Me too! I had some of the best workouts yet this weekend  And this morning - I almost got lazy and didn't go - but I made myself - did another 45 minutes of cardio :D
I'm definitely feeling the results - and I am down 2 pounds since leaving WW and stepping up the gym-going :p

I don't know how many of you are doing squats, but lemme tell ya. they work. my ass has gotten so tight and in shape, it's insane. even my undergarments (I hate the word underwear) fit better.
as an update on my routine, here's what I do.
diet:
breakfast - some sort of Kashi protein bar
snack - small bag of pork skins or apple and peanut butter
lunch - some sort of Lean Cuisine, Healthy Choice, etc.
snack - small bag of pork skins or some type of fruit
dinner - sandwich and small bag of chips or another frozen healthy meal or soup or chicken and salad
late snack - one piece of dark chocolate (not every day)
exercise:
arms, chest, back, legs, butt - 3 times a week
cardio - 4-5 times a week
yoga/pilates/flexibility training - 1-2 times a week
fyi, my current cardio program is walk at 4.0 for 5 minutes, run at 5.0 for 2 minutes, walk at 4.0 for 2 minutes, run at 6.0 for 2 minutes, walk at 4.0 for 2 minutes, run at 5.0 for 2 minutes, walk at 4.0 for 2 minutes, run at 6.0 for 2 minutes, walk at 4.0 for 2 minutes, run at 5.0 for 2 minutes, walk at 3.7 until I reach 2.5 miles - it's a variation on the Couch to 5K's Week Two plan.

i still have range of motion issues, but for the most part i don't have any pain doing normal activities.
my mom asked me to carry a 60-pound air conditioner down to the garage the other day, and i really paid for it in the days after. that is NOT a "normal activity"!
i think i can start doing core exercises again, hopefully that will help.

On week 4 of the "couch to 5K." It's going well - the weather here's been really nice so I don't really have an excuse not to go out & run. Still doing the elliptical the other 2 days, so 30 minutes of cardio 5 days a week. Plus the weight resistance excercises 3 days a week.
The diet hasn't exactly been blown, but I haven't counted points in about 2 weeks. I'm up another pound, but I still feel great & clothes are fine. Oh, and at my MD appointment last week, they said I'd lost about 6 pounds since last year! So there's definitely progress.
As of today I'm starting point counting again, and I think I'll increase my elliptical time to 45 minutes & see what happens.

My "fat pants" don't fit anymore :blob1:
I tried them on yesterday because I thought they'd look good with a sweater - I can easily pull them on and off without undoing the zipper or buttons...they will no longer stay up by themselves :blob2:
Yea!!! I'm way excited...I won't try on my jeans yet...don't think I'm quite there...but by Christmas..I'll totally be wearing them

a couple of cool links I found:
http://www.bravotv.com/Work_Out/tips//index.shtml
http://www.stewsmith.com/linkpages/usnasummerseminar.htm
I have had to stop wearing most of the pants I was wearing. you know how Stacy and Clinton (on What Not To Wear) are always saying if you don't wear clothes that fit you look bigger? well, it's true. I have been wearing things I haven't worn in about a year. 10 pounds by Xmas seems easy, but lord it's like I'm losing a pound a week. luckily, even though I haven't lost any this week, I managed to hold steady over Thanksgiving.

Thanks for those links. I lost a pound over Thanksgiving. I seriously think my body is shcizo.
I've been wondering, does anyone know about the 85% heart rate thing? How bad is it to work out at like 90%? My heart rate is usually pretty high while working out but it freaks me out because I'm not sure how safe that is.

Well, I've seriously fallen off the wagon.
I had to break down and buy new pants, even though I had been refusing to buy "fat clothes." Mine had started to develop holes in rather unseemly places and were no longer fit to wear to work.
Now, I have never before worn pants that were bigger than a 32 waist; imagine my dismay when I went to try them on and discovered that I need a 36! And I weighed 173 the other day!! Pls. keep in mind, I am only 5'5".
I've cut up my debit card and am not carrying cash so I won't be able to go grab fast food on my lunch break now, even if I try.

I haven't seen it. But the filmmaker ate nothing but fast food for a month, gained a bunch of weight, felt like crap... Plus they did some experiments with the food and some revealing of what is really in it. I don't think it will turn you off of food altogether but alot of people said they would never eat fast food again after watching the movie.

I'm easily traumatized. When I was 8 years old, my grandmother made me watch that TV movie with Bernadette Peters where she plays the mother of the little boy whose dad took him to a motel and set the room on fire. I was scared to take a bath for a year after that. :distress:

it's hard to wake up one day and realize that you've gained weight. and it seems like it happens overnight. but, in the end, it really does come down to how determined you are. you have to make up your mind to do it. once you make it through 2 weeks or so and get into a good routine, it's just keeping it up. you can do it.
Super Size Me - watch it. it will really make you think about fast food.
if I can help you in any way, let me know.

yep. he gained like 10 pounds in a week or something.
I do wonder though if Morgan was vegetarian or strict eater before this. I know he was in good shape and his fiance is vegan or maybe vegetarian so I'm sure the fast food really shocked his body.
but when he was in the car eating a big mac I think and he got sick...that's some serious ****. the reason we don't all get that sick is because we're probably used to all the crap that's in them.

suze, you shouldn't be doing a sustained cardio workout at a very high heartrate. if you're going fast enough that you can't talk comfortably talk while you're doing it, it's not healthy.

what's your actual heart rate at 90%?
I think it's 165ish.
On edit: I just used Jazzy's calculator from his first link which adjusts for a higher resting heart rate. It shows 178 as my 85% which helps explain my confusion. So 165 for me isn't crazy high I guess. Phew.

that doesn't sound unhealthy - when i was working out at the gym, that's where i would try to stay when i was doing cardio. i've read that you should stay between 60% and 90% ... so you should be fine! :wavey:

f*ck.
i need a f*cking kick in the pants. i have been so depressed this month. not just a seasonal malaise, it's been worse than that. i was doing so well with diet & exercise, and then i couldn't exercise when i hurt my back. now i feel like i have had a total emotional crash. i don't want to get out of bed, i don't want to leave my house, i don't want to deal with the necessities of life. my social anxiety has gotten so bad that my friends only see me if they visit me at work. they don't really understand ... i mean, they're understanding, but they don't get it. the other day i agreed to go to target with my friend, but i told her i had to be home by five. what happens at five? nothing, i just couldn't handle being out longer than that. i dunno what's going on. i have anxiety before i go into work. it's not an anxiety attack, per se, but my heart starts racing and i become really withdrawn ... which is a difficult state to go into work in.
i know i just need to pick myself up like i did when i first started with diet & exercise, but i wanted to share my bull****.

yeah, this has happened before ... i've been dealing with severe depression for about 10 years now. i used to just live with it ... i'd go through periods where it would naturally lighten but it would eventually come back. once i started exercising regularly my mood really leveled out, so now i can pretty much control it. but it's hard because all i wanna do is pull the covers over my head. when i hurt my back, i actually kind of prepared myself mentally for something like this ... i knew it was mostly the exercise that was keeping me at even keel.

my mom used to say "wouldn't you just feel better if you'd lose some weight? don't you think you're overweight? etc." ... i was 9, and i wasn't even overweight! i've always been large-framed. the kids at school were mean, tho, so it was extra nice to get it from mom. ugh.

Mostly I've been lucky on the family side (aside from the unlce who nicknamed me ugly as a child.) But two of my aunts and one cousin had eating disorders, and rather than continuing that trend they really seemed to try and build a healthy body image with me...telling me I wasn't fat etc..
And when I lost a bunch of weight and firmed up my last year in college my grandma FREAKED out...said I was too thin etc....so it usually goes the other way in my family...though the fact that my grandma has not been harassing me about how skinny I am means that I am, in fact, over weight

of course they did. if you're not too fat then you must be too thin. you're never "ok" - mine did the same thing.

Wow. You guys have some f*cked up families. Mine's nowhere near normal either, but I was never made to feel that I was fat or unattractive. That's awful, and just goes to show how your upbringing really affects you for the rest of your life.
Did you guys see the Biggest Loser last night? That whiny girl got kicked off, so I didn't mind cuz she annoyed me. But I felt awful for her - she had lost a total of 60something pounds, yet she was upset because she hadn't gotten below 160. It's sad that for some of us, nothing will ever be quite good enough. What she accomplished was so amazing, but all she could focus on were the 2 more pounds she needed to get below 160. :(

so true. my family is reason numero uno why I am so obsessed with appearance and how I look and why I always think that no one will "love" me if I'm not perfect...I like to think that I am fine inside and out, but there's always that voice in my head. "you look so stupid in that" or "that makes you look fat" or "where are the husky jeans?"
I remember like it was yesterday my grandma taking me to a high-end store to get some jeans and she loudly asked where the husky section was. well, once I tried them on I had to come out in front of the sales folk while she poked and prodded and checked the waist to see if it was too tight, etc. talk about embarassed.

Yup...what happens in our upbringing often stays with us. Of course like I said, it wasn't so much family for me BUT I just remembered...my mom took me to this doctor...it was free on-campus health care for faculty and their families.
I remember this doctor because I went there because my mom was afraid I had Strep throat - he came in and said, "well you're daughter is fat and will only get fatter unless you do something.." I was so NOT fat...when I look at pictures..I was just fine - but at that time I felt like a huge blimp...
The doctor gave no advice on health or diet - just said told me I was fat :distress:
He's no longer there...he got canned after refusing to treat a gay man and then he was quoted in the paper as saying gays are just more apt to disease so why treat them....asshole.

Just solid  what every little girl dreams of hearing. My mom once took me to my aunt's work so my aunt could lecture me on how not fat I was...I wouldn't listen.
This was before the doctor fiasco. I do wonder - my mom never criticized my looks, nor did my sister or other relatives (except for the uncle who called me "ugly") So I often wonder where the hang-up of being fat came from - as far back as I can remember I've thought I was fat....
And even though when I look at pics now I wasn't...I was always called fat by boys and such...
Childhood sucks.

It sounds like I was very lucky I was skinny. But I always knew that and thanked God for it. My last name would not work well if I were a heavy child. Oy. But after puberty that gift of metabolism went the way of the honey bee and I've had pretty serious body image issues since. My grandfather's a beaut, a couple of years ago he told me I'd put on A LOT of weight. Um, no kidding.
Oh yeah, in second grade some kid said really loud just about yelling, "Susan ____, she's a dog!" Then I thought I was ugly. Weird huh? Kids really suck. So I didn't have the fat thing but the ugly thing, yeah.

But today this gal at work (it's been a bad day at work) looks at some pictures I have on my desk of me with various NPR hosts...she says, "Ooh look how skinny you were..." But she doesn't stop there...she starts the "oh we should join the porker club.." or something (she's not at all heavy)...

My god. All you people's stories. :( :distress: It's so sad. When I got in shape to my normal weight around age 19-21, which was about 5-10 lbs less than my previous weight, my mom asked me if I was anorexic (I weighed 133, am 5'3", and was obviously muscular). Then my grandma expressed similar concerns. She was all "are you eating enough sweetie?". When i was growing up my family always said the best figures had shape and were muscly, therefore I had the best shape. And my dad occasionally called people "bone legs" or "bony" or "no shape, just bony". No one was pretty if they didn't have enough shape. Also, no one in my family ever went on a diet, or talked about people's weight. (except the occasional "bony" or "noodle-flabby" comment by my dad). I guess all my family has good figures, though. But they would get heavy, my mom and uncle. No one cared, I guess, and they still played sports.
I didn't know people's families were like that. I knew kids in school were like that, though, due to my nickname of bubble butt, but at the time I took it as a compliment, b/c of how my family said flat butts are not cool.
My point? Everyone's family should be Italian. No, not really, I just can't believe the stories. Parents/family who are lost, and taking their children with them...:( My family didn't talk about looks much at all, just, I guess, talents. But they were all pretty exceptionally attractive, too. I'm the ugliest.
God, I didn't realize how it could have been, I'll have to go back and thank them...Poor Jazzy....:xoxo: Good thing in actuality you are so attractive...

That always cracks me up. You're the one with the issues that just came out of nowhere. Denial is not a river in Egypt!
My Mom didn't do that but she criticized me often in private yet bragged about me to others. Then once in a while they'd tell me and I'd be thinking, "Why can't she tell me that?"
We recently got into a pretty good fight which has made me, once again, limit my time with her. It was over the fact that she doesn't care for her emotional health. I guess to her I sound like Ms Harpy because she absolutely does not want to deal with her issues. She's normal after all! And I'm sure she is, but that doesn't mean she doesn't have issues.

my grandma used to always tell me "when you grow up you won't ever come see me. you'll forget me and I'll be alone" and I'd always say "no I won't, I love you and I'll come see you" - so, of course now that I'm grown and have responsibility I don't really get to see her as much as I'd like so every chance she gets she tells me about all the times she told me that and in an "I told you so" way. makes me feel like poo. but no one seems to mention the fact that she comes here to see my aunt and never bothers to call me and let me know she's in town.

Oh yeah, and tell your grandmother if she were loving and nurturing you would happily go see her but since she isn't she can go sh*t in her hat! Don't feel guilty she's a pill. Actually...I've been meaning to update in here.
Not going as strictly on the diet side (and I've still yet to read the "8 Weeks..." book that is sitting by my bed...)
But I don't have to be as strict when I'm working out everyday, which I am. Well, again, only 5 days. Because I'm trying to LOSE weight rather than maintain I've upped my cardio to 45 minutes...and on days when I do weights I do more than my traditional 10 minute cardio warm-up....so all around the workouts are longer and more intense.
So far so good - though numbers wise I'm not down a lot I've got two pairs of pants (regular ones, not my "fat pants") that are not fitting so good - I had to use a safety pin yesterday to fold over the waist on one pair
So it's going well - this season has been a bitch with all the damn candy and cakes and cinnamon buns people are bringing in - but it't the holiday season and I'm exercising so I'm not goign to beat myself up for eating a piece of cake :o

Seriously. The way I say it I'd rather be dead than never eat anything I love anymore.
Right. I couldn't handle it  I can't live my life not having a damn piece of pizza when I want it ---but it's the learning that I can have one or two slices - I don't have to eat half the pizza in one sitting....
That's the thing - teaching myself moderation...it's not that I didn't KNOW the half a pizza was unhealthy - I'm not an idiot (contrary to what others believe) but it's a compulsion.
And it turns out the roots go back to my childhood - I've always had a really weird hang up about food - and this fear that I wouldn't get enough. I don't know where it came from as I never remember a time growing up when I went hungry....but the fear has always been there...so I over-compensate eating more than I should....I'm still working on figuring out where this came from in my life.
And there's the ever-popular stress and emotional eating of which I've always been a big practitioner  That one has been easier to fight actually....
And, of course, the exercise really really helps. It's also helped my way of thinking...like after a good workout I don't want to undo it all by eating some huge gross meal...I want something good that will nourish my body etc...
so that shift in attitude has been a welcomed thing in my life.

I've been slacking in both departments for about 5 or 6 days. It doesn't take long to make you feel sluggish & gross. We've been offsite doing flu shot clinics at work, which means I have to eat the prepackaged lunch they give us - at 11am. I hate it. This is totally screwing with my eating schedule, not to mention working extra early &/or late is not helping me get in much exercise. Blergh. Tomorrow's the last day, and I'm exhausted.

way to go Lisa. that's awesome.
the good thing about working out regularly is that you can eat those bad things once in a while, but your metabolism is so wound up, it just looks at that whopper and laughs.

Keeping the thread alive, baby! Say, where's Jaz been? Busy with the holidays I s'pose.
How are you guys doing? It's tougher for me this time of year, since I bake a lot (cookies, that is :D ) and I'm usually too busy to plan & cook good healthy meals. But I'm still watching portions & continuing to work out regularly. I weighed myself today, after 2 weeks of not doing so, and I haven't gained any weight! :blob1: I'm thrilled just to maintin until the holiodays are over.
The only crappy thing is that the weather here's been crazy - it's warmer than normal but very windy & rainy most mornings, so I haven't run at all. Just the elliptical (I'm up to 40 minutes 5 days a week) and light weights.

I lost 2 more pounds. I think, I never trust it until I weigh that number for a week. The weight training is really paying off. I'm getting strong. The fat in my upper arm is almost gone. I'm so excited about that! My bra is looser. Dammit. There's a downside to everything, eh?
I'm doing my baking tonite. I'm making fudge, holiday M&M cookies, and chocolate peanut butter bars. Oh yes I am.

I'm just doing the workouts for the time being. I am not really watching what I eat - it's the holidays, I've got a birthday coming up -I'm gonna freaking have my cake and eat it too...
But because of my workouts I've not gained any weight :D Like Paula said I'm perfectly happy to maintain until after Christmas.
And I don't make New Year's resolutions - but I don't know what else to call this (a plan maybe?)
But at the start of the year I plan on reading 8 Weeks to Optimum health (if I start reading it now I won't implement crap from it) so I'm looking forward to that

Cool. There's a great article in O magazine (Jan issue) about why it is so hard to change our habits. It's a great read and really helps you let up on yourself. We're hard-wired to be smoking, drinking, binging fiends! Well, sort of. Basically it comes down to the fact that you won't do anything unless there is an immediate reward in it. So you have to figure out how to reward yourself for "good" behavior. Also that scientists are pretty near finding that food does act like a drug in your brain. So the compulsion to eat is much like the compulsion to shoot up. I highly recommend this article to everyone!

I'll have to check that out!! I'm really looking forward to reading Dr. Weil's book...but as a true creature of habit I know it's going to require all of my attention, which is why I've put it off until the first of the year....
I'm really pleased that I've been keeping up with the workouts - and honestly I'm not at all down on myself for the lack of über health eating - it's the holiday season and I love the foods that are part of that....:D In fact my sister is making me a real Hershey's chocolate cake for my birthday...I can't freakin' wait

cool ... my mom just bought that & told me about the article. i'll have to read it!
here's a cute article i read today, from http://www.timesonline.co.uk/newspaper/0,,174-2491892,00.html :
I am fat. I even edge into being clinically obese — by the BMI calculation of dividing my weight by my height squared. Yet into this squared pigeonhole, this round and roly-poly peg refuses to be squished. Because what it says on paper is not the truth of who I am: I am no couch potato, no blob, no wobble-butt or lardarse. I do not overflow from my seat on aeroplanes — nor do my cholesterol levels or blood pressure in any way fit the profile of an obese person.
The news this week that fat women benefit more from exercise than from diet is no revelation to me. If you didn’t know what I looked like, my weekly exercise diary would read almost like Demi Moore’s . . . two hours sweating around West London with a personal trainer, an hour-and-a-half session of Pilates, an hour of hilariously bad tennis and, in between, an obsession with bicycling everywhere. I don’t do this to sweat off the calories, I do it to keep fit and healthy and to justify eating. When I ski, I out-ski everyone I’m with, skiing harder, bumpier, higher, longer (notice I don’t say that about the tennis). As one friend put it, as she saw me picking up not one but three children to carry them across a stream last summer, “you are scarily strong”.
So I am fit, healthy and fat. I am also, when the clothes, make-up and lighting have all come together, confidently fat and sexy. I follow fashion, not the fashion of midriff-baring or the minidresses of skinny minnies, nor the fascism that masquerades as fashion for fat people – the kaftans, three-quarter sleeves and elasticated waists — but a cherry-picking of those trends that suit me. I can look fairly good with clothes on — and exponentially better without. I am the opposite of an anorexic: they look in the mirror and see a fat person; this fat person looks in the mirror and sees only perfect curves and a marvellous bosom. But there is no getting away from the fact that I am fat — and nor do I need to. It is the self-love that dare not speak its name.
There are a few of us self-lovers about but society is, at best, ambivalent. After all, no one wants to be too different. My confidence even begins to wobble towards the defensive when faced by celebrities such as Nigella Lawson and Charlotte Church who, first lauded by the press for their womanly curvaceousness, are then praised even more when they “slim down”. But I’m going to stick to my buns on this one. I may actually be fat, but every woman I know thinks that she is fat. Even the friend who hasn’t a spare inch to pinch anywhere on her body is plagued with body issues — and desperate to find the perfect diet. So I’m not so different after all — I’m meant to think I’m fat — with the only deviation being that I’m going to be less tortured about it. It’s a funny thing, being fat and fancy-free. I was at a series of workshops recently, run for the store managers of a chain of shops that sell women’s clothes in sizes 16-26 (I hover between 16/18 for trousers and 20 for tops), and the word “fat” was not mentioned for the first two days. When I josh about being fat, I watch people’s reactions: watch the struggle between pity and admiration that I could be so frank. When I go running with my personal trainer, who isn’t exactly rake-thin herself, I chuckle at the confusion on the faces of passers-by. “Two fat birds! And look at them go!” The greatest tease was when I had naked pictures of myself taken as a present for my husband’s 40th birthday: even my closest friends were astonished at my blatant — even brazen — acceptance of my body.
As Ogden Nash put it: “I am constantly in/The mood/for food.” For me, food is not about pigging out on deep-fried Mars bars and living in McDonald’s, but a reverence for food that is fresh, wholesome and, yes, probably a bit naughty. So for me, Christmas lunch will be about lingering over the voluptuous curve of the turkey’s breast; sinking my teeth into a well-cooked sprout; lolling in the lambent glow of a golden roast potato — oh, that delicious surrender as crunch gives way to velvety softness — and luxuriating in the tart little tingle of an occasional lick of cranberry sauce. Champagne will be dealt with greedily. Brandy butter will be stroked on to that mouthwatering tangle of fruit and naughty bits known as Christmas pudding. This isn’t just food, this is guilt-free food.
After Christmas and New Year, I will not, therefore, be going on a diet. I may well have put on (more) weight but, unlike the majority of the female population (an estimated 12½ million Brits are trying to diet), I will not be scanning the bookshelves and the health and lifestyle sections of the newspapers for This Year’s Way to Lose Weight. I may be a devoted follower of fashion, but I am beyond fashion when it comes to diets. Why would I want to sign up for weeks of deprivation, expensive and exhausting detox, or the tyranny and self-obsessiveness of examining the few morsels I am allowed to put into my body and analysing their ability to make me thin? Why suffer the side-effects of bad breath and bad temper? Not to mention the inability to think about anything else other than food? I love food — why should I suddenly have to hate it?
I won’t be going on a diet because I know something that you all secretly know too: dieting makes you fat.
More accurately, it makes you fat and makes me fatter. If you diet — in the modern sense of the word — you will, when you stop “dieting”, put on weight. It was something I always suspected from looking at my own history and those around me — my mother has spent most of her life on one diet or another and hates her figure more now than she ever did — but it was only when I was researching my book, Fat So?, which started off as an anthology of diets and ended up a crusade against its very subject, that I put flesh on to the bones of that basic observation.
In a study of the survivors of the two years of famine in the Warsaw Ghetto of the Second World War, the truth was there in the starkest possible way. Of those survivors (nearly all of whom had also gone through the starvation of the concentration camps), most became markedly fat after the war — flabby, with devastated muscle tone. Scientists worked out that, for years, these men and women had an average daily calorie intake of between 700 and 800, suffering a daily deficit of 1,700 calories. Faced with so little coming in, their bodies went into famine mode, secreting fat stores and eating into muscle tissue instead. Once their diet went back to normal, their bodies did not replace the burnt muscle tissue but, assuming that starvation might happen again any minute, shunted any surplus calories straight into fat cells. What was true for the Polish Jews is true for us. Crash-diet in January? Don’t do it, because as soon as you resume normal — or even sensible — eating, your body has the same reaction: stashing the stuff straight into fat cells because who knows when that starvation routine is going to happen again. As the comedienne Rita Rudner said: “It takes six months to get in shape and two weeks to get out of shape. As soon as you know this, you can stop being angry about other things in life and only be angry about this.”
There’s even worse news. So primeval are we that, if we go on a serious diet, we waken the primitive beast that is our “fat memory”. While we spend our entire lives struggling to reach our “ideal weight” — the thinnest we’ve ever been or the “thin memory” of what we used to weigh as teenagers or pre-babies — our body has a different agenda. Its “fat memory” is a different animal and is programmed to get us back to the highest weight we have ever been — as a caveman’s survival mechanism to keep the body in a state of readiness for any more famine. These days, with abundant food, ever-increasing portion-size (yes, that’s you, burger chains, with your doubled and tripled Big Macs and Whoppers) and yo-yo dieting, our fat “thermostat” gets set artificially high, so the body stores fat above and beyond a caveman’s dreams. The really shocking news — you may want to stick your fingers in your ears here and sing “La! La! La! Can’t hear you!” — is that the sadistic bastards who worked out the “fat memory” explanation tell us that once this has happened — once we’ve got a bit fat, dieted furiously to take it off and then got fatter afterwards as a consequence — it takes the body upwards of 20 years to reset that thermostat and “forget”.
I was put on my first diet by my mother when I was 12 and stopped dieting about ten years ago. Since I am now nearly 38, on the 20-year “fat memory” timetable I will be 48 before I can undo the damage done by that first diet. Thinking about this — or, indeed, any of the thousands of other diet theories that heckle us through life — is enough to make one crawl under the duvet and frogmarch through a few Flakes. But I won’t. I’m fat. So what? I last longer when tossed into the Arctic Ocean and, in the meantime, I like my eating life — unlike my friends, who dread every dinner invitation, business lunch or children’s birthday party.
So I shall not be lard-butting my way through the festive season. I will be as active as possible (perhaps not the full 18-mile hike required to work off the calories consumed at an average Christmas lunch, but exercise will be taken) and I will choose my food carefully for a mood-enhancing mixture of nutritional goodness and pure pleasure — a little of what you fancy does you good. I love my food and I love my body — why should the two be mutually exclusive? At one end of the scale is the old maxim of “Eat less, exercise more”, but we all know that’s true (as Edina says in Absolutely Fabulous: “Sweetie, if it was that easy, everybody would be doing it”) so I won’t insult your intelligence and I will step to the other end. This is where we can celebrate food — the freshness, the deliciousness of home-cooking, the news that red wine, avocados, olive oil, even chocolate, are not all bad — and celebrate living.
Let’s eliminate our excessive use of dairy, refined sugar, processed flour. Do you know why we like these foods in the first place? Because we’re snobs and show-offs. It’s all a con, the “haute cuisine” of fancy food based on meat, cream, cheese, sweetness: a legacy from the Age of Enlightenment (and Enfattenment) when the emerging middle classes of the 17th and 18th centuries had less to fear from famine and plague and had a more assured food supply.
Rich food — involving long processes and using expensive new imports such as sugar — was just one more way to show off their riches; so why do we still hold up as a “treat” a way of eating that is unnatural, unbalanced and founded on mere prosperity? The day we realise that brown rice is simply more delicious than white is still perhaps a way off, but the first thing we must all to do is to throw away the meal-for-one, steer clear of fast-food joints and sandwich shops, get back in to the kitchen and start enjoying food that is then enjoyed by our bodies. Bon appetit – now you can have a very happy Christmas.

That article is great. I wish I could permanently shift my mind to that kind of thinking but I seem to flip flop on it. Although right now I'm happy with my size and shape for the most part. Although by the fashion media standards I'm the size of a plus sized model (10). Seriously, it is frigging rediculous.
I don't know why designers do that with sizes. They take the size 3 and then use that as a blueprint for all sizes. Well hello? That is just not how real women are proportioned. Dumbass.
I have an ample bottom and decided long ago that I will buy myself expensive jeans because they're the only ones that really fit. The cheap ones are never cut right.
Oh yeah, Carrie, having cute exercise clothes really does help at the gym. I had some pretty heinous stuff and one day was wearing my worst when I saw someone I know. I was so mortified. Fortunately I saw him again last week in my cute clothes. Hehe. :)
I don't think bigger bodies are less attractive than smaller ones. I really don't. I am super hard on myself though and usually not so much with others. I think my mindset is very different from most American women. Still, I would like to have a healthier body-image for sure. I have worked on this issue for a very long time though, it's really hard.
And elastic waist bands are the worst. The manufacturer always skimps on the elastic so it just cuts into you. How is that flattering? Or comfortable? It just isn't.

I just bought a pair of Ann Taylor Loft jeans that fit like a glove and now people can really tell I've lost weight wearing jeans that fit! i agree with you - smaller bodies aren't more attractive by virtue of being smaller, it's all about dressing them properly, which is something most designers don't understand. if you look at most plus sections, you find tents and long, flowing fabrics and **** nobody wants to wear. it's actually a big motivator for me to lose weight. nobody looks good in that ****. designers need to get it through their thick skulls that larger women have no reason to be ashamed of their bodies, and they don't want it covered up in layers and layers of fabric. ugh.
I really enjoyed the article Carrie posted! It makes some good points that people usually ignore
And Carrie, you make an excellent point about smaller bodies not necessarily being more attractive! I know a lot of not-so-thin women who are actually more attractive than they would be if they were thinner. I especially hate the looks of those women who are not supposed to be very thin(I mean that their body was not actually built to be that way) and they just look starved to death. (I know, because -I hate to admit that-I went through that phase a couple of years ago  ).
Now I am just your typical mediterrenean woman: thin from the waist up, big ass& thighs and normal legs:rolleyes:

No fitness for me this week - but lots of food. THough actually I'm quite proud of myself - usually I just throw caution to the wind on "travel days" and eat any and all crap I pick up at gas stations, I eat fast food etc..NONE of that yesterday.
I stopped at a Subway and got one of the 6gram sandwiches..NO chips...and drank lots of water, no candy...yea!
Of course now that I'm IN New MExico it's all gonna go to hell since my sister makes the best Chocolate Chip cookies known to man....not to mention these to die for Candy Cane cookies :D

I'm very hard on myself about not making huge gains in my exercise and such. But when I think back, I just started weight training last year and was only doing upper body. Now I do my whole body. I could only military press 10lbs and am now up to 30 and up on all other weights as well. I do 30 min of cardio fairly comfortably as opposed to 20 min of really having to push. So I guess when I look at the big picture I've come a long way. Oh yeah, plus I've lost 12 lbs and a size. I think it was focusing on small changes that helped me. Every month or two adding weights, or new machines. Etc. I hope I can keep it up for '07 because I am feeling really confident right now and it is so cool.

Etc. I hope I can keep it up for '07 because I am feeling really confident right now and it is so cool.
that's awesome that you're feeling so confident! woo suze! you really do have to focus on overall change over time because it's so easy to get bogged down and feel as if you're in a rut.
oh, i don't know why that clip is stopping at :58, it's working for me. essentially, mary jo and julia are telling suzanne she should shop at those "big and beautiful" stores, and suzanne finally says "i know i've put on a little weight, but you all are actin' like i should be buyin' fabric from georgia tent and awning!" i love that show, especially that episode, which addressed delta burke's weight gain.

absolutely. i love delta burke. i think it's awesome that after she lost the weight, she still refused to patronize designers who didn't offer clothing in her heavier size. and i think her own clothing line is still doing quite well, too.

Well over the (almost) two weeks of holiday time - I only worked out once. My yesterday I felt it. I was lethargic, depressed and felt huge...I'd already been feeling crappy last week - it hit full force yesterday - but this morning - being a new year and all - I got out of bed and hopped right over to the gym. I am already feeling tons better...this is going to be a good year for me fitness wise - I can feel it

Yeah, day 1 of my "back on track" plan & I woke up too late to exercise before work. Figures. I was able to squeeze in a quick walk with the dog before I left, but that's it. I plan on hitting the elliptical tonight.
BTW - I screwed up my right arm lifting weights. I was using 8 pound hand weights, which is apparently fine for biceps & even triceps, but not deltoids. The doc at work looked at me like I was insane when I told her. So, due to arm & shoulder pain , I have to really be careful for a while. I'm hoping I didn't actually tear the rotater cuff, just a strain. It's getting better slowly, so we'll see. I'll be running out to pick up some 3 pound weights this week. :D

Day two of 2007 - went to the gym. I'm doing good
I'm now just waiting for the mad influx of people to arrive at the gym - which will most likely piss me off. The only bright side is they'll all go away within a month and us regulars can reclaim our territory
We have a nice rythym going now with apartment gym regulars...once in a while a stray gym goer screws things up - but it's mostly fine...
Of course I'm already two days behind the start of reading 8 weeks to optimum health....but it's still on my agenda

I got everything done except my lateral abdominal muscles. Big whoop. I hope the newbies have already quit! That's terrible. Okay, some of them.

I've been pretty static...no gain, no loss.
I watched YOU: On A Diet last night and thought about what they talked about all night and this morning I was reading the paper and their book is number one. kinda odd...anyway, their whole thing is to focus on waist and not weight. they say men should be at 35 inches or less and women should be at 32.5 or less to be healthy. they also say if a product has more than 4g of sugar per serving don't eat it. if a product has any type of enriched flour or hydrogenated anything in the first 4 ingredients, don't eat it. I read a ****load about them today, but it's all so confusing. I'm just gonna stick to what I've been doing cause it works. I got The Firm Fat Burning Cardio with resistance band for Xmas that I've been using. I also got a juicer that I'm gonna start using. I only have about 20 pounds left to go! yay. How weird, I was just reading all about that on Oprah.com last night. I mean, I've also seen him on her show before, but only once or twice. I didn't think it was confusing cause I read a thing that said "five foods to drop out of your diet blah blah" and they were just basically sugar, high fructose corn syrup (no more than 4 g. of sugar, like you said) and then anything white. White flour, potatoes, something, chips. Hydrogenated oil. Which of course I already knew. It's hella hard to not eat sugar and white flour, but not impossible. Did you see the thing about psyllium seed husks in smoothies? They are fibrous and fill you up. I guess I'm pretty practiced at reading labels and figuring out bad ingredients already.
Anywhoo, you look great, I could see the difference in your face. If you only have 20 lbs left, that is awesome! Sounds like whatever you are doing is working pretty well. I have an end of March goal for my 15 lbs, too, but of course that is 'cause of Vegas....:D I have an absolute goal of summer, naturally - what with my friend and her big new boobs, tummy tuck, and size 2 legs...:p (I know, I'm shallow. I'm supposed to be getting a free membership to the gym here as a perk for being employed by the reacreation dept. as a CPR instructor. They're supposed to be getting more cardio equipment & expanding, so here's hoping - I often had to wait for a machine before because it was so crowded.
woohoo! sweet shiz.

is it a resp. illness? that sucks, when you're sick, and you know you can normally go much longer, but your lungs/whatever hold you back. hope you feel better soon.

^ Yeah, pretty much. It started as a random odd cough, then Thursday I felt like hell - headache, cough, post nasal drip, really sore throat. By Sat I was feeling a bit better, then yesterday I lost my voice.
This morning I still had a sore throat, laryngitis & some shortness of breath along with the annoying throat clearing/cough. I'm OK, I sound worse than I feel. Now it's more annoying than anything.
Salt water gargles, green tea & honey, extra Vitamin C, lots of water, trying to rest.

Hell at least you got SOME cardio in - when I'm sick I don't do ****. Nothing...but I also don't eat a whole lot either...I just sleep...a lot.
I haven't been the gym since Friday (took the weekend off) but meant to go back this morning, didn't make it - I was having amazing and weird dreams and just wanted to sleep more so I did...and had great dreams...
Sooo...I'm going to the gym this evening...it'll be fine.
And I'm also pleased to report that I am feeling/seeing slight results - mostly in that I was able to fit into and look good in a pair of pants from Target which NEVER happens...:D I'm excited.

Yup, as long as the top looks alright to me, I don't care what is going on with the parts I can't see.
On an actual fitness related note, I did a whole hour of Yoga this evening, non stop. I really have not been able to do that comfortably in a very long time. I usually only do a half hour-ish.

Jogging is fun, I always do a little on my hill hike, just to make it more snazzy.
I walked to work and back (25 mins ea. way, fast, naturally) then when I got home I did 15 minutes on my stepper thing (you can only do 15 minutes at once on it, due to friction heat, but it has arm pully things on it, so it's a good little workout).
I'm going to do that hour yoga tape again tonight, because last night while doing it I had a breakthrough with my injured leg.

^ I just skimmed the site, but it look very cool. Congrats on the pants, btw. I love a bargain, esp when it's something that you really need and/or looks great on you.
Jaz - that does NOT seem to be enough calories for you. Sesly. :( Scary low. I worry, bubulah. You need more food, me thinks. And I concur with Amber, def. more protein. I mean, the LC dinners are great, but it's usually only 1 meat serving & a veggie serving. And I love apples, but personally they make me way more hungry (I guess it's the glycemic index & all that.) I beg you to AT LEAST eat some more veggies along with your dinners, and an orange or banana once on a while. Please. For me. :xoxo: Some egg whites, perhaps? Weight Watchers bagel or English Muffin? Hmm?
Couple things. #1 - I found this delicious hummus at the grocery store. I was very skeptical, because I've tried hummus a couple times in the past & it sucked. But Tribal Roasted Red Pepper Hummus is f*cking tasty. I've been dipping pretzels in it (that's about all I have in the house snack-wise right now) but I'm sure it would be awesome as a sandwich/wrap condiment too, as well as with some sort of crappy healthy whole wheat crackers or something. Exciting.
#2 - I did a full 30 (was it 40?) minutes on the elliptical Friday. Took yesterday off, partially because I was busy (read: active) early in the day & partially because I got really lazy at night & couldn't tear myself off the couch & away from the 50 home improvement/design shows that were on. Today, I kicked ass. Did a full 45 MINUTES (my longest ever!) on the elliptical, then did a good 20 minutes of light weights/resistance & ab exercises. It felt great. The elliptical claims I burned about 440 calories, so hopefully that will make up for some of the beer I've decided to drink tonight. :D

Well I kicked my ass at the gym today and did an hour of cardio since I skipped the past 2 days. Then I did legs and abs. It felt great but I'm pretty tired now!

I watched some of that too. The end actually. Oprah does not let him get a word in! Rock those abs!

Sweet.
I did my two hour cardio thing yesterday. Not Saturday, though, like last week. I think I'll only do it both weekend days every other week, it is pretty taxing. Unless I feel like it, of course. My resolution has held for 2 weeks so far, to do cardio, yoga, and my weights course all at least 4 times per week.
