Ok. I haven't heard from y'all as to progress lately so I'm starting another food/exercise/crap thread.
So how's everyone doing?
I got quite discouraged there for a bit, didn't stop the program, but I wasn't feeling good about it. Then on Saturday I DID splurge. Like big time. I got a pizza and made brownies. BUT I also exercised over the weekend.
This week I'm completely back on track, making healthier choices, working out. I worked out this morning - did the legs - and I am feeling fab - workouts are so much better with my handy dandy mp3 player :p
So far though I've only lost between 3 and 4 pounds.

Bad: Still stuck at a loss of about 5 pounds. Not excercising as much as I could be. Not totally blowing it on weekends, but cheating occasionally.
Good: Still exercising a couple times a week. Feeling more toned & limber. Clothes fit a lot better. Eating healthier - more protein, less simple starch, more fruits & veggies.

I'm still not feeling a whole lot of difference in my body - but admitedly I've not been exercising as much as I should be - only last week did I finally step it up to a pace that can be considered moderate to high.
I am eating more veggies - I'm experimenting with different ways to cook them - and trying veggies I've never really eaten before - so far so good! So I've been able to creep more into my diet.
Now I need to learn the balance of splurging on the weekend without going completely overboard.

I was thinking about starting one of these.
Last week I started walking around the school I live by. Now I've started jogging some of the way, especially when there is an incline. Also running up and down steps. I'm trying to eat less. I've got to get this baby weight off!!!!!
Oh, earlier today I put on FM: The Vintage Years and danced around to Rattlesnake Shake for like 15-20 mins!! Very freeing.

Hate to say it but over the summer, I gained about 11 pounds:eek: We moved this summer so unpacking and remodelling several rooms in the new house has been very stressful. For the past four months we have been eating out at least once a day. Fast food is not my friend:lol: I will be on track again eating healthy meals once our kitchen is finished. Exercise has been painting walls and alot of scrubbing floors, windows, baseboards and walls. Hasn't helped too much with weight loss but definitely helps me sleep better:D

I'm up to week 4 on my running program (running 5 minutes, walking 2, running 5, walking 2 for a total of about 40 minutes), but late last week I pulled muscle in my foot, so I've had to take it down a bit. my foot hurts like hell, I don't know what I did or how long it will take to recover fully, but I'm still walking. my eating is going ok, not blowing anything out of the water, but still not quite cutting back on sugars as much as I could. I've lost another 2 pounds (14 total).
by the way, Kashi Lemon Rosemary Chicken frozen dinner is a.mazing!

yeah, I didn't know that had any until I saw them. I've only tried the one above, but it was really good. I was shocked. I could've done without the mushrooms, but there weren't that many and they aren't overpowering.

Wow I had no clue Kashi made frozen meals....but erm since I don't like their cereals..I'm wary - although I'm always looking for edible frozen meals for lunches.
Also - congrats on your loss so far Jazzy! You're doing great, but sorry about your foot - I think it's admirable that you're still doing something - so many (myself included) would have stopped exercising altogether after an injury.
Just take care of yourself though - and don't overdo it :o

I'm afraid of overdoing it. I hope I'm not. I am so motivated this time it's awesome. I haven't been this motivated since I was like 18-20, when I was 160 pounds and in amazing shape.

I haven't really been on a program. I was down to around 160 at the beginning of June, from a high of about 170-172. I've now crept back up to almost 170. I went to work out yesterday, but didn't make it today. :distress:

my car is broken, so i haven't been getting to the gym. i've been walking a lot, but that's not the same. i'm going to go for a bike ride today. i've been doing really awesome food-wise. i mean, i'm almost shocked at how well i'm doing. it's been two full months now, and i really don't even need to think about what to eat anymore. yeah, i'm pretty much awesome. i don't know how much i weigh at this point, since i haven't been to the gym, but my jeans are falling off of my ass  . seriously, i went to macy's yesterday to buy a jacket, and i couldn't keep them up and i felt like a douchebag. oh! AND the lady at the counter totally complimented me on my outfit. ok, they have to do shiz like that, but i did look cute (except for the falling down pants. lol.).
uh, to summarize: i've never felt this good about myself. and i'm glad everyone else is doing well, too. oh, jaz, i'm glad you're doing a run/walk program. i just read this (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/5371116.stm) the other day and thought of you.

That? Is awesome, and you ARE awesome! It's such a relief when you get to the point of not having to count every little calorie or point or carb or whatever. You just know you can have such & such, or that you shouldn't have this or that. Good for you.
I've also recently realized that my pants are falling down. :o I mean, that's good but it looks like I don't know how to dress myself. The crotch on all my khakis is hanging way too low, and jeans are too baggy. Great, now I'm in better shape but I look like an A-Hole.

Ahh, you have one of those too, huh? My Mom has every excuse in the book for why she doesn't take care of herself. She always has. It is hard to exercise and eat right no matter what your schedule is! If anything, the less busy you are, the harder it is to watch what you eat!

ita. my mom went on and on, listening every (self-perpetuated) excuse for why she is SO much busier than everyone else she knows who can take care of themselves, and then she started crying, making me look like a big bad jackass who was telling her she couldn't eat hohos anymore and had to eat flaxmeal for the rest of her life. She cried? Damn. My Mom loves the self-pity party but I don't think I could make her cry. Maybe. But your Mom is just being manipulative. Her feelings about herself aren't your problem. Who's the Mom here, right?
Lately I've been like a drill seargent to my mom, "JUST GET MOVING" because I worry about her. She's getting so heavy and unhealthy. :( She's got sleep apnea now so she really has an excuse. It's driving me batty. It's funny because I used to do all the same stuff, make excuses, she taught me well, but now that I have figured out how to think differently I have little patience for her. Frustrating!

me too. much to my mother's chagrin, 5 yrs of therapy did me a world of good. my mom hates my (miracle worker of a) shrink. i, too, used to make excuses constantly, but i've snapped out of it. i'm not so sure my mom can or will do the same.

has anyone here used resistance bands for weight training? i decided not to renew my gym membership for next month because a) i'm cheap, b) i'm super miserly with my time, and it takes too long to drive there, wait for machines, etc, and c) my car is broken and right now, i don't care if it gets fixed (see point a). i'm looking for alternatives to machines & hand weights since i don't have any machines and hand weights can be expensive. aaanyway, i bought some resistance bands today. i tried them out and got a great upper body workout and probably the best core workout i've ever done, but not so much with the lower body. any suggestions? it doesn't really have to involve the resistance bands, i just want to make sure i'm not neglecting my legs.

The bands are cool and you can use them on all joints - at least we do in this aeorbics I take. You will never bulk up on bands, but they are cool for girls as they generally do not want bulk.

Yeah, I got some. The legs/resistance mostly comes in from doing various squats while using the bands. But various squats are hard enough without the bands, so you could do that. There's the leg in front kind (not to hard, but great for the butt) then the legs side by side (hella hard, and easy to have improper form). For an alternate to legs side by side, you can do wall sits, which are hella hard as well, but don't do as much for the ol' assaroo. 90 degree angle with your legs, and just stand there with your back against the wall. A minute is hard. Then you can do calf raises, which is just up on your toes, and down, for a certain number of times, however many sets each. I like to hold my hand weights when I do calf raises, bands might be good, too. Also, I got my hand weights for 10 at Walgreen's, if you hit a cheap store you might be able to find some. :)

ok sweet :xoxo: . i'll have to try these. i actually have a pair of 8 lb. weights, which are good for me for delt exercises, but not for biceps or triceps or anything else. and actually, i was doing calf raises w/ the bands earlier, just to try it out, and it worked pretty well.

Um...eight should be plenty. I use 10. They're kinda heavy. actually, per arm, I guess adding two lbs is quite a bit. But you should still use them for the ones you said you don't use them for - it can't be that light for you.
Yeah, you know, if you go out and buy a Shape magazine, you'll probably find some proper form for squats thing. It's important to use proper form, else you won't get a workout, or you'll hurt your knees, or blah.
Sorry about your thunderstorm.

I mean you do not want bulging muscles like guys get. You want to be toned, which the bands can do.
Also - the more reps the better - but form is everything as form isolates the muscle you are tageting with the exercise. Bad form means other muscles are being used to help that one.

Don't be trying to tell girls what kind of muscles they do and don't want.  :xoxo:
But seriously, I've always hated the thing where people think muscles on girls are not cool, and not feminine. Most girls can only bulk up to a certain point, anyway - you gotta be very serious to get like those weightlifterey girls.
I think muscle definition is what separates the Girls from the Brick Houses. "Bow chooka bow bow!"  I love looking strong.
How much definition is best? Coincidentally, the amount that I have. :p
But Strand is right - you could bulk up.
Some people I know care about that. I try to bulk up certain body parts, and debulk others - the point being to get an overall proportional, symmetrical thing going. In other words, I do extra weights on every body part except my thighs.
But I gotta say, my muscly arms were/are my favorite body part. I think they look good on girls. You know, definition?

i do want toned, but i also want definition. i want to be lean, but i also want to look strong. wait, i just realized that everything i'm going to say, amber already said. even the legs thing - my calves could use more definition, and i don't mind working out my hamstrings, but my quads are fine just the way they are ... they don't need any more help.

So true! We also moved from the city to the country. So my whole life has to be re-adjusted along with my pant size:lol:

exactly. I've always read that you know if you have the proper weight by how many reps you do. I normally do 20 reps, but you're supposed to barely be able to do the last rep and don't rest between alternate exercises. I'm actually starting to see some definition around my shoulders...fab.

First off - the notion of girls bulking up like guys - I've heard that basically impossible unless you take all sorts of supplements and work the weights like mega-crazy...women and men are just built differently - so basically we don't automatically bulk up like men by doing regular everday weight training and exercise
I was SO sore yesterday - could barely walk  But again, it was a good sore, I'm getting better at the gym - and it was the first real leg workout I'd done in months.
I just went to the gym again this morning (just cardio) and stewed at Mexican Soap Opera woman. I can't seem to beat her there - every time I alter my time - she's there...I think she must camp out there all morning

You're right. For years women have not been lifting heavy enough weights because of that myth. To bulk up you'd have to really try or be a mesomorph body type. Even still, you can pack on a lot of muscle before looking bigger. I'm finding it is making me look smaller. Muscle weighs more than fat. Although some say that has also been overstated. I do 3 sets of 10 reps as advised by a trainer friend of mine.

Yeah - I knew I'd heard/read about that - and I prefer heavier weights with less reps to lower weight/more reps - but the myth is that heavier/less makes you bulk up.
Not so...at least for normal day to day workouts like what we all mostly seem to be doing. I do 3 sets - 1st set of reps 12 - then 10 then 8...that's what my trainer told me to do - although three sets of 10 works too - I like the 12-10-8 thing though....works well for me :D
I am at that point - if I can keep up the gym I will do ok - I'm not dreading going anymore - and I am finally, once again, feeling good after workouts - so I'm hopeful that this time I will stick with this!

Cool. The best thing to do is to stay in the moment. Maybe you can't exercise for the rest of your life but you can do it today. Know what I mean? It took my friend telling me to go up on my weights for me to do it. For some reason I was really wimpy about it, probably because I didn't want to appear any larger, stoopid!

Are we slacking? Too busy to post? I've been kind of slacking, made it to the gym twice last week, so not enough. I'm going to go at least 4 times this week though. As far as eating, yesterday I did really well. Today I am starving so eating kind of a big lunch. But I don't care, I'm hungry dammit! Fortunately I haven't gained any weight, I was a little worried. But I need to reel it in a bit.

I'm way slacking in the diet department - but mostly because I got sick this weekend - and it's hard to give a crap about how many fruits, vegetables and fats you get in in a day when you're hoping for death.
I hadn't gone to the gym since Friday -but last night I felt good enough to go again -so I did 15 minutes on a bike and 15 on the elliptical - today I'll see about doing legs....and getting back on track w/ the eating.

Come on guys...where is everyone???
So I'm really excited because I am getting my stretch range back!! When I sarted working out again I was dismayed that I could not stretch anywhere near as far as I used to - well last night and today - I've made it damn close -and have done so comfortably :D
Also it's no longer killing me just to make it to 30 minutes during cardio - it has taken way less time than I thought to build myself back up into my routine...in fact I just did 45 minutes cardio plus abs :D
Did legs last night.
My last week of horrible eating didn't do as much damage as I thought - I only gained .4 pound :p So I'm determined to do better with my food this week!

I'm back. Not back on track - back to the thread. I haven't worked out in over a week (the trip out west, then catching up at home afterwards threw my whole schedule off) & I feel really crappy mentally & physically. But I'm "back in training" today - counting points & I'll be doing either elliptical or speed walking after work. At least I didn't gain any weight while I was gone.

That's a plus!
I'm on day three in a row at the gym - it's the longest I've gone (in a row - without a day off in between) and I'm reaching for five!
When I get there early I can monopolize the tv and hence no Mexican Soap Operas and my workouts are lovel.
The best part? I feel amazing and have been sleeping less..finally! I was sleeping WAY too much.

^3 in a row - you go! I really must get back to exercising every day. I used to think "oh, well I worked out yesterday so I can skip a day." Huh? I now realize that's just dumb. Why skip? I'm trying to change my mindset to assume I'll be exercising in some way, shape or for every day, as opposed to scheduling it it. I think it seems like less of a chore if it's an automatic thing.

that's what I've been doing the past few weeks - oh I worked out yesterday I guess I'll skip today - of course then it would turn into two or three days
My excuse of extreme soreness doesn't work now - my body's getting used to the weights and no more painful days after...just that ever-so lovely muscle fatigue-y feeling.
Anyway - I'm so excited that I'm finally getting back into exercising - I didn't realize how much I've missed it! What's even better is now I don't have to buy an entire new Fall/Winter wardrobe because I can fit into my pants again :blob1:

Oy. Okay, I officially suck. I've been terrible lately! I was doing pretty well with the diet change in the summer, counting calories, trying to exercise without going to the gym, and trying to get my sleeping patterns in order. I started slipping around early, mid August, and now I'm now I'm... not quite back to square one, but I'm not super active and my sleep patterns get screwed over by the weekend.
My eating hasn't been too bad. I don't monitor calories obsessively, but I have been sneaking things lately. I got sick of just bran in the morning a few months ago, and switched to this six-grain stuff, and oatmeal. I get a good little workout (yeah, I'll keep calling it that  ) walking around campus, and I've noticed a difference in my outer thighs, if nowhere else. Guess that's where it counts.
I think I've gained back a bit of what I lost, which really helps the depression.

well, after being in Cali and sick last week I didn't work out at all. good thing I didn't blow the diet part too. I haven't weighed so I don't know if I gained or lost or just maintained. I do know that I wore a belt yesterday that I haven't been able to wear for months. yay. I walked my 2 miles last night and will do my cardio and weights tonight. I am convinced if I would come up with a meal plan and stick to it, I'd lose weight faster. I need to sit down and get a plan together cause the diet is what's holding me up from seeing some major results.

It really is. It may be a pain in the ass to try & plan your meals for the week, but it makes it easier & less stressful when you're actually making them. If I plan each day ahead of time (and I do think it helps immensely to plan your entire day - it's much harder to go overboard if you've set up what you'll be eating that day) I tend to eat healthier. With no plan, I get stressed out & give up quickly, usually eating crappy food.

It's just a small plateu - also add in a few minutes of faster intervals to your workout - or maybe 5 more minutes. That and the points should do the trick.

I do points.
But my sister and the WW lady said that in order to give your metabolism a bit of a jolt - eat more points one day...or two days - then eat your normal amount of points the next.
I know you're not officially doing WW though, right? You can't eat less points if it's not in your weight range - that will just hurt you in the long run!

Cutting back on eating is a dangerous slope because when you go back to the previous level, your body will react.
Instead, I suggest upping the exercise in a manner of speaking. Try this, do 25 push ups in the morning when you awaken and 25 at night before you go to bed. If you can, do 25 at noon as well. Try that for two weeks and see if you do not see a difference. Note - if you cannot do 25 each time, do as many as you can until you exhaust your chest and arms, then rest and continue to 25. In a few days, you should be up to 25 at one time. If you can do 25 easily, then make it 50.
Also, after doing the push ups each time, do 25 or more squats without weight. Be sure your form is accurate. Accurate form is to stand straight, feet shoulder width apart, and drop your a$$ below your knees with your shoulders never going over your knees. I made those changes a few weeks ago when I first got stuck. So. Frustrating. I know, I'll do an hour of cardio 7 days a week! That should do it! :p
Well, you kind of might have to. Not seven days, but maybe six. I used to do that regularly to get real results (5-7 days, 1 hour cardio, 1/2 hr. weights). And when my friend upped her cardio to one hour she got results too.
So, you know, start training!!! :p

Cardio is your friend when it comes to weight loss, esp. 30 minutes or more. I do 45 a day on the stairmaster and then do aerobics for an hour or ride the bike or Precor machine for an additional 45 minutes. I get not everyone can or will do that though and thank goodness for my Ipod

No, I eat between 22-25 points per day (they recommend 18 - 25 for my weight.) I don't do the "35 flew points to use each week" thing though.
Oh put in the flex points - they're important!!
and I don't have a point range - it's 22. that's it. And the flex - and you can add more w/ exercise - but generally I don't.

Did you feel sore in your chest, a$$, and quads the day after the first time you did them? If not, then you need more reps. Or, do three sets of 25 or more each time for 75 or more in the morning, 75 or more at noon, and 75 or more at night.
Your body will lose weight if you make it expend more energy than the food you eat can supply.

Well - you can't possibly be big enough to have a max daily points of 25 - you'd have to be like over 190. So from the weight group I'm guessing you're in the max points is 22.
So yeah - daily point intake of 22 - then 35 flex points to use throughout the week.
I'm not getting all my flex points in - the weight loss has been slow - and they're telling me that's why  So that's why they've suggested a few days of more points then a few days of just the 22. Sigh.
In the end it comes down to what works for you. But a plateau is so frustrating....so good luck! I'm sure you'll get over it

I hate you. I mean, good job, buddy!
I want you all to know that I'm not sitting here whining without any intention of listening. :p I hate when people ask you what they can do, then you tell them, but they don't do it, then they whine more! That's not me. I have been relatively successful with my diet/exercise changes over the last few months - weight loss, improved muscle tone, feeling better mentally, more flexible, better heart health, etc. I know what to do, and how to do it, and I have been doing the right things - but now it's obvious I need to kick it all up a notch. I am not about to give up, not by a long shot.
I'm just voicing my frustration - esp. since the last time I followed the WW plan I lost the 14 pounds within 7 weeks. Of course, I was 25 then & I'm 31 now - I guess that really could be affecting my metabolism a bit. As far as the exercise goes, I consider it a triumph that I've had the elliptical for over 6 months & I continue to use it. :D Sounds silly to some people, but it really is a big deal for me - that it's not sitting there acting like a clothes hanger.
Of course I should use it more, and I am trying - I should just force myself to get up 1/2 hour earlier & use it every single morning (although I find that I'm stiff & not able to get as good a workout in the morning as I can in the afternoon for some reason.) I like to use it in the evening, while I watch TV - kill two birds with one stone (not only am I exercising, but I'm not snacking in front of the TV.)
But if it's a choice between spending time with my family, or paying attention to my pets, or catching up with friends, then exercise comes second. When I'm old, I will not give a **** what size I was 50 years ago. But I will definitely regret it if I was so busy working out for 2 hours every day that I didn't call so & so, or I didn't pet my dog enough, or if I couldn't go & visit my family. So while I don't think it's unreasonable to increase my workout time a bit, say to 45 minutes 4-5 days a week, I'll be damned if I allow other aspects of my life to suffer just to lose a few more pounds.
So. To summarize the novel I've just written (that nobody may care to read ) I will make some of the recommended adjustments & get back to you guys. Hope to continue to see improvements & be healthy.

I completely agree---and I didn't think you were being whiny at all - I don't think anyone here is really - we're all sort of undertaking the same struggle.
I'm in the same boat, whenI first did WW I lost 3-7 pounds a week - now I"m losing .5 pounds a week and it's VERY frustrating.
But I just started exercising with frequency - but I will NOT spent more than an hour in the gym - I'm not trying to be a body builder - and the first time around I got amazing results with 30 minutes cardio and weights.....I've never done more. I am now - 45 minutes cardio - that mostly because I've more weight to lose.
So yeah...while I am still on program - I also don't let it take over my life - there are much more important things in life :D

OK. Here's my new plan:
Increase aerobic exercise from 30 to 45 minutes at least 5 days a week.
Strand's exercises (and a few more from Redbook :D ) at least once a day 7 days a week.
Weight resistance exercises at least 3 times a week (I do them twice a week now)
Continue weekly yoga classes, and do yoga at home an additional 3 days a week.
Cut daily points to 22, and use flex points.
I will commit to this & reassess after a month.

I'm telling myself it's muscle since I have been going to the damn gym everyday (well 6 days the week before last, 5 last week). And the weigh-in lady seemed to think that was a reasonable explanation....my clothes ARE starting to feel better...and my favorite part is that I can already feel my stomach jiggle going away. :blob1:

Yay, Jazzy! Yeah, do what Carrie suggested... My favourite snack is PB on apple. Sooo good. Fills me up, too. I have a bit of salad each night at dinner, with some sesame seed oil or my mom's homemade dressing. I used to eat a lot of baby spinach; luckily I went off of it long before the whole tainted spinach thing.
Deanna - Good work! I still need to commit myself to some routine exercise, aside from the walking I do every day. I need to build some muscle and get rid of the stomach jiggle, too. Blugh.

You know, Dee, that's so f*cking stupid. The whole "down to the very last ounce" measurement thing. The more I think about it, the more it pisses me off. Stupid WW - I mean - .3 pounds? Every single one of us probably gains & loses that amount at least once a day! You can't (and shouldn't have to) use that to measure your success.
I do think it's good that you have to weigh in weekly, but that silly little .3 pounds gained can make you feel so ****ty, so down on yourself when it really doesn't mean a damn thing in the scope of things! Argh! :(
I know that you know that Dee, but it just struck me how ridiculous it all is. It's hard enough to count every point, or weigh & measure stuff, and then they nit pick everything down to the last ounce. Bastards.
That said, my friend just weighed in last night & she's down 25 pounds over the course of about 2 months. She bought me an electronic points calculator too - it's so cool! Damn, I love gadgets. :D

I think it's good reasoning to measure the small amounts. It helps you analyze what you've been doing right or wrong when you have that kind of data.

^No. I can honestly say no. I would probably say "that's it?" and be annoyed. I know, it sounds silly, but I'm odd that way I guess.
The weigh in itself if a great way to gauge how you're doing. But I've known several people who have done WW, and all of them at one point have had a great week, they felt really incredible, then the weigh person says "oh, you're up .4 pounds." Well, that probably doesn't mean they were doing anything wrong - maybe they're constipated. Maybe they have their period. Maybe their muscles got bigger.
That small an amount just seems insignificant. Obviously over time, it does add up though.

I do know that - but on the actual weigh day I felt like absolute SH*T. Then I thought of the very things you said and was like...ok. .3 pounds...that's ridiculous - I'm doing well - eating right and exercising my ASS off (literally) so I just shrugged it off - chalked it up to muscle building and kept on with what I'm doing.
Now that I've got all needed WW materials - I'm thinking of stopping the meetings (I have three paid ones left)...and just doing this on my own.

While having a tiny gain or loss like that is demoralizing, it only really matters to people who take the scale so seriously, which is the worst attitude and least effective way to lose weight for good. I should know, I'm one of them!! If you feel like you did everything right and your clothes feel better, then you're doing well. And taking the number on the scale so seriously is only going to screw you up and keep your focus where it shouldn't be.
Deanna- don't let it get you down. Do exactly what you did last week again this week, and I think you'll see it pay off at your next weigh in.
If you keep track for a long enough period of time, you can see patterns develop in your weight loss. I used to keep my food diaries to be able to look back at what I was doing. I used to have a two to three week low point, where I would stay the same or gain a little bit, then for the next two or three weeks I would lose a TON.

You're absolutely right. I do put too much stock in that scale. But I was talking to a co-worker who is into martial arts - and she was saying that when she lost a bunch of weight and toned up the difference in her weight (the actual number) was miniscule...but the outward difference was AMAZING.
So yeah I'm refocusing - and trying not to be so hung up on what that scale says. In the past I would have let that one bad weigh in lead to horrible behavior that day (and probably the next) but I didn't.
I think that signals that shift in attitude I've been trying to achieve...slowly but surely it's happening.

I decided against WW just because I hate keeping up with all the points and I know I'd never keep it up. Just use the scale as a guide and go more by how your clothes fit and how you look in the mirror. I see subtle changes every single day. that's. victory.

Oh, ITA. But that's what annoys me - WW seems to focus solely on the scale, when we all know that's not the best measurement of how you're doing.

And the subtle changes are what matter - they eventually add up to the big changes - and the overall looking and feeling fabulous. We'll all get there....at different times, but we'll get there!

mmkay.
i have lost another 5 pounds so far this month, hoping to make it to 6 or 7 by nov. 1. i'm a little disappointed in myself because i know i could have lost 1- or 12 this month. i really let the colder weather get to my exercise routine. i guess its swift arrival kind of shocked me, and i really let up. bad move, and the consequences are clear! i won't be able to ride my bike as my sole cardio exercise anymore, because it's raining/snowing a lot, i started running. well, it's run/walking. it's probably the same program that jazzy's doing - couch to 5k, but i'm altering it a bit. they recommend doing 3 workouts a week, but i'm only going to do one or two, because of my extra weight and because i'm wary of doing anything too on my knees since my accident. so my new plan is ...
every day:
-cardio, whether it be biking, walking, run/walking, jumping rope (thank you amber), or an exercise dvd
-core strengthening (got a new core workout from mayo clinic (http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/core-strength/SM00047&slide=1))
-flexibility
and three days a week:
-strength training
still rockin' out on my diet, i don't think i need a lot of tweaking there. maybe more veggies. still feeling great. today is a strikingly beautiful fall day here, and i went for a nice bike ride. now i gotta get ready for work.

^ That site is great! I think I'll add some of those into my routine.
Good for you on more loss, Carrie. I thought you looked great when I met you in Cleveland. You know, not in a gay way or anything. Not that I don't think you're hot. Never mind, we've been through this all before. ;)
Running in theory for me is great. But I'm kind of scared. YES, I did just say I was scared of running. Sparky will be here any minute to kick my ass. I used to get really out of breath from even a short sprint, but since I started the elliptical I don't get short of breath anymore, so I'd hope that wouldn't be a problem.
I feel very uncoordinated when I run, I don't know how else to explain it. I feel like I don't know how to run - therefore, I assume that must not have good form, and I may be at risk for hurting myself. Oh, and I probably look ridiculous too. And the shoes - I've heard you really need to invest ina great pair of running shoes, but I can't really afford that. Plus, I don't want to spend a ton of money on a pair that don't work well for me.

please paula, i know you wanna do me.
i know what you mean about feeling uncoordinated. i'm scared to death of running, even though it's completely irrational. i really enjoy doing it, tho. and i found the other night that my other cardio training really did translate to running; i had a lot more stamina than i would have just starting the program cold. as far as shoes are concerned, they can be expensive, but they don't have to be. if you're concerned about fit, you can go to roadrunnersports.com and go to perfect fit finder down at the bottom - you can put in a bunch of information about your height/weight/how far you usually run, etc, and it will suggest shoes for you. i usually don't want to spend that much on shoes, so i just pay attention to what kind of shoes they suggest and look for those elsewhere for cheaper. i got a great pair at DSW for $40. another option is to go to a shoe store that specializes in running apparel - they're very helpful and can tell you what kind of shoe you need. one of my best friends in HS is a serious runner and she taught me a lot. :D
btw, if you're interested, here (http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml)'s the program i'm doing.

Congrats Carrie!!! You're totally rocking this thing!
I agree on the running, Paula - I know where you're coming from. I feel like absolute sh*t when I run, I get way out of breath - and my lungs just don't like it - running is actually painful to me--even just a little - like last night I ran from my apartment to my apartment gym...and pain. That's not normal...right?
I'm rocking the workouts - 45 minutes of cardio 3 days - then 3 days of 15-30 minutes plus arms or legs...and I usually do abs every other day.
My eating continues to be my weak point, but I'm not doing as bad as I could be considering radio pledge drive means tons and tons of crap to eat...everywhere. So I'm not losing as fast as I wanted - I've come to terms with that.
So my plan now is to keep doing what I'm doing gym wise, tweak my diet a bit to step it up to the next level (still refuse to do the fake meat), and stop hoping for the numbers to show my progress...I'm going to focus on how I feel and how my clothes fit rather than on that stupid scale :D

This is exactly right. People place too much importance on the number their scale tells them when they stand on it. That number includes many sources that comprise your weight...muscle, water, fat, etc. Don't get preoccupied with that number or you'll psyche yourself out and stop exercising/eating right. Don't get discouraged! Throw your scale out .

I'm just gonna have to pick what I think it was and go from there. I think I'm just confusing myself. at any rate, I've lost about 21.5 pounds so far all together. I got a scale yesterday that measures weight, body fat and water weight. I have yet to figure out exactly how it works. it says it sends a "low current" through your body.

Did you try an urgent care center? If your back is still hurting this badly, you may have a disc problem. :( I know it's expensive, but you really need to get checked out. Can't you ask your mom for the money? It's the least she could do, that whore. :p
And don't worry about the weight - you lost a bunch already, you can easily lose it again once you're better. Whatever you do, DO NOT try to exercise until your pain is gone - you could make the injury worse.

i haven't gone to an urgent care place yet ... i really thought it was getting better, until last night. if it doesn't improve by friday, i'll go. yeah, my mother the whore... she has been less than understanding about this. i asked her to bring me some food on her way home from work on monday, and she was like, "FOOD? what kind of food??" she did bring me dinner, but wouldn't help me when i needed to get groceries later. when i told her i took mon-fri off to rest my back, she said, wow, you're going to be broke. when i told her i needed to go to the med center but had no money, she said gee, that's rough. thanks mom.
i'm not going to try to exercise ... i mean, i went for a walk yesterday, but that's all i've done. this lack of exercise on top of my lack of mulah to deal with this sitch is really exacerbating my depression/anxiety issues. i'm having an anxiety attack right now - blah. i'll be ok - i never have severe attacks, it just sucks.

It might seem silly, but I'm pretty damn proud of myself right now. :) In addition to that, I'm continuing with the elliptical on the other days (for a total of 6 days a week with at least 30 minutes of cardio each day), plus abs daily & resistance exercises 3 times a week.
Diet has been good, no major screw-ups & still counting WW points. I've changed to smaller dinner plates - I read that people tend to want to completely fill a plate with food, then eat everything on it. Studies have shown that if you use a smaller plate, it looks like more food & most people eat about 25% less. I weigh myself tomorrow, so we'll see...

Yeah it was much worse when I first started working out again, now it only happens in the last 10 to 15 minutes of my workout. I am going to try the not-so-tight laces - because I do tend to tie the hell out of my shoes...

I know what you mean. I'd love to lose another 10, but realistically I'd be happy with 5. Some of my clothes are literally falling off of me, others that were tight before now fit beautifully.
Currently, I am starving. I came into work an hour earlier & my whole schedule's thrown off. I'm doing well on the gym front - not as great on the diet - but I'm not doing horribly either.
Contrary to the pictures I just posted (where my face looks all weird and fat) I'm starting to slim down a bit - and the part I like best - I'm firming up!! I noticed yesterday that my arms are starting to get more solid - I'm gaining some of my lost muscle back and I am way happy about that.
It's only going to get hard the next month and a half...but as long as I keep up with a good gym routine I'm not going to worry so much about my holiday eating :o

Migraines? I can sympathize. I get killer headaches.
the headaches I suffer (Migraines from absolute hell) are caused by an arachnoid cyst in the right frontal temporal lobe of my brain:
"Your brain swims in three membranes. The first outer layer of the brain is the Dura Mater. The next layer is the arachnoid membrane, called the arachnoid because of it's spider web appearance where cereal spinal fluid flows (the blood of the brain that is basically protein) so neurons can flow from your brain to your spinal cord which also gets blood into the brain through the sub arachnoid space as well as paths to cranial nerves. The Pia Mater is the root of your nervous system (think of the root of a plant) which supplies the brain with blood and connects via the arachnoid trabecula.
When you have a cyst blocking the messages from the brain to the spinal cord and the electric signal doesn't get through properly you may start to notice cognitive, emotional or physical problems. Examples such as getting lost down your street, inexplicable and explosive temper tantrums or dropping a glass. This is age relative and the data for children's reactions is inconclusive. The arachnoid and Pia membranes are the lepomeneges. There are considered a part of connective tissue (the leg bone's connected to the thigh bone the thigh bones connected hip bone the hip bone's connected to your nervous system... you get it, right?) which is why I feel this is, indeed, a connective tissue disorder which is why several of the adults are diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis.
An Arachnoid Cyst is nestled between the Dura and Pia Maters. If you can find a good surgeon you should have laser surgery to completely remove the cyst from your brain however when the cyst is sub-arachnoid they can't go in and cut it out because of the chances of hemmorage and paralyzation. Most conditions involving the Pia mater eventually cause the patient to be paralyzed which is why stem cell research is necessary so hopefully one day they can heal these afflictions.
Where your cyst is depends on which kinds of symptoms you have. Some people remain "asymptomatic" but once you become "symptomatic" your life becomes a living hell. Some people do not suffer from pain at all. I am under the conclusion that Arachnoid Cysts are extremely dangerous to your mental health and general well being because you are always fighting the pain you are in it makes it difficult to control other aspects of your life, such as communicating. These things can cause more ailments such as Multiple Sclerosis, Syringomyelia, auto immune disease and if congenital there could be signs of spinal problems. "
Damn thing is getting worse (Obviously it is growing since the last MRI I had in April of this year) so I have yet another Dr.appt on this Thursday at 9AM...Hopefully something can be done since it appears to be going "symptomatic" and my health is going downhill somewhat (My back is in constant pain 24/7).

Here's some info I found on MSN. Nothing too new, but some good tips:
By Lisa C. Cohn, R.D.
MSNBC contributor
A 40-year-old female patient came to me stressed over her inability to lose weight. As a busy law student she ate on the run, often skipping meals. She wasn't losing weight on 1,200 calories a day. She envied her husband's ability to shed weight more easily.
Another frustrated client found himself 40 pounds overweight after having knee surgery. After getting back into body building and working out, he was having trouble controlling his appetite.
“I am eating more than before — what do I do?" he asked.
Like many of you, these dieters were ignoring a key factor in managing weight: metabolism. Your metabolism, the amount of energy your body uses each day, can determine whether you will be successful in losing weight and keeping it off. Controlling your weight is easier if your metabolism is faster because you can eat more calories. So, is it possible to speed up your metabolism?
Yes, although your metabolism is usually fairly stable, there are several things you can do to help rev it up.
Exercise is No. 1
Working out builds muscle. Muscle speeds metabolism. As the body works more efficiently, it processes food faster and your appetite increases. This is why my client who had been body building was having trouble controlling his hunger.
Men, being the more muscular sex, generally burn more calories than a woman of the same weight. This is why the law student was having a harder time losing weight than her husband.
Don't skip meals
Space meals 3-4 hours apart. That way you have enough energy throughout the day and you'll be free of the headaches, hunger pangs or mood swings you get when you're famished.
Eating erratically signals the body to burn slower and conserve fat. This is why the law student who has been skipping meals is not losing weight on 1,200 calories. She would be better off having smaller, balanced meals and snacks throughout the day.
The way to lose more fat than muscle is to follow a balanced nutrition and exercise plan which promotes an average weight loss rate of 1-2 pounds per week.
Food affects mood
What you eat influences your metabolism and mood, making you either sluggish or energetic. Foods high in sugar, saturated fats, artificial sweeteners and low in water and fiber will slow digestion, can cause weight gain and leave you feeling like a couch potato.
HEALTHY SNACKING
If you get hungry before lunch, try:
— 1 ounce low-fat cheese
— 1 small pear
If you drag in the afternoon, try:
— 1 cup of skim cow or soy milk, a small
bunch of grapes
— 10 almonds, baby carrots
— Stay hydrated. Thirst is often confused with hunger.
Whole grains, vegetables, fruits, beans and legumes, fresh herbs and spices provide the proteins, carbohydrates and fats that give you energy and even blood sugar levels. Healthy fats (olive oil, avocado, fish oils, seeds, nuts, soybeans) promote longer-lasting, stable energy levels. Lean proteins (fish, soy foods, white meat poultry, lean meats and low-fat dairy) offer essential proteins for better digestion and muscle building.
By drinking eight glasses of water each day, you will have better digestion (better emptying of the stomach and intestines, less gas, bloating, constipation) and a flatter tummy. Staying hydrated also reduces headaches and fights fatigue.
You should also get pleasure from eating. Even if adding a piece of dark chocolate is your wish, go for it, one square at a time, as it aids in happy brain chemistry and adds a natural bitter which aids digestion. Improving digestion this way also strengthens the liver, kidneys and lungs, all which facilitate a healthier metabolism.
Stay cool
Colder weather increases metabolism in order to keep the body warm, although it can be a challenge to maintain your weight during the holidays and colder months when exercise levels tend to drop and pounds often pile on.
By keeping indoor temperatures cooler and exercising outdoors, you can burn more calories.
As your metabolism increases, you'll feel more energetic, lighter — and hungrier. But don't worry. As digestion improves, the stomach empties more regularly and you feel thinner in the waistline and less full in the chest. People who have a faster metabolism have fewer food cravings and feel more in control of their eating.
Don't get stuck in a rut
Some dieters get stuck at a certain weight. To keep your weight from plateauing, you must make small changes to keep your body from adapting to a routine of eating the same amount of calories.
If you can't lose those last five pounds, add a couple hundred calories more a day for two weeks and then return to a lesser amount. Over time this strategy will allow you to increase the amount of calories you can eat and continue to lose weight.
Be patient
It may take you some time to increase your metabolism — three months is a reasonable timeframe to expect to see changes. If you are having a hard time losing weight, you might consider having your metabolism tested by a professional nutritionist.
The key is to be persistent, have confidence and be patient.
Soon you will feel healthier and stronger, and in time you will see the results of a toned, healthier body. Best of all, you will have a clearer understanding of what makes your body feel and work better, so you will be able to more effectively control your weight for years to come.
Both my law student and body builder clients achieved results this way.
A regular routine of having easy meals and snacks on hand and spreading her calorie intake throughout the day gave the lawyer-to-be increased, longer-lasting energy levels.
And the body builder lost weight by eating more regular, balanced meals and including more whole grain, fruits, vegetables and healthy fats into his snacking routine.

^ I'm starting off small. Let's see if I can handle this one first, then I'll debate one with more memory.
I ended up getting it on Amazon - about the same price as Walmart, plus I got approved for their Visa so it's $30 off!

Shhh!! Don't mention Wal-Mart...it's my one big hypocrisy in life ;)
Yeah - Amazon is pretty comparable...and the Amazon visa - a couple of friends have it - it's a great card

Hey - does anyone watch The Biggest Loser? I happened to catch a few reruns on Bravo & I'm hooked. I loved when the people showed up from home & had lost more weight. Shows you that you don't need a nutritionist & personal trainer, you really CAN do it on your own, no matter where you live or how much money you have.
It's really inspiring.
I've watched all three seasons of The Biggest Loser. It's a great show, but my God do they have some ****y broads this year. Kai is the worst of course. I don't like Heather much, either. Erik annoys me also. He's a big whiny baby that should have been voted off a long time ago. Hmmm. Come to think of it, I don't like anybody this season. I would like to see one of the people that didn't start out in the house win, though. Show those personal trainers that you can do it without them.

^ ITA. I'm really rooting for that college chick who came back from home.
I liked Pam OK, but the other broads bug - Kai especially. OMG, when they brought the people back from home? And she started her "Um no, uh-uh, no, I don't think so, nope, no, mm-mm, no, no way, no, uh-uh" I wanted to beat her throught the television.

There have been so many instances when I wanted to beat her through the television - to the point where I had to stop watching  I seriously loathe her.
I really can't say that any of the other girls annoyed me -nor did any of the men - pretty much it was all Kai. Stupid whore Kai.

still going strong. I'm kicking up my exercise routine to run a little longer. I'm walking/running at least 2.2 miles and doing weights 3 times a week. I've lost 1.6 pounds...even after not doing so great over the weekend. 9.4 to go by end of the year and then another 10 by March and I will be at my goal! :blob2:

I kicked my ass at the gym this weekend so I feel great. Although I otherwise didn't do a damn thing.
