So you think you'll be able to go? :D I didn't want to be too over-congratulatory before it was likely

Well.... I don't really know, but I think it's a decent chance. Decent enough that I'm letting myself get a little excited. Watch me screw myself over, though. My dad's being a bit inconsistent right now (this morning he was in a bad mood and making the New York thing sound iffy too when yesterday, it was a done deal) so I shouldn't say anything one way or another.

Mostly Wiltshire, Somerset, and Kent.

My boyfriend's family live a little more north, in Kensington.

Oh cool, Wiltshire and Somerset are pretty close to where I am in South Wales... by "pretty close" I mean like an hour and a half away which I supposed isn't that close at all

Congrats.

I go to England all the time to visit my family and my boyfriend's family. You'll be in the North East though, and I usually go to the South. I would love to meet you, though. :wavey:

Myself, Rowan, Georgie and a few others were discussing a "Ledgie Reunion" in England a while ago, actually. It would be nice to get together and just hang out for a while. We already know we have something in common lol!

...That I am royally pissed about the cancellation of All My Children and One Life to Live. I spent almost a year interning at One Life and absolutely loved everyone there--incredibly nice people who treated their interns with respect.
Soaps get a bad rap (often deservedly--there are some hilarious spoofs out there), but quality really is impressive given the amount of material they have to pump out, evil twins and all. I feel terrible for my former co-workers who absolutely slaved for these shows, and for the larger television industry in New York--it was a great gig for a lot of actors.
And though I realize soaps are kind of a ridiculous thing to get sappy about, I really feel for the viewers, many of whom have been watching for decades. In no other genre can you follow a character throughout his life like that.
This sucks.

I have no idea how to embed, but let's remember happier/campier times with a brilliantly over the top clip of Elizabeth Taylor in her cameo as Helena Cassadine:

I watched AMC from 1977 until November of 2010. I stopped watching it because it was really boring and had been really boring for almost 2 years. I have watched OLTL since 1993 and it is the only tv show I currently watch. I love the show, though its ending is bittersweet for me. Truthfully it is hard to keep up with a daily tv show. My interests no longer are with tv. They are strictly computer related. So I'm sad and relieved all at the same time.

Congratulations on getting into Durham University Dani.

I live about 20 miles from there. Durham is a lovely city. The university does have a newer campus about 5 miles from where I live in a town which is, unfortunately, not too pretty so hopefully you will study in Durham itself if you come over. It is near Newcastle (where I first saw the Mac on their Say You Will tour) which is a wonderful city and has excellent night life.

Well done once again!

Ha--it actually really was. The other interns and I would act out the scripts in mock dramatic voices while we photocopied them and SoapNet was on in every office all day long. I wasn't a huge soap viewer before I worked there or after (TBH, I haven't watched in months), but it was kind of hilarious being surrounded by them all day.
Yup--end of the line for soaps. Soon there will be 4 soaps left (and DOOL is not long for this world). There were 9 just a couple of years ago:(

I'm fairly certain said co-worker went up to a girl who's interested in the guy I post overly-emotional things about and said I was hotter. WHY WOULD THAT HAPPEN? I also need to do my financial aid forms now. I made out with some random man. That part is actually kind of funny. I hope he was attractive. I have a meeting in a few hours. Time to call my mother!

Sounds like a fun internship!

I went to college with the actress who plays "Amanda" on All My Children. We had some mutual friends, so I'd often see her at parties and such.

I used to watch the soaps in their 80s glory with my mom and grandmother as a kid. My mom's favorite was Y&R. Every now and then I will catch a few minutes of it, and I only recognize some of the characters.

Durham, as small a place as it is, is actually classed as a city in England. If a "town" in England has a cathedral, which Durham has, then it is known as city. This has been the case for hundreds of years until recently, and to confuse matters, three towns have recently been given city status although they do not have catherdrals. Then we also have the matter of an old popular (in England ) folk song from the sixties called "Durham Town".......... but it is definitely the city of Durham - and, like you stated Louie, a very beautiful city it is. I visit it frequently.

I shall share three things, because three sounds like a nice number to me right now:
- I have the whole house to myself for the entirety of next week. I have no idea what I'm going to do. Maybe bring my guitar and one of my keyboards into the living room and make lots of loud noise at 2am and not have anyone yell at me for a change.
- Yesterday I bought a new toy to put in my birdcage (a wooden ladder thing) and it's already been chewed to sawdust. I think they've broken their record for fastest destroyed toy.
- I really really hate forums for the most part. Very rarely do I get involved in one. I find them awkward. It's hard to get going when everyone knows each other already and little alliances and cliques have been formed and people talk about things that happened years prior and blah blah blah. Having said that, so far this one is all right. I don't mean the structure or anything (it's a very nice and well organized board), but just my personal experience so far - could be better I guess, could be worse. Yay.
Ugh I'm so lame.

You'll need to take more than usual for it to be as effective, though. Just take 3 instead of 2 or something, because any more than that could be potentially dangerous.

You won't have "sudden liver failure" from taking one more pill than usual (especially since they've lost potency from being so old). My mother is a pharmacist and I know a lot about these things. I've overdosed on various forms of acetaminophen in the past too, so I've picked up some knowledge.

Chances are he won't. But why needlessly increase that chance? And without knowing his medical situation, why do you feel that you are empowered to give medical advice anonymously over the internet? What if something really happened? Does that make you culpable? When you have sudden hepatic failure, you're pretty much done.

You say "why needlessly increase that chance" - well, isn't taking Tylenol at all needlessly increasing that chance? Some drugs and medications are needed, but with Tylenol you could always just suck it up and deal with the pain. Also, it's proven fact that medications lose potency when they're that old, so it's not like taking three instead of two is taking any more than usual.
I kind of hate forums. People get upset with other people too easily and it's just too hard to fit in. I feel like I'm constantly walking on eggshells here because I don't want to annoy anyone. Looks like I failed at that. Oops.

FWIW, I agree with you about the Tylenol--your advice sounded pretty reasonable to me.
I'm a newbie too, and I feel you: forums can be tough.
But while I can't speak for Hejira, I'm pretty sure she was not trying to attack you. From everything I've seen, she's an intelligent, thoughtful poster--you'll see too if you stick around. That was just one of the many little forum disputes that everyone forgets about quickly. No one is mad at you; you don't have to skulk away. My advice: get more comfortable with the idea that disagreements will happen, and some posts may sound a little snappish (an inevitability in online communication). If you write reasonable posts and have something to contribute (and you seem like you do), no one will care about the occasional difference of opinion. Water off a duck's back.;)

I think I'm just completely socially inept too. Eh.
I'm sure I'll loosen up in time though. I usually do.

Oh, I'm so happy right now. I've just spent the past three hours catching up with my friend, I haven't seen her for a year and a half, and it was so much fun. Some wine, some good stories and lots of laughs.

Only thing is, I'm not out to her yet, so her asking "Any girls you like" was a bit awkward.

Whatcha getting?

Ughhhh I'm frustrated. I have this friend who absolutely needs his alone time. If you're around him, he's incredibly sociable, but once you're gone, he pretty much wants to be able to shut down. I'm...not quite like that, and I know I drive him crazy all the time sending him texts about random things throughout the day that he really doesn't care about.

I just ran into this picture on the wide world of the internet:

http://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lhnv38gxpQ1qzaam9.jpg

DO YOU KNOW HOW BADLY I'M DYING TO TEXT IT TO HIM?

This is the first time I recall you mentioning your sexuality here on the Ledge. Welcome to a brand new world outside of the closet! Coming out is definitely a journey. But I find it to be infinitely more satisfying to just be who I am. If you ever need to vent or need advice, there are loads of us older Ledgies who have been there and done that :).

I know how that is... I'm much the same way. Even though I'm undoubtedly older than you (28 going on 29), I still take things hard. But the good thing about getting older is you at least get over stuff more quickly. You don't have time to be distracted... there's always some bigger issue to deal with!

So I must vent. I met an awesome guy at the club a few weekends ago. We spent a good time talking and some drunk woman was fawning over us. Well she was clearly ready for bed. But he said "I think she wants us to make out (to which I chuckled) and I flatly refused. Well fast forward. I found out he was a 2 time emmy nominee and voted best looking guy in his field. Well I was already swooned by him as it were... Guess I missed my mark. Well fast forward again... I haven't heard from him since. Well I think I will listen to 'Beautiful Stranger' now

There's a married guy at work that I'm pretty sure wants me. I've noticed a longing look in his eye pretty much every time he talks to me. Plus, he gave me his phone number (he said that he gave it to everyone, but I have my doubts).

He's a slightly older (maybe 40-ish), slightly bearish daddy type, but a geeky daddy, if that makes sense. Honestly, if I wasn't in a relationship, I'd probably hit it.

I'll be sure to keep that in mind, thanks :) It's a really weird situation for me. I'm totally in the closet to my family (until I have my own place and don't have to deal with my father every day) and the friends I've known for years, yet, everyone I've met at Uni, I haven't even attempted to hide it; maybe it's because these people never knew me before and therefore have no pre-conceptions of me.

I had a super day today. Me and My friend kicked ass in our presentation. Emma was so nervous she had to go to the bathroom three times in about ten minutes, bless her. But, it went ridiculously well and we got some really excellent feedback and comments from the Teacher, so that's great. I have my life back; I no longer have to sacrifice hours of every day working on this sodding presentation. We were supposed to be in a group of three, but the other girl never showed up and has been ducking our calls / texts / emails, so we've had to do extra work. It totally paid off though, so I've had a smile on my face all day :]

I hear ya. My parents think Rachel is a friend from college. I can't tell them that she's my girlfriend because my Mum is a big mouth and will tell my Gran. I'd rather an A bomb landed on the village than than happening. Yet I'm open about it with some friends and online.

Last night, Rach came round for a bbq and I mentioned that I was going to a house party tomorrow at a friend called Joe's. My parents went on to have a massive conversation about how he was totally my boyfriend. Then they decided that I'd tell them if he was my boyfriend. She and I just sat there going gradually redder. It was AWFUL.

We'll be okay, though, you and I

Boy, I'm so glad I don't have to deal with all of that anymore. It's just so much less stressful to me to just be upfront with everyone about who I am. There was definitely an adjustment period when I came out to my family. But it's wonderful now that that's over. I've been taking my boyfriends to meet my parents for years... we stay over at their house in my old room, I drag all my gay friends to meet my parents and party at their lake house, etc. Now, my Mom and her crazy biker friends are sad when I visit and DON'T bring my entire gay posse! Yeah, coming out was a tough pill to swallow at first, but now that I've been out for a decade, life is so much better than when I kept hidden who I was :).

(too bad I dont take more care when putting things in my mouth, but thats another story!) ANyhoo, my dad was a cop so it was even harder with him. He was lukewarm at first but he grew to not care either which was a big relief for me!:) It's also really weird being gay and being a big sports fan. I know there are gay guys out there that like sports but they are few and far between it seems. My current bf does somewhat share my sports interest so that really helps.

Random question, but does it make me a snob for refusing to buy from a website with abundant spelling mistakes? To me, if they have such a blase attitude towards proof reading, how do they feel about the more important things? Like internet security and secure buying? At least when I'm in a shop I can put a face to the person stealing my money...

Like you said, everybody has a right to their own opinions. I'm sure you say awful things about things you don't likem and I'm even more sure you wouldn't like to be told to shut up rather than expressing your thoughts. It's immature to expect people to restrain themselves because it conflicts with a personal belief.

Why do some people feel that if a phone is ringing or someone is knocking at the door, they *must* answer it?

I can't stand talking on the phone. I have a pre-paid cell phone, and a grand total of about 4 people have the number. I use it for emergencies and personal business. I do not chat on the phone. I just don't. So, if it rings, 9 times out of 10, I'm not expecting a call. So not only do I usually not answer, 99% of the times that it rings, I don't even look to see who it is. Drives my bf up a wall. He can't stand that I refuse to go running to the phone if it rings.

I also don't answer the door if I'm not expecting anyone. Usually, if somebody knocks and we're not expecting anyone, it's either a nosy neighbor or somebody selling something. And I don't care to get roped into a conversation with either. The bf also has a hard time extrapolating himself from salesman spiels. I think he understands the door thing now, but he still seems to think of a ringing phone as a summons.

My philosophy is - my phone is there for my convenience, not yours. :)

OMFG.

Never, have I read someone describe EXACTLY how I feel about both the phone, and people showing up at my house, unannounced.
I usually say, WTF do you fukcing WANT?, when I see my answering machine flashing.
And I too, won't answer the door, if I'm not expecting someone. I actually severed ties with a friend from high school, because he is the KING of pop ins. Not here, pal. He's gotten in touch with me on FB recently, but I'm not biting. Yeah, he's a nice guy, but if I let it start, and he finds out where I live, I'll be subjected to his constant pop ins.
Ann Landers said, years ago, 'in this day of emails, telephone, cell phones, telegraph, instant messaging, etc....there is no excuse for the pop in'.

Thanks! The gym is only a few mos old so it's all neat and sparkly and cheap! That of course was part of the motivation. I'm loving this new 20 buck a month gym concept!

What do you do at the gym? Cardio? Weights? I plan to do both, alternating and stuff. I just never know how much is enough or too much. I should probably spend the dough and meet with a trainer a few times.

i'm a cardio type of girl, but i'm soooooo not afraid of the weight room. lately i do the following:

monday - 1/2 elliptical and kickboxing class and abs class
tuesday - spin class and weights
wednesday - off
thursday - kickboxing and weights
friday - ass/abs class, cardio

Wow girl..you spend some Q time at Crunch! You are getting your money's worth. That's awesome that you are so dedicated. I'm starting slow...about an hour 4 or 5 times a week. So far i've been splittling about an hour with the elliptical and treadmill and tomorrow my plan is to do weights. This gym is weights and cardio only, so no classes, but i was never one for classes anyway. Although i did like yoga.

2600 a month is obscene. That's more than rent in nyc!

I use the machines...Theres this machine where you're knealing on this thing and you set the weights to whatever and you have to rotate...and I dont use sissy weights lol I've been using like 90lb weights...and I do each side 10 times...3 times each...So 30 on each side

Theres another machine where you practically do a crunch but its way harder then an actual crunch LOL and you can add weights...This ones harder so I use 20lbs

Then I use the thing where your dangling from it and you can lift your knees up

WICKED good youtube channel for work outs!!!

:lol:My mother used to say, "Only boring people get bored," every single time we complained of boredom. It was a pretty good method of shutting up three whiny pre-schoolers! In fact, to this day I literally never refer to boredom (I do, however, whine about pretty much everything else--not my best quality). Even hearing the words makes me uncomfortable.
Mama was pretty darn good at training her monkeys.

Mark, as if you needed another lecturing mother in your life, mine would bark "Read a book! Go outside! Take a walk!"

It gets softer after a few days... The first day it looks pretty ...big .. :o

If you want to become a kindergarten teacher in germany, you have to go to school for like 5 years. I am done with my 4 years the last year is working and school every once in a while.

If you want to become a kindergarten teacher in germany, you have to go to school for like 5 years. I am done with my 4 years the last year is working and school every once in a while.
It s a long time , i am glad when i finally can start to earn my own money :blob2:

how long do you have to go to school ?

Oh wow you live in Germany?!?!
My best friend is going to school for Special Education. I think her last year she works in a classroom or something like that...

I really wish I could be just as obsessed with another artist as I am with Stevie although it would be even more expensive but at least it would be some variety instead of having one person. Growing up it was Madonna then of course it changed to Stevie so I suppose it could change again but I highly doubt it.

Red hair fades wicked fast lol Even reddish hair..red hair color molecules are larger and wash out easier...but that color really isnt like RED...its more of a chocolate brown...Tomorrow at school I'll look at our color swatches and suggest something for you =) What products does your salon use?

You know what you should get? Joico has an AMAZING reconstructor system...at school we call it the 4 step
1) Shampoo twice with our clarifying shampoo(Either Chealting or the KPak Shampoo)
2) Cuticle Sealer(seals the cuticle of your hair and brings your hair to its naturak pH)
3) Deep Penetrating Reconstructor(high in protiens that build healthy hair)
4) Intense Hydrator(name speaks for itself)

Between each step you towel dry your hair so the products thoroughly penetrate the hair and you leave each thing on for 5 minutes then rinse. Some people leave the reconstructor on for like 30 minutes lol

Even if you just wanted the reconstructor...that works amazing even by itself

P.S. I'll send you some pics via skype or fb or even here lol

I think your dark hair has an incredible color and texture. You have such dark features, too. I just think you couldn't possibly look more stunning than you already do if you did a single thing to change your looks. Your long, luxurious, dark hair is your thing. Rock what you got, I say. You have this kinda retro almost earthy '70s beauty and style that I think would be ruined if you went blonde. I mean, I think you look most amazing in that second pic where your don't even have any makeup on. Most people would kill for your features, skin tone, and hair. That's just my personal opinion, though. :)

Ok, so both of my parents are alcoholics. I know this is random, and maybe a bit inappropiate, but i just reached that point in my life, where i feel like i need to talk about it. I never do. Like my mom would say, it's some kind of a "big family secret" (she obviously says that because, if someone knows, her social life would be destroyed...).
They've always been really nice to me, and there's always been a strong bound between us, but i can't handle it anymore. I'm starting to be more and more agressive, and they don't get it, cause once again, they really are good parents. But i can't watch them killing themselves in front of me, and i can't listen to them saying that this is a normal situation. I know they are unhappy, if they're drinking, and i don't know what to do about it. My sister and i are necessarily responsible for it, cause they're working so hard for us, and i know that might be one reason of the fact that they're so unhappy. Probably the main reason, actually.
I don't know what to do, and my mom is telling me that i'll never change anything. I'm so scared for their health, and for the future.

I'm really sorry to talk about it here, but i feel like The Ledge is one little place, out of the society i live in, where i won't be judged. So, that's it.

You should feel like you can put anything here. It's good to hear that your parents have been good to you. Still, like your mother said, you'll probably never change anything for them. It is all up to them whether they want to or can be different. Your words 'My sister and I are necessarily responsible for it.' shows that you are carrying way too much guilt over this. No one is responsible for what your parents do except themselves.

I'm really glad you shared that. Those are very isolating feelings, and it's so important to get them out, especially since you aren't necessarily able to tell people you know personally. For what it's worth, I think you'd be surprised by how many people have dealt with exactly what you're describing. There's so much shame around alcoholism that a lot of it gets swept under the rug, but almost everyone I know has loved an alcoholic--you're definitely not alone.
It's so hard loving someone with substance abuse issues because there's often so much good there, so much of the person you love, until another side comes out that you can't control. I assume you're still living with them (not sure if your age), but as you get older, you'll decide how much of that you want to deal with--whether the good outweighs the bad. And unfortunately, you can't make them better unless
they're willing to make themselves better. All you can do is offer encouragement and support, and try to make healthy choicesfor yourself. It's a miserable position to be in, but try to remember that you're basically powerless over their disease--it's not your fault, nor your responsibility. You do, however, have power over your relationships and your own well-being.
I'm repeating myself, but really want to hammer this in: you did not cause their alcoholism. No child has the power to make their parent an alcoholic. But I realize that when you've been dealing with this guilt your entire life, a stranger over the Internet is not going to make you let go of that (I wish I could). I would strongly recommend looking into Al-anon/alateen. It's an AA affiliated programs that runs meetings for families and friends of alcoholics, and I know people who've gotten a lot out of it.
In the meantime, share anything you want to!

I know i can't do anything, but this is killing me. More than anything here, cause i'm sure it's my fault, somehow. I talked about the situation with my mother this morning, and she got really mad, cause she thought i was judging them, when really, i wasn't. I just wanted to tell her how scared and worried i was. "After all the things we've done for you and your sister, you can at least tolerate the fact that alcohol is one of those few things that we still enjoy", she said. This destroyed me, litterally. I mean, how did they get to the point where alcohol is the only thing they enjoy in their lives ?

I'm really glad you shared that. Those are very isolating feelings, and it's so important to get them out, especially since you aren't necessarily able to tell people you know personally. Well, this is exactly what it's all about. I know i just can change myself, not them. I need to be more tolerant, but sometimes, it's really really hard.
This is all about growing up, i believe. I really hope that i will learn to handle this. I'm 18, so i'm not living with my parents anymore, but still, everytime i'm back home, i feel the same way : ashamed, sad, and lonely. I just don't want to come back anymore, but i can't do that, cause i feel that they will be in an even worse situation if the person they did all those things for isn't even thankful (and that's actually what my mom said to me this morning).
I need to find a balance : i need to stay close to them, to support them, and, on the other hand, to live my life own and stop caring so much for my parents, right ?
Oh, and, for those programs, we don't have those specific ones in France, though there probably are some kind of meetings for people who live this situation. I just don't feel ready yet, it's just the first time i'm talking about it, and it's on the internet, so it doesn't feel that real and scary. What's more my parents are good to me : usually, people who are going to these meetings have worse issues to deal with.

Thank you for answering, i'm already feeling a bit better :).

Here is my future hair style but the blond will be lighter and more platinum, not so gold and all dark underneath. I used to change my hair all the time but it's been the same (long and dark) for the last 3 years and I majorly need a change. I have to wait till September though to do it because I'm getting it done at an expensive salon here in L.A. and it's going to take me that long to save up. It's going to be a major process - chemically straighten, color, cut/style.

I hesitated a looong time before posting this.

I've learned that the Ledge is a pretty safe place to share "dark" secrets. I come from a long line of addicts. Three of my grandparents were alcoholics and one was addicted to prescription medication. I'm struggling right now with painkillers. I'm not the best one for advice, but know you can talk/PM me anytime.

I agree with Louie. Your brown hair is just perfect, I'd probably cry if you bleached it. What about a full fringe?

I've thought about this.... about doing the full bangs thing. So many choices! GAH

You know that feeling when you meet someone and you skip right past the acquaintance phase and into actual friendship? I am head over heels in love with that feeling and with my new friend.

I'm really sorry you're going through this. I know there's a lot of ledgies who can relate. It's such a hard situation, but I'm really glad to hear that their drinking doesn't affect the way they treat you. It sounds like you've tried talking to your parents about it before yourself....is there any way you could talk them into family counseling?

SHE'S AMAZING. Haha. I feel like such a creep because I can't stop talking about her, but I just rarely connect with someone like this, and not only do she and I get along so well, but she told off a mutual friend of ours for treating me badly last night in a way that no one else has had the balls to do. So now I have a hero complex about her in addition

See, this is why i don't really like complaining about all of this : there are thousands of people who live the same situation, or worse. My situation is probably not that bad. Anyway, thank you everyone, you don't know how much this was important to me. Just to feel that i'm not THAT alone. I really had no idea you (Danielle and Kimberly) were going through this too, and i thank you for caring.

Oh God, this is like the best feeling in the world. It is actually falling in love, litterally.
