"Cheaper Than Free" was a last minute entry whereby Stevie wrote the lyrics to a tune Dave had previously written. This was always intended for Dave's album and was not part of Stevie's until recently.
I can't be bothered referencing all the earlier threads regarding this album's creation but surely someone can verify this? It's no big deal but it was my recollection that between them, Stevie and Dave had prepared 14 songs specifically for her album that did not include "Cheaper Than Free".

ohhhhhhhmygosh! looking at all of these posts, and listening to the new version of Secret Love and looking at those gorgeous new pictures of Stevie makes me soooo ****ing excited!! excuse the use of explicatives but it's true..my fandom is coming back on as strong as it was before! :]

Thanks for the warning about the "instant" download. I am sooo going to wait.

But I do love hearing the clip with Dave Stewie's cool, crisp synths under Stevie's voice. It's really a great match and updates her sound without changing it. This could be really, really good!

So I just have the radio edit version of this song. (The one that's on youtube and ends abruptly at 3:15) - I haven't pre ordered the album yet and gotten the free download. Thinking about doing that today. So if I do, does that mean the free download that they send me will be the FULL version of the song? I heard it's got another minute of music/vocals. If this is true, I will order, but if it's the radio edit that I already have, then I won't. I'll just wait for the album to come out.

Can anyone who has already pre-ordered clear up the mystery? Is it full version or edited version that is sent?

I pre-ordered and had zero problems. Download was available immediately. It is the full version, as far as I can tell.

And while I'm here, I'll chime in to say that I don't love it, but I love Stevie. So, it will surely grow on me over time. I am really thrilled about all this new stuff. I think I am most excited about the "movie" than anything else.

The free download of SL is the 3:15 radio/single edit. Oddly enough, it's the same length as the original demo - i do hope there is a longer version on the album. It really is ridiculous that the full version of Planets was not on TISL. On my PC, I have a playlist with the full version of Planets on it and it works so well.

Well i just thought about this. Should Warner/Reprise market her right... This album is bound to sell really well. Just think about it.. Not only will they inevitably touch a newer audience (no telling how much) but Stevie is not only a solo artist but also the poster child of Fleetwood Mac . So not only will she have the following of all of us respectively but also from the older generation of those who adore her from Fleetwood Mac. Couple that with youtube and the internet to real in new fans as well as older fans who aren't computer savvy enough to "steal" the music online and she may actually be happy w/ record sales. Hope her label can actually do there part for once!

So the mediafire link and the free WB download are both the 3 min single edit. So this is what everyone got. Nobody (except FM77) has heard the full version yet.

:] Nail on head! I love TISL but I have a feeling it'll be left in the dust by this record, at least vocally.

my copy is moth eaten and hasn't seen seen the light of day since 2001
the only songs that get played on my ipod are Space Needle, My Heart, Have No Heart & Love Is ...

so i say BRING IT!!!!!!!!!!!

True - but we don't know how long this original poem/song was even if it wasn't in the original demo. Dave's influence may have been to tell her to add something or to look at what she had written before and say use that or she could have told him she couldn't figure out where to place it. I'm sure he did advise with structuring, etc.

The thing that bothers me most about the song is this:

But you need some rest
My darling, it's best
"But we've already passed it," I cried
Ooh, wee, listen to me
My secret love secretly dies

******
Passed what? A test? Well, it seems obvious that word is missing throughout the whole song. Also, would it have made more sense to say something like:

But, you say "This test
My darling is best"
"But, we've already passed it. I've tried."
"Ooh wee listen to me", my secret love secretly cried

Eh. It's Stevie, I'll get over it. I still think it sounds great. :)

i dont understand this song at all :o
like my initial understanding of it was
her love for this person is NOT a secret anymore coz this person was a friend and now they're MORE
but she's so sad at the end of this song
and that secret love DIED
so she had love for this person and it eventuated into nothing
and their last convo cemented it would never be anything hence it DIED
but what test did they pass
why is is she saying come upstairs if they're not already together?
assuming they're in HER house??????

Am I the only one absolutely floored by this? :distress: Poor girl must have been really stuck for something to write about...

 im sad about this only coz Twilight is so pathetic
she couldnt have gotten inspiration from Harry Potter?
i mean hullo it's all wizards and witches, surely she's watched it
but i think she must like twilight for the romantic saga
maybe she identifies with it

i dont care what/how B&TB inspired her
the song came out BEAUTIFULLY
and it is probably one of my fave songs to see her do live

I think the idea of the song is that she's got a sort of crush on this dude. She's asking him to come upstairs and go to bed with her but he refuses. He's obviously got a broken heart, perhaps from their past relationship, perhaps from another woman. And she realizes that he can't love her. She saying that she doesn't need a full on relationship with him, just a little time to be together. And as she is saying this she realizes they will never be together. So now she's just trying to get him to go to bed, even if it's just to sleep. She just can't bare to leave him alone when he's crying.

I really don't care if Secret Love flops. What matters to me is that I like it. After 7 years of disappointment, I am a very happy ledgie right now!

Secret Love is great!

P.S. The "oooo we" is my favorite part.

Bob Dylan has used a few "ooowees" in his lyrics. So if it's good for Bob it's good for Stevie!!:)

It's a secret love because nobody knows about it, or at least not many people do. They are at the end of their love relationship. The "test"' is the possibility of it working. Not gonna happen, they both know it. IT"S OVER! He's crying and she doesn't want to leave him alone downstairs. She wants to console him and ease the pain and stay with him. She never asked him to come upstairs? Stevie wants to continue the relationship as friends but not as lovers. It's about old wooden balls I think!

^ Yes and when she asks him to come upstairs, I'm sure it's to a bed that they shared as lovers. Now, she's just asking him to come up so that they can hold and comfort each other as friends. That makes it all the more poignant that what was passion is now platonic.

The come upstairs line sounds sexy at first, but then you see it's not that kind of offer and that we're at the end of something, not at the proposition stage.

isnt it obvious...what shes talking about.
its not about a relationship. it never happened.
how could it, if her secret love secretly died?

she has a secret love, and has obviously hinted about it...but he didnt respond.
she never told him she loved him...hence the title 'secret love'

so, if it cant be love...then she just wants sex.
and still be friends.

so...if he's 'down here in tears'
he knows how she feels. and doesnt want to risk losing the friendship just for sex...
because he know she loves him...but he doesnt love her.

I don't think this is a song about Stevie just wanting sex. I think this is Stevie embracing the fact that some love stories are short stories, but love stories all the same. I assume it is about Mick and I think over time she developed this secret love for him and she felt very much in love with him. I think then at some point they had sex and this is where this song came from. I think after having sex, she wanted more. She wanted a relationship. She wanted love. And Mick probably told her they couldn't have a relationship because it wouldn't work. He was married, Lindsey may get jealous, it may tear Fleetwood Mac apart, and so on. Therefore, they couldn't be anything more than friends. "But we've already passed it" she cries... she tells him they have already passed the point of being more than friends, so why not embark on this relationship? Why not enjoy this love? She knows it won't work out in the end, but she isn't asking forever from him, she's just asking to be held for a while.

Secret Love could mean affair that no one knows is going on or it could mean it started out as sexual liason and she fell in and out love and he doesn't know it. Whatever the case, he was too much work and it's over.

I think Secret Love is about Stevie and Lindsey having relationship issues while they were supporting/recording Buckingham Nicks. We know that they were having some problems before they joined FM in 75. When I listen to this song I think about the frustrated Lindsey trying to make their music work while Stevie works to keep them alive. Certainly these problems only made their relationship more difficult to survive. They just needed some rest. ;)

Yeah, I don't love it, but I really, really like it. And I'm not getting sick of it. I think the song gets better with time. Everyday and Say You Will, sorta made me go "That's nice" and move on. But this songs lyrics, make a deeper impression and I just think this is good, solid offering. It also sounds really good when bumped up against other songs. The dreamy quality of the song is hard to blow off, too. It's dramatic in all the right places, but that dreamy takes you in a different direction. The lyrics are excellent.

P.S. I only really got into Talk to Me after it was played on the radio a hundred times. That song didn't sound like a Stevie Nicks song, but it sounded good on the radio.

Can someone please post an mp3 of the demo? Thanks.

- I've been listening to the song all day and I don't like it as much as I did at first, especially since someone said it was comparable to Every Day.

- Can you guys hear a Little Bella Donna in it? I was singing "You can ride high atop your pony..." and it almost fits.

-Another reason I don't like it as much is because it occurred to me (DUH) she could have chosen so many other demos that I would have preferred over this one and now it's taken another one's spot that I may have loved. Does that make sense?

You know, I downloaded the single, and from the abrupt start and ending...I have a feeling this album is going to be continuous...kind of like Madonna's "Confessions on a dance floor"........

The way the song just creciendo's at the end makes my curiosity go...."Ooooh...what song must be next, the song right after this...?"

I was listening to "Secret Love" and "If Anyone Falls" back to back.......and her voice sounds like it did back then. She has really done a great job of singing in her best range.....not that low range like Street Angel or Say You Will.....

The emotion of this song and the way her voice sounds on it.... made my eyes water a little....and I thought to myself... "Yes, this is that pretty girl singing from Fleetwood Mac." It took my right back to her 70-80's energy. She sounds better than ever. I didn't think she could top TISL........but, from what I have heard so far..... I think Stevie has just put together a very special treat/gift for her fans, and for her new fans. I think the younger fans will finally get to hear how deep in emotion her lyrics can be. I hope they really connect to the words and feel...what she must have been feeling back then...

So one final question: "Secret Love......Is it about Mick, or is it about Lindsey?" I think....it might just be about Mick Fleetwood....

I think the song was written before she knew Mick Fleetwood.

Sometimes, when we're doing all this speculating, I think she may have been writing about other people - a friend, something she's overheard or even an exaggeration of an experience. So, we try to fit every single line into what we know about her life when she's created a song that at its heart is either someone else's story or an event we have no knowledge of whatsoever.

It's funny... I did the exact same thing. I played Secret Love back to back with several of her earlier songs, and she does indeed sound very much like she did in the '80s. To me, she sounds kinda like a hybrid of the Rock A Little and Other Side Of The Mirror albums. I always knew Stevie still had it in her to sing at this higher, more delicate register vs the the deeper scream/belt she developed around the time of the Dance.

I think it's a poignant song and I think it's about Mick.

He's said in his book that they were off and on for more than a year, and I think this is about knowing they had no future together because it would blow FM apart. And if that seems daft sometimes -- how many of us would give up 'serious' love for 'a job'? -- remember that FM meant more to those two than it did to any of the others, and for different reasons.

If you've ever been in a situation where you're trying to stop relapsing into ex-sex, it makes sense I think.

As jwd said:
"Heavy, heavy night with lots of soul searching. That's how I'm hearing it anyway."

Or as Jerry Seinfeld said, "Breaking up with someone is like trying to knock over a coke machine. You can't do it in one go, you've got to rock it back and forth a little."

She wrote the song before she knew Mick. If what I've read is correct and she wrote the song around the time she and Lindsey joined Fleetwood Mac - assuming the song is about a true experience she had and not someone else's, then it's possible this song is about the guy she almost left Lindsey for in the BN days.

So much for my theory then! Excellent!

Is the guy you mention the same guy that she said 'Enchanted' and 'Destiny' were about? The one who 'wanted [her] but didn't try'? Are these songs all from around the same time, pre-FM?

The production on this song sounds more Glen Ballard than Dave Stewart to me. I definitely hear the Wilson Phillips vibe others have pointed out esp. in the vocal production on the girls, the held notes, and chorus. There is a dash of Alanis thrown in there as well as a dash of classic 80's Stevie. Really wish this song were longer. Other than the small music interlude in the middle of the second verse there is really no guitar solo or major interlude. My main criticism of the song is I wish Stevie had fleshed out the chorus to have a little more bite and be a bit longer. This is a good song, better than Everyday or Say You Will, and the vocal is the better than I could have imagined. But this isn't the knock outta the park that they really needed for the 1st single. I am confident there are better songs on the record. Even David Wild said this is his 6th Fav song from "In Your Dreams". Time shall tell...

I agree...another minute of this Secret Love would not be too much! This song has been lodged in my brain the entire day today! It's becoming borderline annoying  Not only do I love the lighthearted vibe of this song but I think the vocal is pretty darn good as is the production. There's a lot to like in these 3 minutes

How do we know when "Secret Love" was actually written?

The song first appeared on the bootleg album Almanac, which was mostly Stevie demos with a few live Fleetwood Mac performances (of Stevie songs) in 1975. The songs seem clearly divided into two different eras, based on instrumentation mainly, and also Stevie's vocals.

The first batch of songs can be put into the late Buckingham Nicks era, all being guitar based:
Cathouse Blues
Garbo
Goldfish & Ladybug
That's Alright
Sorcerer
Candlebright
Without You

The second batch of songs are all more keyboard based, with that Tusk-y vibe to some:
Storms
Secret Love
Watch Chain

Almanac was released in Late 1978, the same year as Stevie's affair with Mick, so why can't it be about him? Just wondering. The music on that "Secret Love" demo sounds closer to 1978.

Has Stevie given interviews about when it was written?

I think there is another minute ..if you notice the song cuts off just at it is building again ..not the way a song usually ends.

Ummm whether or not you consider this a real song or not, this is probably the best release she has had since Talk to Me. This song already belongs on her Best of CD. If this is just a middle of road single from the album, the album really could rival Bella Donna.

The song is suspicious. No one has ever mentioned the song as being the best on the album, or one of the stand out tracks. They also said this is the first single, not the lead single. Yeah, it may be on itunes Feb 3rd, but that doesn't mean it's going to be released to all the radio stations. It could be just released to A/C. With songs like In Your Dreams released everywhere. I think it's just a primer single, but if it's not, I'm very satisfied with it. Like I said, it's the best release she's had in ages.

Is the guy you mention the same guy that she said 'Enchanted' and 'Destiny' were about? The one who 'wanted [her] but didn't try'? Are these songs all from around the same time, pre-FM?

Honestly, I don't know if Stevie herself has said when the song was written. I was going by a post I read on another board by a long time fan who I'm sure you all know. Since he's been a fan longer than me (like forever and a day), I was assuming he had his facts straight. He said that the song was written around the time she and Lindsey joined Fleetwood Mac.

That I know of, no time frame is confirmed except for the excellent details you posted on the demo boot. Thanks for sharing.

However, let's keep in mind songs may have been written years prior to the recording of demos or obtaining of copyrights. I have hundreds songs, partial songs, song ideas and poems that I have written over the past 30 years and I have never copyrighted any of them. I would think that Stevie, who we've been told wrote constantly, would have a plethora of material to pick through at any given time. So, the date of a copyright or a demo may not help us connect any dots when trying to determine who a particular song ("Secret Love" in this case) was written about. Just sayin'.... back to the party. :woohoo:

By the way, I've decided this is one song I don't really care who it's about. I just really dig it.

Good food for thought. However, Stevie has also said she records and copyrights her stuff in rough demo form very quickly to protect herself from claims of plagiarism.

And that famous Longtimer's opinions certainly hold weight, although I wonder if he wasn't just lumping "Secret Love" in with "Cathouse Blues", "Without You" and the others on Almanac. The music on that demo is a much later Stevie than on "Garbo" and the rest, more akin to "Storms" to my ears. Those keyboards and drum machine/metronome/whatever aren't on Stevie's earlier demos.

I'm sure David knows all about that keyboard, right?! :)

Anyway, I just like being a detective, looking at all the possibilities.

Totally agree. We might can narrow it down! Oh, but as far as her copyrighting stuff - yeah after FM I'm sure...but probably not before. If we checked a lot of the BN songs that we know were written in the early '70's for instance, we would probably find later copyright dates...

See, I like the single and I'm really happy, but it doesn't add up. WB has not taken the song down from any of the sites and there is still 4.5 months before the album drops. It seems like they are using the song as a preorder and to generate buzz. They know people are going to find ways of getting the single without paying for it. It feels like they are just giving people a taste of what is to come. It doesn't feel right.

And David Wilde, the rolling stone rock critic, said it was only his 6th favorite song on the album. The song itself has not been mentioned by anyone in the know as their favorite.

It was FM77 who said he'd heard the entire album and mentioned that "Secret Love" has one more minute of music and vocals. I can't remember who it was who said that the free download with pre-order was also the full version, but this proved not to be true.

I've started limiting myself to listening to this song only once a day. Pretty soon, I'll limit it to even less. We still have 3 & 1/2 months to go before the whole album is released and I really don't want to grow sick of the song before then, or at least make it stale to where I'll skip over it when I do buy the album. Luckily, if it IS a minute longer, we will have that to enjoy about it when the record is released. Kind of like it's a new song again.

Whoaaa buddy, More like 3.5 months, I know, I know probably a typo, but still don't give us another reason to k'vetch;) But it's still worth noting this is the longest lead time that Stevie or her record co. has ever release a promo/single song ever. Many artists in the digital single oriented download era, release many songs trying to see which one sticks and grabs an audience. I suspect this is the case for "Secret Love" and if it does not generate much heat you can count that another one will be released @March, closer to the album release. Remember "Everyday" and then "POTU" were not released until @mid march before TISL release on May 1st. And I suspect David Wild was being more than generous when he tweeted that Secret Love was his 6th favorite song on the album **nudge nudge wink wink**.

Why do you care so much about sales?

Every fan, and artist should be consumed with sales figures. I know it's shallow, and materialistic - but for a majority of recording artists a lack of sales equals a lack of promotion and funding for future work.

Contrary to public perceptions, the majority of singer/songwriters are not living in the lap of luxury. Madonna? Yes. Tori Amos? Yes. They sell so many albums they don't have to care if one or more isn't as successful.

The whole reason Stevie resisted making another album after TISL was because of sales - she worried no one would buy it, and she's right to be concerned, especially if she intends to record and release another one.

Unless she intends to self-fund her recording career, which I sincerely doubt, the quantity of units sold should be of relatively high importance if you care about the release of future material.

Slightly related...

My roommate never buys music - when I refused to copy my Regina Spektor albums for him, he was appalled that I suggested he buy them. "Are you serious?" he asked me. He's 27 years old and has NEVER paid for music. He copies CDs from friends, and thinks it's laughable that this would be considered stealing, and I gave up trying to explain it a long time ago. In his mind, music is public domain and only suckers pay for it. He is part of the problem the music industry is having, and there are tens of millions of people who think and behave just like him.

Key word in my post: so much

Obviously I care about Stevie's sales because she cares about them. Even Stevie knows that she is not putting out another Bella Donna. At most she will go Gold and recieve critical acclaim. For me, it is just about enjoying the music....and I am.

I would gauge after reading through this entire thread, that the majority of Ledgeheads like it, if not love it. I think the response so far is good, considering the disparity of opinions around here, and considering that promo/singles are rarely our favorite tracks. Judging the production and singing on this track alone, I think we're in for a FANTASTIC album & I'll predict it will be better than TISL. I do suspect "Secret Love" is more Ballard than Stewart, if not co-produced by both in the end. My biggest problem with the song, besides it being too short, is that it is too catchy for my ears...I can't get it out of my head...and thats not necessarily a bad thing... yet . So I've just stopped playing it, so I don't tire and bore of it. As far as sales...I'd like it to do well enough in this current music climate and reach Top 10 album status, but don't expect TISL #'s. I would be more content with mass critical attention and praise across the board at this point. Maybe it will be a slow burner....

When I look back at both TISL and Stevie's SYW contributions now that the excitement and years have passed. It's occurred to me that I listen to TISL far more frequently as a whole than Stevie's SYW songs. I commend SYW in that it showcases far and away the most Stevie diversity of any FM record (but the same could be said of Lindsey's songs). But her vocals were not recorded in the most flattering way & the production only embellishes this fact. This is probably the reason I don't listen to many of her great SYW songs.

I've started to develop the conclusion that Stevie's modern voice needs grand production and atmosphere (if done properly) to carry off her artistic vision for today's music connoisseurs. TISL simply put,has more atmosphere than SYW.:xoxo: If Stevie still had her Bella Donna-Wild Heart voice, I would say YES... She need to be recording with T-Bone Burnett or Rick Rubin and strip things down. But that Stevie is long gone.

Is it the best single she has put out since... forever? No. I still think "Planets of the Universe" was a better single. But I don't think it deserved the harsh criticism it received from some either. Some said it was too middle-of-the-road. It wasn't edgy enough. It sounds cold, sterile and passion-less. Well... there is some validity to all of that. But honestly what do you expect from Stevie Nicks in 2011? Another "Edge of Seventeen?" Simply put, nobody makes music like that anymore, not even Stevie Nicks. It seems that she simply cannot win. If she does something retro in the vein of Bella Donna, people will lambast her as being a dinosaur who failed to evolve. If she does something very modern, then people will accuse her of trying to be trendy or they will say that she should do something like Bella Donna. Damned if you do; damned if you don't. My only criticism with "Secret Love" is the fact that it is a vault song written 35 years ago; I really wanted to hear something brand-spanking new. Otherwise, I really do love what Dave, Glen, et al. have done with it. The melody is unchanged, but the newly-added musical hook- that slowly cascading four-note riff - is totally brilliant. I also love the occasional oddball quirks thrown into the mix. It's definitely not a by-the-books Stevie song, yet it harkens back to the best of her recorded output. It is modern, but captures a kind of old fashioned new agey vibe at the same time. If I'm looking for "cutting edge," then I will look in another direction.

And you're right... her voice sounds decades younger and infinitely more alive than it did on TISL. Most of her singing on TISL sounds like "I just don't give a damn" when compared by the passion we hear on Secret Love.

A lot of this might have...more than likely I mean... was achieved with common tools people have been using for years. Even back in the 1960's the Beach Boys were recording vocals at lower speeds and then playing them back at higher speeds to achieve a more "Youthful" sound for the vocals. One example of this is Rock and Roll Music.

Today vocalists can just sing a song and most everything can be tweaked post production. I am sure they used a combination of this on TISL, TSS and now this new album. You can hear some of the tweaks for sure on TSS and Secret Love.

Now, Stevie can still sing on key, and still can belt out a tune and when she WANTS to can sing some pretty notes and with feeling. But we are kidding ourselves if we think the sounds coming out of Secret Love are 100% un-retouched Stevie Nicks.

NOT that I am complaining. I will take 15% retouched Stevie Nicks vocals over the 100% retouched sounds of most of today's Pop music.

I agree... there's as much retouching on the vocal as there is on the new promo photo. Still, I'll take Cyber-Stevie any day over no Stevie at all.

[QUOTE=HejiraNYC;936539] But honestly what do you expect from Stevie Nicks in 2011? Another "Edge of Seventeen?" Simply put, nobody makes music like that anymore, not even Stevie Nicks.

I'd like to ask you to clarify this statement. Music like what?

The only thing I would say about that is that, as we saw in 'Destiny Rules', she does sometimes keep a weather eye on how what goes on record translates to live performance, which might inhibit the tendency to tweak, especially in respect of raising the key. Some tweaking, for sure, but I also think that Dave S. -- like S. Crow -- has succeeded in convincing SN that she can afford to reach a bit further, vocally.

I don't agree that the vocals are as tweaked as the photos. If that were the case, she'd be sounding like a smurf.

I also didn't like that the label had a glitch first day in the download and the pricing. I disrespect that Reprise overcharges on shipping, and pre-orders will not arrive until 5 days after the release

Why would you have a problem with the first day glitch if you weren't involved  The receipt says shipped on or before release date. Says nothing about 5 days arrival after the release.

Totally agree, although I think there are a few exceptions on TISL. I was actually disappointed more with her vocals on SYW. "Destiny Rules", "Ilume" and "Say You Will" especially. As far as her vocals on that album, I kept thinking, "Gee, Stevie, how low CAN you go?" Reminded me of Patty & Selma from the Simpsons.

"Secret Love" by Stevie Nicks
A glimpse of In Your Dreams,
La Gold Dust Woman's first new music in a decade is a glimpse of In Your Dreams, a collaboration with Eurythmics' synth-pop scientist Dave Stewart. (It's due in May.) "Come on, it's time to go upstairs" she begins over clipped Eighties drum thwaps and a witchy shroud of electronics, which give way to backward beats and a glassy guitar line. Her voice is strong and the come-on is inviting — at least until it evolves into something far more complicated. Romance is like that sometimes.

What about Goodbye Baby?

Hmmm...that one's tricky. It's okay I guess but I don't love it. Her vocals are also A LOT lower than normal on that one too. Also, I've been in love with the demo of it ("The Tower") for years and years before. It was always one of my all time favorite demos, so "Goodbye Baby"was kind of a letdown. I don't like the added "don't forget me, yes I was outspoken" part.

God Lord... It clearly says on the web-site that you DO NOT have to pay expedited shipping if you pre-order BEFORE April 26 in order to get it to ARRIVE ON OR BEFORE release date of May 3rd.

Paying NOW or in February or in March, and most of April, you get it at your house ON OR BEFORE May 3rd.

With tax in Texas, it was $17, and guaranteed TO ARRIVE ON OR BEFORE May 3rd.

I actually like the added words to Goodbye Baby but the vocal destroys the song for me. Like you feel, to me The Tower is a classic song. Great vocal, great music.

Louie -- I totally agree, that might well be MF's drumming, but for me the pure shame it that, like 80% of SYW, it just doesn't sound like it.

I sometimes think there are just too many knobs/nobs in the studio these days.

I'm satisfied with single, but some others are not. After hearing the song, I'm pretty sure I'm going to get the album I want. It's just that sales keep contracts and I hope her and Dave get together for another record soon. The Fleetwood Mac thing just takes way too long. And to be honest, although her songs on SYW were a step above TISL, I think her Dave have some real creative chemistry.

I think you're in the minority of those who feel her SYW songs were a step above her TISL songs. Personally, the only song I still enjoy listening to off SYW is Thrown Down. Her atrocious vocals ruin the majority of SYW (how can we ever forget the famous nasal snort in Destiny Rules?). Although her voice wasn't exactly stellar on TISL, good writing and good production carried it through. I honestly hated what Lindsey did with her SYW songs - Smile At You, Destiny Rules, Running Through The Garden could have turned out much better IMO with a different producer. :sorry:

My two cents. Personally I love “Secret Love.” I remember the demo from a long time ago but it has been years since I played it. Maybe that is why the 2011 “Secret Love” sounds new and refreshing to me; it was not a song that I played for years and years. Also, for it being an older song she has pulled out of the vault, I like how it came out much more than the newer versions of the old songs that ended up on TISL and SYW. I’m almost willing to say I like it better than anything on TISL, so it gives me hope I’m going to enjoy “In Your Dreams.”

I too was disappointed with Stevie’s performance on Ellen. David pretty much summed it up perfectly. I still believe Stevie has the ability to touch our “heart and soul”, as evident of the new single (I’ve been playing it over and over quite a bit) but needless to say, Stevie’s best touring days are behind her. I would rather her put out more new music, where she can still shine vocally (enhanced or not in the studio) then for her to constantly tour offering very little that is new. It’s not to say that one should put themselves out to pasture just because we reach a certain age, because it will happen to all of us, but it would be nice to see Stevie transition into doing something that is more suitable for the person she is today. I think Stevie shines on songs like “Circle Dance” and “Secret Love”, so I’d like to see her do something more stripped down. It’s a little painful to hear her strain on “If Anyone Falls” or to be out of breath on “Stand Back.”

I do love "Secret Love" though very much, I can't say that enough.

Rhiannon is the worst of that lot... it's so, so painful to hear these days. I too wish she'd simply refocus her career and delve more into becoming a very serious recording artist. She's got so much more to offer than poorly belted off key Stand Backs.

Here's Rolling Stone's review of "Secret Love"
http://www.rollingstone.com/music/songreviews/secret-love-20110118

Considering this is coming from Rolling Stone, and otherwise, I think this is a GOOD review. The only thing I perceive as possibly being negative is how the reviewer tries to date the song by linking it to the 80s/Bella Donna. Perhaps just to put the song in some kind of historical perspective. OR, given the fact that Stevie Nicks hasn't released an album of new material in 10 yrs., I wonder if her current writing capabilites/creativity are being questioned here somewhat?

Reading through the readers comments, one in particular struck me as being HIGHLY complimentary and promising, especially when it was made about an aging rock star like Stevie Nicks. Laura wrote, "I don't know who this woman is, but this stuff is awesome"

I think Stevie`s vocals sound fresh and good on the single and it bodes well for the sound of the album as a whole. I fully agree that her performances of some tunes live has been a bit ragged in recent years - if Anyone falls, Rhiannon, Stand Back... However, her performances of ballads has been marvellous - BATB, Beautiful Child, Love Is last August, Silver Springs on the Unleashed tour. I really think she needs to focus on songs like those more and get away from the shouting. As for SYW, she really owned a lot of the stuff there, so much more engaged than TISL. Illume and Running Through the Garden and Everybody Finds Out and Thrown Down and Goodbye Baby are her best in many years, IMO. Destiny Rules and Silver Girl, not so much, but they are still so Stevie-ish.

The thing about Destiny Rules, I thought it was totally well-written, and the music was awesome... Stevie just needed a more inspired vocal when she was recording it. I thought it worked really well on stage though, so I have no idea why they didn't play it more!

Rhiannon definitely isn't the exorcism it used to be, but I think vocally it still sounds good live. I do agree that Stand Back needs to be retired from and TV performances for the rest of her life. I think it bodes well in a live concert with all the energy and the audience and with such a high volume, people probably don't notice how bad the vocal is. But really, it is lifeless and she is out of breath. Especially when she doesn't twirl, which she never does on TV. Also, I never felt like Stand Back really transitioned well into a live song. The studio version kicks ass and there are some rare performances from the 80's that were really awesome, but it has never been one of my favorites live. It is a fun, energetic song live, but vocally it has never really done anything live. So I never have understood why she chooses to perform it at EVERY solo AND Mac show AND on TV. I think Stevie still has a really good voice (Four words: Beauty and the Beast), but I think she just has trouble keeping her breath with the speed of some of the songs.

I disagree. She sounded great at the 2010 show I saw (I was expecting the worst). Better than 75% of the Unleashed Tour (the other 25% being the first 15 dates or so).

Stevie really hasn't had an amazing vocal performance in the past 10 years, other than Beauty and the Beast. Stand Back was just embarrassing on Ellen. I agree with Mitzo that she should focus more on the ballads than the rockers. And as for the Unleashed tour, in my opinion it's her worst tour vocally ever.

I'm an odd bird (big surprise!) -- I love latter-day "Rhiannon." Stevie's lower, more seductive register, the slow-burn delivery... it really clicks with me. I honestly can't remember the last time I listened to a pre-'90s live version of it.

I do have to agree, though, that some of the other songs just don't do Stevie's current voice justice. Or vice versa.

Another Ledgie once suggested that Stevie should start stripping her show down, pare back the musicians, pull up a stool and focus more on her slower songs, ballads, etc. At the time, I didn't like the idea at all, but I'm starting to see the possibilities in that scenario. Instead of her having to compete with a loud rock band, the music would be much more understated, and her voice would be allowed far more breathing room in the sonic mix. She wouldn't even have to eliminate all of her upbeat songs -- they could simply be presented in a different fashion.

At any rate... this thread is about "Secret Love," and I'm head over heels for it. The demo never really knocked my socks off. It was a pretty & pleasant song, but never seemed to stay in my mind beyond its three minute running time. This new recording, however, has been stuck in my head for days. The production is contemporary but still very faithful to that "Stevie Nicks" style, and Stevie's vocal is everything I could've hoped for. It soars when it needs to soar, it's vulnerable when it needs to be vulnerable. It's simultaneously heartbreaking (in the best possible way) and empowering. Total home-run.

"Secret Love" isn't a love-at-first-sight kind of girl. I was indifferent at first, because I made the mistake of listening to it through my laptop as soon as it finished downloading. I was worried I'd have to fake it, like I did with "Everyday," hoping repeat listens would reveal something compelling (luckily, I could cheat guilt free with "Planets," because "Everyday" is her worst single). Hours later, I listened again with my noise-canceling earbuds and the song sort of snuck up on me. I've been mainlining it ever since. It's simple, yet very effective; modern but not bowing to any trends. And it's short running time should be noted. Even the best writers need an editor, and she has a good one here. She doesn't wander from the narrative or lose momentum with some weird counter-melody or awkward bridge.

Since watching 'Destiny Rules', I can only picture Stevie bellowing in a closet in that house, with the singing bass flopping around behind her... while Lindsey giggles, and thinks to himself 'Now I've got her!!!'

Nice name, by the way. :wavey:

I've seen her live plenty of times. She can't pull off Rhiannon anymore, plain and simple. I definitely agree she sounds much better live, but there are still songs she just needs to put away because she massacres them live with her current voice.

Agreed. Rhiannon is dull & flat. Even Edge is way too monotone for my taste, but at least the music itself keeps it energized.

Hopy crap, where the hell have you been?

Your so right!! I wrote my review the day it was posted. If we get enough people to post reviews (also remember to give it some shining stars) and hit the "Secret Love" YouTube link - which by the way has not been removed by WB;) It will be very good word of mouth for Stevie's new album. Believe me Warners and Rolling Stone are paying attention. If RS finds that people are still interested enough in what Stevie has to record these days, they just might do a cover feature, and not just a blurb or half page Q & A in the magazine:nod:

The more positive reviews and hits the better. This is partly how the music business works nowadays. If it's a sensation on the internet, then radio may even take notice:thumbsup:

May I also add that I am obsessed with the way she sings the word 'here' in this song? It's got such a long, floaty aspirant.... Very sexy.

Stevie Nicks - new song

The fans are in extasy! ten years following the release of her last album, Stevie Nicks released this week a new single- Secret Love from her upcoming album named In Your Dreams.

The sound is a little enchanting, very suitable for her unique voice. the first rumours of the new album were found in the modern representation of the town square- Twitter.
Nicks' work partners tweeted from time to time concerning the developing album, and teased the appetite of fans who follow Nicks since she became Fleetwood Mac's singer and tambourine.
so here it is for your consideration, the new Stevie Nicks song."

isnt it obvious...what shes talking about.
its not about a relationship. it never happened.
how could it, if her secret love secretly died?

she has a secret love, and has obviously hinted about it...but he didnt respond.
she never told him she loved him...hence the title 'secret love'

so, if it cant be love...then she just wants sex.
and still be friends.

so...if he's 'down here in tears'
he knows how she feels. and doesnt want to risk losing the friendship just for sex...
because he know she loves him...but he doesnt love her.

Didn't Stevie say she used to go to San Francisco from LA becasue she was seeing some guy during Buckingham/Nicks era? I thought I read somewhere she wrote a song about it...he was blond...and she said that she and Lindsey were pretty much broken up. Anyone remember this?

It would tie in to the songwriting era, the songs lyrics and, she's said that Lindsey didn't want this break up. So the, ..."...cmon upstairs...can't be in that room alone...while you're down here in tears...I'm not aking for forever...I'm not asking salvation...I just want to be held for a while..."

Maybe the guy she used to go see "died". Secret love...secretly...died. She never told who "he" was...and never talked much about it except in that 1 interview.

Anyone?

I was laughing to myself the other night while playing this song. I couldn't help but speculate that maybe (especially with all the rumours flying around) that Stevie ressurected this song because Dave Stewart is her "new" secret love!

Do you guys hear a different back up singer...or can you hear that they haven't been syncd/blended/pushed back?

Then it sounds like at the beginning a back up singer is kind of humming...boom doo doo...she' s the main back up singer...and maybe it's Lori or Jana...or the actress that sings, can't recall her name but, she is the blond in the recording pics...Gwennyth Paltro?

Then it sounds like her vocals are dubbed with the original early era vocal...and at times it seems like a duet?
Maybe the actress is recording her on the track because they are filming a biopic.

Stevie talked about this guy lots during the Street Angel tour in 1994 in her introductions to "Destiny", like you describe it.

I feel the same way. I like it but I don't listen to it much now. Maybe because I've known the song for at least 25 years so it's not new to me. It was different with Planets of the Universe. That song was so much more different than the demo. It went all over the place musically.

Don't be too hard on yourself. Firework is a great song
I'm not loving Secret Love either. It's missing something for me, which I can't quite pinpoint. Maybe it's the lyrics, maybe it's the "ooo eees"' I don't know - I just remember hearing POTU for the first time in '01 and loving it right away. Secret Love just sounds ordinary to me and maybe lacks some Stevie mystique. I've played it numerous times. If I don't love it by now, then I won't ever love it.

I wouldn't worry too much. Remember, Everyday was the first single for TISL... and I think it's pretty safe to say everyone thinks that song is a middle-of-the-road boring piece of crap. Speaking of middle-of-the-road boring pieces of crap, remember how Maybe Love Will Change Your Mind was the lead single from Street Angel? How about Love's A Hard Game To Play from Timespace? I don't know. Mobile 1980 was probably the last truly amazing Rhiannon exorcism, although there are a few during the Mirage tour.

I only have one Tango recording of Rhiannon, and that's pretty fabulous, and there's a sensational one in 1990 that floored me, I thought it was from the 80s.

I still say Stevie can pull off an amazing Rhiannon today, I have one from 2008 that I totally love, but, only if you don't compare it to the ones in the 70s. Half the time though, she just sounds bored. Rhiannon needs some passion in it.

I'm not so sure here either. Don't get me wrong, they're both sensational. Rosebud was a one-off, and it's such a shame that a high-quality version doesn't exist! The Midnight Special is also amazing. Butbutbut. My favourite ever Rhiannon is from LA 1975 (at least, that's what I have it down as) and, in my eyes, it can't be topped. At all.

Absolutely! I have a bunch of DVD's from the tour. One of her best set lists! She did No Spoken Word, Blue Denim, Talk to Me, and Rooms on Fire all in one tour. Those are some of my dream songs in there!

Also, I have an infatuation with 'Maybe Love.' I have always loved that song on the album and live.

It may be considered a lacklust album, but from what I've seen/heard from the Street Angel tour, her live performances were anything but that. She sounds and looks really good. Secret Love may not be the best thing she's ever recorded, but it's lightyears ahead of the lead singles she's released the past 20 years. :wavey:
it's very good louie. i think her vocal is the most impressive part of it. she really sounds inspired. it probably is just chum for the waters, but stand-alone, i think it's a great single. i mean, a single can't be too opaque. the lyrics are accessible. i just hope it gets some radio play.

hmmm, I quit listening to the single, but I do like it. Just heard 300 times. :) think the single is sophisticated and very mature. It's got a little bit of strange song structure; it goes from dreamy to dramatic to lighthearted, then repeats. I also think that this is one of those songs people need on an album. I'm sure it fits anywhere on there. What they did is good. It's not a dance song. It's not a power ballad. It is a sophisticated single though.

Hi Everyone,
I'm from Italy and I'm not proper a Fleetwoodmac/SN fan.
I found your forum while I was searching for some news of a collaboration of Michelle Branch (I'm a fan of hers) with Stevie Nicks.
I didn't know WHO Stevie Nicks was. I was curious so I joined the community and started reading here and there.
Yesterday I listened to a SN Greatest Hits and to her songs for the very first time.

Where have I been all my life??? How could I miss such a goddess?!?!

No need to ask: already pre-ordered her new album and listening in repeat-mode "Secret Love". <3

It may be considered a lacklust album, but from what I've seen/heard from the Street Angel tour, her live performances were anything but that. She sounds and looks really good. Rick Vito made the band even better. And the stage decor was really cool. Sorry I missed seeing a show on that tour. Still looking for a tour program!

While I think the house of blues Rhiannon was pretty good, this one is tragic. I would rather have the modern Rhiannon. Here she just sounds like a washed up has-been, desperately trying for notes she can no longer hit, faking most of it, if anything at all. When The Dance came along she was in much better form, even if she no longer tried for those high notes.

This just sort of reminds me of how she currently sings Silver Spring, only much much worse.

The Street Angel "Rhiannon" was far, far better than The Dance, IMO. In Dallas and Houston in 1994 (and HoB), Stevie is manic, singing like she hadn't in years! All those extended lyrics that had been forgotten... And I have several videos from both tours, and Street Angel is better by leaps and bounds. IMO.

On The Dance Tour, IMO, Stevie was trying to blend in and not stand out, so as not to step on any toes/egos. And, yes, I know what I'm talking about.

"Secret Love" ~ Listening again this morning, and bumping the YouTube link on my Facebook page to increase hits... Stevie's voice is doing ALL kinds of strange, incredible things! The music is great, and she could have just sung it and be done with it. But, no, Stevie plays with it and changes things up and really works her vocals!

Thank you, Stevie!!!!!!

At all.

Once it hits the 5:00 mark, it gets pretty epic, pretty quickly.

I feel the same way. I like it but I don't listen to it much now. Maybe because I've known the song for at least 25 years so it's not new to me. It was different with Planets of the Universe. That song was so much more different than the demo. It went all over the place musically.

I think they did a bang up job with "Secret Love" I do. Especially since I would have never in a million years thought she would dig this song out for release over so many better demos.

But I understand what you feel. For me it's basically anti-climatic that the 1st song being released after a 10 yr. solo drought ended up being a highly circulated demo that I've been listening to for over 2 decades. I have listened to it @20 times and think it is above average. The production has me really hopeful about the new record, because I think it's a hint of even more dramatic treasures to come. Stevie's vocal on "Secret Love" should really be applauded and also gives me hope about the new record. She stays true to the original melody line while making little improvements on the lyrics, giving them more depth. But in the end "Secret Love" really made me realize that as much as I love her demos/outtakes I'm much more looking forward to *new* material. So besides Annabel Lee, If there are any other vault songs, I hope they are ones that are NOT in circulation and new to us all.

As far as "Planets Of The Universe" goes... that was more exciting due to it sounding like a new song. I consider the final version and the demos to be almost entirely different songs. The structure was totally revamped. They changed it to the standard 4/4 tempo, and added new lyrics and verses.

The Heart & Soul tour press release stated "Secret Love" would be officially released Feb 3rd - perhaps this date was for radio adds, cause Amazon.com now has the single available for download on Feb.8th.

Jan. 13th was not the "official" release date, just when the song became available for those who pre-ordered Stevie's new cd through WBR - then of course it leaked on YouTube.;)

Single tracks used to be released to radio stations a week or so before the single was available to purchase on Tuesdays. New singles would get to radio stations by the end of the week and usually on the air by Friday. I don't know if it's still the same.

It just occurred to me. I actually love Stevie's modern vocal on Secret Love much much better than the old demo version. I think thats a first for me! I just went back and listened to the good ole Almanac bootleg demo, and while cute, Stevie's new vocal is really captivating and nuanced in all sorts if subtle ways. It's been a long time (25 yrs ago imo) since Stevie has been able to capture or better the vocal of an old demo.

I totally agree with this as well. But there have actually been a couple of times where I've felt Stevie's modern voice has been much more appropriate for her songs. For instance, I think the wisdom Stevie's voice carries on the Dance Silver Springs just totally blows away the more callow Rumours version. And yes... I remember hearing the song long before the Dance was even a glimmer in Mick Fleetwood's eye ;).

The Nicks Fix is usually rather slow at updating things. I'm sure the single will be available on Amazon, iTunes, Zune, and other places tomorrow. Being that you get the single free with the pre-order, I'm assuming the Nicks Fix wants to milk as many pre-orders as it can before it announces you can buy the single by itself. Well I was able to get a hold of some 7" Vinyl singles of Florence and the Machine, but I doubted that Warner Bros would even bother releasing a CD or Vinyl single considering that Stevie's fan base is not as big as it once was and they'd probably make no money out of it.

I was hopeful,

I thought it would also be awesome to have a B-side/Outtake from the album.

I've been looking into getting it played on some of the major Sydney stations, obviously not the top 40 ones since they won't touch it. But our radio stations don't all have twitter like the US ones. So it's more complicated to request a song. Just tonight I listened to the classic rock station just in case, And I heard Talk To Me, which was exciting because I hardly ever hear Stevie on the radio, I thought they might play it to introduce her new single, but no.

Because I'm at work the page won't fully load for me but there should be a link on the main page "REQUEST A SONG", I hear them say it all the time. Also, if you don't see it, send an email directly to Paula Kidwell at [email protected]

I think the song has a good chance of being played on this station. They usually give new songs a chance.

The fact that at her age she still has a major label contract and an album that may get decent promotion by that label is an accomplishment IMO.Some of that may be due to a percieved somewhat large(relatively speaking) fanbase and also an iconic status that most of the names mentioned in the op just don't really have.

How does the chart system work in the US? Like, if she gets to #1 on the itunes rock songs, will she be number 1 on Billboard's rock songs? Cause if she achieved that, I think that's pretty much the arena she wants to compete in.

And maybe Stevie's song is getting released later in the UK? Isn't that normally the case? I know we had to wait later for Britney's new song than the rest of the world did.

Christopher
02-08-2011, 02:24 PM
Ok, it's featured now as one of the new songs of the week.

Yes it is, though it's lumped in with 77 other new songs this week towards the end of the list.:distress:

I'm somewhat conflicted about whether it was a smart move or not on WBR's part to offer a free download with In Your Dreams pre-order on Jan.13th. Almost 4 weeks before the single was official available for purchase online. For instance 99.9% of those that pre-ordered to get the song were going to buy the album anyway. And having the song now precludes the majority of those who pre-ordered to not purchase the single, where otherwise they would have, racking up probably upwards of a thousand downloads on release day and generating the excitement now when it's needed.

The YouTube leak has almost 42K hits as of today, which is not exactly a viral sensation after nearly 4 weeks. I hope Stevie puts out a wildly fantastic video in a couple of weeks that stirs the pot much more. Overall realistically I don't expect this song to be a "hit", I just want it to get a moderate amount of attention. I would have liked to see the YouTube leak generate over 100-200K views by now, that would have been promising. So unless Stevie & Warners have a better and more catchy single up their sleeve closer to the release date, I think IYD will be ballpark selling @ 10-25K copies in it's 1st week. Unfortunately that is Stevies & the record industry's new reality:angel:(unless your the latest & hottest thang.)

The sale of the song on itunes definitely counts towards a chart placement...not sure what chart she'd land on. I think sales and radio spins on the given radio format determine what chart she ends up on.
