Well. I'm a grown ass man, but whatevs. And I find that if you get to bin-ness right away, you neglect actually getting to know eachother... And I'm totally guilty of all the hit its and quit its. But, like the song says, "I'm getting older too." And things that were alright when I was in the earlier part of my 20's, aren't really right now at 26. I do NOT know how to be a grown up.

I second this! I've always jumped into sex in dating whenever the moment calls for it. That can be on the first date, or it can be after a couple of months (though I rarely have that kind of self control ). My whole thing with dating is just be you! And if you're a sexual person, just lay it right out there! Sexual compatibility is a pretty big make or break thing in a relationship, too... so In my opinion it's best to test those waters sooner than later :p.
...and report back to us when you've crossed that bridge with your new beau, tbaker3!

I completely agree, on the sooner than later. Wait a couple of months, and it's almost like you're too good of friends, and it's awkward(I think it always works like this for me, because I'm very easy to get to know, so friendships happen very quickly, for me). I think by the 3rd date, it needs to happen, or it might be too late!
Just do it!

I should've had way more sex in my 20s than I did. The older I get, the less use I have for heteronormative approaches to sexuality (namely, concepts of virginity, "sluttiness," etc.). If having sex on the 1st date or the 10th date is what works for you, then do it. Or if you just want to hook up with somebody, or have a "friends w/ benefits" arrangement. "Eff" buddies (is that PG enough?) are wonderful, IMO.

Today was the last straw for a half century of family drama. I'm done. I'm out. Not taking it any more. The End. I'm filing for divorce from my whole entire family. I will be an orphan, I don't care. I'll be better off. It's too bad I wasn't strong enough to bow out a very long time ago. God only knows where I would be today if I hadn't had all that baggage to lug around. I would probably be a high paid architect like I wanted to be, but never got the support to do. Instead, I was made to take typing and shorthand. OMFG.

Oh boy, do I know how you feel! I just put a time zone in between my parents, brother, and I... and I feel like I'm 400 pounds lighter! Preceding that, I didn't speak to my family for about 8 months... which was unheard of for me. I spoke to my Mother nearly daily before the straw broke the camel's back. My immediate family is just toxically dysfunctional. They don't even have any interest in trying to be decent, drama free people. All they want to be is miserable, and rope everyone into their suffering.
Interestingly enough, I wanted to be an architect too... but my family also belittled me and shot me down so I wouldn't do it. I still regret to this day caving into them because of that.
Anyway, good for you! I always love reading about people who become self empowered and make big changes in their lives for the better!

Hey Louie, Thanks for sharing. I used to talk with my mother frequently too, for all the right co-dependant reasons. I feel 400 pounds light too, particularly after spending the day de-stressing yesterday. I'm thinking about moving too, that way they won't know where I live and won't be able to leave nasty notes on my doorstep like they've done in the past when I tried to cut them off. Funny that you wanted to be an architect too. That must have intimidated the heck out of them. I still regret caving on that one too. Although I've done the best I could with my life despite everything. I hope you have too! Here's a {{{{hug}}}} for you my friend.

I haven't spoken to anyone in my family, except one aunt, in over 3 years; haven't seen any of them in over 5 years. "Toxically dysfunctional" is a good way to describe them. A couple of years ago, my younger brother's girlfriend found me on FB and told me that my mother has been on methadone for the last 15 years - apparently to treat an addiction to prescription drugs (there's a long history of alcoholism and prescription drug abuse in my mother's family).
Apparently, the only people who know about this are her, my younger brother, and now me. My mother has kept it a secret from everyone.
It doesn't appear that her treatment is being monitored very well; according to brother's (now ex) girlfriend, it's made her forgetful and paranoid. She forgets that she's taken it, and thinks that someone has stolen it, so my brother bought her a safe to put it in.
Oh, and here's how the girlfriend found out about it:
GF is at my mom's house, and tells my mom about her toothache. Mom says "Wait just a minute, I'll get you something for the pain." And comes out with a cup of liquid methadone. So evidently, she's getting enough of it to keep in a safe and dole out to other people.
The whole thing is so bizarre, and I'd think the GF was lying, but it makes too much sense out of too many things. I'd suspected for a long time that my mother was on something (she's been in a couple of suspicious car accidents, and accidentally set fire to the house a couple of times - the last time, it burned to the ground). According to GF, she lays in bed all day, chain-smoking and eating Hershey's kisses.
Don't even get me started on my brothers - either one of them. Or my older brother's harpy of a wife.

Holy crap, do we have the same Mother?! My Mom is on all sorts of insane pain meds for her "back." She also gets stuff off the internet in addition to her doctors . She stays so zoned out that she tells me stories over and over (sometimes during the same phone call), etc.
My brother is a hardcore drug addict... has been in and out of rehab and jail since the age of 13. Mom is always accusing him of stealing her drugs and property too. Then she'll find what she was missing months and months later. It really wouldn't surprise me if she's on methadone herself. My Mother also has a safe to keep my brother out of her drugs and jewelry... but that doesn't stop her from losing sh!t. Then she calls me screaming and yelling and crying about it all constantly. Accusing me of anything she can think of (it makes her seething mad I stay firmly out of family matters and have lived a virtuous life). She guilts me constantly how I've essentially cut my brother out of my life, and how I won't visit them anymore. But I've seen my brother physically assault my parents while he's on crack, he's stolen from all of us for years (including my car... which he stole and wrecked), and he's just a thoroughly despicable person in all ways. And my Mom may be free of her coke habit finally (I think!), but she's definitely a prescription drug addict now.
And she wonders why I decided a while back I'd had enough, and put 1,230 miles between us?! I decided when I was a very small child that I was going to live a very happy, simple, drama free life. And I've tenaciously stuck to that. I have zero tolerance for my family's crap either. No thank you... I saw enough insanity when I was a small child to last me a lifetime.

Geez, Louie. :distress:
We should get together and commiserate. :) My mother wasn't that bad growing up - although she did frequently leave us under the dubious care of our grandmother, who was generally too zonked out on Xanax, Vicodin, Soma, and Old Crow to provide any kind of meaningful supervision. Nana even took me "doctor shopping" with her on a couple of occasions.
My younger brother is a pothead, but as far as I'm aware, he's never done anything harder than that. My mother has him pretty well f*cked up. You can't believe a word that comes out of her mouth - she's all lies and emotional manipulation. The last five years that I haven't seen her have been the most stress-free of my life. It sounds like it's past time for you to cut your mom off.

Yeah. I can pretty much see what caused it in my mother. Her parents were both deadbeats (her parents divorced when she was a kid - her dad was an alcoholic and took off shortly after that; if she saw him more than a handful of times between the ages of 7 and 30, I'd be surprised). Her mother was more interested in drinking and running around with men than with raising kids, so she frequently left my mom & her sister in the care of my great-grandparents. And I strongly suspect that my mother was sexually abused as a child. So, yeah.

04-17-2011, 08:34 PM
^Wow... it seriously all just makes so much sense now! My Mother did indeed have a very disturbing childhood. She was 1 of 6 kids living in absolute poverty. She had an older brother with Down Syndrome who repeatedly sexually assaulted her. My Grandfather ruled the family with an iron fist, and he didn't believe her claims. My Grandmother died when Mom was in her teens, and she just wouldn't even listen to my Mom when she brought up the subject. Mom then married my biological Father very young, and he was physically and mentally abusive towards her (I remember him throwing her out of moving cars and down staircases when I was young). She was also a cokehead for much of her life, too. I mean, the woman's lead a hard life up until about 20 years ago. I give her that.
But she lives such an absurdly cushy life now, that it p!sses me off when she b!tches and moans. She lives in a big log cabin with an in ground pool and a boat on a gorgeous lake, and has a husband who is totally whipped. Even when her life is 100% stable and happy she's miserable, and lashes out at others viciously and incessantly.
I actually did cut my Mom and Brother out of my life fully for nearly a year. When I decided to move to Texas last year, I called her up and she came over and I laid down the law. I moved the next week. She's been instructed not to call me if she has anything nasty, or unproductive to say. And if she starts down that path while we're talking, I tell her I have to go and immediately get off the phone. She's pretty much behaved for the past year, and we speak very little these days. I just wish she'd get help... she CAN be such an incredibly thoughtful, kind, and generous person. But she can also be a complete raging psychopath. :distress: She's pretty much pushed everyone she knows out of her life, and anytime anyone suggests she seek psychiatric help, she completely melts down and goes off the deep end. She's a real piece of work, for sure!

My parents are fine. In fact I'm in the incredibly forunate position that they have been cosistently supportive and, in particular, I have repect for my dad both as a parent and man.
My brother however, is somehow a complete f!*^ up. Three years older than me and from age 15 onwwards he's done the usual: drugs, stealing from everyone, moving in and out of home and having to get consistently bailed out, resenting me for being the "favourite" even though we were each given exactly the same chances. Ther difference is I took mine and he p****d his away.
Recently he's been homeless, penniless and got back in touch with me after a year of ignoring me. I was genuinely concerned about him and trying to get in touch but he wasn;t contacting me, or our parents, and when he finally did show up he laughed, called me a drama queen and threw my concern right back in my face - while asking for somewhere to stay (in my tiny flat) and money. No. I'm done. That may sound petty but it was the straw that broke me after years of constant crao from him.

I totally commiserate with everyone about their family issues. Right now, I'm a stressed out nervous wreck because my mother is visiting me later this week. It was a major relief the day that I moved over 400 miles away from her. I never know how she is going to be. She can go from fine to freaking out in seconds. If it wasn't for the fact that my son is her only grandchild, I would choose to have no visits with her whatsoever.

It was a major relief the day that I moved over 400 miles away from her. I never know how she is going to be. She can go from fine to freaking out in seconds. If it wasn't for the fact that my son is her only grandchild, I would choose to have no visits with her whatsoever.
Just tell yourself that this time next week it will be over and done with (or nearly?), and you can be very proud of yourself that you put your little boy first so he can see his Grandma.

Alan, our families sound much alike.
My family GETS ALONG. We don't fight. We rarely argue. We get together nearly every single holiday of the year. I eagerly look forward to seeing them all, this Sunday.
But yeah, I've got a cousin(who might as well be my brother, we were inseparable, growing up - and still inseparable, until I broke contact, 21 months ago), who's a complete fukc up. Just a terrible alcoholic. He knows it, and doesn't care that it's ruined his life. He has no life. He has a son, who's probably 15 now, and I think he's seen him once in the past 8-9 years(of course the mother has enough sense to not allow it). He's worked construction, and as a mechanic. He can pretty much do anything blue collar. Instead, he opts for "helping out" on a farm. They give him VERY little money. They do give him an old camper to live in(complete with an outhouse- no running water), and they buy him 12-15 beers a day. And that's all he wants! He could easily make 20-30K a year, but he'd rather just accept(good lord, I doubt he gets 3K a year) doing a little bit of work every day(feeding some cows and what not), and they get him drunk as payment. How sad is that?
I love him, but it was just dragging me down(I'd go pick him up every Sunday, and he'd come down and stay with me, a couple of days a week). He has a TERRIBLE temper, which he never took out on me, until the last month or so that we hung out. Once he started taking it out on me, throwing tantrums, and screaming at me, I.was.done. He knows that I love him, but I'm not going through that.

Something that's really frustrating is the fact that people who come from relatively functional families tend to not be able to understand people who have had to stop contact with their own family members. It's something I don't like to talk about too much, because I open myself up to comments about blood being thicker than water, and how could I not want to communicate with them, maybe if I just tried harder we could all get along, can't I just overlook it, "but it's your faaaaaamily," etc.
None of that is possible. My mother, especially, is truly incapable of genuine emotion that does not have the manipulation of another person as its ultimate goal. She can say all the right things, but it's simply talk. She lies about everything and constantly seeks attention (whether it's good or bad attention makes no difference). You cannot have a real conversation with her - anything she says is just smoke & mirrors designed to put attention back on herself.
You can't "overlook" the things she does, because as much as you try to stay out of it, she will find a way to suck you into the drama. My mother does not know what to do with herself without some kind of drama going on. If there isn't any drama going on, she'll create some. Literally everything she says or does is an attempt to get someone to pay some kind of attention to her, good or bad. There comes a point where you just can't deal with it anymore because it keeps you from living your own life.

We really do seem to have the same Mother. The reason I didn't speak with mine for about a year was because of her manipulation and control issues. She has always guilted me my whole life, tried to control me, manipulate my thoughts and feelings, etc. The straw that broke the camel's back was when she started accusing me of all sorts of horrific things because I wouldn't go visit my family when my violent addict brother was living there. There is a line in the sand with me, and you have to travel many miles to cross it. But when it's crossed, there is no going back. I hate to say this, but my brother is completely dead to me. My Mother's pretty darn close, too. Thankfully having 1,200+ miles between us has really redrawn our boundaries. She can't throw fits and start hurling accusations and threats for me to come visit or do her will, and she doesn't call very much either due to the time difference and my very clear message that the BS is O-V-E-R.
And boy do I know what you mean regarding people who have functioning families judging you for not being willing to tolerate your own family. I got that soooo much in the Carolinas. I was downright curt with people when they tried to go down that road with me. My relationship with my family is no one else's business. But Carolina people sure think EVERYTHING is their business, and they have a God given right to interject their values and judgment into your life whether you welcome it or not.

It's such a shame hearing all of these sad accounts of peoples family problems and the permanent scars that go along with them. Fortunately for me I have a wonderful Mom. Well my dad is a completely different story. Because I was different from my other 3 brothers he despised me growing up. he is a bad alcoholic and occasionally when my mom was gone at work he would wake me up when I was little and whip me in the face with his belt. One time it was so bad he slammed me repeatedly against the window ledge. My brother called the cops and he was jailed for 1 night. he used to beat my mom too and she would round us up and we would hide in the closet from him and pray for hours for him to pass out.he has tamed with age and I forgave him until he called me a fagot. Also I can relate to Louie b/c when my dad would lose at gambling at the track on the way home he would turn the car around on the freeway and tried to throw my mom out of car. My brothers and I would put a nail in our walkie talkie when would go out and play.. and if my dad would start attacking my mom we would create a diversion and taunt him so he would chase after us.
But we just move on and get stronger I believe. My life gets better everyday.

Whoa, can't believe I almost missed all of this. I only peer in on TMI occasionally, and when the convo turns towards bowel movements it always scares me off for a good long stretch;) Very interesting stories, Mark and Louie.
My cousin suffered from BPD until she passed away just over a year ago at 30, leaving her 3-year-old an orphan. It was terrible for all involved, but after hearing from my cousin's mom and sisters about the conditions she'd been raising her daughter in, I think her daughter is better off (now cared for by my aunt). Not saying that people with BPD aren't ever fit to be parents--I'm obviously in no position to make that call, and some can control it better than others--but my hat is off to anyone who's made it through that family situation.
My great-grandmother (still kicking at 97) is schizophrenic (we think, never diagnosed), and did such a number on my grandmother that the damage trickled down to my mom.
I completely agree with Mark's point about how presumptive it is for anyone to criticize someone for cutting off their family ("blood's thicker than water"). I've been talking about this a lot with my mom since her brother passed (her relationship to him and their parents has long been strained, to put it mildly).
Everyone wants to be able to draw love and support from their parents, but that isn't always an option. It's a horrible shame that not everyone can love their families, but it shouldn't be regarded as a failure. It's such a mistake for anyone to think they can see into another family--you just never know what's under the surface.

You know... in regards to the previous posts about "parental problems"... My mother was a wonderful mother when I was younger. Something happened when my parents divorced and either she changed, or I did.... or we all did... and I realized she's just a f*cked up human being like the rest of us. I had to pull her down off that pedestal I had her on. Sadly our relationship hasn't recovered and there's been a relative awkwardness for the past 12 years. At the end of it all though, I woke up one day and realized I had to stop blaming her for all of life's disappointments.

my friend Adam was trying to shag this girl named Debbie. She was super cool and we all dug her. Anyway... a few weeks went by and I saw Deb at school and I said, "Hey Adam, did you two ever uhhh...?" And Adam went pale. He goes "yeah man, she's nuts! She was at my place and I kid you not, she goes - F*CK ME NOW in this demonic scary man-voice." I then laughed for about 5 minutes and Adam goes ... "I almost asked her... Are you the GateKeeper?" I don't think I've had anyone say anything particularly memorable, but I keep a list of funny/cheesy porno lines. Some are only funny in context, tho. The "soup cooler" line was from a military-themed porn. The guy who uttered it was a sergeant or something. Then there was the Jesus thing, which was bizarre. The chaplain was screwing this soldier and at the end, after they'd had sex (the chaplain was a cute bearish type, but the soldier was not attractive - he'd clearly had pec implants  ), they're walking around outside, and the chaplain is delivering this spiel about accepting Jesus as your personal savior. I was like, "wtf?"
Oh, I did think of another line (from a different film):
"My Dad looks so hot ****ing you!" (said with much enthusiasm)

There's a similar thing w/ gay guys, but generally only when there's a noticeable age difference. I'll refer to an attractive middle-aged guy as a "daddy," but it's just a handy term to use - similar to DILF. And I wouldn't call him that in bed. It doesn't really creep me out, tho.

While I'm on the subject of Latino's I decided to share one of my fantasies with you all. I always wanted to b%&w 3 generations of Latinos at the same time. The Grandfather would be 50 years old, the father would be 34 and his son would be 19.

I don't really know what's going on with him. We somewhat ended things on Sunday because he's not fully comfortable with my age, but he admitted that he was only uncomfortable because he hadn't seen me in a month and he doesn't think about it at all when we're together. He then said that he wants to hang out and see how he feels about it but for the meantime, we're apparently not together.
I don't get it. He literally told me that he's only ending it because the time we've spent away from each other has let him overanalyze the situation, and yet he's also said that he wants to remain friends, hang out and see what happens from there. Uh, what.
I think I know what's going to happen. We'll hang out, things will feel just like they did before, we'll start dating again and then he'll freak out next time we go a few weeks without seeing one another. It sucks because I saw something really special in him.

I guess I'm just frustrated, that things never seem to go down the road the way I'd like them too(i.e.- I've had too many one night stands, that haven't led to a relationship. I hate one night stands).
M-bated? This afternoon!

it's been almost a year for good sex! imo, anything and everything since then, with another human, hasn't been anything to write home about. that sucks major ass! i cared much for a man i had to stop dealing with. so i haven't had an orgasm since then. it is what it is.

TMI question--
Is it too forward to just ask someone if they think enough time has passed for y'all to hook up again as part of your friendship? I wrote him this big letter about ~feelings~ and what not, but let's not kid. That ish was never going to be delivered. We're not compatible in a relationship sense at all; I just want the sex back.

Do it. The only one worrying about the emotional component is you, so he should happily jump back into bed with you.

my friend Adam was trying to shag this girl named Debbie. Are you the GateKeeper?" ROFL! So for the next year or so whenever we'd see Deb, I'd look at Adam and go "There is no Debbie, only Zuul!"

See, I can't bring myself to have a make-out date. I feel at my age (30) there is no territory between a little kissing and sex.... a few dates, and then bam: sex. I just can't see myself giving a guy a BJ, and then saying, "Okay! Well, that's it! Call me tomorrow!" :shurg: But I kind of miss the "anticipation" and intrigue of taking things in "steps." I hate dating sometimes.

To be honest, I have no problem getting laid, but I'm really not a one night stand kind of guy. And it just seems like that's mostly all I'm finding(with the exception of the grad student).
I like the thought of settling down.......but it seems like no one else is ready for that.

Honestly, it took me getting to the point where I actually lost all interest in dating to stumble upon someone who was worthy of my time. When I met my current bf, for the first time in my life I didn't want to date anyone... I was relishing being single for the first time EVER, and was enjoying living my life for me. Looking back, perhaps my desperation to find someone to settle down with was far more visible than I thought, and scared off potential suitors.
There is actually a Sharon Jones song which perfectly captures this situation.
Sharon Jones: Be Easy
some people say
you gotta fight for a love that's true
climb every mountain
see every trial and tribulation through
but i'm here to tell ya
oooh that's only half the lesson
now if you want a girl to come to you
you gotta leave a little room for guessing
Whoa you just be easy baby
that girl'll come a runnin to you
if you just be easy baby
ahh she'll be easy too
don't you know it's just a fool plays the card
runnin a girl down like shes a game in a school yard
now if she waits
you should turn, let her alone
she'll come to you
just as sure as you're born
be easy baby
that girl'll come a runnin to you
if you just be easy baby
ahh she'll be easy too
don't you know a woman, no,
don't wanna man down on his knees?
runnin her down like a mouse after cheese
you got to be mellow if you want her affection
you get too excited, and she's off in another direction
so be easy baby
that girl'll come a runnin to you
if you just be easy baby
ahh she'll be easy too
be easy baby
that girl'll come a runnin to you
if you just be easy baby
ahh she'll be easy too

Love this Louie. I usually scare people off in the opposite manner. I usually push people away or don't tell people how I feel to the point where it drove my ex batty. I always come off "strange" to people I believe. But I just assume get online and discuss my problems to complete strangers than to be perceived as weak or fukced up to someone I know on the outside

I teeter back and forth between both of these. After I had ended my first "real" relationship, I didn't know how to be single anymore and absolutely hated it. Sleeping alone isn't my favorite. But after I had gotten over that aspect and become more comfortable with being single (and ultimately myself) I had become preceived as "snobby," which wasn't at all the case. My friends and I took pride in how we looked when we'd go out, be loud, have a blast, pictues every 15 seconds. And this morphed into the three of us (along with whatever girls we brought along) being called "the plastics" (mean girls had recently come out). Which I suppose could be intimidating. But seriously, judging people for trying to be as perfect as possible is JUST as bad as judging for someone for being less than attractive. I just have the attitude now that when it happens, it happens... just as long as it happens before I'm 30...

Well, that's the one I've been seeing for 19 months now(off and on). Pretty passionate, but extremely lacking the verbal ability, to tell me anything. I get very frustrated, but I'm learning to deal with it. Me? I'm mushy, and I'll tell you exactly how I feel.

Believe me you can't win for losing in that regard. One can just as easily be perceived as snobby or prudish for being shy and insecure as someone who is happy and care free. But don't we all want to look our best? People can be mean spirited though b/c you may potentially have something in yourself that they lack.

Oh god, that's my OTHER problem. I don't like talking about my feelings... I was brought up in a family of all boys (except mom)... we didn't talk about feelings.

Well, it depends. Where I live(college town), almost nobody ever goes out dressed in suits and fancy dresses. So yeah, when we see the rare person dressed to the nines, we tend to make fun of them, and I personally, shy away from them. I mean, "they must think they're 'all that'". So I guess it depends on the situation.
I'm a jeans and T-shirt guy, and always will be. That doesn't mean they can't be sexy jeans, and a tight shirt. But again, I'd avoid someone dressed like they were going to the Royal Wedding, like the plague. That's.just.me.

But I mask my insecurities BY being loud I think. Maybe not so much anymore. I'm a lot different now than when I was 21/22. But I was super shy and insecure, but the other 2 "plastics"... lets call them Regina and Gretchen... basically "trained" me on how to be outgoing. As I look back, I was totally a project for them. My ex was very much a laid back small town kind of guy, and thats how I was brought up, so I easily fit into that situation. Regina and Gretchen had other plans. I was totally their Kady Herron. Months after they were done, I totally called them on it. They just laughed and were like, "but don't you love your life so much more now?" And I do, I'm not shy anymore, and my insecurities are mostly gone. It was the whole "fake it till you make it" thing, and it worked.
