same, Rhiannon, but it obviously never stops being meaningful to hear that from people. She wasn't able to personalize everyone's album, but before I left she went, "Whats ya name?" and added it to her signature. :D

Got my camera back from the store guy. Almost whacked him for taking such a ****ty picture. I'm sure others got pictures; I met a couple of people in line, so they might have something.

Honestly, no freak out. I think if I had never seen her before, I would have been like, fhdsjhffffffffffff. She's a master at making people feel comfortable, so I wasn't nervous or flustered at all. It was more like meeting with an old friend.

I'd probably fall out the window, too. How cool would that be? I've met a few of my favorite musicians and they've invariably been really cool so far, which is nice. It'd be awful if you got the chance to say hi to someone you really admire and they were jerkfaces. It's odd, though - even though I've never met Stevie or Lindsey, Lindsey somehow seems more approachable than Stevie does, even though I kind of think of Lindsey as the "grumpy" one.

JTIS that I have been in my new house for like 2 weeks now, and the stove/oven is broken, and my landlord is a doucherocket of epic proportions who keeps dicking around about fixing it, and that is really annoying.

But it has forced me to come up with creative ways to make food that doesn't suck with naught but my microwave, various Hello Kitty small appliances, George Foreman grill, and groovy giant Crock Pot.

Making pasta in the microwave is not ideal, but will do. But I did manage to modify my usual homemade Bolognese enough to approximate an actually decent microwave version! That was cool. I am not going to try to make any of my other usual pasta sauces in the microwave, though, because the ingredients are spendy and if I muck it up in the nuker, I will be out money and also grumpy.

But the major revelation? NOW I CAN MAKE AN OMELETTE! I love cooking, and I am a pretty advanced chef (yeah, that's right, betch, you just watch me thicken a cream sauce with a beurre manié without it tasting floury - go on, watch me!), but I cannot for the life of my consistently make an omelette that doesn't fall apart. Sure, I can do it every once in a while, and then I don't want to eat it because it's folded so nicely and it's not ripped up with all the good stuff oozing out of the middle, but I can't do it every time. More like...1 in 5.

But it turns out if you use a glass pie plate in the microwave on half-power, you make a perfect little egg circle that folds over with no problem. SCORE!

Yeah, I'm easily pleased.

Next time on Zombie Improvises the **** Out of Stuff, individual quiche au fromage in the Hello Kitty waffle iron! Can she do it? Only time will tell. Oh, the suspense!

I was just reminded of this and watched it again, so I thought I would share. This bit is one of the funniest things I have EVER seen in my life. Enjoy!

I was driving by myself today when Edge of 17 came on. Like a good little chiffon head, I cranked it up as though I don't have forty different versions of it on CD's already. I truly do love that song- it reminds me of being young!

Just thought I'd share! :)

When I hear it on the radio, it's unexpected- and it makes me think other people love her too. :o Michelle, I would LOVE to go to a Stevie show with you and Maria- we would have so much fun.

Been feeling depressed and just plain useless lately. No one wants me for a job, and now I won't be able to get a real job when I graduate. :(

i know! or when the DJ gives some tidbits of information about her! haha!

i agree! we don't even have to have a stevie concert to get together. i'm down with getting together, playing stevie music (bring your tambo) and dancing around like fools!

I can usually get the family condo in Myrtle Beach after September. You guys should think of coming down for a long week-end. Maria has stayed at there before- it's huge.

What do you do- what type of work are you looking for? It's so hard to find work now- too much competition.

Vacationing in the San Francisco area, and went to the Record Plant in Sausalito. I liked how there were cobwebs everywhere! It's a shame no one's using it anymore. I know it's much cheaper these days with computer technology, but it's just not the same.

It's even worse here on LI, be thankful you left (and what a coincidence: I just applied to a temp agency in one of those office parks in Holbrook). I bet I'll get something come the fall, when everyone else leaves to go back to school.

I haven't experienced this kind of problems yet, but i seriously hope you'll find a job soon. There's nothing worst than feeling useless, I believe. This global unemployment is starting to scare me : what am I going to do when i'm done with school? It's getting worse and worse...
Anyway, you are at least not useless here at all :)

Am I? People do tell me I'm fun around here, but I guess I'm not.

I dreamed that I met Lindsey last night after a Blondie concert and he used my blackberry to text Christine happy birthday. My brain works in mysterious ways.
