View Full Version : Dave mentions Stevie's "forthcoming album" in new Billboard article

I found this article, published on Friday, while scouring the internet for news about Stevie's new project. It's nothing too new, but it is yet another confirmation about Stevie's solo album, and this article also confirms that it is indeed separate from Dave's own solo album.
Dave Stewart Stands Up To Cancer, Talks New Solo Album
June 04, 2010 - Rock and Pop
By Mitchell Peters
One morning last fall, musician Dave Stewart woke up with an idea for a new song. But unlike any of his past material, the tune was about inspiring those struggling with cancer.
"I just had this 'stand up, stand up, stand up to cancer' thing going on in my head," Stewart says of the lyrics, which became the chorus to the uplifting track "Stand Up to Cancer."
Just days before, Stewart had a conversation with film composer Hans Zimmer, who encouraged him to speak with Stand Up to Cancer co-founder Laura Ziskin about getting involved with the charitable organization. So while waiting for his kids to get ready for school, Stewart wrote a sketch of the track with an acoustic guitar and music software on his laptop.
The song has since become the anthem of Stand Up to Cancer. Now, a video -- directed by Jesse Dylan and featuring Joss Stone, violinist Ann Marie Calhoun and celebrities like Rob Lowe and Renée Zellweger -- has been uploaded to YouTube as part of the "Up2 You" video challenge. The contest, which ends July 30, invites YouTube users to upload their own renditions of the song. In late August, a voting committee (including Stewart, Ziskin and Dylan) will award a grand-prize winner a Takamine guitar valued at nearly $4,000.
On Sept. 10, Stand Up to Cancer will host a telethon from which all proceeds will go directly to cancer research. The fund-raiser will be broadcast simultaneously for one hour on networks including ABC, CBS and NBC.
Aside from his charitable work, Stewart says he's been writing songs with Stevie Nicks for her forthcoming solo album. "We're going to start recording the album ... in three weeks time," he says. And in mid-July, he'll travel to Blackbird Studio in Nashville to record a new album of his own.
"I haven't made a solo album for 13 or 14 years," he says, noting that his new music is reminiscent of Neil Young's 1972 album, "Harvest." The new songs "sound like me with a very low voice," Stewart says, adding that some tracks are "acousticy" and "kind of empty but atmospheric."
Stewart also points out that the solo album will be released only on vinyl. "But on the cover somewhere on the vinyl, there's a CD sunk in as part of the artwork," he says. "So if it was that Van Gogh painting, it would be the sun."

From this news I gather that Dave worked with Stevie on some demos and now they are ready to record the actual album. And they're gonna do it in 3 weeks. Then he's off to Nashville to work on his own thing.
Ann Marie Calhoun and Joss stone were mentioned in some of Dave's tweets as people who were working with Stevie. Or I read somewhere that Stevie was producing Joss Stone for the Country Rumours version.
Anyhoo it all sounds positive to me. I can't wait for this album!

He must believe that it will be recorded within 3 weeks, because otherwise he wouldn't say he's recording his own album in mid July. That seems like a tall order though.

Yeah, this whole Stevie/Dave recording chapter just has me perpetually scratching my head. Everything he's shared from the beginning has been so atypical of Ms Nicks and the way she works. It seems every new detail we receive, my sense of foreboding grows stronger, too. That we either won't get this album in a timely fashion at all, or it won't be up to snuff quality-wise. I guess time will tell... but for once it seems, I'm actually not looking forward to a new Stevie album at ALL. It's so strange...

What's atypical about this? When was the last time she put out a record and we had Twitter and Dave stewart to give us information about it?
I think she's working the way she always works. Lindsey is the one who likes to spend months and months in the studio. Stevie, as she has said herself many times, likes to get in, get out, and get on the road. This IS her MO. Remember that photoshoot she did in Marina Del Rey, on 4/20? It's likely enough, that what will become the cover of the new album is already on some computer being airbrushed, somewhere.
It's 2010, and it's Stevie and Dave Stewart... The album will almost certainly be 'up to snuff, quality wise'.
Now, whether or not we get this in a timely fashion, I obviously don't know. But there's nothing atypical about the speed, or manner in which this album is allegedly being recorded.

Stevie has a billion songs shes just had around for forever, and If they have been working on songs since Feb. it does make sence they could have the hole thing finished in about a month. i mean joe shmo can record an album in a day in his garage or basement now. this is not the 70s,80s, or 90's anymore. and with Dave being up on technology and being an experienced producer AND being someone she already knows who's also friends with Tom Petty, it comes as no surprise really that this could all actually happen..

But that's the point, she's had songs around forever, (who's to say that she'll be recording any of them though) so it shouldn't be any different with this project should it? She usually works with people she knows, so I don't see how having Dave Stewart involved would speed up the process at all. Look at what happened with Sheryl Crow producing some of TISL. Those two couldn't sneeze without being photographed together for a while, that's how close they were, and still it didn't expedite getting that cd released. I'm not saying it isn't possible, but if you go by her previous releases it's not probable.

Are you guys forgetting that they actually recorded The Wild Heart in 12 days? Apparently they started working on this album back in February, so for them to get everyone ready and have all their demos worked out how they want them and their voices where they want and go into the studio this month and finish recording in two to three weeks is not that insane. However, what comes after the recording may take a while.

That's right. The Wild Heart was done in twelve days. Fleetwood mac was done in a month. I bet she has 8 songs done with Dave, they may need extra work. Leather and Lace was kept as a demo if I remember correctly, just some extra instruments. Special Friends—Tom Petty, Sheryl Crow, Mike Campell... the usual.

I remember reading a Stevie interview where she was talking about how disenchanted she was with the recording industry and the internet but also spoke of her love of singing and recording music regardless of how many people heard her songs and she made mention of just releasing an album available in Starbucks or something like that.... for some reason I think it was a coffee chain... do you think her new album may be released that way?

First of all, I am beyond thrilled that something is coming. That being said, I can't help but feel a little bit of dread at the same time. I dunno... Dave strikes me as someone that overpromises and under-delivers. Dream on, silly dreamer. He hasn't done anything particularly fabulous in decades, and even the last couple of new eurythmics tunes were kinda meh. And he comes across as the Ed Wood of music in his tweets. He works very, very quickly, and everything is "amazing." He's no tortured artist. I also find it disturbing that he will be starting his own solo album immediately after Stevie's. Will he be watching the clock the entire time? Perhaps he should consider the old adage- less is more.

YES!!! Finally a solid confirmation from Dave in a reputable trade mag that Stevie is recording a new SOLO cd. But Stevie...Please, Please....say NO to any Taylor Swift special appearance!! At this point in Stevie's career I really don't care for her to have any current artists on her new cd. I do however think it would be terrific if Stevie & Tom Petty reunited for a killer duet.
I have positive feelings about this new release:). It's been the longest span of time between brand new solo work, and I believe that Stevie wouldn't release anything she wouldn't be absolutely proud of at this point, especially after SYW left a bad taste in her mouth. Also this is the follow up to Stevie's self professed "masterpiece" TISL, and you can bet that she has been working hard to come up with great material, & possibly supplementing it with a couple of old fan favorite demo's.

You're correct. This whole experience thus far has been very atypical of how Stevie normally operates. I think this MAY be what Dave meant by his now infamous "making (an) album in a whole new way" tweet. It's a "whole new way" for Stevie to be making an album. (Although it sounds like the Wild Heart may have been done in a similar fashion, and look how great that turned out!). And I disagree about the end result of this project. Stevie herself has said that she gets antsy in the studio if she's in there for too long. I feel that working quickly and keeping the momentum going will only improve the end result. I think it will be far more inspired affair. I just hope the cover art is kick ass!

"We're going to start recording the album ... in three weeks time," he says.
I understood Dave's comment to mean that they would start recording the album in three weeks - not complete it in that time. The Billboard article was published on June 4 so the interview would have taken place before that - possibly two or three weeks ago.
Dave recently said that he and Stevie would resume work in early June so I'm supposing that the recording sessions have already commenced, which would allow most probably about six weeks for them to complete the sessions. If, however, the album is not finished by then, there is no reason they couldn't pick up where they left off at a later date (ie after Dave has completed his Nashville sessions). They've already done this so far - they worked from February to April and have resumed in June.
Of course, the mixing and post production twiddling is a whole other story but I can't see why the recording couldn't be completed by mid July.

Were you around in the online Mac/Stevie community when TISL was being recorded and released? We actually got a great deal of info about the recording of the album through the 'net. We even had snippets of quite a few songs leaked to us fans. Stevie also did an online Q&A/chat through AOL. This newest album of Stevie's isn't the first time us fans have been kept abreast of things as they progress. We knew exactly what was going on the whole time with TISL... we knew Dallas Austin was to produce, that fell through. We knew Sheryl Crow was to produce... that didn't last terribly long. It all just kept getting pushed back ad nauseam... which is kinda typical in Stevie land :).
My fear of quality comes almost solely from the snippet of "Everybody Loves You." To me, Stevie's vocal sounded uninspired, and the whole thing had a very icky Adult Contemporary vibe to it. I'm not trying to be a Negative Nancy at all here... I want Stevie to do something amazing. I would LOVE to see her shake up her formula. I'm just not convinced she's doing it in the right way. But I'll more than gladly eat my own words if I turn out to be wrong... and I *DO* hope I'm wrong!

All I would say is that the snippet of Everybody Loves You was really just so short... Would be like basing your opinion on the snippet of the New Orleans song...
But I know the adult contemporary vibe you're talking about, and I'm not really a fan of it either. She tried it with 'Everyday' on TISL kind of, and it sucked. Fall From Grace, on the other hand, rocked.
Anyway, who knows.

ahh, your still in there somewhere.
I for one am absolutely thrilled to bits that Stevie is finally working with Dave after all these years. It saddened me that their brief exchange in 1984 didn't come to fruition but now there is a chance to make up for lost time.
We also need to consider the alternative - the only other producer she has mentioned working with in recent years is the god-awful David Foster when she spoke briefly on NBC Today in 2007 about possibly recording a standards/blues album with him. This of course could still happen at some stage, but in the meantime, we are getting original material instead of covers and an inspired (at least in my opinion) producer in Stewart as opposed to a schlocky, definitely middle-of-the-road, boardroom exectuive like Foster.
Last year, Lindsey mentioned Dave Stewart, Daniel Lanois and Rick Rubin as possible candidates for co-producer of the proposed Fleetwood Mac album and whilst I approve of all three choices, I suspect Lanois and Rubin were his ideas rather than Stevie's. By all means, if she collaborated with either or both of them on her solo album, I would be chuffed but I do prefer the idea of her completing the project with one producer for the sake of continuity and consistency.

Your fear based on a snippet of a demo of "Everybody Loves You" seems really premature (of course everyone is entitled to their own opinion). Clearly the snippet Dave leaked is them fleshing out the bones of the song. And I for one have no illusions that Stevie's new solo record will include include adult contemporary material. Stevie has always had a wide variety of music on each release all the way from the beginning, whether it be the soft ballads like "Landslide", "Leather & Lace" & "I Miss You" to more rocking songs like "Edge of 17" "Long Way To Go' & "Fall From Grace" and everything in between. And I for one don't expect Stevie to put out a more rocking than usual outing at 62 years of age.
Also in the years before TISL was released, there was very little info leaked (but much speculation amongst fans) as I recall, and I did have my eye's and ear's plugged in to the few mentions in interviews from Sheryl Crow while she was promoting the Globe Sessions that she had worked w/ Stevie on some Buckingham Nicks era songs & may resume when her schedule permits, a tiny mention in Us or People magazine in late 99' that Stevie was working with Dallas Austin after loving "Unpretty" by TLC & finally word in Sept. 2000, when Stevie staged her Arizona Heart Benefit, as reported in a Phoenix paper that recording on TISL was finished. All the press and leaks did not happen until the promotion machine was in full throttle starting with the official PR kick-off, which was an article & interview with Stevie in Billboard Magazine Feb. 2001 announcing the details of the recordings and official release date. Warners/Reprise started streaming the songs "Everyday" & "Planets of the Universe" on their official web site mid March, It was only after this that some fan's who had the promotional advance release in their hands, started leaking snippets of songs on fan boards like this staring late March through April just weeks before the official release. Then full blown promotion began in April, with the video release and tie in w. VH1 & the AOL interview etc. etc.
That's a long way to go to demonstrate that Stevie is really not working any differently than what she has done before. & believe me, as a die hard fan from 81' until now I remember every gory detail. Stevie will not confirm details of the recordings until there is something more substantial to report, til' then we will have to rely on snippets from those working with her (as in the past) to get small information bites to speculate on ad-nauseum.

Stevie will not confirm details of the recordings until there is something more substantial to report, til' then we will have to rely on snippets from those working with her (as in the past) to get small information bites to speculate on ad-nauseum.
I will have to disagree slightly here. In years past, it seems like Stevie always answered questions about her future endeavors with definitive information. For example, while promoting The Wild Heart, Stevie boasted in interviews that her new solo album would be released within a year (which obviously didn't happen). Later interviews from that era actually mentioned Rock a Little as the title of the as-yet-unfinished album. We knew the title for Street Angel a year or two prior to its release. And we knew since the late nineties that Stevie's next solo album would be titled Trouble in Shangri-la- a reference to OJ Simpson. And this was all before the mainstream ubiquity of the interwebs. This time everything is top secret despite the 24-hour news cycle and the proliferation of gossip blogs and online chatter. Stevie's interviews all last year gave us conflicting, vague information about future prospects. She was revved up to record with Fleetwood Mac one minute, then bashing Lindsey the next. She was doing something with "Rhiannon" one minute, then lamenting the futility of releasing new music the next. We are now unofficially (i.e., not from publicists, record labels or mainstream media outlets) aware of three Stevie projects in the works (solo album, Rumours tribute, Buddy Holly tribute), but not a peep from the source. And there was barely any mention anywhere of the August concert dates either. We have no release dates, no title information, no interviews, no website updates, etc. Nada. This is not standard protocol for Mama. I can understand her wariness about online social media and her desire for privacy. But I think her guardedness here is potentially sabotaging the success of her projects. But then again, this may all be part of a master plan- to stir up anticipation and speculation. All I can say is thank goodness for Dave Stewart.

^^^ All good points. But obviously during Stevie's solo heyday from Bella Donna through say OSOTM especially, news about Stevie's forthcoming projects were more reported on in music & trade magazines such as Rolling Stone, Billboard & ICE etc. than they ever would be today. And only after Stevie's renaissance with "The Dance" success, did we get tidbit's of information reported in the press about TISL, mostly through Sheryl Crow late 1998 and a few thereafter. Yes, Stevie did mention in a few interviews during "The Dance" - "Enchanted" period, the title of her next solo project, and the inspiration from the O.J. trial, I only debate that we did not know exactly what was going on with TISL from 1998 through 2000, only speculation from the tidbit's of info. The only thing different is that Stevie was riding the success of "The Dance" there f0re much more anticipation was around regarding the new solo cd & we knew the title & the possible inclusion of Buckingham Nicks era songs. I never knew until early 2001 after the Billboard interview, that she even worked with John Shanks to finish up the recording sessions.
So let the speculation continue....It is fun, and Dave's tweets keeps our appetite wet in anticipation of the longest drought of new solo material from Stevie ever!

Well, like Christopher, I think part of the reason for the silence is just that she's not being interviewed as much as she was then. She could still get the word out using the social network, but there's the wariness you mentioned. If people were still clamoring to interview her the old fashioned way like they were then, I think we'd know a lot more. I don't think she's being especially clandestine, so much as I think it's just that she doesn't have the outlet she traditionally used to get info out (print, radio and tv interviews) and she hasn't adapted to the new forms of communication.
I think if you stuck a mic in her face, she might tell us a lot more, just like she did in days of yore.

I'm with you here, Michele, I think...but I'm torn. If Stevie really wanted to be interviewed, couldn't her publicist get her a couple? Isn't that part of a publicist's job? And she's being photographed outside her favorite steakhouse so it seems there's still a respectable amount of interest in her and what she's doing. But I don't know how the industry works. Who initiates interviews in the first place? The interviewer or the person being interviewed? I'm wondering if her silence could be due in part to her just being emmersed in the creative/recording process and she'd rather talk about it when there's actually something to talk about. Maybe she's in her "mad scientist" mode and doesn't want to be bothered until the whole thing begins to fully take shape.

I totally agreed with all of your initial speculations. Not to be a buzz kill, but I'm (so) afraid what will happen after Dave leaves the project in Stevie's hands. In post production she could easily decide to shelve the entire work. She's done that to several projects. Yet, she is way overdue to release some new music, and she's not getting any younger! Perhaps, realizing this, she is taking a more atypical approach. I certainly hope so.

Good to see Dave Stewart busy these days. You may remember Dave as the creative partner of Annie Lennox in the Eurythmics. Dave worked with Ringo Starr on the Liverpool 8 album, is currently working with Stevie Nicks on her next solo album, and in July Dave is going to Nashville to work on his own solo LP which will be released only on vinyl.
But the project that really caught my attention was his involvement with the Stand Up To Cancer organization. Dave composed a song and worked with Joss Stone on the official recording. There is a challenge for people to upload their own version of this song on YouTube. The deadline is July 30th. Dave will be on the committee that will pick a winner in late August. And on September 10, Stand Up For Cancer will host a telethon to raise money for cancer research.

A publicist/manager is the one who, not only seeks out media outlets, but also decides which media inquiries to pursue. The reason no information is coming from Stevie's camp is because there is nothing official and it's too early. It's not a matter of indifference, as if the media isn't interested or doesn't care about her anymore. That's just irrational reasoning. And the thing about social networks: if you know anything about Stevie, then you know modern day internet media is not her thing. When Stevie is ready to give interviews the media outlets will be there.
The album is a work in progress - there is no product to promote yet! So why should we expect anything? Dave Stewart, as a producer, is the only reason we know anything about this. He's made no formal statements other than in casual conversation that he has been working with Stevie. Stevie is, by no means, obligated to say anything. Again -- it's a work in progress. Who knows what will become of it when Dave leaves. Stevie sometimes brings in other producers, and there is usually a lot of post-production.
Stevie will rise up in pillars of color when it becomes a fully-fleshed out album and it will be properly promoted.

What makes me so excited about this forthcoming solo album (if it happens) is that it will be the first time Stevie has released a new solo album since I've been a hard-core fan. It's not a matter of indifference, as if the media isn't interested or doesn't care about her anymore. That's just irrational reasoning.
But in the old days, if there were rumors that she was working with Dave Stewart, at least a few music reporters would have sought her out for comment. They wouldn't have waited to be approached. Or the story would have gotten a lot of wire coverage, along the lines of Sheryl Crow joining the band (both in 2003 and 2009). Those were just rumors too. That didn't stop everyone from reprinting the gossip 60million times. With this story, even though Dave leaked a snippet of the song, I haven't seen it get copied more than a handful of times.
If this was a story of Stevie (or Dave) working with the Jonas Bros. there'd be non-stop media inquiries about it. But because of the stage they're at in life, the interest is different. Which is not to say it's non-existent. Of course, when something official is announced it will make the music news rounds. We just aren't getting the same advance information or specutlation (from people other than diehard fans) that we would have gotten in the eighties.

Also factor in this age of immediacy of media that we live in.
I just wonder- what IF this new Stevie cd- coming this fall, I still have faith-- what if it turns out to be a hit? If the cd is selling, and she's on the radio, into next year, promoters will be happy to book Stevie solo in 2011 at less than half of what it would cost them to buy Fleetwood Mac's services.
Might we not see Fleetwood Mac back until 2012?

When he says huge, I don't think he means Lady Gaga huge. Huge in a Stevie Nicks 2010 way. And of course Soundstage didn't sell a whole lot. It brought in some sales and had its perks, but it was nothing new and the album itself was lacking immensely. Landslide, Sara, Stand Back, and If Anyone Falls were the only Stevie hits on the album. Us die hard fans were longing for new stuff and the casual fans looked at it and said, what?! No Rhiannon? No Edge of Seventeen? No Dreams?? No Gold Dust Woman? I liked what Stevie did with Soundstage and how she decided to put some not so well known songs on it, but I think the album fell short with the fact that it had so few songs on it and several covers. And the DVD was great too, but the DVD was more expensive and a lot of non-hardcore Stevie fans don't want to take the time or money to pay 15-20 dollars and watch a 2 hour show. However, I think new material would do a lot better seeing as all the hardcore fans will buy it and casual fans will be more open to buying it because it is new instead of it being a live CD that is lacking their favorites. But I do agree that VH1 should team up with her again. Or Apple. If she could get her name plastered all over iTunes and have one of her songs played in an iPhone commercial, it could work wonders.

I'm hoping this new cd will be a creative high for her and that Stevie records her best album. I'd like for it to sell great, yes, but more than that, I want it to be great. Those of us who have believed in her talent for so long, know that she has it in her, and I feel, can't speak for other fans, that Stevie has yet to release her 'ultimate album', so I think it's great she's going after it.
While she has 'nothing to prove' at this stage, it would be great if she could make an album that she will forever know is a good representation of what she has to offer, the best that she could do, and an album she loves.
I still really give Stevie such credit for not taking what would have been an big payday of millions of dollars to do an abbreviated version of Unleashed on the current Eagles tour. I guess it's hard to turn down a ton of money, and she did it. Almost immediately, she began work on new music.
Luckily, from my perspective, I think she was approached at the completely wrong time about The Eagles tour. She hadn't even returned home yet from the final shows when talk of the Eagles pairing came up.
That mistake of her being asked too soon is one I am grateful for, because I think if Stevie had been approached about it after having a month or two off, she would have been more tempted by the big payday. Imagine, it's said that Mick, John, and Lindsey were all agreeable to it. Stevie had bigger balls than all of them to turn it down!!

Well, I don't think she's gonna have Gaga sales. But I think she could have a platinum selling cd if there are two 'career' songs on it that radio just can't ignore. The right few songs could make the album sell well. I don't think her last 2 releases had the 'right few songs' to break the albums hugely. Yes, her age and radio airplay is a big factor. I think it's possible. Likely?

I completely disagree with you on some points. The casual fan has plenty of options (product) to obtain the popular songs. If they are a causal fan then they probably already have those songs, likely on more than one CD. Most people were indifferent to Soundstage Sessions because they've seen and heard it all before...in better form.
The premise that more of her popular songs weren't on the album was the reason her live album didn't sell more is faulty. In fact, her well-known songs have suffered for being over-exposed and over-done. If she included new, inspired original material (aside from the cover songs), at least it would have been a success from an artisic perspective. Perhaps one of the new songs could have been a hit, thus redefining Stevie as a current force. Alas, she's driven a limited amount of her signiture songs into the ground. Most artists of her age and career length do give credence to the songs that made them famous, but they don't hold on to them for dear life -- they move on artistically and create new signiture songs, something new to redefine themselves. Stevie has stagnated, both musically and in image for the last decade or so...just coasting on a small collection of old well-worn songs.
It's kind of sad to see her try to maintain the image of who she was when she was in her twenties, like the twirls everyone expects her to do in her sixites. It's so expected and so reduntant...we've seen this act a million times before. It's not reasonable to expect her to sell as much as she did in during her heyday in the eighties, but it's time to move on.
Nikolaj
06-24-2010, 12:10 AM
^^^PenguinHead- wow. The part about being who she was in her 20s, 'still twirling after all these years' is a haunting observation. I agreed with you most about the songs from 30+ years ago being 'unleashed' far too often and having worn them into the ground. Sad, that.
Happily, though, I think she is addressing it as we type, recording new music we hope to have this fall.
This new cd could change a lot of how she decides to perform (and what she chooses to sing) from now on, if she is especially fond of the new material and knows that as you say, it's time to move on, or 'add to' who she was, as it surely is time.
I hope she feels encouraged and happy. I think we are likely to get some interesting choices this summer if she knows her fans still have faith in her talent, that we'll be there, and we're glad that she still performs for us.

Oh I completely agree from a average to hardcore fan's perspective. That was the part I meant when I said we wanted new while casual fans were looking for her hits. By casual fans I mean those people who don't go out and buy all of her albums, who liked some of her songs back in the day and maybe bought some of her records but she was never one of their favorites and today they have Timespace or possibly Crystal Visions and they are standing in line at Best Buy and they see oh hey, Stevie Nicks has a new live album, but they don't know any of these songs. And Stevie has never released a full live album before, so as far as live versions go I don't think casual fans would have many live versions, if any at all. I agree, I am so tired of the same hum drum she shoves down our throat, and that is why Soundstage didn't fare well with fans, but she did use a lot of songs that haven't been done to death and those didn't fare well with her casual fans either. Point being, Soundstage should not be a judge as how well a new studio album from her will do.

It's nice that some of you here have been able to see Stevie live enough times (or have heard enough bootlegs) to be tired of many of the older tunes, but do remember that some of us newer fans haven't had the chance to see her perform at all beyond video recordings.
I know I won't get the chance to see her unless she comes a little closer to home, which probably isn't happening on this summer tour or excursion or whatever she's up to. But I know I certainly wouldn't mind hearing the hits as I'm far from tired of them, even counting all the times I've heard the album versions or heard live recordings. Of course, my obsessive love of the Mac/Stevie has developed relatively recently, so I'm still discovering all kinds of new things. I think there are bound to be lots of newer fans who don't frankly care about the setlist and just want to see Stevie perform (until they became older fans, and by then there will be new newer fans who just want to see Stevie perform, if she'd even be performing by then).

Well, I don't think she's gonna have Gaga sales. But I think she could have a platinum selling cd if there are two 'career' songs on it that radio just can't ignore.
Sadly, I don't think radio's going to give more than a cursory mention of Stevie when her new CD drops. They might play her new song maybe once, maybe twice, then they might shift over and play her classics a little bit more.
She'd practically have to go down on every radio exec there is for them to play her, and that just ain't happening.
The upshot is that her record might still do well enough to bring in some new fans and give her diehards a chance to see her live again.

I'm smiling too! Those guys (Mike Campbell/Mick Fleetwood) are great influences for Stevie. I hope this new album hits it out of the ballpark (artistically, and hopefully commercially) and re-establishes Stevie as an artist that still has something new and viable to offer.

I was mainly referring to Mick because I hadn't heard he was involved :D. But I'm actually very glad Mike is a part of the process, too. I really like his decidedly rock influence on Stevie. Especially after hearing that very Adult Contemporary/Middle Of The Road snippet of "Everybody Loves You." (Where's that damned barfing smilie again?!?)

Here's the whole article:
Dave Stewart working on Stevie Nicks album together with Mick Fleetwood
Dave Stewart told ethrill.net today that he is not only working in the studio together with Mike Campbell (Tom Petty’s Heartbreakers) on the next Stevie Nicks album, but also with the help of Mick Fleetwood!
As reported here in the past months Stewart and Nicks have written and recorded numerous songs together already including at least one duet (see previous news posts about the collaboration and listen to a first snippet here).
Stevie Nicks and Mick Fleetwood are musical partners in “Fleetwood Mac” (“Rumours”, “Tusk”) since 1974 when Nicks joined the legendary band. Although she had as successful solo career as well, they re-joined over the past decades again and again.
The writing and recording sessions for Dave Stewart’s upcoming solo album are going to start soon in Nashville but at the moment he is still in the studio with Stevie, Mike and Mick.

Of course, you have the right to your opinion, and could be right, but I disagree. The 'right' songs have seen Springsteen get airplay, and I heard one or 2 of the Stones songs from their last cd, granted they weren't hits. But I think radio will want to welcome Stevie back if the material is great. I mean if Stevie Nicks comes up with 2 or 3 songs that are really loved by both the public and by radio, she has every chance of the biggest cd she's had since maybe 1989. I do think miracles happen, and every now and then, Stevie has come up with a miraculous song, and if she does it on the new cd, I think she'll get way more than a cursory mention or half-baked welcome back, I think she could totally have it go over. I think she has been missed, and would be welcomed back at radio, there hasn't been a major 'comeback' in a long time, and I think Stevie could be the one. In past albums, she hasn't had the right song to bring her back. 'Planets' was close on TISL, but didn't do it.
Bonnie Raitt did it with 2 or 3 albums in her mid 40s, which at the time, was very unusual. "I Can't Make You Love Me" was a career song, and it didn't matter that she wasn't 'a babe' or not 25, she was getting airplay and selling well because the song was just a perfectly captured performance of the right song, at that time. A great song still can find it's way to success, yes, even by Stevie Nicks in her 60s, it could happen.
Look at Dylan's 'Time Out of Mind'- there are people older than Nicks who manage to have some big albums when the songs and timing is right, and I just have a good feeling about it.
As for 'going down on every radio exec'-- I think that sort of thinking went out a way, way, long time ago, it's silly, maybe you meant it that way. We're not still hearing George Michael or Ricky Martin or- I dunno- Belinda Carlisle, on the radio because of superior oral sex skills! Plus, radio is far from the boys club that it once was, no-one too smart will risk millions of dollars in damages awarded because they go around expecting blow jobs to play songs. It isn't the same business as in the 60s and 70s or perhaps even the 80s, and by then, radio was being very closely watched for illicit payoffs of that and other kinds! Come on :)
Though, if the material doesn't stand out in a major way, I do agree it could just be exactly as your scenario, minus the factor of oral sex having anything to do with it at all! I love that Mick Fleetwood is now involved, too.

This is fantastic news regarding Mick playing on Stevie's new cd!! Hopefully he will appear on more than one song, because it has been over 27 yrs. since he last guested on a Stevie Nicks solo cd with "Sable On Blonde", which brought that hauntingly familiar FM rhythm to the song reminiscent of "Dreams" of course. It would be an interesting twist if he ended up playing on the whole CD in regards to the Fleetwood Mac CD that never was to be following the "Unleashed Tour". Sounds like Stevie is surrounding herself with musicians she respects and trusts on this new outing (and perhaps Lindsey is no longer in that camp) & I'm becoming more confident that she has intentions of putting forth a career CD.
Here's hoping, as Nikolaj pointed out, that Stevie has a killer song or two up her sleeve to get some positive attention to this project. Because I also feel that as good as TISL was as a whole, it did not have a killer single/song to carry it. "Everyday" was a killer video, but a middle of the road song. They would have probably done Stevie a favor by just releasing POTU as the 1st single & video and not confusing people by releasing 2 singles initially to different radio formats. Even "Sorcerer", "Fall From Grace" or "Love Changes" would have made fantastic 1st singles, but overall even as great as these songs are, none are killer out of the box attention grabbers in the vein of "Stand Back", "SDMHA" or even "Talk To Me". Now if she had decided not to pull her TISL version of "Thrown Down" with guest appearances by Lindsey & Mick off her cd, That version would have been a killer, attention grabbing 1st single!!

This last enthusiastic tweet from Dave has me excited, but also a little bit nervous. Though 7 songs is a huge advancement towards a finished product. Stevie would still have to complete arguably between 3-5 more songs to make it complete (6 if she were to make another 13 song cd). With Dave leaving next week to Nashville along with his newly formed band to begin to work on his solo cd, that leaves Stevie to complete the CD by herself, or Ugh another producer (insert cynicism)! If Stevie's past history with multiple producers becomes another time held tradition of delays and shelved material, then there is justification in having some trepidation.
RAL - delayed over a year while producers came and went, changing direction several times shelving an entire cd worth of material in doing so.
Street Angel - delayed almost a year while Stevie detoxed after which she re-produced along w. Thom Panuzio and changed the song selections for final release.
TISL- delayed over a year while producers came and went, with Stevie changing direction at one point recording with R&B producers Dallas Austin & rumored Rodney Jerkins.

Yeah, that 7 songs business was a little bit of a buzz kill for me. Maybe the 7 songs he's talking about are songs that he and she cowrote and that he produced. Perhaps she will go into the vault of previously written tunes (and we know she's got loads) and pick a few to fill up the rest of the CD or perhaps a few she's recently written by herself. Maybe she's got another producer already lined up or in mind to produce the rest of the songs...OR maybe she'll produce them herself. There are many possibilites here. Just because Dave is exiting the picture doesn't mean this isn't going to happen, although I do worry when Stevie is left to her own devices. She needs adult supervision. I also think that she knows that time is of the essence and perhaps, in her maturity and wisdom, she will be doing things differently this time around. I also keep thinking in the back of my mind that if FM has agreed to do something in the near future, she's on a deadline.

"The new album will be done, you know, it's just a matter of when the time is right and I think everyone understands that in my life you must let Stevie go and do what is right for soul...." ~ Stevie Nicks 1987 regarding the release of "The Other Side Of The Mirror" (which wouldn't come out for another two years!!!)
If they are they recording the album now, the EARLIEST we will see it is Spring of next year. But more likely it will be next summer. It won't be before the spring because Stevie doesn't like traveling in the winter. But if the album follows a normal Stevie path, we won't see the album for another five years.

Despite my cynicism creeping in, I really am trying hard to remain optimistic about this new cd being on schedule by either a fall release date (earliest) or late Spring release (like TISL). And with very enthusiastic tweets by Dave calling the recording "EPIC" and "amazing", It does seem like she/they are on a roll & things are going really well, so that's why I was a bit disconcerted about Dave leaving next week to Nashville to begin his own solo recording while only having 7 songs completed. I was hoping that they would have at least 10 to 12 songs in the can, as he mentioned they were going to try and finish up recording in June. Perhaps, Stevie will use the majority of July to began rehearsals for her upcoming August shows with her band, and after they are completed She and Dave will rejoin in the Studio late Aug/Sept or in the fall to finish up the recordings (fingers crossed).
I would speculate she would have to record around 15 to 16 songs to whittle it down to a solid 12 to 13 song final CD. Thats around the amount Stevie's alway done on every single solo cd, leaving many on the cutting room floor. I am leaning to the fact that so far she has recorded all new material written by herself or co-written with Dave thus far, and that perhaps all she needs to do is flesh it out with some good old demos like some of my faves; "Space Needle" "All The Beautiful Worlds", "She Loves Him Still", "Julia", "The Dealer" (with The Heartbreakers) "Chanel Chanel" & "She Calls Him Missing" to name a few off the top of my head as lead contenders.....
What do you all think????
I wish Stevie would offically mention something soon. The Title of the CD....anything.....maybe she waiting till her concert dates, and will do some local press around the time of the concerts and drop some info then. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

I think you're spot on with most everything you said... she's gotta record about twice as many songs as she currently has before the project can even begin to wrap up. I think it's a GOOD thing she records more than she uses... she can cherry pick the best ones that way .
I've gotta go with skuncles regarding a release date though... absolute earliest is mid next year. That's something I've been saying for about 6 -8 months or more now, and I still stand by it. It wouldn't surprise me if the album (even if it's on track) got pushed back to fall of 2011. If she decides to shake it up and hit the reset button, it could be mid 2012... but I've got a sneaking suspicion the Mac has plans starting in 2012 of some form or another. Italian Summer, I love it. How different. I wonder if it was inspired by that Diane Wiest movie, Tuscany Nights, or something like that. Stevie saw it and made plans to summer there and Diane Lane/Weist had, in 2005.

I actually don't expect Stevie to make an album full of rockers at all these days. So I'll happily settle on Other Side Of The Mirror pt 2 so long as it carries over that album's heaping helping of mysticism. I'm semi-ok with Adult Contemporary Stevie as long as she stays far away from garbage like "Maybe Love Will Change Your Mind," "Everyday," stuff of that ilk. That was the redeeming aspect of Stevie going so Adult Contemporary (committing the cardinal sin of Kenny G) on Other Side Of The Mirror: the whole album was a giant fairy tale in the most overwrought Nicksian style . I do think with Campbell helping Stevie out, we'll have at least ONE upbeat rocking song. I hope...

timelessbarbara - Stevie Nicks Working On New CD
By timelessbarbara
As most of Stevie Nicks' fans know, she is working on a new album, with help from Mick (Fleetwood), Dave Stewart (Eurythmics) + some others. I hope these will be all new songs, and not remakes or updated versions of previous releases. ...

in studio right now with Stevie Nicks, Waddy Wachtel, Mike Rowe, Mike Bradford Steve Ferrone creating MAJIK !!!! last day in this studio
I had to google Mike Rowe and Mike Bradford - Mike Rowe is the host of Dirty Jobs and narrates a lot of stuff. Whaa? So then I googled "Mike Rowe Dave Stewart" and found a different guy who has worked with Dave and Sheryl Crow, playing keyboards.
Here's what Wikipedia has on Mike Bradford:
Michael Bradford (born 1961) is a musician and producer. He was born in Detroit, Michigan. While known as a virtuoso bass player,[1] he also plays guitar, having once filled in for Steve Morse when he was unavailable for some Deep Purple appearances.[2] As a producer and engineer Bradford has worked with Kid Rock, Uncle Kracker, Anita Baker, Deep Purple, Earl Klugh and others.[3]
Michael Bradford has also worked on motion picture soundtracks such as Disney's Cinderella II: Dreams Come True.[4]
Obviously, Waddy's on guitar, Steve Ferrone's on drums. I think I finally got excited about this whole project...

Holy smokes! She looks HOT!!!
I'm wondering if the writing and recording sessions back in February, March and April did result in actual recordings? When you consider that they did convene in Dave's and Glen Ballard's studio at the time, with Mike Campbell present, it's likely that those half dozen or so songs that had recently been written were actually recorded (obviously with some post-production required at some stage).
Then when recording sessions resumed in June, it's possible the 7 songs that have just been recorded were in addition to the previous 6 from earlier this year? That would mean they have 13 songs recorded and possibly finished.
Dave is adamant that he is the producer of this album so if he is leaving next week to record his own album in Nashville, it's possible Stevie's album is close to completion. I imagine that if more work is required, sessions will resume once Dave has completed his project. That would give Stevie more time to write or refine additional songs if required. Whatever may be the case, it's now at an extremely exciting stage. Who knows, she (or Dave) may actually issue something before the year is out, officially or otherwise...

Steve Ferrone is the guy who worked with Christine, right? I remember hearing his name as the drummer for her back on her solo tour!
Steve Ferrone is the premiere session drummer, probably up there only with the likes of Kenny Aronoff and Russ Kunkel. If nothing else, I think we can all breathe a sigh of relief that this is not some cheap and quick recording session using Pro-tools and a Mac Airbook. She's spending real money in a real studio with real musicians. And with Mick Fleetwood in the mix somewhere, you know it's going to be back to basics, e.g., Wild Heart-era. And if Mike Campbell and Steve Ferrone are involved, perhaps it's not too far of a leap to assume that Benmont Tench got sucked into the project too, which would also seem to suggest a sound in the direction of BD and WH. Wow. :blob1: I can see why Dave Stewart describes this recording as "epic;" one does not just work with so many legendary musicians, Miss Nicks notwithstanding, on a daily basis. I guess we will all wait to see what Dave's influence will be. I suspect that he gets her, which is the most important thing a producer can do. Otherwise, you end up with a crap album; Glyn Johns, anyone?
I can't help but wonder whether Stevie has a new muse or some kind of new-found urgency to work. It seems that she accomplished more in the first six months of 2010 than she has in the past six years put together. Between the Buddy Holly song(s), the Rumours tribute and her own album, she has been working feverishly, and just for shizz and giggles she's also going to do some live dates to boot. I wonder if she had some kind of epiphany or life-changing moment?

I bet this isn't an amateur photo by Dave. I'd have to do some digging through multiple threads, but sometime in the past couple of months, a professional photog tweeted about going to shoot Stevie in the studio. I bet that's where this came from :).
I reckon you're right Louie but remember, Dave is a professional photographer himself these days so he may have actually captured a few images during the recording process, particularly on the final evening. I do remember though there was a female photographer present during the sessions at Dave's and Glen Ballard's studio back in Feb/March so I'm sure that some of the images that make it to the album sleeve/booklet will be from that time.

This is what I have suspected all along. Dave just sounded so overly positive in his tweets back in Feb & March that made me believe they completely hit it off personally and professionally and were on a roll towards something worthwhile. The only comment he made that left us all scratching our heads was "yeah we are making "album" in a very new way", which led some to think that Stevie was possibly recording using new & fast cheaper technology to offset expenses and possibly release an internet or EP album quickly.
But now, that all seems unlikely, and rightly so, cause when has Stevie ever done anything half-baked, even when the outcome is sometimes lacking that special Stevie majick, as I feel was the case with "Street Angel". Stevie's intentions are always that this may be the very last album I ever do, so it's going to be grand and that usually means $$$.
All of her solo recording have never been cheap fare. RAL at the time was one of the most expensive albums made when it was released in the mid 80's. She spent a ton on OSOTM, renting the fabulous dutch mansion, recording in London and L.A. She even mentioned in a Jim Ladd interview after "Street Angel" was released, expressing her frustration that even while she knew it wasn't right, She had already spent a ton of money on it and just had to let it go. And every single solo record is littered with the some of the most talented and expensive in demand studio musicians.
So I think Stevie's epiphany is no longer waiting for the recording industry to change (cause it's not) and knowing that now is the time to record something that she really enjoys and surround herself with people that admire and respect Stevie's special talent. She knew deep down, after the Unleashed tour, she did not want to go back into the studio with Lindsey, she was always the hold out, while Mick and Lindsey remained optimistic it could happen. They all went into SYW with the best of intentions of recording another fabulous Fleetwood Mac record, but Stevie was unhappy with the power struggles with Lindsey & the overall final outcome, and I don't blame her. When SYW was released I was gaga about the abundance of material we the fans received and excited to have some old demo's come to life, but stepping back from it 7 yrs. later, I definitely see it's faults & shortcomings as well as Lindsey's producing limitations. It would have probably been wise to have brought in another producer alongside that they trusted like Ken Caillat or someone else to balance things out. I feel TISL holds up as a more cohesive recording than SYW, and I for one have been thrilled Stevie decided it was time for another solo outing, and put FM on the backburner for now. I probably would feel differently if SYW were a masterpiece.

I couldn't agree with you any more, especially that last paragraph. I'm really hoping Stevie's displeasure with Say You Will means she'll create an album that's that much stronger because of it. I'd say it's safe to say due to her quick turnaround from the Unleashed tour to recording for this new project, Ms Nicks has something to say. It's such a relief she's FINALLY found her muse again.

Hell ya! David Wilde practically inferred this on his recent tweet "The result so far is powerful & deeply personal. There's blood on these tracks. Stevie definitely has something to say in a BIG WAY, and she has been holding it in since SYW came out and everything in between, with the lone exception of the now infamous interview last year where she didn't hold back and officially came out exclaiming she was less than happy with they way that record ended up.
I expect that Stevie will have some of her most pointed and unveiled lyrics of any record since the "fairytale castle wall's crashing down around her" tone of OSOTM, which in my opinion contains some of her best & most consistent lyrics in one record.

David Wild's tweet "There's blood on these tracks" got me more excited than anything else we've heard!!! STEVIE GIVE US BLOOD.
Wild also tweeted something along the lines how there is a lot of "ghosts and vampires on the album" (paraphrasing but I know he said ghosts and vampires) The vampire bit made me think of the New Orleans song that she sang on the Unleashed tour.

It is exciting, because the description sort of alleviates the Adult Contemporary fear that some had expressed.

Exactly!!!! I don't want to get my hopes up too far, but I'm so excited :o
Can't say a small part of me isn't hoping that the vampire song is an elaborate retelling of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse from the lens of Stevie/Mick/Lindsey instead of the New Orleans song, though

Ok guys so I haven't said a lot in regards to this new project which I know is rare for me but I finally just figured out why - I'm scared ****less! I know this sounds a little weird and I know I'm on the other side of the mirror (thanks Louie) but you see this is the first time since I became a Chiffonhead (2002) that Stevie has put out a solo album. Now I know she had new material on SYW but a)it was an FM album and b)I had only been hardcore for a year at that point. So much has changed since then - the tours, the Ledge, the Stevie friends, the music, Stevie Nicks 101 classes over and over. You get my point. So here are my fears: What if I don't connect with any of the new material? I know everything she's put out so well by now and have a relationship with those songs but what if I'm just not feeling it? Next, what if by some chance she does have a huge hit and goes mainstream again and we lose the Stevie we have now? What if she releases a demo I love and I hate what she's done to it? What if this is her "farewelll" solo album and she's retiring after this? Ok so I'm full of what if's and could go on and on and I know none of these things are likely to happen but my conclusion - as much as I can't wait for this album I hate change!

You just took the words out of my mouth! I became a fan circa 02, and was super excited for Say You Will. But like you said, that wasn't new solo Stevie. I am soooo scared for her to become mainstream, and I'm not sure why. Probably because all these people will be running around saying "omg I love Stevie! Her song Magic Man is like my favorite ever!" and I will facepalm. This is why I have expressed so much concern over adult contemporary crap, I'm just so scared about this new album, but still very excited. I still haven't even seen her or Fleetwood Mac live, I can't handle a farewell tour or album!

I've been a fan for 17 years. Let me describe to you the phases of getting new Stevie material:
1) You think it's the best material in the history of the world and universe
2) You start to see a few songs you don't like as much as the others
3) You get so burned out on listening to the music 3,652 times a day that you shelve the album for a while
4) You listen to the album some time later, and can FINALLY look at it a bit more objectively and assess it's strengths and weaknesses
This whole process takes a couple of years, by the way. To address your main worry: you'll love what you hear... at first. :)

There is absolutely no way that Stevie will become "mainstream" again. She could have just recorded Thriller with Dave Stewart, and she still would be regarded as a "legacy artist." It's the age. There is simply no way of getting around the fact that she is almost old enough to receive Social Security checks. I predict the arc of her new album will pretty much follow the arcs of the recent albums from her peers- Bob Dylan, James Taylor, Neil Diamond, Tom Petty, etc.: Top 20 (or even Top 10) placing the first couple of weeks (as pre-orders get shipped out from Amazon and Wal Mart shoppers catch on), followed by a precipitous decline after about 4 weeks. The album will be off the charts within 8 weeks. She is not going to get mainstream radio airplay, and the AAA radio format has a very limited following. The other thing to consider is that Stevie has done a **** job of curating a younger fanbase over the past 10 years or so. Rather than trying to stay current/relevant via regular media exposure, music videos and new albums (e.g., Aerosmith), she has been largely reclusive and unwilling to release new material. Yes, the world obviously wants a new Stevie album, but most people under the age of 30 have simply never heard of her.

Even 40 year old artists can't go mainstream, so there's no fear on Stevie's account. But if she did that would just give her focused fans a lot more stuff to collect. We'd have loads of new pictures, music (official and unofficial), interviews and memorabilia.
Then, after a year or two passed and she was no longer hot, her fanatics would still be rejoicing in these items while the rest of the world has moved on.
So, the masses are not going to take her from her fans, even if -- by some miracle --they borrow her for a little while.

I wouldn't say even 40 year old artists can't go mainstream, it is just that they usually don't. But sometimes there are those flukes, such as Cher, Madonna, and Susan Boyle (Yes, she was a new artist and shocked the world on TV, but 3.1 million in 2009, making it the number 2 album for the year is a lot for some random 49 year old woman from Scotland.)
I doubt Stevie is going to blow up the charts and have the top selling album of the year, but I do believe she could kick some ass and get some recognition by a lot of people. And if she is lucky, one of her singles may get a lot of radio play. However, you are exactly right with what you say about the masses not stealing her from us, but just borrowing her for a while.

Ann Marie Calhoun. I think we can also safely assume that Sharon and Lori are on there, but Jana is not.
I'm somewhat bemused by all this talk of Stevie "going mainstream" for this album due to the fact that she and Fleetwood Mac have basically always been a commerical force within the music industry (ie mainstream). That said, Stevie has nearly always retained her eccentricity and uniqueness as a songwriter and vocalist (it did seem to go walkabout for "Street Angel").
I'm also surprised that there is an assumption that having Dave Stewart at the helm of proceedings will automatically result in an adult contemporary, mainstream record when in fact he is an extremely inventive, creative artist. Have you guys actually listened to the first few Eurythmics albums? Dave is obviously capable of masterminding "hits" - he has done this for an array of artists, some desperately lacking in talent - but he is also an accomplished and innovative musician who always works outside of the box. I have absolutely no doubt he will nurture and exploit every one of Stevie's eccentricities for this record. He's already on record as saying he is impressed by her lyrics which he describes as "poetry" so I am certain he will tease out every ounce of "Stevieness" possible and then some. He obviously adores her and as another poster has stated, "he gets her". This is crucial to Stevie when making an album - if the producer doesn't understand and support her vision, then all bets are off.
Additionally, he more than knows how to "rock a little" - he's not just some weird, nutty synth-professor standing in the shadows of Annie Lennox. I can guarantee there will be a few uptempo numbers to have the likes of "Fall From Grace" quaking in it's boots. Wait and see.
PS Dave and Annie were responsible for most of Eurythmics videos throughout their career from their inception to the direction and to this day, Dave retains an interest in the video medium. I have no doubt he will encourage Stevie to make at least a couple of film-clips for this album, most likely with him story-boarding and directing them. If this comes to fruition, I can promise they will be anything but "mainstream"!

...but isn't "introspection" kind of her blindspot? Introspection seems to imply some degree of self-awareness, which is what makes Stevie alluring and annoying at the same time- she has no self-awareness. I have loved the fact that Stevie has always hovered above the clouds somewhere while she narrates the travails of these characters who symbolize things going on in her real life. She's not an "I" or "me" person. She doesn't look at herself in the mirror to look for flaws. Rather, she turns the mirror on others and only occasionally peeks in it just to see whether her lipstick needs to be retouched.

To be honest, I have never been particularly impressed with Dave Stewart as an instrumentalist. Yes, he can certainly play guitar... but it has never seemed to be particularly distinctive or otherwise memorable. As a producer he's also kind of hard to pin down since he has swung from one extreme to another. But if I had to give one defining Dave Stewart characteristic, it would have to be strings. Whether real or synthesized, he loves to use strings at every possible opportunity. I fully expect to hear lots of strings and big sounding keyboard parts on Stevie's album, which would be kind of neat!

It's been a long time since Cher's Believe. I don't think she and Tina Turner could enjoy the revial today that they did then.
Of course, you do always hope for a Carlos Santana long shot. I was reading an interview with Macy Gray and she was saying that she couldn't get the popular producers today to return her calls. She said she doesn't know why the record companies think only young people buy records. She also pointed to Susan Boyle and said that proves that there's a need out there that needs to be filled.
Certainly, if Stevie made a memorable appearance on a popular tv show, she could have a fluke hit.

My only prob with Stevie's style of introspection is when it get way too literal.
"Well I talked to my famous friend last night
My third day up...well, his second nighter"
.....Cause heck, who the hell can't relate to that. ;)
Also "Bella Donna" ," "HAEWAFY", "Ghosts", & "I Miss You" are introspective in a self absorbed kind of way.
"Landslide" is unique because 1. it was written by Stevie pre-stardom, 2. it touches upon universal themes 3. was written beautifully in a simple yet non trite fashion which makes it accessible to everyone. It's funny how an unassuming song, buried on FM self-titled album that was never a single, till it was released 22 or so years later in 97' , while even then it did not make it to the Top 40 pop singles chart, will become (I believe) the most beloved song that Stevie Nicks is famous for overall.

Cher basically put lightning in a bottle with Believe. The style, the look, the songs, and most importantly, the over-the-top TV AMA appearance which was not unlike Michael Jackson at the Apollo (in terms of exposure, that is). And Tina Turner, who was also considered back in the day to be "ancient" (at the ripe old age of 45!) also had one of those defining TV moments (which I now forget...). So what did Cher, Michael and Tina have in common? They could dance (or in Cher's case, get lifted around a lot). Stevie is not a dancer. She doesn't wear outrageously sexy costumes or sparkly wigs. And she doesn't even really work an audience in an overt manner. She's actually a bit aloof and quietly dramatic; she doesn't even make eye contact most of the time. Clean and sober, she is no longer giving heel-splittingly intense performances. At the end of the day, she's a legendary, well-respected older singer-songwriter with a unique, idiosyncratic voice with technical limitations. Either you get her or you don't. I don't think she is going to start wearing gauzy shawls and feathers in her hair again anytime soon in an effort to tart up her image for a mainstream audience.
michelej1, I concur with the points you make. Today's market is most definitely youth-oriented and the likes of Tina and Cher would really battle to make an impression on the charts in the current musical environment.
Have you heard the latest Macy Gray album "The Sellout"? It's fantastic - best thing she's done hands down. Absolutely no filler whatsoever - brilliant. I heard her interviewed recently as well and she reiterated what you mention about her being persona non grata in the music industry. I'm sure that will all turn around now that she 's being critiqued well for the album and it seems poised to shift more than a few units.
Speaking of Macy, I'm still pissed off with Stevie for not recording the song she wrote for her - "Smitten" - in 1999. Macy spoke of it in Rolling Stone magazine at the time and was all set to go into the studio with Stevie to record it. Stevie passed on it and Macy ended up doing backing vocals on "Bombay Sapphires" as we all know (not that you can actually hear her!). "Smitten" was eventually recorded by Rod Stewart, albeit with a lacklustre arrangement - certainly not what Macy had envisaged for Stevie, having spoken of an extravagant, over-the-top Queen like production. Despite this, it's still a great little song and contains the cute lyric "allow me to introduce myself, I am smitten". Sweet Macy.

I don't quite agree with some of those songs as being "introspective." To me, "introspective" means that the songwriter is sharing with the audience some kind of truth that haunts him/her to the core. "Landslide" is Stevie's version of Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now"- these precocious world-weary pearls of aged wisdom written by 20-something ingenues. In it, Stevie muses on her fear of getting older and her fear of failure. In "Doing the Best I Can," she reveals the most chilling lyric ever written about herself: "In my way, disaster was the only thing that I could depend on..." In "Storms" she admits again her self-destructive/dysfunctional tendencies when it comes to romantic relationships. She is quite the enigma otherwise. As she likes to call it, she writes in "code" most of the time.

I was wondering about this as well. I assumed it was meant to be a joke but Jesus, I would just about pass out if she has recorded it. I adored the demo and always thought it would have made a great Mac song and frankly, was surprised it didn't make it onto the "Say You Will" album. I think Dave would get off on the lyrics too, despite Stevie not having written them.

So beautifully written HejiraNYC - you possess an exquisite turn of phrase my friend!

I kinda dug it too. It needs tweaking, but it could be cool.
I seem to recall that she is the one playing the violin parts in the "Everybody Loves You" demo.
Ok, gotcha. Thanks! :wavey:

If Annabel Lee merits inclusion in this upcoming collection, I think we should all fear the worst. That was not a good song by any measure.
BITE YOUR TONGUE!
that was one of her BEST TISL-era songs .... not this Too Far From Texas ****

Haha, we don't seem to agree on much, but I respect your opinions.
I do think "Annabel Lee" needs some polishing (the demo arrangement is dull) but the lyrics are brilliant and clearly Stevie identifies closely with them. I also love that she doesn't alter the gender when she speaks of lying down with her bride. If properly arranged and produced, this could become a masterpiece in my humble opinion - I obviously dream on a large scale!

Steve Ferrone is the premiere session drummer, probably up there only with the likes of Kenny Aronoff and Russ Kunkel. ...
I think Mike Rowe is on keys.

Rickey Peterson is also a keyboardist. From facebook:
Finished in LA with Stevie! Her songs are really good and the band kicked arse!!! Good to be home and ready for what the summer brings!
I like that first word...finished! Peterson was on the Crystal Visions tour. Stevie said he "brings back the sound of Bella Donna." And I'm pretty sure he was also the guy who she said reminded her of Christine.

So, he was in the studio or he was rehearsing for the live shows?

Oh, good question. I didn't even think of that. I'm guessing since he commented on the band that they could be rehearsing? I wonder if they are rehearsing new stuff, since they are or were recording very recently as well.

That's a good question. I think he's referring to the studio, because if Stevie and Dave just wrapped a session last night, and he posted this on his Facebook today, there would be no way that Stevie would have already moved on to rehearsing for the live shows yet.

He is most definitely referring to the recording sessions. Take a look at this! And as I suspected, she IS also working with Glen Ballard!!

LOVE me some Annabel Lee. If you can look beyond the simplistic guitar/bass & drum-machine demo arrangement, Stevie actually pulls off arranging this classic Poe poem stanza's to a pleasing sing along melody. With the right producer & vocal performance I envision this could be a nifty song to add to her repertoire. Stevie probably didn't want to jump through the hoops and pay the copyright fee's if approved, otherwise I think she would definitely have recorded this great little ditty. Who better than Stevie could convey the mournful yearning of the beloved Annabel Lee in her kingdom by the sea?

Hey, thanks for digging those up! Very cool.
Dave and Glen are co owners of the studio, so that's not surprising he's involved too.
For those interested, here's an update on the details so far:
So, we have these players:
Dave Stewart - guitar
Mike Campbell - guitar
Steve Ferrone - drums
Mike Rowe - keyboard
Mike Bradford - bass
Waddy Wachtel - guitar
Mick Fleetwood - drums
Rickey Peterson - keyboard
Also: Ann Marie Calhoun - violin
These songs/titles:
Everybody Loves You
Italian Summer
New Orleans song / Vampire song (alleged but based on David Wild's visit to the studio)
Annabel Lee (alleged)
Producers: Dave Stewart, Glen Ballard
Yes but is there any official comment/tweet from anyone involved regarding "Annabel Lee"? I'm not sure this information is at all based on fact, but rather wishful thinking.

Gotta love Dave & others, but esp. Dave for keeping us in the loop with his tweets & pix in real time, This is a 1st for a Stevie Nicks project! Who needs official press statements when we are getting taunted & teased with tweets from those on the inside. So this got me to wondering, Thus far the sessions on Stevie's new material have been described as:
"sounding EPIC" D.S.
"sounding AMAZING" D.S.
" you won't be disappointed :)" D.S
"there are lots of ghosts, vampires on Stevie Nicks' upcoming album, but mostly stunning songs." D.W.
"powerful & deeply personal. There's blood on these tracks." D.W
"rocks, on a number of levels." D.W.
"WOW. And a good wow too." D.W.
"KILLIN!" R.P
"Grooving and it sounds really good! " R.P
So can this project possibly stand up to this hype? Are we going to have such high expectations that we are sure to be disappointed?? Don't get me wrong I think Stevie has it in her & has yet to make her all time great solo recording. And I am sure I will love what is released no matter what. But it does raise the bar a bit to read these soundbites out of any real context other than exciting adjectives that reverberate in our deaf ears.

When it rains...IT POURS!!
This all sounds too good to be true.... my head is spinning..... this is very exciting!!
Today's music industry is all about artist's having to multi-market on many different mediums, so perhaps this is Dave & Stevie's idea to get more exposure to this project, which could resurrect both of their careers on so many levels. Also because Dave is a movie and video nut, here's hoping he also influences Stevie to film some great video clips to promote her new songs on the web. One of the many grave errors in marketing the SYW record.

if I recall SYW had some AOL sessions videos of Say You Will and Peacekeeper. I think both were released as live versions on the expanded special ultimate super-dooper edition of SYW.
Also the internet was pretty much in its multimedia "infancy" back in 2003. Streaming video and audio was pretty craptastic and broadband was not common in the average household yet. Just about the ONLY thing done to promote TISL was it was avialable for streaming from VH1 if you preordered it.

While, as a fan, I would have loved to see a concept video for, say, "Thrown Down", it would have been half a mil down the drain.
