I would love to see EP evolve into an album. I hope they're developing new songs between legs of the tour. I don't think they will have any new songs ready for the Euro leg, though.

It is so strange to hear him talk so openly about Stevie Nicks even tho he still struggles openly to find and use the right words, lol! And for it to seem unrehearsed is a new one. He sounded very relaxed. No mania in evidence! I like this LB!

After being a fan for 20 years, I'm finally trying to look at it in a different light. If it happens, I will be thrilled beyond words. If it doesn't, then I won't be surprised.

I love this new LB of the past couple years, too. He finally seems like he's comfortable in his own skin. He's comfortable with who he was, he's comfortable with who he is, and he's comfortable with wherever life takes him from here. For someone who has seemed so insecure for all of his professional life, it's wonderful to see him at peace after all these years.

Great interview. Lindsey is very open and honest lately.

The advertisement before hand was heartbreaking though...the driver texting who paralysed a young boy ...she didn't see him because she was texting "I'm on my way".

What do you guys think the 'real' hold-up is with Stevie Nicks and her seeming disinterest in doing a FM record, handing over new songs? Or even for that matter committing to much in terms of a BN release. I swear, we're never gonna get that flipping record on CD if we have to depend of those two!
I think more than anything it's the climate within the music industry these days. LB seems to REALLY want to do something! Of course, that statement could be sooooo wrong, lol! Any other opinions, ideas?

I think Stevie does not write much music any more. Lyrics, yes but music, no. In Your Dreams contains songs she either wrote long ago, or she wrote the lyrics but someone else came up with the music - usually Dave Stewart. A few years ago she said in an interview she had not written much of anything in a year and a half. Maybe she's bored with writing music?? Can't come up with new ideas?? Therefore, perhaps she feels she doesn't have much to contribute to a FM album - not like the old days.

yeah, maybe she needs a lot more help getting material together these days and really doesn't want to lean on Lindsey in that way any more. And besides, their styles have grown in different directions over the years. They aren't musically in tight synch like they were years ago when they were writing and rehearsing and recording together all the time.

I think that music has always been the struggle for SN. The lyrics...poetry is her tour de force. And, I'm wondering just how HARD she wants to work anymore...she seems to be invited to do these one-off guest appearances a lot and I think she really enjoys them. I know I do!
I would love to see SN and LB put BN out on cd with a few bonus tracks (2 each too much to ask?) and, why would LB not want to use the fantastic band they used to record BN? I guess Waddy Wachtel's close affiliation with SN is something LB would find problematic? But they could do a nice show, a little talk and make us all really happy! I also wonder just how much overall interest there would be for the BN disc?
Also a little worried that SN is coming to an end with FM. No CM, LB is married with kids as is JM. Anyone else find the almost nonexistent relationship on stage between MF and SN weird? guess I do kind of believe that being with FM on the road is hard for SN in many ways and that going back to them gets harder every time, even tho the love will always be. :distress:

Just how hard does Stevie want to work anymore???
Stevie has been working her 60+ yr old arse off pretty much non-stop since the end of the 2009 Mac tour. She has been more productive than ever. A new solo album, solo tours, the Rod Stewart thang, lots of IYD 's promotion, AI, Oprah, Ellen, Sound City Players, ect...
As far as her relationship w/ Mick:
I think its funny that when Lindsey wants to quit the band or doesn't want them to bother him for three years ...its ok...
Christine retires.....wants to be left alone...its ok...
Stevie wants to extend her solo promotion of IYD 's....Mick wines like a B....and starts w/ the guilt trip....its not ok..

Stevie said she had to have a sit down w / Mick about the Playboy article .....So, I definitely think that their relationship suffered..in 2009 he was her BFF....2013???? not so much. But, this isn't the first time Mick has ruffled her feathers...they seem to have moved on like all the times before. Mick has said and done worse to her over thee years. Mick and a lot of others, don't give Stevie the same amount of respect as Chris and Lindsey.

I think at the most, we could get one more Mac album...but Stevie is probably going to jump back into her solo career ...time is not on her side. She still has a lot she wants to say thru her music...She doesn't want to dedicate the time it would take to record a Mac album and not be happy with how her songs turn out, like w/SYW.

Haven't read the Playboy article, I'll do that next...

I do think that if we get anything else from FM it might be another EP for the second leg of this tour and that just might be it for them :distress: just got choked up at that thought:( I think it just might be BN next but how and when...I don't know:shrug:

Unfortunately, SN set herself up for disrespect and it's very hard to win it back completely once you're THAT destroyed. She has definitely come out the other side over the past 10-15 years and her self-confidence in standing up to FM (even tho MF, the jerk, commented, "only when the camera's on") is evidence of the shake up that's occurred in the power balance of FM. As out there as she can be, I just love Stevie Nicks! i think she will be in our lives for a long time to come, if we're lucky! Long live The Queen!

I think it is painfully obvious that Stevie either cannot write music any more or doesn't want to bother... even on TISL and SYW she relied on other writers or the vault for many songs, seven years full of covers-ridden concerts elapsed until IYD, which was almost totally written by others (only 3 songs were totally her compositions), and now she is balking at new FM music. She would be best advised to simply comb the archives for the beautiful unreleased demos and forget the need to write new stuff.

Is there a transcript of this somewhere?

There is now... I assume you're probably more interested in the latter questions but I've transcribed the whole thing anyway. For posterity or just because.

_ _ _

*saying hello*

B: You're one of those musicians who people, they know you, they grew up with you and then they hear you play guitar, they hear you do something solo, and they're knocked over all over again.

L: Well, you know, it's one thing in the context of the group, generally speaking anyway, where you are a band member and you have to... I mean, I've always tried to be a player who works in the service of the song. And sometimes that playing, it kind of sinks into the fabric of the production. And of course you get out there doing solo work and there's more a chance to kind of step out and do more of the fingerpicking thing by itself often. So yeah, you tend to be able to cover a little more ground that way.

B: Extended Pay is the new release. I just played Sad Angel for our audience. It sounds, you guys just fall right back into the groove and it's so interesting to me because I think about the stories behind Rumours, how long it took to put that together, and now how expedient you guys are -

L: It's ironic, is it not?

B: It's a little ironic. So why -

L: Well, you know, those were different days. Um, I think, you know, there's some little axiom - work expands or contracts given the amount of time you have to do it - and I think there was not only a sense that we had as much time as we needed. And really, Rumours wasn't a year of straight work. We were doing a few months or sometimes weeks and then going back out on the road and... But yes, we were, the making of Rumours was not an efficient process. You have to also look at it through the eyes of that time and the subculture that existed at that time and also the fact that we were still kind of finding our legs in terms of an approach. We had done one album and Rumours was an attempt to break away from some of the constraints of that and to find out our way and we were kind of experimenting around seeing where that was going to go. And if you compare that to now, we've pretty much got our drill down now so there is some, we've been doing this for awhile and I think it's a little easier to fall into what you know you can do.

B: While you do have the drill down, like you said, it has been ten years since we've heard any new Fleetwood Mac music so were you concerned that it wasn't going to go down the way it ended up going down in the studio?

L: Well, you know, I had a lot of new stuff and, um, I was coming off a solo album, Seeds We Sow, and actually had done some one man shows so creative juices were flowing. I wasn't too worried about it. Um, John and Mick are one of the great rhythm sections in rock and when you get that together and give them something interesting to play on, it's always going to turn out. I mean, certainly there was some sense in terms of the production but I wanted to work with someone who was lowkey and would not come in with too much of an agenda. I had had, had never worked with Mitchell Froom before but certainly had had many conversations with him and we had always said we would together sometime. And so he was the perfect, uh, extra element. So no, I mean, sure things can always go not the way you want them to but I was pretty confident about it and we all felt that it was a very appropriate thing to be doing at this point in time, knowing that we were going to be touring. And we knew we wouldn't have time to do a complete album before we started rehearsing but we wanted to make a start and to keep, see where it went. And, you know, if we do an album it'll be, we'll have to complete it after we're done with this tour. Um, but we did want to share some of the music with people now and to try and do a little bit of it onstage. And so it turned out very well on that level.

B: Obviously, the internet has its drawbacks when it comes to copyright issues and intellectual property issues but the flipside is, it must be really nice to have that expediency where you record some music and now it's available to anyone in the world who wants to get a hold of it.

L: Well, that's right and, you know, we've seen the business change a great deal and the model of the large company is in a mess because of that but, you know, we don't really, uh, we're not beholden to that model anymore necessarily and we kind of got in under the wire with that. And we go out and we tour and we do that thing which we've always done. So yeah, it's great to be able to say 'hey, let's put out an EP' and it becomes sort of a non-brainer in terms of making it available and having there be this ease to it. So yeah, it was a good time to do it, I think.

B: Tell me the story behind Without You because I understand that it was a lost song.

L: It was. I mean, uh, there is some disagreement as to when it was written. Stevie's been introducing that onstage, you know, as the nicest song she ever wrote about me *laughs* which is, you know, it may very well be true. Certainly, when that was written, um, our whole set of experiences lay before us and so, you know, we, she, I think it was written after the Buckingham Nicks album in that period of time before we connected up with Fleetwood Mac. She thinks it's a little earlier. Either way, you know, it's a very loving song, it celebrates the idea of the two of us and what that cocktail is when the two of use get together. But, um, yes, it's one of those things that fell by the wayside. It probably would've gone on that second Buckingham Nicks album had we done that. And then the demo of it just kind of lay fallow for years and then I believe it turned it somehow, as things tend to do, on YouTube or somewhere on the internet. And that's how Stevie became aware of it again because I think she'd forgotten about it and she mentioned it to me. And of course I remembered it perfectly and it's one of those things that, it just goes back to, you know, an early, early time and you just don't forget about it and it was a perfect contribution from her for this EP.

B: You mentioned yourself the Buckingham Nicks album. It's funny, I've asked you about it a couple of times and I've asked Stevie about it a couple of times regarding the re-release of the album. And when I ask one of you, you say 'ask the other one' so *Lindsey laughs* are we ever going to see an official re-release of the Buckingham Nicks album which is legendary in status?

L: Well, yeah, I think, you know, that's the irony. Part of the fact that it's legendary is that it's somewhat elusive. And yes, I think there will be a re-release of that on CD officially. Uh, you know, I feel it coming soon, you know. I mean, a lot of what's interesting about Stevie and me is we have our solo work that we do and then we come together in Fleetwood Mac and there are still chapters to be written about Stevie and me after all this time. I mean, it's hard to fathom how that could really be, that we would still be evolving, but that seems to be the case and I think that's one reason it's taken so long for us to come together for figuring out when's a good time to re-release that. Because we are sort of playing hide and see with each other, you know.

B: Well, I know that I have to let you go because you have a tight schedule but you're always fascinating to talk with. The Extended Play EP is out -

L: It's actually called Extended Play. We were just going to call it EP but then we thought the words Extended Play have a certain resonance. You can take it more as, you know, the idea of a play that has these three or four acts which would apply to this group or to Stevie and myself. There's lots of ways you can look at that so we jus left it at that.

B: I like the depth of meaning there. I like it a lot.

L: Yeah, absolutely.

*saying goodbye*

The bolded part really resonated with me. I feel sorry for Stevie. She loves music, loves her job, loves the privilege of being able to connect with her audience, does lots of charity work, supports her fans. For feck's sake she is the most hardworking of the quartet that is Fleetwood Mac in 2013. And she has had to suffer through so much crap just because apparently she's a flake or a princess or whatever and IT's NOT true. She is a mature, seasoned professional musician. That's right, Lindsey. Stevie Nicks is NOT just "a great singer" [Lindsey commented in an interview: "We're a band of three musicians and a great singer."]

Look, yes, Stevie only plays the piano, keyboards and tambourine/percussion to an intermediate level. She's not a virtuoso musician like Lindsey or Mick or John. So what? She has better creative vision than Mick or John and her songs are equally as enjoyable if not better than Lindsey's [on average].

So that's the end of my rant. Why is it okay for the three boys/men to whinge, bitch, complain etc but when a woman stands up for herself and creates great music and works her butt off she never gets any credit? Just quietly I'm a man, but I think women as people deserve equal recognition for their work when it is of quality.

Lindsey is an excellent guitarist. I love You Do or You Don't, Bleed to Love Her, Steal Your Heart Away, Trouble, End of Time, Stars are Crazy...and many others. Miss Fantasy is my favourite song of 2013. It tells a great albeit only somewhat true/half true STORY, that song does. Lyrically AND musically.

But...give this great, generous woman called Stephanie Lynn Nicks credit for her work. Not just credit in $$$ but credit in recognising her as an outstanding poet and musician who gave us the music for Rhiannon. I am aware the bass line sounds awful in John's eyes. But that's life. You get paid $4 million per tour you can put up with playing crappy bass lines, you can relax and just go with the flow and enjoy it because your fans [ie: customers will thank you for it!]

And I was annoyed with John McVie when I watched the New Orleans Jazz Fest concert vid for Gypsy online. You could tell everyone else was enjoying themselves but he looked angry, frustrated or bored (or a combination of all three).

Entertainers are there to entertain. If they have fun we have fun. It's actually part of their job ...... anyways....that's enough ranting and raving.

ETA: Let us call him Mick the Dick. Affectionately. Not meanly. He says stupid offensive things without realising he's hurting people...not just Stevie....

I love Miss Fantasy, so I'm with you!

Good on you. I'm just curious to some of the other fans out there of the band. When you complain about the EP and say things like "to quote Stevie, this hurts my everything".....are you just "hurt" because you wanted a full album? Or are you hurt because you genuinely believe that the songs on Extended Play suck?

I know personally, it sounds silly, but I was trembling with excitement when I discovered Australia was first instead of last to get Fleetwood Mac'sExtended Play on iTunes. And I downloaded it about 0930 am and wow it just blew my mind! It was not the best they had done in a long time because it was the only thing in a long time, it is actually better than some Say You Will songs. And better than Time and Behind the Mask. And better than Stevie's songs on TITN (that's a given) but even Lindsey is making music better than some TITN songs in 2013, in my eyes.

This band still holds so much potential and they consistently surprise me and I don't know why but I think four 65ish year olds on stage doing what they do, you know the whole Stevie/Lindsey comedy routine, the whole play on their relationship making it seem more sexual than it actually is (because in real life, they probably do not have sex at all, let's be honest here, and Linds does not smell Stevie's hair when he's offstage I hope)...it's just so sweet and funny. And Mick loves playing the drums. Even John just loves playing, he's quiet - likes his life kept private and that's his right...but he just loves playing bass. They are all doing what they love. Their passions.

I just get annoyed when people purport to be fans of a music ensemble, group or band and then bag them...it feels disingenous.

New Fleetwood Mac Album Up to Stevie Nicks

Russell Hall 09.25.2013,

http://www2.gibson.com/News-Lifestyle/News/en-us/New-Fleetwood-Mac-Album-Up-to-Stevie-Nicks.aspx

In a just-published interview with M Music & Musicians, Lindsey Buckingham said, “The way we do things in Fleetwood Mac is always a political mine field. If it’s not Stevie, it’s me—someone is always causing trouble. [laughs] I know Warner Brothers is dying to get an album from us, even though we’re not signed to them anymore. Stevie needs to come to the table with some material. In order to contemplate a new album, she has to want to do it.”

Buckingham went on to say that Nicks’ positive experience making In Your Dreams, her 2012 solo album, complicates the prospects for a new Fleetwood Mac LP. “She had a wonderful experience making that album,” he says. “She hasn’t said this—this is just me—but knowing Stevie, she’s probably thinking, ‘If I have to write five new songs, do I want to give them to Fleetwood Mac?’ And that’s fair enough. I think she’s feeling a bit protective and territorial about the experience she had doing her solo project. And I can totally relate to that.”

Fleetwood Mac is currently on the European leg of their 2013 tour.

Simple solution to that problem that is easy to say, but not to do: Get Christine to record, don't pressure her to tour, let her decide. And Stevie will drop everything.

I think it is fair to say that more people would hear her new songs if they were presented on a FM album over another solo disc.

There's HUGE Fleetwood Mac hype lately, certainly over here in the UK anyway. The whole UK tour sold out in 15 minutes (which didn't happen with Unleashed), the Rumours reissue shot up to #3 in the album charts, "Everywhere" entered the charts at #15 following an ad campaign by 02, "Don't Stop" charted again recently following a cover on a different ad campaign and the EP did pretty well too. I'm not sure why the sudden surge in interest, but they're massive again here.

There seems to be new respect and appreciation for all things Mac related. Some music magazine, I can't remember which, recently gave away a Rumours tribute album with songs performed by up and coming indie bands and artists so I think that generated a lot of hype too.

Regardless of what Stevie thinks about 300,000 album sales being low, there's still money to be made in a new release from Fleetwood Mac. Especially if Christine were to come on board just for the studio. Stevie and Lindsey have both said how much fun they had cutting the new tracks for the EP, so maybe Chris could sign on to do the album but not tour, or just appear at the UK shows as a guest appearance - don't know about anyone else, but I'd certainly be happy with that.

I would love a new Fleetwood Mac album, with or without Christine.

I was actually thinking that a new album would be the perfect time for some more reissues. For example, a Mirage reissue, and a SYW vinyl release could happen at the same time as a new album, each promoting sales of the others.

The early 2013 Rumours reissue would have been the best time for other reissues...

Preferably with her, but I'll tune in without.

Agreed. A Mirage/Tango reissue is long overdue (also remasters of 1971-1974 albums, but that's another can of worms).

Mick was asked about the reissues of Mirage and Tango at the M&G yesterday. He said he thought Warner Bros were already on with it, but that the band themselves had very little involvement in it.

He also said that the reason that an album didn't happen after Unleashed, was because Mick only quit drinking in 2011 and was still a heavy drinker in 09 and Stevie and Lindsey didn't want to work with him if he was drunk all the time.

Not sure what truth is in the above, but that's what Mick said.

Thank you for your honesty Lindsey!!!!!!!!!

Is Glastonbury slumming it? Don't the biggest acts play it? Just from reading about it for the last few years, I got the impression it was a badge of honor even, if you were one of the main headliners, the last act with the most stage time.

Oh well, as a fan I want nothing to do with festivals. As much as I want the complete video from the US Festival, I wouldn't have wanted to be in attendance.

I think Lindsey is right. I think it's down to Stevie now. Also explains the lack of new material offered by Stevie for the EP. But back in 09, it was down to Mick. And then Stevie went off and recorded In Your Dreams which was such an amazing experience for her.

Didn't Stevie say in one of the IYD interviews that she would only come back on board and do a Fleetwood Mac album if it was fun and didn't want to spend a year trapped in a house at eachothers throats again? Not the exact quote, but I'm sure it was something along those lines.

Michele, I think the thing with Glastonbury is that it's so huge, you can't just drop a quick festival date into your tour schedule with it, you have to specifically be around just for Glastonbury. A lot of artists have said that over the years. On the day, it's also been reported over the years to not exactly be a relaxed affair backstage, all very busy and rushing around and lots of last minute changes when things run over etc. So it's kinda rough going at times.

But you're right. Glastonbury IS an honor. Because you won't get invited to Glastonbury for being just anybody. It's the biggest of the big. It's huge over here and the whole thing is broadcast on BBC. It's like the music equivalent of Wimbledon.

so that makes it clear then. FM will not perform as a band next year. after Vegas, they are done with this tour.

Mick said in the IYD screening interview 10 days ago that boys are hoping to do Glastonbury and some more interesting countries in Europe they hadn't done before. that they are trying to butter SN up by offering Italy as one of those countries. guess it didn't work.

i'm not sure this was honesty. to me this looks like continuing escalation of his efforts to try to get Nicks on board for finishing FM album they were working on. guess it didn't work too well in person, so he's trying some public pressure. he did yes. he was saying boys want to tour Europe some more in 2014, and are trying to get Stevie on board. Mick's comment just yesterday, 2 weeks after the one you are referring to, might mean Stevie decided she didn't want to do it in the meantime. Glasto 2014 tix are going on sale, they probably want to have their main acts lined up pretty soon.

Reading this bit in light of Stevie's comments to Mojo, it seems Lindsey and Stevie are playing political games with one another and using the press as the means for leverage with the public. Lindsey says a new studio album is up to Stevie. Stevie says Lindsey didn't want Christine on stage for more than one song. Stevie would love to do a new Mac album if Christine was on board. Christine would be game if she didn't have to tour. Lindsey appears to want a 100 percent commitment from her or nothing. Stevie meanwhile doesn't appear to want to work with Lindsey on her new songs without some buffer or protection.

They are both painting the other one as tearing at the fabric of the band.

I hope there are little talks to Christine to step out of retirement and just to record with FM as a 5 unit band again.

So its up to Stevie to be the boss to decide to record.

Stevie was so enamored with the process of recording with Dave Stewart that she wants to re-create that experience with another solo project. She is not excited about recording with FM. I don't think Christine changes that. It is still about the battle of wills between Stevie and Lindsey.

I don't think Stevie and Lindsey would fight less if Stevie recorded with them, but I definitely think it would change Stevie's interest in recording. It would make doing so worth the battle for her. Also, she'd feel locked in in a way she doesn't now. It's like in 1977 when she says that despite the separations, no one was about to leave the band. It would be the same way if Christine recorded, Stevie wouldn't think of not doing it.

Doesn't mean things would go smoothly with Lindsey, though, but no one would walk away from the battle. Right now, she's willing just to avoid it altogether and say, "life is too short." And I don't think she's wrong. If she doesn't want to record with him that's fine. Christine is another possible option to get an FM album recorded though. Michele

Actually Mick and John are probably the biggest money whores (Mick, especially) among them for the simple reason that they don't write songs. And that just reminded me of a quote from Christine (according to Ken Caillat) - "I'm not too old to tour, just too rich!"

Even if Stevie says that's how she sees it, I think the reality of Christine's participation, which seems like a "when pigs fly" kind of thing would change her mind quickly. Even if no one asked her, she would want to be in on the recording for the historic significance, if nothing else. That's the payoff that money can't buy. Leave her alone and she'll come home wagging her tail behind her.

But if it would NOT change her mind, that's just fine too. Obviously, Lindsey wants to do an album with Stevie above all else. But half a loaf is better than none. I would love to have a Christine, Lindsey, John and Mick album as a fan. Even if that's not Lindsey's first choice, under the FM banner, it would get his music more attention than a solo album would.

Would the fans be as interested without Stevie? No, but there would be a lot of interest none-the-less, especially since Christine has been gone for so long. That would generate a great deal of automatic PR for the project. I think the pairing could be as good if not greater than SYW was, based on some of the things Chris and Lindsey have done on their own respectively. Meanwhile, Stevie could work more with Dave or pursue other solo endeavors. That would work out perfectly.

I always shake my head at these types of comments. What's so stupid about it? Clearly Christine doesn't want to tour, Lindsey doesn't want her in the band unless she commits to touring (or at all), and Stevie isn't interested in recording with FM anymore.

If Lindsey is being stupid about anything it's his insistence that there should be another album. Frankly, we don't need another SYW or Tango or Mirage. He looks back on those and criticizes them. What makes him -- or anyone for that matter -- think that a new album would break the mold somehow?

Lindsey himself doesn't even seem to realize what he is pushing for. By writing and recording songs that he considers "Fleetwood Mac" songs, as opposed to his more daring solo stuff, he is doing exactly what he criticizes the band for doing with Mirage and Tango. The stuff was too commercial and not artistic enough. But that's the only thing he's going to get if there is another FM CD, especially judging from the less-than-stellar tracks on the EP.

I say forget it, Lindsey. You've made enough money. Focus on the solo stuff. That's what I want to hear, not this bland, poppy music that you gave us with the EP.

I agree that the bland, poppy garbage on EP was just awful. But Stevie herself lauded Seeds We Sow. And I don't see why Lindsey can't transfer that type of sound to Fleetwood Mac. His last few albums have really mastered the divide between sonic experimentation & ease of listening. There's no reason Lindsey can't find that middle ground within the confines of Fleetwood Mac.

I only listened to the EP once. Never again.

He could find that middle ground, I think. Combine that with Stevie's and Christine's (if she rejoins) material, it could prove another FM masterpiece.

If Chris is gonna be involved, I also would love her to share producing duties with Lindsey as well. She has producing experience, albeit not with The Mac, but she needs the flair Lindsey has, while she could curb Lindsey's excesses. Heck, even Stevie's producing ear is improving. Let her have some share.

The label doesn't want it, for one thing. If Lindsey gets experimental, the band will have to release the thing independently. I say good luck getting Mick, Stevie and John to agree to that.

Not going to happen.

Someone should tell those three that independent bands are going big time these days. Okay, maybe they have the whole "aging rocker" thing going against them, but they just need to make a kick-ass album, some name recognition, and it will sell itself.

I was thinking maybe just for a couple of weeks or so for some face-to-face sessions, possibly when majority of the work is already done (or maybe this could be in, say, London, or if they're all up to it, Hawaii). The rest of the time, there's always the Internet so Lindsey can have time with his family and Christine does not have to leave her house. When there's a will, there's a way.

I can definitely understand WB wanting a Mac album, in theory, because dinosaurs though FM may (or may not, but let's say they are) be, dinosaurs have lots of accumulated fans. Another Rumours will never happen but that's always been an unrealistic expectation. It'd probably do well enough upon initial release, so while I doubt WB is pining over it I can certainly understand them preferring one over not.

I don't read much into who is playing what games with whom ... the point is that everyone wants different things and has different conditions. I dunno, I don't think the press/world at large cares enough to be a useful tool for either Stevie or Lindsey. Except as a tool for venting.

(And this is by the by but personally I've always wondered what a Stevie and Chris album would be like since we've seen the other songwriter combinations before. Please don't take this as a "I secretly want Lindsey outta there" message because it so isn't and I don't have the time to deal.)

NO ONE is wanting a new album, IMO, because albums(unless the artist is CURRENTLY huge, and not a catalog act) no longer sell. Hell, look at SYW. haha I totally agree with you...Say You Will was an awesome CD IMO but it didn't seem to sell that well....the only people interested in buying a new Mac album at this point are probably people who are actual fans. However, the Tour is where they are making huge money, so I'm not sure if they even care how the album sells. A new album means another tour, which hopefully they will all be on board with if they stay healthy. This tour seemed to be huge, so all those people that went this year will hopefully be happy to hear new music. I would love a new album...but regardless of if they do one, I pray they at least tour one more time

Say You Will was the first Fleetwood Mac studio album to peak in the top 3 in the US since 1982's Mirage.[3] The album debuted at No. 3 with sales of 218,000 and was certified Gold by the RIAA in July 2003 for 500,000 copies shipped in the US.[4] It has also been certified Gold in the UK for 100,000 copies shipped. Did they play anything from it on the 2009 tour? At least Peacekeeper maybe?

Even the new EP singles (which I think was a good idea)...I feel like we won't be hearing those again unless they ended up on a new album. Without You at least has the historical connotation, but after 50 shows of a ten minute intro to it I don't know what FM can really do with it for the future.

Interesting that SYW didn't even sell 1 mill! I always thought it sold at least that! Its a really good album, but it had also been about 16 years since FM had any new music (because do we really even count the albums from the early 90s). So I think that factor might have had a lot to do with it to.

Yeah, they played them when they were new. But I mean, they DID get some decent airplay, so why did they choose to leave them in the dust, for the past few tours?

I don't have the EP, but even my Ledgie fans, who love them minus Christine, have told me not to bother, that the EP sucks.

LB solo played Come on 2 of his last 3 tours as a regular part of his set, and Bleed To Love Her was also on his One Man Show setlist. but i'm with you and everyone who says they should play more SYW songs. i would love to hear Destiny Rules, as long as that guitar outro is there (i wouldn't want guitar parts half-gutted like they did with SOTM on this tour).

I think if Christine offered a full-on return to the band, I seriously doubt any of them would think twice about album sales. I think Mick, John, Lindsey, and Stevie would just be overjoyed to work with their old friend again, that they'd probably gladly lose money on a project. Not to mention, I think they'd all like the symmetry of closing out the band's recording days with Chris. Chris' return would pretty much guarantee a worldwide sellout tour to offset any album losses, too. They could all go out on top.

"Bob Welch saved Fleetwood Mac" - Dick Fleetwood

Who is "they," and what did "they" do to rewrite Mac history?

Whenever Bob is brought up, Mick has nothing but glowing things to say about him. John just doesn't say much of anything about anyone, and Christine has retired.

If you mean the Welch era albums being tough to find in a retail setting these days, even Stevie Nicks' solo albums have all gone Out Of Print, not to mention her worst selling album of the '80s probably sold more than all the Welch Era Mac albums combined. So there's nothing subversive about Welch era Mac material being hard to come by. It's economics.

I will concede that it would have been nice for Fleetwood Mac to acknowledge Bob's legacy by performing Hypnotized this past tour. However, we may not have all the facts about that. We know Bob sued the band back in the '90s over royalties. Perhaps part of the settlement was that Fleetwood Mac had no permission to perform his songs onstage?

If Mick has nothing but glowing things to say about Bob, then he should do the right thing, and attempt to get Bob inducted to RRHOF with FM.

Bob saved FM, during some very tough times. If it weren't for him getting them to move to the U.S., we can pretty much be guaranteed that none of would be here, typing any of these words. The FM that we all love, would've most likely ceased to exist. Stevie WHO? Well, I guess that might be a blessing, in and of itself!;)

And I also think that Billy should be inducted too. But for me, the difference is in the state of the band they were in. Bob dragged them through the hard times. Billy joined one of the biggest bands in the world. And mostly to just sing Lindsey's songs! That's a huge difference in my book.

I don't think the RR HOF really matters, but to me, it had two decisions: 1) induct every member of Fleetwood Mac ever or 2) induct those from the PG line-up and the Rumours line-up. They chose 2. I understand why--even though it's not the choice I would have made.

If BW were to be inducted, it would have to now be on his own merits as both a solo artist and member of FM.

A few things I have not seen mentioned is this. 1) Lindsey has no contract with WB (or anyone for that matter) so all the music he's put out in the last few years have been at his own expense (Seeds We Sow, Songs from the Small Machine). While Lindsey seems to have made (or kept) a large part of his earnings; the fact that he has had to pay for everything out of his own pocket for his last few tours (and not WB) I'm sure makes a definite difference to him. Also, it doesn't seem any record companies are looking at giving Lindsey a solo contract anytime soon (this has nothing to do with the quality of his work, just the fact that music companies are now only offering contracts to artist that they believe will turn a profit, and I think Lindsey himself has admitted that his solo work is not very profitable).

Which is why I believe Seeds We Sow and Song's from the Small Machine, are a departure from Lindsey's usual esoteric sound, because he's going more mainstream to try and make some of his money back. Also, he has said that he's done various different types of esoteric techniques /music/songs in the past and doesn't feel like he has to revisit that again.

I happen to like both of SWS and SFSM, but I know a lot of die hard Lindsey fans aren't really into them because the sound is more main stream.....Hold up..I just realized I got off track ...... what I started to say was 1) I think the reason Lindsey wants to do a new FM CD so badly is that he can make a heck of a lot more money with FM, than he can without FM. 2) I think Lindsey has said in the past (and Stevie had repeated this thought throughout the whole 2013 tour) that both Lindsey and Stevie believe they are better musically together, than separate (however, this is obvious a belief not shared by all of their fans). (IMO) I believe that Lindsey is hoping that now that he and Stevie are finally getting along they maybe able to create new music that is on the same level or close to the original Buckingham/Nicks album (though judging from the new EP that may not be possible again) and I actually like a few songs from the new EP unlike a lot of members on this board.

And don't think Lindsey's not (at least musically) jealous of Stevie's new found love and partnership with Dave Stewart. Lindsey believes he's the only one that musically knows what to do with Stevie's songs. Yes, she's had a multitude of producers over the years and many, many hits, but Lindsey still seem to think that he's the one that makes her music sound best (he said so during the FM behind the music). With Lindsey ego I can see him trying to bring Stevie back to FM to show her that 1) he can produce her song's better than Dave and 2) that they can work together again and the atmosphere doesn't have to be tense, with multiple arguments throughout the recording process. Stevie did say that during the 4 days they worked on the EP she and Lindsey had a good time talking and taking pictures of themselves in different costumes (and I would pay a large sum of money to see those pictures too). No, I can't see Lindsey ever donning a top hat and cape or bringing Stevie owl's and a white horses, but I think he's at least willing to try and be more easy going, and open and to try to make the whole process more enjoyable overall. The selling point I think would be that a new FM CD would be more profitable for Stevie, than a solo CD.

All of this is why I believe he's NOT pursing Chris as much (or at all) like a lot of the fans would like, even though it seems that if Chris was willing to re-join the band as a full member,he would be OK, maybe even happy to have her back.

But the natural course of most conversations, is that it takes twists and turns. Are we really not allowed to do that?

That's just it, carpet bombing every Ledge forum with Bob Welch Rock Hall Of Fame threads & posts is hardly natural conversation. It's planned & calculated. I totally agree with y'all's aims, just not your execution.

I agree with much of what you said, I just don't get how it relates to Christine? Are you insinuating Lindsey is pushing for another Mac album to reconcile personally with Stevie?

I do wonder if that's important to him or not. Perhaps I'm just jaded, but I simply view Lindsey's involvement in Fleetwood Mac the past 15 years as a way to underwrite his solo career. Fleetwood Mac pays the bills, elevates his fame, and allows his solo career to continue. The only reason I can fathom that he's written Christine off so fully, and has erected obstacles preventing her partial return, is that he doesn't want to give up that cut of touring revenue & setlist/stage time. I hope I'm totally offbase on this, though.

Wow, do fans really feel SWS sounds more mainstream? To my ears it's as idiosyncratic as anything he's done. If any of his recent solo albums sounds like an attempt to be commercial, it's GOS, in my opinion. And SFTSM, well, it was just a document of the tour.

I still find myself listening to SWS a heck of lot. If I had to rank Lindsey's solo studio albums in order of preference, it would probably be OOTC, then SWS, then GOS, then L&O, then UTS, then GI.

Of course conversations can take twists and turns. However, when the conversation devolves from the original topic into an unrelated issue that already has several threads (in the appropriate forum) dedicated to its discussion, those threads are where said conversation is best further conducted - in the interest of keeping the boards/threads/forums organized and on topic as much as possible.

Which is exactly why that last post needs to be removed from the BN anniversary thread. That is not a thread about the hypothetical release & there are tons of those threads.

not sure. seems everyone has different opinion.

one thing people seem to agree on is that SWS is more cohesive and less polished (in some aspects, although definitely not in voice manipulations, unfortunately) than many of his other albums.

SWS represents a sampling of a lot of different styles Lindsey has been developing throughout his career, and it's my favorite LB album, by far.

also agree about the Songs from the Small Machine - it's just a concert recording, of a show where 6 completely new never before heard songs were debuted, 5 months before they were released. i still get goosebumps remembering the feeling of hearing those songs for the very first time, at Saban.

Though I'm sure many would label me a chiffonhead, I'm a HUGE connoisseur of Lindsey's solo career as well. Honestly, the last truly "out there" album Lindsey made was Go Insane. All his work since has it's share of sonic experimentation for sure, but is nowhere near as esoteric as his first 2 albums. I would even argue Say You Will has edgier material on it than some of Lindsey's 21st century solo albums. I don't think this amounts to Lindsey selling his soul at all. I just truly think his music isn't so manic these days because he is finally secure with himself as an artist, and that manifests itself in his music.

If he wanted to protect the touring cut then he would be pushing a partial return that would not require her to tour. The position that she has to be in or out will actually put her back on stage with them.

Well I guess in a round about way, I was trying to explain why I think Lindsey's not pushing for Chris to return to FM (though behind the scenes who knows what's going on) also the post I was responding to was saying Lindsey should just continue with his solo work and asking why Lindsey even wanted a new FM CD and that's mainly what I was talking about.

No I'm not insinuating Lindsey is pushing for another Mac album to reconcile personally with Stevie... I'm flat out saying HE IS :lol: (NO, NO, before everyone starts bombing me with hateful post I'M JOKING ;))

I don't think him wanting Stevie for a new FM CD is for personal reasons, I think he's always been vocal about how good he thought and still thinks their Buckingham-Nicks duo was (Stevie also agrees with this). For decades they have been duking it out over their music and I think Lindsey may believe that now that he and Stevie are starting re-develop their old Buckingham-Nicks bond, that they very well could create some incredible new music together and that's what he's really excited about.

I probably said this 100 times .I like to add what radio station will play their new music.

Radio did a great job on round filing Stevie's IYD CD and the tunes from the FM EP.

How good is new music if they cant get to promote the new tunes for a new recording.

Peace Keeper and SYW did great with airplay in 2003.

The only station probably would play the FM new tunes are Classic Rock ,Rock, Light rock and River formatted stations.

Look on the other hand and they just record the songs just for us hardcore fans and now I feel honored .

Thank You Stevie ,Lindsey,Mick and John.

Hey.. Don't get upset. The title of this thread is LB says Warner Bros, Wants a new Album and I thought we are discussing all aspects of a possible new FM CD. Such as should FM record a new CD or not, and also why is Lindsey pushing so hard for Stevie to return etc... My post does talk about Stevie and Lindsey, but primarily because Stevie is holding up a new CD and some posters were saying they didn't understand why Lindsey didn't just try harder to get Chris to record a new FM CD and let Stevie go off and continue with her solo work.

So, I think my post was actually on topic and should not be moved to the BN thread.

Hey it was 12:30am when I wrote that post, so I may have not worded it exactly right. To me mainstream and commercial are interchangeable. But I can see that not everyone think the same way. So I will clarify that I think that on SWS and SFSM Lindsey tried to make the music less esoteric so he could sell more downloads/songs (I'm not even sure what to call it anymore) and make some of his money back.

Also I love SWS and SFSM so I'm happy with his current work, regardless of his reason why. (Ok, this post maybe off topic, but I'm responding to a question so I think I should get a break here)

I am a pretty big fan of Say You Will and hate it didn't sell as well. I do wish, however, that Christine had been a full part of it. If so, Say You Will would have exploded.

Not in order (although I should,) these are the songs that should've been on SYW, combined with works from In The Meantime:

What's The World Coming To
Friend
Thrown Down
Calumny
Say You Will
So Sincere
Peacekeeper
Steal Your Heart Away
Bleed To Love Her
Destiny Rules
Silver Girl
Sweet Revenge or Forgiveness

I really enjoy "Running Through The Garden" and "Everybody Finds Out," but didn't have them as Stevie's selections because the latter wouldn't fit, and if I'm not mistaken, Stevie's not a big fan of the former. Of course, Christine's songs would have Lindsey's touch on them, so probably improving the guitar work, and adding the classic harmonies between the three. I also imagine that other songs would have come about, but since that's even more speculation, I won't go there.

I don't know if this collection of 12 would be the perfect first studio album with the Rumours lineup since Tango In The Night, but it would've been a big seller.

And that being said, I would think that Lindsey would *crave* a new FM album, especially if it is about money and staying relevant. He's fully aware of the band's recognition, and an album (especially with Christine) would keep that going. But I would think it'd have to be soon...From listening to Christine's most recent performances (in Hawaii and London,) she may have been a bit rusty/her range is diminishing? She is my favorite, no doubt, and it makes me so happy the reunion happened, but it was something I observed through the videos.

But.

Considering I love, love, love her blues vocals, I would be totally fine with that too.

Well, if you haven't performed for so many years, you are bound to be rusty.

I think she sounds really good, considering her age and her vices, especially the smoking. Sure, her vocal range has indeed diminished, but whatever she still had still sounded wonderful and her playing is as sharp as ever. With writing, singing and playing, she'll be back into shape in no time.

And I'm also inclined to think that with this news about John, they would really scramble to get at least one more album going (including Christine, perhaps especially her) once John's cancer goes into remission, plus settle any other unfinished businesses (of which they have many, I'm sure) they would have.

New Fleetwood Mac Album Up to Stevie Nicks

Russell Hall 09.25.2013,

In a just-published interview with M Music & Musicians, Lindsey Buckingham said,

full M Music and Musicians interview is available now:

FLEETWOOD MAC

These days the road has never been smoother for the Hall of Fame rockers

Fleetwood Mac has been virtually synonymous with two things—classic songs and internal drama. Both aspects were epitomized on the group’s 1977 multiplatinum album Rumours, but only recently has their legendary volatility been stripped away.

“If you go back to 2003, when we were coming off the making of Say You Will, there was still a bit of tension between Stevie and me,” says Lindsey Buckingham of his Fleetwood Mac foil, singer-songwriter Stevie Nicks.
“That polarity worked onstage and made for an interesting show. By 2009 when we toured again that tension had sort of been neutralized. Now it’s swung completely the other way—we’re getting along great.”

That camaraderie has been playing out to perfection on tour and in the studio. Prior to hitting the road, Buckingham, Nicks, Mick Fleetwood and John McVie (Christine McVie left the band in 1998) cut eight songs with producer Mitchell Froom. Four of those tunes—three by Buckingham, one by Nicks—were compiled onto an EP titled Extended Play. “I thought it would be great to cut some new stuff,” says Buckingham. “It was a great experience.”

Meanwhile Fleetwood Mac’s shows are drawing more fans than at any time since the early 1980s. “I take that as evidence people not only have a renewed appreciation of what we’ve done,” says Buckingham, “but also that they’re fully accepting of the band in its present incarnation.” In a candid conversation, Buckingham delves into the band’s inner dynamic and the future of Fleetwood Mac.

How did you write for the EP?

The way I write for the band has cross-pollinated with how I write as a solo artist. With solo work you could make an analogy to painting, where you’re sitting one-on-one with a canvas. Writing for the band, especially in the old days, was more like moviemaking—you bring in a song the same way you have a script before you start rolling cameras. Over the years those two ways of working have entered the same arena for me. What defines a song as a Fleetwood Mac song isn’t so much the song as it is simply having John and Mick on it. They put a stamp on the song that’s quite individual and distinctive.

And Stevie?

Stevie writes lyrics and then puts them away. Later she’ll pull them out and begin trying to attach melodies. It’s a slightly less free-associative thing compared to the way I do it. What makes the whole thing work is that her process and her style don’t necessarily fit with mine. You could make that case about Fleetwood Mac. The members don’t necessarily belong together—but it’s the synergy of these things that makes it work.
Why bring in an outside producer?
I produced Say You Will, and it created a certain tension with Stevie. Her perception of that album was fairly negative, and she wasn’t happy with me when we got to the end of that process. I didn’t want to put myself in that position again. I wanted someone with the ability to mediate the situation.

What’s touring like now?

It’s great. We take these breaks, and everyone’s individual lives wind their way down the road, and when we come back together the equation is slightly different every time. When you’ve been doing this for a while, the perception from the audience shifts a bit. Both those things have changed for the better on this tour. It’s sort of a lovefest onstage now. Plus, in the past three years, the crowd’s appreciation of the body of work seems to have ramped up. And the audiences are skewing younger.

What’s changed without Christine?

The way things evolved when we got with Mitchell Froom wasn’t significantly different from when Christine was there. When Christine left, what it did for me, ironically, was allow me to be more of who I am, which is kinetic and connected to the physical and emotional side of what I’m doing onstage. When Christine left, suddenly we were dividing the material more or less down the middle. That gave me the impetus to explore things—guitar pieces and so forth. Having two writers has allowed me to grow a lot within the context of Fleetwood Mac.

Any lessons learned over the years?

There was a point at which the success of Rumours became not about the music, but about success itself. At that point you’re not only functioning in something like a tabloid world, you’re functioning in an area that has a danger of eating you up and encouraging you to lose the sense of who you are and why you’re doing what you’re doing. There’s an axiom in the business that more or less says, “If something works, run it into the ground and then move on.” But what we did in the post-Rumours environment was to make the Tusk album. That was my brainchild—I’ll take the credit or the blame. That album confounded everyone’s expectations, but it also represented a choice toward risk-taking, a choice to take the high road in terms of why you’re doing something.

Is a full-length album expected soon?

The way we do things in Fleetwood Mac is always a political minefield. If it’s not Stevie, it’s me—someone is always causing trouble. [laughs] I know Warner Brothers is dying to get an album from us, even though we’re not signed to them anymore. Stevie needs to come to the table with some material. She has one song on the EP, but it’s not a new song. In order to contemplate a new album, Stevie has to want to do it. We’ve talked about it in general terms and decided we would just go out on the road and do this. When this year is done, we’ll have to figure out our 2014.

Does Stevie have reservations?

It’s a little complicated for her. She’s coming off the project with Dave Stewart a couple of years ago. She had a wonderful experience making that album. She watched me take three years off to do Under the Skin and Gift of Screws, and she’s seen how that helped me grow. Plus, she doesn’t just toss songs off the way I do. She hasn’t said this—this is just me—but knowing Stevie, she’s probably thinking, “If I have to write five new songs, do I want to give them to Fleetwood Mac?” And that’s fair enough. I think she’s feeling a bit protective and territorial about the experience she had doing her solo project. And I can totally relate to that. But at some point we have to be a band and we have to make commitments. I think the key with Stevie is not to push her too much. She doesn’t want to feel she’s backed into a corner.

Are you optimistic about the band?

Absolutely. I don’t know how you could not be, when you look at the business we’re doing, the reception we’re getting, and how well we’re playing. There seems to be something afoot that’s quite remarkable this time around. It would be a shame not to play that out. There are a lot of things we could do next year—an album or more touring. This band has a great history. It’s worth dignifying.

Lindsey is, to say the least, and interesting fellow. I would have preferred him and Stevie continue cranking out albums as the principal writers of Fleetwood Mac than going and doing solo albums. I feel like, while he knows FM is a cash cow, he has a pretty big ego, and feels the need to have full artistic control. And that's fair - as a musician, I've done that too. But I think it would've been more constructive if this interview had been done with Stevie, Mick, and John in the room.

They should be working on remastering their catalogue before writing and recording a new album (and I mean the whole catalogue from 1970's Kiln House to 1990's Behind The Mask). I realise that 1969's Then Play On has already been done, and so has the early albums that Sony Music own now (the CBS albums).

So what is the reason Steves & Chris didn't really work together??? Lindsey+Chris/ Lindsey+Stevie/ but no Stevie + Chris...Did LB not want "the girls" ganging up on him??? Or was it just his control freak attitude...

Well, they did, just as much as Stevie worked everyone in FM, I think... They didn't write songs together, but Stevie didn't write songs with anyone (as we've heard ad nauseum for the past several years). Chris does play on some of Stevie's demos, but I think in general, Stevie just tended to write her songs by herself or at home or whatever and then hand them off to the band later to work on the arrangement.

I doubt Lindsey has anything to do with it at all. I don't see why he would, nor do I see that this is actually an issue with any true cause or explanation.

They sung together all of the time. They probably didn't sing more duets, because usually a male/female contrast works better on songs, if you have both sexes in your band.

How exactly were they going to write together? Have Christine write music for Stevie's lyrics when she's not even into those types of words?? I don't get the impression that Stevie's demos inspired Christine to write anything (i.e. her description of Dreams as bland or comment that many of Stevie's songs were rubbish, even though the words sounded great together, even if she think they made sense) and she says she only wrote when she was needed anyway. No one ever needed her to write on Stevie's stuff. Christine added her keyboard part and arrangements to Stevie's songs and Stevie has said she contributed a line (Oh Daddy) or made Lindsey sing back up with her on some of Christine's songs. She couldn't add to Christine's songs musically. That's about all the collaboration they were capable of, given their different talents.

I had far off nosebleeds for the first Tango/Billy show, and it took me half the show(hey, I was very young!) to figure out that it wasn't Lindsey. The look was so similar....

Lindsey was much more feminine in his younger days than he is now. But he was pretty girly. I didn't hold it against him. I didn't think he was less attractive.

Also creatively a song like Hold Me sounds fairly feminine and more so because of Lindsey than otherwise.

I once told a joke, "from a scale of Christine McVie to Lindsey Buckingham, how masculine or feminine are you?"

I'll bet Christine could kick his ass!

I love that scale!

Although I'm amused by the scale of "Christine to Lindsey," I really find the discussion of Lindsey's masculinity/femininity/lack thereof a rather unnecessary conversation based on gender stereotypes. Lindsey's Lindsey.

I do not, however, like his "Eraserhead" look either.

I think we are entering an era where the conversation won't come up as often and it wouldn't have come up now if Lindsey hadn't been running hither and yon saying how much more testosterone they have with Christine gone.

If I were him, I wouldn't talk a lot about masculinity, but ... he did.

A couple of weeks ago, my mother called me after Fashion Police and asked me if Magic Johnson's offspring was a woman who transgendered into a man or a man who had transgendered into a woman. I said, "I don't think he's transgender, actually." But I think we are going to a place where the "Pat" skit on SNL will have no relevance a few years from now.

WB may be more generous with FM in terms of studio time and promotion than they were with Stevie but FM won't get anywhere near the support that the young trendy pop stars get...

Sad Angel is a must. And I really love It Takes Time - that really should be on there too.

Yes, that might work. *crosses fingers*

I don't know what Stevie's attitude to an album would be. Would she write something new for it, as she did with SYW, in addition to bringing in existing demos or superfluous material from IYD? I still sense a reluctance to re-enter the studio with FM, though I'd hope Christine's potential involvement might change that.

On the Christine front, presumably before she sets foot in the studio they need to get her to agree to tour. I'm sure now that, with her recent re-emergence into public and musical life, this won't be as hard as before, but would they - do you think - make her commit to a world tour? Surely they don't necessarily want to suffer the blow which they endured in 97/98 when they only got the income from 40 dates and then had to reinvent themselves when Christine left.

My guess is she probably would write something new as she has songs but might begin to feel self-conscious about them not being fresh. So, she'd write new stuff, but she did 4 songs for SYW in like a month.

She might still be reluctant, but she can work with Dave or someone else if she wants. I think not being represented on the album or only having old songs on the album would be less desirable to her than the reluctance about recording with FM.

I definitely think Stevie would offer Fleetwood Mac a mix of a few newly-written songs and some "vaulted" ones. In the past, it's seemed very important to her that she bring something brand new to the table (even for 'The Dance'), and I can't imagine she'd feel any differently this time out.

As for her reluctance to record with Fleetwood Mac... Christine's return is a game-changer. The aspects of the whole 'Say You Will' experience that left her feeling unhappy, wouldn't be in play with Christine on board.

I have been closely following this band and it's various solo projects for the better part of 35 years. When it comes to recording production, they work very slowly. I'm going out on a limb to say THERE IS ABSOLUTLEY NO WAY THAT FLEETWOOD MAC WILL HAVE A NEW STUDIO ALBUM OUT by summer 2014. Logistically speaking, there is still too much to work through (John's continued recovery, Chris' return/touring and in what capacity, what record label, who will produce, etc...)

If, in fact, Chris has agree to do this, my realistic scenario is this:
----2014 will be spent writing, recording and securing a label deal.
----new album released Spring 2015 with tour to follow.

I had forgotten about how she supposedly wrote an album's worth of material following her Mother's passing. I'd think she would certainly bring in these songs as "new" material. No doubt, she has plenty of far more ancient stuff she'd bring to the table, too.

I agree that the Mac hasn't worked quickly in the recording studio since 1975. However, recording technology has taken a giant leap forward since the last time Fleetwood Mac recorded a full album. There are no longer tapes, tape machines, layering of different instrumental/vocal recordings, etc to worry about. Now everything is instantly recorded digitally, can be instantly played back, & is instantly configurable thanks to things like ProTools. Without You was completely recorded in what, like 2 days? Fleetwood Mac probably WILL take their time recording new work, but they don't have to.

The last time these 5 people recorded an album together was 26+ years ago. Wow. Tango in the Night was their last album, so hard to grasp.

I think Christine is in. Her voice and quotes tell me she's fine with a tour. She's tired of sitting on her bum and like MIck said, "it's not healthy".

Stevie always has material. I just hope they can all mesh their tunes to make it sound cohesive, and have a concept. Also, (and this is a big one) re-record all the material as a band. I would love for it to sound like a band and not a cut and paste job.

Anyway, just my thoughts.

exactly!! yes to all of this. it's not like they haven't put anything out lately, as a band, that hasn't been put together quickly.

the only thing that can be stopping them from putting the album together quickly is if their inter-band politics is still at the childish level it seemed to have been over the last decade (judging from DR doc and various statements). but EP and especially that fast recording of WY seems to indicate they are finally over all that now.

once they have album done they can play new songs in concert, even if the album is not officially out yet. as far as actually putting it out, i suspect they'll maybe try to go with the big record label again, and those negotiations seem to take time plus there's more boardroom politics involved than if they just put it out themselves like they did with their EP. and whoever they have as their PR etc people, those are way behind in any social media savvy, etc, if they put it out on their own. you'd think with their money and connections they can get anybody they want and hire someone who actually knows how to do this stuff, but judging by the EP that really nobody knew was out, with the only advertising being that 1 week at itunes cover page, they are not hiring the right people. which is a shame. whatever they put out doesn't have to be a smash or have huge sales, but it would be nice if people would at least hear that is out.

on the other hand, Lindsey personally telling his diehards from the stage, not in the mic but still where people upfront could clearly hear him, that they will be back in the summer was pretty savvy, no? this whole board has been buzzing about it since. WelshWitchPMD has got it on video, and it's on youtube. fans on facebook and tumblr and twitter have been buzzing about it. it's still small and limited to fans following the band, but still, obviously they can do it, sometimes - at least start to use social media power appropriately, a little bit.

See, a lot of people complain when Stevie declares her love of (insert popular song of the week here) because they think the music is bad or that the artist is a kook or whatever else.

But Stevie's smart. I don't think she's being fake - she probably really does like these people -but I do think that she knows what she's doing when she name drops them. Every time she does it gets quoted in several different publications and buzzes around on social media. By associating with contemporary acts it gets her own name out there.

I don't think they will record an album by the summer and I wouldn't want them to anyway. If they are recording as five, they need more time together, I don't care what digital technology allows them to slap together. Creatively, it takes time and time all in the same place, not emailing attachments to each other.

If they go out on tour, I don't think it's going to be behind an album. It's probably some make up junk or some big money festival offer that they couldn't refuse.

I hope the EP is not an indication of what the album will be like.i feel like the band has followed the exact same pattern twice in their careers. I would compare the dance to rumours, the bands huge commercial successes 20 years apart. Then they follow it up with an adventerous, great album. Say wha you want about 2 solo, albums, not cohesive, where's Christine, but I freaking still love say you will. I like tusk WAY more. I would take out 3 songs from each writer to make it more perfect but it's full of really incredible songs. And call in non cohesive if you must, but I think Murrow next to Illume absolutely sound like they belong on the same album together, and then to follow that up with the classic sounding thrown down is the same concept as having Sara next to wmytyto. How is it any different.

But anyways the third and most annoying part of the band repeating itself, is them being afraid of said experimental album and feeling the need to artificially manufacture their more "fleetwood Mac like" sound. I mean Lindsey basically came out and said that's what he did with his 8 songs. And without you is just Awful. The only silver lining with wy is I'll take the awful song being allowed to be on the EP since it led to the awesome intros on the tour. but just months earlier stevie recorded the wonderful you can't fix this. They wouldn't be going all mirage and try to manufacture a sound. They should just continue on whatever musical path they are going on as individuals and bring that together in fleetwood Mac and see what happens. Lindsey should be doing his one takes and illuminations and Stevie should be doing you can't fix this and moonlight level material, just getting Lindsey's spin on those. And if Christine is thrown in the mix, even better.

Well, the thing about You Can't Fix This is that Stevie didn't write the music for it. Dave Grohl did, and he said he realized when he wrote it that it sounded like an FM song which is why he never finished it (until the collab with Stevie happened). And with the whole Sound City thing being all about that whole early era with the Neve console and everything, I'm pretty sure that it was intentionally produced to sound like it could have been a 70s FM song.

So really, that's not any different from what Lindsey & company have allegedly tried to do with these new FM tracks. It's just different people doing it with varying amounts of success

I think the number of songs for any potential new Mac album will be evenly shared - I'm guessing four each. It would seem that both Lindsey and Christine have sufficient songs, but who knows what Stevie might be thinking? I wonder if she has written fully formed songs since IYD and if so, whether she intends for these to be on her next solo album? If she were to plunder the vaults, I'd be hoping for The Dealer, She Loves Him Still, All The Beautiful Worlds and China Doll. I still think they should consider recording Fireflies as a studio track - it could be amazing.

And if Christine is thrown in the mix, even better.

nice analysis . and i think your worst fears will very probably become realized.

as you mentioned, Lindsey, but also Christine, have said exactly that: they are going for the safe, classic FM sound. no experimenting. people thought that SYW had too many "weird" songs, same as Tusk, whether or not you or i think of these 2 as post-1975 FM most interesting albums.

anyway, i just want that album out, whatever it is, and to move to the next phase. they already have most of it so why not put it out? then they can make new songs, for experimental album, as FM if they are so inclined. or just use FM for safe stuff since LB may have gotten burned on FM-experimental one too many times, and do whatever else they want to do solo.

The best, most effective and memorable Mac songs, are the ones that perfectly marry radio-friendly sensibilities with quirky production touches. They don't have to do anything "experimental" at this stage (and, really, what "experiment" hasn't already been done?), they just have to concentrate on crafting good, solid songs. If they're pleased with the end results, I'm sure we will be too.

As for "Without You"... it's not horrible or awful, it just suffers from poor mixing and mastering. The song itself is solid and Stevie & Lindsey sound great. But the track is mastered way too loud (though it's not as brick-walled as "Sad Angel"), and the guitar parts are too high in the mix.

She Loves Him Still would be especially poignant now.

If this does come true, then 2014 will probably end being my favorite year for music in my life time(1995 on up). *fingers still crossed*

Late summer means late August September for me. Considering the fact that the album is already sort of started, I see no problem with them getting it done in that time frame, even if Lindsey is a perfectionist.

Ok, based on what you've said, the next album they do will be TITN and I don't have a problem with that.

That's why I hope they don't include the EP songs. If each person is going to get 4 songs, Lindsey has practically used all of his up. I don't want those EP tracks on an album. But I would like them in some hard form. So, the industry doesn't do mini-CDs anymore I guess:o .

These people still have not learned how to sell CDs at their actual CONCERT for some reason. I think they don't know that the people who attend the concert might want to own their music.

Anyway, remember when they gave away those four tracks at the concert for the SYW tour? Maybe they can do something like that again with the last EP. I don't recall what the four songs were from before: Peacekeeper, SYW, SYHA and Thrown Down maybe.

I agree about not including the EP songs on the full album. They deserve a physical release, but not like that. Perhaps they can be included on a bonus CD exclusive to Best Buy or Amazon?

Come to think of it, there was supposed to be a physical release. I wonder why it didn't happen.

Michele

Could it be as Buckingham Nicks?

Maybe they were trying to appeal to younger audience? Considering the fact that GYOW(I think) was used in Glee, Stevie on The Voice etc

Let's file the EP with Buckingham Nicks CD. They could release that as a bonus to the B/N disk.

Release The New Fleetwood Mac album with new Lindsey tunes. I would love to see another Buckingham/McVie tune. And even a, Nicks/McVie, tune would be new and super cool as well.

............. I dream...

I'd have to look that as I wayyy too young to really know who Fleetwood Mac are, but yes, that sounds like a good idea. I'd love for bands to do what Bad Company did last year. They recorded the concert, you could buy it on cd after the gig, and it would arrive at your house a few weeks later.

And I think when Best Buy, Amazon or Wal*Mart does that kind of thing that they pay for most of the cost of promoting it, so that could help FM, if they don't have a label for the EP tunes.

Even if Stevie & Christine don't write something together, I really hope we get a few instances of just their two voices harmonizing with each other. I love those moments in "Rhiannon" and "Straight Back." That should have happened more often.

I'm very disappointed in Lindsey. :( He's never fought for the legacy of SYW like he's done for Tusk.

Except for pulling heartstrings with Say Goodbye in the tour set, the rest of SYW has been abandoned by everyone in FM including the producer. Very sad. It may not be their best album to the ears of fans who miss the contributions of Christine, but it has some of the best music Stevie and Lindsey have ever made.

while i generally agree, when he introduced SG in Vegas as from SYW he paused for a sec waiting if there will be some reaction, and looked a tad disappointed when nothing happened.

also, Come and BTLH were a part of the OMS 2012 setlist.
