I remember him doing that in 09 too.

I wanted Stand Back to disappear from Fleetwood Mac after the Billy/Rick period of the band. When Lindsey rejoined I thought it might be interesting to see how he would approach it But now it's just a waste of space, when so many other songs could take its place.

It's semi-disco dance style is incongruous to Fleetwood Mac's general vibe. It's such a dominant, signature song in the context of her solo career. And this is what she chose to become a staple in a Fleetwood Mac show? She apparently never considered the myriad of inspired choices among her many rarely/never performed Fleetwood Mac songs. It kind of seems like a power-play on her part -- to stake her claim!

One thing I do find interesting is that Lindsey dropped his solo song yet Stevie's solo song stays.

Remember, a show is a complete body of work rather than just a bunch of randomly cobbled songs. There is a flow/ebb to a Fleetwood Mac setlist: It starts off with a bang, settles into a familiar mid-tempo groove, enters into experimental/unusual territory, goes unplugged, gets moody/bluesy, then winds up with an onslaught of uptempo/rocking tunes. Stevie really doesn't have much in the way of uptempo/rocking songs, so I think "Stand Back" is her go-to "get the a$$es out of their seats" number. If you think about it, what other Stevie song would fit into this slot in the show? Other than "Edge of Seventeen" I can't think of anything else.

Running Through The Garden, No Questions Asked, Freedom, Love Is Dangerous, Seven Wonders, Say You Will - even Paper Doll would serve the same purpose, though maybe not as effectively since they aren't as well known. Stand Back certainly does get one's ass out of the seat!

He can be seen on Live in Boston reacting enthusiastically to the song.

hate stand back.
i always find it embarrassing during FM shows. sort of like - this band is above this song.
just doesn't fit.

i also have NEVER liked Don't Stop. Not in 1977, and not now.
I think it's weird without Christine and honestly boring.

I'd love to hear I Don't Want To Know as the show opener or an encore.

Actually, IMO none of those you listed are anywhere near Stand Back. Now, I'm not saying SB is some genius/deep song. However, the synthesizers and the beat make the song a dance favorite for Stevie/Mac fans. It's not really a hard rocking song, or a soft pop song. I always think of Stand Back as Stevie's one "dance song."

I'm sorry, but I have to disagree. If you plopped any of those songs into Stand Back's spot on the setlist, it would pull the energy out of the concert when it should be working up to it's big finale. Basically, what everyone else says...Stevie doesn't have many high-energy, well known songs that work well in that "home stretch" part of the setlist when the band wants asses off seats, singing, dancing, and clapping.

Although, if they were worked correctly, I could see Silver Springs or Rhiannon as the lead in to the Go Your Own Way finale.

I disagree with you both, and think you're drinking the Stand Back koolaid. They don't need that song to bring energy to their shows. It's just a caveat to keep Stevie there. Any of the songs I listed could bring a ton of energy - I mean, my goodness, look at I'm So Afraid and Gold Dust Woman, probably some of the most spectacular moments of the show, and no synthy beats.

I agree that it's dancy, but any song could be dancy if reimagined and performed that way. For that matter, they might as well perform the Deep Dish version of Dreams.

I love Stand Back, and don't mind hearing it. I'm just playing devil's advocate, which comes naturally to me, due to my Libra Moon.

I think you're vastly underestimating the importance of song recognition. Those other songs wouldn't work because most of the fans don't know them. There maybe be other songs they could use in that slot, I don't know, but those aren't it.
