Haha. I did so badly in it. I was so nervous I couldn't read my notes or remember what I wanted to say. I was shaking badly. I had to leave the room two minutes in to cry in the corridoor. I'm so embarassed. My tutor agreed to me doing it on a much smaller level in her office though with my friends as an audience so that was nice of her. I know crowds so scare me, but I've never had a panic attack during a seminar before.

Awww, I'm doing AS Physics at the moment and we had to all do a presentation on anything Physics-related for the class of like... the eight of us. I guess I'm "friends" with all of them but I had to go first cause my name was first on the register... I stumbled on pretty much every sentence and had to take ten-second pauses to remember what I was gonna say... and at the end no one had a clue what it was I'd tried to explain :o If I was in your position, God help me!

I remember how brutal my A levels were, so I don't envy you one bit. The Tutors and, heck, even the students, were just as malicious and grasping as they are in College and University. You ought to be proud of yourself that you at least made it to the end, honey. I probably wouldn't have done. Especially when it comes to the Sciences and Maths. Just not my subjects unless the Sciences involved blowing things up :p Did you ever have to use that Crocodile Clips Chemistry program in the computer lab for a class? I probably spent most of my time mixing chemicals on it just to cause explosions lol. Never learned a thing from it, but I had me some fun. :p

Briefly, I'll try! Edit: Oh, sure. I did try, though.
Good news at the cardiologist for my Mom today, her (cholesterol) blockage on the left side of her throat (corroded artery) has not significantly increased in 12 months since she was last tested, so no throat surgery or stent is needed for the left side. That is excellent news! Today was the doctor giving us results of an ultrasound she had 10 days ago that was painless for her. She had the actual surgery on the right side of her throat 12 years ago, which left a huge scar that took 10 years to fade, but it's unnoticeable now, mostly. And the 12 year old surgery still has absolutely NO blockage, so that's amazing.
Thursday, she has a 'hidascan' of her lower stomach area- which I'm scared will be painful for her, it's 90 minutes long with an IV in. I'll stay with her, I always do at appointments because she sees poorly and her hearing comes and goes. I sit there and take notes in my old small reporter notebooks, the doctors and technicians are used to me and seem to like me. This hidascan on Thursday follows a separate ultrasound than that of her neck, as well as a recent CAT scan of her stomach area. This more involved hida-scan is to determine if gall-bladder removal is necessary, and if she is a candidate for it, being weak and too thin. If it is permanent liver disease, ( the liver problem was a side effect of a med- Lipitor- she was on for years before we found out she shouldn't have been on it) that will somehow have to be addressed. Or, it could be tumors. Pending results of the hidascan, I have to ask the cardiologist if anastesia is possible should surgery be required. My gut tells me she won't be able to have a surgery, but we need to find out. I asked her if she wants me to cancel or postpone the HidaScan, but she is up for it and wants it done. I'd never have it done for myself! If you're gonna stick an IV in me for 90 minutes, there'd better be morphine in it! -Joking. Helps me cope. Never have tried morphine, though I hear it's groovy- someday, soon!
But for today, it was all good news! After the cardiologist, we went down to a river briefly, I saw about 6 huge shiny red canoes filled with maybe 8 guys in each one rowing, I've never seen this before except in movies. It was kind of beautiful, and they were gone in a flash, they were rowing so fast. Mom could barely make it out with her legal blindness, but I described it all to her. She loves for me to drive her down to the water; me, not so much. But, it was especially nice today after the good doctor's appt.
Then, we went to Target briefly for kitchen stuff and she didn't need either her walker or white cain- it's always one or the other, she can't do both at the same time, and I doubt that I could, either!! She had the big red Target shopping cart for support, so she felt and seemed like any shopper, happy with her new sink bottom mats, whatever the hell they are, Rubbermaid with the hole in the middle for the drain or drain-stopper. Whatever.
I drove her home, fixed dinner for my parents, then came to my house and got on The Ledge. So, a good day. Not as brief as I wanted.
I'm thankful for the good days.

How many posts does it take to be an "addicted" ledgie? As far as I'm concerned, I'm a FM and SN addict but The Ledge has helped me with my overall FM addiction (you think it's not a bad thing? Well how many hours do you spend watching FM and SN videos on youtube or browsing the Ledge? WHILE YOU ARE AT WORK?).

The students and teachers are just fine for me, the problem was that I was originally only taking Maths, Physics, and Music, but my mum and granddad wouldn't sign my options sheet unless I took four... so I'm taking Chemistry too :distress: I love Music and Maths is alright but sometimes I get worried about the sciences. Never used that Crocodile Clips program as far as I know, but I hardly know any terms for what we do in English :o

Hehe, it's probably after 2 or 300. It probably won't take me that much longer to become an addicted ledgie, I'm addicted to this darn thing as it is, without it telling me I am. :p

Exactly! I have gone from waking up in the morning and having to have my Facebook time, to waking up in the morning and heading straight here while I eat breakfast. Facebook is a second priority now to me, if at all. And then I get to school around 1, and am on the Ledge for probably 10 minutes. Then back on it when I get home, then at night. I think it's safe to say that we're all sick. There should be a place where we can all talk about this obsession and help each other. Oh wait..

Okay guys, today I got something in the mail that truly made my week. Since you don't know, I sponsor a child from the Children International website.

His name is Oscar Uriel Flores Tejeda, and he lives in Mexico. He is Spanish so they translated it in English for me, but I got the original letter he hand wrote too. He is 9.

He told me his favorite sport is basketball and when he grows up he wants to be a lawyer! That is too sweet. His favorite color is red and blue and his favorite animal is a bear. d'awhhh.

Here's a recent picture of him with a picture of a pig he drew and colored for me. :)

Thanks! I committed to this right after my sister Jenn died 2 years ago in December. She was taking an early childhood education program at the local college and she had a real soft spot for Children. I had always thought about doing it and then after she passed, at the funeral guests could make a donation to any childrens charity in honor of her or whatever. So I decided that was the time to commit to a Children International sponsor. It is very rewarding.

And thanks HomerMcvie!

Yeah, it's Georgie :) I'm in a crummy mood tonight after I argued with my mum and walked Max in just jeans and a t-shirt. It's like 41f outside and I didn't wear shoes because I'd stormed out with the intention of not coming back. I spent the weekend visiting with my college roommate in Indiana. Today, the two of us drove down to our school, Indiana University, and spent 6 hours reliving our days there. We walked around our old dorms, got to see some of our classrooms, the main drag with the bars and restaurants, places where we worked. We just took it all in.

It was my first time back there since I graduated in 1997. I couldn't believe the rush of nostalgia that washed over us and we journeyed back in time to how we spent the first four years of our adult lives. It was so surreal to see the same buildings, some completely untouched from the day that we were last there and then other buidlings had a complete face lift.

Two things I took away today was how much more commercialized the town was and how absent today's techology was a mere 13 years ago. Cell phones were for doctors and lawyers back then and we all had dial-up and computer labs. Now we saw kids replacing congregating and hanging out with texting and laptop surfing. Nowadays we have problems unplugging for even an hour.

To all of you guys that are currently in college or are going to be attending soon, just promise yourselves that you'll make the most of your experience. My friend and I , while don't have many regrets, realize how there were clubs and groups and classes we didn't expose ourselves to. Just make the most of the small glimpse of time you really get to find yourself at school.

Anyway, it was an amazing trip back in time today. JTIS....

Even cooler, assuming that she means the Bloomington campus(the main IU campus), is that that's my town, and my alma mater.

Amlyn, the town has really changed in the past 10 years. All of those high rise apartments downtown, have really changed our skyline. And they're the reason for the dorms changing, too. I NEVER realized(being poor back then, and commuting, until the start of my junior year) that there were than many people who could afford $1500-2000 apartments! But there's apparently an infinite supply. So that's why the dorms are changing...no one wants to live there anymore, so they're making them more upscale, to have more appeal.

And it is funny about the cell phones and wifi. My 75yo aunt, who actually is very cool and hip, and I, are in complete agreement, that the world we live in now, is a completely different world, than that of ONLY 15 years ago. Technology has completely changed our world, in too many ways to mention.

Glad to hear it! Are you going home for T-giving break? THat was always so exciting for me, especially freshman year because you got to see everyone back home and it was just a true homecoming!

Keep us updated. I know i don't post much but i always read what you guys are up to.

You bet I meant Bloomington. Yeah, i was amazed at the price of things. I looked up tuition and room and board and about fell off the floor 3x what i paid 13-17 years ago. Im so happy i got to return. If you told me 2 year ago I'd be back, I would have never believed it.

As great as my mini vacay has been here in Indiana, I"ve anxious to get home. I"ve been at the Indy airport delayed for 2.5 hours. Great new airport BTW, except after 7pm there's no food! OMG...finally boarding!!!

Though it was just a dusting, we had our first snowfall this morning in Western Massachusetts. I still walked 5 miles in the wind and the rain and the water today. It's my exercise routine. I got fat in all type of weather and I will get thin the same way.
What was the weather like for you Caitlin?

I love Bloomington. How much is tuition now? I still have friends in school, but I've just never asked. I graduated a couple of years before you.
As far as all of the high rent apartments, from what I've been told....is that we now have a lot more rich, east coast kids, than we used to have. And Daddy doesn't blink at 2K/month rent(hell, that's $600 more than my mortgage, which is a 10 year mortgage!).
But some things never change....Nicks, The Trojan Horse, The Bluebird(did you make it there?).

I've only picked up friends at the new airport, and not seen the inside(since I'm terrified of flying!). Hope you have a safe flight!

I am home! Once we took off the flight was uneventful and about an hour and a half. I live about 25 mins north of the airport so all things considered, it was less than three hours once i sat in my seat till now.

We got there around 9am and went to see our old dorms, walked around the Union, Ballantine (EXACTLY the same). We ate at Dagwoods, walked down Kirkwood and we didn't go into any of the bars, but i took some pics of Nick's and Kilroy's. It was completely memory lane. We took a ride out to where the mall is. Wow..that is all built up now. It was just crazy. But i'm soo happy i finally made it back there. I"ve been longing to do it for years and I went with my best friend from school who i'm back in touch with after losing touch with her for 8 years.

When i went to IU I'm guessing that my tuition was somewhere between 8 and 9k and room and board was somehwere around 4k. Instate tuition now was close 1.5 times that and they estimated out of state at close to 30k. Blew my mind to see that. There's no way I would have ever been able to attend IU today if I lived out of state.

Anyway, today was a long day, but minus the delayed flight, it was such a trip. My friend kept saying everything was trippy.....i kept laughing a little cause every time she said it I had Stevie's voice in my head saying trippy.

I'm heading to bed momentarily. I"m exhausted.

Amlyn, your post was gorgeous. Thank you :xoxo:

I made a bad decision of a ranking of 6 on my roommate and my bad decision scale last night. For perspective, a 10 is ripping off your limbs just to rip them off. 9 is ripping off your limbs for fun.

Glad you had a safe flight.

Nick's looks the same, but they expanded into the building next door, even though you really can't tell, from the outside. Kilroys was closed all summer this year, as they just finished adding the second story to it, a couple of months ago.
Was your walk yesterday???? Because I was downtown, doing errands, and it was sooooo freaking nice outside, that I walked from downtown, down Kirkwood, past Dagwood's, and back downtown, around 2PM, so in theory, we might have passed each other!:lol:

Tuition....wow, I forgot you were out of state. When I was there, they had just gone to a flat rate, for up to 17(I think?) hours. In state was ONLY like $1700/semester. I only lived in a dorm for one semester, and I don't remember how much room and board was. But I could never have afforded to go to an out of state school. I really lucked out, in that I grew up 25 minutes from IU(in Nashville, IN). Textbooks are insane now, though. My best friend is in the Kelley School of Business, and his textbooks were $1100 this semester! Insanity!

It is trippy, going back in time. If you ever make it back here, please get in touch, and we can do dinner or something!

I live 4 miles west of town. I've got 5 acres in the (sort of) country. Best of both worlds....5 minutes to everything, yet peace and quiet, here. If you ever attended the county fair here, I'm about a mile west of the fairgrounds.

Just wonder: Do you guys tip when you go to pick up take-out? There's an Italian place I like a lot and I usually do tip since I get food there once a week, and they seem to appreciate it.
Also need to ask- do you guys tend to tip FedEx or UPS delivery drivers? I don't want to do that, but I have a somewhat large FedEx shipment coming tomorrow, (24 pounds or so) and if a tip is expected, I don't want to be cheap.
I suspect the FedEx drivers are paid well enough and get health insurance and other benefits, while the small restaurant workers probably are paid poorly with little or no benefits.

I'm a serial tipper. Whenever it seems socially acceptible/expected to tip, I'll do so. And usually excessively hehe. Although having said that, courier deliveries get nothing. They're paid very well and for the most part I find their manners to be entirely lacking, which is a great deterrent for me to dip into my piggy bank (:p).

Interesting that you seem to feel the same way as I do about parcel deliveries. I think the answer has to be no.

I always tip when it comes to my food. I tip 20% or more for dine in service, but usually only add $1 or so for take out. It's just a way to say thank you and since I spent my entire life in that industry, I know it's appreciated!

Okay, rant time!

Some of you may remember me complaining about problems with this house I'm living in and its psycho landlord. Well, it got worse, and now I'm looking at being homeless here in a couple of days.

Times is tough right now, and the kids & I are just barely keeping our heads above water financially, and last month, there was a bad medical emergency that ate all my money, and this led to me not quite having enough when rent came due. I asked the landlord to please cut me some slack for a bit until I could scrape it together, and I was apologetic, and I hated doing it because I hate being so broke, but I had no other option. He agreed this was fine, but apparently changed his mind, because he came back with a "10 days to get out" notice to tape to my door.

Now, I know I owe this man his money. I would never dispute that. And I also know that this is not how a formal eviction is done, though I've never actually been evicted before, but I am desperate to get out of here before those 10 days are up, because I am afraid of what he might do to me/my kids/my stuff if we're not gone. I know he won't be able to have the cops drag me out or whatever without a court order and the right paperwork, but since his son has already shown he has absolutely no problem with barging into my house uninvited and without knocking, I am afraid.

And I don't want a formal eviction on my credit report, because I've never had one before and I don't want to start now, should I try to fight this and it go in his favor anyway.

But yeah - trying to find a new place to live in 10 days when you barely have any money is f*cking impossible. I've spent the last week trying frantically to find somewhere for us to go, and it's just not happening - either my credit isn't good enough, or they won't take my dog, or the place is in a scary neighborhood (I mean, I'm poor right now, yes, but I can't drag my kids into East Saint Louis, you know? You'd think that poor people deserve the chance to live somewhere that doesn't feature gunshots as constant background noise, but apparently not).

I found a place today that looks like they'll approve me, and it's one I can afford (and less expensive than here, so it's better all around), and it's actually nice and in a decent (but not awesome) area, and the schools aren't scary, and I can have my dog...but the guy said it will take about a week for all the credit checks/background checks, inspection for the occupancy permit, etc, etc, to go through.

And I don't have another week. I can go crash on my parents' floor, but I can't bring all of my stuff over there - there's no room. I could probably get around that by renting a storage locker for my furniture and such, but if I do THAT, then I won't have enough for the apartment when I *can* move in.

But if I just try to stick it out for that week and stay here because the notice on my door isn't a proper legal one, I'm afraid of what the asshat will do - have his son come physically drag me out anyway? Change the locks while I'm not home so I lose all my stuff? And I can't take my dog with me everywhere I go, so if he did that while Chloe's in here, what would happen to her? And if any of that DOES happen, what recourse do I honestly have at this moment? I could fight it and eventually perhaps get a judgment in my favor, but in the meantime, what would we do without any of our stuff?

Sorry for the ranting, but I am at a loss, and needed to vent. I kind of hate everything right now and I am kind of scared to death.

Does anyone here have a Mac iBook? It just occured to me again how much better it would be if the power cord was on the left side instead of the right. I'm forever having to reposition myself so not to yank the cord. Otherwise, not many complaints. But it seems to be a real flaw in the design, to me.
Mine is 3 years old, maybe the newer ones have the power cord on the left, I think it was a common comment that it would be better.
Edit: Sorry to read about your problems, Zombie, I didn't see it when I typed this message, which seems so trite after you poured your heart out.

Okay, rant time!

Here in Indiana, anyway, the landlord(I am one) has to file eviction, though small claims court.
How long it takes, really depends upon how backed up the system is. I've gotten a court date in a couple of weeks, and I've had it take as long as a month. That said, I've won every eviction, and even outsmarted a lawyer that one of them had(EVERY correspondence MUST be delivered by certified mail, or there's no proof that they received anything- the lawyer missed that, and I won the point). I've had judges give the tenant as few as 3 days to vacate, and never had them give more than 10.

Zombie- no matter what, he can't hold your stuff, even if you owe rent. TOTALLY against the law. I feel so badly for you- do you have friends to keep your stuff until it's all sorted out?

Yeah, I spoke with a lawyer (who was nice and gave me some advice over the phone without wanting money), and he said something similar, but the landlord guy is NUTS, so even if he can't legally hold it, I don't know what he'd pull in the meantime, you know?

I am trying to make arrangements for things to go places where they'll be safe, but the larger pieces of furniture are a tough one. Smaller stuff, like the kids' toys and books and clothes and such are easy, and more important in the long run, but I like my furniture and will be sad if I lose any of it - back when my job hadn't gone to hell, I was able to finally buy NEW furniture that was just mine, that I picked out, instead of random hand-me-downs from other folks. So...yeah. Ugh.

-do you have a lease?
-have you read this (http://ago.mo.gov/publications/landlordtenant.pdf)?

- I have a lease, but it's a month-to-month.

- I did read that, and the City Hall ladies gave me a little book. It's not so much the legal aspect that's worrying me, it's the landlord himself. Like, I took down the first paper he posted so I could read it, and then he had his son come back and DUCT TAPE a new one up, telling me that if I took THAT one down, it was vandalism, and it also included fun, handwritten passive-aggressive threats in the margins, telling me not to underestimate him, etc. He's creepy.

- I did not think of that, re: dog thing, but that is a good idea. Thank you.

- The lawyer I mentioned above did say that about the 30 days' notice, and that he'd have to have an actual court-ordered eviction notice to get me out of here, delivered by the sheriff folks, so I'm not so worried about cops showing up. He told me to keep my occupancy permit on me at all times, just in case, though. I AM worried about his son showing up, though, or them doing something else weird. I have cancelled checks & receipts.

- I dunno about advocacy group, but I will find out.

Thank you, seriously.

Yeah, he has to do that here, too, apparently. I have never had to deal with this before. The notice he put up is not an official one - the lawyer and other folks I have spoken to say he's just trying to scare me out so he doesn't have to pay whatever fees they charge to do the small claims thing.

Zombie, for a quick solution that may help, may I suggest speaking of all this to the grandparents of the children you mention, if not their fathers?
I don't mean to get personal, so please don't answer specifically. I just think a woman with 2 children should not be in this all alone. Seek the kinfolk, they are under some obligation, that's how families are. God Bless You, this has to be a major heartache and in ten days? Impossible with children, schools, and a pet for you to handle this all alone.
I'd think either sets of grandparents would realize it would be in the best interests of the children for them not to change schools mid-term or sooner because of a financial hardship. If you don't want to stay where you live now with the bad blood between you and the landlord and his son, maybe the kids' grandparents would help out enough for you to live in the same school district, at least. I believe you're talking about public schools, or it wouldn't matter where you lived, they wouldn't have to change schools.
Maybe you could just appeal for family help so the children can stay in the schools they're in now. And with their help, perhaps you could still stay in the nicer, safer area that you're in now.
This is not a question that requires you to answer publically, I just thought it might give you an idea to call someone local and/or related to you and the children who could do you some real good right now with the cash situation. It could be a timely pre-holiday gift for whomever concerned to make a good gift to you and the children -- and the dog:)
Dang, I hate moving, I recall you giving me many good tips back in August about packin' up. Shackin up IS all I wanna do for sure, for a long time now without havin to pack it up, again.

What I would try to do, if I were you, would be to get it in notarized writing, that he's not going to pursue you for any back rents. Because, legally, you are liable for the balance of the lease term, or until it's rented, whichever comes first. So, you might be able to save having a judgment against you, affecting your credit score, or garnishment of your wages.

Because that's what I try to do. I don't WANT to go to court, believe me. I'm neither a morning person, or a dress up person, nor an argumentative person...so all three, rub me the wrong way. I find court to be extremely stressful, especially if they have a pro bono lawyer. I usually do what he did, in a much nicer way. "I don't want to go to court. I don't want to garnish your wages. I don't even want any hard feelings. Can you be out in two weeks? Because if you will, I'll just take the financial hit, and we'll be done with it". This works for me, about 2 out of 3 times, that I try it.

You guys apparently had a verbal contract where he agreed you could be late on your rent this month and he is in breach of that contract. If he does sue you for eviction, the burden of proof lies on him, not you. Therefore, pleading your case to the judge that he did in fact agree to extend your rent payment may help you prevail. Also, him and his son should not be able to legally enter the apartment without your approval. However, I know you want to get out ASAP. So I think seeing if there is maybe someone who can help you out would be a great idea. Or possibly taking out a payday loan. I know they charge a lot in interest, but most don't check your credit. Last year I was able to take out a $600 loan and pay it back $110 a month for six months. And I'd rather pay 10% interest in a six month period than put myself, my family, or my things at risk. I wish I was working right now because I'd definitely wire you some money if I had it :(

Hi, hon - thank you for the suggestions, but my family situation is a little...different. That's a good way to put it, anyway. The family I have are my foster parents (I went into care a little before I turned 13, and we've been close ever since - they might as well be my "real" parents) and they are helping all they can, but they are not in a financial position to do much that way. But my (biological, not foster) mom passed away at the beginning of the year, and my stepdad is a good guy and would help if I asked, I think, but I can't do that - the medical bills and associated things with my mom have put him so far into debt, I just can't bring myself to ask when I don't know for sure how long it will take me to pay him back. My kiddos' dad passed away 6 years ago this past September, and his mother is not a good person, so she's not in our lives at all. So while I'm not alone alone, I'm still kinda alone. Haha.

Mostly, we do just fine - sometimes even better than fine! Which is good. But this year has been really bad. When I put everything that's happened this year together, I'd say it's probably the worst year of my life. And I've had some doozies, believe you me.

Well, to be honest, you might be doing the best thing, by getting out. What I would try to do, if I were you, would be to get it in notarized writing, that he's not going to pursue you for any back rents. Because, legally, you are liable for the balance of the lease term, or until it's rented, whichever comes first. Oh no - I'm not planning on not paying him or anything. I tried making a deal with him, but he was not in the mood, and this is the result.

I just realized this whole thing makes me sound like some kind of irresponsible idiot, and I promise I am not. This year has just been so bad. It's been one thing after another - surprise move to St. Louis & then my mom's funeral (she died literally the night we arrived here in the city), which wiped out my savings, then I lost my biggest contracts at work, which killed most of my income, and I am struggling to pick up more work - no one is hiring. It's just...desolate out there, job-wise. Then surprise medical problems, and surprise emergency dental surgery, and I don't have insurance, 'cos I can't afford it, and and and...I could go on, but you get the drift.

It is a mess.

But you sound like a good landlord - mine is not. For example, there are so many things wrong with this house that he's refused to fix (I have yet to get a working stove, and the bedroom ceiling pours water like crazy every time it rains, for starters), his son has barged into my house without knocking or being invited & lurks around outside sometimes like a creepy thing, he actively avoids my phone calls (if I call from my phone, no answer - borrow someone else's to call two minutes later, he picks up no problem). None of this excuses my not being able to make rent this time, of course, but he is not...reasonable. Not someone I am able to get a notarized statement from, like.

Ahhh, you are a sweetie, but it is good (sort of?) that you are not working, because you should not be wiring money to strangers on the Intarnets. :xoxo: They might use it for crack or donuts or whatever it is the kids are into these days.

I am SO leery of the payday loan places, but if they let you spread it out over several months, that might be doable. Thank you for the suggestion - I will look into it, see what the places around here offer.

I know they are not legally allowed to enter like that, but they've done it before - these people are bad people, and while I would love to wave my arms around and pitch a fit at them right now, I need to get away from them first before I'd feel...safe...doing that. If that makes sense.

We did have a verbal agreement, though, you are right. I am not sure how I go about backing that up, but we did have one.

Trust me, verbal means NOTHING, without witness, and probably not, even then. NOTHING. Your lease, is a binding, legal contract(based upon anything in it, being LEGAL, in your state. Anything that doesn't apply, legally, will be thrown out, by the judge).

Oh god, I would avoid those payday loan places, like the black plague! Just sayin'..... don't do it.

It's my turn to reach out and give you a virtual hug. I have been reading your posts and everyone's response however sometimes I don't read good so I might repeat something someone else said.

Okay first off, I SWEAR there is some law about landlords evicting people who have kids. Something about not throwing you out on your ass when you got mouths to feed. Second, don't be afraid of public assistance. I had to march my ass down to the food stamp/welfare office before...my kids have been on Medicaid and Alkids at different times. As much as I wanted to hold onto my pride and figure it out myself I decided I better do something. It's getting cold outside and Christmas is coming up...you gotta do what you gotta do. I know we live in different states but I'll tell you what I know about the social services system here if you just want a general idea of how it all works. I'm not sure if you've already considered this route or have been down it before.

In the meantime, I have plenty of extra room for a mommy and a couple more midgets. If you're up for a longggg drive.

Keep us posted

Annie :( *moar virtual hugs*

Is there anything the police, or even your neighbors can do, to 'keep an eye' on your stuff? I suppose that's more a neighbor thing. Are there any US laws that say the police can provide protection or, at least, supply a direct number to the closest officer? I know that in the UK you can get an incident number which puts you straight through to someone at the closest station and an officer can be there in minutes.

If you could get said number, are any of your neighbors to whom you could give it to if anything did happen while you were out?

I hope things start looking up :xoxo:

Zom-beh, I feel awful for you. I am just amazed that despite all of the crap going on in your real-life, you still manage to come here to your Ledge-life to spread your humor and good spirits. Geez! I thought I was having a bad year!

I know this may be the last thing you'd want, but I think it would be great if we could pass around a virtual collection plate on your behalf via PayPal. And it's not like it's a handout; I am sure you would pay everyone back as soon as you are able. And if you are unable to pay everyone back, that's fine too; consider it an early Christmas gift. If you are only 10 days behind on your rent, I suspect we are not talking about a tremendous amount of money, so I am sure we can make up the shortfall here.

Dear Zombie:

This is a terrible situation. It is time to stand up for your rights.

Allow me a moment, when I was in my 20s, I came upon two similar situations with psychotic landlords. In both situations, I won.

1) take photographs of anything psycho places on your door.
2) change your locks - you have a right to do this based on previous illegal entrance.
3) call the police
4) find paper as large as your door and front window, duct tape the crap out of the one on the inside of your window. In big bold red lettering, describe that you are currently being harrassed by the landlord of the complex and that in no circumstance does anyone have legal right to enter these premises. take photographs of your art project.
5) contact a landlord/tenant advocate.
6) file a small claims case for harrassment and dilapidated living conditions.
7) if anyone comes to your door, landlord or son, have recorder placed on floor at door to record all conversation; a great tool for capturing verbals.

please describe your complex; are there a small amount of units, is it a rental house, or a large apartment complex?

I'm a student of Fine Art and for my project this term I decided to continue with my ongoing theme of Idolatry, with Stevie Nicks as my icon of choice. I'm painting a mural that will probably take all year to do because my next project is the flipside of her story, which is Lindsey Buckingham (:P). I'm also constructing a Diptych of her in classical poses. One side is her simply placed on a throne (a bit obvious really) and the other is herself and Lindsey as Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden (The apple is an allegory for their embittered breakup).

First - thank you to everyone that's left good wishes and virtual hugs. I really appreciate it.

And Jannie - if I had some gold, I would totally unload it, but the only "real" jewelry I own is a thin ring that was my mom's & her pearls, which she left me when she died. I don't think either would bring me enough to make giving them up worth it, if that makes sense - the ring is gold, but it's very thin and kinda banged up due to being old, and the small sapphire is chipped. I wear it because it was hers, but it's not much to look at, lol.

And Dani, I don't pray, but I have some warm fuzzies that are yours if you want 'em. Suffering is suffering, it's not a matter of degrees. I learned that from this one psycho British Zen monk I used to date!

Oh you. And the rest of you that offered to help - oh (collective) you, too.

Thank you so much for the thought and your kindness. It may or may not have made me cry (but if it did - and I'm not sayin' it did, mind you, but if it did - it was only a little, because I am wearing my Extra Strength Big Girl Pants today, so no worries), but I am not sure I can let you guys do something like that. I really have no idea when I could pay any of you back, and I just wouldn't feel right about it. It seems...wrong... for me to do that, I guess.

I still stick around here even when sh*t sucks because it's a good refuge - I suspect many of you do the same. You guys are good people, and if only Stevie & the rest of that lot knew what awesome people they attract as dedicated fans, they might be moved to release an album more often or tour Europe more often or something crazy like that.

I have had some new developments today, though - one good and one not good. The apartment complex that looks like they will approve me, if they do, said today that it won't take a whole week for me to be able to move in like the guy yesterday said, which is GREAT. But how I thought earlier that I could crash on my parents' floor in the interim...my foster parents have the same landlord I do (he seemed fine at the time, which is why I took this house), and he informed them yesterday that if they let me stay with them, then he will report them to the city for violating their occupancy permit and kick THEM out, too. So that is...y'know...NOT GREAT. I can't put them in that situation, and I don't think I've ever disliked someone more than I dislike this man at this moment.

And so, in conclusion, you are all wonderful and should each have a new puppy or some cookies, and this guy is a douchecanoe of epic proportions.

It is YOU, Annie, that needs to start with the reporting ASAP. fight back against this controlfreakslumlordpsychwarddouchenozzle for what he is doing to you and your family, what he has likely done to everyone before you and will do to everyone that will come after you...unless he is stopped.

31 years ago tonight, I saw Fleetwood Mac in concert for the first time. November 10, 1979 in New Haven,Connecticut. This picture was taken that night(not by me) while Stevie sang Sara.

Annie,
Where I come from, we have a saying: AHEM...
"What do we do to people who hurt our frineds? .... We KILL them!"

But, since murder is illegal, and I hate to be in the pen at Christmas, and all... you should reconsider, and let us help you.

I could care less if you ever pay a dime back! Besides, I would consider it a gift to you anyway!

This guy makes me want to listen to the Smile At You angry demo, and break something!! ARGHH!!!

Can someone please tell me what I did wrong? I am completely lost and this is ridiculous.

There's a video 'Sweet Girl' on YouTube, and I think I made a comment like, "Sweet Girl is a really great new song for The Dance. I liked it better than Chris' Temporary One, but Bleed To Love Her was the best.

Is there anything wrong with this post? It got deleted and the girl told me to avoid such familiarity in the future and that my comment was at ease and not respectful to my favorite band. Also in her country it is not accepted short hand references to unknown older women.

:( I didn't mean to offend anyone

I know! Everyone calls Christine 'Chris', right? Even her band members from what I remember. And it's not like I said Chris's song SUCKED, because I do like that song, but no apparantly I'm not supposed to have a 'favorite' song.

She never said what country she was from, but I couldn't imagine surviving there for very long either...they would exile us or starve us to death

Soooo...the Westboro Baptist Church people are gonna be in my neck of the woods next week:

"Woodbridge High School in Woodbridge, VA November 15, 2010 7:00 AM - 7:30 AM
WBC to picket the students, parents and teachers at Woodbridge High School who live in rebellion against their creator every minute. Parents and teachers have taught the students from every day from birth, with everything that they do and say, that God is a liar and that His commandments are to be treated as suggestions, if that! That did that because they hate these children and are trying to justify their own sins by teaching the children to sin more and worse than they. How selfish are you?! Your duty is this: And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart. And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. (Dt. 6:6-7.) You have failed in your duty and God will require you to give an accounting for it. There is hope, however, because God has sent His servants to your town today to tell you the truth -- to warn you to flee the wrath and destruction that is coming on this nation! The children are entitled to hear the truth one time in their lives. God does NOT love everyone and it is NOT OKAY to be gay. If you give a care for your never dying soul, you will come out from among this people and OBEY TODAY! Amen!"

It's all my friends have been talking about. Many of them are going to go protest the protesting because of various reasons: e.g. according to the westboro folks god hates them for being bisexual/gay/friend, dating outside their race, and being anyone who is not them. I want to go, but I don't have a ride :(

Update:

They are also picketing the Coast Guard Recruitment Office in Woodbridge right after they are done with the high school...

God does NOT love everyone and it is NOT OKAY to be gay. If you give a care for your never dying soul, you will come out from among this people and OBEY TODAY! Amen!"[/SIZE]

Those people are insane. I'm all for freedom of religion, but, honestly, if it was any of God's business what goes in and out of my ass, that's not a religion I care to know about. They should go foist their beliefs on someone who gives a crap.

My first concert ever was this summer and it was Heart. It was amazing!!! I can totally understand your freaking out.
I can't believe the ticket prices are $160-200 though.
I guess because where I saw them it was at a musicfest thing near me which is small so the tickets I got were $37 and the most expensive were like $60 something.

I love Nancy Wison :D, but of course I love Ann too.

If you go you have to tell me about it!!!

Yeah, I had no idea they were doing a Canada 2011 tour until today. tickets went on sale November 5th, so basically I think it's sold out ..and they only ones I can find are 160-200 bucks. It's for front row tickets (from what I can see anyway), I think the normal priced ones are sold out, don't ask how much they were. Where I'm from we usually only get one 'huge' name every year or so. This year was ACDC, couple years ago was Rolling Stones. We don't get many big bands so people would pay that much for a ticket. Me, namely. Just wish I didn't have to! I love Heart!

IF IF IF Chris were to come back to FM, I would probably pay $150, but not a penny more. Ticket prices have become out of hand, and as long as people are willing to pay those prices, they stay there, or go up further. I'm out of that game, even though I can afford it.

So... I submitted a song to the Dave Stewart songwriter contest on twitter. I've never written a song before but the possibility of an instant recording was too much to pass up. I'm sure I didn't win but I had a lot of fun giving it a whirl:

First Kiss
by John Demetry

[Verse 1]
Do you remember your first kiss?
Do you remember his name?
The movement of his lips
Or the moment he came?

[B]Too quick to miss
I haven't let go
Caught up in time's bliss
Too soon to know

[Chorus 1]
First kiss First kiss
Don't you forget this
First kiss First kiss
Don't you forget this

[Verse 2]
I don't remember my first kiss
I can't remember the name
Was it different than this
Or did it feel the same?

[B]Too many to miss
I can't let it go
Caught up in time's bliss
Too soon to know

[Chorus 1 (repeat)]
First kiss First kiss
Don't you forget this
First kiss First kiss
Don't you forget this

[Chorus 2 (switch up)]
First kiss First kiss
Did you forget this?
First kiss First kiss
Did you forget this?

Instance #7542 of Miss T helping me through a rough patch, and probably Instance #971 of "Upside Down" in particular being helpful.

Anyhoodle - so yesterday was my "Get Out or Else" date according to the latest note tacked on the door by the landlord. The new apartment I am hoping to get is on its last leg of verification before it gets to the approval folks, so hopefully that will happen soon, but in the meantime, I decided I'm am going to stand up to the guy & we're not going anywhere without another proper place to live without a court order.

This decision was made in large part due to the support and suggestions from you guys. So here is what I did:

1.) Spoke to the lawyer I spoke to before to make sure I had the Missouri Landlord/Tenant statute about eviction proceedings correct (it's 441.223).

2.) Trotted my ass down to the police station to talk to an officer about my concerns that he or his son might pull some sh*t and what I should do if sh*t should be pulled.

This was an interesting conversation - I already knew that the City Hall people are well aware of my landlord, because when I went in to get my occupancy permit, I'd mentioned some of the shenanigans he was pulling about getting the inspection done, and the lady said, "Oh, your landlord is Landlord's Name? Yeah, he does stuff like that."

But lo and behold, the cops are already aware of him, too. I explained the situation to the officer and told him I know evictions are a civil issue and that the Sheriff's office is the one that actually handles dragging people out, and that there's no court order, so I don't have to leave, but my landlord is crazy, so I wanted to make sure that if something were to happen, I could call the cops and they would come help. He looked up my address and then came back and said, "Who's your landlord again?" and I said his name, and the cop said, "Ah yes...he's a little...different." I asked if that was a polite way of saying "crazy," and the cop laughed and nodded, and then proceeded to give me a card with the number for dispatch, and then made a note to do extra drive-bys of the house for duration for me, and also made a note for the dispatchers so they'd already have a heads up if I called.

Another interesting thing to come out of that conversation was when the cop looked at my address, he said, "Hey, we were just at the house next door this morning. Same landlord." I don't think it's anything due to the landlord, and the cop wouldn't tell me, but still interesting. It's really likely to do with drugs, because they just moved in but already have a serious case of Crackhead Blinds Syndrome in all of the windows and people coming & going at all hours, with tons of different cars, and a lot of cabs from different areas of the County & City. Also Halloween weekend, they had a huge loud party, and I woke up to a floor lamp and toilet seat in the yard. Not the lid, but the actual seat part. Good times, good times.

3.) Sent the kids over to my parents for a bit - the note said to be out by 4:45 PM, so I was expecting douchecanoe to show up at 4:45 on the nose to flip a grip, but...nope. Didn't show up. Hasn't shown up today yet, either. I am sure he'll be by, at some point, though, so I have all the doors double-locked and my "Do you have a court order? No? Well, here's a copy of the Missouri eviction laws so you can look over how it's done. I'll be sending your money registered mail and we'll be out of here pretty soon, too, but if you want us out of here before then, you're going to need to go through the proper channels. Thanks!" speech all prepared.

I am still incredibly uncomfortable with staying here and I want to be out as soon as possible, because even if the cops will be helpful, I'd rather not be in that position to begin with. And I am really reluctant to actually leave the house and go anywhere in case I come back to something awful. But this will do for now, and I am actively trying to relax and keep from having panic time.

Thanks for the support, everyone. And I mean that more than I can express properly. I will keep you updated.

I must admit that, after a long, hot summer of extreme austerity (secondary to unemployment!), I now feel this extremely pent up need to spend money now that I'm working again. I feel so disgusted with myself. My summer of austerity was actually very zen for me- not spending money forced me to take stock of needs vs. wants. I quickly began to embrace the art of non-consumption- of living simply, living day-to-day. I learned all about $2 falafel in the East Village (yum!). I learned the art of haggling over the price of produce in Chinatown. I stopped drinking (and paying for) coffee. I embraced the challenge of relying on my own two feet to get around vs. paying for transportation. In sum, I learned to enjoy the simple things... and there are many, many simple, wonderful things that we overlook in our ordinary daily lives. The whole time I did not step foot inside of any retail stores or visit any online shops. It was all about living for the sake of living and savoring every moment of the hot but fleeting NY summer.

Today is my first payday in 5 months. And it is a good one. Ugh. Must. resist. temptation. :distress:

I have to do this right now. I bought myself a tablet PC at the weekend to stave off buying a new laptop for when I go to University and I used the money I had saved up to start learning to drive. Now I have to put more money out of my wages away each month until I've put back what I spent and what I'm supposed to be saving as well. I have to kick my McDonalds habit (I'm a student, it's acceptable) and I'll be buying my last record for a few months on Thursday.

I feel like I'm going into prison  It'll be good for me though, I think, I've been going crazy lately and not saving so the last few Christmas presents I need to buy have become a bit of a weight on my shoulders. I'm not getting into a situation like this again.

Well, buying things like a new PC (if you really need one) is one thing. But filling your life with lots of unnecessary clutter is something else entirely. But then again, you are young only once and if you are going to be carefree and irresponsible, now is the time to get it out of your system. I know I certainly did! My weakness as a young person was to collect records, especially all of the "import" 12" singles from the UK. I still have most of them! I don't play them any more, but I still savor the memory of all of the joy they brought me. As a compulsive completist, I got such a rush when I finally found the missing pieces for my collection. I spent entire weekends taking the train down to Washington, DC to scour the bins at Tower Records and the indie stores in Georgetown. Ah... the memories.

My two most hated words of all time. I really need to do my Christmas shopping. However, being a student means limited budget... I have no idea what to buy for my family.

That, and there's bloody awful Christmas music in all the shops now. Starbucks got Christmathised overnight.

Haha it depends on what kind of Stat class you are talking about. I took an elementary stat class at my junior college and it was a breeze! I actually found it rather intriguing. However, right now I am taking "Mathematical Statistics" which is a whole conundrum of proofs and crazy ass estimations of the mean using strictly math, very few stories involved. That is what I hate most about this class. We talk about distributions and means and variances and sums, but there never is a background story at all! In elementary stat, we learned how to calculate stuff and then calculated it based on data, but in this class we focus only on the math aspect of it. And if this is the class that you like, then by all means, you can do my work for the rest of the semester!!!

In elementary stat, we learned how to calculate stuff and then calculated it based on data, but in this class we focus only on the math aspect of it. And if this is the class that you like, then by all means, you can do my work for the rest of the semester!!!

Stats isn't so bad for me at the moment but that sounds awful!

Today I grew a spine and fixed things in my life that I thought were beyond repair. I helped myself and it feels good

I could have written this exact post. Statistics and Research Methods (which I had to take TWICE- once in undergrad and once in graduate school) almost killed me.

You were a psych major, too, right?(or did I dream that?)
Sound like the exact same class. At IU, it's # was K300. I still shudder, thinking back to that class. The prof said, on the first day, "I realize you're all a bunch of psych students, and not math majors, so I'm grading on a big curve". Had he not, probably 80% of us would have flunked!

He actually LOST my last assignment, and I didn't get a passing grade(passing grade being C-, for my major, and he gave me a D+). I told him that I'd turned it in. Well, he was a pig, and had about five, three foot high piles, of papers in the corner of his office. I sat there, for about 3-4 hours, going through the piles of papers, finally producing the UNGRADED project, that I'd turned in. He was embarrassed, and had my grade changed to the C-! Thank gawd, because I'd have probably committed suicide, instead of having to retake that f*cking class!!!!!

Although I was never really unhappy, Aug/Sept of 2009, I decided that I was making major changes in my life. And I have. I have reinvented myself, in several ways. And ALTHOUGH I've not achieved everything I set my sights on(YET!), that doesn't really matter. Because I have achieved happiness with myself.
I'm still searching for that damned thing called love, but even if I never find that, I've found that true happiness lies within. I have fantastic friends, who love and support me. And that makes for a fantastic life. :woohoo:

I truly believe that we do make our own happiness.

Yep I feel the same! I had to make major changes because I had so many problems that I'd never bothered to face that I'd just kept it inside and dumbed myself down mentally to try and stop caring. They built up until they pushed me down to rock bottom and I didn't know how to deal with them, 'cause I'd just been using a good friend as a crutch through it all. I lost that friend but at the very end they convinced me to stand on my own two legs, fix my problems and make my own happiness. It was the best advice I've ever had.

You know, for me, the main thing was.....I've always been a loner, of sorts. I mean, I always had friends....but I enjoyed my solitude, a little too much. Plus, a bad relationship, 10 years previous, left me completely heartbroken, and I'd really just given up on love. Not on life, but on love.

So, I woke up last Aug, on vacation, and it was like a cloud had been lifted. I was over being heartbroken, and I was over being alone. It was quite the epiphany!!! So it really all started with me wanting to get into shape. I lost 45 lbs, started dating, and just had a new outlook on life. Funny....before....I had no interest in Facebook, or texting, of much of anything social(my social life consisted of hanging out at a neighborhood redneck bar....there were a lot of good friends there, but it wasn't much of a life). Now, I'm a FB addict, and have friends out the ying yang, and party invitations constantly.
I did actually go on a vacation, by myself, 3 weeks ago, and I'm going again, next week, but I'm okay with that. Texting and FB on my phone, make it almost like being home with friends.;)

But, for the most part, I've murdered the loner in me.:blob2::blob2::blob2:

I realized, after being in the front row of an arena concert for a band that I love, that once you do that, it's kind of impossible to go back to NOT being in the pit. Which is going to be come an expensive habit, but damn, there's nothing like being right in the front of something THAT huge.
