Sorry to hear that, Skip. Anniversary's are tough. :sorry:
My grandmother passed from multiple myeloma, but that was a long time ago, in 1960.
Thank you.

Today marks the 9th year of the loss of my step dad Jim. He was 73 .He had multiple myeloma which our local meteorologist the late Dr Mel from WTNH here in New Haven had since 1996 .
My step dad had it for a short time.About a year in a half earlier he had to go in for a stomach surgery and never recovered from it.At that time he was diagnosed with multiple myeloma .
RIP.Jim.
I'm sorry to hear that, Skip. Hope you're doing okay.

Sorry for your loss, Skip. Hope you're doing alright.
So, I have pretty much concluded that my roommates (who are also my closest friends at college) are rude, selfish, inconsiderate people who don't care about me whatsoever. I have plenty of examples but I'll spare you. In short, I've recently changed my major which has made it possible for me to now get this degree @ the school my stepdad works at, which means I could live at home and be with my family. The only real thing keeping me @ the place I am now would be my social ties - my "friends" - but honestly they make me more upset than they do make me happy. So I am transferring in the fall, I have decided. It's probably best to tell my roommates now that I won't be renewing the lease because they will need to start looking for someone to take it over in the winter/early spring, but I'm just trying to decide if I should let them know how I really feel when I tell them, or just make up an excuse about my parents or something and say I have to go back home. Part of me really wants to just let it all out because I've been bottling up everything they've done to me and all my feelings for the past year and a half, but then another part of me just doesn't think it's worth it, and doesn't want to "burn my bridges" persay..
Hi!
All the best to you, Skip. In october were 11 years since my dear grandfather passed away. I was too young, but since that I think he's watching me, from somewhere.
And WildHearted, I lived (or I'm still living, I don't know...) something similar. My old partners at the university were my best friends, but something happened and suddenly they gave me the back, and I don't know why.
I was following them for the last two years, calling them, trying to get a clue, but not being annoying, and they never answered, until today. I suppose they knew I wanted to talk face to face with them, because maybe I'm not someone who talks a lot, but I'm a listener and a observer, and some things talked for themselves. Now I know that one day I'll talk with them, and I'll resolve the questions, but not today, and not tomorrow...
Regards!
Mark.

Hi! Wow, I never heard about that! I searched and I knew what it was. I didn't do it, but I'm writing a novel.
Yes, I started in September, here at home, but then a friend asked me to stay at his home while he and his wife travelled, so I continued there. And I was really so inspired. In a normal Word, I've written over 73 pages, and 22 chapters, starting the 23 right now. Only 22 in 73 pages?? Yes! Obviously you're thinking in a smaller size, so 3 or 4 pages per chapter are not bad! I suppose...
Is not easy anyway. Sometimes inspiration goes with the wind. When I was at my friend's home, I continued this, and I started to write some songs. I had all the time in the world, you know. Inspirations? Well, my signature below speaks for itself, but I also included my whole life, some old songs and obviously, some FM songs (not to copy them, of course). Now I'm at home again, and write is difficult. I have music but no lyrics, and my novel progresses so slowly...
Regards!!

Not bad for Stevie's friend .I still blame the producers for not letting them rehearse the awards show that year.
I always liked her tunes.
The CMA Awards were great last night.
I got the complete show on my hard drive if wanted.

Willie Nelson got the lifetime achievement award.
Heres the winners.
Entertainer: Blake Shelton
Male: Blake Shelton
Female: Miranda Lambert
Duo: Thompson Square
Group: Little Big Town
New Artist: Hunter Hayes
Event: Tim McGraw & Kenny Chesney
Album: Eric Church-Chief
Single: "Pontoon"-Little Big Town
Song: "Over You"-Miranda Lambert & Blake Shelton
Video: "Red Solo Cup"-Toby Keith

I think Stevie should have no problem getting into country music today since the new country music sounds like rock now.

Guess who peed next to Mr. Billy Burnette today?
THIS GUY!
So I'm in Nashville for a week. I always go one day, to eat at this place in west Nashville, called The Loveless Cafe(it's been featured on Diners, Drive ins, and Dives). Well, they have a big barn out back, and Billy is playing there tonight. Now, I wasn't eating there today, because of Billy's show....it was just the day I'd planned on eating there. As I walk in the place, I see him sitting there eating....."hmmm, how to I get a picture?". Well, I get seated, and then order. Well, I always wash my hands before I eat(germaphobe), so I thought, I'll wash my hands, then try to sneak a pic of Billy, eating. Well I decide to pee, and who walks in, and pees right beside me? BB! Well, I chickened out of saying anything, but who else here has peed with a member of FM?
Uh, huh, just what I thought!:D:D:D THIS GUY! lol
I did try to get a picture of him eating, after I left the restroom, but he was eating over in this corner, and it would have been really obvious/awkward, if I'd try to snap it, so I didn't.

Because I try to never bother people. Especially when they're eating(I personally HATE it, when someone comes over while I'm eating, and interrupts, or even worse, forces me to shake hands, mid meal)! So I didn't want to bother him. I'm now sorry I didn't talk to him in the bathroom...

THANK YOU. Yes, a meal is to be enjoyed, not interrupted! A quick "hi" is acceptable, but not a conversation, nor a handshake. Especially a conversation long enough, that my food is getting cold. I don't think some people understand that it's bad manners, doing the above.

Very well possible, though everybody else has said they don't care what they work. So if enough work on Thanksgiving night, I would hope I'd be clear for Friday. Althought they are paying time and a half for that night, so it wouldn't be all that bad.

This is kinda strange: My boyfriend is a firefighter and whenever his pager gets close to my computer it makes a white noise, or just goes off. Does anyone know why this is? My computer is the only one that sets it off. I hope I'm not getting cancer, but I mean unless I grow a fifth limb from radiation or something I'm not gonna worry about it. Just wish I knew what was going on. lol

It sounds like Something has poor shielding for interference .More likely the pager is a receiver means that the computer is causing it to go off.It could be the monitor or the computer box{tower}. If its a Imac .I'm shocked. I know if I listen to the news on my AM radio in the same room as this computer is in .I will get noise galore. The pager could be lacking some shielding inside around the receiver circuit in the pager.
Shielding is a piece of metal or foil which is grounded to the negative of the power source.
Most electronic device has to go through UL Lab testing for hazards like TV,computers, microwave ovens and anything that runs on house current.
Also The FCC will have electronic products tested for interference to radio waves.
In Canada The CSA which is the equiv to the US UL labs.

Hi All.I'm in need for a new camcorder.I have a Sony 2005 dcr- hc32 DV camcorder which has been a lemon with its viewfinder flexible wire breaking.I'm had replaced the flexwire between the camcorder and the the color foldout viewfinder about 3 times and now its acting up again.
I would love to get a pro model in the $1500 to 2500 plus price range but I have to settle for a cheaper one for $300 price range.
I already looked at the Canon Vixia hf r300 which looks crisp but the battery only runs about 25 minutes and Canon wants about $100 bucks for the hi power battery.
I want to check out the Panasonic,JVC and Samsung models in the same price range.
I really dont want another Sony probably because of that problem but that little DV camera did put out good picture also great on batteries.
Maybe they ironed out they flexwire problems on their newer models.
Ok what do you guys use or recommend to get.

So, I just walked into my 12 year old sister's room to ask her something and she literally LEAPT across the room to shut her computer. Naturally, I stopped her and looked to see what she was trying to hide...
She was reading NC-17 Fanfiction about Harry Potter that was literally just smut. She's 12, and she still plays with dolls, for crying outloud. But I know I was ~curious at that age and everything but... she's my little sister....
and I should probably mention that she is behind a couple of years emotionally/maturity wise.. she's got some slight learning disabilities but nothing severe.. she was born with Apert Syndrome and so she has a hard time making real friends sadly which is why I think she kind of stays in her little childish world, because she can make believe.)
I got mad at her and told her she shouldn't read that because she's not 17 and it's not appropriate for her. And I threatened to tell my mom, who would surely totally freak and take her computer away and stuff.
But I mean, I don't want to get her in trouble. I'm just worried of the stuff she'll find on the internet, knowing what a weird place it can be. I thought all she did was play dress-up games... so now I'm conflicted... should I tell my mom?
I don't know what to do. There's a war in my mind right now. I don't want to be a tattle tale but..

Is your mom receptive to something like, "I think it's time we talk to her about internet safety / boys / life / etc?" That way you won't have to say what it was, just that you're concerned.
Or, maybe there are some more "appropriate" safe places on the web that you could steer her towards?

Tell your mom. She's a child and your mom needs to know. I know Harry Potter fan fiction is probably not a big deal, but I would want to know if my child were reading that type of thing at that age. Hopefully your mom won't freak out but will try to talk to your sister. Good luck.

If your mom is going to react that way, I'd say not to tell your mom. Sure, your mom probably should know what your sister is up to, but the fact is that the internet exists and your sister will explore her curiosities sooner or later. Telling your mom would just make it awkward for your sister and upset your mom. Your sister will lose trust in you and your mom will lose trust in your sister all over something that is pretty inevitable. I think the best thing to do is to talk to your sister about it and tell her about your concerns with some of the stuff on the internet. Your sister will find it a whole lot easier to relate with you than with your mom and knowing she can trust you will open up the door for her to come to you with questions in the future. I just feel that if your mom is going to freak out and take her computer away it will only result in shame and embarrassment.

Maybe you should set up the parental controls on her computer. That way you could keep her from going to those sites but not have to tell your mother.

My grandmother is in very poor health and most likely will pass before Christmas. She gotten worse of the past six months, being transferred to hospice care at the nursing home.
Her Power of Attorney woman (can't stand her but anyway) told me and my mom last night that there is only $2500 of life insurance money available! She has basically said it's up to us.
I don't know what to do about all this. We have a very small family just me, my mom, her brother/wife and their son/daughter, none of us have the money to cover the rest needed. Funerals are around $5000 - cheaper if you cremate, which my mom has said no chance in hell that will happen.

I think you're underestimating the cost of funerals. In January, it will be 10 years since my Mom passed. We didn't "overdo" anything, and I think it was $6800. I remember the $6800 figure, because Mom only had 5K in insurance, and I remember paying the balance. Again, that's 10 years ago. I do know that cremation is cheaper, but I'm not sure by how much. I know that they have "rental caskets", if one is desired for a service, pre cremation.
Sorry you're going through this, and hopefully she won't suffer.

Thanks HomerMcvie,
She passed away yesterday around 12:30 pm. The funeral home seems willing to work with the $2500, but they need an additional $1,000 upfront for the opening and closing of the grave. We aren't doing cremation - that has been decided. No visitation or funeral just a small graveside service. My mom and I, along with my pastor, her brother/wife and the POA are going in tomorrow at the funeral home to discuss the arrangements/finances.
I'm considering taking a loan from my 401K to cover the $1,000. No penalities, 4.25% interest, as long as I pay it back by the end of 2013. Seems better than depleting my modest savings or using my 17% credit card!

I'm surprised that you can get it taken care of for $3500. I often wonder if funerals "cost as much as the client can afford"?
Yeah, the loan from the 401K sounds like a much better option than the credit card.

Just got back from the funeral arrangements and other related mess with my family and others...
The first thing they wanted was the $1,000 for the opening/closing of the grave. Took us a few hours to haggle out that money. My church gave $200, my mom and I $300, and my uncle/aunt wrote a check for the other $500 claiming that was there rent money and they might be evicted. The POA just sat there smiling like this ain't any of her concern. My pastor helped alot with the negotiating and keeping everything somewhat calm.
My aunt and the POA did my grandmother's hair. Strange to say, but she looks so much better now than the day she died!
Small graveside tomorrow at 11am. That's all she'll have, which we are all fine with. She's not cremated, which was the most important thing.
A simple funeral for a simple woman. :)

I have one branch of my family, who are pretty much hilljacks. Know what they do? All the men gather at the cemetery, and they dig the grave by hand, taking turns in the hole. They're all poor, and it's how they help the family. (Sorry, just a strange side note. I've never seen anyone else ever do that.) Even stranger, if they're digging it for a man who drank, they all drink beer while they're digging, and throw their empty cans in the bottom of the grave, as some sort of "last drink with him".
I'm not surprised that they didn't want to budge on the money. I guess it's just like any other business. It's just strange that they're dealing with people during grievous times, who are possibly not making the wisest decisions.
Again, I'm sorry that you lost her. May she rest in peace.

I can't even remember the name of the last place I found, but I KNOW it's where I got the Trojan that destroyed this machine. To all my Australian Ledgies, I want you to know that I am aware of the torment you are going through right now with the excessive heat and fires. Severe heat waves seem to be the norm now as the current parts of the world that are in winter suffered a lot of the same throughout our sunny season. I remember last year you folks had excessive rainfall and flooding. I hope you stay strong and endure. remember, you are strong and faithful. Positive vibes I send your way.
Love ya, Viv

Unpopular opinion: I came to the concusion that I actually like "Silver Girl." Some of the lyrics are campy/trite but overlooking that, it's a nice song.
I agree! I always hear the song start and I think, this music is solid...lyrics, not so much.

I've watched quite a few movies these days, and especially teen/coming of age classics. Believe it or not i'd never watched 'The Breakfast Club'. It's quite entertaining. I've seen "Fast times at Ridgemont high", "Say anything...", "Heathers", and "Dazed and Confused" so far. If you have any suggestions of movies in that category please tell me i don't have anything left to watch!
Therefore yesterday to stay in the topic i went to see "The perks of being a wallflower". Has anybody seen it or read the book?
I really, really liked the movie. The soundtrack especially. There is this tunnel scene in the movie, which is arguably the most important one, where the kids listen to "Heroes" by Bowie. I love the song, but then i read somewhere that in the book, the song is actually "Landslide". Damn! Would have loved the soundtrack even more.

Never saw the Wallflower movie...but sounds good.
I'm sure you have seen The Goonies
Other 80's suggestions:
Pretty in Pink (great soundtrack)
Sixteen Candles
Back to the Future
hmm...I'm drawing a blank...but if you like these type of movies (I love them) chick flicks of the 90's:
How to Make an American Quilt (w/ Winona Ryder)
Fried Green Tomatoes
Riding in Cars with Boys (Drew Barrymore, Penny Marshall directed)
A League of Their Own (another P. Marshall film)

All my life I have dreamed of leaving a winter climate and going somewhere warm. This is the first time I am making the dream happen. Tomorrow I leave for sunny Phoenix, Arizona to enjoy temps in the 70's while the people in my hometown suffer in the single digits -30's. Green grass, palm trees, leaves on the trees, flowers and blue sky everyday.

Well i haven't seen the Goonies...:sorry:. My 80's culture knowledge is limited, but i'm working on it! "Back to the future" is just the best though.
I'll try "Sixteen Candles" but it seems pretty cheesy (but so is "fast times at Ridgemont high").
Wow the cast of "A league of their own" is impressive. I adore Winona Ryder so "..American Quilt" should also work.
And "Fried Green Tomatoes" is one of my favorite movies. Aaah you have great taste.
Seriously try "The Perks of being a wallflower", you might really like it.

Our normal January temperatures are in the mid 60s, but it has been a very cold winter here so far. The other day it didn't even hit 40 degrees; that's unheard of for Austin. I'm dreaming of moving to the tropics- I detest anything below 70 degrees.

I went on my first date ever last night.
Not gonna lie, I'm kind of disappointed. Maybe I was expecting too much idk.
I just met this guy like 2 weeks ago and he seemed really cool. He plays drums in the campus band I'm singing/playing guitar in. Kind of cute and was really friendly to me and made a lot of effort to like talk to me, hang out with me around campus some, and get my number and stuff. So when he asked me a few days ago if I wanted to go on a double-date with him and his roommate [who I know from class]/roommate's gf I said sure.
He offered to come pick me up but I live like 20 minutes away so I drove myself to meet all of them. Then we went to dinner, and the food was good and everything and we had good conversations going throughout, but I felt like the other guy was talking to me more than the one who asked me out was. He was the one constantly asking if I liked the food, etc. The guy who asked me talked but it was never really directed toward me or anything. And then when it came time to pay, the waitress asked how we were going to split the checks and he looked at me and was like, "It's up to you." As if I was going to demand that he pay for me or something. So of course I said it was fine and I would pay for myself.. but idk, maybe I'm old fashioned. I just feel like if someone asks ME on a date and I spend $10 in gas to go meet them somewhere then they could at least pay for my meal? And the way he put me on the spot wasn't cool. I would have looked like a total jerk if I didn't pay for myself but at the same time the way he asked made it seem like he was up for paying for both of us...
Then we all went back to the 2 guys house [they are roommates] and we talked for a while, watched part of a movie, and browsed youtube. I was exhausted the whole time and kind of wishing I had gone back home after dinner but I didn't want to be rude.
It wasn't that I didn't have a good time, I just felt like it was a less-fun, more awkward, more tired version of what I would do with my regular friends.

I really don't think so.
Last week in class the other guy asked if I had a boyfriend, then said he wanted to "set me up" with someone - the kid who asked me out (he didn't know we already knew each other).. When the kid did ask me out, he asked if I wanted to go on a "double date," and throughout the night the other guy kept referring to it as me & the kids "first date." Plus he's been walking me to class and stuff and texting me all time time, making sure I got home alright etc.
The problem is that he definitely acted like totally friendship-y etc... which I mean, I'm glad he wasn't putting a whole bunch of moves on me or anything (ideally) but he could have like looked at my face while we were talking and stuff...
Then again, I've never been on a date, so I don't really know. Like I said, maybe I was expecting too much.

A year and a half ago (i think?), i opened up for the very first time, here, about my parents' alcoholism. I received a lot of support from people who had already been through that, and who made me understand that this was an issue for a lot of families. Then, i started to feel that it was something i had to live with (not exactly normality though), and something that couldn't be the reason for my unhappiness.
I started to open up to my friends about this, and i found people who would genuinely listen to me. I even talked to my parents about this, though i have to admit their state is pretty much the same now. But i don't feel guilty anymore. I just know i have to live my own life.
I'm rambling, sorry, the only real thing i want to say is thank you to all the strangers on the internet who talked to me for that brief moment, and who probably don't even remember it. It was, like, a short conversation. But you have no idea how much of an impact this conversation had on my life. It made me grow.
It might be weird to talk about this right now but i wondered, tonight, why i was always returning to The Ledge when really i have twitter and facebook now, and i don't need it. The answer is that it feels like returning home (very Ulysse-esque), where i can talk about my issues and improve my English. The Ledge is a part of a whole period of my life that i still cherish, but that i'm happy i've passed.
Anyway, thank you guys, i love you !:thumbsup:

It is very good that you don't feel guilty. In that sort of situation, there is always the tendency to think "Well, if only I'd been (better, perfect, smarter, fill in any adjective) then my parents/siblings/relatives/etc. would not be alcoholics."
No matter what, it is their own issue and one they can only deal with when they are ready to. To steal a Stevie line, "You have your own life and you are stronger than you know!"

Sooo...this morning some asshole broke into my aunt's house and shot her 3 times. Luckily the bullets missed ever vital organ, so she's ok.
Plus she's a paranoid schizophrenic, so instead of feeling distraught that this happened, she is so pissed (which is funny).
I'm happy she's ok, but I wonder if this is gonna make her even more...crazy (? if that's the word).
Anyway, this all happened during the snow storm that started last night, so he was the only person who stepped foot outside. She was able to crawl out of bed and call the police. They tracked his footprints back to an abandoned home where they found him hiding in a furnace.

Winter never exists in SoCal. Oh, we had a little snap of cold weather for about 4 days where it never got above 55, but it's usually in the upper 60's during the coldest days (it was 85 last Friday). It's basically spring & summer all year 'round. But have to admit, even for this native SoCal'er, the weather here gets boring. After having a taste of what "seasons" really are the past few years, I like the drastic change of seasons.

Ever since my band went to a 3 piece(on about 80% of the gigs), a couple of years ago, it was the most freeing thing that has ever happened to me! My playing has improved 50%. I love just having a rhythm section behind me. SO freeing!
And I actually HATE it when I have to play with the additional guitarist now. It's annoying, and distracting!

Do you play country? I'm obsessed with classic country...and in actually becoming a walking encyclopedia of it. I'm up to around 160 songs, that I can pull out of my arse at any minute(FM should learn how to do it). In fact, if it's a 2 night gig, with say 45 songs a night, I will only repeat maybe 15 of the most popular ones, on the 2nd night.
And so even has my obsession with the clothing has taken over...
I still like rock, and FM will always be my favorite(well, with Chris). My friends mock my musical preference constantly, to which I say, "Yeah, well f*ck you....know what? I play the music I LOVE, every single weekend, and I'm fairly well paid for doing so. Are YOU doing what you love?" Douches...my friends can be douches!:p

I cant sing or pick guitars and play keys.I wish I can.Stevie and Lindsey has no time to teach me some singing lessons and guitar lessons .LOL.....
Yes I do love classic country in which I started listening to it in the 1970's as I mentioned it here before.
Yes Me too.I remember when I was in school .my friends always LOL at me and said .Why do you like that wimpy music for.I said the music makes more sense then the noise you all listening too They dig Aerosmith.Kiss,Led Zep and Alice Cooper.
Yes I do like some of those classic bands tunes today.
The problem with FM is as we know. They got to mix up their freaking setlist on every other night. They know their true fans follow them.

My ENTIRE life is based on my cousin(who couldn't get along with her stepfather) moving in with us, when I was 14-ish, with her damned Rumours. Changed my life forever, the obsession that it gave me for music(and FM, obviously, even though I've expanded my repertoire). I taught myself guitar and keys, based on this obsession. It's so hard, telling my country music friends, that my musical journey began with my FM obsession.
Funniest thing is that my family played bluegrass and country, when I was young, and I couldn't have cared less. Bunch of hillbillies, as far as I was concerned(family and the music). I was too good for that.
And in high school, I remember all my friends listening to hard(er) stuff, like AC/DC. And I actually really liked it, at the time. And it's still okay...
FM is only a machine now. The DINOSAURS that Lindsey never wanted them to become....well, they have become. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$, to finance their lifestyles. And I'm not faulting them for that. But anyone who thinks it's more than that, is delusional, and obviously the fan that I was, in 8th grade! :xoxo:

Is NBC Planning Jay Leno's Retirement?
By Sadie Gennis | TV Guide – 3 hours ago.. .
While NBC denies the reports, sources told The Hollywood Reporter that the network is preparing to oust Tonight Show's Jay Leno from his longtime roost in favor of Jimmy Fallon.
According to the two high-level sources, NBC wants to promote Fallon to the coveted 11:35 timeslot to better compete with Jimmy Kimmel. While Leno regularly beats the competition overall, it's always hit-or-miss with Kimmel when it comes to the 18-49 demo. "Kimmel has done extremely well," a source said. "Jay wins overall, but on any given night, it's neck-and-neck in 18-49. I understand where they might have fear and also feel that they own the solution [in Fallon.]"
NBC allegedly has plans to announce in May that the 2013-14 season will be Leno's last. When questioned about the reports, a representative for the comedian, who's signed on through 2014, said, "We do not speculate on rumor."
Would you miss Leno? What do you think about Fallon in the earlier timeslot?
...................
So, here I am. After 9 days, I returned from a very different journey, that never enjoyed at all.
People were strange. "Long" faces, bad behaviours, and a very bad attention at shoppings! People looked tired or something similar, I don't know well...
Good things? Well, family, of course, scenery, places, and a girl who really looked like Nina Dobrev in the return trip! Well, I like Victoria Justice, but she looks like Nina, so I was so happy with that girl just a pair of seats behind me! :blob2:
So, here I am, ready for news and for share comments and info with you!

If Leno is bringing in the bread. Why is there this BS going on to get rid of him.It sounds like a forced retirement to me.
I love Jay Leno .He's funny.
Jay is 62 . Johnny Carson retired at 66 on the show on his own I believe.
I think CBS forced Bob Barker to retire from The Price is Right show.Bob was 83 and still doing a awesome job hosting the show.I think he could host TPIR today at 89 years old.I like Drew and I'm glad that he was picked to carry the show on.
I cant stand age discrimination .It's BS...
Jimmy Fallon will be an excellent replacement for Jay if this happens.I like Jimmy's show and he's funny too.
Jimmy' is 38.
David Letterman is 65 and so far no news on him getting canned at CBS.
If Dave retires they probably have Craig Ferguson to take the show over.
Craig is 50 .He probably do good as a replacement for Dave.

It's not that I don't like the name "MacDougall", it's just really not relevant to my life. I was adopted at birth by David MacDougall and Jeanne Phillips MacDougall. Their divorce was finalized two weeks before my third birthday. He moved to Detroit and has had very little to do with me since. No little league, no Cub Scout meetings, no parent-teacher meetings. Nope, only two marching band competitions and my high school graduation. My last proper visit was in 1996. Since then, I've only been around anybody with the last name "MacDougall" for a total of 12 days if I'm being liberal, 10 days if I just include the current living MacDougalls, and 4 days with MacDougalls of my generation (my two half-siblings and my cousin); the last time I was around any MacDougall was in 2004. (Cue up Everclear.)
Last year, I reunited with my birth family. My birth parents got married three weeks before my adopted parents got divorced, had three more children, and are still very happily married. They've come down for visits, I've gone up for visits. Hell, my parents, sisters, and brothers-in-law went to a GbV show in Chicago! My brother has since become a father, and made me my nephew's godfather. I've spent a total of 55 days in one year with them so far. I am one of them. I thought my name should reflect that.

Well that's a very good reason, and they look really nice! How hard was it to get it done? I would think it would be very hard!
Even though I was adopted, too, and met all of my birth family(and we're reasonably close), I'm still far closer to my adopted family. But I know the issues with identifying with them, and feeling a part of them, etc...

We men usually do. However, I asked a few married women, and it's not anywhere near as hard as I thought. There's a lot of paperwork and whatnot with people outside of the court, but it was as simple as filing a few forms.

Every adoptee's story is different. I'm very close to my amom and her family, which is why her maiden last name will be my middle name. I tell people to never use my story as the gold standard for adoption. My story is the Walt Disney fairy tale of adoption, and believe me, I know it!

It wasn't exactly an easy decision, per se. All of my degrees, professional license, accomplishments, and even album credits have been as "MacDougall". However, not including my amom (whose maiden name will now be part of my name, because she and her family never made me feel "adopted"), I'm tired of being odd man out. With my adad and his kids, I was the "adopted" child. I was odd man out with most of my step sisters, too (there's one who I also consider to be my sister, and she's happy about the change, too).
This year was the first time I almost didn't feel that way at a family Christmas, and the only reason I did was because of my last name. That's something I have control over. I now have something that is real and is mine. So any inconvenience I might have will be relatively minor.

So does that mean you will apply for new copies of diplomas and stuff, or just have to explain that you changed your name?
Wanna know something ugly(to me) that happened, the day of my Mom's funeral, 10 years ago(Jan 14)? I mean, I was adopted AT BIRTH!, and my aunt says to me, AT the funeral, "just so you know, you'll still be welcome at our cookouts and stuff?"
ARE YOU F*CKING KIDDING ME????(I didn't say that, of course, I'm not wired for angry confrontations...). I had spent every holiday and cookout of my entire life with ALL the family, and that BITCH had the nerve to say that to me. I kept it to myself for 10 years, and a couple of months ago, while playing cards with the part of the family I'm closest to, told them what she said to me(because we were talking about Mom being gone for 10 years). They were horrified that she said it, and at first tried to make excuses for what she said. But I remember it word for word, like it was yesterday. Which told me that even though I'd been part of the family since birth, for 30+ years, she never officially considered me part of the family. After we talked for awhile(edit-to the close family-not the bitch), they understood how I felt...and I told my aunt and cousin (that I'm INSEPARABLE from-we call each other at least a couple of times a week, if not more), that I would never forget, or forgive those words, as long as I live.
Because again, it showed me that she never considered me to be "legitimate" family...adopted from day one of life still makes you a black sheep, in her eyes...but I digress...
~edit~- I do want to add, that NO ONE else in my afamily EVER made me feel like I didn't belong, never ever. Only that one C U Next Tuesday. That's why it came as such a shock!
So Steve, you're right, everyone's story is different, definitely. And I'm very happy for you, that you've found the best parts of it all, and put it together! I love both my families, but again, my afamily is MY family, warts and all! lol:D

Wow. The only ones who ever made ugly comments to me were my step-parents; and my adad once said something around the time my half-brother was born that made me feel like he didn't really consider me to be his son. Reading your story makes me realize I wish I had been closer to my extended family. Do you intend on going back to social work? How long has is been since you started with GBV?
And again, that was the ONLY negative thing ever said to me about being adopted, by my afamily. But I always suspected she was a bitch(stayed with an assh*le husband her whole life, all for the love of $$$$), and she finally showed her true colors to me...meh, whatever! lol
Since Mom's been gone, I actually have felt like I'm drifting away from some of them, now. The main exceptions would be one aunt, and her daughter, that I'm extremely close to. We get together and play euchre, at least once a week. (as everyone not from Indiana/Ohio says, "wtf is euchre!?!?)

I don't know. Maybe. I also may go back to school to change professions.
How long has is been since you started with GBV?
About three years.

Well, if it's any consolation prize, there are ton of beer jokes that can be made now. My new cheesy pick-up line for the girls at geek bars is "Hey, wanna Hopslam?" (See, now every time you see Hopslam at a bar, you're gonna think of that stupid joke.)
Stephen, I can see the family resemblance, especially between you and the baby. What will your new avatar name be?

Thanks! It was a good show, although he has been sick lately. His voice wasn't very strong, (and you could tell that he was frustrated, as he would shake his head, and occasionally "grasp" at his throat). But all in all, so happy that I got to see one of the legends!

I just had the coolest experience tonight. I was driving and I pulled up into a parking lot outside a dance studio. There were two trash cans side by side. One was a recycling bin. Sitting quietly on top of the trash can handle was an adorable little owl.I have never in my whole life seen an owl in person, let alone up close. She sat there staring into my eyes and I had one foot out of the car and I told her how beautiful she was and not to be scared. Then I got out of the car and closed the door and walked over to the recycling bin and opened it. She still didn't leave. Her body turned gently from side to side and she watched me pull out some magazines from the bin and I spoke to her some more. After I had the magazines in hand she watched me walk over to the car and toss them through the window. Then she watched me walk back to the barrel before she left me.She looked a bit startled when I was lifting the recycle bin cover up to close it and off she flew into the night. I thanked God for the wonderful opportunity He had presented me with.

We've had a cool spell the last couple of days considering it was sunny and hot the day I headed down to Miami. The news said this should be the last cold snap of the season down here and we should be having higher normal temps than this being it's almost April. I guess winter up north is enjoying it's stay. I had been to South Beach before but never walked 25 blocks like we did the other night, I didn't realize just how huge that place is, you really could live on that island and never have to leave it for anything. I passed by these two young women, both in cocktail dresses and heels sitting outside some party/hotel/ball and I hear one of them say "Oh, I like your messy bun" and I turned around and laughed and said thanks. Because it was hot that day and I was out looking all casual not really dressed all up or trying. And I've never seen so many shaved and waxed men than I have running around South Beach. Granted I'm pretty hairless too but I wear an occasional skirt.

My sis and her bf snapped a pic standing in front of the doors that night. They had posters on the door showing the cast working there and tee shirts inside. I walked up there and waited outside where they had some outdoor tables set up. She made a point to walk inside and get some gelatto. I tasted a bit, was like gelatin ice cream really and I'd never had any. Must be big in Miami down there cause it's everywhere on South beach. She also wanted a pic in front of Dash Miami.
