What an adorable picture! That puppy is so cute!

I presume it's a Lhasa Apso puppy?

Gail

Yes it is. She's always liked this breed.

Here's the Dennis Wilson Melody Maker article. After reading this, you can certainly understand why Chris has called her years with Dennis the most bizzare years of her life.

The Beach Boys Love Good Karma

And Dennis Wilson loves Christine McVie A-OK. Richard Williams picks up the nice vibrations.

Hold page nine! Rock ‘n’ roll’s newest woosome twosome is-and you’re not gonna guess it!-DENNIS WILSON AND CHRISTINE MCVIE!

Yes, indeed, the Beach Boys’ all-American surfin’, draggin’, bikin’ drummer is more than “just good friends” with the English blues thrush who went to California and found a crock of platinum at the end of the rainbow!

Nevertheless, the man from the Daily Mail is not impressed.

“They didn’t have much to say,” he confides, in the hotel bar. “The pix won’t be much good, either. She grabbed his b**** once, but the photographer wasn’t ready.”

Grabbed his b****?

The Beach Boys image as goody-goodies, which persisted (to their detriment) through the era of drugs and filth, was destroyed , in the music industry, by a tale which went around a few years ago.

While in London, the story goes, one member of the group (not Dennis, as it happens) was found in bed by an executive of their record company. With the executive’s wife. (Industry buffs go on to relate that the executive was ordered to forget the incident, so as not to upset the company’s relationship with the group: the tale is used as a kind of music parable.)

Dennis, of course has never been a goody-goody. Why, back in 1965, on the sleeve of “Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!!),” he wrote: “I love summertime most because we can get around to all the towns and I can meet all the girls.”

Apparently he’s requested my presence in order to tell me that, for Christine and himself, this is The Real Thing.

I am more interested in talking about disco records. About, in fact, the Beach Boys’ new single, which is a full-blown disco version of their old album track, “Here Comes The Night.”

Dennis, who has a disconcertingly oblique way of reaching the point, responds thus: “You really want to know about the disco community? Well, the gay community has made a tremendous mistake. Just like Hitler used Wagner, it’s unfair to take an art-form and use it…what do you think?”

I fumble for a cigarette and mutter that a disenfranchised minority surely has a right to raise a flag for itself through the appropriation of …

“But some of your best friends are gay,” says Christine to Dennis. From the look on his face, it seems unlikely.

His further responses to questioning along this line are somewhat confused.

“I’m honored to perform disco,” he says, “On Stage I translate the percussion into a Puerto Rican or Latin flavour…but I can’t stand regimentation or formula or planned obsolescence. I’m not into disco.”

Then: “I’m not on the disco record, I don’t perform on it. I’m honored that it’s part of…it’s nice to hear it. But you’re talking about one of the finest groups in the world. ’Good Vibrations’…’God Only Knows’…Brian Wilson…it reminds me of the ’busy’ signal on the telephone line.”

Whatever Dennis Wilson is doing in London, he will not be promoting “Here Comes The Night.”

He plays me a cassette of the new album, fiddling with the fast-forward and rewind switches, looking for a particular track. He can’t find it.

“C*********!” he shouts, apparently to the machine. Then: “Don’t write that down!”

Christine giggles. “You get used to it,” she says. “He said it in front of my father the other day!”

Dennis finds the track, “Going South.” His brother Brian’s voice comes in, above a whisper of harmonies.

Dennis bursts into tears.

He goes to the bathroom to clear his head, and returns after a couple of minutes with watery eyes and a red nose.

He tells me that he plans to put together all the film he has made of the group since 1964: “Every live performance we’ve ever done. I filmed it all. It could be a TV series-I might give it to CBS.”

CBS, as well as being one of the three major American TV networks, is also the group’s new record company, and Dennis launches into an unsolicited testimonial.

“I want to support that company. They’re the hippest f***ing corporation on the planet. The chemistry is alive again between CBS and the Beach Boys. It’s the same chemistry that Christine has with Warner Brothers. You’re looking at history there”-he indicates Ms. McVie-”to move that number of records without a movie, without a John Travolta. It’s as historical as…as…as Admiral Lemnitz!”

Yeah! Right!

Sorry, what was that again?

I ask him to tell me about his solo album, the thoroughly outstanding “Pacific Ocean Blues,” which appeared a couple of years ago to an unjustifiably cool response.

“It was a self-indulgent one-man band thing, and I had fun doing it,” he replies. “I was waiting for the Beach Boys to come down to Brother Studio and make an album. I’m there in this beautiful studio which Al and Mike and Brian tell me is losing money…so I used it. I kept it alive.”

He tells me that the studio has been sold, it’s equipment-which was originally transported across the Atlantic to make the “Holland” album, before being shipped back to Brother Studio-now in the possession of saxophonist Tom Scott.

I asked him about their final release on Warner Brothers, “The MIU Album,” named for the Maharishi Institute University.

“They told me they were going to build a studio there, so I quit the group. I don’t believe in that album.

“I sang a song on it, which my dear brother Brian wrote about Diane Rovelle”-Brian’s sister-in-law, in case you wondered-”But I feel that the album…well, I hope that the karma will f*** up Mike Love’s meditation for ever. That album is an embarrassment to my life. It should self-destruct.”

Whew! Thank goodness I gave it a bad review!

So why did he return to the fold for the latest piece of product, which is rather tweely titled “The Beach Boys’ L.A. (Light Album)”?

“Because I stood in a room with my family, around the piano, and we shared something together. That brotherhood is so loving and important that I’ll stand behind this album with my absolute being,. And God bless the Beach Boys. And I’ve done talking.”

Well, not quite. He tells me that the group runs democratically, which means that all five members have a vote, and that Brian’s vote had been given to his wife, Marilyn when she took over his power of attorney a year or so back. She had, apparently voted with Love and Al Jardine against Carl and Dennis on a couple of crucial occasions.

Bu then Dennis says, “Look out for Brian Wilson!” He seems to be on the brink of selling me the standard Brian’s-on-the-mend line when the telephone rings.

It’s Brian, calling from Hollywood.

The karma, folks!

Dennis goes to the phone.

“Brian! I just want to tell you that I love you and I miss you. Brian…and tell Carl he’s a f*******!”…and tell the rest of the guys to start supporting each other!”

He bursts into tears again.

“Why don’t you come over to England, Brian?” he enquires through the sniffles. “I’ll send you a ticket! Hey Christine. Brian wants to talk to you!”

Christine takes the receiver, while Dennis returns to his chair and tells me that Brian just loves Christine. He never liked Karen, Dennis’s last wife…wouldn’t talk to her. Dennis seems to think that this is significant.

And then, quite suddenly, he declares that the interview is over.

We all get up to leave, Dennis and Christine taking an elevator to their room, me taking another one to the ground floor.

The last thing I hear, as the elevator doors close, is Dennis’s voice: “Hey, baby, those jeans make your butt look flat!”

I could tell that they’re as close as this, but I didn’t have the courage to ask if they in in infanticipating.

That's great about your puppy! I forget. Are you getting a male or female? And, I assume you won't be bringing it home until June?

We're getting a female-- the litter only consists of 2 girls and 1 boy, so i don't have much choice, it's either one or the other LOL. but i'm sure she'll be adorable.

Thanks for the chris/dennis article! yeesh just reading that exhausted me. imagine trying to keep up w/ a man like that?!

it's kind of funny to picture dennis saying c***sucker in front of cyril perfect LOL.

Wow, that was a great article - thank you for posting!
I have to admit, although Dennis Wilson was fairly attractive and obviously talented, I don't know what she saw in him or how she put up with him.
Nice to know Brian thought highly of her though!

I don't really know how she put up w/ him either. My guess is maybe she liked the fact that she had to 'look after him' , and mother him a little. he must have been so dramatic and draining.

It must have been neat to know that brian wilson likes you LOL. I'd imagine maybe Chris had a very calming effect on him, w/ her voice and her whole demeanor.... maybe brian found her 'soothing' at that nutty stage of his life.

all just my speculation. :)

I think Dennis Wilson was very attractive, so I can see what she saw in him in that regard. But I have no idea how she put up with him. He seemed almost manic, probably due to all the drugs & alcohol he was ingesting at that time. She must have been exhausted after awhile. It probably took her a few years just to decompress after the affair was over.

By the way, I think she & Brian are still friends. She went to one of his shows that he did in London a few years ago.

Wasn't there a Rolling Stone interview she did when her 1984 solo album came out where she said something like "I tend to go for these half little boy types, when Dennis was like that he was just adorable" I'm at work at the moment but I'll check when I get home - I think I've still got the interview. Or perhaps someone else (Mary Anne) can confirm this?

There must have been something she saw in him although God knows what. What with the drugs and alcohol and I doubt if he was capable of fidelity.

You are right about the Rolling Stone interview. Here's the full quote:

"I tend to go for these half-little-boy characters. When Dennis was like that, he was just adorable. He was really a sensitive, sweet man."

Here's another quote about Dennis from the Return of the Native article in Word Magazine from two years ago:

"Why do people stay with people? ‘Cos they love them, I guess. And I loved him for a while. he was very charismatic, great looking, very charming, very cute -- if you can call a guy with a beard and voice like Satan’cute’. He used to draw people into his life, strangers off planes and off the streets, and they’d become his best friends. I think I mothered him, to be honest. He used to go off and I wouldn’t see him for days, and days, and then he’d come back and I’d mother him and get him all nice and sober and then he’d go off and go crazy again. It’s one of those things. Opposites attract.”

In that same 1984 Rolling Stone magazine, there's an article about the last years of Dennis's life. It's a pretty scary article. Here's a quote from Chris in the article:

"It was probably the experience of a lifetime. Dennis was such a character. Half of him was like a little boy, and the other half was insane. A really split personality."

Here is another quote from a friend, Chris Clark, from the article:

"Whatever he did, he did in excess."

Another quote from his manager:

"Dennis was a sex fiend, plain and simple. The man used to think more with his sex organs than with his brain."

He seems to have been am emotional trainwreck, but maybe he had amazing charisma. Or maybe they just liked each other when they were drinking, and then she sobered up a little. I find his reaction to talking about Brian sort of heartbreaking.
I don't know if anyone here has ever seen
"Two Lane Blacktop"? He is really beautiful to look at, IMO, in that movie.
I don't know the chronology, but had Chirs split from Dennis already, when he died?

Love the one of her w/ John, too. His arm looks so naked without the penguin tattoo. :D Plus he had that pale English skin in those days, whereas years later he became eternally tan. :p LOVE the tan skin next to white clothing, like in the Tango concert video. Hotness.

At the moment in the south of England we've had so little rain that some of the water companies have imposed hosepipe bans and may have to impose drought orders! Kent is one of the areas affected so Christine will have to water her garden with a watering can (or perhaps she has someone to do that for her)

I used to live in the north west of England where it really does rain all the time! We used to say that if you can see the hills it's going to rain, if you can't see the hills it is raining!

Now I'm a soft southerner and here in Southampton we've had a lot of rain over the last week or so but normally it's pretty dry.

Somehow I have a hard time picturing her watering her garden by hand herself. Just looking at that DVD I just got, her gardens look huge.

Wimbledon is in south west London - you may have heard people refer to it as SW19 (that's its post code)

I imagine it would be more than an hour's drive from her home in Kent. But from her London flat not moe than a few miles

Hotter than his short shorts! While in Texas and watching Destiny Rules, I tried to point out how John becomes when he talks about Christine. His demeanor completely does a 360 as you know. I don't think it sunk in, but I was communicating with a SnL shipper.

Here´s a pic from the Destiny Rules dvd. This is when he´s talking about Chris not being there, and just look at his face! It really says it all.

No you´re not. I thought exactly the same!!

Here are a few more from my collection. You guys need to identify these photos. It's nice to post them, but it's also extremely important that you identify them. When were they taken? What was the event? This is extremely important to archival-minded fans.

Those shots of all five look like the Don Kirshner Rock Awards in 1976. Is this the case?

I know exactly what you mean about wanting to know the event and dates (I´m pretty archival-minded myself and it´s frustrating not to know!) but in this case I have to admit that I simply don´t know anything about the dates or what the event was. It´s just pictures I´ve found on the internet with no dates, and I think I was kind of hoping that someone on here would be able to identify them. I´m :sorry: I couldn´t be of more help, I will try to do better next time!

The first picture is a left over shot from the 1984 solo tour. I'm not exactly sure where the second picture is from. I think it's from around 1986. I have another picture of Chris that was taken in 1986 & she's wearing the exact same ring in this picture. The 3rd & 4th pictures are from LAX. I had one LAX photo before & I always thought it had been from around the Dance era because of her short hair. It turns out she had her hair tied up, so I think this may be from the Time era a few years earlier. There's another LAX shot on my site, by the way. The last picture is from the Dance tour; I don't know which show. Notice that she's wearing gloves with the fingertips cut out.:D

Hello everybody, just back from my little trip to good old England and thought I would post some more Chris pics before I´m off to work. I recently downloaded the "Rumours Behind the scenes dvd Vol 1" and these pics are just screen shots from that dvd. A wonderfully, gloriously p i s s e d Christine talking about her dog, interviewing herself (!) and stuff like that. She´s also talking about Songbird, that it´s a very personal song and that she didn´t want to perform it live at first because she felt embarrassed doing it. Mick, John and Lindsey had to persuade her apparently!:) She didn´t want to say who she wrote it for (well, she said it was about herself and her dog but that was just a joke of course!) and I was just wondering if anyone on here knows ?

Yes, there's a 100 kb limit. I usually shrink the picture if it's over the limit. Do you have any photo editing software installed on your computer? That way I can post it as an attachment.

Actually, in Photobucket - and I just discovered this recently, myself - if you go to "account options" at the very top (near your username, right next to "log out"), you can change the maximum picture size. Under user info, where it says album options, go to max picture size and select 1024kb. That's usually enough to host even HQ images under 1MB.

Sorry to do this in Chris's forum, but I found the article with that same photo by H. W. Worthington III, 1976 -- It's from Rolling Stone, Dec 16-23, 1999 (Special Photo Edition) p. 120.

"This is quite early on, pre-Rumours," says Lindsey Buckingham, "and I think we were right on that cusp where we had had some success and knew something was coming. We weren't sure what it was, but we knew things were going to change. I think you can see, from just the placement of the people in the picture, that Stevie and I were still kinda new kids. We both look pretty contemplative here, like it's in our minds that one of the things that's going to change as this Fleetwood Mac thing evolves is our relationship, and that maybe the signs are already in front of us, the writing is on the wall. In Mick's case, you can see a lot of the focus and the obsession to make this Fleetwood Mac thing fly coming from him -- to his credit. There's a lot of excitement that doesn't show in this photo, but the underlying things are the things we realized we were going to have to give up for that. That's show business -- that's the way it works." H.W. Worthington ended up having a long relationship with Fleetwood Mac, doing three of their album covers and many more for Stevie Nicks' solo career. "They were fabulous subjects," he says. "Look at Rumours. They look like cartoon characters -- every one of them."

  How did you do that?

MY original plan was to learn to paint (overnight), then go round to Christine's house and persuade her to dress up in all that gear. Then I could paint her.

It turned out to be quicker to use Photoshop!

this really is one of the great threads!

Gail

PS You can actually get some quite nice effects using Photoshop to turn photographs into something that looks like a painting. I'm not very skilled at it (yet) and that was one of my earlier attempts.

What version of Photoshop do you have? I love to play around with all the filters. Levels are amazing too.

I should have known you were playing with Photoshop again.;) :D

I don't have Photoshop. I have some software called Photostudio that came with my scanner. I haven't really figured out how to play with some of the stuff yet, just the basics. I've heard that Photoshop is VERY expensive. Is that true?

I have CS2 which I bought after going to an evening class of 10 2 hour lessons.

It does so much - probably more than I actually need but it is good fun and yes the filters and levels can give you some really good effects

Photoshop is very expensive (I paid about £375 which is in excess of $550) but it does a hell of a lot.

Photoshop Elements has quite a few of the functions of Photoshop and is a good alternative and a hell of a lot cheaper - probably $125

It might be cheaper in the US - we seem to pay over the odds for most things here!

You'd have to be really interested in manipulating images to warrant the expense though. But Elements is a very good package

I think CS2 goes for under $600. It's slightly cheaper with an education discount. I'm learning CS & CS2 on an iMac in one of my art classes. It's amazing what it can do.

everyone at my job uses that, and i feel stupid for never getting the hang of it. . .for years i couldn't afford photoshop, so i would download paint shop pro and then fix my computer clock so that i could use it pass the trial expiration date (hope i don't go to jail for admitting that online  ). i still use it (secretly) at work, and try not to tell anyone for fear of being laughed at.

 that's pretty clever. I should try that next time I download a trial program...

I got Photoshop 6.0 a couple of years ago, from a guy who worked with my dad. He had a ton of stuff, since his wife was a programmer. I haven't upgraded, but PS6 works well enough for me.

lots of companies have gotten wise to that old trick, but for several programs it's still possible to use them after the trial period if you set your clock back to the original date of installation. ;) yep, i'm definitely going to jail!

If you can use PSP, you have an idea of Photoshop. Nothing compares to Photoshop, but the same concepts are there in PSP. Like with anything else, you can get any version of Photoshop through unsavory means. That's how one of my friends has Photoshop...

This is the only picture of her in this one issue, but I've posted several other Record Mirror pictures previously in this thread.

By the way, under this picture there's a caption with a few quotes from Chris. Here's what it says:

"Being surrounded by men has taught me to use my feminine wiles." She also feels happiest wearing levis and casual clothes, but the exception to the rule is the beautiful satin and tulie Theo Porter dress she's wearing here. Costing a mere 47 guineas, from an exclusive Greek Street Boutique. "I don't like to wear too much make-up and I'm forever changing it and experimenting with my eye make-up. I have my hair cut at Sissors in the Kings Road".

How you manage to find gems like these I will never know Sanne, but I'm sure glad God made you a Fleetwood Mac fan. You always include photos I have never seen b4, which is great for an ole time Mac fan like myself to have all these new suprises that are obviously very old.

I believe that's her brother, John with her at the Grammys.

I don't really like her crimped hairstyle, but I don't hate it as much as Gail does.;):D

I don't think I saw that footage. Is Day On The Green '77 that concert with the rainbow in the background?Yep, that's the '77 one. The '76 one was with the cannon on the stage. Some of the live shots in the Rumours foldout are from that '76 appearance (although there may have been more than one day's worth of appearances at that event).

I'll look for those vids & try to post them on sendspace or something.

Really bad false eyelashes like that were common in the '60s. Who came up with the idea of false eyelashes?? Wouldn't you spend your day worrying that they'd fall off with every blink? LOL!

Thanks for posting, Sharon.:) By the way, I thought this thread had been deleted from this board.

It just sunk down.

I didn't remember the thread title or else when I wanted to post pictures I would have pulled it up and continued it too. It's really nice to go through pages of photos that people have posted all in one place. With a new thread, you can't get a full spectrum. Plus, you always see something you haven't seen before or have forgotten, especially if you are a newer member.

Thanks for finding and reviving it, Sharon.
