I'm so glad she's back. I'm sorry, I had feelings for Bowie, but really none for Glenn Frey, so when I heard the news about him, all I thought of was Fleetwood Mac and how grateful I was that we got another tour with Christine (and how I wish we had an album). I enjoyed the quartet we had from SYW on. I loved those four. But this is where the band needs to be right now.

Five and out.

Michele

It's so funny how we all differ. Even though FM has always been the soundtrack to my life, Glenn's death REALLY threw me for a turn today.

To be honest, I always thought he was kind of a jerk, but he was the mastermind of The Eagles. He WAS the Lindsey Buckingham of The Eagles.

I've spent the past hour listening to the Hell Freezes Over DVD. Not watching it, just staring in an opposite corner, at the wall.

Bowie's death didn't affect me much, nor any of the others, personally. I mean, I felt for them, and their family and fans, but it didn't hit home.

Glenn's passing today, made me realize what's coming. For all of them. And eventually, for all of us. I felt like a part of my childhood died today.

Sorry to sound so sad.

i was reading this, and actually all kinds of social media discussing similar since Bowie's death. i've been on Bowie-binge since.... well, since the 8th when Blackstar first came out, tbh. when i saw his name in the news the morning of 11th, at first i thought it was something about the album and i must be reading it wrong, it just can't be.

like you Homer, i have almost exact same feelings (parts i bolded) about Bowie passing as you have about Frey. i grew up with him and his music, his changes and various phases, i waited for his movies, records, and videos to come out. i loved some and just couldn't get into his other phases (Tin Machine? just no). i thought at the time he kinda sold out and went for commercial with Let's Dance which was everywhere in the early 80s, however great those songs are. i saw him in concert multiple times and tours, traveled to different countries for it. i remember how cool it sounded when he and Iman got together, and then had a daughter later in life. he kinda fell off my radar mid90s-2000s and i've enjoyed catching up on what he's been up to during those years.

Bowie being there is woven into the fabric of my life and especially my youth. kinda like FM and Eagles are for many on this board.

Bowie was incredibly prolific when you count his output - 27 studio albums all together. some people list parts of his output they don't like, but just look at his "best of" albums or certain tour setlists to see how many incredible and omnipresent hits he had over the decades. he was not afraid to keep evolving and keep putting out new stuff, and some it one can like, other phases maybe not, depending on your tastes. he came back to it in the last few years, starting with 2013 studio album The Next Day (which went to #2 on Billboard 200, and used impressively well designed social media advertising, i thought), after almost a decade of being mostly out of public eye with health problems after his on-stage heart attack which cut short his 2003/04 world tour after 100+ dates. his exit with the play Lazarus and his last album, still relevant, instead of being just a legendary nostalgia act he could have been instead, has been incredible and in line with all he's done throughout his life.

I still can't believe Christine came back. I feel that she gave this band a well needed breath of fresh air. They were so stale IMO and that EP was so uninspired. Hopefully Christine's influence will translate to the 3 writers putting together another quality album.

we will see... Time is of the essence.

I agree with both of you.The band was missing something without Christine's share in the band.

I do love the Eagles music and its members solo work but its none of my business what they did behind the scenes with others.

Agreed. rockers die in their late 60s early 70s every couple weeks and it really doesn't bother me (other then the obvious way one would be bothered at ANYONE dying at anytime) or make me fear for my favorite band, but it's much more tough psychologically to lose an eagle, since it is as Michele said the "sister" band. Plus don Henley and joe Walsh both have HUGE Stevie connections, it's hard not to be alarmed.

As I type that I realize how irrational it is tho, but none of us are rational tho!

Yeah, Don Felder was just the first "rock" guitar player they added(trying to get away from the early 70's country rock sound they had). He is a great player, and took them there. They finally fired him all over him owning shares of the Eagles "brand", which Joe or Tim never owned. He kept asking questions about not receiving his 1/3 of the profits(since only Don, Glenn, and Don Felder owned the BRAND - Bernie and Randy had left the band, and gave up their shares - Joe and Tim came on after it was too big, and weren't offered "ownership"). Don and Glenn(RIP) were tired of him getting that share(completely understandable, IMO, even though I'm a BIG DF fan -yet Don and Glenn were the stars, not Felder), and yet he kept nosing around with attorneys, and they found a way to fire him.

See, that's total bs on their part.

They made a business deal. He was legally fair and square an owner of a share of the band. Tough crap they didn't like it. Tough crap they made up some arbitrary rule after the fact that "oh we want everyone to play AND sing to be a real member of the band". If FM did that John and Mick would be out. WTF. Plus Felder wrote the music and the signature riff to Life in the Fast Lane. It's not like he didn't contribute. They were just greedy and thought they could bully him out of his share so they could have it, and run the show by themselves. He was legally entitled to have his share, and he had the nerve to stand by that. So they were buttholes about it and tried to tie him up in legal battles and fees so any profits he'd get he'd end up giving to the lawyers. Skeevy douchey behavior, but, honestly, that's the Eagles.

As for someone's comparison that Glenn was the Lindsey of the Eagles, maybe musically so but Lindsey would not be that douchey over money. Just think, by their logic he could have said, "we can't have anyone in FM who doesn't play an instrument" and kicked Stevie out.

Makes me sooo glad that FM doesn't work that way. Not that FM doesn't have power struggles, but power in FM tends to be founded on contribution to the band's success/sales. Though Stevie and Lindsey were indeed brought in on salaries (like $200/week each or something) at first, once the first album was a success they were equal members not hired hands. BonJovi runs his band as hired hands, so does Tom Petty with the Heartbreakers, saying not everyone can or should have an equal say. FM doesn't work that way, and a lot of the credit for that goes to Mick, and John, for not being twits.

End of soap box. :D

Edited to add: None of this is directed at Homer of course or meant to diminish your sense of loss for someone who's music meant so much to you. Band politics are just ugly and lots of money often brings out other sides of folks.

Well, to be fair, I recall it was Lindsey (according to Stevie) that didn't think Christine should be on Say You Will if she wasn't going to tour. :p

I have NO IDEA what the FM split is after Chris returned, but I can guarantee you that it's not 5 x 20%. I'm only saying that Stevie's lawyers are exactly like The Eagles. It's a BUSINESS, and they're commandeering the largest percentage that they can, for their client.

Before Chris returned, I've read multiple times, that it was
Stevie - 40%
Lindsey - 30%
Mick - 15%
John - 15%

I wouldn't even want to guess what the split is now, but I'd wager that somehow SN has a higher cut than LB or CM, with JM and MF with 10-12.5%.

If that is the case, I wonder what the point of Tom Petty having a solo album was all about?

I can see Genesis because Phil's music was so different. But Tom Petty sounds the same to me every time.

So, now Glenn dies in their sister band; he was only 67.

Yeah, we should have had that album last year. Time waits for no one. Michele

The unfortunate thing is, this still won't change Stevie's mind, either. She will continue to drag her feet and postpone. The warning shot across the bow for FM came when their very own (past) members started dying- ala the Bobs (Brunning and Welch), as well as long-time allies such as Judy Wong and Herbert Worthington. Then John was diagnosed with colon cancer. Still no movement from Stevie. Christine returned against all odds, the one condition Stevie said which would make her record with the band again. Nada. "If you don't love me now, you will never love me again." :distress:

Oh I TOTALLY agree with you about the money.

I guess the point I was making is that the power has been fairly fluid within FM over the years. The power has shifted around a bit and who has influence/control over things is dynamic, whereas in the Eagles they wanted it fixed and forever. When S & L joined, Mick had the power. Mick called the shots-- I'm taking the band to Sausalito to record, whatever whatever. Then the hits started happening and both Stevie's and Lindsey's "power" over things grew. Lindsey exerted his will on things via producing and Stevie through her ability to sell records/tickets/and draw media attention. By Tusk, Mick was no longer the center of control, Lindsey threatens to leave and Tusk is made, and though Stevie had a lot of power she wasn't in position to challenge him as much yet because as arranger/producer he really determined the sound of the records. Then she went solo, became an even bigger star, got her high-powered management team together and really they began making demands on her behalf and calling many more shots. We still see the standoff between her and Lindsey today (the DR documentary captured a lot of that well. In the old days he would have said she needed to change her lyrics and she would have.). Fierce battles over single vs double album. Etc.

But I don't think for a second that if John for instance really balked at something that it wouldn't cause the others to stop and think -- they wouldn't just steamroll over him. Or Christine for that matter. Splitting the money is one thing, but "owning" the band or some folks being in charge and others just being hired hands isn't the way it is. (Or maybe it is and they just bs us in their media interviews).

I think it was Mick who said in recent years in comparing FM to bands like the Eagles, that FM still sees themselves as a (dysfunctional) family, not just a business entity. They have ongoing personal interactions outside the band. Glenn and Don not so much. Lindsey commented also that unlike the Eagles, who know what they will do next and why, FM is more of a mess because everyone has their own agendas, and that because no one is defined as the leader it makes a bit of a chaotic mess and hard to get on track. (New album, anyone?)

I don't believe (maybe someone else knows different) that anyone in FM has the power to fire anyone else. Hence the pouting and posturing and building alliances that seems to go on to sway majority opinion to one's own wishes and getting managers to yell at each other, as opposed to one or two people saying "this is how it goes, get on board or go find another band"

Not sure if you've ever watched the Heartbreakers documentary... Benmont Tench is STILL so irritated and offended by the whole hired-hand thing he can barely talk about it.

I can only say that it was reported that Stevie and Christine both made equal money last year from the tour and it was a lot. They were joint third in the Forbes list for female entertainers last year.

I have to say that my eyebrows have been raised over Lindsey's attitude, because he seems to see himself as leader of the band these days, though Mick was doing much of the promotion in Australia, dealing with media etc. Fleetwood Mac had a history before he joined.

Him telling Christine she had to be firmly committed to return to the group - she had to ask his permission? And then Stevie told her to be in good shape when she returned because touring could be gruelling. I love Christine's response - she told Stevie she knew about that because she'd been in FM before her! Way to go in reminding her! (Even though I love Stevie and you can argue Lindsey had a point.)

I still find they have loads of musical chemistry onstage that is obvious. They all appear to have figured out a 'role'. But you can bet personalities and politics still play a part, as with most bands.

I'd love a new Fleetwood Mac album as much as anyone else, but trash-talking Stevie's solo work isn't going to make it manifest.

Maybe when she finally does hit the studio, she can record a cover of that song by Talk Talk. "It's my life. Don't you forget."

I guess I'm just saying: Consider the fact that Stevie is not married to Fleetwood Mac. She has her own career, her own goals, and things on her own list to accomplish before she's done, and there's nothing wrong with that.

Now, if she'd just send Lindsey some damn demos to work on, we could put this all behind us.

From what I've seen Forbes just goes by box office receipts, divides by 5, and guesstimates what people on their lists make. I wouldn't assume that Forbes is privy to what the internal contracts are about how that money gets divvied up within the band.

Could be right they are assuming an equal share, I have no way of knowing. But they shouldn't misrepresent things like that. Because they had both of them earning more income than Beyonce, who is supposed to be so powerful. Safe to say, they both did very well.

Even though I am primarily a Nicks fan (I listen to rock more than easy listening) I do respect Christine and think her contribution is just as valuable. She was the only reason why I bought a ticket last year. I don't go to concerts often it's a long way to travel. I didn't want to see the same show as 2004. But when I heard it was going to be all five, I wanted to go. When I got there I thought the crowd was a lot bigger than it was in 2004. In fact the scale of everything in general seemed bigger and it was a real buzz.

Some of my favorite and most memorable moments of the concert were Christine and she really gave a lot of energy all evening, which seemed to have also rejuvenated the others. It was great to see her come out from behind the keyboard to the front. I was in the front rows and thought she looked more like in her 40s. In my opinion, she deserves an equal share.

I've heard the Rolling Stones have very unequal payments. Despite being a very long term member, Bill Wyman said he was making more from his restaurant after he quit. But getting off track...

Yes, that article was about women in the music business who make a lot of money. Fleetwood Mac was a top earner last year, and there are two women in it, hence the women made a lot of money. I don't think it was an exact ranking.

I don't think Stevie said Lindsey said that. She did say that he said Christine "can't just come and go" more recently, when they were doing their London show and Chris came up to sing Don't Stop (before we knew the band was discussing her permanent return to the fold) but she didn't say that he said that when they were doing the SYW album. Lindsey may have said it, but she and Mick didn't attribute their position to anyone in particular. Stevie was the one who said what if they used Chris' song and it turned out to be a hit and then they couldn't do it in concert.

Mick indicated that he heard Lindsey and Christine talking on the phone and wondered if Christine could really do something on the SYW album. So, I wondered about that phone call. But I don't think they specified who said she can't record and not tour.

agreed, but Forbes gave them some sort of ranking, and the original poster's point was that the article rated Stevie and Christine at the same rank (regardless of what that ranking was) -- implying they made the same money off the tour. We're simply saying it seems highly unlikely they made the same money. I don't think anyone is disputing whatever amount it was, it was a lot.

Right. I'm guessing that Forbes figures that Stevie and Christine are 40% of Fleetwood Mac, so they probably used 40% of the band's haul to determine how they ranked as an entity in relation to the other women on the list. The implication that they made the same amount is just that, an implication. If anything, Forbes probably underestimated their take. It's certainly not an equal 5-way split, so Stevie and Christine's shares together would undoubtedly be more than 40% and maybe more like half.

Of course I could be completely wrong, and maybe Forbes has more inside info than I'm imagining.

Me too, but I sometimes wonder if there's really any magic left there. It wasn't on Say You Will (the songs were good, but they didn't really sound like Fleetwood Mac, in the way that Dreams or Gypsy or Sara sounded like Fleetwood Mac).

Thank goodness Lady was the only piano track on 24 Karat Gold, and it wasn't Stevie playing it. Maybe you don't have the album, but it wasn't a compilation of demos.

That's been the case since TITN. Fleetwood Mac clearly became secondary for Stevie after "Mirage," and the proof can be heard on TITN, BTM, and SYW. I'd argue that she got out of those albums what she put in.

Well that would be fair enough. The 'Glimmer Twins' write all the songs so its only fair they get the bulk of the cash. I think Wyman barely wrote anything in the Stones. I think the suggestion he didnt make much might be a bit of an exaggeration.

One who I think was a bit hard done by was Rick Wright in Pink Floyd. He was made a salaried player after The Wall despite being an original member and significant songwriter.

That's been the case since TITN. Fleetwood Mac clearly became secondary for Stevie after "Mirage," and the proof can be heard on TITN, BTM, and SYW. I'd argue that she got out of those albums what she put in.

True, but for Tango and BTM I think she gets a pass. TOSOTM was equally bad, and we all know why - she was tranqued.

The songs on SYW are great songs from a writing perspective, but they sound sterile, technological and cold, and I'd say it's a Lindsey, er, I mean a production issue, entirely. Not to pick on Lindsey, but his songs sound the same to me - cold and metallic. Steal Your Heart Away is the only one with any blood in it.

In contrast, Fleetwood Mac albums up through 1982 have some soul. The songs sound like they have life and blood flowing through them.

I thought her SYW stuff was solid. Granted, the chemistry between LB/SN isn't like LB/CM. But I loved Illume, Thrown Down, Running, Everybody Finds Out.

Great song, indeed, though it could be less metallic.

I don't know how else to explain it. SYW sounds like it was recorded in an aluminum foil lined chamber. Maybe it just needs a remix/remaster.

Either way, whatever they do, I hope the next album is a little less techy sounding.

I've been listening to SYW a lot recently, and Stevie is on fire on that album. I think if you cut SYW down to 5 songs from each of them, you have an incredible album:

Stevie:
Illume
Thrown Down
Running Through The Garden
Everybody Finds Out
Destiny Rules

Lindsey:
Peacekeeper
Miranda
Steal Your Heart Away
Bleed To Love Her
Say Goodbye

Those ten are, in my opinion, the best cuts from SYW and once you strip away the terrible and those better left for solo albums... it's a pretty amazing band album.

I think if they harmonised together a bit more it would have worked a lot better to. I read somewhere years ago, probably on here, how someone said it sounds like they "ghost" on each other's tracks - totally the best way to describe it.

I love your list. Great selection.

Say You Will would also have been a good opportunity to release two albums in quick succession. 20 songs were recorded to completion, with 18 on SYW and two bonus tracks on the deluxe edition. Imagine two 10-track albums, released 4-6 months apart. I do believe that might have generated a lot of buzz, given them two chart debuts in the same year, and the second album's release would likely have given a late sales boost to the first, maybe putting them both on the charts at the same time.

Not that chart placement matters, but chart position does give visibility, and that never hurts.

Oh well.

wasn't that Lindsey's original plan? he describes in DR doc how he envisioned them releasing an album, tour it, then releasing another album and tour that one and that would have given them a nice 5-year run.

Stevie nixed that so they reverted to SYW as we know it, and LB went on to release the rest of the songs he had plus new ones he wrote on SYW tour and in the meantime as two solo albums and toured those instead.

The only problem with two ten track albums being they'd have had one really good album and one pretty crap one.

Two really mediocre albums.

I'm not sure - I do remember talk of a double album, though. Maybe what that meant is the scenario you describe; I interpreted it as Tusk redux.

I suppose, but that's subjective really. I like all of SYW, except Red Rover grates on my nerves at times. And Smile At You is understated... But by and large, I'd have enjoyed both albums.

no, no - 2 separate scenarios and parts of the doc. although he may have been talking about both in the same segment - the one where he's going on about "eating a f*ck of a lot of money" ;)

no he was talking about one, double album.

they talked about how artists only get paid for 12 songs. On a double album they would have had almost double that number of songs. Stevie would not ever be willing to give up any money, so she would insist on getting paid for all her songs (8 or 9 or whatever it was.). She would not split the 12 evenly with Lindsey (which would mean she'd only get paid for like 6 of her songs and not all of them). That would leave Lindsey to get paid for only 4 songs or so of his. The rest he would have to put out for no money. That was the f#ckload of money he was willing to give up to get out the double album (all at once) that he wanted to do.

In the end, Stevie threatened to only tour for the first 40 dates that had already been planned if the band went forward with the double album. That forced Lindsey's hand, because he was banking on recouping money he lost on the double album from the touring, which would have meant touring for quite a long time-- far more than 40 dates. If she refused to do more than 40 tour dates, he'd be screwed out of recouping the money he lost on the album. So he did the math and decided it was better to shorten to a single album, with the compromise of 18 songs, and then the long tour. Boy needed to pay for that mansion the wife was designing.

I don't feel like doing f#ck all this wkend, so maybe I'll get around to it.

I was thinking the "nice 4-5 year run" was just the one album and tour. I mean, this *is* FM we're talking about--- a year to record the album, a few months to mix and master it, tour rehearsals for a ridiculous like 2 months (stunning for band that plays no new songs and has toured forever) and then touring around the world for a couple of years.... but now i'll have to re-watch!!

all 7-8 new songs Chris and Linds recorded together in 2014. plus 5 new songs Lindsey, Mick and John recorded back in 2012 that are not on the EP. although depending on what they are, maybe some of them can be a part of LB's new solo album.

Unless they have some special event soon - is it possible she truly is designing the outfits for the new cover??

^^^ I thought the same thing on the Stevie version of that thread.

I had an extremely vivid thought the other night about the new album cover... A plain white background, with the women in the band members wearing red, very much like the FM album cover, but extremely simple yet elegant poses from the five of them. I see Stevie leaning her head on mick's shoulder standing behind him, and just all five of them in some formation on this plain white background.. Nothing crazy, just really elegant. Simple.

When I saw the picture of the red dress with "Christine" written on it...

That's exciting to think about and would explain why the dress looks more theatrical than what Christine would wear, if it is part of an album cover theme. Michele

Since it is so hard to keep a secret in this day and age, doesn't it seem like if they were far enough along on an album to be prepping for the cover art, that we would have heard something more concrete about it? Has anyone seen anything on social media about what they are all up to these days? I wondered if anyone had been spotted out and about. I agree it would be great if they came up with something really special for what is likely their last big effort.

Well that "Christine" dress would not work on stage because too much of it would drag on the floor and would capture all the dirt and dust and John and Lindsey's guitar cables. I bet it is either for the Grammy's or Iovine's wedding.

^^Of course I don't know Christine at all, but from what I do know about her, she wouldn't wear this dress to a wedding (or elsewhere). That is not her style at all. Something so tight and attention grabbing - not Christine McVie.

I don't know. I actually can't recall seeing Christine McVie in a dress for a long time, at least the last couple years. But from what I've seen on and off stage, she does wear tight, fitted clothes all the time. She's super slim and is very put together. If she wears a dress, I could see it being form fitting.

I don't know. I honestly don't think they would wear matching colored dresses to any event - whether it be the Grammys or a wedding.

It seems way too coincidental that she would be teasing something involving Stevie and then post another photo of the same color material with a mannequin labeled Christine just a few days later.

But. I digress. It's ALL about the surprise announcement/release these days anyway so I doubt we'll even find out what's going on until right when it's happening.

I don't know. I actually can't recall seeing Christine McVie in a dress for a long time, at least the last couple years. But from what I've seen on and off stage, she does wear tight, fitted clothes all the time. She's super slim and is very put together. If she wears a dress, I could see it being form fitting.

Apparently whoever edited and airbrushed this picture does not have very good attention to detail. They smoothed out her upper chest and neck and a little bit in her face, but they forgot to do her hands.

Maybe the last month of silence means they have been working secretly on this album. Of we didn't have save Stewarts involvement we wouldve never knew about 24 karot being recorded. None of the 5 Are active in so is I media at all. Its very possible thst are recording under the radar.

I mean the last news was straight from stevie saying yes we will do an album.

I was also thinking that she's probably been getting fixed up with great dermatologists and such now that she's back in the public eye (and with Stevie knowing all the best people to go to) but she needs to get them working on her hands. You can get age spots if not eliminated then definitely reduced with laser and other types of treatments. Why get a facelift (and veneers/caps) and then your hands give you away?

Well that "Christine" dress would not work on stage because too much of it would drag on the floor and would capture all the dirt and dust and John and Lindsey's guitar cables. I bet it is either for the Grammy's or Iovine's wedding.

I don't think she would be caught dead wearing it on stage. I think she might wear it on an album cover. I mean when they did that "Justice is blind" photo when she and Lindsey were sword fighting, she was only dressed like that for the album cover. I think she might dress in that red thing for an album cover, where she was not exactly Christine, but Christine playing a part.

The dress looks like something Stevie would wear--or would have worn back in the day. I can't imagine it for Christine and hope it isn't. I like Christine just as she is. The chick who wears pants and looks great doing so.

On another (sour) note:I check the internet everyday for some sort of news on the progress of the new album. As usual, the waiting is frustrating.

Well, Christine looks good in dresses too, just not that kind. And she usually wears dresses that show her legs.

Frankly, that dress looks like something some kind of high school kid would wear.

I disagree, in 1977 at the AMA and at the grammys Christine wore two different blue fitted dresses and she looked gorgeous.
When did she wear short dresses? I really want to see her, I only saw photo of her wearing shorts (and looking extremely good in it).

Well, they were short skirts, rather than dresses. Even when she's worn long skirts in the past you can still see her legs most of the time.

Naturally. Who can forget the Mirage stage outfit, for example? But I'm really taken with her look since the mid-90s onward: pantsuits. She pulls the look off wonderfully.

Well they won't be going into the studio in March. Mick's travelling down under at the end of March with his MF's Blues Band. I think I recall somebody on here saying (according to Mick) they would be in the studio in May. This still ties in with an interview he gave where he said they'd be going into the studio in the Spring

If they owe us anything, why would a press release be it? If anything, they've said an album would eventually come from this reunion, so that's what they would owe us. They don't owe us a progress report.

Ummm...they can do whatever they want, but they promised us one. OVER AND OVER the last two years. See that doesn't do it for me. What makes that different than the Dance tour except without any new songs and they're nearly 20 years older? I'm sure it's great for them to have their bandmate and musical partner back, it's their livelihood after all, but as a fan, if they don't give us new music then it really means little to me that she came back. That reunion tour already happened in 97/98 and it was recorded on video and audio recordings for us to enjoy forever.

Yes indeed .I agree 100 percent with the cash grab but I went to 2 shows to just enjoy all 5 of them performing without an album in mind.We are very lucky that Chris came back home to join them.

I concur. Lindsey touted Christine's return signaled as a new chapter in the band. I assume, beyond their oldies world tour, that meant a new album. If the Rumours configuration of the band had made more than five studio albums, it wouldn't matter too much to me. I suppose all the solo albums sort of make up for lack of a few more albums they could have made as the five fireflies.

Given the numerous upheavals this band has faced in it's circuitous history, it's amazing the brand/band has even survived. Yet, time is ticking, and sooner than later Fleetwood Mac will retire. As a lifelong fan, I can't imagine the idea of not wanting them to give us one more album of new music; a parting gesture from themselves to their fans. Knowing that new music is just sitting there nearly completed is maddening. I admire your outlook, but it's the prospect of new music that made me enthusiastic about the reunion. It was hyped before a year long tour began and so naturally I am champing at the bit. (It is champing, not chomping right?) I get this, but given their ages, I worry about it. The more practical part of me says they should have completed the new music BEFORE going out on the road. Christine is 72. John has had a serious health scare. All of them are at a critical stage in their lives where it is quite possible anything could happen. I just hope that if we have to wait yet one more year for the album that all of them are still in good shape.

We are all impatient. I get that. I cant think of a band that after touring the world for 1 1/2 years went immediately in the studio to record another album. And if they did, the music would suffer because their heads would not be in the game. Personally, I don't want an album for album's sake. I don't want an "extended" extended play. Please let them take 9 months off to relax, do what they want to do, and possibly write songs for the new album. I suspect and hope by the fall they will all be in the studio hard at work. I hate it when people accuse the tour as a "cash grab." Its a miracle that Chris came back. Remember when Mick and Stevie said there was a better chance of an asteroid hitting the earth than Chris coming back. That tour was amazing and the fans are so thankful. They gave it their all with touring the states twice before going to Europe and Australia and New Zealand.
They need their space. They need their rest. If they immediately went to the studio, the music would not be as good and the chances of a tour after the new record would be slim. I am betting there will be one more album and a farewell tour. This deserves time and creativity.

What bothers me about this is that apparently there are a few songs already essentially finished. I don't understand why we fans aren't being given the chance to purchase that music.

I really don't care if Stevie throws in a few harmony vocals on the songs that are already recorded. The songs are finished, with or without her input. The lineup of this band has always been fluid, and FM can exist without Stevie, just as they did without Chris for all those years.

That can happen when the band says they're gonna do something and don't. You'd think by now those of us who've followed the band for more than 15 or 20 years would've learned. I think "owe" isn't the proper word (I can't think of a better one at present) but it's been a long time since Say You Will, and with the return of Chris, perhaps "owing" the world a new record does factor into it a little bit. I think if you're a band, then you record and put out music. That's what bands do and should do. Touring is a factor for sure, but new music (for me) is and should be the primary motivator. Sadly for the Mac it doesn't seem to be, and that's okay. I wish they'd at least pretend like it was. And there's so many lost opportunities too. Why didn't they film Chris's return (like with The Dance) and give us a live concert to tide us over?

I agree that's what they're aiming for. It's the silence that concerns me, though. Nothing from any of the band members about new music in quite a while now. In fact, we really haven't heard a peep from them since the tour wrapped. This day and age, if they were recording somewhere together, it would leak out via Twitter or something. Nothing there, either. Christine is back in England, too- not a great sign.

However, there *might* be a glimmer of hope in the fact that we also haven't gotten any reports from Camp Stevie about a summer solo tour. I think if that were going to be the case, one of her backing musicians would post something on Facebook or something at the very least. Exactly. Nothing "spoiled or greedy about it." Rather, we are diehard fans, many of us who kept listening in the lean TIME-era, and who championed the band's cause again and again, when even greatest hits tours seemed impossible. I don't think it's impatient or greedy or spoiled or unreasonable to wonder what the progress is on an album ROLLING STONE covered as in the works 1.5 years ago. Geesh.

And maybe I'm a broken record, but these people are getting up there. Acting at their own maddeningly half-assed pace is not a luxury anymore.

And for what it's worth, I'd have rather have had another Christine album, if I'd known getting all five on board for one project was such an uphill flipping battle.

Christine went into the studio with Lindsey and Mick (April 2014). Christine and Lindsey co-wrote about 4 songs and recorded about 8 tunes together. Stevie hasn't contributed anything, as of yet. Both Christine and Lindsey said that the chemistry between them was even better than they expected and the music was wonderful. (I'm paraphrasing, but that's the basics)

Considering Stevie can't really sell her own albums, they figure it won't make much difference.

Some people need to chill a bit.
They've just done a mega tour and deserve a little bit of a break (but not too long). The spanner in the works that has stopped an album appearing before now is Stevie. Its her fault.
They have lots of songs part-finished and Mick said they'd be going into the studio in the Spring. Last we heard they still weren't sure Stevie would be on board. However, she doesn't seem to be doing anything...no evidence of a SN tour or album in the near future so my guess is she'll join them in May to add vocals to the songs already recorded and add a few of her own (which she's tucked away writing right at this very minute).
Mick with soon be with his band down under for a while.
Chris is back in the UK- probably tying up loose ends. I'm still not sure her house has sold yet. I think it had some sort of open viewing day recently.

My guess is they'll all reconvene soon to sort out an album that will be released later this year. Big shabang tour in 2017 to mark 50 yrs (plus 40 yrs since Rumours, 30 yrs since Tango, 20 yrs since the Dance).

The album will happen... have faith.
(but they're all big grown ups that owe everyone absolutely diddly-squat)

At no point has any band member stated that the songs were/are finished. The Lindsey tracks that were recorded with Mitchell Froom in 2012 may be close to completion, but would still require input from Christine and Stevie. The tracks Christine and Lindsey recorded in 2014, by their own admission, were not completed with both commenting that further work would be undertaken. Naturally, Stevie will be required to add harmony vocals to some or all of these songs plus record her own.
As of January 2016, Stevie has stated that she is on board to record a new Mac album so despite the fact that she has delayed proceedings by not previously committing to the project, her involvement is no longer in doubt. Much of the “blame” actually falls upon every member for deciding to tour from 2013 through to late 2015. That is the primary reason for the album not being progressed/completed.
I sincerely hope Stevie abandons any solo tour plans for this year and works on creating some strong material for the Mac album. If she were to dig into the vault, there are the likes of “Julia” (could be produced to become the sequel to “Sara”), “Forsaken Love”, “China Doll”, “Sanctuary” and many others that could be fashioned into classic Mac tracks. I also think she should consider recording “Fireflies” as a piano ballad (as per the demo snippet).
This final Mac album has the potential to be a worthy swansong if all concerned approach it with enthusiasm and consideration for one another. Even if they do resume recording soon, I would highly doubt a 2016 release – next year is my bet.

Thinking psychologically here for a moment, I believe there is a great reason why Stevie seemingly isn't too thrilled with a new album, even though she IS participating in it. While I've never met her, her behaviour is striking to me.

I firmly believe (and Stevie has said it many times), that she owes everything to "her band", that they are responsible for her fame and "princess status". I might seemingly be going too deep into this, but I truly feel that deep in her subconscious, Stevie refuses to accept the fact that Fleetwood Mac one day will be over, and is putting up a fight because she doesn't feel ready to accept her own fate. Deep somewhere in the darkest places of her mind, she never wants it to end, despite all of the problems and fights and heartbreak, etc. If she acknowledges the fact that it's over, it's over because she gives it credence.

She will never accept a "farewell" package or anything of the sort. She has lost many people throughout the years, everything is changing, and most likely she feels unready to accept it. So don't give her a hard time, she (or anyone else for that matter!) owes us nothing.

I'm also not saying this to "defend" her, or anything like that, but from someone who has extensively studied the behavioural and emotional states for healing purposes, it's just my opinion.

What bothers me about this is that apparently there are a few songs already essentially finished. I don't understand why we fans aren't being given the chance to purchase that music.

Why aren't we able to be given the chance to purchase that music???

Simply because it's not finished. Respecting the integrity of the artistic process, Fleetwood Mac is a stickler with production. Just because we are aware they have some songs in the can, it's senseless to think/demand they would release them piece-meal as they progress (Stevie-less or otherwise). They are still in the process of making a body of work, and it will be presented as such. We will all get the chance to purchase that music, when it's released on their own terms, not ours.

The notion that they might have previewed a new unreleased song on their previous tour is intriguing, but there is little precedent for such a thing. Because the group is an embarrassment of riches (three hit-making singer/songwriters), it leaves very little wiggle room in their set lists, and it's such a delicate balance. Their last tour was decidedly a strict study/rumination of their 1975-1987 era.

As an established band, known worldwide for forty-something years, they are not lacking exposure! And they fully understand their place as vintage dinosaurs in a youth-based market. Now it's less about market share and more about integrity, and leaving with one last artistic statement.

If they could brag about this new "profound" music in ROLING STONE 1.5 years ago and sell the then upcoming tour as a prelude to this compelling next chapter, then they can at least give an official press release with a timeline. We've waited, we've supported their greatest hits reunion, we've agonized over whether Stevie will or will not participate in the new album, we've wondered if there will be a new album, we've watched the release date of this supposed new album change from the end of 2015 to possibly 2016 to possibly 2017. I'm really disgusted by it. So many ardent fans have waited decades for new music by these five people. I don't see why they can't collectively come up with a reasonable timeline, stick to it, and let us know right away. If they could whet our appetites with news of the McVie-Buckingham collaborations, they can certainly respect us enough to follow through on something more concrete. I'm tired of hearing that the new album will come out in a year or two, when we don't event know for sure it will come out, what the progress is, what the plan is, etc. Whatever their plans, they owe--and I believe owe is the right word--their fans some real information.

Yes, we've exaggerated the completeness of these songs. Not only would Christine and Stevie need to add to the Mitchell Froom tracks, Stevie and John need to add to the Lindsey/Christine collaborations.

Yes, we may have exaggerated the completeness of the material. Thus underscoring the need for the band to release clear information about where they are in the process. We deserve concrete information. We've been teased by the prospect of the new songs, which aren't all that new anymore. The teasing may have been a good PR strategy for selling tickets to the upcoming tour, but now that the tour is over and they've made their millions on us, they should give us a clear timeline.

Yes .You have good points here. They dont owe us nothing.I dont have it in writing here saying that FM owes Skip a album.

I never take those magazine articles to seriously as what any artist said about whats coming up for them .They dont know what the future holds and things come up.

The same as they say at the end of their concert as they say"We will see you here next year".

Give it time guys like I've been saying. We might turn blue like the Blue Man Group but it will be worth the wait.

After its been said and done.We be fussing about it on how its so great or some say it sucks for months on end. Also God willing .I.m not counting them out to close up shop after 2017.

They can slack of these long tours and do small shows. They dont need the cash.

I'd like to draw everyone's attention to a new Christine interview as posted in the 'Christine McVie forum' (many thanks Danielle)

(selected exceprts)

Since McVie’s return, the band has completed a world tour taking in 120 shows. Now Fleetwood Mac is in the process of recording a new album.

“I started sending demos to Lindsey and he worked on them, then we got together to start making a record – we’re talking two years ago now. We only got it half-finished; we’ve got seven or eight songs at the moment, and we’re very, very thrilled with them.”

Fans will have to be patient – getting each band member in the same room is not as easy as it once was. “I’m waiting to hear when we’re going to finish it, which I suspect will be April. Everybody has different things going on. But my feet are firmly planted in this record at the moment, because quite a lot of the songs are mine!

“The songs are fantastic, they have a whiff of Rumours about them. I think people could do with a new Mac album from the five of us.” Once the album is ready, McVie says the band will embark on another tour. “Depending on how decrepit we feel, it may not be the last. We’re all fit, so we think we can do another tour and put a record out – and people seem to love us, so we appreciate that.”

For now, McVie is back in London, and enjoying what Mayfair has to offer. “I love it around Bond Street – now I’m back in the city, that’s top of my list: burning some plastic!” As for Fleetwood Mac, she is content just seeing where the music will take her. “It’s a rebirth, in a sense – and it’s fantastic because we’re way over 60. I’m having a ball.”

Thanks for posting this. I love how enthusiastic Chris is to music and touring again. I also love how many of the songs are Christine songs. Its sort of spooky because last week I posted my dream about Christine and what she said about the new album. Its almost identical to what she actually said here that once Fleetwood Mac members go their own way its always hard to get them together again

Thanks for the post Fuzzy Plum. I checked both Christine's Facebook page and the FM website last night and there was nothing. I guess this is as recent as recent news gets! I am excited to read that she has at least a month in mind (April) when the band will begin working on the new matieral. And I'm glad she has a personal investment in it. This kind of information is what I was looking for. It's still somewhat iffy but at least now we know something....

I'm sure it will happen, maybe not by April but they will finish this album. I just need 3 or 4 new Stevie tracks and at this point a late 2016/early 2017 release for the album works for me.

I betcha Stevie has more than enough great songs up her sleeve, some new and old demos, she most probably is going through the process now writing or deciding which would be more suitable for F/M .. Im SURE the whole band would want to be fully involved, bouncing off each others creative ideas, just like the old days.. This perhaps being their final album its gonna be well worth the wait  i expect some really healthy competition between all 3 song writers.. Exciting times ahead :D

Oh god, I think I would rather she didn't contribute then. I love Stevie and her songs the most but Dave Stewart's production and composition style is utterly tacky. He should have stopped producing back in the 80's. Even then his songs were bad. I just cannot stand the thought of Dave producing her songs, he makes them so unlikable and synth-pop-py.

JUST NO, NO, NO!!!!

Aaaaaaarrrrrrggggggggghhhhhhhhhh. Just when things were looking up.
This is bad news for Fleetwood Mac fans.
If she's been working with Dave on tracks then that can surely only mean a SN Songs From The Vault. Surely he wouldn't be producing songs for a FM release???? I mean he could, but surely he's need music made by Chris, Lindsey, John and Mick in the first place. I'm pretty certain Stevie hasn't done anything creatve with FM so there wouldn't be any Mac material available for Dave to work on.

I'd guess she's working with Dave on material for a SN album for release later this year.
She may still join FM in May/April to work on FM material for a release at the end of the year/early 2017.

I don't know. The question specifically refers to a Fleetwood Mac album, and he answers that Stevie and Dave are working on "her tracks" rather than saying "a solo project" or something like that. That makes me think he meant "her tracks for the FM album." Maybe she's just developing her demos a bit more with Dave so that Lindsey will understand the vision she has for the songs.

Obviously I could be way off, but given the way the question and answer each read, I didn't necessarily think 24KG Volume 2.

I tend to agree.. can't really read into it... I lean toward FM album.. Based on knowing she's not been comfortable working with Lindsey and know they don't have much agreement and chemistry when writing... I wish Christine would work with Stevie more. Those two could make incredible music. They just need to break thru the wall.

Y'all, Stevie has fleshed out demos to bring to FM since the Tusk era. Possibly before that. Songs like Smile At You and so many others have been confirmed as being born outside of FM with session musicians. I think Stevie does this to make herself feel like an equal. Chris & Lindsey flesh out their own songs because they play instruments; Stevie doesn't, so she needs help bringing her concepts to fruition. This is absolutely nothing new.

There has been an update on the article citing stevie will do a few solo projects beforehand

Good. She probably tour too.She better get those tour dates booked before all weekend dates are gone.I'm not fond on weekday shows.
More likely it probably will be a casino tour which is fine with me.

She could throw FM a bone while she's working on her stuff. With Dave .Her stuff will get recorded quickly like the last time.Between her tour she could do the FM stuff with FM.I know when she hits the road. The fans will bust her balls on when she going to record with FM.She must be getting tired by now hearing the fussing.

If she did not care. Why bother putting out 24K and maybe a second one.Us fans only know the demo music.

Oh Gosh. I hope that is NOT true. This is NOT a Stevie solo album for her to bring in some private producer. Maybe she is doing this to irritate Lindsey. Its almost as bad as when she wanted Sheryl Crow to take Christine's place.
Please let that not be the case. I want a real Fleetwood Mac sound on the new record.

if by "we" you mean Stevie is better off - sure, she's better off if we didn't know it. if this was not out, it would look like all the macsters don't want the album and haven't done anything on it, not just her.

maybe others in the FM are tired of being blamed for no new albums from FM, or for how long it supposedly takes for them to put the album together, when they actually want new albums more than anyone?

The more I think about it the more I think Richard really hasn't got a clue. Though he might speak to a couple of them every now and then I'm not sure he's really privy to what's going on.

I've just spent 10 minutes looking back through Dave Stewart's twitter (it reminded me that Twitter's such a pile of sh!t, waste of people's lives- apologies to those Ledgies that tweet) and there's absolutely nothing to suggest he might have been doing any production for Stevie. He seems to have been so busy promoting his book and doing so many other things it would seem difficult to fit in any sort of production for Stevie Nicks (but who knows- he does seem to always be able to juggle a lot of projects). That's not to say there aren't any future plans.

Richard did say it's something he heard or read somewhere... he really doesn't know- probably read something on here at some point.

The fact that Waddy and Jimmy are touring is the most telling of all. The Dixie Chicks tour is huge, Joe Walshs' is smaller, but the timeline could suggest recording with the Mac in the spring. She's no fool. She's not gunna waste any time while she's still healthy. There hasn't been a year of inactivity in over 20 years. Something is in the works.

I still think y'all are off base. I don't think Stevie would ever get her songs on a Fleetwood Mac album without Fleetwood Mac members actually playing on her songs. All she is doing right now (if she's actually doing anything at all) is getting help from Dave in regards to transforming her poetry into demo form. She can then bring those demos to Fleetwood Mac for them to craft into completed songs. This is exactly the way she's worked for 35 years. Rewatch Destiny Rules- Stevie only shows up to the recording of Say You Will once she's gotten her demos ready for prime time. That's ALL that's going on here.

Stevie is smart. She knows she can't sell lots of material like she used to do. She only gets 13 days in a studio because the record company knows it's not going to spend $$$ for months on end for an album that won't sell.. She's playing casinos, touring w/ Rod Stewart...

With FMac... She gets her own limo, flies in the FM jet, gets multi million payoff...

I do respect that despite having to go a little cheaper, she still puts out a small machine. But, it's time for her to contribute to the band that got her there. She can make some magic. It's been a mutually beneficial gig for all the members. Here's hoping..

And who is to say Dave won't join the whole band in the studio come April (if Christine's quote from that recent interview is accurate) and work primarily on Stevie's tracks, with Lindsey also participating to some extent in overseeing the overall production of the album?

They talked extensively in the past about bringing in an outside producer for the album (LB's choice being Mitchell Froom), so that's not a new idea. And having that outside producer (here, Dave Stewart) working only on Stevie's songs also doesn't seem too out of the ordinary for this band. Why not have Dave and LB share co-production credit's on Stevie's songs?

SeanJT

Excellent idea, Josh2003. Dave Stewart made Stevie's songs on 'In Your Dreams' sound magical; more like Stevie than she has sounded since the early 80's.

I love Dave Stewart, and I think the collaboration with Lindsey will make Fleetwood Mac sound more like Fleetwood Mac than they have since 'Mirage' / 'Tango'.

With the momentum they have with 'Extended Play' ('Sad Angel', 'Miss Fantasy') as well as the latest interview with Christine saying the new music sounds a bit like 'Rumours', bringing Stevie in co-produced by Dave and Lindsey sounds like a prefect formula.

I only hope it will be a double album like the Eagles' 'Long Road Out of Eden'.

I think you're spot on. But remember Dave wrote most of the music for most of the songs on IYD so I think she's getting more than just a little help from him. I believe she's actually writing the songs with him. Her ability to write music seems to have faded in recent years.

Dave Stewart made Stevie's songs on 'In Your Dreams' sound magical

I respect your opinion SeanJT but I'd also respectfully have to disagree with you.
I thought he made Stevie's In Your Dreams songs sound okay- nothing special and certainly not 'magical'. If he were to produce any FM songs like IYD then I'd predict it being quite a bland FM album. I hope this doesn't happen.

Though I have no reason to believe there's any bad blood between Lindsey and Dave I have a feeling Lindsey would rather eat his Turner Model 1 than allow Dave Stewart to have production credits on a Fleetwood Mac album.

I agree with you 100%. Dave Stewart was genius with the Eurothmics. But his stuff with Tom Petty was odd and his stuff with Stevie was bland. It was good but I would prefer to hear Lindsey and Christine mold Stevie's raw demos than them being brought with Dave's influence.

How far along are you in planning a new Fleetwood Mac album?

We aren’t far along in any specific sense. My mantra is to work on my dynamic with Stevie. She was a little uncomfortable when we got on the road last time, for whatever reason. Part of it was that she missed Christine, part of it was that I was getting 50 percent of the face time onstage and she wasn’t used to having a guy get all that space. I think it threw her context out a little. So this time around I am very much wanting to make everyone as comfortable as possible and have that be the most important thing. But we have discussed, when this tour is done, going into the studio. The only specific we know is that we are leaning toward finding an outside producer. I think it would help to have an overviewer. It was pretty hard taking the reins last time. Not so much with the music but with the band politics.

Have any producers in mind?

We had a short list, but I have no idea. We’ve talked about everyone form Daniel Lanois to Dave Stewart to Rick Rubin. That pretty much runs the gamut of approaches. We have to meet with a few people and see how it feels.

Stevie Nicks: I would very much like to do that. I think the world should have one more kickass Fleetwood Mac record. This tour could go on for 135 shows, but when we come off the road we will be a finely tuned, well-rehearsed band, which is the best thing to be when you go into the studio because you’re already hot. Your chops are up, you’re singing great, you’ve been playing fantastic music for a year. And writing on the road is really fun. Not to mention that we already both have enough songs to do a record now. But it all depends on if we’re having fun and enjoying each other.

I don't think Stevie wants FM to be over, because in her mind it signifies the end. She is very much a sentimental woman, and I think her apprehension is more of her subconscious not wanting to admit surrender to time/old-age. Notice in all her interviews from years ago, she always mentions herself being old, still doing this when she's old, etc. It shows a preoccupation with with the concept aging.

There would be no logical reason for her to "refuse" working with the album, because its not like she's competing for album sales, hates Lindsey too much, or is too busy with other things. She made 24KG work by releasing it MIDWAY through a FM tour (!!!) and still hasn't toured behind it, so obviously if she had plans of her own she would have attempted to accomplish them by now. With Christine back, I think it gives her some fuel to keep going, but I also think she's starting to see the end of the road, and its scaring her, so she's flipping out.

That's my psychological evaluation though, not that it means anything.

I think she feels insecure that her songwriting talents have faded badly, while Chris and Lindsey seem to breezily just write and work well together. Therefore whatever she brings to the team will be old demos or Dave Stewart melodies. She is likely also hyperconscious of how she will therefore be compared to them when a project does eventually come out. Plus, she may be insisting on a disproportionate share of any credit or profit that might come from a new album, causing the others to push back. This is likely the last hurrah. And she is both scared of it and eager to expoit it.

Absolutely, she's been the best seller of the three but not necessarily the most talented. I think they all have superpowers and when they put them together, this amazing thing happens. You can hear the magic when Chris and Lindsey work together.

I don't think she trusts that as much because she's in her head about Lindsey and not in her muse. She needs to trust what's good about her. I liked some of her SYW work. She needn't be scared, just get out of that inflated head of yours and activate that superpower!

You're probably right. But still, how much effort does it take to hand in three pianodemo's, and let Linds And Chris fool around with it, plan three weeks village recorder and enhance her voice on the LB/CM songs and finish those of her.

did that same reasoning apply back in 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2014, or it just started now?

that's a lot of endings - poor thing she must be constantly living in fear! :p

i guess all we can do is wait until April to see if Christine's vague timeline holds true. I'm not all that optimistic.

Well, we know she's the most reliable when it comes to information. Go back to 2013 when she said. "I think I might like to join FMac again. " lol

I heard from a very good source that they will finish up this new album in May, then ultimately tour behind it. As far as a Stevie solo tour goes, there's a slight chance for one this Fall, but unlikely.

I heard from a source that says the same thing (about the album). Haven't heard a thing about a Stevie tour.

Hahahahahaha... you don't want to hear her groan through her old catalog, with Dave Stewarts' 80's synths? And then run to the casino to see it?
