But before he left the band, Stevie wanted Lindsey to change her creations and pouted when he didn't.

For instance in 1997 she said,

He saw her the way she saw herself. I

well wasn't it around 98 or so that she wrote that Tom Petty knew her BETTER than she knew herself?

But then he said no, you write your songs yourself.

Also, regarding Stevie, I hope she's not the type that thinks her only great songs are the so-called hits. Sometimes people get like that....they think something's only good if it receives acclaim and success.

I would have thought she realized that long before 97, especially after all the solo success. By 97 she'd had 5 solo albums without his help. maybe she just meant specifically her mac stuff… though they weren't recording together in 97. 98 if you count The Dance recording but that's not much new stuff for her (just one song). THeir next recording together was SYW and that was 2002 they were recording…. who the hell knows with them

I don't think she felt independent with those solo albums though. I don't think she felt in charge with her early albums the way she began to with TISL.

You know that October 1997 Spin Magazine interview is the same one in which she says that she came upon Lindsey and Christine:

I also remember getting very upset with Lindsey one night when I realized that he and Christine had written "World Turning." I had been with Lindsey all those years and we had never written a song together. Plus, I walked into the studio and they were singing it together."

Tom may be Stevie's best friend, but from a listener's perspective, he needs to try to give her advice that makes better lyrics.

Yeah, that was NOT a good moment for her...

"The worst time really for me was, when we were doing that first album, was that Lindsey had been writing World Turning and I really wanted… I was his girlfriend too, you know, so you’ve got to realize that made me extra sensitive. And I really wanted to help with the song and he turned away completely and asked Chris. And that was the worst night of me being in Fleetwood Mac, because I went out to the parking lot and sat in the car and cried because I couldn’t figure out why he would tell me no and tell her yes. And it wasn’t even Christine, it was Lindsey that I was really bummed with, because I was so hurt. Then I realized as the days and weeks went on after that, that if we were going to do this, I was going to have to share him a little bit. And I was going to have to back off, because Christine certainly, of all people, didn’t want to cause any trouble between Lindsey and me. Just her as a musician and singer and a really nice lady that was becoming a friend of Lindsey’s, probably the kind of friend that I never was, nor will I ever be… he could accept her in a lot of ways that he couldn’t accept me. Because I loved her, it was alright. If I hadn’t had liked Christine, it would have been impossible. I would have had to leave, because I would have been so jealous."

Bob and Tom were part of the Travaling Wilburys.
along with Jeff Lynne,Roy Orbison and George Harrison.

Great music from great classic artists.

Also Dave Stewart was involve with them.

If they could add a gal to the band at that time .They could of got Emmylou Harris .Dolly Parton,Linda Ronstadt or even Stevie.

Lindsey could sit in and add some picking too.

It Takes Time? Really, Lindsey?

We all know if any songs from that EP get placed onto this album it'll be Without You and Sad Angel  Won't exactly be a shocker either, though I happily look forward to a day with Christine's vocals added to Sad Angel.

I didn't know that we all know that. I believe the new album will be all new songs, no re-do's of previous work. If there is ever an updated box set, those EP songs should be featured on it.

Lindsey Buckingham sheds light on Fleetwood Mac album sessions
Oct. 17, 2014

Prior to Fleetwood Mac hitting the road, Lindsey Buckingham spent time turning Christine McVie's recent piano and vocal demos into new Fleetwood Mac tracks, which will form the basis of the band's first new album with McVie in 27 years. Although Mac has released both a 2012 EP and 2003 album Say You Will in McVie absence, the fact remains that the group's last album with McVie -- 1987's Tango In The Night -- remains their biggest seller behind 1977's blockbuster, Rumours.

Buckingham spoke about the new work to The Wall Street Journal and explained how this project is different than the rest: "Christine and I were able to concentrate on each other. We were exploring some new turf. That became enlightening to me. . . We never envisioned finishing the album in the short term. We set it aside. Stevie (Nicks) will come in and participate. I have material I had been working on. There’s no danger that it will slip between the tracks. It’s too profound to."

As the two main instrumentalists for Fleetwood Mac, Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie shared a particularly unique bond -- one that was only strengthened over the years when Buckingham contributed so fiercely to the productions of her classic tracks for the band: "Christine and I, who are two musicians, who are every well grounded in their craft, have a kind of symmetry of respect and love for each other on a creative and a musical level. And I think that was a big part of that whole being greater than the sum of the parts was at that time. I could do for her -- I did for Stevie, too -- but the fact that she could fuse her sensibilities into my stuff and I could tap into what I do as a producer, say, and give back so much to her.”

Side Notes:

In May 2013 Fleetwood Mac released the Extended Play EP, featuring the first new music from the band in a decade. Three of the four tracks -- the Lindsey Buckingham-written, "Sad Angel," "It Takes Time" and "Miss Fantasy," were co produced by Buckingham and studio veteran Mitchell Froom.

The fourth track is a vintage Stevie Nicks song -- "Without You" -- which was produced by Buckingham and Nicks and is a remake of an early Buckingham Nicks track that was slotted for the duo's planned second album. The track was long forgotten by the pair until Nicks rediscovered the song via YouTube.

Fleetwood Mac's last full-length studio album, Say You Will, was released on April 15th, 2003 and peaked at Number Three on the Billboard 200 album charts.

yeah that was the interpretation many had for this particular quote around here at time when it first came out; others thought it sounds more like hope than certainty.

many have talked to Mick and several have talked to LB since; last i've heard was november. they both said she was not on board but they were really hoping she will change her mind and join them, but if not, they may have to consider some other options. and then SN interview came out where she said she doesn't know whether she will be on board for new FM album / how she will feel about it eventually.

and then there are tons of speculations and fairy tales being spun around.

I never, ever thought they'd take any intermediate down time during this tour to record. That's just not how this band rolls this day and age. They will only hit the studio once this tour is wrapped up. Any smalls breaks during the tour will be used for just that- a break from each other.

I disagree with "all the new dates add is money" premise. I think it also brings happiness to those people who have been waiting to see the FIVE in person since 1997. Sure, I want to have a new album too, but I don't begrudge anyone the opportunity of seeing them together in person. I had my chance and now I'm thrilled for Europe, Austrailia, Canada, California and anywhere else they make their stops before they press on and create a new album.

I hope this time on the road is giving them new ideas, sparking conversation, exposing them to new visions, and even allowing them to catch up. I don't see it as wasted time. I think there has been YEARS of wasted time, but I don't consider these few months a waste at all. They are rebuilding their fan base by making contact. We have people on the Ledge that have never seen them LIVE. I hope they get their opportunity.

but if you are right, then i suspect there will be no album... or if there is one it will not be with Nicks (which is more than fine with me).

Indeed. Stevie is more financially well off than any other member in this band. If anyone is going to be pushing to fill in any gaps in the tour, it'd probably be the English contingency. John likely has big medical bills from his cancer treatment, Christine hasn't worked in the better part of two decades, and Mick is paying for yet another divorce.

I have never seen the band live. The last time they came to Sydney was in 2009. I was 16 at the time and not a fan of the band (I didn't even know who they were).

I was very excited about going to see Fleetwood Mac at the Sydney Entertainment Centre (now called Qantas Credit Union Arena) last year. My dad bought me tickets for my birthday. I was very disappointed when I found out by visiting this site that the concert I had tickets to was cancelled. Though I can understand that the band really had no choice but to cancel those dates due to John McVie's illness.

I am excited by the prospect of seeing the band for the first time with all five in my home country. I won't allow myself to get too excited until the Australia dates are officially announced.

Still, I can't help wondering why the band didn't come to Australia first. It was nice and warm in Sydney on the 30th of September. There is no need to do a cajillion American shows. One leg of US dates would have been enough. Do Australia and New Zealand in January/February and Europe in March/April.

Then the band could have been in the studio in June 2015 and get the album finished and released before 2016.

Anyone who really believes that this massive tour has nothing to do with money is in denial. Every band member knows that Fleetwood Mac is their cash cow - but only on tour, not in the studio.

This. A thousand times this. These added dates do not make a difference either way to timing of recording of the album. At the moment, anyway. A few weeks in the middle of the tour wasn't going to be for the album - it would be extra vacation time or something. Stevie saying 'not sure if I'll do an album yet' didn't cause them to add more dates, and them adding more dates didn't cause a lack of recording the album.

'Not sure I'll do an album yet', meaning she hasn't made her mind up thus far, not 'I'll definitely do an album but I'm not sure at what point in time', sorry. Wrote too hastily, probably, and obscured meaning.

"I don't know, because nothing can be done on that until we're done, and we have another seventy shows until this American tour is done, then we have Australia, then we have Europe. This isn't going to be done until this time next year," Stevie tells ABC News Radio. "So, I don't know how I'm gonna feel in a year. I don't know whether I'm gonna wanna go back to my own thing or whether I'm gonna wanna sign up for another year of making a record," she adds. "I don't really know what I'm gonna wanna do then."

That's a good question.

The only answer I can think of is that she's standing up for her right not to be involved in making a new Fleetwood Mac album. By extension, she's standing up for her right to purposefully disappoint thousands of loyal, devoted fans.

Herself...It's not likely that they will put out an album and miss out on the chance to cash in on it with another tour...So maybe she is not on board with an album because it means another tour and she does not want to do a third world tour in a row and simply wants time off...

I don't think Stevie is pushing to tour, but if she agreed to do an album, the others would stop touring to work on that album -- and then, no doubt, want to tour again on the album.

I think she'd rather tour than be stuck in the studio doing an album with FM.

Not having the album already (or a release date for it) is enough to pull my hair out about now. I don't care what they do in 2016. As long as I'm upset in the present, going crazy about it in the present feels apropros. Saying, "well I won't think about it now, everything will turn out all right in the end ..." That's not helpful. I don't care about the end.

Even if he weren't old enough to qualify for Medicare, he could always afford private health insurance.

Michele

Old enough to qualify? Huh?

In Australia, Medicare covers everyone. We pay for universal health care through our taxes. There is a 2% Medicare levy for people earning more than $24167 p.a.

Why are you Americans so scared of socialised health care? It has worked really well in the UK (NHS) and in Australia (Medicare).

I can go to any public hospital and receive free treatment. I can go to a bulk-billing GP and receive free treatment.

I don't think Stevie is pushing to tour, but if she agreed to do an album, the others would stop touring to work on that album -- and then, no doubt, want to tour again on the album.

I think she'd rather tour than be stuck in the studio doing an album with FM.

Michele

It occurred to me that maybe Stevie has writer's block. Perhaps she doesn't want to say she's on board for a new album until she has some new songs (not more songs from the vault) prepared.

The Mac is having so much fun on this tour. Let them enjoy this moment. They may or may not tour again but if they do it would never be as extensive as this one. There is a HUGE demand for them and let them feed the demand while having fun.
This is a magical moment for them. I hope it never ends. I NEVER thought I would hear Chris's magical voice fill an arena again. I want that magic all over the world!

what is she standing up for?

Her right to live her life as SHE pleases.......the same right that we all have. You and I might not always like her choices, but again, we don't walk in her boots. Also, I agree with whoever it was here on the Ledge that said that "we" the ledgies probably make up the majority of people who are having fits about this new album drama.
Most people probably don't care about new music from FM and that sucks. It only makes sense that they are going to milk this tour for all of the money that they can EARN. They are staring retirement in the face, and they all have loved ones that they want to take care of financially, I'm sure. I wish we could have a new FM album and a tour and Stevie solo and Lindsey solo and a Buckingham/Nicks tour too, but that's probably not in the cards. Time isn't on our(their) side. :sorry:

For Medicare, you have to be 65 and have to have paid into the system. We also have Medi-Cal in California, but since John moved to Hawaii, I don't know if that is available to him.

At any rate, John probably didn't have to pay most of his medical costs out of his own pocket.

I think so and so do the writers feelings about a song, the enthusiasm wanes. Because that excitement to be a little contagious, I want to feel it while it's hot. I never wanted the rest of Lindsey's EP songs anyway. They were already old to me last year.

 what is noise? that they recorded 15-20 new songs and that many of them are practically complete? seem like facts, why would they make that up?

also, fans are talking to band members (Mick has constant m&gs and is asked about this a lot, for one), and transmitting info they are getting. is that also "just noise"?

Yes! I totally agree. There is something to be said for spontaneity. The band missed this opportunity by not putting something out this fall. Or even the spring. But by 2016? Christine's "fresh as a daisy" comment regarding the songs will no longer be relevant, and that's kind of sad.

Michele

Yes. I feel this way, too. I make no bones about griping and "going crazy" when I've waited decades for this to happen and now, when the possibility seems so damn close, there are the usual Mac complications and delays. Not to mention the possibility of it all falling apart. No assurances. That annoys me more than anything.

Fleetwood Mac tour dates (subject to change) It's a minor and unrelated point, but I was reading the tour itinerary in elle's post and I thought, "Jesus Christ, what a joke all those corporate names are for most of those arenas!"

Nationwide Arena, Bankers Life Fieldhouse, Canadian Tire Centre, Rexall Place, Sleep Train Arena, Toyota Center, Dunkin' Donuts Center, KFC Yum! Center, Quicken Loans Arena, Scottrade Center, etc.

It's all about the branding, after all.

Yes its going to be wonderful. I was just listening to an interview with Mick Fleetwood on the FM site and he also was talking about the new album and how it needs to be made.
I think it will be wonderful. The Mac has had odd pressure making albums for decades after Tusk. For Mirage they felt the need to be more commercial, for Tango they really embraced the 80's sound and commercial to make sure it was successful, etc. I would love to see these 5 people make an album with no pressure and let them do what they want. Say you Will is a great album but removing 5 songs and adding 5 Chris songs would have made that album sensational.
I don't agree with the drama that want to write and blog about Stevie has not committed to a new album. There is no record deal yet and she was not invited to the get togethers because she was busy with her new album 24 K Gold. So just because she does not talk about the new album does not mean she would not do this album. There is NO WAY she would not do this new album after being in the Mac for all these years without Chris and even staying to make an album when Lindsey left. Lindsey is right. One more studio album would be the best way to go full circle and wrap it up.

Yep, just rehashed (without full context or quotes) from the interview with Tavis. The relevant part of the transcript:

TS: Which leaves me to offer this as the last question. So since Fleetwood Mac’s on the big tour now - everybody knows that so get your tickets if you can get in; they’re out there now - Um, what happens after the big tour? You gonna go back to more solo stuff?

LB: Uh, eventually. But, you know, one of the really exciting things that happened before we started rehearsing the show with Christine is she came over, because she said ‘Lindsey, I’ve got some rough ideas for new songs’, and we, she came over and we went in the studio - the two of us with John and Mick - and again, you ask ‘Well, is that still going to work?’ and that was my thought. Oh my god, you know, is this, am I still going to be able to do what I used to do for her or is what she’s going to bring me - She gave me a bunch of stuff to take home after we saw her in England when we played there, and I worked on it at home, took lots of liberties, came back, she loved it. We went in the studio for two months and came up with probably the best group of songs which were co-written that I think we’ve done in years, so we are going to continue working on a new album. And, uh, the solo stuff will probably take a backseat for another year or so.

TS: You know what, nobody’s complaining about that.

LB: No. Least of all me.

TS: People would love to hear another Fleetwood Mac album.

LB: Oh, I’m telling ya, beautiful way to kind of wrap up this last act, you know.

TS: Well, I suspect, uh, when that happens, you and maybe somebody else will come back and see us.

LB: I certainly hope so.

Stevie Nicks has never "put together" any FM albums. She presents her songs, records them, and lets the instrumentalists do the work with her input. When FM calls, she comes (most times), but she does not call them and say "hey we need to work on this album."

Lindsey Buckingham hints Fleetwood Mac album will be studio swan song
Dec. 30, 2014

Lindsey Buckingham hinted that Fleetwood Mac's next album might be the band's studio swan song. During a chat with PBS' Tavis Smiley, Buckingham spoke about the new material he's been cooking up with returning keyboardist Christine McVie, revealing, "Before we started rehearsing the show with Christine, she came over and said, ‘Lindsey, I’ve got some rough ideas for new songs. She gave me a bunch of stuff to take home after we saw her in England when we played there. And I worked on it at home, took lots of liberties, came back. She loved it. So we are going to continue working on a new album and (my) solo stuff will probably take a back seat for another year or so.”

He went on to say the still unfinished album "would be a beautiful way to kind of wrap up this last act."

Although Lindsey Buckingham is marking his 40th anniversary of joining Fleetwood Mac, at 65, he still feels like he's at the top of his game: “A lot of the idea of (laughs) being in a rock n’ roll band and getting to be one of, sort of the people who’s been around for a while, y’know, you can manage that equation any number of ways. Y’know, it’s hard for me to sort of. . . I feel the same physically as I did 25 years ago. I think I’m mentally, somewhat in arrested (laughs) development - y’know, in a good way, I hope!”

The album features Buckingham tapping into his solo work with tracks like "Go Insane" and "Trouble," Fleetwood Mac with "I'm So Afraid," and "Go Your Own Way" -- and even a rare dip into the Buckingham Nicks catalogue with "Stephanie."

The tracklisting for Lindsey Buckingham: One Man Show is: "Cast Away Dreams," "Bleed To Love Her," "Not Too Late," "Stephanie," "Come," "Shut Us Down," "Go Insane," "Never Going Back Again," "Big Love," "I'm So Afraid," "Go Your Own Way," "Trouble," and "Seeds We Sow."

I'm telling you, once Stevie Nicks realises how little work is actually required of her for this album which is at least 50% done already, she is going to be in that studio with them quick smart!

All she needs to give them is three or four new songs. She could even just give them two new songs and drag up Joan of Arc and Space Needle or What Has Rock and Roll Ever Done for You? If she wanted to do that.

She adds backing vocals to the eight already finished songs Lindsey and Christine made in March/April and voila, hey presto ...a new studio album by Fleetwood Mac is complete.

Stevie only has 3 months full-time work, maximum that she needs to do to get this album finished. I'm sure that if they can't finish an album, we will get the music in the form of Extended Play CDs instead, anyway. Worst case, the material will get rolled into a solo Lindsey Buckingham album, featuring Christine McVie as a special guest.

I'm still jealous of the music journalists who were allowed to hear the danceable new tune Too Far Gone and the boppy How I Feel when they interviewed Lindsey and Christine in the studio in, I think it was April 2014.

Lindsey Buckingham Says Fleetwood Mac Could Be Beginning Its ‘Last Act’
by Dave Lifton December 30, 2014 3:56 PM

Before embarking on their current tour, Fleetwood Mac began work on their next album. In a recent interview, Lindsey Buckingham suggested that it could become a part of a final hurrah for the group.

“If you want to think of this [tour] as the beginning of the last act,” he told PBS’ Tavis Smiley. “That’s how it feels.”

Buckingham appears to be taking that approach with their upcoming release, which has only had some work done by Buckingham to flesh out some demos by keyboardist Christine McVie, who is back in the group after 15 years on the sidelines.

“She gave me a bunch of stuff to take home after we saw her in England when we played there,” he said towards the end of the interview. “And I worked on it at home, took lots of liberties, came back. She loved it. We went in the studio for two months and came up with probably the best group of songs that were co-written that we’ve done in years. So we are going to continue working on a new album and the solo stuff will probably take a back seat for another year or so.”

He then noted that it would be a “beautiful way to kind of wrap up this last act.”
Of course, Fleetwood Mac’s entire history has been filled with stops and starts, so who knows if this really is the beginning of the end?

When it comes to recording, Stevie has always had the least demanding role in the band. It's hard to imagine that she would even consider passing on being a part in the very last chapter of this historic and epic band.

I wonder if Christine will stay in California after it's all over. I suppose we can look forward to few more solo albums from Lindsey, Stevie, and hopefully Christine.

Somehow I doubt we will ever see another solo Christine McVie album before she shuffles off her mortal coil/kicks the bucket/passes into the next life.

I think she did In the Meantime because she had a stack of songs leftover from what she wrote during 1997 in the lead up to The Dance Reunion Tour and also because her nephew Dan Perfect wanted to help her. So it was an opportunity for her to really get to know the young feller who she hadn't paid much attention to for so long. Also, Fleetwood Mac had flat out refused Christine's participation in Say You Will if she was not prepared to tour the world with them.

An 18 month tour for someone who was petrified of flying at the time just wasn't going to happen, so that meant she had to go out on her own with her nephew Dan, at least temporarily.

I think that anything Christine writes and records from here on in will be released under the Fleetwood Mac banner, until one of them drops dead, at which point solo work for the living band members would come into play. I really think that Stevie's solo work with 24 Karat Gold Album was lovely but at the same time, it just goes to show she isn't as concerned about the one last hurrah as Lindsey and Christine, Mick and John are...those four really worked hard in the studio and they all really want to realise one last swan song for this seventies super band...to make them relevant to young people with new music, just one last time and also for the long-term diehard fans.

Stevie's 24 Karat Gold Album was a real treat for fans but she appears to see less value in a brand new studio album for Fleetwood Mac, which would have a broader appeal than her solo work at this particular juncture!

She will be there eventually, if the new studio album is given an official forthcoming release date - that's when we know that Stevie will be there helping to make it happen. Christine tentatively mentioned May 2015 as a potential release date, but qualified her statements in that interview with, "I'm going to be in big trouble if I stuff this up/get this wrong"

Sorry but I find this whole notion of one last album very depressing, although it's most likely the way it will go down, if we get an album at all. It just makes me wonder what would have happened if Chris had decided to come back after just a few years, instead of 16. Fleetwood Mac's legacy may have looked (and sounded) very differently. Of course the past cannot be changed but I feel sometimes like she came back too late. How many more productive years does this band realistically have? Not too many.

Yes it is a bit depressing- but still very exciting too. We know for sure there'll at least be another album. That would no doubt at least be followed by another box-set retrospective at some point.
I wonder whether the idea of it being 'kind of a beautiful way to wrap up this last act' isn't just another ruse to lure Stevie's participation. Lindsey himself certainly seems happy to be working in the confines of the band now. I think he would like things to continue indefinitely.

Of course the past cannot be changed but I feel sometimes like she came back too late. How many more productive years does this band realistically have? Not too many.
they could have probably have a few more albums, instead of endlessly waiting for something or other. maybe Nicks would be out of the band by now if she was as reluctant to record new music as she seems to be lately.

He could just be tired of/frustrated with trying to get somebody in particular to participate on the album. I think he just wants to make music, and is tired of the politics and the fake drama.
yes! i think you hit the nail on the head, with everything you wrote.

he seemed to have had high hopes for maybe a few more albums and chapters when Christine came back and they clicked so well again. as the time goes on and they can't get Nicks on board he's probably getting tired of spinning his wheels waiting and wasting his prolific phase and he'd settle for at least putting a bow on the whole act with one last album from the 5. or maybe it will have to be 4.

I know what you mean about Lindsey...does seem odd, especially in light of what he was saying on stage earlier in the tour...about this new chapter "bearing much fruit". I hadn't really given it much thought but I think his comments are out of character for him.

I think he's clearly got a lot more creativity left in him and will do more music. I wouldn't be surprised if he and Chris continue working together…but doing so now, on an LB solo album, would take some of the novelty and big press value out of a full-5 FM album with Chris. So they'll eventually get the FM album out after the tour, and then, they've made their "final stand" if that's what it turns out to be…and Stevie can buzz off doing whatever she wants, and LB and Christine can go on to do more work together if they wish and not be held hostage to Stevie's whims.

Even the naming of the band as a way to lure a reluctant John McVie away from Mayall was a bit dramatic.

It wouldn't have to be this melodramatic one last album if they would just make albums the way normal musicians do. Book some studio space for a month, hire a producer and a sound engineer and whatever other technical staff they need, and maybe bring in a couple of backing musicians, and go at it, accepting that what they come up with is going to be good enough.

That was the way they did this process in the Bob Welch years, and look at the five albums they made during that span of time (which was what? four years?). Fan (and critical) opinions vary on those five albums, but there is no denying they were five albums that accurately reflected the band at the time they were made, and they were all good, solid efforts. (At least one was a masterpiece.) Why has superstardom made it so difficult to just bang out some songs and make an album?

Hmm, I for one think...

Awesome, a new CD :) I'm sure there will be at least a few songs that I like. And maybe it will be great

Lindsey is saying it's a last CD now, but things might change. Goodness knows they have just in last year.

Stevie will definitely be on it.

Cool. More Mac stuff in the upcoming year :) :)

"He did admit, though, that there’s still a year or two left and that he would be putting off his solo activities until things wrap up."

He made that comment this month, which tells me it will be more like 2016-17. I can't see them not doing a 2017 50th Anniversary tour, or at least a series of shows. To be so close to that milestone and not celebrate it would be stupid.

http://www.teamrock.com/news/2014-12-31/fleetwood-mac-album-will-wrap-up-last-act

(TeamRock Radio) Fleetwood Mac guitarist Lindsay Buckingham says that the band's reunion tour and upcoming album with Christine McVie will be a "beautiful way to wrap up this last act."
She officially rejoined this year after retiring in 1998, and they're currently touring the world under the banner On With The Show. But Buckingham, who admits to initial doubts over her return, has given his strongest hint yet that Mac are considering winding down - and he's putting solo plans on hold until the completion of their first record since 2003.

He tells PBS: "If you want to think of this as the beginning of the last act, that's how it feels. Christine really fills the gap of the polarity that might exist otherwise, and helps things breathe.

"We got this call from Christine saying she wanted to come back. We were in the middle of touring, the four of us. My initial reaction was, 'Okay - we have to take this with baby steps.' The want to return doesn't mean you can repeat history; it doesn't mean all the tools, all the reference points are still there for it all to work."

But after McVie made a guest appearance in London in 2012, his concerns evaporated. “She gave me a bunch of stuff to take home. I worked on it, came back and she loved it. We went into the studio and came out with the best songs we’ve co-written in years.

“Christine was always a working musician – she always had a great discipline and was very grounded in her craft. The confidence was high that it would come back. But it was daunting in the early days.”

Buckingham has only recently been able to evaluate the impact Mac have left on the music world. “When you’re commercially successful it doesn’t mean it’s going to hold up,” he says. “One of the things we’re finding now is you’ve got the people who were listening to Rumours and Tusk in the day, and you’ve also got young artists who seem to have picked up the mantle of what we were doing, and it makes sense to them.

“It’s just in the last few years we’ve realised that we did make a difference. It’s a nice place to be.”

He adds: “We’re going to continue working on the new album, and the solo stuff will take a back seat for a year or two. A beautiful way to wrap up this last act.”

The Eagles were finished by 1980, weren't they? Then back again in 1994 for Hell Freezes Over, presumably so called because of how unlikely they all thought a reunion tour was!

Their last studio album was Long Road Out of Eden in 2007, a double album. Then History of the Eagles Tour more recently.

They are a great band, much more capable of getting down to business without all the in fighting Fleetwood Mac has enjoyed, or tolerated.

I don't think you can compare Fleetwood Mac with the Eagles or other bands when it comes to reunions. The Hell Freezes over tour was in 1994 and Eagle menbers were in their late 40's and early 50's.
Christine is already 71. After this tour and Lindsey's solo stuff is at least 3 years away. Will we see them again? I think there is a good chance. Lindsey, Stevie and Mick and John have really been going strong this past decade. After this tour and album it was going to happen anyway with or without Chris.......a long break.

It will take them a good 3 years to count all the money from this tour anyway

One thing is certain. I doubt we will ever see such an extensive tour again. So go see them now. If they ever do tour again someday, I bet it would be years from now and a very scaled back version.

Oh if Lindsey is gone for good, they can always ask Billy and Rick to come back. Is anyone up for Stand on the Rock live again?

If they do tour on the back of a 'final album' then imagine the cost of the tickets- especially if they scale back on the number of dates. Best to start saving now.

I wonder where 'the end' would leave Christine- I presume she will return to her quiet life in rural England- or will she settle in the States? Indeed, I wonder where she spent Christmas???

Lindsey Buckingham Says Fleetwood Mac Are In The “Last Act” Of Their Career
52 minute(s) ago | Music News | By Rock Square

Having finally reunited with Christine McVie in 2014, Fleetwood Mac have booked themselves in seemingly every arena in the U.S. and UK, with concerts scheduled through July of this brand new year. It seems like this revitalized Mac could go on forever, but alas, McVie’s return might just give them a perfect reason to wind down and call it quits for good. Not because things aren’t going well. In fact, it’s just the opposite: they now have a chance to go out on a high note.

“If you want to think of this as the beginning of the last act, that’s how it feels,” Lindsey Buckingham said in a recent interview. “Christine really fills the gap of the polarity that might exist otherwise, and helps things breathe.”

But they’re not putting down payments on retirement cottages quite yet. They’ve still got a lot of touring ahead of them, and then after that, they will get back to work on a new album. According to Buckingham, he and McVie have been batting new song ideas around since 2012, when McVie joined the band on stage in London.

“She gave me a bunch of stuff to take home [after the London concert],” Buckingham explained. “I worked on it, came back and she loved it. We went into the studio and came out with the best songs we’ve co-written in years.”

“We’re going to continue working on the new album,” Buckingham added, “and the solo stuff will take a back seat for a year or two. A beautiful way to wrap up this last act.”

Here’s hoping Fleetwood Mac is still tapping into the creative vein that yielded 2013’s perfect “Sad Angel,” which is absolutely essential listening.

Fleetwood Mac is named in this list of most anticipated albums of 2015:

https://www.yahoo.com/music/the-10-most-anticipated-albums-of-2015-106032412806.html

There’s unfinished business in the Fleetwood Mac camp. The band’s last studio album, 2003’s Say You Will, received mixed reviews. And while the classic rockers have launched three successful tours since then, and have already announced the On With the Show tour for 2014 and 2015, they have yet to prove they can still make magic in the studio. Now that keyboardist and vocalist Christine McVie — who last played with them in 1998 — has returned, the band members might just have the juice they need to make an album that rivals their ’70s output. In May, multi-instrumentalist Lindsey Buckingham said eight songs were mostly done and that seven of them were co-written by McVie. Yes, it looks like the Mac is back.

Lindsey, Mick and John recorded 8 songs together in late 2012, all in Stevie's key. Two of those were Sad Angel and Miss Fantasy ... so does that mean with seven Christine songs that there are 12-13 new Fleetwood Mac songs floating about, somewhere out there in the ether? Wow!

Lindsey Buckingham says Fleetwood Mac are entering their 'last act'

Lindsey Buckingham says Fleetwood Mac are entering their 'last act' Photo: GettyFleetwood Mac's Lindsey Buckingham has hinted that the band may be heading into their final years as a band, describing their forthcoming world tour as the "last act" for the group.

Buckingham, who appears in the band alongside Stevie Nicks and Mick Fleetwood, cast doubt on the long-term future of Fleetwood Mac in a new interview with the US TV channel PBS (via The Guardian).

Discussing the possibility of hearing new music from the band, as well as their live plans, Buckingham said: "We're going to continue working on the new album, and the solo stuff will take a back seat for a year or two. A beautiful way to wrap up this last act."

The hopes of new music have been boosted by Christine McVie's return to the band for the first time since 1997.

"She gave me a bunch of stuff to take home," Buckingham told PBS. "I worked on it, came back, and she loved it. We went into the studio and came out with the best songs we’ve co-written in years. Christine really fills the gap of the polarity that might exist otherwise, and helps things breathe."

Fleetwood Mac tour Britain later this year and will also headline The Isle Of Wight Festival in June. That date will be their only UK festival appearance of 2015. Drummer Mick Fleetwood recently denied that Fleetwood Mac will be appearing at Glastonbury in 2015.

Fleetwood Mac will play:

London O2 Arena (May 27, 28, June 22, 24, 26, 27)
Birmingham Genting Arena (June 8, 9, July 4)
Manchester Arena (June 12, July 1)

Or she's simply just trying to play hardball to get her way about something, probably over who would produce her stuff or when the sessions for her would actually take place.

Stevie wouldn't dare be left out of the album because if the sessions were to be released as an LP, all public media eyes would be on her for her glaring omission and seeming 'unsportsmanlike' behavior due to Christine's return, especially once the band begins touting that she wanted no part of it, and especially then if she shows up for another 'Hits' tour after the albums release. No matter how much anyone here likes Stevie, if an album goes down without her after she just toured with them, we know exactly who is going to be pegged as the bad guy no matter the facts.

She will cave because it'll be the same reason she caved when Mick went public about not being sure whether Stevie would tour with them again. This is purely band politics. If an album is put out and the band wants an album 100% but Stevie wants no part, she needs to quit the band or else the media backlash will strike at her. Everybody and their mother, their brother, their sister and their neighbors want a final Rumours lineup album. And if it doesn't happen, she's going to get blamed. I highly doubt her ego could take the blow.

It will happen come Hell or high water.

i agree this is all band politics: the band is trying to get Stevie to work with them and she doesn't want to yet wants to stay in the band (and not get blamed for no album). i see her RS cover story fitting nicely into her agenda and against the band's.

if you read some of the fan comments, the backlash to RS story is against the band not wanting to do a new album, cause it was presented as SN speaking for the band. story is nicely crafted so that it perpetuates the picture of them still having childish or inconsequential fights of ex-lovers, not that they are actually disagreeing about something substantial and artistic, like a direction the band should take (didn't they really disagree about that since Tusk????? guess that story is not nearly as sexy as ex-lovers fighting!).

Lindsey has been very inspired with his collaborations with Christine, and seems determined/resolved to wrap up Fleetwood Mac with one more album- a final gesture to themselves and their legions of fans.

Stevie is a very sentimental lady. Despite any contentions she may hold, Fleetwood Mac made her rich and famous, giving her the opportunity to pursue her own muse. Knowing that the band has a pending expiration date, it's hard to believe she would take this particular time to opt out.

Though she has expressed some ambivalence - unsure of what she wants to do-I feel, once the tour is over, she will be on board with contributing and finishing the album, since there will be no turning back; this will be her absolute final commitment to them. She'll be free from all the oppression and obstruction she apparently perceives. But she will express lament and never stop continuing to tell redundant stories about Lindsey and the band.

But she will express lament and never stop continuing to tell redundant stories about Lindsey and the band.
god I loathe her, and her problems. She has become the epitome of being a spoiled princess. And yet lacks the class to stand upright, and honor the band that afforded her her life!!!

Most of the songs are done I guess.

If it was done like Stevie's 24K with no holdups and bickering aside I say yes.

If not I would be happy to see Stevie do a small tour to promote 24K before it gets anymore staler.

Will Stevie and Lindsey write together the way Stevie and Dave Stewart write together? or the way Lindsey and Christine write together? I think the chances of SN & LB working together that way are slim & none...If Stevie participates and if she brings Dave in he will have a profound impact on the sound of her FM songs...Other than his addition of guitar & vocals LB's influence on her FM songs ( for maybe the first time ever ) will be minimal...

They will sing together for sure. Whether it's backing vocals or a full on duet, but writing a song together? My vote is no.
I love when they all sing together: love in store, early live stuff, little lies. Behind the mask songs, much of say you will. Just a few examples.
Stevie has always done beautiful backing vocals for her self, which is nice too.
Just no out side vocals!! No Sharon or Lori. I love them but they don't belong in FWM's studio. Dave Stewart though? I appreciate his production. They've had outside producers before. It's good to have different opinions. Did I go off topic?

No, I don't think that Stevie and Lindsey will be co-writers on a song, especially not any new songs and I don't see any reasons why they should be. They have never done so in the past and I don't think starting now would help band relations. Frozen Love doesn't exactly count. Co-writing is not their forte as a duo.

Now, if there are older songs, then maybe one of them might give it to the other. If Stevie has old lyrics, she might give them to Lindsey and he could do some music. We have speculated as to whether Deep Dense was a Stevie song, based on what Javier said. So, I could see that happening, Lindsey working and adding to a song she has already written years ago, but not them having to collaborate in real time together.

could be. i don't know. and as you probably know, personally i don't really care. plus i think if he was someone else without their sordid history, he would have had co-writing credits on more than FL. whatever shape his catalytic activities take, if that means new songs he and Christine worked on will actually come out in this lifetime, i'm onboard with that.

Never once in a million years will Stevie and Lindsey ever collaborate in that manner. They have never had a Simon and Garfunkel or Hall and Oates type of collaboration and chemistry, Why would anybody expect that now?

I don't believe in the perpetuated notion that Stevie doesn't want Lindsey producing her songs. He is responsible for taking her raw talent and crafting the songs that launched her into stardom. She is well aware of that.

I think the experience of recording Say You Will really soured her creative relationship with Lindsey because of various circumstances. Without Christine there, the balance of power shifted. It's not so much of how she didn't like how he produced her songs, its more about how she didn't feel connected to the process. It was a dark time in her life, and the enduring isolation suffered during the recording that album made it even darker.

Dave Stewart was like a beacon of light that opened her eyes to a world where recording can be a fun experience that's expedient and full of levity. Let's face it: Lindsey is a pretty serious and controlling guy who likes working alone. His process is fastidious and solitary. Dave is the polar opposite personality. His process is spontaneous and collaborative. So I can understand her hesitance in committing to work with Lindsey.

With Christine back in the fray, I assume Stevie would love to create new music with her. But she doesn't want to Lindsey to rein over everything. Lindsey has spoken in the past, entertaining the possibility of bringing in a co-producer -- be it Dave or someone else. I think that would be the ideal situation which Stevie would be more amenable with, as Lindsey's influence would be countered and balanced.

Well, in a weird way you can say that they usually do co-write. That dressingroom Wild Heart shows a LB track under a SN melody/ lyric. If that version did appear on mirage, I'm sure it would have been credited as a Nicks-song. And now we know it as a Nicks song AND a LB song Can't Go Back. Lindsey always have lent his musical windowdressideas to songs. It's just a matter of choice if you count something as a cowrite or see it as an arrangement. Either way, he put his stamp on almost everything she ever did under the Macflag.

Gerald, I'm surprised you don't know this. It could never be credited as a Nicks song. During that particular photo shoot, Stevie was playing all the musical tracks that had just been laid down by Fleetwood Mac. I can see them needing a break after the tour and I think it can only benefit them. No one wants them in the studio burnt out and cranky. Let them separate and when they reconvene maybe they'll be glad to reunite and reignite the creative spark. I think taking the rest of this year off is great. http://www.stltoday.com/entertainment/music/kevin-johnson/fleetwood-mac-is-on-with-the-show-christine-mcvie-in/article_bc381dd6-479d-592c-8070-15705b399eea.html

Fleetwood Mac is 'On With the Show,' Christine McVie in tow

Fleetwood Mac is feeling more whole these days on its “On With the Show” tour.

“On with the show” has seemingly been the band’s motto. Even without keyboardist-vocalist Christine McVie, it had embarked on tour after tour. But after a 16-year absence, McVie — who wrote “Say You Love Me,” “Little Lies,” “Don’t Stop” and “Everywhere” — is back in the fold.

With McVie’s return, guitarist-vocalist Lindsey Buckingham says the group has come full circle. “It’s a little bit more complete.”

In Fleetwood Mac’s McVie-less years, Buckingham says he and Mick Fleetwood, Stevie Nicks and John McVie were “for the most part fine.”

“I certainly have no regret about those tours,” he says. “They were quite successful for what they were. You have to look at Fleetwood Mac as this band of people who maybe on paper don’t belong in the same band together, but the symmetry we create makes it work well.”

With McVie away, Buckingham says the band’s energy was different, though for him it was also a period of growth.

Nicks represented one end of the band, and he represented another.

“Now, with Christine, there’s a middle ground — a certain level of coherence,” Buckingham says.

“Christine is very grounded as a musician and the way she approaches her songs and her writing,” he says. “It’s all based around a different center from what’s mine or Stevie’s. And Christine being one of two females in the band, she provides some coherence on a social level for Stevie.”

Having McVie back in the mix means a new level of rehearsals is necessary.

“We needed to dust off Christine’s material, get that back up to speed in the context of the way we approach shows now,” Buckingham says. “It’s different from when she was last with the band. It’s not just about the individual songs. I’m sure we could do ‘Go Your Own Way’ with no rehearsal and do it fine. But it’s more to it than that. Each song is like a movie.”

At this point in the game, preparing for a tour is something that’s natural for Buckingham. “Obviously, the experience counts for a lot, and over time you kind of take it as your own kind of normal.”

He says Fleetwood Mac knows its fans are coming to hear the classics, such as “Gypsy,” “Second Hand News,” “The Chain” and “Landslide,” but the band is still working on new music. An album is about halfway finished, and Buckingham says it’s one of the best things the group has ever done. “It’s so brilliant, so meaningful to me.”

“You do come to that point of realization that maybe the audience isn’t that interested in new stuff. They’re coming to hear a body of work,” he says. “If the audience went away not having heard a lot of the hits, they would feel cheated.”

But Buckingham describes the band’s new album as a little bit of everything — in tune with the times while also being familiar.

“I don’t want to market anything that isn’t authentic,” he says. “I don’t think we can try to imitate anything. That’s the wrong approach. You go for what you like and put your own spin on it.”

The band members have been submitting music, including McVie.

“She said she was writing again, and she gave me a bunch of raw stuff to listen to,” Buckingham says. “I took liberties with it and did for her what I’ve always done. And I sent her a bunch of stuff of mine — song ideas I didn’t put melodies on. She came back with brilliant things.”

Whatever Fleetwood Mac comes up with, Buckingham expects it will be as timeless as the music in the band’s deep repertoire. He knows the band’s music is timeless; he hears its influences elsewhere.

“I hear our sound surfacing with different groups,” he says. “You don’t know if these kids are children of people who had these albums or what. I can hear a little bit of it in Haim. They’re great gals — really talented.”

Another album would naturally suggest yet another Fleetwood Mac tour is in the works.

“I don’t know — it’s hard for me to get a sense of it in any collective way because I know I don’t feel any differently than I did 30 years ago, physically and mentally,” he says. “I’m playing better, and creatively I’m at the top of my game. If it was just me, it’s an irrelevant thing to talk about now. But that’s not necessarily true of everyone. I can’t speak to Stevie or John or Christine.

“Mick is an animal. He’ll probably drop dead onstage one day.”

With McVie contributing to the album, she apparently will remain a part of the band for the foreseeable future.

After the current tour, Buckingham is sure the band will take a couple of years off to finish the album.

“I would be surprised if we didn’t go out with a brand-new piece of product,” he says. “I would be disappointed if we didn’t tour that. We have at least one last act out there.”

I'm glad to hear to hear him still talking about the new album. It sounds like he and Christine made some great songs together. He seems very proud of their work and excited to release it. I think the album will be worth the wait. If it's going to take another year or two, I'm sure Stevie will eventually come around.

My only frustration is that this has turned into the never-ending tour. They must be running on autopilot, hence same set list night after night. I can't imagine how they avoid getting burned out and sick of each other. I'll feel better when the tour ends...lol.

In the aftermath, while we wait for them to finish their album, maybe they will release a DVD/CD of their current tour. Or maybe re-releases of Mirage and Tango in the Night with bonus tracks.

I certainly want their new album in physical form - vinyl and CD. Digital-only released music leaves a lot to be desired. I want hold and see it as much as hearing it, for it makes a stronger connection and identity.

Given their ages, and the amount of shows they've played in nearly eight months, not to mention the as-of-yet unconquered world legs, I'd say this tour is ridiculously long and beyond what any of them should be doing at this point. Twenty year olds would find it grueling and taxing. I can't imagine how these five do it, and I can't imagine any of them wanting to jump into the studio immediately when it's done. The new timeline suggests a 2017 release date. I would not be surprised if it comes in 2018. This band exhausts me.

No, but looking at Unleashed and the tour in 2013, they are long. Remember, 2013 would have been longer had John not gotten ill. This tour is not quite 8 months yet. They had time off in December and some time earlier this year.

I just don't see this as some weird, never-ending tour. This band has been touring a lot these past years. That's all they seem to do.

I disagree with all of this. You and me and the average musician would be exhausted but that's because we have to carry our own luggage and make all our own travel arrangements. If I was greeted by thousands of screaming fans and then chauffeured from the arena to the hotel in a limo and then driven to a private jumbo jet with a staff waiting to cater to my every need, you can be damn sure I would never be complaining about any of the traveling I had to do. I would love to be able to lay down in a comfortable bed while flying through the air from city to city instead of crammed into a seat that my hips are too wide for, praying and hoping the person in the window seat doesn't have to get up to use the restroom because it is a nightmare for me to get out of my seat and back into it again.

Your last two sentences are exactly what I feel. My frustration is that yet another LONG tour that won't end until late November (don't forget Australia) is keeping them from making new music. I want new music. I think this is what was frustrating Jondlar in his/her first post--and I agreed.

Even with all of the luxury and the personal trainers, each concert and the preparation for each concert takes a huge physical toll that would exhaust most people half their ages. It's easy to disagree with this sentiment because we aren't doing it. No matter how much is taken care of for them, they still have to get up there and do 2.5 hour shows every couple of days. They still have to travel. They still have to rehearse. They still have press interviews.

Vancouver Sun Return of the Mac By Francois Marchand,

Mick Fleetwood talks new album, Christine McVie, and the end of Fleetwood Mac

http://www.vancouversun.com/entertainment/Return/10926148/story.html#ixzz3VfUSraUr

Never say die once wrote Black Sabbath.

For pop-rockers Fleetwood Mac, the saying couldn’t be any more true.

The band recently reunited with long gone singer and keyboardist Christine McVie, who rejoined Lindsey Buckingham, Stevie Nicks, John McVie and Mick Fleetwood after 16 years away.

If you ask Fleetwood, the founding drummer of the group, reuniting with McVie has reinvigorated the Mac, whose members have had well-documented complex and drug-fuelled relationships, especially around the time of their 1977 classic album Rumours, which remains one of the best-selling albums of all time.

In a recent conversation with The Vancouver Sun, Fleetwood, 67, opened up about returning to the studio with McVie in tow, the band’s most recent string of tour dates, and what the future holds for Fleetwood Mac.

Q: We just saw Fleetwood Mac in Vancouver in November. How does it feel to come back to our neck of the woods so fast?

A: It feels good. You can’t go anywhere unless you’re wanted. (Laughs.) So that’s a good feeling for us old “gigsters.” And we happen to adore that neck of the woods anyhow. We always love coming back (to Vancouver). It’s a beautiful place. It’s one of the towns where you go, “Oof, if only we had two days off there.” As a musician, this tour has unfolded beyond anything anyone might have thought, including ourselves. So it’s gratifying — it’s nice to be loved. Off we go again: It’s the never-ending tour.

Q: So you don’t see an end in the foreseeable future for Fleetwood Mac in its current incarnation?

A: Not in terms of “the end of the band” or saying goodbye. No. Unless I don’t know something. (Laughs.) I feel thoroughly employed. We’re working all the way through next Christmas. That’s almost far enough. We’re talking and feeling really excited about creating new music. It looks like a viable future ahead of us, as far as I can see.

If you want a more philosophical answer as to, “Do you ever see this coming to an end?” Yeah, I think we’d all be fairly crazy at this point (not to think about it). But then you start thinking about the Rolling Stones or Elton John and you go, “Hmm.” And you start looking around — you don’t want to be Tony Bennett touring at 85 years old (Bennett is in fact 88).

Having said that, we’re a working band and we’re working harder than we did when we were in our 30s. So go figure. The enthusiasm to do it is very much alive. But time itself speaks to you and you go, “Do I actually think in all sensibility think that any of us — and I can only speak for myself — that we’ll still be doing this 10 years from now?” No. “Do I visualize I’ll still be a musician enjoying playing in some shape or form?” Yes. It’s what we do.

Q: How is the chemistry in the band right now, with Christine coming back into the fold? Having done one round of touring, do you feel things are better than you expected?

A: Oh yeah. Any which way you look at where we are as a band, the fact is that Stevie is hugely enjoying having her old girlfriend back. They’re friends, you know? They’re like the funniest odd couple. She has a partner and she’s not just surrounded by ex-boyfriends. So it’s all good.

Musically, it’s astoundingly complete. We were happy doing what we were doing for many, many years without Chris. But if I had to put a line in the sand, I would say this is something that is really almost exclusively unique: That someone comes back to a band that’s doing what we’re doing at the level we’re doing it. The Rolling Stones don’t have Bill Wyman up there. They have a great band and Ronnie (Wood) is a Rolling Stone, but it’s not Brian Jones.

We are complete and we’re lucky and we’re enjoying it. It’s a great way for me as herder, someone who’s been trying to keep this band going. I couldn’t think of a better ending, when this does end, that we’re all on the same page and writing the same last chapter, which is no time soon, as far as I know.

Q: You’re working on a new album and some of the tracks are already completed. The only thing missing are Stevie’s vocals. What’s holding that back?

A: Touring until next Christmas. (Laughs.) That would do it, you know? We all have lives and stuff, so the little breaks that we get really aren’t that big. So we’re working and we’re trying to find ways for all of that to make sense. At some point, probably after this coming Christmas, we’ll be ready to address all of that.

We have full intention of not leaving for a five-year gap. It would be lunacy at this point. We want to keep going. Two years after we come off the road is what most sensible bands do, otherwise you overstay your welcome anyhow. It goes very, very quickly when you’re putting albums together and thinking of fun things to project and work on. Our whole chemistry is about being busy for pretty large and undetermined amount of times.

Q: What are some of the new songs about? What inspiration did you draw from on the new material?

A: I wish I could answer you but I’m not the songwriter. As they say, I’m “just the drummer.”

(The material is) really powerful. Lindsey’s a given because I’ve been working on and off with Lindsey anyhow. But Chris disappeared for nigh on 16 years. All I can say is that the chemistry between her and Lindsey as songwriters used to be fairly detached, and Lindsey would come in very strong producing and interpreting the material. This time, to my knowledge, they have worked on songs together, taking Lindsey’s ideas and then Chris coming in and finishing with melodies and words. That’s something, to my knowledge, that’s entirely new. It’s great. I think Lindsey is finding it very gratifying that it’s gone to the next step with Chris and vice versa.

So all of those juices seem to be very intact and it’s not totally necessary for a band like us to reinvent the wheel — and we don’t. But I have to say it’s a nice extra texture to know that that spirit is still alive and well in all the songwriters in this band.

Q: You recently revisited all of Fleetwood Mac’s history, both glorious and inglorious, in your new book Play On. If anything, out of all the turbulence and the madness and the fun and the excitement of being in Fleetwood Mac over the years, what do you want people to remember?

A: I hope the overview for the band I’ve been in since 1967 is that, no matter what, we really genuinely cared about our craft. Not only were we lucky — especially myself — to survive the lifestyle choices that we made, but I truly pay homage to the fact that Fleetwood Mac, as an institution, demanded that you had some semblance of responsibility. And I think it saved a lot of us, certainly myself.

I think Stevie has been really outspoken about our lifestyle, so I can share that her dedication — even with the huge distractions — has always been about the art, and that goes without saying for anyone that’s ever been in this band. This incarnation of Fleetwood Mac speaks to that. That’s what I would hope people have felt.

I think we’re able to be a little reflective, just as the passing of time itself has allowed us not to wallow in what it was. It is quite gratifying to realize that you have cared about what you do.

I am happy they are enjoying this probably last monster tour. Something like 75 North American dates. The Dance only had 40 dates period. Christine turned down touring Europe. I say let them enjoy this enthusiasm because this is the last tour before the last album and possible goodbye tour.
As long as they do an album and give Christine at least 5 songs, I will be happy. It makes me happy seeing them so happy.

In his interview with Larry King Lindsey says touring isn't physically hard. The video is in the LB forum.

yes, SN has repeatedly said in interviews, when talking about telling Christine to get a trainer etc, how physically demanding the tour is for all of them. while LB has been very clear, especially in that last Larry King interview, that touring is not physically demanding for him at all.

when asked how long he thinks he will be doing this, LB said that as of right now he sees no end to it - releasing new music, playing and touring. that he plays better than ever, is inspired and writing new music, and is physically in great shape. and as far as FM goes, that physically, he thinks Mick and he can do it easily for many many years, but he's not sure about the other 3.

so it's different for different band members, it's just that Stevie tends to generalize whatever she thinks or feels to the rest of the band, whether or not what may be true for her also applies to others.

The real reason they're stalling to put out the new album besides the touring?...Keep in mind that the 50th anniversary of the band is approaching, in 2017. That's when they'll put out the album, most likely along with some type of new compilation package. That would be smart marketing.

(apart from Stevie, perhaps) Fleetwood Mac want to be active. If they wait until 2017 to put out an album it would mean 1016 would be fallow. Better to get 'the product' out in 2016. They'd need to promote it- not necessarily a huge tour like the present one. Then they could milk the 50 year anniversary/ 40 year Rumours anniversary with a compilation package (including some more new material) in 2017.

Why not tour 5 years straight- whats the problem?

I despair. Its what musicians do... they record music for release and then play music live. Unless they need to take a whole year off to record they can play live. They've recorded more than an albums worth of music (almost 2 albums worth of music) so they should get it released soon and then go and play it live. Whats the point in sitting around for a year for the sake of it?

It's saturating the market if they play greatest hits every time but there's a clamour for them to play new material.

I'm glad to hear to hear him still talking about the new album. It sounds like he and Christine made some great songs together. He seems very proud of their work and excited to release it. I think the album will be worth the wait.

Unfortunately, that's pretty meaningless. He's been saying that about everything he's done since SYW. He now looks back at SYW and says it's uneven. I'm waiting for him to come clean about the released version of GOS, which also suffers from some of that.

I'll believe it when I hear it but anything Lindsey says about this phantom album that now will take another two years to complete after they wrap up the tour this Christmas, I take with a handful of salt. It's just not credible.

And besides, if Christine is writing a lot of the lyrics, I can't get too excited, considering the "In the Meantime" stuff: You love me, you left me, I loved you, you're a creep." Is that kind of stuff going to resonate from a bunch of geezers? Lindsey had taken a very interesting turn lyrically with the original GOS themes (Peacekeeper, Red Rover, Murrow, Miranda, etc.), and the brutal honesty of the Under the Skin lyrics was refreshing, but then he started singing about "sad angels" and some other insipid stuff, so I have my doubts that this material will be as a good as he would have us believe.

For the next two years they wouldn't need to do the extensive number of dates they have been doing. They could do half the number of venues in 2016 and the other half in 2017. By 2017 it will have been (at least) 2 years since they'd visited those places. An anniversary tour is automatically going to generate interest. Keeping in the public eye while they are hot property would be a good thing.

As us TRUE fans see a dozens of shows of the same tour and get bored of the same setlists.

The setlist will never change. It will be the same except for some new tunes or adds and subtracts.

The FM 50/40 anniversary package would be great.

At this point they are making alot more money with these hits tours then selling an new album. Its sad to say that but thats the way it is these days with older artists and bands that are underrated.

Maybe something a little more toned down, like "I think this work will hold up with the rest of our catalogue." But calling it "THE best thing we've ever done" is a very unrealistic standard for the album to live up to. They haven't even gotten anything from Stevie, yet.

Very true. However, I believe that the hit tour style is really down to the Mac's own decisions. It's a matter of a artists setting their own expectations.

For instance, Springsteen has had a number of tours as of late and, with the exception of the Working On A Dream tour, his sets have always highlighted new material - this is going back to his very early days of touring. Additionally, he has a record of playing number of deep cuts during shows (another expectation that fans and many newcomers have when attending his shows).

Fleetwood Mac has always relied on the "hits" to carry their shows. Look back at the Tusk tour. Sure, they played Tusk material. However, the bulk of the list came from FM/Rumours. Same with Mirage (although I would argue they did more deep cuts than normal here). Same with the Tango tour. Same with The Dance. Same with Say You Will. It's a precedent the band set and continues to maintain.

Personally, having been able to witness the On With The Show tour, I can say that I do not mind. Would I like to have heard Brown Eyes? Walk A Thin Line? Angel? Tango In The Night? Of course I would have. However, as a show, the hits that FM plays are iconic and make for an awesome rock show experience.

I want a new album from them as much as anybody. And I do hope that, if in fact the album comes to be, that their tour will consist of new material However, a show without a great deal of their hits just does not seem likely. They have never been a 'risky' band in terms of set selection before, I do not see how that will start now.

Whenever they've put out a new album they've always played a small selection from that album. I'd expect to hear 5 or 6 new songs in a short tour next year. Of course their set list is always largely going to consist of hits. Both Lindsey and Mick are suggesting a focus on an album in early 2016. Lindsey has no intention of returning to solo work in any hurry after the current tour and seems fully committed to work with Fleetwood Mac. If they wrap up an album in early 2016 they will need to promote it. That will in part involve live concerts.

OF COURSE! He's not going to sit there and say "oh, our new stuff is crap". Every time there's a new album on the horizon, whether it's Fleetwood Mac or his own, he always says something to the effect of "it's the best stuff we've ever done". It's a marketing ploy.

 So cynical! A marketing ploy? There is nothing being marketed. Why question the sincerity that he and Christine enjoyed an inspired and prosperous songwriting collaboration? I'ts such a benign expression. Why is that something to bitch about?

The real reason they're stalling to put out the new album besides the touring?...Keep in mind that the 50th anniversary of the band is approaching, in 2017. That's when they'll put out the album, most likely along with some type of new compilation package. That would be smart marketing.

They are not that smart. The members may have their opinions about the way they are marketed. But they are artists, not marketers. Ultimately their record company makes most of the decisions.

they don't have a record company.

but i agree with you, if their recent history can teach us anything, it's that they are not that smart. ;)

Good point...Could it be that WB has no interest in new material from FM at this time...With 2017 being the big 50/40 year for the band it would probably be easier (and more profitable) for WB to put out another "Special Edition" whatever in 2017 than sign the band to a new contract...

I just don't get why they are so hung up on Warner's. I get that that is where their catalog is, but WB hasn't worked terribly hard on their behalf in recent years.

It's a status symbol /ego thing kind of like the old Hollywood star wanting to work for the big movie company one last time...

What do you mean "nothing being marketed"? Just the MENTION of new material being worked on IS "marketing"...it's stirring the pot of interest at the first budding of the seed. Because once the album is released, how many songs will make it to the concert stage? 1? 2? 3? if we're lucky, maybe 3. If the material is THAT good, then play the whole F-ing album. The LATEST album, not 3/4 of the album you released nearly 40 years ago. Drop some of the songs that are more moldy than Mrs Bates sitting in her rocking chair next to her motel.

I'd be hopeful of more than that. we had 2 new songs in the set on the back of the EP alone.

On the Tusk tour they obviously played a lot of new material.
On the Mirage tour they played 4/5 new songs.
After that it has always been different scenarios;
The Tango and Mask tours each had about 4/5 new songs from the album (plus older, pre B/N material).
On the 'Time tour' they played....er, lots of covers.
They played 7 or 8 new songs on the Say You will tour.

I'd expect 2 new songs per writer on the back of a new album.

But the reality is the fans love those songs and the band probably really enjoys the response they get when they play a song people love.

But they will definitely play more than 3 new songs. They've never played as few as 3 new songs from an album. In all your pent up frustration about the greatest hits tours you must've forgotten how the band operates when they actually do release an album. They promote it very well on stage. More than most bands their age and stature would.

Wake up...you're dreaming.
Granted, the rules were different before the end of the Tusk tour.
Mirage:
Eyes Of The World
Gypsy
Love In Store
Hold Me (and that was dropped before the end of the tour)
(no 5th song)

Tango In The Night:
Little Lies
Everywhere
Isn't It Midnight
Seven Wonders

Behind The Mask:
In The Back Of My Mind
Stand On The Rock
Skies The Limit
Save Me

Time: There wasn't a tour for it...it was released AFTER the tour ended.
BUT, they DID play "Blow By Blow" & "Dreaming The Dream" on the tour that preceded the album's release...as well as Billy's "The Bigger The Love" which was slated to be on the "new" album (then titled Another Link In The Chain) up until they revamped it to include Christine's songs.

No...I remember very clearly how the band operates...they hammer us with Rumours and the '75 album and new material be damned. Sure, they'll start a tour playing a bunch of songs from a new album (in the case of Say You Will, but look how quickly they started dropping the new tunes as the tour progressed. Started off playing 8 or 9 songs, but 3 songs didn't make it to the 2nd show of the tour (or any subsequent show). Then one by one, they dropped more SYW songs. Until all that was left was the title cut, "Peacekeeper", "Come" & "Goodbye Baby". After all the BS in interviews that they'd just done "the best material they've ever done". It's all BS. PLAY the new stuff, the entire f-ing album, until it's hammered home by us faithful that it's what we're going to hear and that we'd be f-ing lucky to hear any "hits". If they'd cater to long-time fans instead of the few people who hadn't seen them before, they might earn a penny's worth of credibility. But, at this point, they're a sad nostalgia act. Still trying to suck some life out of a long dead romance.

The final show of 2004 also included "Red Rover". In total they played 9 new songs of 18 on the tour. It was well represented and they played no fewer than 5 and as many as 8 at any given show so it still doesn't make sense that you would presume they'd play 3 new songs at most and possibly fewer off a new album when they've never done that before.

And while they're catering to the hard core fans playing the entire new album their attendance numbers will dwindle. Nice strategy. You, we, aren't the ones filling arenas. They can't play basketball arenas and ignore their hits.

Gee, so much anger- unnecessarily so.
Unless I'm much mistaken Hold Me was kept to the end of the tour. Even The Dance tour had 4 new songs. Therein, they've had at least 4 new songs as regulars in the set for every single tour.
On the Billy/Rick tours they did a lot of other material in addition to the 'new' material.
Say You Will had 5 ever present songs, one more that was played at the majority of dates and one more that had significant plays.
Your 3 songs assertion is pretty much crap!

I know at this point you think you know everything, but a "sad nostalgia act" doesn't sell out arenas like they are doing right now. Their relevance is all around in music currently as well. Take a f***ing chill pill.

You'd get likely 6 new songs added to the set list (which might rotate over the course of different legs of a tour). What you'd lose out on would be any "deep tracks" from previous albums.

I think we'll see Stevie do a second volume of Vault songs in late 2015/early 2016. She will also have handed some songs over to Lindsey to work on. She will then do a medium sized tour to promote both albums. Towards the third/ last quarter of 2016, she will come in and finish her stuff on the FM album. They will tour behind the album most of 2017 ~ the group's 50th anniversary ~ then call it quits.

since they've been talking about this 2-year interval before the new album/tour all of the sudden, i'd be more than happy with your plan as long as Lindsey spends the same timeframe (end of 2015/16) putting out new solo album and touring behind it.

he has way too much new material recorded already for this forever-never-coming-out FM album. he can use his 8 co-writes with Chris for FM, and songs he recorded with Mick and John in 2012 for solo plus add some new ones (which should be easy with how prolific he's been!) and self-release all that in 2016. good thing about this - we'd finally get to hear all those songs. of course for diehard LB fans, bad thing about those songs is that from what LB said about them they are "fleetwood mac-y" and not solo lindseyesque.

bad thing about all this of course is that we will have to wait at least 3 years (starting fr om 2014) for those Chris-Lindsey co-writes. but i guess we have to cut our losses somewhere. ;)

I hope any 50th anniversary celebrations/releases include remastered editions of Mirage and TITN. If not, I'll be finally convinced that we'll never see them.

Or they can give us Rumours on Bluray/3D...
