...we're simply debating and defending our points of view. You shouldn't view that as an attack at all, it's not personal. It's okay to have differing opinions as long as everyone's respectful, which I think they have been thus far. :)

I broke my arm yesterday. The stairs in my house are extremely steep (which I hate), and it's not uncomman for people to miss a few. Even if I miss one or two I usually land on me feet. Not so this time. I have an appointment this week for the orthopedist. At least I'll be allowed to pick which color cast I want. :]

OMG, that's terrible! Hope it's not a catastrophic break...

Stairs built according to international building standards should have minimally acceptable tread depths and riser heights, and they should be more-or-less level. Do you own your house or are you renting? If you are renting, check the dimensions of those stairs and see if they are in conformance with the local building codes (for some reason they are regulated on a local level which are generally, but not always, compliant with international standards). If the stairs are illegal or not up to building codes, then your landlord had better have a nice liability policy on this house! Good luck!

so i go back to my "tumblr" thread and see that the rudeness that was given to me was deleted. interesting........

was this even addressed or did someone just decide to delete it?

lemme tell you y i'm getting.........ANNOYED.......

i honestly think i got BANNED because i wasn't scared enough to not mention a name of who i was having a problem with. fine......you banned me. alreight. i haven't cussed anyone since. now that same person quotes me in a thread and that's ok? i really don't care if it was "harmless" or not. y is this person allowed to speak to me at all? if my response to that person wasn't "nice", too dag-on bad. i made it VERY CLEAR BEFORE I GOT BANNED to that person to NEVER quote me again...........guess my feelings of being annoyed and not wanting to talk to someone means nothing, right?

and for the record.........I'M NOT GONNA PUT ANYONE ON "IGNORE"! imo, that's just silly. i'm old enough to bypass someone's comments........but if i clearly say "hey i don't like it when you quote me because you're being hella annoying so STOP" (or something like this) and they continue to do it..........how am i wrong for "going in" on them!? LEAVE ME ALONE!!!!

fast forward to today where i get snotty comments OUTTA NO WHERE! i never said anything remotely sideways to this person, but of course ppl here can say whatever to me and it's all good. noooooooow i go back for reference and it's been deleted. just great!

so ya'll just tell me.......like seriously..........what's up with this?! trying to get under my skin much or what?! i really think i'm being singled out SINCE I CAME BACK TO THIS BOARD! i stay cause i like, and also have met, some wonderful folks! *sigh*

and y do i feel that since i've said something, I'M GONNA BE BANNED AGAIN?! whatever..........do what you will..............

So Austin canceled it's 4th of July fireworks show this year because of our extreme drought & recurring wildfires. I'm heartbroken... the 4th has always been my favorite holiday because it's so much fun, there's no unnecessary stress like Thanksgiving & Christmas often carry, it's warm (I love hot weather!), everyone cooks out, and going to see the symphony & fireworks is just so exciting. I realize it's absolutely smart & necessary to cancel the show this year because of the risk, but I still feel cheated out of my fav holiday! :(

I need to somehow survive the summer without doing anything really stupid. It's been 5 months and I'm still extremely upset about the way a past "relationship" ended. I've been honestly depressed for the first time in my life and I don't know what to do about it. Just when I start to think I'm slowly moving on, I'll absolutely lose it randomly in the car, or before I go to sleep. It's taking all of my energy to resist from buying a plane ticket and visiting him without warning just so that I could get the closure of seeing him.

Dont do something like that , you will feel so stupid after it. I ran after a guy in my class and today i am wondering what i thought i would reach that way exept making a fool out of me. I ran after my "best friend" because i thought i need this friendship, in teh end its better without running after anyone and i wasted a lot of time and energy...

Okay i neeeed to say this.

I am devastated. My Grandma died a few months ago... We lived in the same house in diffrent flats, i s used to visit her all the time...
Now the furniture and everything gets removed (and destroyed of course) from her flat and is thrwon away, exept all the things i could keep. And i got to hear and see it.
I was with her in this flat so often.... i miss her and this is hard to stand ...
saw someone throwing away glasses out of the closet into a bag and breaking them... so i left into my room. and am writing that.
I hate this. soo muuuuuuch

I think that is the saddest part- when someone passes and someone else has to tie up all of the loose ends. I had to do this with my sister's apartment after 9/11. We were not close at all, and it had been many years since we'd spoken, but there was something very chilling about closing out the final chapter of one's life, especially when it ends so suddenly and violently. The apartment was pretty much as it was the day she left it. A friend of a friend had come up from Philadelphia to take her clothing (he was opening a vintage store) and a few pieces of furniture. But I had to do something with the rest of it- books, CDs, cookware, etc. I did manage to disperse most of it to friends, but it was those last few remnants that were most haunting. In a back closet I had found boxes of meticulously packed law school notebooks. What the hell was I going to do with that? All at once it dawned on me how kind of meaningless this all is. I am not one for monuments are leaving legacies, but this symbolized all of the struggle and hard work we put into our lives, yet, at the end of the day, it's just... garbage. Four years of studying, schooling and student loans basically resulted in a few anonymous boxes to be left at the curb along with the rest of the day's trash. It was so disturbing to me that, in an instant, a person's presence on the planet can be completely erased. And it all boiled down to those stupid boxes.

And what was really, really chilling was when I was going through her books, I found that this particular title was pulled out, almost as if she was in the midst of reading it. I believe it was supposed to be a crow flying above St. Paul's Chapel, but it kinda looks like a plane to me...

Lose it how? Lose it like start bawling & sobbing, or lose it like crash your car into a tree or going out to cut a bitch? There's nothing wrong with getting upset or emotional at times. People have this idea that any feelings that aren't happy are bad, and that's just not true. There's also no set time on how long to grieve. As long as you're getting out of bed each day & bathing, you're coping OK. Give yourself permission to be sad for a while.

Not at all. Honestly, when I told people I was going to Amsterdam I got so tired of hearing, "Oooh...Amsterdam!" *Wink, wink, nudge, nudge*
I saw nothing the slightest bit scandalous. Granted, that probably had a lot to do with the fact that I was there with my mom, but it's a gorgeous, clean, well-run city. The entire populace is not lighting up all day.

:shrug::distress:

So sorry for your loss.

To all who gave me supportive words -- thank you so much. This is definitely a "first cut is the deepest" situation and I'm reeling worse than I ever imagined. I'm sure I'll get over it with time -- I'm resilient as hell -- but in the meantime, I feel like I've lost my sense of self, who I am in certain ways.

And what was really, really chilling was when I was going through her books, I found that this particular title was pulled out, almost as if she was in the midst of reading it. I believe it was supposed to be a crow flying above St. Paul's Chapel, but it kinda looks like a plane to me...

So, so eerie... I can't tell you how shocked I was to hear about your sister when you told me in LA. I couldn't even begin to imagine being in the position that you were in and after hearing these details, it's even more mindblowing to me.

Yeah, I fall into random crying/borderline hyperventilating spells. I am no stranger to dark emotions-- my childhood was a full blown sh*tshow and also, as a writer, it's important to cling to the dark and the light. I've gotten pretty good at letting my emotions run their course while also maintaining a certain level of control over my life in terms of productivity, etc. If I was suffering through something, no matter how intense, I was still able to see the beauty in life. Now, the entire world is dull to me. It's unlike anything I've ever experienced... nothing makes me all that happy or all that sad. And it's affecting my daily life -- I've gained weight, I'm losing clumps of hair, I can't sleep. I'm fine with emotions but I'm not fine feeling out of control of my own life because of them. :(

Did you have a good time?

That's what bugged me when people learned I was going to Amsterdam, because I'm just not that kind of person. We did walk through the red light district inadvertently after a long day of walking from gallery to gallery, but that was about all the scandal we had. Well...I tell a lie. We went to the Sex Museum too, but I practically walked around with my eyes closed so I don't think that it counts haha. So uncomfortable :s I was more taken with the architecture than anything else, and especially the local parks which were incredibly stunning. Especially because they all seemed to have a random guy playing Guitar which completely made the atmosphere. There's nothing better than sitting in a tree in Amsterdam listening to a Guitar playing and taking in the surroundings. I didn't even mind when it rained. I had a wonderful time! Thank you for asking :) I was ill with sun stroke on the last day, so rather than traipsing through the last of the galleries myself and another friend sat in the most homely, dingy cafe called Rooie Nelis while the others walked around in the sun. It was absolutely splendid, and I wanted to take the cafe home with me haha.

Yes especially when driving in the outskirts of town/residential roads inland, they come out like crazy when it rains during the summer. When my sister came down to visit last summer she couldn't believe how it sounded at night with all the frogs and toads making their ruckus. If you live near any kind of Florida jungle, you will hear them after a daily rain or at night. It's almost eerie.

The pass between the islands down there is very very deep water and people have drowned being swept out to sea there. More than likely though they've caught that out on the water and transported it in somehow. Big fish don't hang around the shore like that you're correct lol.

Thank you for sharing this with me. So sorry for the loss of your sister. It was pretty helpful to me , to read your story and what you said about someone passing. My Grandma died all out of sudden as well.
You took the words out of my mouth. We gave a lot of things to friends and i kept what i could.
Yesterday i just walked thru this empty flat and had to cry, it was so sad.
my parents are now fixing the flat for themselves and are really mad at me for not helping them with it, what i think is pretty mean but i just cant stay in there long and i hate people seeing me cry as well.
may i ask how old your sister was ?

I am the youngest of five kids (the oldest being 14 years older than me) and I'm the only one to graduate college. Two of my brothers didn't even finish high school. I've always been there for my family and held them in the highest regard, never judging their choices in life. Rather I've considered us all individuals with our own unique paths of life, each of us following our own destiny. However I learned today that all four of them resent me for some reason. They believe I had a much better life than them and was given some great opportunity they never had. I don't understand tho. I worked full-time while going to school, and neither of my parents gave me a dime for school. I was the one left footing the $50,000 bill all by myself. I was the one in class every day. I was the one studying all night long in order to pass. I worked hard to get where I am, yet they all seem to disregard it as luck and blame me for their problems. It reminds me of a line in the TV show Damages: "You try to lead by example and they want you to lead and then they resent you for it. They put you on a pedestal, look up to you and then blame you for the crick in their necks." Anyone else relate?

You've accomplished a lot! As for your siblings being resentful and saying you had it so much better than them, I've seen that a lot in families where there is a big age difference between siblings.
Maybe you should ask them for specific examples of what things they feel were so much harder for them. It's possible that your parents could have been different with them. When they were young parents, it's easy to think they made mistakes. By the time the last child comes along, parents are typically more easygoing.

Reminds me a little of my own situation. I'm made to feel inferior to my brother because he chose to jump straight into a career as soon as he left High School (He's team manager at a company that makes medical equipment and prosthetics), whereas I chose to stick with education and proceed with something I was passionate about. My Dad refuses to believe that being a full time student on a Batchelors Degree Course is any kind of work, and doesn't miss any opportunity to bring up my Brother's successes. I'm not knocking my Brother at all, because where he lacked in educational drive throughout school he makes up for in commitment and effort in his career, which is a good thing because he could have easily followed my cities trend of joblessness, alcoholism and drug addiction. It's my Dad who makes me feel worthless for it. Nothing I've ever done has ever been good enough for him.

On a side note, I adore my new toy I bought myself today :-

Good idea. Remember that your siblings' resentment is about them and not you. They are projecting their failings onto you to abdicate responsibility. Success and happiness are the best "revenge"!

Your father is behaving ignorantly. His assessment of your worth has nothing to do with your actual worth and has more to do with his own selfishness and shortsightedness. Again, success and happiness are the best revenge! You are so going to prove him wrong. Hang in there!

Good idea. Remember that your siblings' resentment is about them and not you. They are projecting their failings onto you to abdicate responsibility. Success and happiness are the best "revenge"!

Exactly. I know someone who makes nasty comments about people who she thinks make more money than her. Hey, nobody MADE you quit school & work a low-paying job for 20 years, honey. Your decision - now you have to live with it. No need to belittle someone else's accomplishments because you're pissed you aren't doing as well.

You think things are going to get better. But then something happens to just prove to you that any faith you had was flawed. And the one person who took it away is too blind and self centred to understand the heartbreak they've caused.

My date with Ashley tonight was amazing. Usually, when I'm on a first date I want it to end really soon. Because they are usually awkward as hell for me. Well I was nervous excited today but it all felt so great, so natural to me. When I'm with a girl I feel equal, and Ashley is just so loving and chill, she doesn't hide anything and keeps it real. We're getting together again Wednesday, I'm so stoked. ;)

My mother is a manipulative prescription drug abuser. My younger brother lives with her and "takes care of her." He is also a weedhead. He resents me for moving away and having my own life. My older brother and the harpy he's married to seem to think that I'm "trying to be better" than they are by...I'm not sure exactly...having a mind of my own? I'm not on speaking terms with any of them.

The issue is that you've deviated from The Way Things Have Always Been Done. Also, if you're the youngest, you probably have a "role" in your family (e.g., the quiet one, or the agreeable one, or the one who'll do whatever we tell him to); if you've stepped out of that role by becoming more educated, assertive, etc., then that'll be met with hostility as well, because you've changed the family dynamic. You'll never make them happy, so just live your life and them be miserable and ugly. It's not your problem.

Nice one! It's a very cool thing to have. I actually squealed with delight when I was a very naughty girl and temporarily removed it from its packaging to have a listen to the dialogue. I'm glad they used the "epic use of the letter V" speech from the beginning of the movie, though I suppose there is so much by the way of sound bites they could have used to increase the range of its content, rather than just the two of them. I feel like such a Geek because I own this, but I like being a Geek so I don't care :p I just really REALLY want one of Severus Snape now :p

AKA enables her so he can continue on with his thing. I can so identify with this. Everyone in my family is "normal" except they're not. And I'm the one with all the problems because I won't keep my mouth shut. So I am finally learning to distance myself so I can stay healthy. I cannot fix them, save them, etc so I am saving myself. I don't have to try to change, help, or rescue the family. We are all adults and we all have our own paths. I have to keep reminding myself not to try to get too deep with them because they don't get it.

When you change people don't like it. If you're getting friction then that means you're doing it right. We all need to make ourselves the #1 priority. Not in a selfish way but in a self-care way. We're no good to anyone if we are empty. Fill your cup. To thine own self be true.

I read up to the 3rd. I'm not a big book person. I really like HP but not a mega fan who reads the books. I enjoy the movies. I know every big HP fan tells me the same thing though about the books.

I don't think it's a phenomenon solely surrounding Harry Potter, though. I always find that the books far outweigh any move that could be spawned from it. After all, no movie could do justice to what the mind is forced to create for itself. The only movie in recent memory that I can think even came close to the majesty of its novel is Lord Of The Rings. But even that had its failings.

On a Fleetwood-related note, I was really touched to learn that he was a fan as well. My mother was going through his things and found a bunch of photos of him a shirt from the Dance, apparently a favorite of his. One of his friends also mentioned that "Dream a Little Dream of Me" was his favorite song (Mamas and the Papas are my other absolute favorites). My uncle has been a loser drug addict and small time dealer my entire life, but I like feeling some small connection to him. Granted, these are not exactly obscure bands, but it's nice to share them--the only things I'd want to share. What an incredible thing that musicians can give us that.

I feel ya my fellow Texan! I'm thinking the same thoughts this year myself. I normally love the heat, but this summer is just brutal. And because of the drought, all my favorite swimming holes have dried up and Lake Travis is so low it's almost impossible to climb down to get in for a dip. So there's no escaping the heat! Hot and sauna-like down in Florida too but thankfully the afternoon rains finally arrived to cool it off some mid-day. What I like about summer here are the monstrous clouds and sky. And how it can be sunny but off in the distance you see dark clouds and sheeting rains falling and it is the coolest thing. A huge rainbow over the bay and water is unlike anything you'd ever see up in Ohio where I'm from.

Fair enough. Have you ever considered a weave? :p

Get a weave, then video "the move" when it moves from side to side when it needs redoing.

And if you can afford that, we have a Shih Tzu child who you're not paying maintenance for. Honsestly, as a gay couple, we should be setting an example that people are wrong to judge us, not getting into quandaries over the kids.

I usually sneer at those who wish they could bypass summer for fall, but I am in fact one of those people this year!

The heat is affecting my productivity. I have taken to working out at 2AM when the a/c finally starts to kick in & during the day it's too hot to sit still & get work done. Between the ridiculous snow/ice we got earlier this year & now this heat & drought, I'm starting to hate this north TX climate for the first time ever.

BTW, over the years I've seen Lake Travis at low levels several times, & I draw satisfaction from the notion that the ugly view is hurting business at the Oasis.:D

Tattoo #4: an infinity symbol on my ring finger to remind me to infinitely love myself before I give my heart to someone else. When the right person comes along, it'll remind me to infinitely love him, too. This tattoo is a dedication to my belief that love (in whatever form) conquers all else -- practicality, heartbreak, intellect. As you all know, I've been devastated over a past relationship and it's really made me lose my sense of self.... I'm trying to fix that.

We went to the beach and into a bookshop that is wall to wall books, it smells divine. We've also solved the! Tonight my parents and I watched a movie on CrackleTV called "The Squid and the Whale." Awful movie (it was no surprise to see later on that Wes Anderson co-produced.). Of course I had no idea going into this that it featured scenes of an adolescent boy, um, inducing himself to expel a certain bodily fluid and subsequently smearing said substance on surfaces around the school. My parents are in their seventies and my mother was puzzled by this. I wanted to DIE. Note to self: do not watch R rated movies with your elderly parents.

Just thought I'd share.

Now I'm old enough to figure out exacvtly what was going on the whole time I'm tempted to buy the first few seasopns on dvd and watch it properly! Sue Ellen is great.

I've seen the trailer for the new Dallas and am suitably impressed. Patrick Duffy has said that he, Linda Gray and Larry Hagman were approched countless times for a new tv or movie version but they always said no because they didn't need the money and so would only do it if they wanted to and would enjoy it and liked the scripts. He's been praising the new scripts, obviously... I'm excited about it but please, NO dream sequences!

Dynasty was just not for me though!

I had thoughts of attempting suicide for the second time on July 16th, so I ended up in the ER at the hospital in the town I live in, and have since been in a state mental hospital facility dealing with the issues that brought me to the point of possibly ending my life.

Been staying positive and hanging in there and trying to improve my outlook on life. I have met many people here who have also been through much worse than I and that has given me strength to make a recovery...

Dear Brian, in 1998 the love of my life committed suicide. I was devasted for a good, long five years. I believe the loss of your wife Debbie is so painful to you that you just don't know if you can endure life without her in it.
My addiction worsened and I wandered aimlessly for several years not knowing what to do with my life. Then one day I realized the white knight I had always been waiting for was really me. That's when I started to make real changes and my life became more enjoyable.

I've shared with everyone here how I stopped doing drugs and drinking and now honestly, everyday feels wonderful to be alive.
I know you have heard this before, but I really believe it when I say to you that 'time heals all wounds.'
Please hang in there buddy. It will get better.

Hi Brian

In November last year a very good friend of mine who had had some very dark moments must have finally felt too overwhelmed - he commited suicide and left us all devastated. I am not trying to lay any kind of guilt trip on you, noone has the right to do that and it is not at all helpful. However, what his family members did say was that the one tiny comfort they got from something so awful was that they could see from how everyone handled it that he had really been loved and respected by so many people - more than they and he ever knew.

I suppose what I'm trying to say in a very clumsy way is that there will be people who care deeply for you, wthether they are unable to show it or your mind won't allow you to recognise it right now is a different matter of course, but please believe it. Lean on them and let them help you. My friends parents have said that they just wish that he had known how much everyone loved him - it may have helped.

Apologies if I have expressed myself badly in this post. Take care and get well at any pace you can.

Al.

Nobody likes a tattle tale :p It could have been worse, anyway. They could have gone home with a complimentary computer or cash register. My old boss at the Vets I worked at once went home with a complimentary Puppy. I don't know if it's better or worse that the owner of the litter didn't even notice :s  I never liked the man, anyway. He had a poor track record in animal welfare, and non of the Nurses or his fellow Vets (he was the Big Cheese, as it were) liked him either. He once made me clean out his car even though it wasn't in my job description. He'd pissed me off that morning anyway for keeping alive an animal that was clearly suffering greatly in order to take money from the owners for "treatments", so I poured Cat food into his radiator..... Vandalism? Maybe. Satisfying? Most definitely.

I gave up on therapist's & therapy a long time ago. In my experience many psychologists ended up being some of the most neurotic and F' up people I ever encountered. I decided western Freudian psychology was not for me. For some, it does wonders and is very helpful & in addition the industry is going through some growing pains within the confines of insurance benefits. Many of the wonderful therapists and psychologists no longer want to hassle with major insurance companies and end up only catering to those who can afford their full rate. The system is broken.

Is it me or is everyone going through a hard time at the moment?

Gah. Even when I stay over at my friend's home I have severe insomnia. It's really not fair, because I'm quite knackered now and could use a nap. I "got up" a half hour ago and am already exhausted. I really ought to see a Doctor about this because sleeping tablets might help. I really don't like chemical medication, though. :( But I tried meditation, scented candles and all manner of lotions and potions from the natural health store.

For the first time in nearly 4 years, it actually seems like my life is on an extremely positive path. So it's not all bad news for everyone.

I don't know anyone using pure Freudian theory type therapy. Most funding sources will only authorize short term therapy services (less than one year) and if one was using Freudian based theory only they wouldn't get very far.

As a fully licensed therapist working for a non profit mental health agency, very few of my clients have private insurance. The majority of my clients are either state funded, have Medicaid, or pay on a sliding scale. I do see people through their EAP programs, too. I am certainly not alone in my profession. The biggest problem I run into with private insurance is that many of these folks can't afford their co-pay. But we work with it best we can.

You're right, so many therapists have personality issues of their own. Most of us in this profession come from some sort of dysfunction and have a desire to help others. The problems come when a therapist is working through their own issues via clients. Not good. Sorry you had a bad experience.

No one I know is in this field for the money. I made double my current salary as a bartender. :)

When I was your age everyone I knew was able to go to sleep around midnight or earlier. Not me! I had so much energy. I always stayed up til around 7am. I tried real hard to fall asleep before the sun came up because I was such a vampire. I loved the nighttime in those days.
I think it might be an age thing. Younger people in good shape have boundless amounts of energy.

It's just you. My life is absolutely terrific right now. But I don't mean to rub it in your face. As I explained to Bee in the above post I think your issues might be a youth thing. Teenagers are going through hormonal changes and it probably affects your mood.

It could be an age thing, but then again since I was in Primary School I can remember being an absolute Vampire. I would wake up at two am absolutely spry and full of energy, get myself ready in my uniform and sit and read books, convinced that it was nearly time to be up for school anyway. I suppose it doesn't help now that I have as much responsibility with Uni, Work etc now. As well as worrying about where I'm going to live next year.
