Stevie was co-produced by John Shanks on one SYW track. I forget which one. So it has happened.
I think Shanks actually coproduced "What's the World Coming to" so not a Stevie song..Had not heard of him working specifically on any of her SYW tracks.

Everyone needs to share their fandom in a place that is most suited for their own particular tastes and The Ledge is not that place.
Huh??? Then what is The Ledge for, if you don't mind my asking? I personally thought it was a place that I could share and express my opinions, experiences, stories and nerd boy "fandom" about Fleetwood Mac and Stevie. That's why I joined in the first place.

If her songs are so bad why have they spent 11 years trying to get her to record with them???

If you like the atmosphere, it's for you. If you find the attitude offensive, then it's not for you. But it's certainly possible that it's not the place you thought or hoped it would be.
If you're on Facebook with people who feel like you do and share most of your opinions and you hear that The Ledge is a downer and taints any enthusiasm you feel for the band, then the opinions of the people you like on the matter are probably something you will agree with, so there's no need to come here and get irritated.
If you were irritated a few years ago and left and just came back to see if things were still bad, they are still the same. So, you should be with people who share in your feelings for the band and multiply that positive vibe and don't bring it down.
That's what I did. I came here in 2003 and didn't like it and didn't come back until I could make it a place that I did like. The things that made the Ledge it's most popular aren't here today and they are the things that I personally did NOT like about it. That's why I didn't hang around here then. But what's true now that wasn't true then is that there are so many more social media outlets that allow people to identify the groups they like best and to converse with those people, while avoiding those they don't like.
That's what everyone should do. We have choices now that we didn't have years ago.

I wasn't complaining. I simply noted that many former members are noticeably absent due to hostility towards their favorite FM member, and still the overwhelming majority favor FM waiting for Stevie to release any record in that FM "Rumours" poll. Maybe you need to re-read my post:cool:. I'd understand if you were just a tad defensive since, after all, it is your board.
Not that I need to defend myself, however I am a fan of every member of FM (Rumours era), have all of their individual solo albums. Nevertheless, Stevie is most definitely my favorite artist of this band, and even I have been critical of her on occasion.

She handed the band "Juliet" & "Joan Of Arc", in addition to the others on Tango.
In my opinion, Lindsey did not do anything magnificent or unique with "Twisted" - which is a great composition. It was middle of the road production. Nice & pleasant - kinda like his "EP" material.
Not to mention she handed over the motherload on the SYW project??
So something sure changed?!?

What I love about The Ledge is that our members are allowed to be honest. We don't have to kiss anyone's a$$. No member of FM needs any one of us to defend them. I LOVE The Ledge exactly how it is now and LOVE Michele's sense of humor that didn't seem to surface until a couple of years ago. And I love her bluntness. I love her confidence when she says to people, if you don't like this site the way it is, then leave.

History suggests that your assertion isn't true at all. Stevie pulled songs from her solo sessions for FM on "Mirage" ("Gypsy") and SYW ("Thrown Down", "Everybody Finds Out".)
And on Tango, FM had their pick of "Joan Of Arc" and "Juliet" and opted for WISYA and WTTRS
EXCELLENT points especially on the fact they were offered Joan of arc and went with wasamattababy instead
And Stevie's mirage songs are some of her best material. That's alright is FAR better then after the glitter fades, the comparable country song from Bella Donna. straight back is awesome. Basically a shorter sisters of the moon. And gypsy is well gypsy. All fit the flow and feel of mirage.

Twisted is best in demo form.
Lindsey's songs were far superior than Stevie's on SYW. Some of them like ilume and Thrown Down were ruined by bad lyrics. Lindsey did a great job with Smile at You...
Joan of Arc - gross. You proved my point.

I know what your post said. I'm not defensive. My position is simply that The Ledge is not the place to talk about how bad the Ledge is. A comment that not all Stevie fans voted in the poll, period, would have been innocuous. The comment that you made wasn't.
As for people not liking the hostility towards their favorite band member, there are plenty of Lindsey fans who don't like the forum either. They stay away. Are there as many Lindsey fans staying away as there are Stevie fans? No, because Stevie has more fans. But fans on both sides feel spurned and insulted, certainly.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^joan of arc is an awesome song! Don't know if I want her to do it now tho. It was a perfect fit for tango and now I feel it should just live in demo land for us die hards.
And about SYW, stevie and Lindsey both contributed great songs. My #1 is from Lindsey then the rest of the top 5 are Stevie's songs for me then Lindsey takes the rest of the higher middle songs and Stevie gives probably the 3 worst. So I feel she gives the highs and the lows of the album. Lindsey gives the highest high and the good but no bad. And like Stevie what I just said probably only makes sense to me.

And if you like both of them equally (and together) you're even more lucky - you can get double doses of bitterness and insults on one day even, if you go to the right threads! One can't just always go 'elsewhere' (like Facebook). It's an entirely different structure and way of conversing and, to be honest, threads/topics such as forums enable suit me best. Tumblr is, for sure, more 'friendly' for my needs but doesn't have that structure in place that allows for reading and participating in conversation and argument. I guess one just ends up in a place where you weigh your pros and cons - I HATE some of the hypocritical, judgmental, assuming, bitter, insulting posts I've seen about both SnL, but I also LOVE some of the posts about them and I value one's right to speak freely. Even if it gets on my last nerve something proper a lot of the time...

Well, that's certainly true for BN fans. I used to be a shipper myself as many of my old posts will attest and I am still fascinated by the SnL relationship, but the behavior of their fervent admirers have really spoiled the joy I used to take in the couple.

Wow, either I'm checking in and reading a completely different forum or I've got pretty thick skin and a realistic approach to everyone in FM.
The band members are human. They have foibles. We know those foibles, we call them out, we bitch about them, engage in a fair bit of hand-wringing but ultimately, if we didn't care we wouldn't be here. At least that's how I see it.
Some people think Lindsey's foibles are endearing and Stevie's are annoying and vice versa and give full voice to both sets of opinions in the various threads. I don't see the problem.

"Pure" crap? Hm. Well the creative process looks to be quite different from what IYD was, if that gives you any hope. But I'm not sure there's any guarantee that a new FM studio album wouldn't be similarly awful. We just have to wait and hope for the best.

Agreed! I love Joan of Arc. I'd forgotten all about that song. Very haunting...at least the demo was.
As for The Ledge, I'm happy to be a member here. I do appreciate the vast array of opinions. Though I am a Stevie fan first and foremost, I don't take any criticism of her personally, like I once did. I'm probably the most critical person of her anyway! This board, for me, has been a great source of information and insight over the years! :D
The array of opinions on this forum is what keeps me coming back, and what makes a lot of other fan forums wear a bit thin for me. I've been a member of a Kate Bush forum where basically every post just sort of devolved into "Isn't Kate Bush awesome? She is AWESOME!" and that makes for a rather tedious discussion after a short while. Having people who live for Stevie Nicks adjacent to a bunch of people who couldn't really care less about her is a dynamic that works really nicely.

she died last Tuesday~
She was originally finished for Patrick at the City of Hope~ he died while she was still in her grey stage~
I finished her in brilliance upon Robins death~ because Robin was brilliant~
May she be a patron of driving this disease away~ it cannot live this cancer~ amongst Rhiannon's bright colors~ she was a bright light girl~ and we will fight on white light"

I'm on cloud nine!
We were all excited four years ago when we heard about a new Stevie record, but opinions as of late on this new solo album are sketchy at best because of the supposed "Fleetwood Mac album hold up" but Dave and Waddy seem to be working quickly. This hasn't been the case with her work since the "Wild Heart" days so maybe this "back to basics" approach to recording an album will be a good thing...as opposed to spending years (and thousands of dollars) on overdubs, re-recording, and over production...I'm looking at you, "Rock A Little".

No. Mixing just means they're getting the right volume levels, resonance, reverb, etc for each individual track recorded.
MASTERING would mean that they're close to finishing up.
The difference between mixing and mastering used to confuse the hell out of me when I was a kid.

For this to be a real return to form I hope the songs have lots of random interjected "well's", lots of shifts from "you" to "she" and "he," and that the album contain several long rambling musings about eg. Castles, and at least one incoherent weepy ballad. Seriously, that is what I would love!

Not necessarily the next step. They could still spend a lot of time tweaking, doing overdubs, harmonies, adding instrumentation, etc (which could possibly take place in L.A. and not Nashville).
However, mastering IS the FINAL step. It's the icing on the cake. It's basically a process of making the each song on an album sound consistent with one another as far as volume, crispness, and audibility.
Hope that helps. :)

But it is safe to assume that the tracks and vocals have all been recorded, right? they wouldn't start mixing if they was still recording to be done?
That also depends. A lot of singers like to record the music and mix it first before going in and putting a vocal track over it. A polished, mixed track can give the vocalist a reason to kick out a good vocal. More inspiring...more feeling. An example of this for Stevie is the making of Bella Donna on the Crystal Visions DVD. The instrumental for her "takes" on "After The Glitter Fades" sound like the final mixed product to me. Same with "Blue Lamp".
However there really isn't any reason she would be in Nashville UNLESS she was putting a vocal track on her songs, so I'm willing to bet they've done a little of both so far. Dave works fast, as we all know, and I'm sure he's been inspiring her.

I agree 100%....Dave Stewart should not be producing this next cd. She might as well be taking musical direction from her assistant Karen. IYD had a handful of old demos remastered and remixed which were cool, but the new stuff was pure Stewart crap. lol No way.
Say You Will was great compared to IYD. Completely uninspired lyrically or sonically.
I tweeted Dave Stewart once reprimanding him for ruining Stevie Nicks and her album. He tweeted something back equally catty - but it makes me feel good to know he's aware there are people out there unhappy with his work with her.
I'm also disappointed she chose to work with him again - even after she went on and on about how much she loved the process.
I know people might not agree, but I WISH she would work with some younger artists and producers. I saw someone suggest she should work with Lady Antebellum which would be a good choice. A part of me wishes she would go rogue and do a dance song or two like she used to. There's a band called "Empire of the Sun" that lists 1977 Fleetwood Mac as a direct reference and inspiration on their work. Imagine Stevie vocals and lyrics on THIS instrumental. It would be a total shock but reinvigorate her career a little - like a modern "Stand Back". It has a very Stevie/FM feel but it's still crazy modern and current. I know she could pull it off: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uHkyFdsYw7M

I think sadly that because Stevie has tended not to have a clear final vision of what her songs should sound like she has been at the mercy of producers who turned her music into what *they* thought it should be. Listening to demos vs final versions it seems like Tom Petty was one of the best at translating her songs pretty closely from her demos. And honestly, I don't know if left to her own devices *she's* the best judge anymore of what her music should end up sounding like. She did have a lot of input on IYD if you judge by the documentary (a bit of a risky assumption) so you can't blame all that on Dave. He seemed to acquiesce mostly to whatever SHE wanted, which appears to be a big part of why she likes to work with him.

I don't think her SYW songs were better than TISL, not except for Thrown Down. I mean, I like EFO as well, but it's really hard to compare it to anything else because of the disco genre. I mean, I guess I could compare it to Stand Back, that's all.

I don't think anyone here is "defending" her, just stating their opinions. And also as opinions go, many music critics had great reviews for IYD. Myself, I thought it was her best ever solo work. Yes, even better than Bella Donna.
If you're going to count success only by how many platinum albums an artist has, especially these days, maybe you should stick to Mylie Cyrus records. I'm sure she's at least triple platinum.

Well, I thought IYD was better than Bella Donna, but Bella Donna wasn't my favorite album anyway. I always liked Wild Heart better.
As for the suggestion that she could work with Lady Antebellum, on a song or two, but for an entire CD? I think they would give us more songs like Think About It, After the Glitter Fades, Kinda Woman and the Highwayman. And I wouldn't like to see an overload of those on one album. Two of the slow and moving types is plenty.

"Pure" crap? Hm. Well the creative process looks to be quite different from what IYD was, if that gives you any hope. But I'm not sure there's any guarantee that a new FM studio album wouldn't be similarly awful. We just have to wait and hope for the best.
Alas, yes. It's at the bottom of the pile along with The Other Side of the Mirror and Street Angel for me. Rubbish. It was just... um... embarassing, IMO. I thought the lyrics were baaaaaad. I hope Dave Stewart doesn't produce her FM songs. Would that ever happen?
Let me add, I would play Bella Donna, Wild Heart, TISL and maybe even Rock A Little to any of my friends.
I would NEVER play them any of the other three.

If you're going to count success only by how many platinum albums an artist has, especially these days, maybe you should stick to Mylie Cyrus records. I'm sure she's at least triple platinum.
You are wrong, success in this industry is counted by how many CDs an artist sells.....and how many concert tickets an artist sells. It doesn't matter whether you are Miley, the Beebs, MJ, the Dixie Chicks or whoever is on the charts today...what matters is how much airplay your music gets, more airplay means more cd sales, which means more ticket sales. The only stevie airplay I hear is the old stuff....the good stuff.

Right, like Mylie Cyrus. Super talent, right? After all, she sells the sh*t outta cds and concert tickets.

Thanks for the info! I never quite understood the difference between mixing and mastering.
It looks like Dave is back in LA - - which seems consistent with his and Mick's "two weeks in Nashville" statements.

Dave Stewart didn't have anything to do with the lyrics on IYD though? Just thought that was worth mentioning if it's your main gripe with the album. I know what you mean, though. I really love IYD but I admit Stevie somehow seemed like a much more mature songwriter in her 20s than she does today, which is something I do find troubling.
For the record, though, I play more than a bit of IYD for friends and it does seem to go down pretty well. I'd probably skip Soldier's Angel and Cheaper than Free, but otherwise... yeah. It seems to connect to people a lot more consistently than WH or TISL do.

I love IYD from start to finish, with the exception of SA and CTF. But I agree, the lyrics on some of the songs (New Orleans, Italian Summer), are surprisingly literal for Stevie. Which is why I would really love for her to record some of her Bella Donna vault songs.

She's had a fair share of lyrical clunkers post-WH though. I mean, most of the non-vault songwriting that was actually hers on RAL isn't all that great or moving. And I'll never forget that moment where I read an interview clip of her talking about how Long Way to Go is actually about her travelling a long way to see someone, and then they break up with her, but she thought they already did that. I think a lot of her lyrics might benefit from a little mystery. ;)

I could have sworn I read somewhere that they wrote songs together which Stevie doesnt normally do.
I agree her songs were more mature when she was younger.

When they describe the actual process of the co-writing, though, it's clear the lyrics are hers alone, and he bangs out some music while she recites them in a "sing-songy" style until they come up with a song. That's how they did most of their writing together. Although I need to correct myself a bit as he did come up with the chorus to ELY and CTF. Not exactly lyrical high points, but not the worst of the bunch either. "What's faster than a fast car? A beating heart!" is all her.
Feel free to still think the album is horrible, though. Personally I'm finding it one of the ones I have more success with when trying to demonstrate what all the fuss over SN is about.

Say You Will was great compared to IYD. Completely uninspired lyrically or sonically.

Stevie's songs on IYD were 1/2 half for me
Cheaper Than Free?
come on, that's just sloppy.
My Heart was ruined
i want to say Annabel Lee was too ... just coz I'm partial to the other versions we prob shouldn't have listened to :D
IYD/Soldiers Angel/Moonlight are perfection
Empire of the Sun are pretty popular over here. Their first CD was very FM-esque musically. But I'd rather her work with Dave Grohl or anyone over Stewart tbh. I like that he has inspired her. but i don't think he is the best for her :sorry:

Dave wrote the music and the chorus to Everybody Loves You; Stevie added the verses.
The music for New Orleans was actually written by Neale Heywood
Regarding the recent Nashville recording session, I would like to think that Stevie had put down some vocals, but I’m not sure there would have been sufficient time for this. From memory, she did record the vocals for the IYD album after the instrumentation had been completed. It’s important to me that she be in good voice whenever this took/takes place because no matter how great the song is, it always stands or falls (for me) on the basis of the vocal delivery. (That was my major problem with some of her contributions to the SYW album.)
Whilst Dave did elicit some wonderful vocal performances from Stevie for IYD, there were parts of which I’m not so fond (the first verse to “Annabel Lee”; the verses and chorus of “In Your Dreams”; the rushed delivery on “Italian Summer” and to some extent, “For What It’s Worth” and the rough take on “The Ghost Is Gone”).
The fast pace of this current recording excites me in some ways, but I am concerned about Stevie's vocals holding up.

I was thinking about this today. 15 tracks in two weeks-no way she sang her best.
Dave wrote the music and the chorus to Everybody Loves You; Stevie added the verses.
In fairness, I did say that in literally the next sentence. ;) But yes, not every song on IYD was a co-write with Dave Stewart done in the way that I described.
I think a great vocal often doesn't take countless cuts to get right. And indeed, if it's taking that long, there might be something greater wrong than just a time crunch. I don't think she'll release an album where she doesn't think she sounds good at any point. And if she does, it'll probably be for reasons other than a time crunch. She's had vocally questionable moments in her studio recordings since RAL, and this album may be no different, but I don't think the time frame will be to blame for that.

I love the concept of recording 15 songs in two weeks. I don't want her to sing her best technically, I want her to sing her most real and unpolished. From her gut, from the basic emotion. Also if it's instable or slightly out of tune in moments. The live-feel. Cool.

These were my initial thoughts too. Although, given her fastidiousness for touching up even her actual live tracks, I doubt this release is going to give us anything like that. I am fairly confident that it'll sound good, though. :)
I don't think she'll release an album where she doesn't think she sounds good at any point.
Agreed, but the problem these days is that Stevie thinks she always sounds ****ing brilliant! Her ego is so out of control that she believes she can sing exactly the same way she did in the 1970's. Stevie doesn't hear the lazy monotone delivery or the harsh belting that has become a mainstay of her performances these days.
Dave encouraged far superior vocals on IYD than were present on TISL and SYW, but he needs to be tougher on her with this next batch.

This is all very exciting, and I can't believe how quickly this all seemed to come together (unless, of course, she and Dave had this planned for a while).
I wonder now when we'll hear this new music. Stevie has a lot of stuff planned with Fleetwood Mac this fall and into early next year. I can't imagine that she'll want to hold the album until next spring, especially if the Mac has plans to release an album next spring or summer. A Nicks album and a Fleetwood Mac album in stores at the same time probably wouldn't be a good idea.
My guess is that Stevie's new disc will be released this fall and she'll promote it while on the road with Fleetwood Mac, much like she did the release of Live in Chicago. Or perhaps she'll get it out in July and spend July and August promoting it via the press.
Who knows? It's all very intriguing.

Stevie very well may owe WB a release next year...Christine's unexpected return and FM's fall tour would have thrown a major wrench in the works as far as what Stevie was planning for 2014...Personally I don't think FM has any plans to put out an album this year or next year...Seems to me that FM is in a rush to get Christine's recording done before something happens...It's better to get her songs recorded now because should something happen like she changes her mind or someone falls ill they already have CM's songs done...What is being worked on now could most likely be for a "Farewell Album" out in 2016...Yes I said 2016...If Stevie owes WB a solo record out in 2015 I don't see them putting out a FM record at the same time...

History would indicate that this is correct since it usually a year or so after we hear about her starting to record and the album being released but something about this one feels different..like it could be out much sooner than we expect.Does anyone know how quickly it could be released if they really wanted to get it out ASAP..I'm thinking like even July :shrug:but I am certainly no expert.

Yes, just the way Mick described the concept of them knocking it out quickly made me think they intended on releasing it quickly too.
I don't know how quickly it could be released. I mean could she do a round of interviews in June to promote it? Then, head back for FM rehearsals in July.
There might be one concert, like at the Wiltern, a listening party and one for the east coast too, but I don't think there would be any other concert dates this year.

Michele
I agree. I think it will be out this summer or fall. It feels different.
I think y'all are setting yourselves up for heartache if you think the album will drop this year. When has Stevie ever released an album (solo or Mac) without touring behind it? Heck, she toured 2 consecutive years behind In Your Dreams... and then did the film festival circuit the 3rd year to promote it's documentary. Stevie is very much a capitalist when it comes to selling her albums... as she famously said, "This is not about art."
I think if anything, she will release the album sometime next year while the Mac is between tour legs or is recording. That way she can throw some solo dates in there. And that's being fairly optimistic in itself. She could hold it longer until she's able to do a full scale tour, and who knows when that will be.

That touring didn't get the album to gold. I'm not sure if she thinks it matters. You are forgetting that she is starting to feel her age.

I agree. I think she's finally realizing she's not going to see albums like she used to. Times have changed drastically, and yes, she is a 65 year old artist. This may be wishful thinking but I have feeling she's gonna drop the album this year ala Beyoncé, with no fanfare. It does seem to go against everything she has done in the past but that may very well be the point.

Alhough it wouldn't be her normal pattern as far as releases go, there's a reason she wanted to get it done this fast.
Plus, as I mentioned before, there's no way her management and FM's management would let a new Stevie solo record and FM drop at the same time. Bad for business on both sides.

At least someone here is being reasonable with their thinking and I agree that fans are just going to be disappointed if they think Stevie is going to record a full album and just throw it out there and basically turn her back on it...
Fleetwood Mac is doing 39 U.S. shows (so far ) this fall...They will probably hit Australia/NZ in February (12 to 15 shows )and UK in March/April ( 20 to 25 shows ) which makes approximately 70 to 80 "Reunion" shows...After that Stevie will do her solo thing and we wont see Fleetwood Mac return for at least a year or two...

We will have to see what Dave tweets. If the album continues to be a work in progress, that's one thing. But if it is pretty much finished according to him, I just don't see her holding it back. The FM tour won't halt album promotion, she can use FM touring as a part of the promotion.
She really promoted IYD in two bursts, not one. I can see her releasing the album this year with some fanfare and then promoting it full scale next year.

But see, Beyonce can do that and sell 2 million copies. People are going to pay attention to anything she does. If Stevie Nicks did that, in 2014, it's just going to come and go without anyone noticing. Just like the EP did.

I'll preface this by saying that I know absolutely nothing about the music distribution process. But even after some quick googling, it sounds like the distribution process (unsurprisingly) doesn't happen overnight, with this one distributor noting a 14-week process:
http://klmdistribution.com/salesanddistribution
Assuming that Stevie isn't planning to drop a digital-only album (unlikely, in my opinion), I realistically don't think we're going to see anything before the end of the year.

Stevie only did a tiny handful of shows to support Bella Donna. She did not commence the RAL tour until over 6 months after that album's release. This time I think this album may actually be more about art than commerce .IYD was likely the final wake up call that she is not going to have gold or platinum albums anymore.

I think most assumed Stevie would join eventually. But it was a question of when. Lindsey now says (with kind of a skeptical tone in his voice) it'll be after the tour which is new information. And it may be a recent conversation where they finalized her involvement in the project. They certainly didn't act as though this was all set in previous interviews. So I don't think it was for no reason. I think we all were hopeful they'd figure something out while also being frustrated about it.

Jimmy Iovine demonstrates that he's a winner, that all the naysayers are wrong. He went on "American Idol" with those godforsaken Beats headphones around his neck and he willed them to be successful. Now that he's unloaded Beats Music, rumor has it that Iovine will be shepherding a return to rock movement, saying it's all about being able to play your instrument and that hip-hop is dead. He will reunite Stevie Nicks and Tom Petty for another duet, maybe around the time of the Apple/Beats launch, Jimmy has always known it's about marketing.

I just read a really fascinating article on Buzzfeed about Beats being bought by Apple. Basically it stated Apple was buying Beats simply for Jimmy Iovine. That Jimmy has somewhat of a midas touch, and that he's been transitioning away from being involved with recording artists in favor of entrepreneurship for years. The article was comparing Iovine to Steve Jobs, and how both Iovine & Jobs are the polar opposite of Apple's current CEO, Tim Cook. Cook is comparatively conservative, quiet, and risk-averse. There was talk of Apple's perceived stagnation since Jobs' death, and how Iovine could bring the currently missing showmanship and risk-taking back to Apple.
So the moral of the story is, I don't think Apple buying Beats by Dre really has anything to do with a rock renaissance or the perceived death of Hip Hop. However, I think it has everything to do with bringing on someone visionary & brash into Apple. The article stated Iovine predicted the downfall of downloaded music (a la iTunes) years ago in favor of streaming content (Spotify, Pandora, iTunes radio, etc). With the recent news that Apple is missing it's targets in iPad sales & lack of innovation in their new iPhones, I think they're just looking to hire someone who can see a bit further down the road in regards to shifting consumer tastes & demands. And that's always been Jimmy's strong suit, and that's where he fits into this equation. :)

I think it is all about conviction. I remember listening to Maybe Love Will Change Your Mind and thinking that she was not committed to giving that song a good vocal at all. She didn't believe in that song even though it was a single. Strange but maybe she was mad at the record company.
She believed in Soldier's Angel and put forth her best. I'm not really a fan of the lyrics - the four years later part really bugs me, however, I love her vocal.
I want committed vocals and some passion.

Yeah. She delivered passionate vocal performances through most of the album. Even on songs I don't particularly like (The Ghosts are Gone). If you didn't really like her vocal style on the album, ok, fair. But suggesting they weren't "passionate" vocals is really missing the mark.

She wasn't committed to most of her recordings between 89-93 due to her Klonopin addiction. I think the vocals on her Behind The Mask songs are the absolute worst of her career.
As far as passion goes, I think she really nailed it with You Can't Fix This. Maybe the lyrics are a little (lot) clunky but her vocal is fantastic.

Totally agree re You Can't Fix This. Don't love the production, but I don't blame that on Stevie. Would love to hear her re-record it with FM. I don't hate her BTM vocals, though - - far better than her SA vocals, IMO. :sorry:

Interesting - for me at least, it's bit too raw, and could benefit from more a polished production. But I've never been a huge Dave Grohl fan. I actually like the lyrics.

Whatever she does on this album, I hope Stevie has pushed herself in her lyrics. What reads well as a poem or journal entry doesn't necessarily translate to a great lyric. In the past twenty years, there have been a lot of her songs with a great verse or a great chorus that are let down by lazy writing in the rest of the song.

If you divide 33 by 8 you get just over 4.1 years between Stevie Solo records!
Counting the two greatest hits packages, Soundstage Sessions and Enchanted it comes out to 2.75 years between releases.
Counting the additional video packages, the HBO special, Redrocks, Soundstage and Documentary it is 2 years between solo "events"
Not counting appearances on soundtracks, guest appearances on other people's albums, the one off "Christmas" things etc.... I would say that she has had a pretty good career in Spurts and Stats and grinding halts. (the period between 2001 and 2011 being the worst!

Stevie's total studio output isn't very impressive considering the total span of her career, even with Fleetwood Mac included. But, it is what it is - I wouldn't give up any of it or wish any of it undone.
I do wish she recorded more frequently, however. She certainly has written enough to have half-a-dozen more albums than she does currently.
But I'm grateful for what she's released, and for all those master reels and demos to make up for what she hasn't released.
:) its ok. I am really intrigued with Stevie's new album. An 8th album. WOW! Not many solo acts get to an 8th album.

Dolly Parton is not the same thing as Stevie Nicks.
Dolly writes SOME of her own songs, maybe more than half, depending on the theme of the album. However, she mostly does covers and sings songs written by other people. Stevie SELDOM records a song written by someone else.
One could also state, and I think even Dolly Parton would agree, that what Dolly records is mostly "Crap" for the sake of "crap" and putting something out. A lot of Dolly's albums are throw away crap. Crap crap crap. No staying power. Dated. Drivel. AND I LIKE Dolly Parton.
Stevie holds her recording to a almost magical altar of magic and treats each song like a child. Unless it is from the Klonapin era she still loves that child. When was the last time she did anything from OSOTM or SA? once? in 1999? ROF?
So yah, I dont think the original poster was talking about interpreters of songs like Dolly, or Linda etc.... but rather solo artists that are songwritters and singers of their own songs.
Being a part of a Band and going solo, not many other artists can do that. Especially a woman. Natalie Merchant comes to mind. But even she LEFT and never went back. Stevie has had 7 and counting solo efforts, plus 8(ish) and counting FM, not counting compilations.

no she's definitely not. she's in a league of her own.
wonder with such huge output whether the number of songs Dolly has actually written is en par or way more than number of songs Stevie has actually written?

Stevie has a ton of songs written by other people.I'd gladly take 42 albums of Stevie even if others thought it was filled with crap. We all have different opinions anyways on which songs of hers are good and which aren't.

Well, by "Crap" I mean more along the lines of Pop for Pop sakes. Studio style mainstream stuff that Dolly recorded because it was a flash in the pan sorta Pop country song. No substance. Just filler.
I think that is Dolly's genius. She can sit there and write a song in 5 minutes just because. Stevie on the other hand needs to ponder it, have a frame of reference, sleep on it, and have this long drawn out process. Very rarely have you heard Stevie tell a story about how she just wrote a song in 5 minutes. Her process is much more laborious.
Dolly is a business women, and maybe even a definition genius. the Ditz routine is an act. She has a brain, despite being a self described "dumb blonde". Stevie....well we know she is not a natural blonde, but she sure can be dumb! haha

Dolly Parton isn't the same thing as anyone, and that's part of her wide appeal.

Dolly has written over 3000 songs. There have been a few albums (out of 42) that have mainly been covers, and she might throw a cover or two on the others, but there has to be somewhere for those 3000 songs to go.

Dolly Parton isn't a good comparison. It would be more accurate to compare Stevie to other artists who've juggled solo careers and band membership fairly concurrently. Which is pretty rare.
For example, Don Henley and Glenn Frey recorded 7 studio albums with The Eagles over the past 42 years, and have recorded 5 solo albums each. Despite a large gap in time when the Eagles were disbanded. Based on similar eras, genres, and fan-bases, their careers are probably the closest analogy to Stevie's.

We have all been wondering what Stevie is up to in Nashville the past week...Unlike with the "IYD" sessions Dave has not tweeted any real details about the events going on...On Saturday (4/26) Mick attended a Jenny Boyd book signing at The Grove and our own "Hello Monster" was in attendance and this is from the transcription of what took place...
So I looks like we may be getting a new Stevie solo album before a new Mac album (how great is this!!! )...
Before everyone goes crazy about Stevie recording in Nashville remember this is where Dave goes when he record his records and when Dave records in Nashville at Blackbird his records are started and finished in 2 weeks...Another thing to keep in mind is that just because Stevie is recording in Nashville at Blackbird it doesn't mean she's making a "country"album...Now that Mick has let the proverbial cat out of the bag let's hope Dave let's us in on what's going on...
I wish it was a country record.LOL..
I'm still shocked and caught off guard with this awesome news about Stevie is recording a solo record.

I don't believe that all these vault songs are going to be released as they are..Juila was pretty much fully produced by Iovine who did not like the song.Of course there is no guarantee that it will be on the album but IMO is the best of her songs that have never seen an official release yet.

I'd absolutely love if Stevie re-recorded "Julia" for this album. I love the flavor her latter-day voice adds to these old songs. I do still hope, however, that the 'Bella Donna' era outtake of "Julia" someday finds a home on a remastered edition.
This is very exciting news all around. I'm so thrilled! Years ago when my ex and I would "talk Stevie," I had a wishlist of things I had hoped she'd do over the next several years. I wanted a new album, a live DVD, a collection of her "vaulted" songs, and a DVD of her videos. They came in a different order, and slower than I might have hoped, but how cool that every one of them will ultimately have been checked off.

I just don't think Dave, no matter how good, can work out arrangements for that many songs that fast. Leads me to think that Stevie and crew had culled the songs earlier, and given them to Dave-- or just the links to youtube!-- and he had time to listen to them, come up with ideas, maybe even rough out (or more) some/all of the arrangements and get some basic music tracks down (drums/piano/guitar) and then got Stevie in to do vocals during those two weeks.
Fourteen days (give or take) to work out from the ground up 18 songs is just too much..
Once her vocal stuff is done, he can keep fiddling with the tracks, adding layers.
In any event, we are getting potentially lots of new Stevie music, so however they made it work is good

I'm curious to see how may songs were actually cut. In the AP interview, Stevie suggested that they recorded 17 out of the 18 songs they brought to Nashville. But in her acceptance speech, she noted that they recorded all 18 songs.
Stevie has the memory of a Goldfish sometimes. And she embellishes A LOT! I'm going with Dave Stewart's tweet and say that they probably really recorded just 15 songs.

But then again, he said, "15 songs and STILL WORKING" so maybe they did do two or three more.

^Interesting. So that would suggest Stevie is still recording at her home. That's definitely the staircase at her house. I wonder how much was really completed in Nashville, and what ends need to be tied up back in LA?

I don't remember hearing that "the girls" were at Blackbird doing backing vocals so that's one of many loose ends they may be tying up at Stevie's house/studio...
15 songs!!! :blob2: Well, that should shut up all the naysayers who've claimed Stevie had no material! I doubt that all these 15 songs were composed in under 2 weeks! Steve fans have known that she's been writing new stuff back in 2012.
I keep hoping that Dave releases a snippet ala "Everybody Loves You" when he did in Feb. 2010 to whet our appetite! So excited! Stevie you're a force!!
i thought i'd bump the post above, being singled out numerous times as one of the naysayers - it nicely goes together with some thoughts people have expressed in this thread so far:
On the one hand, this is pretty cool because her demos are beloved among fans and it's kind of awesome that she realized that and is recording them. If they turn out well, this could be great, and something really nice to have.
However... on the other hand... one of the reasons I was so shocked/excited about the new album was because I couldn't believe that she had been writing that much. And now it turns out she hasn't and it's all old songs. Additionally, all of those songs were written when she had a very different vocal timbre and range so it will be interesting to see if she just goes for it vocally or if she alters them to fit her current voice. And there's a bit of a risk factor either way in that regard. So I don't know, I have mixed feelings.
Yeah, that was my initial reaction as well. Sadness that she didn't have anything new to share with the world. However, maybe she's just cleaning out all of the old material so she'll have a clean slate of new material to bring to the upcoming Mac album?
I feel the same way about all of this, but let's hope for the best. There are so many of her demos that I absolutely adore...
i can see how much enjoyment fleshing out the old promising songs can bring to fans, and it makes me happy you all will be able to get this. (yes, i would love to see demos like Deep Dense and Given Thing come to life on a proper release; however i do want to hear new music from my guy first, to see where he is currently, artistically.)
maybe this album is a way to get whatever SN still owed to WB out of the way in the fastest way possible. even if she did start on this route with Without You as her contribution to FM. plus the whole box sets of old demos and unreleased songs is something many older artists do, in between other projects, and something their fans can cherish and anybody wishing to learn about their artistic process can study.

She's probably also figuring, why not?
Every single Stevie Q & A event I went to the past couple years someone brought up doing/finishing the demos. She even mentioned in the recent BMI interviews that she was doing it because fans had brought it up. So there's that too. I suppose that it also fits in nicely with the time frame she currently has along with her record contract commitments. It's a win-win.
The only thing that bugs me is that it will be released in the middle of a Mac tour, which will give her little time to promote it. But as someone said on another thread, maybe just the exposure alone of the tour will help.
Jamie
I'd be surprised if Steve actually recorded any vocals in Nashville - I reckon that only the instrumentation was laid down during that period. She has previously spoken about the great sound that was achieved when recording her vocals near the staircase of her home for the IYD album so perhaps that's the next part of the process?

They also could have done the music live in one studio with Stevie behind another booth on an isolated track and singing along, and they are redoing the vocals and dubbing them over. This is common and I think is how BellaDonna and Rumours were done.

I agree. And frankly Stevie doesn't often get a full vocal from start to finish in a single take. A lot of them are compilations of bits from various takes. And she layers her vocals, adds harmonies and then all the girls' vocals etc. She doesn't need a big studio for that work nor to pay a bunch of musicians to hang around.

And each instrument is likely miced by itself as well. Then if they want to bring it up in the mix, eliminate it, or redub it altogether they can in post production and mixing. BUT i have a feeling this album will be most "done" already if she is already doing vocal overdubs.

Today I listened to In Your Dreams for the first time in a long time, all the way through, and I'm so impressed with Dave's treatment of Stevie's songs. Annabel Lee in particular - I love how true to the demo he stayed.
Also, Stevie's vocals are so good - the best vocals she's recorded, really, since The Other Side of the Mirror. Her Street Angel vocals are strong, but tired sounding. Her Shangri La vocals are a bit monotone overall, though there are some great moments in each track. Every track on In Your Dreams (except the dreary Soldier's Angel) features an enthusiastic vocal from Stevie, and shows her zeal and love for the album.
I feel really good about 24 Karat Gold, no matter the tracklisting, and my life-long love of Stevie's music feels very refreshed right now.

Right. This is called a "scratch vocal" and a lot of vocalists do this while the rest of the band is tracking each take. It helps them with the change ups ~ when a verse goes into the chorus, bridge, etc. If Stevie did anything in Nashville, it was probably this, as well as overseeing how the musicianship of each song took shape.

Nicely put!! I revisited IYD just the other night and thoroughly enjoyed it, though I still listen to it on a fairly regular basis. I really love how Dave produced each song very differently, so each one is unique and sounds fresh. Italian Summer always puts a smile on my face!

"Italian Summer" is my favorite from that album as well, with "Wide Sargasso Sea" coming in second.
I honestly have never been impressed with "Annabel Lee" but that's not Dave's fault. The song was unimpressive from the outset. He's not my top choice for a producer but I can't complain about the output level he seems to enable.

Totally agree! I used to downright LOATHE the demo of "Secret Love". Still do, actually. But when I heard the "new" version, complete with a great vocal by Miss Nicks, I really enjoyed it! I'm glad Dave and company turned such a boring song into a gem.

NICE! I love me some trumpet on a good rock song, or even a string and horn ballad. R.E.M.'s "Finest Worksong" with trumpets on "Eponymous" was pretty awesome. Rufus Wainwright's trumpets on "The Consort" and "Slideshow" made those ballads amazing and goosebumpy (yes, I'm making up words now).
Can anyone else think of any Stevie song that have had some nice horns (meaning trumpets and French horns ~ NOT saxophone)?

I generally agree with you- stuff like Chicago's music doesn't really do much for me. However, there are some instances where horns in pop/rock music can be pulled off. There's a song called Control on Broken Bells new album After The Disco which has a brass solo at the end, and it works. It still kind of surprises me Stevie didn't incorporate any horns into New Orleans since that city is known for Jazz, but I guess she decided not to go that literal.

I just remember hearing Pack Up the Plantation, Tom Petty's first live recording. He had just make Southern Accents, which had some horns on it (which I didn't mind, since they fit with the songs), but on that tour he had a horn section and he added them to some of his great rock songs, and that totally ruined those live versions for me. Anyway, I don't want to belabor my point. I'm happy that Stevie is doing this and as long as there aren't horns on a majority of the songs, it will be fine :)

One of the benefits of working in Nashville is that if you want something all you have to do is ask and minutes later it (horns) shows up...It could be the Dave said "I wonder how it would sound with horns" so they were called in...Just because they had some horns in the studio it doesn't mean they (horns) will be prominently featured...The tweeter (Vinnie Ciesielski ) said they helped in a small way so by the time the final mix on the record is done the horns might be barely noticeable or they might not make the final cut at all...

Oh Man. She Loves Him Still is in my top 5 favs of Stevie demos. I don't think it will make the record but I really wish it would. But part of the reason I love it is because of her fragile, broken vocal. Not sure if I would love it as much with her current voice. Mirror Mirror, on the other hand, I think she could totally nail. I know it's been released already but she could redo it, if she and Dave both felt strongly enough. I don't think anything is off the table for this record.

As others have said, a 1985 recording of Mirror Mirror made during the sessions for Rock A Little was released as the b-side for Blue Denim, on cassette only, in 1994. It is not a Street Angel version. It is the RAL version. It's as perfect and cocaine-fueled as this song will ever get. Stevie will never top that vocal, or create more atmosphere for the song than she did here.
The only Street Angel version of Mirror Mirror is an unreleased recording circulating amongst fans, first shared here on The Ledge.
They are very, very different recordings.
