Passed what? A test? Well, it seems obvious that word is missing throughout the whole song. Also, would it have made more sense to say something like:

But, you say "This test
My darling is best"
"But, we've already passed it. I've tried."
"Ooh wee listen to me", my secret love secretly cried

Eh. It's Stevie, I'll get over it. I still think it sounds great.

i dont understand this song at all

like my initial understanding of it was
her love for this person is NOT a secret anymore coz this person was a friend and now they're MORE
but she's so sad at the end of this song
and that secret love DIED
so she had love for this person and it eventuated into nothing
and their last convo cemented it would never be anything hence it DIED
but what test did they pass
why is is she saying come upstairs if they're not already together?
assuming they're in HER house??????

I think the idea of the song is that she's got a sort of crush on this dude. She's asking him to come upstairs and go to bed with her but he refuses. He's obviously got a broken heart, perhaps from their past relationship, perhaps from another woman. And she realizes that he can't love her. She saying that she doesn't need a full on relationship with him, just a little time to be together. And as she is saying this she realizes they will never be together. So now she's just trying to get him to go to bed, even if it's just to sleep. She just can't bare to leave him alone when he's crying.

I am floored by this song. I have listened it to it over the years as a "demo". How beautiful , timeless and ageless it is to be able to still sing it at the age of 63.

It's a secret love because nobody knows about it, or at least not many people do. They are at the end of their love relationship. The "test"' is the possibility of it working. Not gonna happen, they both know it. IT"S OVER! He's crying and she doesn't want to leave him alone downstairs. She wants to console him and ease the pain and stay with him. She never asked him to come upstairs? Stevie wants to continue the relationship as friends but not as lovers. It's about old wooden balls I think!

^ Yes and when she asks him to come upstairs, I'm sure it's to a bed that they shared as lovers. Now, she's just asking him to come up so that they can hold and comfort each other as friends. That makes it all the more poignant that what was passion is now platonic.

The come upstairs line sounds sexy at first, but then you see it's not that kind of offer and that we're at the end of something, not at the proposition stage.

its not about a relationship. it never happened.
how could it, if her secret love secretly died?

she has a secret love, and has obviously hinted about it...but he didnt respond.
she never told him she loved him...hence the title 'secret love'

so, if it cant be love...then she just wants sex.
and still be friends.

so...if he's 'down here in tears'
he knows how she feels. and doesnt want to risk losing the friendship just for sex...
because he know she loves him...but he doesnt love her.
