The "War of The Worlds" version of "Gold and Braid" is on the Masters as well, which has Stevie describing Orson Welles broadcast and other babbling before the song starts.
I did not DL anything from See The World Go By yet (although Maureen did give me that CD and I lost it!), so I don't know if it's the same "Belle Fleur".
I'm going through lots more stuff I didn't realize I have. Just found a "Whole Lotta Trouble" I didn't know was there.

Was the phenomena that was Bella Donna so immense that they considered actually performing one of Stevie's VERY RECENT SOLO HITS at a sacred FM concert??!!?!!!! Or were they just playing it for fun? It's just for fun. Band rehearsals (this was a 1982 rehearsal) always include large amounts of screwing off, boredom, chit-chat, & running in & out of the hall for the sheer joy of forcing your band mates to wait for you.

Thanks again and again and again, Dark Angel!
Even though Maureen repeated herself a lot, each CD had a few GEMS that were ultra-rare and of incredible sound quality!!!
Thank you for archiving these rarities! (And maybe I find that "Sisters of The Moon" one day!).

This is all so overewhelming! I feel so left out since I don't know very much about all this Maureen stuff. I need to lock myself in my house for an entire week and do nothing but download this whole thread and listen and learn!

I'm still ripping and uploading what I have of these. I don't have Simply Stevie or Rarities Vol. 1, and right now I only have Enchanted Dreams and Enchanted Outtakes on cassette. I've yet to get around to transferring them.
Anyway, here's See The World Go By (http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=d1bb50397e6110d77432d3c9683f450a6b9c1dfd7c317c99e04f31aacf568dab).
Also, to nicksphan, I'm posting the Mirage Demos & Outtakes in the Rumours forum.
Is this "See the World Go By" all Fritz stuff?

It was only performed on the Unleashed tour, sadly. I really would have liked to have heard a live Tusk version of it.
The only live version of Storms from Unleashed I found has some chick talking really loudly over it! Ruins the whole damn song. I guess you can't tell people not to talk at an FM concert.

If you search old threads there are tons of mediafire links that are still current. Plus youtube has thousands of audible versions.

I have no idea why I'm doing this but I guess I'm at a point where I feel comfortable enough to tell you guys and now it's becoming more obvious so I feel the need to mention something about it. It doesn't have much to do with a demo or live request but I didn't want to start a whole new thread for it and announce it to the world so instead I'm hijacking one I started. Here it goes. I'm going to make it as brief and to the point as possible and I know it doesn't sound that serious but it is to me. I became a die-hard Stevie fan in 2002 and spent the next 4 years seeing shows, collecting demos, and educating myself about everything Stevie I could get my hands on. I learned and experienced a lot in relation to Stevie. Unfortunately in 2006 an event occurred which caused me to lose much of my memory from the years leading up to it. Not only did I lose many of my personal memories but I also lost a lot of the Stevie stuff which in a way hurts even more. The point of me telling you is this - while I've been a fan for a good part of this decade most of the knowledge I gained from 2002 on has been erased so I'm having to re-learn a lot of this stuff over. Of course I still remember some stuff but if you hear me say something and you're thinking "How could she not know this?" there is a reason (not that anyone knows everything but you know what I mean). Anyway thanks for reading.

Hey, don't worry, L! We're here to help you!
I lost a lot of my Stevie CDs in 2006, and so many great people here have been helping me rebuild by Stevie Collection. Not the same thing as losing memories, of course, but I'm glad so many nice and generous Stevie Fans are willing to help others.
Thanks for sharing your experience ~ we're all here together!

I'm sorry to hear about your memory loss :( and I don't know how it happened, nor do I mean to make light of it, but on the bright side, now you get to discover all kinds of amazing Stevie stuff twice! Speaking of discovering Stevie stuff, I'm still waiting on the "sweet darling" version of Dreams :)

Someone recently shared their entire collection of goods, and the HBO concert was included in that. I'm thinking it could have been golddustsongbird?
Edit: I just went back and looked, and Dreams is not included...

Now, you MUST listen to this most beautiful version of Beauty and the Beast from the Tusk outtakes, yes Tusk. It's the "blues jam" version.

The links for this on the Remixes Thread are dead:
"Seven Wonders" - Extended Remix; the original 1987 one, not some fan remix, please.
Also, Daniel Matsumoto made an edit of the dance version of "Seven Wonders" on one of his Spiral Note CDs. Does anyone have it to post?

Thank you, Dark Angel! :xoxo:. There are some very significant upgrades in there. However, if this is indeed very close to the source material, I can see why it was left off of Enchanted- the sound quality is "clear" but not-quite-ready-for-CD for the most part. Also, "Gypsy Beggar" is a bit of a rambling mess of a song, if I do say so myself (and I just did!). And now that I can hear a clear(er) version of "All Over U," it really doesn't hold up as anything more than a novelty. But I do love Mama for trying something different. Oh well... there is a reason why these things never got released!

Here are a couple requests in particular (if anyone has them in lossless form):
- Maybe Love Will Change Your Mind (outtake/alt. versions)
- Julia (any of the Bella Donna outtakes)
- Lady From The Mountain (I thought I had seen this was from a master reel)
- Dial The Number (OSOTM outtake)
- Rose Garden (Rock A Little outtake)
It's such a shame no master reels exist (as far as I know) for great tracks like I Call You Missing, Prettiest Girl In The World, Beautiful Ghost, Running Through The Garden (RAL demo), etc.
Also... I wonder if anyone has a couple songs I've been searching for forever which are lossless, good quality copies of:
- Rock A Little (the long 12'' mix)
- Mirror Mirror (the Street Angel b-side vocal version)
Thanks again to all who have taken the time to share...

Jeff, check out the Master Reel thread. There are lossless (and rare) versions of MLWCYM and Julia from the BD sessions. From what I recall, the masters of LFTM are very early and incomplete takes. There are definitely more versions of Julia and Dial the Number that I'll try to get up shortly.
Also, check out the two great versions of The Highwayman that were posted last night.

Jeff, I discovered that version of "The Nightmare" on the Reels last Autumn, never knowing I'd had it for about 6 years ~ I LOVE it!!!!
After some annoying delays, I'm (finally!) moving to my new place a week from Saturday, where I will have DSL, so uploading will be, well, "it's a breeze...". Right now, it's definitely a bitch. ;)
Nicksphan is posting Masters on his new thread, and I plan to join in once uploading is easier and doesn't F with my computer.
Per your requests:
Here are a couple requests in particular (if anyone has them in lossless form):
- Maybe Love Will Change Your Mind (outtake/alt. versions) - Many versions, all excellent!
- Julia (any of the Bella Donna outtakes) - I posted 2 on my "Julia" thread a little while back. I have 20 outtakes of "Julia" I will be HAPPY to post once I get DSL ~ my FAVOURITE SONG!!!!
- Lady From The Mountain (I thought I had seen this was from a master reel) - Yes, several versions. Didn't Jeff post one earlier in this thread?
- Dial The Number (OSOTM outtake) - Six versions.
- Rose Garden (Rock A Little outtake) - No lossless that I've heard, but I keep finding upgrades!
It's such a shame no master reels exist (as far as I know) for great tracks like I Call You Missing, Prettiest Girl In The World, Beautiful Ghost, Running Through The Garden (RAL demo), etc. Yes, but as I keep searching, I keep finding better quality versions. Not Master Level, but very good on some.
Also... I wonder if anyone has a couple songs I've been searching for forever which are lossless, good quality copies of:
- Rock A Little (the long 12'' mix) - If no one posts this, I will once I move.
- Mirror Mirror (the Street Angel b-side vocal version) - This is posted on the "Mirror, Mirror" thread if you need it now.

See, here's where my editing will come in useful! Several complete versions of "Lady From The Mountains" are on the Masters, but buried in "incomplete takes"/"false starts", etc. But they are in there! I have edited out six complete, full versions from the Masters. :)

I need to start learning a lot more about these demos and masters, etc. I'm way behind! Back in the day when I started collecting stuff on CD I was just starting to get into it and then I had to take my prolonged break. I'm in the process of downloading everything in this thread although I have some of it on CD. My goal is to organize everything in iTunes into folders and playlists. Sounds like a mission but hopefully I will eventually get to listen to everything after this big iTunes project! Do you guys think that is a good way to organize all your Stevie music on the computer?

Christopher, fingers crossed my DSL is hooked up in my new apartment April 24!
I will amend the sound status: there is hiss. However, Stevie's vocal is unbelievably CLEAR with NO warbling or feedback whatsoever. I wish I had uncovered this from Maureen's Mystery Box before Lindsay handed over "Chanel, Chanel" to her friend at the studio to upgrade. All this version needs is some hiss (not even horrible hiss) taken off, because the instruments and especiallyStevie's vocals are clearer than ANY I've ever heard.

"The Nightmare" ~
http://www.mediafire.com/?mwhjzjmzqfm
I love how this much longer version has more "Nightmaaaaaaarrrre" choruses strewn throughout, almost randomly! The initial vocal is the same as the released Rock A Little version. Then, at 3 minutes, a completely different vocal is heard ("So about the moon and her sisters...").
I've always loved "The Nightmare" since the first time I heard it, and this outtake is tied with the album as my favourite of the many, many versions. I especially love Stevie's different rambling vocals at the end as it fades.
Mike can you please re-post this link (it's not working) with any other Nightmare's you havel? I only have one demo of poor quality.

Drownded baby!
Were you able to get this downloaded? Have you ever heard the remix that was only on vinyl? I THINK it was called a remix - or maybe it was just called the 12'' version...or was it also the regular 45rpm single version as well?! Someone here will have to clarify.
It's a different vocal than the album version and is longer - I have "Rock A Little" the same way. It's much better in my opinion - even better than the cool alternate you were looking for an active link to. I got them on the same CD that I got a perfect "Mirror Mirror" on and it's a direct digital transfer from the vinyl. Awesome quality - I'd be happy to post it here lossless.
Can someone tell me what the official title was - anyone have a scan of the label or picture sleeve? Is it "remix", "12'' version", "extended version".......

KarmaContestant, was the "Vocal/Special Remix" on ALL singles of "The Nightmare" or was it a bonus added track on a 12'' only? What is up with all these alternate ROCK A LITTLE songs?! I was gonna start a thread asking about them. "Talk To Me" also has an alternate released version.

"The Nightmare" remix is only on the 12", not the 7". That's the album version.
"Rock A Little" was simply there on Side 2 on the UK 12" of "I Can't Wait" when it was released, no special labeling to denote it as anything different. I remember FREAKING OUT in January 1986 when I was leaving for class and listening to that "Rock A Little" for the first time and realizing it was totally different! AND that it was the PRINTED LYRICS from Rock A Little!!!! (Yes, I notice those things and obsess about them! :) )

Thank you very much for uploading these!! The RAL track is definitely a sonic upgrade, and the Nightmare sounds great (I had NOT heard this version and it ROCKS!) I did do a check of the spectrum and there does appear to be a drop off at just under 20 kHz, which would normally indicate a possible lossy source (but still good HQ).... but maybe this is a result of the method used to transfer the sound from the vinyl LP.. not sure about that, but thought I should pass on what I found.
It still sounds awesome though, and I REALLY appreciate the upload!!! :D

Wow.. that's fantastic!!! If I get a chance tomorrow, I'll try and fiddle with it (noise reduction and such) to see if I can get it to sound a little better.... but it'll be hard to improve on the clarity of the vocals for sure! Thank you, Mike, for posting this!
UPDATE...
Here is my first attempt at cleaning the file up a bit... it's still far from perfect, but it sounds a little fuller to my ears with a little less hiss (hopefully without losing too much of the crispness in the vocals):
http://www.multiupload.com/B6GUZDOGX8
Let me know what you think... I can always tinker with it some more!
"All The Beautiful Worlds"
http://www.mediafire.com/?jzodmzexmh2
Not one of the Masters, but the best sounding version I've ever heard. I literally screamed in a Stevie-gasm when I first heard this last September! After many years of far inferior quality sound, I remain thrilled to be able to listen to one as good as this. Maybe someone has better quality and will post it, but this sounds exquisite to my ears.
Remember, this was recorded here in Dallas in 1982, produced by Gordon Perry for The Wild Heart.
And this does sound great too... I downloaded another version of this not too long ago, in FLAC format, and they appear to be from the same source. Unfortunately, they both do appear to be lossy (when you do a spectrum analysis.. maybe from 128-160 bitrate range.. I'm guessing there by comparing to other lossy sources).... but you're absolutely right that you'd be hard-pressed to find a better sounding copy of this track! And I've always loved this song...
Thanks again for sharing!!

I didn't know if anyone liked them ~ thanks for responding, Jeff! I'm DLing the version you worked with now and will let you know my thoughts.
I've heard many attempts at "fixing" both "She Still Loves Him" and "All The Beautiful Worlds" over the years, and they either diminished the (warbly) vocals or were just louder. I was just amazed at the crispness of the vocals of these two. It's so cool you know about all these technical/digital things. I'm more in the Stevie spectrum when it comes to technology... ;)
Thank you Mike for posting "She Loves Him Still" - that is definitely the best quality version I have heard and I am supremely grateful for it. This has to be her most tender vocal ever - it just gets to me every time I hear it. Of course, I would love for her to one day record it properly but I don't know that she could ever match the original demo vocal - it truly is beautiful.
PS Jeff, I couldn't get your download to work so I'm afraid I can't comment on the work you did, but thanks for your efforts anyway!

Jeff, yes, Kenny G had a big hit with "Going Home", the instrumental of "Tragedy of One's Own Soul" and "Lily Girl". (I think it was released in 1990).
I remember being in the backroom of the Gap at NorthPark here in Dallas in 1996, and some sax music was playing on the Oasis, Dallas' "Smooth Jazz" radio station. Without realizing it, I started singing, "Ooh, and then something in the mail comes ~ and she goes a little bit into shock!"
It was a cool moment! I finally downloaded "Going Home" off of iTunes in 2005, and sometimes I'll play it and just sing along. I like "Lily Girl", but I think the majority of the lyrics on "Tragedy of One's Own Soul" are better.

That's it!! Thank you.... it must have been so long since I've heard the song, I had completely forgotten about it. My father used to listen to a smooth jazz station quite a bit (WNUA - Chicago) when I was small, and I'm sure they played it a lot back then.

Thank you Mike for posting "She Loves Him Still" - that is definitely the best quality version I have heard and I am supremely grateful for it. This has to be her most tender vocal ever - it just gets to me every time I hear it. Of course, I would love for her to one day record it properly but I don't know that she could ever much the original demo vocal - it truly is beautiful.
PS Jeff, I couldn't get your download to work so I'm afraid I can't comment on the work you did, but thanks for your efforts anyway!
That's alright... but if you're interested, here are a few mirrors (multiupload uploads to multiple mirrors, which is why I use it) and maybe one of these will work for you:

Thank you very much for uploading these!! The RAL track is definitely a sonic upgrade, and the Nightmare sounds great (I had NOT heard this version and it ROCKS!) I did do a check of the spectrum and there does appear to be a drop off at just under 20 kHz, which would normally indicate a possible lossy source (but still good HQ).... but maybe this is a result of the method used to transfer the sound from the vinyl LP.. not sure about that, but thought I should pass on what I found.
It still sounds awesome though, and I REALLY appreciate the upload!!! :D
Yeah, this is my favorite version of "The Nightmare" and of "Rock A Little". I'm glad you did that spectrum check - I was wondering what a vinyl transfer would show. These tracks come from a CDR called BLUE CRYSTAL MIRROR that was made by a guy who sold cds back in the 90s under the label "Spiral Note Productions". I emailed back and forth quite a bit with him and am very sure in his promise these were direct digital transfers from his vinyl. He was a stickler for the highest quality on his CDs and it really shows in the sound.
I don't know what method he used to transfer them, or what type of turntable or cartridge/stylus he had - I'm sure it would affect the frequencies captured. What program do you use to do all these checks - I'd love to play with it and check lots of CDs I have!?!? How does the "drop off just under 20 khz" compare to mp3s you have checked and other vinyl sourced audio files? Did both of them have the same level drop? How did "Mirror Mirror" test - it was from the same CD.
Thanks Jeff for all the technical talk - it's so fascinating to me! You can reply with a private message if you want - I hate to get off topic in these threads!

I checked through an old list of Maureen's stuff, and this isn't listed. I think this came out after she quit selling. Here's the track list I have for it.
The Other Mirage - Gypsy/If You Were My Love/Smile At You/Straight Back/
That's Alright/I've Been Loving You Too Long/EOTW/ Gypsy (early take)/
Gypsy (slow version)/Gypsy (short version)/
Gypsy (long version)/Straight Back (early take)/Straight Back (long version)/
That's Alright/That's Alright (long version)
I may need to dig this one out this week.

Thanks very much for the compliment.. lol! I'm so glad you like it!! Enhancing files can be a very subjective thing (equalizing in particular) from one's ears to another (just like mastering and re-mastering I suppose), so that's awesome it sounds good to you!
Do you have a decent lossless copy of "What Has Rock 'N Roll Ever Done To You?" I have a pretty good mp3 copy that I have tried to enhance before... but obviously a lossless one would be much better, due to the fact you have all the source information to work with (super high ends and way low ends).
It also depends on how the mix of the demo is... different mp3s of most of the demos circulating have different stereo images (Beautiful Ghost is an example that drives me nuts... love the song, but the stereo image is bizarre). So if you get a good demo with a strong centrally mixed vocal... those are the best to work with!

Here is my first attempt at cleaning the file up a bit... it's still far from perfect, but it sounds a little fuller to my ears with a little less hiss (hopefully without losing too much of the crispness in the vocals):

I have no lossless copies of "What Has Rock and Roll Ever Done For You?" or "Thousand Days". I've gotten some great upgrades lately. I made a file on my iTunes to organize them all.
Yes, I've gotten a fantastic "Beautiful Ghost", but I don't know what technical things you require so as not to duplicate the work you've already done to the song.
Rock A Little-era songs I have very, very good versions of, near or at the level of "She Still Loves Him", comprise of:
Rose Garden
Mirror, Mirror
Night Gallery
Ooh Baby
Prettiest Girl in The World
Rock A Bye Baby
I Sing For The Things
Something Exquisite
It's Not A Dream
Thousand Days
Whole Lotta Trouble
What Has Rock and Roll Ever Done For You?
No Spoken Word
Maybe these sound crappy to everyone else because they are not Masters, but they sound just wonderful to me! Especially after 16 years of infinitely poorer sound quality versions. I don't know what technical magic could be used, but I bet they could be tweaked to be even better, just like "She Still Loves Him" (even if I don't understand how it's done).
When uploading will be quicker for me, I plan to start a Rock A Little Upgrades thread.

That's a great idea.... I'll be happy to try and work with the songs. Most of the demos for those songs you mentioned that I downloaded were pretty poor in quality. Especially Prettiest Girl In The World.... this was the first semi-finished 80's Stevie demo I ever heard, and it's still one of my top favorites.
The Beautiful Ghost demo I have is the one I think posted earlier in this thread.... decent sounding, but if you have a better one, that would be great too!
Here is the result of one of my attempts at an "enhanced" Beautiful Ghost (please note the original source is lossy.. but this file is lossless since it had to be transferred to a WAV in order to be edited):
http://www.multiupload.com/X0GZ6UE3H7
I think I can do a little better.... I just have to dig a little deeper in my bag of tricks.. hehe. Like I said before, the stereo image is strange on this copy of the track, so it's hard to play with the mix in a way that can enhance the sound (particularly the vocals).
But thanks to everyone for their compliments on "She Loves Him Still".... I'm glad it made a difference!

Haha.... very true. I stand corrected.
I just meant a lossless file format. I don't re-encode it as an mp3, since that can degrade the quality even more... and sometimes some of the plug-ins/processors I use do add some audio information to frequencies above/below where the source had any.

"The Other Mirage" sounds awesome!! Thank you for that! I have had some of those demos before, but obviously they had been copied at least a few times over before they reached me, since the sound quality is not nearly as good. "If You Were My Love" is the clearest version of that recording I've heard yet...
"What Has RnR Ever..." would be great to start... Do you have any suggestions as far as demos that just need some cleaning up? Obviously if the sound is horrible to start with, there's not much you can do. Mike says he has a really good "Prettiest Girl...", but maybe you have a lossless of this as well?
"At The Fair" might be a good candidate to improve as well.... if you've got a lossless of that.
I know it's a pain to upload all the lossless files, so I'll stop there, lol! But I'll let you know if I can think of something else... or like I said, if there's one you think I might be able to improve upon, by all means let me know!

Lisa, thanks for looking! And finding!!!!! I'm DLing now!!! THANKS!
Jrpjr: "She Still Loves Him" was written in the Rock A Little era by Stevie about Joe Walsh. She even quotes it in the Enchanted booklet, so she obviously wrote it.
Jeff, a lot of these upgrades are from Maureen's Mystery Box that I found on CDs we had remastered in the studio when we did the Reels. I was so obsessed with the Masters that I didn't pay much attention to these. Until NOW!
Other upgrades are from the versions Lisa has been posting from Maureen's CDs. Thanks again, Lisa, for posting these, because there's a lot of hidden Stevie Gold in those CDs!
I'm listening to my best version of "Something Exquisite" and it's truly amazing! The first one I got in 1994 was just so awful sounding in sound quality. I could tell it was a great song of Stevie's, but that crappy sound... This one is great!
I don't wanna get people's hopes up too much. Maybe "incredible" for me is "****ty" to everyone else. But I would put this "Something Exquisite" on the same level as "She Still Loves Him", with even less hiss.

Ok I must be on the ignorant train this morning but what's lossless?
Think of it like this:
When you buy a CD in the store, the data is recorded at 1440 kbps. If you rip the CD to your computer as a WAV file, the data is preserved in it's original quality of 1440 kbps - this type of copying is referred to as lossless, because none of the little bits of data are lost.
If you rip that CD to your computer as MP3 files, the data that was 1440 kbps gets squashed down to somewhere between 64 and 320 kbps, which is a considerable loss of data. The loss is usually from the low and high ends of the sound spectrum. The difference is not usually detectable to the ear unless you have a high end stereo system.
However, over time as people trade those MP3 tracks back and forth, they get burned to CD and ripped as MP3s over and over, and eventually the sound quality degrades considerably to very noticable levels due to the constant loss of data.
It's like when you buy a nice deep black shirt, and each time you wash it you lose a little bit of the bold black coloring, until finally what you have is a dull shirt in a rather ugly shade of grey.
You can avoid the loss of data when copying tracks from CD by keeping them in a format that does not compress, like WAV or FLAC.
Since most of the demos in circulation originated from analog tapes, it's likely that somewhere there is a lossless copy of each. The sound quality may be bad since it was copied from cassettes that were copied many times over, but it's still lossless as long as it was never converted to MP3.
Pretty much.

MP3's burned to CDs do not need to be "re-ripped" if the MP3 file is not converted back to WAV when burned to the CD. Only an idiot would do that. I would hope that traders have better common sense than to do that.

You would probably be able to only fit one or two WAV files on a cd. They take up a lot of space. So, no I doubt that.

Agreed, but if you don't know any better... I've been looking at my master reels for instance, and some of them are truly lossless, while others are MP3 sourced because they were ripped as MP3s and burned to CD again.
Fortunately I'm not an audiophile so I'm not losing sleep over it, though I see how others might lay awake at night fretting over it, because I do the same thing - just not over music.

So who would like to volunteer to compose a list of lossless master demo reels we have here so far, the ultimate goal being for all of us who want them to have the best quality demos out there without going through 10 versions of every song to figure it out (and yes I know some of you love having every version!)? I'll be your bff ;).
P.S.- to you experts out there is this a lame idea??

I thought I'd take a crack at Mike's fantastic upload of "All The Beautiful Worlds"... it's just a shame the sound was compressed like it is (a look at the spectrum graph probably puts the source at around a 128-160 bitrate mp3 since there is an abrupt drop off just under 15 kHz)... but it's still the best around that I've heard!
There wasn't really much that I could do here to improve the sound from how good it already is, so the differences will be subtle. I tried to brighten up the sound a bit (particularly the center vocals), without it sounding tinny or tiring to the ears. I used a processor that reshapes the envelope of the audio signal (controlling the attack & sustain of drum beats, for example), so that they might come through a little more noticeably (I was aiming mostly to focus on Bobbye Hall's percussion). The levels were also somewhat even... the first minute-and-a-half of the file was louder than the latter section (particularly the first few bars, where you hear just the drums and keyboards).
If you do a spectrum analysis of the track I'm uploading here, you'll notice it will probably look lossless. This is just due to the processors I use... they add high end frequency information that wasn't there in the first place. (i.e. the reverb I used on the center vocals to add a little warmth to the sound adds high frequency information)
So without further ado.. I present a slightly enhanced version of "All The Beautiful Worlds":

I've finished saving .bin files of all of my masters, and have started the process of checking each one using AudioChecker. It's very simple, and the results are easy to interpret. It will take a day or so to fit it in my free time, but after I'm done, I'll post a list of what I have that I know is lossless versus lossy.

It will take a day or so to fit it in my free time, but after I'm done, I'll post a list of what I have that I know is lossless versus lossy.
Awesome, thanks Karma! I just like being organized and I have so many versions of so many songs it's getting confusing. This is my first time doing a major mp3/wma download project on a computer and transferring everything into folders in iTunes. My ultimate goal is to have all my Stevie music (best quality possible) organized in my iPod so I can take it anywhere and listen in my car.

Sounds like an awesome project. Then, we should probably add all the other demos to it somehow and try to find the greatest quality for each amongst ourselves and make sure we all have THAT one. Then, if someone comes along with a better copy, any of us could compare and if it is indeed better - upgrade.
A big project that will be ongoing, but once started, should not be too hard to accomplish over time. And would be a great asset to the Stevie community.

Well after a couple days of playing around with "What Has Rock and Roll Ever Done For You?", I have decided to post two different attempts at polishing it up. I probably created about 5 different "enhanced" versions, but most I was unhappy with (one of which was about an hour of work I accidentally lost from a crash in my program... GRR!.. LOL!).
The first version I'm posting is essentially just a boosted and slightly re-equalized version... there is just a little noise reduction used for the intro (but the rest of the track is free from any):
http://www.multiupload.com/K7IPJH3PUB
or
http://hotfile.com/dl/39289393/feac909/WHRAREDFY-enhanced.wav.html
The second version was one that has been through tons of different processors and equalizations... I kept feeling like I was getting close to something pretty good, but that it needed some more tweaking. This version was also one where I was trying to create more of a standard stereo image (so it sounded mixed the way most commercial tracks would be). Most notably, the vocals are more centered here:
http://www.multiupload.com/0G7BPV6J70
or
http://hotfile.com/dl/39290381/369dead/WHRAREDFY-enhanced_version_2.wav.html
If the second version is too different, or changes the feel of the track too much from what you're used to, I recommend sticking with the first version I posted above. Either way, I hope that it's at least somewhat an improvement over the original!
I look forward to hearing everyone's thoughts on these from those who have listened to both... and also if they have any additional recommendations.
Enjoy! :)

Is it possible to make the "stay away" demo more audible???
Just thought I'd ask. I am very well adapted to the bad sounding demos, however, Stay Away actually seems like it could be clear....it's just low volumed or something....any fixies on that perhaps?

Here is my first attempt... please note the source is a 160 bitrate mp3. I first compressed the original a lot, so that the piano strokes wouldn't be much louder than the vocals... I was hoping this would make your ears pay more attention to the vocals. I then off-centered the original track's left and right channels, overlaying those onto the compressed and boosted audio, which created a false stereo image. I added a little reverb and used some noise reduction as well:

Hope this sounds a little better to you anyways! :)

She recorded it as part of the early TISL sessions (at least that's how I have it filed on my computer...), possibly around 1996? Anyone else have a better time estimate?

Of course I have this - I just thought it was earlier than 1996 but I guess I'm wrong. I thought you guys meant there was something from the 2000-2001 period that I didn't know about that is better than what we have. Wooo, that scared me. I'm sure some of you know this but I'm having a class of students in recording school work on improving Chanel Chanel for a class project. Check my "Pick a Song to Upgrade" thread for details...

Totally off topic but you guys know I love hijacking my own threads . So the question is - why did Stevie change the keys in Stand Back live? When she was first doing it (US Festival, TWH, etc) she sang it in a pitch much closer to the album but for sometime now she sings it different (Stand back, stand back). I do not think it's because she can't hit those notes b/c they are not higher notes, just different. Any feedback would be helpful. And I like it the original way!
P.S. Did you know "standing in it" was referring to quick sand?

Are you referring to the minor change she made to the melody in the chorus on the live version? "Stand Back" has always been in the same key, to my knowledge, but she definitely changed the chorus melody for live performances way back when and it's been that way ever since.
It's hard to explain concisely (an online sheet music notation tool would be handy) but on the studio version the word "Stand" in the chorus is an F#, then the word "back" begins with an E and bends down to D. It's then repeated using the same melody, and the same melody is again used for "It's alright, it's alright". On the live version, the words "Stand back, stand" are an E and the last "back" is a D.
It's not vastly different, but the live version has a slightly less dynamic melody on the chorus, making it sound a bit more monotonous, IMO. I'm not sure why she changed it, because it's only a half-step difference and within her range. Maybe it was just a bit easier to sing it with the simpler melody, and we know that Stevie ALWAYS goes for "simpler" in her live performances.
It's sort of like how the "taken by the wind" and "will you ever win" lines from the original studio "Rhiannon" got replaced with "taken by the sky" and "would you even try" early on and those lines vanished forever from the live versions. I doubt Stevie even remembers they were there at all.

Thank you so much for this expaination! I do not know anything about music technically so I wasn't even able to articulate what I was referring to correctly but you got it - it's the "stand back, stand back and "it's alright it's all right. Now I understand and she has been doing it like that live forever. You are also correct in that the live version is more monotonous but the questions remains, why? I know it may not seem like a big deal to most people and a minor thing but for some reason it really affects me. I just like it so much better the original way. I'll have to ask her lol.

I guess Gainesville and Gatorville are the same thing...I've never heard it called Gatorville though. Weird. Anyways, we're talking about the same concert I'm fairly sure. I know it's the concert from this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eUIVJ6eb8tk and I think she only did 1 show in FL with Tom Petty, so this must be it!
Here it is -
Unfortunately the audio quality is not as good as it is in the video. I'm pretty sure I have a video of this concert but I don't think it's the same quality as the youtube one, or else I would just rip from the video. Alas, this will have to do:

Does anyone have from the Cayuga Fairgrounds, 'Beauty and the Beast" from The Rock A Little tour? Westwood One had broadcasted it on the radio and I lost the taping of the show.

"Julia" ~ I like this shorter, more somber version. Stevie's vocal is somewhat dim, but the music is clear, especially Roy's piano. And, of course, the "She does two things..." line instead of "She would suffer for the love..." I don't know why, I just like it better.

Yeah, I got chills the first time I heard it! Maureen gave this version to me on cassette in 1998. The sound was not that good, although Stevie's performance is awesome! So, when we had the Master Reels baked and tranferred back in 2001-2005, we would have extra studio time we had already paid for, so lady who handled all of this had many of the things from Maureen's Mystery Box upgraded in the studio as well.
I did not upload the upgraded CDs (several of them!) from Maureen's Mystery Box to my computer until a few months ago. Well, I was shocked to re-discover this very different "Joan of Arc"!

From what I remember, Maureen originally traded her newfound Stevie rarities on cassette (she just gave me copies for some reason). Many of these tapes she just labeled "Mystery Box", and they were songs from throughout Stevie's career of wildly varying sound quality. The name "Mystery Box" implied she received a bunch of different tapes from her source(s ~ she had many, not just the one guy David named) in a literal box.
Soon after, she began selling some other stuff on CD, many of which Lisa and others have posted here. These were the Mirage/Tango outtakes, The Early Years, China Doll, etc, and most of these kinda/sorta fit into a given era. Sorta kinda.
However, many of the "Mystery Box" songs never made it onto any of Maureen's CDs that she sold and were forgotten by many. So, when we were having the Master Reels baked and mastered and transfered to CDs, the fabulous woman who was doing all of this for us said that we would have extra time on the many studio sessions we paid for, and it would be a shame to let that time/money go to waste. We all sent in our (obviously not "lossless") best copies of Stevie's demos/outtakes to be upgraded in the studio. Many of these came from what Maureen had herself labeled the "Mystery Box".
When our studio lady sent us our CDs, she labeled the non-Master Reels ones that were specifically made from Maureen's tapes as Maureen's Mystery Box, and that name stuck, it seems.

I don't mean to speak for Mike, but the files are actually WAV files (or waveform files)... the reason they are much bigger is that these are lossless audio files (essentially raw, uncompressed audio data). Here's some more info. if you're curious:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WAV
The files have to be that big because of the information they contain. It's nice to have it in this format, because it can be compressed to mp3 (of any bitrate), or converted into any audio format desired. And for those of us that don't want any information lost, it's nice to have the complete audio data from the original source!
Hope that helps to explain... :)

Sure... there are all different kinds of mp3 encoders. Some are standalone programs and some are plug-ins for other programs. Windows Media Player should have one built in... iTunes does as well. But if you want a decent one on its own, you can try:
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Lame_Encoder.htm
This comes in handy for different formats as well... For example, I use it to compress & convert FLAC & APE lossless files:

Thanks for this, can you share the complete track list for "Maureen's Mystery Box", cheers :o
Well, Neil, I just took out my Book of Miracles (the special name I gave to my HUGE CD carrier of Stevie's unreleased music ~ it really is shaped like big black book!)...
And there are TWENTY-THREE CDs from Maureen's Mystery Box!
And a few more that aren't labeled as such, but I suspect they may be.
So, this will take forever to list, so I'll try to do a little at a time when time is free. Remember, most are these are from Maureen's sources and all were on cassette originally. Some Mystery Box collections are just demos/outtakes collection that I think Maureen just put the "Mystery Box" label on since they are nothing actually rare. So, I will concentrate on first posting the ones with truly rare material and denote anything I found special.
BTW, my DSL was short-lived (long bad story with good ending), so I'm not able to post anything right now, but will try to get out some of actual rare items.
Again, I note, most of these are from inside sources Maureen had in the Late 1990s. First CD:
Mystery Box: Fleetwood Mac ~ Rough Mixes 1978
1. Sisters of The Moon #1 instrumental
2. Over and Over #1 instrumental
3. That's Enough For Me #1 instrumental
4. Honey Hi #1 instrumental
5. Brown Eyes #1 instrumental
6. Beautiful Child
7. I Know I'm Not Wrong #2
8. That's All For Everyone #2
9. Sisters of The Moon ~ TOTALLY DIFFERENT outtake!!! WILD!!! NOT one of the usuals! Sound is low, though...
10. Walk A Thin Line #1
11. That's Enough For Me #3
12. Over and Over #3
13. What Makes You Think You're The One
14. The Dealer
January 15, 1979:
15. I Know I'm Not Wrong
Tusk Sessions #2:
16. I Know I'm Not Wrong
17. I Know I'm Not Wrong
18. I Know I'm Not Wrong
Mike's Note: I have no idea what the non-Stevie songs are like ~ never even listened to them. I believe these are all posted for downloading in the Rumours forum here ("Demos/Live/Etc."). This "Sisters of The Moon" is SO different and wicked!!! The sound is not good, though.
Mystery Box: Rock A Little
1. Mirror, Mirror #1
2. Mirror, Mirror #2
3. Mirror, Mirror #3
4. No Spoken Word (Album music but different vocal)
5. Thousand Days (The 7-minute demo)
6. Mirror, Mirror #4 ("Haunted in your mirror!")
7. It's Not A Dream (Amazing!)
8. The Nightmare (Another completely different vocal, not like the well-known ones, keeps repeating "Drowning in the sea...")
9. The Nightmare (Longer alternate with some weirder synths on it! Completely different vocals!!)
10. Imperial Hotel (Slightly longer)
11. I Can't Wait (Not quite the single remixes. LOTS of echoing backing vocals!
12. She Still Loves Him (Well-known version)
13. Rock A Little (Long version, poor sound)
14. Sister Honey (Cuts)
15. She Still Loves Him (Alternate more ragged vocal!)
16. She Still Loves Him (Another alternate!)
17. Talk To Me (5:25 outtake ~ totally different! Horrible sound!)
18. Tied Up (In Promises) instrumental
Mike's Note: The songs from this Maureen's Mystery Box are heartbreaking because some are SO RARE, but I think everyone ignores them because of the sound quality. I mean, both of "The Nightmare"s are NOT the 4 or 5 versions we all know. The sound on "It's Not A Dream" and all 4 of "Mirror, Mirror" are very, very good, though!

Wow! Thanks for the list, Mike. At some point, when you're able to upload, I'll be happy to see what I can do to improve sound on certain tracks... if the Sisters of the Moon you mentioned is just really low in volume level, that's an easy fix... might need a little light noise reduction after being boosted.
Did you get to check out a couple other enhanced tracks yet? I posted them a couple pages back in case you missed them.

Thank you for posting this!
Well, I took a shot at enhancing the quality of the Track 9 "Sister Of The Moon" demo. I think the results are decent... the treble was severely muffled, so I boosted it big-time. I used some noise reduction, but left enough hiss so it didn't lose the crispness gained by boosting the treble. I used compression on the audio some to boost the overall volume and did a little re-equalization. If you do a spectrum analysis, you'll see a noticeable drop in the upper range from about 14 kHz to 16 kHz... this is an anomaly from the noise reduction used. I may try and redo the track at some point because of this unwanted anomaly... but still, I think you can hear the track a little more clearly now.
Let me know what you guys think and if you have any suggestions....

18. Tied Up (In Promises) instrumental
This is interesting.... is Tied Up really a demo from the Rock A Little era? Now that I think of it, the vocals and production do sort of sound like that period. I just assumed it was probably a Wild Heart demo due to the fact Olivia Newton-John recorded it in 1982. I thought perhaps it was offered to Stevie first, but then Olivia ended up recorded it since it was co-written with long-time Olivia songwriter/producer John Farrar and jazz guitarist Lee Ritenour. But Stevie must have wanted to cover the track instead.. or someone told her that she should. Does anyone have any more info. about Stevie's recording of "Tied Up"?
I just looked up about Lee Ritenour and didn't realize before that he also recorded the song himself for his 1982 album Rit/2. So I wonder whose version came first.. Olivia's or Lee's? After hearing a clip of Lee's version (and Eric Tagg's vocals), I wonder if this is the primary one Stevie listened to before recording hers.

I've never even questioned that "Tied Up (In Promises)" was from anything other than Rock A Little based on the vocals alone. Factor in the music, which sounds completely different than anything on The Wild Heart, and it just reeks of 1984-1985. To me, of course.
I just assumed that, since "Tied Up (In Promises)" just did not live up to the success of "Heart Attack" as the second single from Olivia's Greatest Hits Volume 2 (should have performed it on the tour, Liv!), that Stevie/her handlers felt the song was fair game. Maybe Stevie just loved it and wanted to record it.
Jeff, have you fiddled with either of the two vocal versions? The 3:59 one is pretty spectacular sound that would just shimmer in your hands! The 4:54 one has hiss and is dimmer, but it's almost a minute longer, and Stevie's vocals end up even wilder! And on the instrumental part, she just goes ahead and sings another verse ~ SO Stevie! This one is not as bad as that "Sisters of The Moon" demo by any means, but nowhere near as clear as the other one.
BTW, I love how Stevie changes "Here's an opportunity" line to "Here's your pocket full of dreams!" in her version. Where's that "Extra words by S. Nicks" credit? ;)

Max, I bumped the Remixes thread for you in hopes the "Rooms on Fire" and "Long Way To Go" remixes you requested are on there.

A very different demo of "Ooh My Love" (sounds pretty completed but my copy is poor).
Not like any of the Masters, I think many of us just had this as a demo. There's this cool shuddering drum machine in parts of it. Stevie's vocals are completely different. She sings "Yes, it's still a strain on her..." many times, and parts of the song are structured differently.
I just found my copy in Maureen's Mystery Box, and the sound is not very good, but I LOVE this version!

Have The Nightmare piano demos been posted yet? I just listened to them from a facebook link and I'm in love! Can someone please post if they haven't already?
Also, have you guys heard the Not Make Believe demo from TISL sessions? I just love that song all around, always have. It should have been one of the primary tracks on SYW as opposed to a bonus track. It has such an upbeat tone and really embodies the sound of Fleetwood Mac. I can post the demo if anyone cares to listen. Do you guys like this song?
Edit: the demo version kinda sucks. It's boring and she's so monotone. I'd stick to the album version.

Edit: the demo version kinda sucks. It's boring and she's so monotone. I'd stick to the album version.
Yes yes yes yes! I adore that song! Especially after "it's not make believe now" then you hear a bass line, guitar lick, and drum riff! I practically live for it!
I've had people tell me they don't like the song cause it's too "choppy" but i disagree

Nicks" credit? ;)
No I haven't messed with "Tied Up" yet.. lol! The only reason being that the version I have on CD is the 3:59 length track (I haven't tested to see if lossless) and it has HORRIBLE sound quality... I do have a copy of it as an mp3 which has better sound, but it's only a 128 bitrate file, so it's not worth really messing with. And that's the only version I've ever heard... I didn't know there was another (or more). And yes, singing over instrumental sections IS so Stevie.. haha!
It had been so long since I've listened to the demo that now after listening again, I agree, it's hard to imagine this to be anything other than the 1984-1985 sessions. Back when I heard the demo for the first time (probably 10-12 years ago), I had Olivia's Greatest Hits vol. 2 on CD already and was familiar with the song... what a surprise to hear Stevie's recording! I just remember thinking it reminded me a bit of a Pointer Sisters-style to the music (probably the repetitive synth note that starts with "here's an opportunity"). I always liked this track, both Olivia's version and Stevie's. Lee's version is nice too... Eric Tagg sings lead and it features John Farrar's backing vocals (just like on Olivia's).
Is the "pocket full of dreams" in the longer version... all I hear for that line in the shorter version is "here's an opportunity" or "here's your opportunity".

Yes, that's the longer one.
I'm going to try to upload the shorter, better sounding version sometime soon. I think it sounds terrific. Some slight warbling, but nowhere near other versions I've heard. Mediafire is not opening up for me right now.

Yes, the sound is MUCH better than the one I have on CD.. thank you! I believe this is the same source as the one I had as the low bitrate mp3.
I worked on trying to enhance this in a couple of different ways... I feel pretty ambivalent about whether or not it's much of an improvement though. It does sound fuller to me, and not quite as harsh (or warbly as you mentioned) in some areas. Take a listen and let me know what you think...

Jeff, on my way to work, so I'm gonna upload the longer "Tied Up (In Promises)" to mediafire as I leave. When I get home, I'll post it and then download your work on the shorter one and let you know. Also gonna DL that "enhanced" "Real Tears" 'cause I wanna know how that sounds!
I meant to specifically say I can hear Stevie better on the enhanced "Stay Away" ~ great job! And I can't decide which of your 3 re-workings of "What Has Rock and Roll Ever Done For You?" I like best, since they are ALL so great!

Not that anyone cares but I received my "Stevie drive" yesterday but am waiting to start transferring stuff b/c I'm sorry to say I need someone to show me how. The point is I can't wait to start downloading all this stuff and the stuff from the master's thread.
On another note, The Tower demo came on randomly on my iPod today and I was reminded how much I adore it.

Since you guys are AWESOME at answering requests, I was just wondering: Does anyone have a good quality version of the Extended/single version of Gypsy? The one with the longer outro and the added: "I can't find you."
Thanks in advance!

"Gypsy" extended
Max, this is it from The Other Mirage that Lisa posted a few weeks ago from Maureen's CDs. If the quality isn't as good as on The Chain, I'm sure someone will upload it.
However, I'm still hoping someone posts the audio of the video version of "Gypsy" as well! ;)
