Default New Diet

So anyway my gay buddy Craig and I went shopping a couple weeks and he pointed out some really good things I could buy to eat that were good for me. Like most people, I dont like **** that tastes like cardboard, so I ended up buying some pretty good stuff, and liked it and now I went tonight ALL BY MYSELF! Here's what I bought:

2 packages of boneless/skinnless chicken
3 boxes of Zatarain's rice, which I make with the chicken
2%milk
Orange Juice
Bananas
Iceberg mixed lettuce, 2 bags
1 raspberry and 1 balsamic vinagrette dressing
Healthy Choice dinners. On sale 5 for $10
Black olives for the salad
Yoplait Yougrt, once again on sale 20 for $10

I was really proud of myself that I avoided the junk food aisle and I just hope I can stick to this. You wouldnt believe how hard it is to avoid buying those kinds of fatty foods when you are used to eating them!

That is really good. You'll get used to it in no time, especially when you notice you feel better. Besides, it's not as if the things you bought don't taste good, they do. I love yogurt and bananas for a sweet tooth, and some well flavored chicken with rice (perhaps with gravy? mmmm) is very tasty, throw a side of broccoli onto that meal and you've got it made.
Which reminds me I haven't bought yogurt in awhile, I need to pick some up. I wish I had it right now...*sigh*.

Anyway, I hope you like it and keep it up.

Yes indeed. And honestly, if you make your healthy meals flavorful, it will be a breeze for you. "no sweat" as they say, though of course you should sweat, too.
I just wanted to take this opportunity to remind you how good soups are. Very tasty, easy to cook, and many kinds are a fairly healthful choice. I had beef with barley tonight, and it was sooo good. I could totally eat another can right now.

You'll find some good tips & support in the long-running food & fitness thread.

That's a good first step in the right direction. You may want to start adding veggies soon too. And don't worry so much about "looks" yet - you need to concentrate on getting healthy & decreasing your risk for heart disease, stroke, diabetes, colon cancer, etc.

Sounds like you are doing great, David.

Best recipe:

Mesquite marinated grilled chicken slice thin
roasted or grilled onions and bell peppers (sliced)
shredded romaine and iceberg lettuce, mixed
diced roma tomatoes
salsa
shredded cheese (limit)

everything in a 40 calorie, oven baked taco shell or pita bread. You can even have two and still keep under 500 calories for lunch or dinner

Good luck David. I hate diets. I hate exercising too. Bad combo. I've found that I have the best luck with just cutting down on my portions. I just eat enough so I'm not hungry, instead of stuffed. If I try to restrict myself from certain foods altogether, it usually doesn't work. So if I want a cookie, I'll have one instead of four. It seems to work. But I say you have to do whatever works best for you. And it is something different for everyone.

good luck David. it's the hardest thing ever, but it's all in your mind. you can do it. I would suggest taking small steps at first in changing your diet. like, cut out fast food and sodas this week and then next week make another change. to me, making one big drastic change all at once is harder. and start working out slowly. within 6 months you'll see amazing changes.

Good luck to you, David- sounds like you're off to a good start. If you relapse, don't beat yourself up. Just keeping moving forward. xo

just looking back at this, I had a few comments.

Zatarain's rice. good, but I'd only eat it on occassion. you really want to watch starches and sugars, which I think this has a lot of. instead of iceberg, try a lettuce that darker. the darker the veggie, the better it is for you and iceberg is mostly water anyway. the balsamic vin. is awesome. Healthy Choice dinners are good too, but just starting out you may be starving by only eating those. you have to give your stomach time to shrink so that you are used to eating such small portions. be sure to eat something for breakfast too. eat 3 meals and 2 snacks to keep the metabolism up. my standby is a meal replacement bar for breakfast, some small snack, a Healthy Choice meal for lunch, another snack and then a good dinner of chicken breast and 2 veggies. so far, this routine has helped me lose almost 35 lbs.
