Fleetwood Mac has survived for 51 years, don't reckon Lindsey going will be the end.The notion of survival doesn't mean all that much to me. The planet is filled with bands that have survived, but who wants to listen to them? I drive down the 215 and see a billboard for yet another Journey concert at one of the north county casinos, and I think "Good Lord." Journey survives — but what's the point? Another year playing casinos and fairs milking the old hits made famous by the original singer? It really is just a paycheck at that point. If Fleetwood Mac wants to "survive" and tour with strange new members, milking old hits made famous by the departed, it is just a paycheck. No interest to me. Those who find it interesting are in luck, certainly — but I wonder whether they're kidding themselves.

The music will live on, the crowds will still flock to see them, the money will roll in. I'm not so sure that the music will live on. Behind the Mask and Time are as dead as the next album in the cutout bin. This latest (and I hope last) incarnation will leave no lasting music, no legacy. The crowds will still flock, probably, and the money will roll in. The band just wants a paycheck, and they'll get a paycheck.

We don't know why, it will come out in the end but hell the facts are still muddied about the Weston sacking and I wasn't even born then. I was trying to remember all the members who've been sacked: Danny Kirwan, Bob Weston, Dave Walker, Lindsey Buckingham (twice), Billy Burnette? Lindsey's distinction — a two-time sacking — must hold the record. How embarrassing. (Would you say that Brunning was sacked? Or was he hired only for one gig, which was made clear to him beforehand?)

I don't get too caught up in the personalities, just hope we get some new music, and a new album. It's the personalities that make the music. Why not get "caught up" in them? Who do you think made Black Magic Woman and Sands of Time and Tusk and Sara and Come a Little Bit Closer and the Derelict?

I reject the sociological view of Fleetwood Mac. It isn't a neighborhood, where people can move in and out without affecting the particular character. Fleetwood Mac, to the contrary, has had so many people move in and out since 1967 that it has several characters, some memorable and some utterly unmemorable. The revolving door policy has certainly generated a bunch of very different audiences, many of which have been at each other's throats.

.

Does the first time really count? It's never really been portrayed that they sacked him/he left unwillingly. He didn't want to tour at all and according to him nearly lost his sanity making the Tango album so he basically had to leave. It's not like they kicked him out while he still actively wanted to be in the band. Isn't that why Stevie 'attacked' him (her words) and that ugly fight happened? She got so mad that he was leaving even though I read once that she claimed she knew he had one foot out the door for a long time because he was so unhappy.

exactly there is ZERO artistry in this decision. Simply a cash grab to GRAB YOUR CASH, with a fill in band. Will they sound great? Yes. But it's not the real Mac and at this point the ONLY real mac is the fab 5. When Christine wasn't there I felt the same way and did not see them live. I find it funny that they need to always replace lindsey with TWO FREAKING guitarists. What does that tell you?

It took a long time to return to this particular formation, but it was lost again when Christine left in 1997. And it seemed to just be coming together again when she returned. It's sad that the five fell apart again.

This is why Lindsey has stopped paying attention to her a long time ago. After 53 years, he was really tired of her lies, as well as she was probably tired of his hurtful words. But I’m sure it never, ever crossed his mind to get her fired.

I can't quote all your posts. But, I generally agree with everything you've posted in this thread. My sources have told me virtually the same thing. And I have a few. I love Stevie's solo work. After OSOTM the writing lost it's sparkle. The magic that took your heart strings was gone. She tries to be a version of herself instead of just being herself. Sure there's great tunes afterward. I love Illume and a few others.

She's become the kind of person I never thought she would become. She and Christine are such polar opposites in class and elegance. A friend of mine, (who isn't into FM, but into rock and roll) said, "Stevie Nicks is the Rosanne Barr of music." The trajectory of attitude and class have diminished. Her fame is based on people's love of the fantasies she's built over the years. Me included.

I don't fault her for not signing everyone an autograph. It's sad that people do wait in the rain and don't get to talk to her. But, she simply can't do it.

However, it brings a story to mind: I sat next to Judith Light on a trip to LAX from JFK. I got to chat with her for 6 hrs. She said to me, "Part of my job is to touch and talk with as many fans as I can. I enjoy it. And it reminds me that my art is nothing without them" I was shocked when she said that to me. I personally would hate to be famous. I mean look at the folks here on The Ledge.
Some of them are plum crazy. Imagine what it's like out there.

My thoughts exactly. I never thought I'd see the day where I would say:"She became a diva".

The Catdancer

Her line that she can't sign autographs predates those videos by decades .I went to a Tom Petty concert at the San Diego Sports Arena in 1985 a few months before the release of Rock a Little where Stevie was a guest performer and when she was getting on a bus after the show a fan asked her for an autograph and she turned and said "If i give you one I have to do it for everyone"

Really? I had no idea.

I SO agree with this! While I get that people's writing style changes over time I am totally with you about how that whole mysterious thing she had going on was one of my favorite things about her songs.
Sara is the perfect example of that. Who even knows what on earth she is talking about/trying to say in that song but the lyrics are BEAUTIFUL and the song is just gorgeous.

Agreed. But also GDW and Angel are perfect examples of that.

Rumours 5 are magic. The rest is good music, sure, but magic? No.

I've just gone on Lindsey's website- there's a Seeds we sow overview video that I don't remember being on there recently. Maybe it was and I missed it. In the light of recent events his comments on it take on a greater resonance.

The song choices on the video seem very apt: Seeds we sow, End of Time and Illumination.

The thing with this band is, sure, they are professional musicians who will still put on a technically good show. They will play a bunch of songs that the audience knows and will most likely make a fortune. But there is something specific about this fivesome that just gels and when together, the game is upped several levels. In 1997, they were a LOT better than the 1987-90 band (and sorry but I just refuse to even talk about the county fair circuit in the mid-90's), and something was just not right from 2003-2013. Live and on Say You Will, Christine's absence was glaring and it just wasn't the same. In 2014, it all came back. There was a magic in the performances that had been missing for the prior decade. It's the same with Buckingham McVie. I actually enjoy the album (as I did Say You Will), but it just wasn't the same without the three voices on it. It is an absolute shame that the likely final chapter of this band is going to be written in this way. And that's not a knock on Mike Campbell or Neil Finn. They're there to replicate what was already done and they will do it professionally, but whatever it is that comes together with the Rumours 5 will not be replicated.

A couple of weeks after it was all confirmed I still don't know what to think, given that we don't know the full circumstances yet.

Much as the Mac's live shows had become more than a little ritualistic, even with Christine's return, I always enjoyed them and got a kick out of the fact that casual fans came out of the gig feeling the same.

When you've had a realistic claim to being the world's biggest act at one point, even though that was 40 years ago, a line-up change at this stage in the game is not going to work in the same way that the growth and setbacks pre 1975 eventually did. Neil and Mike are in a class or two above Billy and Rick, however and the uninformed fans plus Stevie diehards may still make the band a worthwhile live proposition at this point, although you have to worry about Christine's continued ability to deliver.

I admit I am intrigued by the possibility of studio recordings, particularly involving Neil Finn. Maybe Christine's desire to do a blues album could somehow morph into part of an album with the FM moniker in it. I wouldn't put the mortgage on that happening. What an irony it would be were a new FM album to emerge.

Logic somehow dictates that Fleetwood Mac #14 has been put together to fulfil a contractual obligation to tour and that may well be it. Christine surely didn't come out of retirement for this and John has indicated that by 2020 he will be done.

Given Lindsey's solo and BuckVie creativity over the last few years I'm just annoyed that a wider audience will miss out on his full potential in the setting of Fleetwood Mac. I'm sure he's difficult to work with and that's partly how we've got to this point. So many lost opportunities. It's just too sad.

When this first hit, Journey was the first thing I kept thinking of. I mean, it's not AS bad considering Steve Perry's voice essentially became Journey in the public's mind whereas Fleetwood Mac has three vocalists who the public general associates with the band. BUT, it's the same concept. We're going to hire people to fill in for the guy who you associate with these songs. In the Eagles case, it's bad enough, but Glen died (and while I think Don Felder got the shaft, he wasn't to the Eagles what Lindsey was to Fleetwood Mac...music to Hotel California and all). Back to Journey, I cringe as hard as possible when I see what they're out doing today. It's awful. It sounds like karaoke. I've turned down several opportunities to see them despite the fact that I lose my voice trying to hit every note on Don't Stop Believing at every wedding I have attended for the last 15 years. Watching two guys who have no association with the Fleetwood Mac book of work try to replicate the music that Lindsey wrote, produced, arranged...while Lindsey sits down the road fully capable of being there...meh, not interested.

don't you find it interesting though, that everyone - everyone! - including Christine, Mick and John - praise the experience of working with him. Trent Reznor. Little Big Town. those electronica guys. all sides of the spectrum.

the only time the "difficult to work with" arises is when you have SN in the same room. toxic exes. Christine said something like that in interviews for BuckVie - that she has always find it incredibly easy to work with him, and it's just gotten easier now, and that she can only ascribe these difficulties to somehow always arise from SN / LB relationship.

Yes, basically any inference that Lindsey has been difficult to work with has usually come from Stevie. Throw in Tom Petty and Mike Campbell onto that list too as being able to work with him.

Maybe she's a giant pain in the ass to work with and after 10/20/30/40/50+ years, he just doesn't give af about it and says what he thinks.

Likely, they're both annoying and while Lindsey seems to be able to want to work with her, she just has no interest in even trying. Ugh...I find this whole thing to be increasingly irritating daily.

yeah i think 2 of them together are just toxic to each other. she has even said in interviews how they know how to keep pushing each others' buttons till one of them explodes. he seemed like he wanted to make peace and considered creating together as a way to it. she seems to thrive on milking their drama. or maybe it's just their private lives which provides him peace and warmth, and maybe she was not able to find that kind of peace.

Yes, I think that's a fair point. I was doubtless thinking that the difficult to work with phrase was in the context of Stevie, and my phrasing has unfairly tarred other situations with the same brush. I've always tried to moderate my annoyance publicly at Miss Nicks because I'm never going to be in possession of all the facts. I want to vent a frustration without the excessive bashing of one or other member (or ex-member) that can go on here.

Having said all that, I will nail my colours to the mast and in an assessment of relative creativity, I'm a Team Lindsey guy.

i just find it interesting that he has a "difficult to work with" reputation that mainly stems from what his ex says. most other collaborators praise both of them. and Christine definitely praises how easy it is for her to work with him.

of course he's not perfect. nobody is. but he is not going around bashing SN for making it difficult to work with an ex - while she seems to, and people who take everything she says as a gospel keep parroting and amplifying that message.

i've heard some stories about him reacting when he shouldn't have, and practically every. single. time. the story starts with something that SN or her assistant has thrown in the mix that provoked him. granted, he should know better and try to hold it down instead of being triggered to respond. you can see him biting his tongue a number of times in the Destiny Rules doc.

Fwiw Stevie isn't the only person who's said he can be difficult to work with. Ken Caillait said the same thing, along the lines of that he was intense to an extreme/had some issues in general and so it could be stressful working with him in the studio. I even read an interview with John Stewart where he really praises Lindsey but still says his work style isn't for everyone because he's so intensely a perfectionist about everything.
But I get what you mean, Stevie is the main person where there's real issues in dealing with each other.

yes, Ken is the only other person. and he's talking about 40 years ago. i asked Ken several times on twitter whether he dislikes LB because some of his posts certainly came across as such and he would always insist that he's just describing his intense focus in those days, but that he has enormous respect for him. LB definitely had issues 40 years ago. Christine recently said he was asocial and had an unhealthy focus 40 years ago, and how much nicer it is to work with a much more socially adjusted guy he is now.

Christine said something like that in interviews for BuckVie - that she has always find it incredibly easy to work with him, and it's just gotten easier now, and that she can only ascribe these difficulties to somehow always arise from SN / LB relationship.

Sadly, this huge mess is the outcome of that: toxic exes.

He's mean to her, sometimes too much. But she's a snowflake and after 53 years she should know that is Lindsey being Lindsey. She knows it and she uses it to her advantage.
She wants to have an easy last FM tour so the ultimatum is her only weapon to get rid of him (you need evidence to hold an abusive card).
She provokes him in front of everybody and instead of ignoring her, he just explodes. He should know better at this point but no. When it comes to Stevie, he just can't say no.
Being the loyal person Lindsey is, I bet he never saw this punch in the face from Stevie coming. Hell, it's their usual routine to fight like an old married couple. But this time she went beyond and told Mick to fire him or else she wasn't touring with the band anymore.

Sadly everything was broken. Profesionally and personally. It's a shame and it also affected friends, family and fans. They don't care and that's what hurt the most. :distress:

Do you think they are remotely aware of the backlash happening or are they so removed from the day to day that they are obliviously unaware. I just want some sort of inkling of how the conversation goes...."So Stevie, there are flyers all over LA saying you destroyed FM" "Mick, after this last stunt, your fans are wondering if you are planning to file for bankruptcy again, or still sleeping with Stevie?" "Christine, you just released an album with him, spoke glowingly of working with him and spent the better part of the back half of 2017 together, fans are wondering where your conscience (balls) have gone. Particularly since you all seemed so loved up with each other at Musicares"

Haha! It's good to be John, right?:laugh:

Every time I think about Musicares the more I realized Stevie was generous enough to let him have that last time as a FM member with his family around. :(

Why though? KB spoke glowingly of the night on her IG. And when you go back and look at the videos--she genuinely seemed happy with him (grabbing his hand, holding his arm....) I don't know--I guess it's insulting to think they are truly that fake all the time. I probably should NOT try to get in their heads to much. I will drive myself insane. Yes, also Leelee referred to Stevie as "my Queen". Lindsey and his family clearly didn't know what was going on.

If all that love at Musicares wasn't fake, then why was Lindsey fired a couple of days later? What happened with all that "genuine" love that was pouring from Stevie's heart?

I can't believe that someone would actually type this comment and what it implies out...
If you want to say that Lindsey did it to himself and deserved to get kicked out of the band, you can do that all you want and talk about the things that most likely led directly to this. You can say he's too demanding, too much of an asshole, too unreasonable, too arrogant, wants the band to work around what he wants, all of that.
But if you want to talk about his personal problems and history with abusive behavior, then that's something that should be talked about on its own and seriously and not referenced in a throwaway line that, like so many of your recent comments, has very, very little to do with what people are actually talking about, which is their frustration with how the band has handled this.

Imagine if I wanted to talk badly about Stevie and instead of saying things like "she's difficult to work with, she's a diva, she's too dependent on her entourage", I just made a bunch of references to cocaine addictions and sleeping around and going nutty on klonopin. Imagine how inappropriate that would be.

I don't think any of it's funny despite my snappy patter. In case you missed it, as I've said before I sometimes say things in a certain way to make a point. When people are physically abusive and stop I don't necessarily think they stop being emotionally abusive. I don't know if that's the case here but everyone certainly has their jump to conclusions mat out. I do apologize if I've offended you. I've been the recipient of domestic violence myself including when I was pregnant so my viewpoint may be somewhat skewed. I just wanted to see if she was going to blindly defend Josh Homme too. She's yet to make a cogent argument that Stevie got Lindsey fired.

Anyhoo, I found out from a fellow crew buddy that one of the corporate gigs he worked, FM was the entertainment. He said that LB left after NGBA, however the rest of the band kept on... it happened about 3 months ago. It doesn't sound right to me cuz WHO was playing the friggin guitar for the rest of the show? Neil? I'm trying to find out more info but it's hard cuz of the insane hours.
Then —— he said he's booked on a gig with SN in Denver on October (he did not say FM)....
So if this future info is correct - the question is obvious... SN is booking solo corporate gigs while on tour with FM?
And the plot thickens...

Fleetwood Mac played a corporate gig recently? I didn't know that.
But that is interesting. If the band cut him off in February I imagine that the seeds of whatever was going on had already started so I guess it makes sense.

And if that's true about Stevie then it's pretty ridiculous. While we don't know much details, we do know for sure (thanks to Rick Turner's comments) that Lindsey wanting to do some solo dates had a big role in this so that's just unfair if true.

Corporate gigs probably don’t count, since those private events that are typically not advertised and are closed to the general public. I know that they did one in 2014 before the first proper show. It’s not something promoters would have objections with.

You mean the 2014 gig that had footage used in some Sunday morning news piece about the band? It was either CBS or NBC. I think it was considered a warmup gig.

As for Stevie’s possible corporate gig, it’s not something promoters would consider competition to a Fleetwood Mac tour and the corporate show’s sponsors likely pay for any insurance for the talent, so no money coming out of the pockets of the band. From a business perspective, it has zero bearing on the Fleetwood Mac tour.

I think the reason this all happened is, LB does not want to be part of an oldies act and was not enthused about going out on tour with no new music. (Stevie's fault). So I'm guessing this lead to much friction between he and SN (he blames her for that) and it came to a head either at the corporate event for during negotiations for the new tour.

Completely agree, although there are probably a lot more layers to it than just that.

The corporate gig story notwithstanding, because it’s the first I’ve heard about it, let’s just assume it was a basic war of wills. My experience in the industry is extremely basic compared to the machinery of Fleetwood Mac, and even then it’s more complex than I would have ever dreamed, so I can only imagine what happened there. In other words, the final blowout might have been something that would have just been another fight in most circumstances, but the added industry pressures turned it into something bigger. Again, we don’t really know what went down, which is why I’m reserving judgment.

If nothing else, I love that even at this late stage, Fleetwood Mac continues being one of the greatest sh*tshows in rock. It’s like they’re watching Yes and trying to top it.

I personally would hate to be famous. I mean look at the folks here on The Ledge.

Ugh...I find this whole thing to be increasingly irritating daily.

um, no. Ken Caillat has indicated he was no picnic to work with, as has Richard in his own way. Maybe not every minute of every day, but yeah, he could be intense in a not-great way in the studio.

Even within the band- Mick called him a "martinet" in his first book, which, if you look it up, is basically a fancier way of saying "d*ck". Christine has said in the beginning he was kind of aloof and quite moody-- she said the song Over My Head was a lot about him "you can take me to paradise/then again you can be cold as ice" "Your mood is like a circus wheel/you're changing all the time" and so on. She played it out into a love song but the impetus was him... And when she talks now about how he's changed, and become more easygoing, well, she's saying he wasn't those things in the past.
He was pushy with John, trying to tell him how/what to play from the early days and John pushed back and set him straight.

So, while Stevie got the worst of it, no, she was not the only one to say he was difficult, or if you prefer, "challenging" to work with.

I don't think it's ever been a secret that he's a very intense, difficult guy to deal with, at least in the studio. But we, and the band know, that he has the artistic vision that the rest of them lack, and THAT'S WHAT CATAPULTED THEM TO STARDOM. But now that they've embraced their "oldies act status"(by you know who refusing to record), so why the hell do they need a visionary?

So Lindsey has a Wagnerian Phil Spector approach to the studio. Who can blame him? Look at the disparate personalities he has to work with, and get on the same page! ...and not just that, but help him articulate his vision! It can't be easy. I really, really want to hear what Lindsey has to say about this...from the joy of BuckVie to this in a few months...c'mon.

They don’t need him anymore because he’s the only one who still want to do something more than playing Dreams. He’s the only one who cares about the product and the fans more than about the money.

If this is the case (and I agree with you that it probably is) then the joke is on the band. Now that they have two replacements, they will either HAVE to play a different set and/or perform the old set quite differently. Knowing the unadventurous spirit of the remaining four, they will do something lame like simply trying to plug Neil and Mike into Lindsey’s former parts. But if they’re honest with themselves at the rehearsals, they’ll realize they can’t do that.

I think we'll get a small idea of their set list during their interview Wednesday with CBS This Morning. I'm curious how you think the band should utilize Mike and Neil. From your post, it sounds like you think FM will keep pretty much the same set list and just replace Lindsey and his songs with Mike and Neil. What would you rather have them do instead? Also, are you definitely going to skip this tour, or are you waiting to get more information, such as set list or reviews, before you make up your mind?

I actually am kind of worried that they'll perform a lot of songs pre-1975, which a lot of concert goers may not recognize. I'd rather they do deep cuts from the White Album right up to Behind the Mask, personally. The set list is going to be a big factor in whether I see them or not.

You can take this to the bank. They will not do anything from Behind the Mask, As Long As You Follow, or any deep cuts from albums Lindsey has played on. If they wanted to play those songs, they would have hired Billy. It would be a big mistake to try and imitate Lindsey. Good grief that would be bad and its something they wont consider. Any deep cuts from Mirage or Tusk are out the window since Lindsey is not there. They will crank out the hits more than ever. The new guys will perform probably 2 songs pre-Nicks. But nothing from the Bob Welch era.

I don't think much will be revealed about the setlist. We will get the standard B.S. how Lindsey loves his solo work and we wish him the best blah blah blah.

I completely see and agree with your logic. However, given how jacked up this band is and has proven to still be, I still wouldn't be shocked to see a deep cut dusted off.

I hope fans are prepared for the Stevie & Mike Campbell love fest, because it's going to happen...and it will be nauseating.

And honestly, I could see Mike or Neil pushing for a few deep cuts and nothing against them, but because it comes from one of them and not Lindsey, I'm sure it will be received warmly by some folks in the band.

I don't see the new guys wanting to touch any of Lindsey's stuff. You cant imitate Lindsey or replace him in a literal sense. That is why they will do 2 older pre-Nicks songs.
There is bad blood. I cant see Lindsey being fired any anyone in the band think its a good idea to do Lindsey songs.

It never stopped Waddy from butchering Gypsy.

Apples and Oranges
Gypsy is Stevie's song and she always sung her Mac hits on her solo tours. In addition, Gypsy is sung by Stevie not Waddy.
You think they joined Fleetwood Mac to perform Lindsey's songs? Interesting theory but I could not disagree more. IMHO you are setting yourself up for failure if you try to be Lindsey and sing his songs and try to play guitar like him. Its not going to happen and no musician who already is established in their career is going to start imitating another performer. Nobody wants a Fleetwood Mac sounding cover band. Imagine if Stevie was fired and they hired some woman who twirled and dressed like Stevie. Do you really think someone would do that? You must be true to yourself.

I think i partially misunderstood you. I was referencing Lindsey's guitar work. They really can't do a show without attempting his guitar parts.

Will they do Big Love? no probably not. Never Going Back Again? Probably not.

But I'm sure they will do many songs that he musically was a huge part of and it will be different without his touch on those songs.

Lindsey was their guitarist so no doubt the new members must play his work. We had a misunderstanding. I thought you meant Lindsey's songs. I don't think they will do any of his songs. In 1987 and 1990 they did Go Your Own Way. But I think it was traditional since it always closed a Mac show. Lindsey left. This time I would be surprised if they did it because Lindsey did not leave and there is bad blood. We shall see.

Well, in the real world, if you stomped off in a huff and left your co-workers to try and muddle through finishing a job for a high-paying client without you; that's not generally good for your long-term job security. IF it happened that is, (we have no real proof that it did)...there is enough running wild with speculation going on around here already so I will withhold judgement.

Regarding Stevie allegedly having solo dates on the books in the next year or so...I wouldn't be shocked if this initial tour with Mike and Neil is relatively short in order to test the waters. Do 2-3 months of dates and see how it goes. Stevie can do her thing for a while and then regroup again later in the year.

I'd be willing to bet money that they'll do "Oh Well". Mainly because Mike Campbell did an amazing job on this with Tom Petty on a recent tour. Other possibilities: "Black Magic Woman" and "I Need To Know".
But I wouldn't get your hopes up for any other Lindsey period deep cuts.
Count on not hearing "Big Love", "Monday Morning", "Never Going Back Again", "Second Hand News". I would hope they wouldn't do "Go Your Own Way", but they did during the Tango and Behind The Mask tours without Lindsey.

They’re doing GYOW. It’s not even worth speculating. It’s a forgone conclusion. I doubt they do any of his others, although Neil would do a great job on SHN.

Also, “Oh Well” is a given.

Between the stuff they have to play and the early stuff they’ve hinted at playing, I also imagine there will be a Crowded House song or two and probably a Tom Petty song or two. Given Mike co-wrote SDMHA, that seems to be a no-brainer.

Heartbreakers song - check
Crowded House song - check
Peter Green tribute - check
Stevie solo song - check
Stevie/Mike Campbell, Stop Draggin' My Heart Around -check
The Chain - check
GYOW - check

Now that will be a concert experience I can't wait to not attend.

Fleetwood Mac is Officially Dead.

Fleetwood Mac performing live in 2013.

The blues-turned-rock/pop group Fleetwood Mac is hitting the road this summer, with tour dates expected to start in June. The band is celebrating more than 50 years in music, and to commemorate the occasion, it committed suicide this week.

According to a statement released by Fleetwood Mac’s management, the band made the incomprehensible decision to fire its front man, guitarist, and producer Lindsey Buckingham, and replace him with, wait for it, two (2) other guitar players — Mike Campbell, formerly of Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, and Neil Finn of Crowded House. (I’ll admit to having great respect for the former and no idea who the latter is.)

The History
Buckingham, who joined the band on New Year’s Eve 1974 alongside then-girlfriend Stevie Nicks, served as one of the band’s three main songwriters, its lead guitarist, and its creative muse both in the studio and on tour. His tenure lasted from ’74 to 1987, when after recording the hit album “Tango in the Night,” he decided against joining his bandmates on tour. That decision ultimately led to a physical altercation between Buckingham and Nicks (according to Fleetwood’s 1990 tell-all biography) at the home of songwriter, vocalist, and keyboard player Christine McVie. Soon thereafter, Fleetwood Mac announced they were hitting the road with, you guessed it, two new guitar players — Rick Vito and Billy Burnette.

Then in the spring of 1997, Buckingham rejoined Nicks, McVie, and founding members Mick Fleetwood and John McVie (ex-husband of Christine), for a reunion concert and tour. “The Dance,” a 17-track mix of new songs and old hits, earned the band Grammy nominations and critical acclaim. The Mac was back.

The band soldiered on (albeit without Christine McVie) with a new album in 2003 and tours in 2003, 2004, 2009, and 2013. Then in 2014, McVie rejoined the band for tour dates in ’14–15.

Fleetwood Mac Fires Lindsey Buckingham
Fleetwood Mac was expected to hit the road in 2018 for what some speculated would be a farewell tour, but that all came to a screeching halt on Monday, when news broke that the band had fired Buckingham.

Rolling Stone confirmed Buckingham was fired “after a disagreement over the band’s upcoming tour.” Both Fleetwood, the band’s drummer, and the band collectively released statements:

Fleetwood Mac issued a collective statement about the news, saying: “We are thrilled to welcome the musical talents of the caliber of Mike Campbell and Neil Finn into the Mac family. With Mike and Neil, we’ll be performing all the hits that the fans love, plus we’ll be surprising our audiences with some tracks from our historic catalogue of songs. Fleetwood Mac has always been a creative evolution. We look forward to honoring that spirit on this upcoming tour.”
Mick Fleetwood added, “Fleetwood Mac has always been about an amazing collection of songs that are performed with a unique blend of talents … We jammed with Mike and Neil and the chemistry really worked and let the band realize that this is the right combination to go forward with in Fleetwood Mac style. We know we have something new, yet it’s got the unmistakable Mac sound.”
They also issued this rather cold statement: “Lindsey Buckingham will not be performing with the band on this tour. The band wishes Lindsey all the best.”

Nickswood Mac?
Fleetwood Mac, as a band, is often described as a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. Despite being the musical genius behind the band’s sound, Buckingham has never recreated the Mac magic in his solo career. The same is true for Nicks, who, despite some commercial success, could never reach the echelons that she could with her band. Similarly, Fleetwood Mac was unable to achieve any real success in the 1990s without Buckingham.

So what could have possibly driven the members of this successful, albeit quarrelsome, band to cast out one of their own like this?

On numerous occasions, Nicks has stated she has no desire to record new music with Fleetwood Mac. The reason? Money.

Speaking to London’s Evening Standard, Nicks commented: “I don’t write as many songs anymore because with the Internet, the way that kids listen to music, all the streaming, and the fact that if they’re very savvy, if they want to get it and not pay for it, they can.”
Later at that same January 2017 event, Nicks claimed to speak for Fleetwood Mac when she said, “Would you rather spend a year in the studio or get back on the road? I think that the band would choose to tour.”

The irony of that statement is that the band’s two other songwriters, Buckingham and Christine McVie, released an album as a duo (with the backing of fellow Mac members Fleetwood and John McVie!) just a few months later in 2017. The only band member not involved in the project was Nicks, who hasn’t released an album with new material since 2011.

Despite claims to the contrary, 2017’s “Lindsey Buckingham/Christine McVie” was intended to be a Fleetwood Mac album, but when Nicks wouldn’t budge on recording, became a duo album with Fleetwood and McVie as the rhythm section.

Money Trumps Creativity?
Did Buckingham, ever the creative driving force behind the band’s music, push a little too hard for a new record, resulting in the decision to ultimately fire him? Right now, no one knows for sure, and given the nature of how Fleetwood Mac operates, the public may never know exactly what happened.

In January, Fleetwood Mac became the first band to be named MusiCares Person of the Year. Artists including John Legend, Keith Urban, and Lorde paid tribute to the band’s music. Then later, Fleetwood Mac took the stage for what was, in all likelihood, its final performance as a band.

No carefully worded press statement can clean up the fact that Fleetwood Mac fired one of their own. And despite their hopes that this weren’t true, a stage filled with 15 guitarists couldn’t replace Lindsey Buckingham.

Fleetwood Mac played their last set in January 2018, and now Fleetwood Mac is dead.

Definitely not alone, those versions are horrible. Although to be fair, I don’t think Gypsy sounded good live until The Dance. They figured out how to play it on stage and she could still hit the right notes. The current versions are as lumbering and dull as modern day Rhiannon.

Ken Caillat, Rumours producer extraordinaire, chimed in on the topic of LB firing while in the middle of talking about some drone today:

Ken Caillat
The way I heard lindsey demanded nobody go on tour and make money but rather wait two years for him to finish a solo album. Stevie said your solo album is not going to sell and I’m not getting any younger if you don’t want to go don’t. Considering they’re all in their 70s now and John may still be fighting cancer, It feels like it might have been a mutually beneficial arrangement for everyone. Stevie was happy to put Mike Campbell to work coming from Tom Petty’s camp. Neil Finn should be very exciting Singing Lindseys vocals.
Maybe it’s a win-win for everyone is Fan’s getting new music and a different tour. Maybe Neil and Mike will be the new spark for the old Fleetwood Mac?

several fans informed him there's a video of LB which directly contradicts the lies somebody must have told Ken. he backed off when directly asked.

so, considering some keep demanding to hear directly from Lindsey what his plans were, our own @frozenlove graciously decided to share a video of Lindsey talking to fans on January 27, 2018, about a week before he was [first?] fired from FM, which makes it very clear what his intentions were, corroborates what Rick Turner said, and completely discredits lies apparently now spread by Ken, and probably others.

He says he was goint to put out a solo album in April, but he's instead going to do a best of and do a bunch of dates in with the FM tour. So he was planning to do his solo tour and FM tour at the same time and his solo dates in between FM dates. IMO Hold Me worked on B/MCV because of Lindsey. Ken hasn't been a member of the band's inside circle for a very long time so he was probably just misinformed.

Lindsey said during the interviews promoting BuckVie that his album was going to be RELEASED this year and that seems to be where the trouble started from (releasing the album/doing solo shows for it), so the idea that he would ask for two whole years just to finish it is ridiculous.

And major props to whoever took that video!

Fleetwood Mac, at least that version, died when they decided to credit the album to LBCM.

I guess I saw the writing on the wall last year. There was no way I could see how the LB-SN working relationship could have survived a Fleetwood Mac album not being credited to Fleetwood Mac because of her. The Brits might not have internalized it, but there’s no way Lindsey would ever find that acceptable.

That’s why I’m not even especially upset now. It was already over. It was never going to happen with Stevie AND Lindsey in the same band anymore.

.

Totally agree with this. Lindsey probably never got over the fact that it wasn't able to be called a FM album because of her/they couldn't tour with new music and Stevie probably never got over that the album happened to begin with/that everyone knew it would've been a Mac album if not for her/that the title was too close to Buckingham Nicks.
Tensions were probably extra high because of all this and a somewhat simple conflict over tour dates turned ugly.

That’s why I’m not even especially upset now. It was already over. It was never going to happen with Stevie AND Lindsey in the same band anymore.
yet Lindsey went with it. he must be regretting it NOW. you seem to be implying he was regretting it last year?

it does seem that BuckVie working together has always been a point of contention doe SN - since World Turning on. maybe that's why all this fell apart, especially considering Rick mentioned Chris was considering guesting on LB's solo dates?

Totally agree with this. Lindsey probably never got over the fact that it wasn't able to be called a FM album because of her/they couldn't tour with new music and Stevie probably never got over that the album happened to begin with/that everyone knew it would've been a Mac album if not for her/that the title was too close to Buckingham Nicks.
Tensions were probably extra high because of all this and a somewhat simple conflict over tour dates turned ugly.

now that makes more sense.

Also I have a feeling that the band is going to tell one story, Lindsey is going to tell another story and this thing is gonna get ugly :distress:

i would be surprised if either Lindsey or the band tells what happened. just remember all the spin about BuckVie never being a FM album to begin with. (although Chris may spill something off the cuff in some interview.)

but Mick will have m&gs and he'll spill something as he usually does. and people may catch LB (like in this video) and he may tell them something. LB is pretty straightforward when not being interviewed / on the record.

now that makes more sense.

Yeah, I actually just remembered the one interview where Stevie was asked about the Buckingham McVie album and she said something along the lines of "I don't understand why they're doing it". It was a pretty awkward read so I imagine the whole thing never sat well with her.

And it probably never sat well with Lindsey that it was never supposed to be a 'Buckingham McVie' album to begin with.

Fleetwood Mac, at least that version, died when they decided to credit the album to LBCM.

I guess I saw the writing on the wall last year. I agree. And I honestly believe that $he was very jealous of BuckVie as much as he was upset that he didn't get his FM album. I believe it was gas on an already hot fire.

And Christine is coming back just trying to re-start her career. So not internalizing may have been a smart move for her.

I honestly believe she was sick of the $N/LB dynamic when she left. (not that it was the main reason she left; but, the politics had to be draining)

I’m positive he wasn’t happy about it not being a FM album, but got voted down as to how it was going to be released and promoted. They came up with the “it felt like a duet album” script (odd, since they really didn’t sing together much), and forced him to stick to it.

I mean, we all knew that was a bunch of crap, right?

i think so too. Stevie said she'd record if Chris was there. Chris came back. LB must have breathed multiple sighs of relief, thinking ok, now the album is a go. they went to the studio. i think some reported on twitter that Stevie was with them a time or two, also. and then all of the sudden she went to Nashville and some contractual obligation was pulled out of thin air.

1. your album isn't going to sell. Nice. Though of course it fits with her "nobody buys albums anymore"

2. I'm not getting any younger. It's about me, people.

3. Stevie happy to put Mike to work. In her band. Coz it is. Make no mistake.

4. Neill singing Lindsey vocals. Well there's your answer about if they'll do LB songs.

I don't see this as a win-win, but very much as a lose-lose. But whatever.

Seems like she's the one who made the ultimatums-- 1) if you don't want to go, don't go. 2) And then to the band-- it's me or him..... you go with me now, or go with him two years from now (the implication being, without her then coz she ain't getting no younger. Which, to be fair, that part is definitely true for all of them).

I don't see him in that video at all suggesting they should not tour as FM, but that he's holding off the solo album till next year and will put out the best of and do shows essentially in support of THAT in between the Mac shows.

I guess I can imagine him putting out an alternative option of just not touring as FM til he can get all his solo sh&t together but given his demeanor in the vid I can't see him presenting that as a serious option but maybe like half joking "hey, you could wait till I do my solo stuff" you know, like you waited for Stevie to do hers which meant we couldn't do a FM album......

Ken's comments seem to suggest the spin things will take. the line "mutually beneficial arrangement for everyone" i.e. they'd all make money on a big Mac tour and then go do your piddly little solo stuff.

Ken is providing cover for the band. Lindsey and Christine commented on this tour last year. Lindsey even stated it was not the end of FM and there would be other tours (which surprised everyone). Everyone signed on the dotted line per Christine. Does anyone really believe Lindsey asked for 2 years LOL.
Someone needs to use Stevie's language on Stevie and tell her to stop making albums because they don't $ell.
She is still sticking to that false statement. She loves to record solo albums but only has this standard for Fleetwood Mac.

What a sad season for Mac fans.
I like Stevie as part of the Mac but if what is Rumoured is true, 'him or me' I'd go with 'him'.
Now I understand about the hoopla and the megastardom etc. surrounding this particular Diva, but IMO what Mac was really about, even more than the soap opera, was the MUSIC.
For me anyway, BuckVie was proof that the 4 core musicians of the band could still produce some sparks. At this point, filling a stadium be damned. The legacy in music history is what should matter, not the latest bitchfest, or musical chairs member swapping.

This new lineup jumps the shark for me.

You know you might be into something re LB statement about the Classic cash grabs. It may have under the surface - hey FM actually have a full New album and we are forced to tour it as half of the band right now while we could have been that rare band at the Classic who is still prolific and performs new music that is just as great as our classics! And maybe that’s where that LA review of classic West was going to - why can’t we hear the new music from the Mac when we know it exists?

I could be wrong, but I don't think Ken has anything to do with the band anymore. I think what he was saying was a guess, and not even an educated one. He should probably decline comment at this point.

It's so figures that when we're trying to get information from the actual source that there's a jackhammer going in the background. It's like, what kind of music gods are at work here? I listened to it very closely and what I heard him say was that he kind of confirmed that he wanted to do some solo stuff in between the Fleetwood Mac stuff. That to me pretty much confirms what this whole thing is about - Lindsey wanting to tour solo in between the Mac dates, and the rest of the band not allowing it. Both sides stubbornly stood their ground, resulting in the firing.

That to me was the weirdest thing. She was complaining about Chris not being there (it was a boy band and all that) and she missed Chris so much etc. So Chris comes back and I thought:"Now, it's finally happening, a new album". But she goes off to Nashville, does her new album (with old music), tours and than doesn't record with them because "records don't sell anymore". Wait... what?? Basically she said:"Fleetwood Mac records don't sell anymore but mine do".

And please, for the love of God, don't let them do Angel. She'll butcher it like she did with SOTM.

I don't think you've ever been to a Tom Petty show. Mike Campbell is jaw-droppingly amazing, and the shows will great, despite how we all feel about Lindsey leaving.

She was under contractual obligation to do that record, it was recorded very quickly, and it was a collection of old songs she found on YouTube. Stevie has nothing new to contribute anymore, as demonstrated by EP and 24KG, which is probably the real reason she avoided working with the band on a new album.

I agree. For example, for someone to say that they plan to leave bad show reviews (after saying over and over and over again that they will refuse to see a single concert with the latest line-up) is beyond childish and reflects a disturbing level of hysteria over just one more personnel change in a band that has been famous for it. This is not the end of anyone's world.

Stevie has nothing new to contribute anymore, as demonstrated by EP and 24KG, which is probably the real reason she avoided working with the band on a new album.

The contractual obligation was never really confirmed if I remember correctly. Yet it’s been accepted as a reason somehow by fans. “Where’s evidence? I wanna see that contract! Otherwise I’m not believing it!”

Sounds familiar?

Well I freely admit that I don't have the time or the energy to keep up with the huge volume of posts that have shown up each day since all this went down. (It also doesn't help that so many of them are completely devoid of substance or value, but that's another story.) So forgive me for needing to be caught up, but.....

you don't fire someone just because you don't like that person doing two tours instead of just one. There has to be something more.

Is there any insight into the "something more"? If Lindsey simply wanted intermingled tours, and the band said no, then it's his prerogative to either relent or quit. I'm not understanding why the band had to take any action after denying his request.

You're right, it should be that simple. It might have been in fact.

except persistent rumors from insiders who had proved trustworthy in the past and others have said that it became a p*ssing contest of some sort between stevie and lindsey. The specifics are a bit vague.

There's a suggestion that Lindsey may have told the band that they should hold off touring altogether until he could do what he wanted with his solo album/tour and then in 2 years FM could tour. This seems contradicted by video of Lindsey actually telling people he wanted to do the combined tour thing, release a best-of while touring, then release his new solo album after the Mac tour. Maybe he said it in jest... maybe he had some more detailed suggestion

Presumably in the course of that convo, re: waiting 2 years, Stevie said something along the lines of, 'hey, I'm not getting any younger, so you can tour with ME onboard NOW, or you can wait two years for Lindsey and tour with him at that time coz I won't be available then"

Mick checked with promoters who said they'd rather have Stevie/Mac now than Lindsey/Mac later.

Somewhere in there Stevie called Mike Campbell, and depending on who is talking something like either the band called Lindsey's bluff and he got mad and ended up walking out, or, the more persistent rumors are that he was "fired" and somehow the band said we've already replaced you so we are unilaterally ending negotiations. But who knows.

Christine confirmed in the interviews when promoting Buckingham McVie that everyone had already signed off for the FM tour. So even if Lindsey had bizarrely suggested they wait 2 years-- which I really, REALLY doubt he would do because 1. He had already signed off 2. He's not that stupid to ask for TWO WHOLE YEARS 3. It makes zero sense 4. His album was probably already mostly finished since he had planned on releasing it this year-- he would know that he contractually would not be allowed to do that. I believe Ken's 'source' was probably misinformed or that the band is going to try to spin that angle.

Maybe he did try asking for a delay later in the year, but he's not dumb enough to think he could ask them to wait 2 whole years to tour and they would give it to him.
The video of Lindsey himself basically confirms what all other 'sources' previously said about him wanting to do solo things in between FM.

I think this happened. After him putting his foot down and them putting their foot down, things got ugly. I can imagine there were probably a lot of fights and ugly words thrown at each other (which was not helped by the already existing tensions over the BuckVie album), which caused Stevie to (if true) make that 'him or me' ultimatum that brought about the firing.

Obviously this is all speculation on my part, but based off all the little pieces we've gotten about what happened, I wholeheartedly believe that something along these lines happened.

I don’t have it, I just remember her talking about the album needing to be done quickly because she owned the label an album and rehearsals were in six weeks, or something like that. I don’t have the time, energy, or inclination to dig through Stevie Nicks interviews.

Look. We get it. You’re not happy about what happened to Lindsey. But life’s too short. It’s just a band, and one that has had many lineups. Hardly worth trying to dictate where people can talk about the band or challenging anything anyone says that could be construed as remotely positive or supportive about the others.

And, I know you know I’m not thrilled with how it played out, but it is what it is, and it could be worse.

You must admit some of your posts about Stevie being hideous and farting rainbows and glitter etc etc, and the awful people that support her, do get a little repetitive, which is why I mentioned a broken record....

I am not blindly supporting Stevie in this whole debacle. I was just trying to point out that we don't know exactly what happened, or exactly what Lindsey did that resulted in him needing to be fired. Maybe they're all pissed off about having to fire him, including Stevie. Who knows?!? There are many alternative ways of thinking about this, and many possibilities about what actually happened.

Maybe they're trying to make the best of a really difficult, impossible situation.

You could remove Stevie Nicks and add Pat Benatar and Fleetwood Mac would be more interesting. The premise of the article is correct. The removal of Buckingham and addition of 2 new people does make it interesting. It just does not make it Fleetwood Mac IMHO. When Fleetwood Mac continued without Christine, it was interesting for a brief moment but the band lost its soul. IMHO it was not Fleetwood Mac.
The article drools over Finn as the most creative artist in the world. Well he is not being hired to be creative. The Mac is not recording an album. He is hired to fit the suit and play guitar and sing on a concert tour. If the Mac had 10 more years and 2 more studio albums to make, then it could be interesting. But sadly everyone knows this is the last tour and last breath of Fleetwood Mac.
Now to the wrong parts of the article. The author mocks Lindsey's singing that he no longer can sing. WTF? Lindsey has kept his singing voice which is something you cant say of Stevie and Christine. The author is really grasping at straws for that one. The author is excited that Crowded House songs and Heartbreaker songs will be played. The funny part was the author stating Finn could sing them better than Petty. WTF? If you want to hear Crowded House music, would you not rather attend a Crowded House concert? So Mac fans now must embrace Crowded House music because Finn plays guitar in Fleetwood Mac?
Now if you really wanted to make Fleetwood Mac more interesting, why not replace Mick with Don Henley. Then Stevie can sing leather and lace with him. A few Eagles songs could be played too. Stevie can hire Brad Jeffries to dance during Stand Back. They also could do a giant balloon drop during Don't Stop. All these things would make Fleetwood Mac more interesting. Replacing Keith Richards with Angus Young would make the Rolling Stones so much more interesting. Some of us don't want Fleetwood Mac more interesting.
Many of you can guzzle down the New Coke but many of us are sticking to the Classic.

What arrant nonsense. Campbell and Finn play better with Nicks and McVie? Has the writer heard Desert Angel? Freedom? THAT is what this tour will sound like.

And it is not a matter of sheer talent. I just found out recently that Rick Vito played the guitar solo on Bob Seger's Like a Rock. Hardly a nonentity. The reason the Vito/Burnette lineup was not successful is because they were not able to reproduce the current "house" Fleetwood Mac style which was established by Buckingham. Does anybody seriously think they are going to turn back into a blues band by unearthing some Peter Green songs?

And I will bet Neil Finn's tenure with the band will not be long.

Actually from a technical point of view Lindsey's singing is the worst of the three singers. He's never learned technical singing and often resorted to shouting since back in the day, and this is something that damaged and surely still is continuing to damage his voice greatly.
Of course this doesn't mean that he can't sing, you can produce very amazing sounds even without knowing how to sing technically, I'm thinking for example about Lana del Rey (at least when she first started), but of course to great detriment.

My point was not Lindsey is a fantastic singer but that his singing voice has held up. The author seemed to imply that Lindsey's singing is not what it used to be. Huh? Stevie lost her rasp and range and is flat. Christine loses her voice mid song and has a frog in her throat at times. Lindsey is consistent. If you play a concert of his last year his voice is almost identical as 1982. The others cannot say that which is why I thought it was odd the writer of the article brought it up.

And that bit about Lindsey's "extended bouts of self-indulgence?" WTFH? The only song arguably that Lindsey has too long a guitar solo is I'm So Afraid--and some would argue it is necessary for that particular song. Everything else is pitched and timed exactly right. Lindsey is special precisely because he almost never indulges in a pointless guitar solo when the song does not demand it. Name ANY song on the White Album, Rumours, Mirage, or Tango in which Lindsey goes on an musically unnecessary "bout of self-indulgence." One could in fact argue that some of the songs on those albums would benefit from a little more self-indulgent guitar work to enliven them.

It is clear that the writer of that piece is an ignoramus who knows nothing about Lindsey's or Fleetwood Mac's work.

I understand, but it depends on what you mean with "has held up". His voice has been damaged very much, maybe you notice it less because live he's always used an unhealthy technique but with time he's become noticeably hoarser and had to resort increasingly to shouting as well as started having less endurance (even if he at times counterbalanced it with the use of backing singers and prerecorded vocals).
What maybe has held up is his timbre, but that has more to do with his health conditions and his gender I fear, men don't go through the same hormonal changes that women do in their maturity.

Fleetwood Mac Drags Lindsey Buckingham After Ousting in Unfiltered Interview
By Viral Global News - April 25, 201806

Lindsey Buckingham

Fleetwood Mac seems pretty unbothered about letting Lindsey Buckingham go his own way.

Earlier this month, the band announced it would tour without the veteran guitarist and part-vocalist and replace him with Mike Campbell of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers and Neil Finn of Crowded House. Rolling Stone reported at the time that Fleetwood Mac had let Buckingham go after a disagreement over the tour.

“Words like ‘fired’ are ugly references as far as I’m concerned,” drummer and co-founder Mick Fleetwood told the magazine in comments posted on Wednesday, the band’s first remarks about Buckingham since their shocking announcement. “Not to hedge around, but we arrived at the impasse of hitting a brick wall. This was not a happy situation for us in terms of the logistics of a functioning band. To that purpose, we made a decision that we could not go on with him. Majority rules in term of what we need to do as a band and go forward.”

Fleetwood also called Buckingham’s ousting business as usual, the outlet said.

Buckingham did not respond to Rolling Stone‘s multiple requests for comment.

Buckingham joined Fleetwood Mac with then-girlfriend and singer-songwriter Stevie Nicks in 1974. He left the group in 1987 and rejoined the band a decade later.

“Our relationship has always been volatile,” she told Rolling Stone about the musician. “We were never married, but we might as well have been. Some couples get divorced after 40 years. They break their kids’ hearts and destroy everyone around them because it’s just hard. This is sad for me, but I want the next 10 years of my life to be really fun and happy. I want to get up every day and dance around my apartment and smile and say, ‘Thank God for this amazing life.'”

She told Rolling Stone that their upcoming tour will feature songs from the entire history of Fleetwood Mac, not just the original Buckingham-Nicks run from 1975 to 1987.

“We were never able to do that since 1975 because certain people in the band weren’t interested in doing that,” she said.

Fleetwood Mac announces tour, dishes on Lindsey Buckingham's departure

Fleetwood Mac — including Stevie Nicks, left, John McVie, Christine McVie, Lindsey Buckingham and Mick Fleetwood — earlier this year.

They’re here — but will they be better than before?

Fleetwood Mac on Wednesday announced a North American tour starting in October in Oklahoma and continuing through more than 50 cities in the U.S. and Canada until April 2019.

Yes, there are dates in the Los Angeles area, including two stops at the Forum on Dec. 11 and 13.

No, Lindsey Buckingham won’t be on this tour.

Veterans Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Stevie Nicks and Christine McVie will hit the road along with newcomers Mike Campbell and Neil Finn, who were added after the dismissal of Buckingham, who joined the group along with Nicks in 1974.

“We jammed with Mike and Neil and the chemistry really worked and let the band realize that this is the right combination to go forward with in Fleetwood Mac style,” founding member Fleetwood said on the band’s website. “We know we have something new, yet it’s got the unmistakable Mac sound.”

Campbell is Tom Petty’s former lead guitarist, while Finn is the frontman for Crowded House. Buckingham was let go earlier this year in a disagreement about the tour shortly after the group played at the Recording Academy’s MusiCares Person of the Year event in January.

“It’s like a marriage that came to an end and there are reasons why, and as a band we needed to move on,” Fleetwood said Wednesday on “CBS This Morning.” When asked if Buckingham had been fired, the drummer replied, “We don't use that word, because I think it's ugly.”

Nicks explained that in a band, you have to work as a team.

"This team wanted to get out on the road, and one of the members did not want to go out on the road for a year," Nicks said. "We just couldn't agree."

But she explained it slightly differently to Rolling Stone.

“We were never married, but we might as well have been,” Nicks said. “Some couples get divorced after 40 years. They break their kids' hearts and destroy everyone around them because it’s just hard. This is sad for me, but I want the next 10 years of my life to be really fun and happy.”

Tickets go on sale on May 4, with select presale dates before then.

Also, a Fleetwood Mac channel featuring music, interviews and more from current and former members will run on SiriusXM during the month of May.

Your one example is one of the most covered rock songs ever, because most rock guitarists love playing that song, as proof that Lindsey didn’t mind doing older material, completely disregarding the fact that Lindsey’s said many times that he felt like he was part of a caberet act whenever he had to do Bob Welch or Danny Kirwan songs?

No, I'm using it as an example that no matter what Lindsey thought, he did it anyway, because he was told to do it, as with many pre Rumous songs, like Station Man and other Christine's songs.

So, to say now that "We were never able to do that since 1975 because certain people in the band weren’t interested in doing that", is a complete lie.

I don't doubt Lindsey would never have wanted to play songs that weren't his because he would've felt like a karaoke singer but the idea that this was some big deal and that Stevie felt sooooo strongly about the idea that they play Starion Man is complete bs. And I'm sure that when they do play those songs and see that 90% of the people there have no clue about those songs and will use them as their bathroom break, they'll be dropped.

The band will be better live

No they wont. Lindsey was the live act. He gave them the energy.
I really like Neil Finn but neither he nor Mike Campbell are the most animated of performers. The new set may be interesting but completely lacking in excitement.

more stage time for Stevie?? No annoying guitar player to compete for attention or storytelling time.

I keep remembering how she arranged (her team) to have a Rolling Stone cover story about HERSELF during the midst of a Mac tour last time.

Sister worries about herself and no one else.

Don't be so harsh on Stevie! We all love her!!!!:lol::lol:

She's a terrible liar, but hey, as long as she's happy....

right??

I'm thinking Mike Campbell digs the tune and has asked to play it with them. That's probably the only reason she's mentioned it.

Oh I'm not so sure. He's coming in in the weaker position-- she's the queen bee, she's had far, far more success than him, she's VERY aware of her sales figures, her name recognition, her pull with the media.... I mean Lindsey had a higher profile than Neill and she couldn't care less when it came to going against him on things. Nor Mick for that matter. She won't tolerate it, and he won't push too hard before he's put in his place. I'll wager on it

Yup! Neither Mike nor Neil will have their way over Stevie’s. Not sure there is much to fight about now though except the set list and I don’t think Stevie really cares what they play as long as she can take a break during those songs. However, I don’t see this lineup lasting after this tour.

wasn't she saying after the last tour or somewhere thereabouts how she was looking forward to spending time in her fancy trailer up in Malibu, taking it easy, and getting to be home like she's never been able to be all these years??

Over the summer last year I was stuck on a long car ride so I listened to a bunch of Stevie radio interviews from the post-Tango, pre-Dance years when she was zonked out on klonopin and basically said anything with no filter and a few times she talked about Lindsey and she was sooooooo bitter. Whereas immediately following him leaving, she was basically relieved that he was gone because it was a break from their stressful dynamic, a few years afterwards she was just really, really bitter. There was a call in part of one of the interviews and the guy calling asked her something along the lines of "whatever happened to Lindsey Buckingham, do you still talk to him" and she said in this depressed voice that they don't talk, she wishes she did still talk to him, he doesn't talk to her and she hopes maybe one day they'll talk. And the radio host really awkwardly commented like "call her Lindsey!". And there are tons of other interviews where she says the same thing, how she was so so heartbroken this is how their relationship would end (and obviously blames it all on him not talking to her).

And things like this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9y5yWJ3K4OM
"I hope maybe someday he'll find it in his heart to spend some time with me again".

Basically, I think Stevie is going to regret this in a couple of years. It's not like she and Lindsey are friends/have a relationship outside of work. Her only connection to him was Fleetwood Mac and in spite of their difficult relationship, he was really like big catalyst of her life and I think she's going to regret letting it all end like this.

I agree with you. At some point (and given their advanced ages, it isn't that far into the future), she will regret that this happened. In some ways I see Lindsey being able to move on a lot better than she will (he did after leaving in '87). She seemingly obsesses over their relationship to this day. It is the defining thing in her life. If God forbid anything ever happened to him, she would be all over the place making it all about her and expressing regret at how their relationship (in general not the actual relationship that ended 40+ years ago) ended.

Yup! She said that herself before, that it was "pivotal" in her life. And it's honestly true, it's not even a shipper-y thing. It's just the truth. Stevie's life is devoted to her music and her 'Stevie Nicks' thing. She has said she chose that over her personal life/having a family and I think there's nothing wrong with that. So when Stevie looks back at her life and thinks about what other person had the biggest impact on her life, she's gonna point to the guy who was the start of her career and who fueled her fire (in good AND bad ways) for decades.

The longer I sit with this devastating news, the more I am inclined to say that this may have been a mutual agreement. Yes, I'm sure tensions were running high. Mick needed money, Stevie didn't want to sit home for a year. After Lindsey didn't "sign on the dotted line" and give in to pressure, he told them to go ahead. They called his bluff and decided to do just that.

They called Mike Campbell and Billy Burnett. Burnett didn't work out in the rehearsals (something was missing), so Mick called his friend Neil Finn.

Though everyone is pissed off, this will give Lindsey time to do his solo small machine thing. He can also enjoy time with his family.

We will see a MASSIVE FAREWELL TOUR in late 2020 going into 2021 with Lindsey "miraculously" returning to the fold. News of the iconic lineup Rumours reuniting will send the farewell tour ticket sales THROUGH THE ROOF. The tour will span the better part of two years, hitting all major markets twice. Don't expect new music, though. I'm just sorry that the Fleetwood Mac brand had to be watered down this way. It's a cheap shot, but what else could we expect?

Oh, Billy Burnett was there alright. Moreover, he was considered for the spot. Mike Campbell was written in stone due to his close involvement with Stevie, but the band needed a vocalist.

This fiasco all went down right after MusicCares. I'm surprised it was able to be kept secret as long as it was.

Billy's health issues have come in recent weeks-long after Fleetwood Mac had already selected Finn. I suppose, in hindsight, it was good that Billy did not get the job. His health conditions wouldn't have withstood the strain.

Billy Burnett wasn't offered a spot to come back. He had a rant about this on Twitter, he's actually the one that broke the news something was wrong. But then he took his tweet down. It said something to the words of "Lindsey's out but I sure as hell am not back in" but then it was gone....

You're right, he was not offered the spot. My assessment said that he was "considered" and auditioned/jammed with the band in the days before Neil Finn was called in. After realizing that the Burnett chemistry was not good, the band went back to brainstorming and came up with Neil Finn.

This is the sound he’ll bring to Fleetwood Mac.
