My grandma was just diagnosed with lung cancer. She's having surgery tomorrow but there's only a 75% chance she'll make it out since she's almost 80 years old.
This week has sucked SO much.
Dani, your fqmily and Grandmother are in my prayers at the moment.

You silly little girl, Bee. You would have thought that you would have learned your lesson. But of course not. Why do you drink when you're lonely/depressed? You know you can't handle alcohol. For once in your life take the lesson and avoid it. At least you didn't wander in the middle of the night in a strange city like last time...

Being heartbroken f ucking sucks, especially when you know you shouldn't be and when you feel like an idiot and when you kinda want to crawl in a ball and die.
Also-- my grandmother is fine. She got out of surgery a few hours ago. Turns out, she had Histoplasmosis which is a fungus growth caused by being around soil contaminated by pigeon and bat ****? The woman smoked for 60 years and somehow the giant mass in her lung was from PIGEON SH*T. She's in a lot of pain right now but she's a fighter-- put on makeup before her surgery because "being sick is no reason to look like horse sh*t". :) I love her.

Got the kids enrolled at their new school today. They start on Thursday. Yay! But - they have to wear uniforms, which I did not know, so - surprise! Time to spend more money I don't have on school uniforms.
But I appear to have a new job starting soon! Hopefully before Christmas! Fingers crossed, everyone! I don't want to jinx it and do a happy dance, so I will just do a moderately sedate Nathan Fillion groove:

I need two implants, to the tune of $6000-7000.00.
So I'm doing without(yes, they're in the back, where they can't be seen.....IF they were visible, I'd come up with the money). Both, were root canals, gone bad(the tooth broke, while he was trying to do a root canal, so all he could do, was pull it).

So that's me and the Best Boyfriend in the World at the Grinderman show in Chicago a couple of weeks ago, which ended up being one of the best nights of my life. I just found that pic on the Grinderman site last night, which made me squee.
So, why is he the Best Boyfriend in the World? Lemme tell you - as many of you know, I've been having some major financial trauma and landlord issues and madness, which is slowly starting to be resolved now, but a couple of weeks ago, was really a bad, bad mess. And as many of you may also remember, I bought tickets to see Nick Cave & Company when they went on sale several months ago, and I was so. damn. excited about that. Because I love Nick Cave, and Warren Ellis is basically my hero. I've been a huge, HUGE fan since I was about 14, and have only managed to see the Bad Seeds in concert once in all that time, and I was not able to catch Grinderman when they came 'round for their first album a couple of years ago.
But when all that other junk started happening, I knew there was no way I was going to get to go, because all of the money I had was being poured into getting the hell out of my old house and into a safe place for the kids.
Cue Best Boyfriend in the World, who somehow managed to scrape together the gas money to take me to Chicago to see Grinderman. But not only did he get the gas money, but he braved the 6-ish hour drive and the ridiculous rush hour traffic on Lake Shore to get me there early enough to be first in line, so I could then be in the front row. And he also scraped together enough cash to get me a t-shirt & a copy of the new CD at the show because I had been previously too broke to buy the album myself. So there's me & Mike in the front row, right between Nick Cave & Warren Ellis - Nick is Mr. Stripey Shirt and Warren is Mr. Spotty Shirt.
During the show, Nick came over and grabbed my hand and held it for a bit, which made me blurt out "Thank you!" at him, for some reason, to which he replied, "No, thank you, thank you," and later on, he came back to sing the "But I waaaaant you" bits from "Kitchenette (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sX6VjxL3bAk)" at me, which made me squee. I mean, I know he doesn't actually want me, but WHATEVER, I HAD A MOMENT. Nick interacts a lot with his audience, so there were other miscellaneous bits, and he also sang at Mike a few times, and used my shoulder as a support when he would step off the stage to balance and dance and sing on the security rail (seriously, one of the top fun things I've experienced at a show is now Nick Cave singing the "tippy-toe! tippy-toe!" bits in "Kitchenette" while actually doing an exaggerated cartoon-like tippy-toe walk on a one-inch wide metal railing. I've seen video of him falling off stages (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLugP9pohus) and such before, and now I know first-hand why that happens - he has no regard for personal safety in his pursuit of being awesome.)
So all of that would definitely qualify for Best Night Ever, BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE.
After the show, Best Boyfriend Ever waited patiently with me in the cold for an hour and a half out behind the club, and I actually got to MEET NICK CAVE. And before Nick came out, when it was discovered that I had forgotten my pen in the car because I am a doof, he ran all the way back to the car (a couple blocks) to get it for me.
The actual meeting was really brief, because it was so late and so cold, but I don't care. He signed something for me and I got to say hello, and that's enough for me. So I'm going to print out the picture above and frame it along with the picture Nick signed and put it on my damn wall, because...yeah. Brilliant.
JTIS.

Re: dental details, above.
Has anyone here ever had a procedure called an Apical? It is a root canal inside of a root canal, and involved the dentist going deep up in the gum and is not a common procedure, from what I was told. I needed one on a front tooth about 11 years ago, it was intense, intense...intense.
The tooth was saved, though. Call me picky, I want teeth in the front :) Thousands of dollars on that one tooth. Close to $3500, I think.
I do have a 'composite'-- fake tooth, built up with some sort of dentist magic tooth-like substance he attached to broken root canals, on a tooth in the back, actually two teeth. Much less expensive than a crown, but they do sometimes need to be replaced (every 3 years or so).
December has usually been a busy month of dentistry for me, most years, but so far, this year, I'm fine.

Dentists are one of the few things I have an intense phobia of (along with pigeons and needles) now I'm 18 I refuse to go now, I just don't like them at all.
When I was about 10, I had a spare tooth - a tooth growing in the middle of my two front teeth and it had to be removed - it was a normal tooth, but the root of it was gigantic, looked just like a giant fang. I still have it at home, along with all my other baby teeth.

Girl (boy?), go to the dentist. Otherwise you may end up 40 and in serious trouble. Dentists are actually quite friendly and if you find the right one, he or she will keep you out of pain. I can't tell you how sorry I am for not taking better care of my teeth. Part of it stems from poor dental care in childhood, part of it (periodontal disease) is genetic, and then the rest is ignoring my teeth all through my twenties and thirties.

My husband had this done on his front few teeth this past week and he looks wonderful. All this dental work has been spurred on by a client of his. He is a dentist and is working with us on getting all this work done. He can't really cut us major financial deals, but at least we know he is honest with us and cares about the outcome.
I still can't believe I need braces. I had them for FIVE YEARS as a kid, but my parents never took me to get the retainer, so it's like I never had them at all. I'm too vain to get traditional metal ones, so I think I'm going to go with ceramic. I really wanted to get Invisalign, but my dentist said he doesn't think they work as well. *SIGH* I wish I could describe what my dentist said would happen if I decided not to get braces, but it's too long and complicated. Think buck, splayed, unable to close my mouth.....I think all of the color drained from my face while he was talking to me. I need a crown (had the root canal done last year), an implant, and special periodontal cleanings every 3 months, plus 2 cavities to be filled. Yea!

and then the rest is ignoring my teeth all through my twenties and thirties.
Yep...once Mom quit paying for my dental care, I pretty much went through my 20's, with none. And, believe it or not, I've not been for the past year or so(except to have my crown reglued). Last winter was really tight, financially, and I canceled my scheduled cleaning, and have never rescheduled.
I WISH I could find a dentist who cut deals. I'd LOVE to get the two implants I need, but with a $1400 mortgage payment, by myself, I just can't cough up 6-7K, without it being a major strain....
There's always "trumpet braces". I lost my front two baby teeth, very young, after a fall. So I was without, for at least a couple of years. Well(the dentist said), from pushing my tongue through that space, for so long....by the time my adult teeth came in, I had pretty bad buck teeth. Mom couldn't afford braces, after my Dad left us, so I just did without. Funny thing? 9 years of playing trumpet, pretty much fixed them. Really. It just gradually forced them back, to where my teeth are pretty straight. Nine years of trumpet=buck to straight.

Dentists are one of the few things I have an intense phobia of (along with pigeons and needles) now I'm 18 I refuse to go now, I just don't like them at all.

Hairdressers seem to have a fetish for straightening people's hair, thus why I give my own hair a wee trim when in dire need. I have really long hair so obviously I don't resort to it often, but it saves on money and generic hairstyles.

Man, yous got balls. All I'm saying. I've thought of this, and got so close, but backed off like a chicken in the last seconds. I miss going to my stylist back in Ohio. If anything worried me more, it was finding another good stylist once I moved who would willingly spend 3 hours coloring, trimming, and then blow drying and styling my hair. I never had used a straightening iron on my hair but she did once and ever since had used one after that and it did make my hair so sleek and shiny. And I'm not one who likes straight hair usually, maybe just a bit messy. But it looked so good straight and I think she just loved styling someone with longer hair. Most stylists don't and hate you when you walk in.

just make sure that you keep your self focused on your well being,
do not think that because you have not yet found that special someone that there is a problem,
you will find the right person, at the right time,
in the mean time, make sure that you take care of yourself,
perhaps at this time you could focus on your creative writing skills,

Too funny, considering the circumstances. What would worry me about water damage is all the mold and mildew you'll have to watch out for now. Where are Red Cross and your landlord/insurance people? Might be something to check into because you should receive some help in dealing with this mess.

Maintenance came and vacuumed up the remaining water and I have fans blowing like a bitch! But I am sure the insurance peeps and management will be out tomorrow to assess the damage. Funny thing is, there is a city ordinance saying they must have a fire extinguisher in EVERY apartment. Back in November they got their fire inspection and then took my fire extinguisher. The maintenance guy came and I asked him what happened and he said the people upstairs had a small grease fire and they couldn't find their extinguisher and that is what caused the fire the get big enough to make the sprinklers in their apartment come on. I told him I didn't have a fire extinguisher either and he said, "Yeah, we had to get new ones for some apartments so we took the old ones and we just got the new ones in, but I don't have a list for the apartments that need the extinguishers so I have been waiting on the list!" So I am sure the apartments above me have much more damage than I. I wouldn't be surprised if they sued!

Water can cause havoc. Up in Ohio a few years back our (I believe it was Sears or McAlpins one) we had a huge downpour all day and finally the mall's flat roof had caved in from all the water weight and damaged the entire Dept. store inside. So yeah, it's no joke what it can do.

Okay, it is freakin' COLD out, y'all. Waiting to see if school is delayed or cancelled tomorrow. Seems like most area schools are closed already, but my kids' new school is not listed yet.
We live just short of a mile away from the school, which means they have to walk when Cute Guitar Boy is not here to drive them, which means I have to walk with them, because I think they are too little to walk almost a mile to school by themselves.
I actually don't mind that, because I could totally use the exercise. BUT when it is like 10 degrees out with a wind chill of -15, I physically can't do it - I have Raynaud's syndrome, and if I get too cold, all sorts of bad things happen to my hands and feet. Like, my feet are purple just from taking the dog out for like 5 minutes a little while ago, so walking a mile to school and then a mile back home - while good exercise that I would otherwise enjoy - is NOT a good idea. This same senario used to happen to me a long time ago. So many people say how much they miss you, will keep in touch and so on, but the fact is when you leave their City their lives go on and eventually you become a stranger. This is not true in everyones case, but what I've known to be true.

As most of you know, I am from Midland, TX, but I moved to Austin last year to go to school. It never ceases to amaze me that while I am in Austin, all of my friends from Midland go on and on about how omg they miss me! And we need to hang out!!! Yet when I come to Midland, none of my friends hang out with so I end up spending the evening by myself in my mom's house. Why do I even come back here?I know, John! Back during the summer, I was probably the most popular guy in my town. I hosted late night pool parties, that would last until dawn, with 25-30 people there, every night. I was like a rock star!(I didn't come up with that analogy, my friend did) Where are all of those friends, now? I don't know! I mean, I FB chat with some of them, but rarely see any of them now. WTF? I don't regret the summer long party(although you should have seen the liquor charges on my credit card!), because it was an awesome ride....but where are they now?
Will I do it all again, next summer? Almost for certain!:D

Sure! The more the merrier!
It's funny though, because I'm really sort of a loner. I started asking a couple of friends over, and then they started inviting people, and it just SNOWBALLED, into this giant, nightly party, that I barely had any control over. I kept my bedroom locked, and my music room locked, all the time, because there were usually 12 people or so, there, that I didn't even know. Finally, at the end of summer, one of the strangers stole some liquor, and I sort of kept a tighter lid on things, after that.
It was really strange for me, though, because like I said, I'm sort of a loner.....and to host parties like that, is just SO NOT ME. But I kind of liked it....it was like a vacation, from being myself!

Nicely nicely! I can relate to the whole "loner" thing. I'm very much a fan of my own company, but occasionally you do find yourself crawling up the wall and starting conversations with strangers because you're starved for attention lol. I don't know how you have the courage to let so many people into your personal space. I would be so uptight about people stealing/breaking/ruining something that I just wouldn't have fun. I'd be chasing after people eating food with a dust buster lol.

Had it not been for the two 1.75's of vodka and whiskey, consumed nightly, it would have driven me crazy, worrying about people breaking and stealing stuff. I kept all the entry doors locked, save for the french doors coming off of my kitchen, facing the pool. That way, at least I always had an eye on who was going into the house. But again, I made sure all my instruments(I've got about 30 guitars, mandolins, steel guitars, keyboards, etc) were NEVER seen by anyone, except a couple of close friends(and they knew not to mention them).
But after about 8 whiskey/cokes, one tends to not worry about sh*t!:D

See, I actually like Cameron. I voted Tory (which is not something most students would admit, although, I'm guessing a fair few of them DID vote Tory. Get them drunk enough, and I've heard confessions).
I'm not a big fan of Labour, at all. Being a History student, it's quite a common pattern. Labour debt - Tory cuts - Labour debt - Tory cuts.
Still, one thing I will say about the government;
"Nick Clegg: Deputy Prime Minister" - most hilarious way any politician has been introduced. Ever.
I imagine their exchange goes like this
Clegg "Can I introduce a policy this week, please? Can I? Pleeease?"
Cameron "Be quiet. Have a toffee"

Wow *blink*.... I suppose you're right, though. They seem to follow the pattern so they can clean up the mess the others left behind.
My friend, a term I use loosely, voted Tory before fleeing to Spain on a student exchange program. My left wing friends (not me. I could be left wing but I like nice things :p) are gonna kill him. Kind of hope he doesn't come back, just so he can stay alive hehe.
Clegg reminds me of the young boys they had as "Slaves" for the older Private School boys. I can just see him with a hot crumpet up his arse, ala Blackadder while he does the Tories laundry. "Giggles at the image of him hopping up and down holding his arm up like an eager young school child*.

Exactly. Me and my friend were having this debate in Starbucks the other day (she also voted Tory) and it seems that this is why there's so much stigma towards voting Tory, because they introduce necessary spending cuts, after Labour overspend on popular policies - but on things we simply cannot afford. I like Labour in principal, but, in practice, I just don't think it works. Look at the Blair generation, it was on the news today that only 40% of Primary schools are at the standard level in reading, writing and maths. Which is quite shocking really.
Although, I look at the work my younger cousins have, and it looks so much easier than the work I had when I was their age. I don't know if that's just because I'm older and it IS easier... or what.
Sorry. I totally went off on one. This is why I don't talk politics, I get really into it and just babble boring crap for ages. Sorry

I don't think Politics in general works in practice, to be honest with you. For every action a Government take to ammend a wrong, there is a positive and a negative aspect to the decision. And naturally (Being British and thus cynical I'm sure has alot to do with this lol) we as the public focus on the negative, attacking the Government for it whilst missing the positive completely. Although I suppose that does depend on the magnitude and scale of the positive and negative reactions in balance. Eg. Plus side of recycling = One new box of Kleenex. Negative side of recycling = Some schmo at the factory blowing his nose on every fifth tissue "for a laugh". You're not going to buy a box of Kleenex, are you? Pretty crude example, but the point made sense in my head at least hehe! It's half past 1 in the morning. Go to bed Bee. You're typing backwards (but correcting still).

There's ways and means of getting your point across, and violence only alienates the people you need to listen.
Activate the Queen? You make her sound like a weapon. Ooo...Is her Pacemaker connected to the shiny red button in the Governmental Office? I may just start referring to her as the Omega 13 from now on lol (Joke only makes sense if you've seen Galaxy Quest hehe)

If you wrap them and put them under the Tree for yourself then we are really on the same Page :D As a treat I wrapped up a Rolling Stones T Shirt and four Stevie albums for me to open gleefully Christmas morn :p
Hahaha. I bought myself a peace sign necklace that is totally Nancy Wilson. I also have 3 Stevie albums coming from myself! I don't know if they are going to get here before Christmas, but if they do they might just go under the tree,.
My Mom bought me Heart tickets as part of my Christmas present, and I'm going to print them out soon and wrap them so I can open them on Christmas and be all surprised and happy. Mom thinks I'm nuts, so don't feel bad..

With so many in this thread from England, I have questions- What are your various opinions of the Royal Family? Namely The Queen, Prince Charles, Camilla, Harry and William? Is it so, as it seems, that no-one is concerned much with the husband of The Queen? He seems off the radar, here in The States.
1. Many Americans get their opinions about the British Royal Family via the television. It seems like they are held in high regard by their loyal subjects. Are there many discontent, who speak out unfavorably? Do other English people shun those, also English, who don't love the Royals? Or, is the population generally happy with them, and no division of much importance exists on the topic?
2. Does Prince Charles have a last name? He must. You all must know it. It's like he's Madonna or Cher, we never hear a last name here in The States. What is The Queen's first, maiden name, and married last name? Is she thought to still be sound of mind, or is her agedness of concern to the country's population?
3. Is media coverage in Europe as 'fawning' over The Royals as what I have seen here in The States? It's strange to me, because the commentators speak of The Queen like she is this impish little darling, almost like one would speak of a favorite pet who learned a new trick. I find this odd, but realize it is a different culture. There are 2 news reporters, both British, who often would be interviewed on US television about the Queen, and they'd take such delight in her, and I always wondered why. One was male, the other female, and they both had giddy tones when discussing The Royals, such joy. Is that only for media outside of your country? I suspect coverage may be more balanced, for you there.
4. Socially, is Harry off-limits, regarding any discussion of a possibility that Prince Charles is not really his biological father? Here in The States, there had been speculation (that has died down) about this topic.
5. Does the population generally regard the titles of "Sir" and "Dame" with great seriousness and reverence? Would it be considered in very bad taste to ever joke about them? For example, saying "Dame Elton John" and "Sir Judi Dench"- would that make people angry in your culture? Or to speculate about in the future there being a "Sir Boy George," "Sir James Hewitt", or "Dame Amy Winehouse?" I suspect that it might not be something people would joke about in England, but would like to know, for certain.
I have many other questions, but that's plenty for now. I have a lot of interest in and respect for the British. I would like to live in London, and, I think, get old and die there. After my parents are gone, hopefully a long time from now, I completely see myself leaving America. At the very least; an extended stay in London likely will be in my future, unless I were to die before doing so, which could definitely reduce my chances!

I'm American, and obviously far less knowledgeable on this subject than the Brits, but I was raised by a troop of English nannies, visit often and spent a summer in Oxford, so I thought I'd add in my two cents.
From what I can tell, feelings about the royals remain extremely mixed. Some love them, some consider the idea of a monarchy outdated and offensive. And though I'm definitely lacking in knowledge here, I think there's a great deal of controversy regarding royal functions being paid for by the taxpayers. I think security for the wedding is coming from taxes. Wasn't there a similar debacle in Sweden recently about Princess Victoria's wedding?
The royals use the surname Mountbatten-Windsor.
The Queen's first name is Elizabeth. As far as I know, she remains very much of sound mind. I don't think think it would be a great concern to the British people, though, if she became a bit spotty--it isn't as though she's making serious political decisions. I do admire Queen Elizabeth--I think she's conducted her life with a great deal of dignity.
I have no idea whether Harry's paternity is considered "off-limits," but from what I've heard, it seemed that those claims were dubious at best.
FWIW, I'm really ready for the wedding to happen already so the press can move on. Today I was checking people.com (why yes, I am addicted to celeb gossip) and they had an article titled "5 things to know about Will and Kate's wedding officient!"
REALLY? William and Catherine (as we are now calling her) seem to be perfectly pleasant people, but I don't find either of them even remotely interesting. That anyone could have been wondering about the Anglican minister performing the ceremony is unfathomable to me.

Ooh. Just saw this.
Maybe you don't hear about Prince Phillip and his numerous controversies over in the US, but in England, he's pretty notorious for putting his foot in it. Example, I heard this on a TV show -
"What would Prince Phillip say?"
"Something racist, probably"
I see Andrew, Beatrice and Eugene in the papers quite often, same with Anne, but, it's mainly all about the Queen, Charles, Camilla and the two lads.
1) I think that everyone just excepts that the Royal Family are... there. They're still adored by some members of society; such as the hysteria over the William/Kate engagement proves. I think people "grumble" about them, from time to time, but they would never get rid of them.
2) I thought the Royal Family's last name was just "Windsor" could be mistaken though. As for the Queen, I'd bet a tenner that if someone isn't a fan of the Royal Family, they'll grudgingly respect the Queen. For some, they don't have the time of day for any of the Royals, other than the Queen.
Her age is never mentioned, other than "Now in her 80s, the Queen shows no signs of slowing down" etc.
3) I'd say the coverage is a lot more balanced over here. While we DO get the gushing types, there are those quick to criticise the Monarchy, or at least, not act like the sun shines out of their every orifice.
4) I don't think it's mentioned, I'd never heard about it until recently, which surprised me. I think it's the whole notion of almost making Diana a saint in the media that stops that question being discussed.
5) Eh. With Dame and Sir, they're just honorific titles, there's always speculation about who will be in the New Years Honours list... but generally, I don't think anyone cares, or at least, they won't be offended if you take the mick out of them.
A Dame Amy Wino is a scary thought. What would she WEAR to the ceremony?
Hehe. Not all Girls. I have only a couple of pairs and I'm happy with that. I don't see the point of shoes as a fashion accessory, rather an implement designed to fulfil a purpose.

Never sane lol. But I agree with you. That money could be spent so much more wisely on alot more than shoes that you'll be too afraid to wear because they're so expensive, thus inevitably become pricey ornaments. Please accept my sincere 'thank you' for your wonderfully descriptive and patient reply, it was so interesting to read. I realize it required you to be generous in giving of your time to respond in such detail, and I appreciate it very much.
If you are open to 3 more questions; it would be lovely of you to indulge me, if you are not, please disregard the following. I won't bombard you with future inquiries. :)
1. I'm curious about 'shop hours' of stores; and for some reason, wonder about food stores, you know, supermarkets, grocery stores, whatever the term would be there. Are any open for business at midnight, or 24 hours a day? Are there any large grocery 'chains' of stores, like in the US, we have Safeway, Stop N Shop and quite a few, really, depending on the locale.
As for department stores, I have heard of Harrod's, of course, but wonder if you have the store Target there, or Macy's or Lord and Taylor?
2. Are taxi-cabs plentiful, or are there 'drivers' for hire, for Americans who maybe feel nervous about being capable of driving properly in your country?
3. Would you advise of 2 areas to avoid, because of them being dangerous?
Thank you, again, Artemis, your reply made my night!

I'll intercept even though I'm not a Brit. :p The retail landscape is pretty much similar to America's. I was in a tiny little village on the coast of Scotland, but they had this ginormous Tesco grocery store right in the middle of everything- looked exactly like any Stop n Shop in the States. Reasonably priced too. Booze is a bargain. There are also lots of O2 shops that are open 24 hours a day. As for department stores, Harrods is the behemoth and it is super-high end; it makes the Macy's on 34th Street in NYC look like a KMart by comparison. They have their own big department stores like Marks and Spencers (which seems like a Kohls to me, although some of them have a really nice grocery section). There's also Debenhams and Selfridges (like Macy's). My all-time fave store in the UK is Habitat, which is like a better, more stylish version of West Elm or Crate and Barrel. It is maddening that Habitat has not opened a store in the States. Oh, and for some bizarre reason, the UK version of TJ Maxx is called "TK Maxx."
2. Are taxi-cabs plentiful, or are there 'drivers' for hire, for Americans who maybe feel nervous about being capable of driving properly in your country?
There are drivers for hire, but they are costly. In fact, everything transit-related is costly except for the London Buses, which are plentiful and very convenient. I drove on the "wrong side of the road." It's. just. not. right. It's not for the faint of heart. I would definitely recommend taking the bus or train instead.

Since we all know that you're okay, please do go into more details about your driving incident there! It sounds like you have a story or two in you about it, I know I wouldn't be able to drive there. Add poor night vision to nearly 30 years of American driving habits, it'd be a disaster.
I am sure I'm probably wrong about the following, but I picture that all European cars have standard transmission, and I never did learn to drive anything but an automatic.

I didn't drive in the UK; I drove in New Zealand, where they also drive on the wrong side of the road. I rented a Nissan Tiida, aka, "Versa" with an automatic tranny (thank Buddah!). It freaked me out while trying to navigate myself through the streets of Auckland. But once I was on the "freeway" and I was in the midst of traffic, I was fine. But once I started driving the narrow, winding state roads up and down hills, I tended to veer to the left side of the lane since that is where I am accustomed to viewing the road. Not cool when you are driving on a narrow shelf cut into the side of a steep cliff! You really have to remind yourself constantly that you have to stay in the right side of the lane. Anyway, I managed to drive the entire length of the north island- Auckland to Wellington- without incident. It's actually an incredibly lovely drive.

I know I've told the story, before, but the instructor lost my last assignment, and gave me a D+(C- is the minimum grade in your major, in order to not have to retake the class). I spent several hours, sitting on the floor of his office, until I found the paper he had lost. There it was, still ungraded!!! He changed my grade, and apologized, and I didn't have to retake that mutha!!!:blob2:

Sometimes blocking is easier said than done. My Mother has a problem with a couple of bitter people at the moment, who keep creating accounts with different identities and using them to abuse her. It's really starting to get tiring now. I spent alot of the evening arguing with one of them, who in all fairness surprised me in the fact that she could work a computer, she appeared that dense.

Actually, I ate breakfast and gave myself insulin for it but my pump ran out of insulin in the middle of the dose. All I had to do was switch out the infusion site, however I was about to take a shower and the adhesive will not stick if you take a shower right after inserting it, so I took a shower first and then inserted it and gave the remainder of my dose. Therefore, I went about an hour with carbs in my body without the insulin to counteract them. Dumb dumb dumb on my part. But, to refer to your "something you're not supposed to eat" part, there is nothing I cannot eat. I can eat anything, I just have to administer the correct dose of insulin to counteract that. Therefore, fluctuations in blood sugar do with too little or too much insulin administered. But it isn't a simple science of X amount of insulin for X amount of carbs. Your liver continuously releases glucose into the bloodstream, and that amount fluctuates too. Also, just because a package says it has 42 grams of carbs, it does not mean it is completely accurate. Also, your sensitivity to insulin can fluctuate. And your blood sugar meter can be off by 20%, so if it says you are 200, you may be 160, but you take insulin to correct a bloodsugar of 200 and now you end up low. Therefore, there are many variables that cause your blood sugar to go high or low, and many times they aren't the fault of the diabetic.

Does the pump determine, by itself, what you need? Or do you adjust the dosage, according to what you just ate? You just know that so many cc's of insulin, counteract so many grams of carbs?

Yikes, aperfectlie, those were serious fluctuations.
Did the 400s reading affect your mood, I mean, before you knew that it was in the 400s?
I'm asking because with my Mom, a very high number can be accompanied by a vicious, incredibly angry mood swing- it seems to be a sign that she may be running high.
I wondered, and testing confirmed it- tonight, in fact. It was 402.
I'd been out Christmas shopping, my Dad said she had been 'low'- I checked the book we keep, and her reading was 108, which actually had always been a fine number for her, until the doctor changed the insulin dosages, not permitting a shot unless she is 170 or higher.
My dad, feeling she was 'low' gave her a miniature piece of 'Mounds' candy, and it spiked her way up. Had I been there, I'd never have let him give her the candy, that's only for when she would be below 70, hopefully that will never happen again.
A reading of 27 landed her in the hospital this year, but 108 should not require she be given pure sugary coconut and chocolate. They should both know this, and did, at one time. They forget that 100 or more is fine, and think she's 'low' if she can't take the insulin, when actually 108 is dandy.
I felt very defeated about the whole thing, he should have known not to do what he did, and she should have known not to eat it.
The lows are more life-threatening than highs, correct? Even at your young age, I mean.
Maybe you didn't eat enough for you to register 60? Or slept longer than usual, causing the number to drop? Or perhaps it was just the maddening, unpredictable disease itself just being difficult with no real reason for it to have happened. You poor kid. But you are strong and super smart, you'll be great. In fact, I think you may find a cure!
I hope you are feeling better.

The pump does no thinking on its own. It constantly gives you insulin to counteract the body's normal rise in glucose, but I work with my doctor to find out how many units I need per hour and then program those hourly rates into the pump. Also, when I eat I have to manually input the insulin dosage. Figuring out how much insulin you need per amount of carbs is something I had to figure out with my doctor. Right now I take 1 unit for every 8 grams. Another thing my doctor and I had to calculate was my sensitivity, how much your blood sugar drops per 1 unit of insulin administered. Right now one unit of insulin drops my blood sugar 36 mg/dl, which I use to correct high blood sugar. Luckily, the pump has a program installed and I simply input these two ratios, 1 unit/8 grams and 36mg/dl per unit of insulin and then when I go to give myself insulin I enter my blood sugar number and the amount of carbs I am eating and it does the calculations and shows me the number of units I should inject, but I have to approve that number and tell the pump to go ahead and administer that dose. So essentially all the pump does is the math and administers what I tell it to give me.
Yikes, aperfectlie, those were serious fluctuations.

Yes, fluctuations do cause mood swings and when they get into the 400s, you really begin to feel physically ill. Since I try to control my blood sugar tightly, it is difficult to not get lows, but I am able to minimize them. Sometimes it has to do with "overshooting", as in thinking there are more carbs in a certain food or thinking your blood sugar is higher than it actually is. Another problem is the pure unpredictability of the disease. You can eat the EXACT same things and take the EXACT same insulin on two consecutive days and get drastically different results. And yes, lows are much more life threatening than highs. Highs of course can cause long term complications, but you have to be high for around 36 hours before you enter into diabetic ketoacidosis, which is a deadly condition caused by high bloodsugar. Therefore, a 400 will make you feel like **** and will do microscopic damage to your body, but you have hours, even days to correct it before it takes your life. However, the brain needs glucose just like it needs oxygen. Low blood sugar is the equivalent of suffocation for the brain. If your blood sugar drops, you have about 20 min to correct it, give or take a few depending on how fast and low the drop is, before it can cause permanent brain damage or death.

Informative, as always, aperfectlie. I am sorry that I missed the information you originally did provide, that the need to shower had partially caused the low reading, because of needing to refill the insulin pump and that the skin can't be wet when re-calibrating it all.
I usually need to read your writings twice, sometimes a third time, because there is so much information, so I go back, re-read, and find that you've usually already answered what I wondered about.
I don't know if you saw it, but in some thread, somewhere, last week, I told you that I really believe that the medical profession needs you.
Should your studies lead you to medicine; be it biomedical engineering, becoming a medical researcher, nurse or doctor, or anything that you can lend that microscopic attention to detail you write with to, I think you'd have a brilliant career.
Of course, there is a huge possibility that you have interests in endeavors that have absolutely nothing to do with health care, and have been forced to use your mind and energy on diabetes simply because you have the intelligence and strong survival instincts. Likely, that mind of yours would find it stultifying to only focus on health related issues.
So by all means, go for the bliss, whatever it may be! One thing that really sucks about diabetes is that one never gets a break from it, not once a day, even- it's a relentless presence that demands attention, at all times.
Most people have no idea of how the disease touches every aspect of the person's life who has it. You are an inspiring example of someone who just handles a hardship expertly and does so in a matter-of-fact way without complaining or self-pity. You're amazing in that facet of your character, no bitching and moaning, just strength and intelligence. That is a great deal to be proud about.
