Well, what was it?
Tonight I had a spinach wrap, with ham, turkey, swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato, and a little bit of honey mustard. I had a large glass of milk with that?
What about you, what was your favorite thing that you ate today?

It's almost a law here lol. If you refer to it as Dinner people act like they don't know what you're talking about. "But Dinner's at 12pm....." No....That's Lunch... "What is this Lunch of which you speak? Is it one o' them London words? *suspicious eye*".

I never tried that variety. Me and nuts tend not to get along, although Almond is probably the kinder of them. I tried the Walnut variety and literally yacked :s Glad I'm not the only one who's confused her meal types. At least I don't have Curry for breakfast or Lasagna Sandwhiches like some students I know lol.

I would tell you how much cheese my roomie and I have in our fridge right now, but it's slightly disgusting that two people can eat so much of the stuff. Okay, I'll tell you. Three packages of goat cheese (one with herbs), brie, sharp cheddar and this special jerk cheese that we got at a cheese factory at Pike's.

By the way, have any of you ever heard the following?
WAIT to drink your beverage until after you have finished eating. I got this tip in the 80s from a prime-time tv actress, whose niece I was best friends with, for a decade. It seems that one's saliva contains a natural calorie-burning enzyme released as you chew, and that is ruined if you drink at the same time as you're eating .
The actress had an unbelievable body, so I just went along with it and don't even think about it much, and it seems to work.
I've forever tried to talk my overweight Dad into eating his meals in this way, he won't listen and thinks it's all bullsh*t about the saliva. Anyone ever hear this?
If curious, the actress was Lisa Hartman of 'Knots Landing' and she had the most amazingly perfect tummy and she showed it off a lot in those days.

this sounds like one of those bull**** lose-weight-without-trying tips. i can't think of one evolutionary reason humans (whose bodies are built to conserve energy and store it as fat) would have a built in mechanism to burn calories at the beginning of the digestive process. i'm sure LH had a great body, but i'm sure she also starved herself and had a personal trainer. celebs toss these so-called "tips" to the masses so they can deflect from the reality that they work out obsessively, don't eat, and have surgery to suck out their unwanted fat. please don't perpetuate it! if you want to lose weight, EXERCISE AND EAT WELL!

Yes, it was Lisa Hartman Black, just Lisa Hartman back then, before she married Clint Black.
I see Carrie's point, I don't wanna be b*tchslapped, LOL, but I just do believe it about the saliva.
It makes sense to me that drinking while eating would 'wash away' the work that your natual saliva naturally does, all natural, heh-heh like.
Lisa never gave this tip to a tabloid or in a tv interview. She told her niece and I at lunch, and her niece pointed out to me that Lisa had never had an ounce extra on her frame, since her pre-fame days. She was on 'Knots' by the time I met her. I am sure she worked out a lot, as well, by then.
I really believe it: You chew, and your saliva helps process the food, and any beverages allow the saliva not to do the job. I haven't had to diet in 20+ years, and had some chubby-pre-teen years that on occasion would revisit til my early 20s .
And I still love me my junkfood. It's just cookies without milk, now :)

Don't get me wrong, Carrie, I know a salad and a water is way more sensible and healthy than cookies!
I think much also has to do with how many pounds a person needs to lose, which, if it's more than 20 pounds, the sensible, healthy, slow, steady way is the smart way to go.
Lisa's niece and I would sometimes have maybe 10 pounds each back then to lose, and we were barely beyond being kids, so it was easy-ish. That is, til I was 40 and decided I wanted to lose the weight that stayed off 15 years then came back along with another 1o pounds added. So, I lied- or forgot I guess- About 6 years ago, I had to lose 20 pounds. And it was hard. Lots of cardio and tons of hours on the exercise bike, no sweets, little bread, little dairy. It's mostly stayed off, except for 5 pounds I'm losing now.
My DAD who I referenced, has had more than 100 pounds to lose for a long time, which is why I think him beginning by waiting to drink his beverage til after he eats is a good way to start. It could trick his metabolism. Or, it may not. He's handicapped, so can't exercise at all. And for me, I think finishing eating before drinking anything has helped keep the weight off, but I may be wrong, and except for 6 years ago, I never had a lot to have to take off.
It's all an interesting subject to me, and I can tell when someone sounds that they know what they're talking about, as Carrie does. Then again, I thought so about Lisa Hartman, too!
The older I get, the more I KNOW that I know NOTHING!!!!

Yes, we should all get our advice from the notorious metabolic expert Dr. Lisa Hartman. I'm sure her assertions are backed by reams of clinical trial data. And we all know that food like fruits, vegetables and soups don't contain any liquid. If anything, by not drinking any liquid with a meal, you are actually delaying the feeling of satiety that liquid would help to create, thereby encouraging you to eat even more food.
Lisa Hartman is thin because she watches what she eats and she exercises like a fiend. Period.

Oh, Hej, you're hilarious. Blame ME, poor Lisa never said it anywhere public, unless you consider a restaurant that we all dined at as giving advice to the public, at a table for 3.
The obvious truth that there is liquid in soups and vegetables and other foods you may have while eating is a different concept than washing away enzymes by adding a beverage at the same time to whatever you're consuming.
You and your rolling eyes that you have you rolled in my direction, repeatedly. So superior is your intelligence, I realize. Lots of people have way more smarts than I do, the ones with class don't need to be smug about it.
Having an open mind doesn't necessarily mean than thee here is all vacuous 'n stuff, and needing to lose weight only once since I was about 23, at age 40, suggests to me that the 'wait til you're finished eating to drink' advice wasn't bad for me to follow.
I wasn't saying it was sound medical advice or 'correct'. I was just wondering if anyone else had ever heard it, and I guess I have my answer! That's what I wanted. So, it's all good.
I conceded that it may not have any merit, especially for those with a good amount of weight to lose.

I suspect Mrs. Hartman-Black is another one of those aging Hollywood former starlets who tries to make it all look so effortless. For some reason it's considered gauche to be super diet-conscious and admit to having a gym membership. If I hear another twig-thin model insist that she eats In and Out Burger and Krispy Kreme all the time and never works out, I will scream! I would love to hear a model finally admit that she maintains her figure through drastic calorie restriction, rigorous exercise and cigarettes.

One year ago, I decided to get my weight under control. I was 180, and I'm 5'10", not big boned. I gave up most red meat, and bread. I ate a big spinach salad, about 5 nights a week, for dinner. I lost 45 lbs, down to 135(which is almost too small, but I was motivated, so I kept it up). I've had ONE fast food hamburger, in the past year.
I drink a ton of water in the afternoon(2-3 liters, minimum of 2!). I do think the water keeps my stomach full during the day, and keeps me from being too hungry. Yes, the big salad for dinner, was my one meal for the day, plus some late night beer!.
I have put on 5 lbs, in the past month, but that's only because I've had a sh*t ton of cookouts and dinners, that I've been going to, lately. I'm back on the spinach salads, and that 5 lbs will be gone, in a week or two.
Not exactly the healthiest diet in the world, but it works for me. My blood pressure is down 20 points, and my cholesterol is down 93!!!!!!!! My doctor had been threatening me with cholesterol meds for a couple of years, and I now no longer need them!
Oh, and I feel like a million bucks now. My friends who are 15 years younger than I, marvel at my endless energy. Seriously. This is probably the best thing I've done in my life. Eating is a terrible addiction, and I finally beat it.

Let's see...Ethan asked about Tuesday's dinner...
2 schooners of Busch Bavarian beer, a pickled egg & too many pretzel sticks to count at the oldest pub/tavern/bar in Long Beach....the world famous "Joe Jost's" (http://www.joejosts.com/) which opened for business in 1924 and has been open ever since.
And, to soak up the last remaining bits of unmetabolized alcohol in my system, two blocks east of Joe Jost's is Original Tommy's Hamburgers (http://www.originaltommys.com/index.php). A triple chili-cheesburger (no pickles, no tomato). Their chili is renowned for being a hangover preventative. (BP probably should've procured some to soak up the leaking oil in the gulf!)
Tuesday was the anomaly in my diet.
Then Wednesdays' dinner was homemade mushroom tortellini with steamed spinach & asparagus and a liter of electrolyte enhanced water.
Tonight? I'm thinking a tossed salad with mushrooms & 1000 Island dressing, and steamed broccoli over penne pasta topped with grated parmesan. But, since dinner is still a couple of hours away, that could change...but, probably not much.

Oh, Hejira, no apologies required, from you- your brief words were smart and informed. My words were naive and hopeful. Like I said, I know nothing!
I admire your writing a lot; and as I drove home, I was thinking 'oh sh*t, I think I got pissy again with someone', walked in, re-read my message and cringed.
I'd like to take back my snippiness. I'm sorry; and I hope you'll accept my apology, and if you do, you're a prince.
I'm angry with myself about it. I'd sworn off such snits, you see. Sigh.
Prior to this thread yesterday, the few that I'd shared the 'drink after you eat' info with also thought it was ridiculous. It was more than 20 years ago that I'd heard it. I still tend to do it; habit, I guess.
Drinking lots of water through the day can really cut my appetite before a meal, I've found. A nice side effect I get if I drink lots of water, is that I can't tolerate smoking, and though I have cut way down, I really want to quit, completely.
It's just that I love cigarettes more than water. Stupid of me. But on the lots of water days, I can't smoke without getting the worst headaches. It probably makes sense, cleansing out the toxins with the bottled waters, and then putting toxins back in with a Marlboro Red = one toxic headache.. No menthols for this nic-head, if I wanted menthol, I'd smoke a coughdrop, but I don't, so won't bother.
OH- back to the 'topic'-- tonight it was 2 pieces of cheese pizza, and a glass of ginger ale, and no xanax, this time.
I 'cheated' and sipped some of the drink because the crust at the top of the slices was too dry. Wouldn't want to choke, after all. Nope :)

Homer, 5'10" and 135 or 140 sounds like teenager-skinny. Good for you! If 180 was the most you ever weighed at 5'10", do you realize that you were just on the 'high' end of what the "correct weight" for that height would be? -- according to this 'chart' my doctor is big on.
I'm 6 feet even, and my doctor gets nuts about me dropping below 165, but 156 to 160 is where I like to be. Right now, about 163.
PS- Oh, I'm asking for it, with this. But, Homer, you are a guy, right? 5'10 and 135 pounds sounds 'right' or thin for a woman, but very, very slight for a man. If you are a guy, you must swim in a 29" waist pair of jeans, cuz even at 163, I have room in my 32's and fit into most of the older "31's". I'm sure I'll never wear a 30" again, though.
Edit: On second thought, I think 135 on 5'10" sounds very thin for a woman, also. That is a lean weight for the height.

I didn't mention, that the 45 lbs in the past year, wasn't "all" of it. Three years ago, I was up to 215. Not obese, but very chubby. I lost 30, and maintained that. Last fall though, I had sort of a life changing epiphany, and decided that I was going to make some personal changes. Permanent changes. So yeah, from three years ago, 80 lbs lighter!
Yes, I'm a guy. Funny thing is, people always thought of me as a fairly big guy. I ~was~ strong. Still am, sort of, but I've lost a lot of muscle, with the weight. And yeah, I'm below 28" jeans now. I tried to buy some at Kohl's, a few weeks ago. And the smallest they had, were 28's, and too big. I'm embarrassed to admit this, but I now know that I can wear women's size 0. I've bought a few pairs of jeans at Goodwill, and I'm relegated to either shopping the boy's section(usually too short, as I need 32 long), or the women's jeans. I just look for one's that don't look feminine(fancy stitching on pockets, and the like).
My shirts? Well, I WAS wearing Extra Large's. I'm now in smalls, and even some extra smalls. Guys, I fukcing love this! I've not been THIN, since I was about 8 years old. Never obese, just always 30 lbs over(if not a little more). I'm now the boss of my dinner plate, and my stomach, for the first time in my life. And that, my friends, is an awesome feeling for me.

^ Well, a great big fat congratulations to you! Your achievement is mindblowing.
You're there. You're beyond there.
Now have a bacon burger and a milkshake, just one! I'm bad at math, but you have lost a huge percentage of your total body weight and quite quickly. You deserve to be very proud of yourself.
As a man, you deserve not to be embarrassed to fit into a woman's size 0, but it may be a sign, so pls be kind to yourself and to your body. Don't mistake any of that for criticism!* You have achieved so much! Oh damn. That isn't going to go over.
* I am in no position or condition to criticize anyone, my life this year has been surreal with crazy stuff, withdrawals from prescription med 'dependency' then put on medication totally mis-prescribed for me. I've also had other medication malfunctions, one contributed to me walking out on a Stevie concert after 2 songs because I was exhausted and pissed off. A lot of this I have shared here, and I capped it all off by moving into a house so ridiculously huge for me it's comical.
So, don't let any comment from this trainwreck** that is I de-rail you. As if it could :)
Congratulations again, and enjoy it all!

Homer, I'm curious, and ok, nosey. Age range? I've told mine a bunch of times, not that it means you have to. 46, here.

Dang, you make me want to lose 20 pounds!
Haha, I don't take it as criticism! Yeah, I'm thrilled, with what I've accomplished. It sounds egotistical, but for ME, it's probably the greatest thing I've ever accomplished. I mean, I'm a college grad, and all that, but on a personal level, this means more to me, than almost anything else I've done. A personal victory!:blob2:

Yum. That sounds good.
While I have never liked alcohol, I just mixed myself a vodka and ginger ale. Reading The Ledge with a drink in hand is a first, for me. Oh, and one day shy of 3 months, I have to share... I no longer crave opiates, it's over. Actually, it's been a week now that I've been over it, and it feels so freeing. I quit 3 months ago after almost 8 years on a prescribed opiate 3 times a day, but it was only last week that I felt 'I don't care anymore, it's like I never was on them'. That was BIG.
Truly, I don't like alcohol enough to ever drink a lot. Never have liked it. I just want a little something, it's just how I am, and always have been. But now I know not to get what I like- just have a little vodka maybe twice a month, two drinks is my max.
Happily, I said 'no' to this other narcotic suggested that I try for a month to maintain this, called subutex, this week at my doctor's. No thank you. Didn't need it. Amazed and grateful.
OK, back to the food---tomorrow I'm cooking an old fashioned Commie dinner for my parents and I-- kilbosi, which they love and I hate, kraut, pierogi with grilled onions (which I love), and a small batch of the Hungarian nut pastry my Dad loves, though we aren't Hungarian, made with flour, eggs, sour creme and marzipan with sweet cream butter and sugar and light-brown sugar, chilled, rolled out and then shaped into crescents. I hate that part of the process. My mom is legally blind and her crescents still look better than mine do. Even now, she puts me to shame folding laundry, too. Guess I just can't fold. Oh well. Other than that, I'm great in the kitchen and laundry room!
Leftovers, if any, will be left for Dad after I leave their house. Good baked goods are not to be kept here at my house, overnight, I would wake up from a sound sleep and eat whatever was left and it'd be gone by noon. This vodka is kicking in. Nite :)

That's funny. I rarely take naps, maybe once a month...but when I awake from a nap, I MUST eat something. So it is written.
Congrats on the kicking in. I'm mixing a band now, Beck's Dark in hand, soon to be followed by a shot of Red Stag(or 3!:D ).

Which flavor of pop tarts, Danielle? I think the brown sugar cinammon are best, but have 7gms of fat per 'tart' whilst the chocolate, blueberry, strawberry and cherry only have 5 gms fat per 'tart'. Those 2 grams add up when you're looking at an empty box!

Sigh. Blueberry & strawberry Pop-Tarts are pretty much the only way I can eat fruit.
Oh, and daquiris.
Don't get me wrong - I want to like fruit. But for some reason, every time I try to eat real fruit, either my lips swell up all weird or my throat itches like freakin' crazy and it's just not worth it. I have no idea why. It happens the worst with apples, peaches, and certain types of melon like canteloupe & honeydew. I have the same problem with avocado, but to a much lesser degree, so I can still eat those.
Bananas don't do it, but I can't stand the way bananas feel, so I can't eat them. I can eat cooked fruit without the swelling or the itchy, but again, can't stand the way they feel, so that's out, too. I have texture issues. I'm like the world's tallest 4 year old.
But for dinner today, I had lamb shwarma. Cute Guitar Boy & I discovered this amazing place up the street that does Middle Eastern, Mediterranean and Italian food, and they deliver. Score! I haven't had proper Middle Eastern food since I left Michigan lo these many years ago, so this is awesome.

GAH. I hate plastic cheese. The only way I can eat it without wanting to yak is on a burger from a fast food joint. I think it's because those are already trashy, and no amount of gruyere is going to class them up, so I might as well give in and enjoy my McDouble which has no right being as delicious as it is.

yeah, i agree about american cheese applications. although i have one other exception: it is occasionally delicious on grilled cheese. i prefer colby or cheddar, but sometimes you just gotta have that plastic-y goodness.

On the other side of the weight loss sub-topic, I have a question. I've been desperately trying to get some weight onto my mom, who is diabetic, and wouldn't touch sweets, anyway- The insulin 4 times a day* that she takes doesn't work right unless she eats substantially, and she just has no appetite and won't keep doctors appointments made for her. Is there anything anyone knows of that boosts appetite (medical marijuana is not an option) and could put some much-needed weight ON to a 75 year old woman? Thanks.
*when she refuses to eat, per her doctor, she takes no insulin. So, her diabetic numbers can get way off, which inspires her to eat. Usually, we manage to get her to eat to take the insulin, but it's a struggle for her to be hungry, when she isn't.

I'm happy for me, too! And yes, my family even tried to have an "intervention", about 3 months ago! "Enough already, don't lose anymore!" I told them to mind their own business, and I've been stable, for almost 3 months now. I do wanna knock this 5 lbs back off, and I will.
And it's funny about the burger remark. I just left work, and a coworker had a go box, for a friend that didn't show up for lunch. So I just had a mushroom swiss burger, and fries. Actually, I threw the bun away, and only allowed myself half of the fries. It was yummy, though!

Krogers has had small lobsters, for a couple of months now, for $5. How is this possible? Did they over-harvest, when the oil spill happened, before it got there? Anyone know? I thought all seafood was supposed to go through the roof, after the oil spill....?

Thinking about the effect on wildlife because of the oil spill makes me so sad/mad. I think people had a tendency to merely focus on the financial/human consequence of it, really. But that's just one Vegatarian Hippie's opinion lol.

I ate one piece of the spani and drank more than half a bottle of Bolthouse Farms 'Perfectly Protein Vanilla Chai Tea', which is tasty but high in calories (640 calories for 32 ounces) but I prefered drinking that to eating much. It will be gone momentarily.
Might have one piece of the stuffed cabbage tomorrow. I don't feel like eating much, but chances are I'll want a Starbucks Vanilla Frappucino tomorrow, the big 13.9 ounce bottle, again loaded with calories. Tasty beverages are more appealing to me right now than food is.

^Yum. Sounds good, it's been forever since I have had any stroganoff, I even liked the Hamburger Helper version of it, long ago.
"Comfort food"-- I like that term, and have always wondered about it, I guess it's anything that makes you feel good. The list could be endless, I bet mac and cheese is on it.
Yet, it does seem that there should be a "Stress food" list, and I've never heard of the term. If there's comfort food, there's gotta be stress food, or it's just not an even playing field.
Stress foods?-- Lima beans; anything that gets stuck in between your teeth (why I won't bother with ribs), flour-free cake, sugar free cake, anything too hot from the microwave that burns the roof of your mouth. Which food stresses people out most, I wonder.
Egg Salad
I bet.
And the best comfort food?

Haha. I don't know about stress food, but I do love me some comfort food. I think it's definitely anything that makes you feel better or cozy or like "home." Probably everyone has different things on their list, but there do seem to be some universals in American homes, like mac and cheese, or anything with gravy. I've noticed that most things people refer to as comfort foods aren't exactly healthy, either.
The majority of the time, though, when I need some comfort food, I head for the stuff I grew up eating. I spent much of my childhood in a town predominantly inhabited by Eastern European folks - mainly Hungarian, Polish, and Slovak.
My family is Hungarian, so I am fond of the Magyar staples my mother and grandmother made, like haluski (basically noodles with cabbage), beigli (a rolled pastry, traditionally filled with walnuts or a poppyseed mixture - I like the poppyseed best) and kaposztasalata (coleslaw, but instead of mayo, you use oil and vinegar). My mom loved spicy food back then, too, so she always planted tons of Hungarian wax peppers in her garden - I like those straight, like you'd eat an apple or something. They look similar to banana peppers, but have more bite.
I also love Slovak foods like pagach (basically a mashed potato pizza) and halupki (stuffed cabbage - the Polish call these "galumbki"), and the heavenly Polish sausage sammich or a giant pot of pierogi.
Om nom nom.

STOP making me hungry, biotches!!!
My comfort foods, are "winter" foods. Mostly stuff that my Mom made, when she was still here(and/but I'm a pretty damned good cook, myself). Here's my short list:
Meat loaf!(god, I love me some f*cking meatloaf, on a cold winter Sunday!)
Curried chicken casserole
Gumbo
Lasagna
My own 5 alarm chili....so sweet and hot, it's the best! Sweat, rolling down your face....mmmmmm....
BUT, I've lost 45 lbs in the past year, and eat mostly vegetables now.....so I'm relegating myself to these things, maybe every OTHER Sunday, during the winter. Made the best meatloaf ever, a couple of weeks ago.....gumbo's next, on my list!

The recipe for petep9000:
To serve 4
Approx 100g Dried Soya Mince
1 jar of bolognese sauce (because I'm lazy and poor so Aldi's it was)
2 small carrots
1 clove of garlic
1 small red pepper
marjoram, orgeano & paprika
Soak the mince in boiling water until it's done. Drain.
(Whilst the mince is soaking)
Dice the carrots and pepper finely before putting into a saucepan (off the heat)
Crush the garlic before dicing and add to the same saucepan.
Add the mince and the sauce to the saucepan and put it on a very low heat. Sprinkle in the tiniest amount of paprika and marjoram before adding as much oregano as you like.
Simmer for 25-30 mins.
Boil up as much pasta as required (I use a lot because I lavvv it).
When the pasta is cooked, serve it up with the bolognese stirred through.

*sigh* I so miss Trader Joe's. Austin has none because Whole Foods is headquartered here. Whole Foods is so insanely pricey, but the wonderful thing about TJ's is they're just dirt cheap. Especially for things like produce and wine.
I've just heard SOOOOOOOO much about "Two buck Chuck"(so many references, in so many contexts), that I'm curious, beyond belief!

That's what I miss most of all! Though it's nothing spectacular at all, it's easily better than a majority of wines costing many times more. And once you get used to buying very drinkable wine for $3, it's hard to go back! I love TJ's almond champagne too... God, that stuff was good!!

I just heard, two nights ago, that my town is getting, the first Southern Indiana's Trader Joes. I can't wait!
OMG, TJ's is phenomenal. Their business model is all about cutting out the middle man (90% of everything is TJ brand), every day low prices (i.e., no weekly specials) and most importantly for me, selling mostly organic and vegan products. And from what I can tell, the TJ brand products, especially in the frozen food aisle, are EXCELLENT. I love TJ because they are such an F*** You to the mega-corporate food empire. You don't see toxic food conglomerates like Kraft, Kelloggs and Nabisco represented here. The only downside is limited selection- they basically carry only one version of each item. But really... do we need to roam down aisles with 15 different brands of penne pasta? TJ's $1.29 whole wheat penne is good enough for me!

Wow, wow, wow. I can't wait! I just heard, at the NYE party I went to, that TJ's is coming to my town. If you think it will be a tremendous success in your town, imagine an A-bomb explosion in NYC, home of the $3 tomato. Back when TJ's first store opened near Union Square, there were literally lines down the block just to get into the store. Even today, there are still lines to get into TJ Wines, which is a separate store next door. I heard somewhere that this TJ receives 10,000 customers every day and has the highest gross revenue per square foot of any store in the entire city. It's a tiny store too- perhaps as big as a typical pharmacy.

I can certainly imagine that that's what it will be like, here. My town is, quite literally, a liberal OASIS, in a sea of redneck mediocrity. We always say, go 30 miles in any given direction, and it's a different world! A scary world.
I can't wait to get me some TJ's!
I do worry, somewhat, about what it will do to all of our already existing healthfood/international markets that we have(and we have quite a few for a town of only 100K). Obviously, the weaker ones will fail. UGH! My favorite one, is directly across the street, from the location where TJ's is going in.
I almost feel a Walmart analogy coming to mind. Company comes in, and does everything better(not) and cheaper than anyone else can do, and runs everyone else out of business.
I'm still excited about TJ's, but the possible ramifications just crossed my mind.....

TJs does carry some quas-international fare (veggie dumplings, curries, pad thai, etc.), but it's hardly enough to replace a real ethnic grocery. They don't carry soba noodles or seaweed. The reason why TJ will not run other businesses out of business is that their selection is very, very limited. For example, you really will not find cleaning products, cosmetics and many toiletries there (although they do carry Tom's of Maine products). TJ does excel in terms of baked deserts, breads, snack food, cheese, frozen burritos (??) and coffee.

I had an anxiety attack in TJ's near Union Square. I was with a friend who wanted to "pick up a few things" on the way back to his apartment. It was sooooo crowded, and we wound up in a traffic jam of carts. I knew that so far, my friend only had a few plums in his cart, and yet we were going to endure the crowd of carts just to pay for them. My face and ears turned scarlet, I broke out in hives on my neck and started to hyperventilate because I felt trapped. I told him I'd wait outside because I couldn't handle it. I'm just not a crowd person anymore. :distress:
Yeah, the Union Square TJ's is not for the faint of heart. Have you been to the new one in Chelsea? It is enormous! Plenty of elbow room and the lines are not so "snaky." And not so full of those annoying NYU kids.

For Supper...I had a whole lot of mushrooms. Turns out my Mom's been cooking her Chicken Pot Pie for years with effin Creme of Mushroom Soup, and today decides to tell me before I eat it. I hate mushrooms, and just knowing it had a billion little minced mushrooms in it had a great enough psychological effect on me that I had to eat it very carefully trying not to get a big piece of mushroom. I seriously couldn't deal. I had to leave. Not only was it crowded as hell, but there was NO FOOD. I guess that's what they get for putting it directly below an NYU dorm. Unfortunately, it's the most convenient TJ for me, so I got TJ-less. The one in Chelsea and the one on the UWS are both pointless because of how annoying it is to get to them from my locations.
Tonight, I sauteed up some onions, broccoli and spinach in some oyster sauce and mixed in some pre-cooked udon noodles that are meant to be made into soup (they come with a flavor packet) but that I never eat in the intended way, mostly because the instructions for making the soup are in Japanese.

Okay, I'm obsessed with Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives...
A couple of weeks ago, they featured a Jamaican restaurant in Nashville(where I'm vacationing now). So, I searched it out, and went there today. If anyone saw this episode, the lady was even nicer than she was to Guy Fieri. Gave me like 5 different samples of different dishes, so I could decide. We talked for about 10 minutes, before I picked something. She kept asking me, and everyone else, if we thought she looked like Oprah, because she said everyone who saw 3D, thought she looked like Oprah.
Anyway, she asked me if I like spicy(which I love), so I went with the spicy jerk chicken, with cabbage, red beans and rice, and a jonny cake(bread). But I got some mango hot chili sauce on the side, and that sh*t would melt steel! I mean, it was good, but I left there, drenched in sweat!

So, I had a nice productive day!
Searched out the Trader Joes in Nashvegas! And later ate a Diner, Drive-Ins, and Dives, featured establishment.
So, Trader Joes....I liked it, a lot! It was much more of a traditional type grocery store, than I imagined. Dog food, cleaning supplies, etc...
However, due to Tennessee's archaic blue laws, grocery stores aren't allowed to sell wine, so they only have beer...no Two Buck Chuck! I talked with a stock girl, for about 20 minutes(people in TN, are the friendliest people in the world), and she said TJ's probably wouldn't be doing any more expanding here, unless that law would change, because wine is a BIG part of their business.

I just love that show. So, I'm flipping channels in my hotel room, just now, and came across a game show with Guy Fieri. It looks kind of stupid, but I'm watching anyway, since it's Guy(and since they don't offer The Food Network:mad:)
There's actually another place in Nashville, that they've done, that I almost tried today(Arnolds, a "meat and three" restaurant). But I'm not really much of a home cooking type of guy, so I'll try it, next time. Plus, I've become friends with two different restaurant owners here(that's HOW LONG I've been coming to Nashville, that I've made so many friends here), so I always feel like I have to eat at their places, at least a couple of times on each trip. I actually drove 90 minutes Wednesday, just so I could eat at my friend's BBQ restaurant, in Springfield, TN.

I had a bad cold for lunch.
During 3 breaks from snow removal intervals, I made it through most of a can of Mushroom and Spinach soup I didn't want, but was good for me to have.
Even cold medicine without acitemophin was a responsible choice, as I have it in one of my prescriptions, anyway.
Now for a 1:15 a.m. snack, one small, remaining final bowl of Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal, hot chocolate with a tiny shot of chocolate liqueur and an Alprazalam. I feel hungry, so I just cooked 2 pieces of bacon, that should make the sleep kick in. I always have to eat a tad more than I want to sleep well- but still, a can of soup, small bowl of cereal and 2 pieces of bacon isn't all that much food to consume in one day.
The food for Mom and Dad: I only served one meal for them today, because I had been feeling sick, so left quickly after lunch not to spead germs. I made them Lobster Salad for lunch, very easy, on lettuce for Mom and bread for Dad, and soup, I can't remember which kind.
They did the frozen Marie Callendar dinners for their dinner tonight, probably the beef tips with green beans and red potatoes my Mom likes.

The best beef stew to me, is one that has been slow cooking in a crock pot all day. Want one of my secrets? Brown gravy mix(the powder) in it, as stock. Gives it an over the top flavor! It's like the missing ingredient. Try it!
Oh, and I just looked at your link. Know what I've been using a lot of, lately? Chorizo. Aldi's has their own brand, and it's only about $2, for a lb package. At Krogers though, they have chorizo seasoned ground turkey, for $1.59, for a 1lb sausage chub. Of course the turkey's much better for you, but I was checking the caloric info, and the difference, surprisingly, is minimal. Like only 15 or 20 calories difference, per serving.
But about the only way I can stand ground turkey, is this way, or they also have taco seasoned ground turkey, which is tolerable.
I know, on the will power...after 16 months of success, I feel like I've started to falter, since about November. I'm bound and determined to keep it under control, but it's so hard. Especially in the winter, when I crave comfort foods.

Tonight, I was lazy- Heated up for my parents a grocery store bought Quiche Loraine, 90 seconds in the microwave, with french onion soup from Costco, which comes frozen in circular plastic wrap encasements and is very tasty, micro time I think is 8 minutes, but I didn't want it tonight. Diet 0 sugar gram Tea was their beverage. That was their dinner.
I changed one bed, told my dad he could too remember whether or not he had cancelled his doctor appointment tomorrow, and he said he'd call the doctor tomorrow and let me know at 12:30 and to shut up, if he wants to say he can't remember, then I can let him do that.
I came home and microwaved a jumbo cookie with colorful peanut M&Ms in it for 11 seconds, had half a glass of non fat milk and half an alprazolam. That was my dinner. Had a good but easy workout shoveling light snow for 45 minutes, which killed most of my appetite, so the cookie was perfect. Unhealthy, yes. Tasted good.
Breakfast I'm going to do egg-white omelets with mushrooms and provolone and have a piece of garlic toast. May put garlic in the omelets, too. Garlic makes me feel like I have extra strength, and yes, I brush my teeth afterwards.
What are the most fun foods to cook? I want to cook something fun, soon.
I used to find lasagna (lasagne) fun to make. I heard an Italian cook share a secret years ago- Make meatballs before you begin the lasagna, with ground beef, sausage and pork, and of course, chopped or minced garlic. Then, as you 'build' your lasagna, crumble up the meatballs (or slice them with a knife) and place over the ricotta mixture but with extra cheese and light on the tomato sauce as you layer it, then extra sauce and big meatball pieces covered with cheese as the top layer. Works nicely and tastes great.
Lots of steps, though. What's fun?

Sounds good. I love to cook. And while I do shy away from 3 hour dishes, I like things that take 45-60 minutes to put together.
I'll have to try that, with the lasagna. I'm trying to get all my "winter cookin'" out of my system, before spring hits. I want to do one more lasagna, a pot of gumbo, cabbage rolls, and a pot of chili, while it's still cold out.

The only time I'll even entertain the thought of eating steak is if it's well done. Charred to a crisp is about all I can stomach. I should probably just pass on the steak all together. :p
Tonight I'll just pass on eating. I've been so depressed lately everything tastes like sawdust. I'm 5'8 almost 5'9 and about a 114 pounds. My Dr. is none too pleased, but I don't give two sh*ts about that.

Yeah, you don't LIKE steak. You like shoe leather. Bleck. I can eat it raw. Whenever Mom used to make beef stew, she'd have to run me out of the kitchen, because I was eating up all the raw, cubed beef.

Me and the husband love our steaks rare, y'know just show the pan to the meat!
We have some friends who like their steaks cremated - what a waste, it takes them ages to hack off a bitesize chunk.
Lancashire Hotpot is a simple dish but really tasty, its one of those dishes that gets tastier the longer its cooked or warmed up the day after - except that we never have any left to warm up the day after  And I wonder why I can't lose weight!
It's basically bitesize pieces of lamb (which go melt-in-the-mouth tender if cooked for around 4 hours) with lamb stock, onions and carrots, all topped with slices of potato which go nice and crisp on top and fluffy underneath. The cabbage is served as a side along with some mint sauce.
It's funny cos my Mum's tastes different from mine yet they're basically the same but both fantastic!

Stop stealing my tastebuds!
I had to Wiki Hotpot yesterday, and Vindaloo today! I love curry dishes! And yes to the sweat! When a Thai restaurant has a "hot scale" of 1-5, I always get at least a 4! And then I usually have the red pepper sauce on the side, so I can turn the 4, into a 5, if it's not melting me enough! I want to be drenched in sweat, when I leave!
Sounds good. I'd like that!
Now, thanks to you, I've got to make something curried, for dinner!:wavey:
Edit - so I diced up a boneless, skinless chicken thigh, sauteed it, then added some stir fry vegetables, roasted red peppers, and green curry sauce, from Trader Joes. Over a small bed of rice. Mmmm.....

The latter sounds really good, but the former sounds amazing! I went out with my friend, last night, to a Tibetan restaurant, and had curried rice with scallops. On a scale of 5, I ordered a 4, and it was perfect(5 was called "chef's challenge", and I was intimidated by the title!). I had a variation of the traditional italian stuffed shells. Blacks beans, white corn, scallions, onions and chipotle peppers with adobo sauce and a generous layer of manchego cheese on top.
It was the first time I'd had manchego (made with milk from manchego sheep), and it was like a parmesan/monterey jack hybrid.

I don't really care for chocolate. No one believes me, but it gives me a headache. I like chocolate mixed with something else, like Reese's(my all time favorite) or Snickers. But a dark chocolate cake, with chocolate icing? Honestly, I can feel my head throbbing, just thinking about it.....bleck!
I just went to Trader Joe's today, and stocked up on a bunch of their healthy stuff. I love their tuna, in either red or green curry sauce. I put it over a bed of rice, and not counting the rice, only has 210(red curry) or 200(green curry) calories. Even better? $1.49! Cheap, delicious meal! I also buy their curry sauces, and throw my own chicken and veggies in it.
I had been told that a TJ's was coming to my town. Apparently, I was lied to!:mad::mad: I know there's one in Indy(an hour away from my town). I guess I need to plan a trip around that, so I could finally buy some perishables.

You and me would have some fantastic meals out together methinks! All those chillies and curries! All that cheese!
Do you like icky cheeses like a really ripe Camembert or Gorgonzola? I like 'em when they are ready to walk off the shelf
Like any cheese though, doesn't have to have legs!
I do like em a little stinky, but even I have my limits...
I never met a cheese I didn't like, until I bought some limburger, a few years ago. It was on sale, and I thought, "hell, I like all cheese.....surely it's reputation is worse than it actually is". Nope, while IN the fridge, my Mom and I kept saying, "what's that terrible smell". It was IT, IN A CLOSED FRIDGE, bothering us in the next room. I had to put it out on the porch, and dispose of it, the next day.
Last month, I had some Stiltson(?) that was very stanky, but in a good, bleu cheese, sort of way. I couldn't leave that sh*t alone!

Today's the start of my new diet, as such I shall be having half a bowl of Special k cereal with soya milk, as I did for breakfast and lunch.
Talk about us all wanting to feed Lindsey up, we need to get some good food into you as well my girl!

Yep, love Chinese too!
We like to go and have a really posh Chinese meal, but we also love going to our local Oriental Buffet place where you can just pile up your plate over and over and eat things in any order you want.
I go to the same places. However, I always get a doggie box to go, so that I can't keep going back. I try to overcome my weak moments, by cutting myself off at the pass!
Mmm, and the place I'm going, has sushi, too!!!!!!!!! I can't wait! Wasabi until I cry!!!!:wavey:

That's it!!!! F*ck me with a chainsaw, it was the BEST cheese EVER! It was calling my name, long after I was supposed to be done eating for the day. I finally relegated myself to eating it all one night, just so I'd be done with it's siren song!

Bah. I need to lose weight.
Lifelong effort. Fortunately for me, I've become a bit of a human accordion. I eat for awhile, until I put on about 5 lbs, then get mad at myself, and "salad" it up, until I'm back where I was. This is my sixth day of vacation/restaurants, so I go home tomorrow, and will eat nothing but salad, for the rest of the week.
Pay the piper, biotch!!!!!

I should just open a restaurant, and be done with it...
Inspired by eating at my friend's BBQ restaurant in TN, on Tuesday, I sort of made my own smoker, today. I put charcoal on one side of the grill, and put mesquite chips and water(wrapped in foil) on top of the coals. I put a rub on a pork steak, wrapped it in foil, and put it on the other side of the grill, away from the heat(my BBQ friend says that slow cooking in the foil, is what keeps it all tender. So it cooked like that, for about 4 hours.....I'm halfway through eating, and damn it's good. I made stir fry vegetables, in green curry sauce, as my side dish.
Yeah, I love to cook, and talk about food!:woohoo:

I am stuffed from enjoying my mom's delicious corned beef and cabbage dinner which she cooked just for me. There were also potato's and carrots and french bread. I drank Almond Milk with it.

Sounds awesome!!! Glad I'm not the only one who loves to cook! I put rosemary and thyme in my pork rub, today.
I've got an asparagus patch in my garden, and they should be starting sprout, here in a couple of weeks!:blob2:
I weigh myself every morning, and as long as I'm within my 5 lb window, I plan a really good dinner. Not necessarily high calorie, but GOOD.

Last night I made Chicken Cacciatore - I love making that because for every slosh of wine that goes in the pan, a bigger slosh of wine goes down my throat :] I am very nicely whoozy by the time its ready!
We had goosefat roast potatoes with it (man, they go so crisp on the outside) and asparagus spears.

Got back a couple of hours ago from a long leisurely lunch at a country pub.
I had Tempura King Prawns with a garlic & herb dip, followed by Pan Fried Seabass served on a bed of linguine with lobster sauce. It was heaven......
The above was accompanied by a couple of large glasses of Pinot Grigot and I am now all sleepy and ready for bed at coming up for 6 pm !!!!

Total simplicity for dinner tonight - cheeseburgers!
I'm attending a large pitch-in dinner tonight. Even though I love to cook, I'm always nervous about cooking for a large, somewhat critical, group. I guess I should go buy 5 lbs of some "deli thing".....
Sorry, just rambling...to stay on topic, I was told deep fried turkey is the main dish. Gimme a thigh!!! And the gizzard!

Know what you mean - I get quite stressed if cooking for guests.
Plus the fact that most of my time is spent in the kitchen when everyone else is chilling with the el plonko!
Oh yes, and I'm usually so hot that by the time I can join in at the table I am literally dripping, with a face the colour of a baboons butt
