Here's a 2007 interview with Doug Fox where Lindsey explains what Cast Away Dreams is about.
" I guess the imagery was really just about the idea of someone who is trying to do the right thing - this is not what I did - but it was sort of imagining being in the position of someone who's wanting to make the right choice, who's wanting to prioritize properly and in order to do that, they're feeling like they pretty much have to give up their MUSE."
You take this interview, add it to the story he told over and over again during the Under the Skin Tour, add the song's lyrics saying "magic one all our dreams are done", as well as "so, sleep and dream of me" and I don't see how you can come up with any other explanation except, Lindsey and Kristen were fighting about Lindsey and Stevie's relationship and Lindsey decided (in 2003) that he needed to let his dreams, ideas, goals with Stevie go for the good of his family. I know it's not a popular idea on this board, but to me it appears it is valid.

I have no real opinion or interpretation of this song. But, if it is about Stevie - he said whatever it was he did not do the right thing. So, your conclusion would be incorrect that he let "his dreams, ideas, goals with Stevie go for the good of his family" based on his statement.
