Okay, seriously y'all, tomorrow is the day I start back eating healthy and exercising again. I need to lose 40 lbs, hopefully by the summer. I want to be thin, thin, thin. Hm...anyone know where I can get a good tape worm?
lol. I know, right?

apparently, that's how Maria Callas did it. but you see where that got her.

it is really hard, but nothing you can't do. nothing tastes as good as thin feels...that's what I say.

good luck!

well, it took my ass about 3 weeks, but I've managed to lose another 2.4 lbs. I am so close to my goal it's not even funny. if I can lose 10 more, I'll be at my goal, but I'd really like to lose 15. 20 would be pushing it.

Way to go Jazzy.

You gonna be one fine azz beyotch.:wavey:

20? Good God. I know I have never been graced by your fabulosity in person. So my opinion is about worthless. But the pics from your trip to cali to see the TP shows don't give me any hint of where all that would come from. Maybe you got a lotta back.

It irritates the piss outta me when I tell someone I have pounds to drop and they laugh in my face(though it was kinda cute when Paula did it). I'm not doing that to ya. I know it's easy to hide an extra 10 or 15 lbs. Been doin it for over a year. But 25 or 30? No way no how. Maybe ya didn't post those pics.

Got about 10 to go here too. 15 and I'd be ripped. But I could never maintain the 15, so I am not shootin for it.

 I wonder how many people have actually though this...cause I know I have...not seriously, of course, but still :p

My grandma was all into some diet pill that she picked up in Mexico - you took one, lose weight, then take another when you're where you want to be...

Well it turns out the "pill" was something that gave her worms..the other? Killed the worms...

Don't know how true that is, maybe it's a family urban legend, but my grandma still tells it to this day..yuck.

For God' sake, who around here needs one?
Between Amber and Paula, I feel I am completely set.
And I am completely not kidding.

I just bought a NordicTrack Elliptical machine for $100!!! I found it on Craigslist...wasn't the first who replied, but apparently I was the most persistent, non sketchy one who did.

So the guy is even delivering it to me tomorrow...I'm so excited...!!!

Now I'll have to invest on some free weights and learn more non-machine leg exercises - but it'll be worth it to not have to deal with crap at a gym...since when I leave my apartment I'll not have the snazzy apartment gym.

I went and worked out last night for the first time in forever. It was only 20 minutes (that was all I could do before I felt like I was going to collapse), but this morning I actually had the energy to fix something to take to work for lunch and a snack instead of going to the McDonald's drive-thru.

I was 174 when I weighed myself this morning. Highest ever was 177, I think, so I'm not freaking out. Last summer I was down to 160, and I hate that I let myself gain another 15-20 lbs since then. Ideally, I want to be between 125-135. We'll see.

Good for you - and 20 minutes is better than none at all! When I started working out again after a long hiatus (and a 40 pound gain) I could only do 15-20 and I couldn't stretch well..it was awful, I felt bad - but got didn't get too discouraged...and it's paid off...now I can do an easy 45 minutes cardio

Paula - "Sparky, make sure you drink 1 serving of milk per day."
Amber - "Don't you dare! Milk is not good for you!"
Paula - "Put peanut butter on a whole grain bagel for a healthy breakfast"

Paula - "Quiet you! Why don't you go eat a whole block of cheddar cheese & Ritz again, genius!"

What she (and Strand and Jaz and Amber) said. :D Go at your own pace, and slowly work your way up. If you try to throw yourself into it, you'll be more apt to be discouraged & give up. I think 20 minutes is great, and the homemade meals are fantastic! Good for you!

:distress: Actually nevermind.

I broke my glasses. So I need to use the money I was GOING to use for elliptical to get new glasses :(

I'm really not happy about it...but at least I have four more months of apartment gym - and in that time maybe another elliptical deal will come through.

I'm completely bummed. And I felt like an asshole for backing out on the guy - though he'll have no problem finding another buyer.

So, two days of eating right and exercising, and....I go from 174.4 to 175.6. wtf?? Okay, so I'm trying not to freak out and take a ginsu knife and just start hacking away at the fat; I'm telling myself that I'm adding muscle, which weighs more than fat, and that's why I gained 1.2 lbs. But part of me thinks that's a crock of **** and I really do have to starve myself into psychosis (not that I'm not halfway there already) if I want to be thin.

A pound is nothing. It could be that you had yet to go to the bathroom, which certainly weighs at least a pound

I wouldn't weigh myself for at least a week in the beginning stages. really. your weight will fluctuate and you don't need to keep an eye on it more than once a week for now. I know it's hard not to get on the scale every day, but until you have flushed your body of all the "bad" stuff and are only eating good, healthy things (meaning you have an understanding of what's in your body and what may have caused the weight gain), I wouldn't risk it...we don't need you going slasher on us.

it could be any number of things. weight fluctuates a lot from day to day, which is why at first, i would recommend only weighing yourself once a week.

we said basically the same thing and we obviously weigh at the same time. weird. lol.

that is good advice. your body's shape can change without dropping a lot of weight because of the fat/muscle exchange. for instance, i do not have a scale (i can't find it? who loses a scale? ), but i know i gained a lot of weight last month because my pants don't fit anymore.

I know. I'm impatient too, but this is where you have to just use your willpower. give it a month to actually see some results. I didn't see anything for like 3 months. then, it just kinda fell off.

it helps if you go at it with an attitude of a lifestyle change, rather than a weight lose scheme. you'll see results in other areas of your life, you just have to be open to them.

I hear that!! That is why months after I started exercising I am finally seeing results on the scale as well as in clothes. It was tough at first because I'd go get weight and either I'd lost .02 of a pound or had gained, after a week of Nazi-point counting. It was very discouraging.

So I had to stop expecting those fast results and just hold steady with healthier behavior...it's taken a while (because I'm not as strict with the diet as I need to be) But I'm getting there

Hmm. My kinda boyfriend has this problem, he's a cancer, too. Except he drinks, not eats. It all makes the same belly. Anyways.

You need to learn some effective coping strategies. First off, you need to do some cardio, it really works off the aggression, or any emotion. Second, deep breathing. Deep, yogic breathing.
Eating is not an effective tool for managing emotions.

**** what a workout I had today.

So get this. My roof is being torn off. So there is a big assed truck with a ramp blocking my driveway. I didn't want to disrupt the workers, and was too dumb to put my pickup on the street last night.

So, I figure I'll just walk to the pool for my swim.

Took 70 minutes to get there. Took 90 to walk back. And I swam a mile. Christ on a crutch are my flippers sore. This little escapade started at 1:50 and I got home at 5:30. The good news is that I will feel justified having a beer tonight at the hockey game. My pal called me, and snagged VIP tix to the Kings game. Plus they are playing the Ducks which means lots of fights.:blob1:

Oh, and a funny thing happened at the pool. It wasn't of Dugong level craziness. Just an oddity.

It's the new lifeguard. About 6' 2" tall, and the spitting image of that guy on Entourage. With a little of that actor who plays the TV superman thrown in. I don't know either actor's name. The guy who's the star of each show. Anyway, this lifeguard is sniffing me. Hard. Second day in a row. WTF? What do I want with some 20 year old pretty boy? It's bizarre. I thought he was just being nice yesterday, but I haven't been cruised like that in ages. The dude leered at me. Freakish. Figures its someone I would have no interest in. Maybe its the facial hair. He might have a handlebar mustache fetish. Jazzy would love him. That pretty college frat boy type. The guy probably has a super hot dad. If he was there it would be a different story.

I'm wondering if I should bump up my food intake a little bit. I've been holding steady for weeks now, but I've been exercising more so I'd hoped to start losing again slowly. I know that at a certain point, your body will store fat if you deplete too many calories. I'm taking in between 1200 - 1500 calories a day (between 23 & 25 WW points), but I'm also burning between 300 - 400 calories a day, 5 days a week through exercise. I'll have to PM Theresa to ask more about activity points. A few years ago, WW didn't take activity into account, but they do now. I follow the older method, so maybe I need to update.

Anyway. I haven't gained & I'm excited to say that it's been a year this month since I got the eliptical - still using it regularly, still loving it. I usually get bored with exercise, but not this time.

yes you get between 4-6 activity points I think...I don't know, my scale is at home...but I know you get to add a pretty good little amount of points for exercise.

Per DAY! :blob1: You get so many points per so many hours of exercise - and of course you have to determine if it's moderate or heavy exercise, but you get a few extra points per day with activity points

I think.. Of course if I'm wrong that would explain why I'm losing so slowly :p

while in Boston this weekend I decided to try out the elliptical machine. I've always hated those things, but once I saw I could burn the same amount of calories in a 20 minute session, I had to try it. and I really liked it. it wasn't as hard on my knees or legs and I got a great workout. I'm gonna have to look into maybe getting one.

I heard there was a recent study where women who incorporated sprints into their cardio lost 3x the body fat of women who didn't. So I've started "sprinting" on the elliptical every few minutesish.

OK, I'm back up a pound. I'm quite sure the 10 beers I downed on Saturday night are to blame. I did have a double cheeseburger & fry from McD's last night for the first time in months (thank God they haven't banned it yet! ) but since that's literally all I ate the entire day, it's not like I went over in calories. I made sure to go a full 45 minutes on the eliptical this morning to try & make up for it, and I'm going to do weights tonight after work.

I am suspecting this info crosses genders. As a test, yesterday I started doing more sprints in my swim. I am at 400 meters out of 2200 going full out. Every 9th and 10th lap I am sprinting. Maybe in a few weeks I can amp it up to double that. We will see if it makes a difference. I have totally stalled out in the weight loss, even though I feel a good burn in my chest shoulders and abs this week. Gotta do something to kick it up a notch and this may do it. Been thinking about one of those boot camp things. Kinda spendy, but I bet it would kick my ass and help me lose this last 10-12 pounds.

On another note, it was f*cking glorious here today. 80 degrees, clear blue sky. Had to slather on the sunscreen. I love LA!

Well yesterday was baaaaad as far as food went. I was piggydeanna. We have a candidate for a job up here (who happens to also be a friend of mine from New Mexico) so we all went to lunch - burger and fries. Then we had a birthday celebration for a co-worker - chocolate cake. Then dinner and well I felt like poo the rest of the evening.

But this morning I did an extra good cardio routine and ab work - I'm getting this cheesy ass book that a friend recomended - it's lower body exercises and she's seen great results with it...

So today back to not being a pig, which would be a LOT easier had the girl scouts not delivered their cookies yesterday.

30 minutes of moderate exercise - 1 extra point that day
45 minutes of moderate exercise - 2 points
30 minutes intense exercise - 3 points
45 minutes of intense exercise - 5 points

Of course, this is per Theresa & she's Canadian, so who knows if this is correct. :p I believe she said that they consider it moderate exercise if you're sweating after 5 or 10 minutes; intense, you're sweating after 3.

BTW - inspired by Sparky's idea (and the 2 pomegranate martinis I had last night) I took pics of my ass with my digital, so I could get an accurate assessment of it. Needless to say, they were deleted immediately before I could begin to cry or drink away my sorrows with another martini. :distress: On a more positive (and less disgusting) note - the front view isn't so bad.

So I'm sticking to the plan really well so far. Of course, it's only been 3 days. :D But I have my entire week planned out so I won't be stuck getting home from work at 6pm every night, standing in front of the fridge saying "what should I make/eat?" That's never good, and it's been happening far too often lately. I find it much easier to figure out my diet/point totals and my grocery list when I have a plan ahead of time. Didn't buy the DDR video game yet, no time. This week for sure.

OH! Has anyone seen the Core Secrets workout DVD infomercial? The one with Brooke Burke & Nick Lachey, utilizing an exercise ball? I happened to catch it on Sunday morning, and it looks like it is a really great workout. It's $20 for the first DVD (although now the website says $10), an exercise ball, and a booklet with diet tips - but then it's like $20 for each additional DVD (I think they send you one a month & you have to return it within 30 days so they don't charge you for it.)

So, since I'm cheap :D , I sat there & rewound & paused the program several times (God bless you, Tivo inventer) and wrote down all the moves that I saw. Then I did 10 reps of each one to make sure I wouldn't kill myself (that exercise ball is not always my friend, due to my lack of coordination & general clumsiness.) I felt great afterwards! So, I'm going to try to do this 3x a week for at least the next month (in addition to my 5 days a week of cardio) & see if it's any more effective than my current exercises. Of course, I love how they show Nick Lachey flexing his bare chest, implying that he got those muscles from doing this workout.

Here's the link in case anyone's interested, btw.

I tried an exercise ball for the first time last week in a toning class and I felt like a total idiot! I couldn't do it right. We did the exercise where you lie propped up on your side and your legs are like scissors and the ball is in between your legs and you have to move your legs up and down. Not pretty in my case, not pretty. I could barely lift my legs with that big thing in between them like that! LOL!

Oh, and I happened to find 3 of the workout VHS tapes & a couple of written guides for that program on Ebay for $17 + S&H, so I bought them. We'll see how it goes.

That's what I do. I usually go about 6 mph on the elliptical, so for a "sprint" I try go between 8 & 10 mph.

after a week of not exercising and not exactly eating right, I've only gained 1 lb. :blob1:

I walked hard last night though. I have got to buckle down and get these last 10 - 15 lbs off.

I cut a little article out of Shape magazine that outlined how long you should walk at what speed. they had me running at 7-8 for 5 minutes. um, I don't think so. my legs aren't long enough to do that.

good job, jimmy! don't wear yourself out or injure yourself, though. if you do a run/walk program (there are several sites online that provide programs like that), you'll get frustrated less and decrease the chances that you'll injure yourself. here's a good one: http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml

good job, jimmy! don't wear yourself out or injure yourself, though. if you do a run/walk program (there are several sites online that provide programs like that), you'll get frustrated less and decrease the chances that you'll injure yourself. here's a good one: http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml

it was a ridiculously beautiful day here, so i took the dog for a long walk and flew kites with the kids next door. yes, i am 22. :p

Thanks for the info Carrie!

I have gone running the past 2 nights. Same distance again...with stopping to walk. My mom didn't want me to run today, but I felt up to it and I had a really fun time believe it or not. It was about 65 degrees here around 6 PM. It was beautiful!

OK, kids, I have big news. Well, big new for nobody but me, but you know I love posting earth shattering information  - I lost 3 pounds this past week! :blob1: That puts me at just over 10 pounds total loss. I guess I should credit Theresa with giving me tips to get over the plateau, but I'd rather take all the credit myself. :D

Really, though, just paying extra attention to my eating (logging my meals has been a lifesaver), cardio for 30-45 min at least 5 days a week, resistance/weight/core exercises at least 3 days a week.... it's really paying off. And! I had a birthday party to go to last Saturday, plus we went out to dinner last night. I just watched my points, used the flex points wisely (OK, not really wisely, I blew most of them at the party, whatever,) made sure I earned activity points, and made sensible choices at the restaurant. I am thrilled.

Finally, I went & bought Dance Dance Revolution. Tried it last night - so.much.FUN! It's not always easy, and it will take me a while to get better at it, but it's definitely a good workout, something different so I don't get bored. Mark tried it too - neither one of us has much rhythm, I can tell you that much. :D

Do you mean the WEEKLY ALLOWANCE Points (the 35 extra per week)? It's called the FLEX Plan. I guess you could call the "daily 22 points" Flex points but those extra are "Weekly Allowance Points".

Jeez, Theresa, I know you're Canadian, but it shouldn't be this hard to communicate.

Yes, I call those weekly points to be distributed however I choose my "flex points." It's a hell of a lot shorter than saying "weekly allowance" points. And it sounds way cooler.

BTW - This actually proved my theory that I probably wasn't really eating quite enough. If I evenly disperse my "flex" points throughout the week, that would give me 27 total points per day (22 daily, plus 5 flex points.) I haven't actually been doing that, my total varies from day to day, but still. I was previously limiting myself to 25 & under each day & did not give myself any activity allowance - so on days that I would do 45 minutes of intense cardio, I was still only eating 25 points or less (when I could have been eating at least 27.)

Old way: 175 points per week max
New way: 189 points per week max (not including activity points in exchange for exercise.)

Meh, why not? Hope this isn't too advanced for any of you. Actually, you all seem to be doing really well, congratulations, I just thought this was interesting. If you ignore the parts you don't know about, and the yoga parts if you don't do yoga, the herb parts are cool. I know about the parts, and I do yoga, so the whole thing is cool, too. Although right this minute I'm going to stop reading articles and actually do some yoga. I, myself, had a weight challenge situation recently, so I might try some herb support. Maybe. It was only a couple pounds worth, no need to panic or anything. I might also just go back to getting off my fat ass and stop being a pig. We'll see. :p

You guys might be interested to find out if you are Kapha, Pitta, or Vata. There's quiz thingies out there, google wise. You bigger slower more relaxed "girls" probably have more Kapha. I'm pretty balanced, but a bit more Pitta. The waify cool airy types have more Vata.

I feel like it is easier for me to lose weight than some of you guys, except Theresa, so I get a bit complacent. Also, sometimes, I say nanny nanny. Wait, that's only in my head. Sorry. Just teasing, I'm really thrilled that you all are doing so well. Even Sparky, who is doing so well with his three dates. I want three dates just as much as I want to lose weight, right about now.
Although, I wonder, if you have so many dates you must be burning extra calories. Dates are hard. Both kinds. I either feel the burn trying to be charming and interesting for a long time, or feel the burn the other, preferable, way.  :wavey:

Anyhoot...

"...In addition to practicing stronger forms of yoga, you can safely use several herbs in conjunction with your practice to support the process of weight loss. One such class of herbs is known as thermogenics. These herbs induce thermogenesis and increase the conversion of fat into heat. Bitter orange (citrus aurantium), the mature fruit of the green orange, is one of the safest and works by increasing the metabolic rate, generating heat, and stimulating the breakdown of fat (lipolysis). Plus it has none of the unwanted side effects—high blood pressure, insomnia, and nervous agitation—of some of the inferior herbs that have thermogenic properties.

Another herb is Gymnema sylvestre. Its Hindu name, Gurmar, means "sugar destroying," and it has the ability to reduce blood sugar levels and even anaesthetize the sweet-sensing taste buds, thus reducing sweet cravings and appetite. Gymnema sylvestre has great potential for yogis because long-term use results in a higher ratio of muscle mass to body fat due to increased insulin production.

Guggul is highly recommended by Ayurvedic practitioners to purify and rejuvenate the body. Its weight-reducing properties stem from its ability to lower high blood cholesterol and triglycerides through a thyroid-stimulating effect. Similar to myrrh, guggul reduces kapha and many of its undesirable and excessive manifestations within the body and only slightly increases pitta.

Siberian Ginseng has the unique ability to convert fat tissue back into carbohydrate in the blood. This effect is twofold: It reduces fat reserves and provides needed fuel in muscle tissue for both immediate energy and endurance during yoga.

Kaphas often find it difficult to tap into energy reserves during practice. Yet this can be overcome with the gradual loss of extra body fat; muscle mass increases, energy returns, and asanas requiring twisting or reaching around the hips or thighs become easier to do. But keep in mind that these herbs are not magic pills. Their role is to offer support while you focus on a strong and challenging practice, and if you are persistent, the weight will gradually come off."

I hurt my deltoid pretty bad a few months back - the MD I work with told me that my weights were too heavy. So I've cut back a lot on deltoid exercises (the ones I still do are very slow & cautious) & I'm careful about how much weight I use for each specific arm muscle. It's much better, but took a long time.

It is good, I eat that whenever I go to Chico. They have a taco bar at this one Mexican/bar place, where I and a boyfriend worked once, where you can watch them make your shizz (all choppy and grilly and cooky and sexy, seriously, only cute guys at the Taco Bar) and fish tacos are one of their specialties. I always get a Mahi Mahi one, and then a salmon one. Then my best friend and her brother who I'm dating are grossed out cause they don't eat fish. Good times.
Anyway, Mahi Mahi is very mild mild. Delish, especially with guac.

Since you can afford to go to a gym or something, I recommend you take some good classes before. In yoga, alignment is very important to move the stuff. It's all about alignment and breathing. I went to some classes, and read a lot, and have an understanding of the alignment. Obv., you can feel it, too, once you know a little bit.

I'm not trying to be an asshole, I was actually thinking it would be especially good for you, because you strike me as...I dunno...someone who would be good at it, and really sink into it and understand it, body wise. You seem less the firey, kick ass, push it to the limit, play sports, be hyper athletic and active, exercise guy then most. I just have this sense that it would be, for lack of a better definition, "your sport". You're body even seems the right type to be pliable. Not that un pliable people shouldn't do yoga, or that yoga is a goal, but you know how if you can "accomplish" things, you will be more likely to do them.

I'm hella unpliable, which makes yoga like necessary therapy to me. My hamstrings will kick your ass, but only if you are within 3 feet of them, they are so unlimber. That is why I like yoga, because it is against my nature so of course I need it.

Also, this is just my learned opinion, but Virgos can usually use some chillling out, and some deep breaths. First because they are so prone to work hard and take on minute (my-nute) stress above their well being, to serve the purpose of the whole, second because Virgos tend to be health consciouse (sp) and want to take care of their bodies and eat well. They know that to truly disseminate facts, and to be all that they can be, to serve and conquer logically, and work HARD, they need to be healthy. Virgo is actually kind of the health sign. And you are actually the only "overweight" (cept, not now) Virgo I have ever met. And you are so Virgo in many other ways, this is like your last project. You were always meant to be healthy and conscientious. And now that you realize you deserve to have the best things your body can be fed, or do, I predict you will be in alignment with millions (or one, or whatever) of the goals you've always had in your mind. You haven't shied from all your other goals, you've met them and beyond (hello, you sang RTTG, and get along with lawyers so much that they are fighting for you to be in their office), so I'm sure at some point this will be no problem for you as well. Sometimes I am concerned about the fact that you don't like to play outside or exercise as much as I love, but I see that you are coming along, and realize the value, so that even if you slip, your sharp Virgo mind and natural discipline will have the tools to be back on track whenever you choose. :xoxo:

Sorry so long.

Walking at a quick pace is probably better than running. Running long distances frequently can really damage your joints...

running can be hard on your joints, but it's a better cardio workout than walking. it gets your heartrate going faster, and you're burning more calories. as long as you start out slow and do a run/walk program, you can better avoid injury.

good job, jimmy! be careful! :wavey:

I've been doing better with my eating this week. Only had McDonald's twice, and I exercised yesterday and today. If my scales are to be believed, I have lost 2 lbs. since Tuesday. I was down to 173 from 175. Maybe it's meaningless, but I need that kind of thing to keep me motivated, otherwise, I think "Oh, what's the use?" and order a quarter-pounder value meal. Anyway, I feel pretty good. It's weird - I've never really *wanted* to exercise before, but I'm actually finding myself looking forward to it. I would sooo love to be down to 145 by my birthday (July 4). I just want to be able to fit into more than 10% of the clothes that I own!

ok, i thought you just wanted cardio ideas so you could gain more energy, etc. but if we're talking about putting on weight & muscle, i would suggest increasing your caloric intake, especially from lean protein, like chicken, turkey, and eggs. also, there are good protein shakes out there. then i would invest in some weights and get a book on lifting.

I have a very fast matabolism - I have barely put on weight since I was 15. I eat like a pig all day, and never put on an ounce. Weights seem to just make me leaner - as I am already all muscle, there is nothing to work with. I guess its just a case of building my muscle. But that, I have no idea how to do...

I have been looking into protein shakes - but Im worried that they might screw up my matabolism

Well, week two of my stricter plan, and I'm down another 1.5 pounds - that's 5 pounds in 2 weeks, and a grand total of 11.5 pounds lost over the past.......oh, I don't know, year? I actually thought I had lost more this past week, but it's cool, I'll take it. The other day, I was laying on my side & I went to rest my hand on my hip fat - only it wasn't there. Just hip bone. I don't know when it happened, but my fat lump is greatly diminished. I almost cried, I was so happy. I credit the kickass eliptical workouts & re-focus on squats.

Theresa - you'll be thrilled to know that I didn't even use all of my weekly allowance points this week! Of course, today's day 7, and it is Friday, which usually means drinking. :D So I make no promises that those 14 extra points will still be there in the morning.

I expect the arrival of my Ebay purchased Core Secrets crap any day now. Hopefully I haven't been doing all of the exercises wrong - I guess I'll find out soon enough. I am def. getting a new bike for my birthday, so there's another cardio method for me. Dance Dance Revolution is way fun, but I need to go out & get a memory card so I can save my games & use the points to "buy" more songs. There's only so many times I can dance to Since U Been Gone. :)

Good work! Make sure to keep your posture in check when on the treadmill -- especially shoulders back, tummy tight, head/chin up, butt tight. It might help you avoid injury or strain while utilizing more parts of your body. A couple links...

It is such an amazingly beautiful day here today so I said f**k the gym and I cleaned off my bike and went for a nice long ride...well first I had to walk it to a nearby gas station to put air in the tires...but I'm glad that being under a mountain of snow all winter didn't do any damage....

There was some small rusting - but it was surface and CLR took it all right off with minimal effort - so I'm please I did not ruin my bike....

I have decided that now that the weather is getting nice I will do at least one (hopefully more) fun exercise thing a week, like bike ride or rollerblade. Hopefully that will help with gym fatigue and I can look forward to doing more outdoors. And hopefully soon someone will find my buns on their front lawn :p Anyone seen those commercials? They're awful...I hate them actually.

Same here! We took the dog for a nice long walk yesterday, and it felt so good to be outside NOT freezing my ass off. There's a sweet bike on sale at Target this week, so I think I'm going to get it & make Mark pay for it. :D

Got the Core Secrets stuff in the mail - what a ripoff. Actually, it's not all bad, but I'm so glad I didn't pay full price. The chick sent me the ball, 3 vids (fundamentals - haha, get it? - the 25 minute total body workout & the 45 minute advanced core something something.), the flash cards, the workout guide & guide to good eating.

So. The ball is fine, nothing special, and I already have one. The guide to good eating or whatever is crap. I guess if I weren't already following a plan, it might come in a little bit handy. The workout guide is insane & hard to understand - too many specifics. Stuff like "do 3 minutes of cardio, then half of the 25 minute total Body Workout video, then 6 minutes of cardio, then the other half of the vid, then stretch, then 5 more minutes of cardio, then cool down...." And it changes every week. Whatever. I'm doing my own thing - 30-45 min of cardio 5-6 days a week & the ball workout 3 days a week.

The fundamentals video was a bore - I thought he'd give more advice on proper form, safety, breathing, preventing injury etc. Not much, and the points he did make weren't anything I didn't know already. He reviewed the 10 basic moves (with Brooke Burke as his trainee, of course) and that was it. Considering there's about 50 moves, it wasn't a huge help. Thanks, dude, I already know how to do bicep curls while sitting on the ball - could you go over your crazy twisting lunges instead so I don't dislocate my knee?

The 25 minute total body workout? Heee. After his little warmup/cooldown sessions (which seem to only focus on 2 or 3 areas of the body) it was more like 20 minutes IF THAT. And I think there were maybe 10 or 12 exercises total with only 8-12 reps each. How the hell is that going to work my whole body? I guess for beginners it's OK, start slowly & all that. It's quite obvious that you need to keep buying more videos in order to get a good workout, and I ain't playin' that. I haven't done the last vid yet, so I'm hoping that one's better.

The flashcards are OK. They review the exercises (the way it's written can be confusing at times) and there are pictures to remind you of just what the hell you're doing. I'll use those, along with the moves I saw on the vids & the ones I stole from TV and make my own workout. And I'll be selling those first 2 vids on Ebay soon. :D

That said, I am buying this cheesy cheesy looking book called "Bottoms Up" or something...I'm embarassed to even buy it it looks so lame. BUT two of my friends do the exercises in there and have both seen great results...it's (if you couldn't tell by the title) ass and leg specific....which is my most troubled area.

Bump. When you start with weights be sure to focus more on your form than how much you are lifting. Lift enough that you can feel it without straining hard. I do 3 sets of 10 reps. The last set should be almost too hard to finish, especially once you get rolling. You need to max out the muscles so they will build up. Do make sure you eat enough protein but I am not sure supplements are necessary. I don't know much about them, there are probably some posts about that in this thread!

Cool, thanks for the info Suze. I'm not going to worry about supplements for now. I'm just trying to eat heavy protein things like meat, nuts, etc. Does cheese have protein in it? I have no clue, but I normally eat it a lot when I am on a diet since it has no carbs...

I guess I will make an omlet for breakfast tomorrow. That has lots of protein.

Tonight was the first time I exercised since Sunday. I've also been eating McDonald's every day this week for lunch, except for today. So I probably have undone all the working out and eating semi-decently (there were still McDonald's excursions about three days last week, but I was exercising) that I did last week. But oh, well. I kinda wish they'd let me do that gastric bypass surgery, but I'm technically only about 35 lbs overweight.

Gastric bypass surgery scares me. My friend's cousin had it done, and she throws up constantly, and then goes and eats more. All she can keep down is candy and junk food, which is probably worse than what she was eating pre-surgery, health-wise. Someone else I know of had the same experience -- all he eats are candy bars.

I know 2 people who've had it done. A friend of mine was probably about 350 -400 pounds at her heaviest. The surgery was a success, she was eating healthy & exercising several times a week & she lost close to 100 pounds within 6 months. Then she had the surgery to remove her excess abdominal skin, and it all went to pot. The biggest problem is that it was major abdominal surgery, and her activity was severely restricted for 6 - 8 weeks. Even after that, you can't exercise really effectively for a long time. So while she's not as big as she once was, but she's definitely put some of the weight back on.

The other is my neighbor. She's lazy & claims she has no time, so all they eat is takeout. In the summers when she's busy decorating her patio, gardening, etc. sometimes her family (including her 2 young morbidly obese kids) doesn't eat dinner until 9 or 10 pm. Anyway, she was probably about 60 or 70 pounds overweight - not enough for the surgery. So she GAINED more weight on purpose to make herself eligible. She kept whining "I don't knw why they're making me to to nutrition classes is I'm having the surgery anyway." :( The week before I was talking to her about recovery time & she didn't realize that she would be intubated & put under general anesthesia for the operation. WTF. Anyway, she had it done & lost most of the weight. She looks pretty good, but seems to be literally living on coffee & donuts alone (she works @ DD.) She still rarely cooks, they still get takeout 4 or 5 times every week & her kids are still obese. Yeah, a real success story.

Sorry about the tangent, it's just that people think the surgery is an easy fix & it's really not. You still have to work out, watch your diet, etc.

As for me, I'm down another 1/2 pound, so a total of 12. Going to buy that bike tomorrow.

The surgery can only help you if you have discipline. I know people who had it - stuck with it for a few months - and then began eating again. In the end, there is no quick fix.

I find if I take my lunch to work, I will not buy lunch as I do not want to waste it. I also take no money to work as you can't buy it if you can't pay for it

Exactly. And I do the same thing for lunch.

I also find myself comparing different foods - for example, if I have 3 points left for a snack (you can obviously do this with calories too) I can either have tricuits w/cheese & some pepperoni ~or~ a bag of light microwave popcorn ~or~ 1 Cadbury Creme Egg. I do love those little eggs, but I rarely choose it because it has no nutritional value and it won't fill me up compared to the other snacks. Sure, once in a while I'll treat myself. I'm finally to a point where my I listen to what my body is telling me too - after eating candy I almost always feel like crap - yet in the past I'd eat it anyway...or cookies, or brownies. I still have those things, just not as often. I'm much more satisfied with a handful of almonds (also had to learn to portion and not just pop the container open and eat them all), or a little bag of light popcorn and carrots. My snacking has really changed...though still not as much as it needs to - but at least I'm aware of it.

I got a big boost this week when those pants fit and today I'm wearing jeans I wasn't able to wear before too - and I did an experiment last night...

Remember last year when I was upset because NONE of my summer clothes fit...well they all still fit this year....and the pants are a bit big now...:blob1: I'm so very happy...more proud actually that I'm back on the work out train and sticking with it. Woowoo! <<--cheesy train noise for emphasis. :D

I am so discouraged. I have been eating healthy and cut down on all the junk food, and I have excersised daily for almost two weeks now. Some times I would exersise twice a day. Guess how much weight I have lost? Not one damn pound! How is that possible?

I've been doing at least an hour of cardio a day, like power walking on the treadmill or roller blading. And, I have drastically reduced my calories by at least half. I am getting 8 hours of sleep, and drinking tons of water. I am doing everything right. So, shouldn't I have lost a little weight by now?

I haven't dieted in a while. But normally, I lose weight pretty fast and I notice a difference in the way my clothes fit, the way I look, etc. But this time, I am getting no results. Does anyone have any hot tips? Why would I not be losing weight?

Cut your calories by half? That sounds like way too much. If you were eating 2000 calories before, that means you're only eating about 1000 now? Not enough, IMO. Starvation diets are not good, and you can't sustain eating that way forever without making yourself sick.

A few thoughts. Are you eating a balanced diet with foods from each of the food groups? Cutting calories won't help if all you're eating is carbs or if you're not eating any veggies. Have you cut all fat out of your diet? You need to eat some fat, it's not healthy to eliminate it completely. Have you increased your fiber intake? This will help you feel full longer as well as promote elimination - just be sure to increase your fluid intake so it doesn't have the opposite effect. Are you keeping your heart rate elevated for the entire cardio workout? You need to have it above a certain rate (depends on you age, size, etc.) to gain heart benefits as well as increase metabolism & burn more calories. Are you varying your workouts - altering your routes while blading, changing you incline or speed on the treadmill? Your body can get pretty bored doing the same thing over & over again. Are you doing resistance exercises (like squats, lunges, pushups, etc.) and/or using weights in addition to your cardio? Some studies have shown that these types of exercises will build more muslce & speed up your metabolism, helping you lose weight. Are you eating 5 or 6 small meals a day as opposed to 3 big ones? Spreading out your food intake every 3 or 4 hours helps keep your blood sugar a bit steadier so you're not starving by the time your next meal is due.

I found a website that seemed to have some really good guides. Check it out!

Don't give up Jimmy! I know it's frustrating, I've been there. It's taken me several months to drop 13 pounds. And that's OK. You've just started, so do some research & try to figure out what you can improve & keep at it.

I reiterate what Paula said. and believe me, I know how you feel. give us an idea of what you are eating and when. sometimes it takes at least a month to see any results. if you're really out of shape, your body needs time to wake and say "oh ****, he's serious" - cutting calories is good, but like Paula said, be sure you're eating enough so that your body doesn't actually start storing fat because it's in "starvation mode"

I was joking about having the surgery. My mother had it about 15 years ago; she was probably closing in on 300 lbs (and she's all of 5'7"). She was really thin for a while, and yes, there was a lot of vomiting at first. She didn't really change her diet much or do any exercise, so she did gain some of it back, but she's not nearly as big as she was before the surgery. Of course, I haven't seen her in two years and don't really care to, so who knows where she's at now.

I find if I take my lunch to work, I will not buy lunch as I do not want to waste it. I also take no money to work as you can't buy it if you can't pay for it

Even if I take my lunch, I will still go out and buy fast food instead. I did cut up my debit card several months ago because I didn't want to give myself the means of buying it; and that has helped me cut down, but if I have any cash whatsoever, I will spend it on a burger and fries.

I don't really eat candy. A lot of sugar makes me sick to my stomach, which mostly rules out donuts and certainly those disgusting Cadbury creme eggs. I seriously don't see how anyone eats those. And candy corn. That will make me vomit on sight. :distress:

I've completely fallen off the wagon. I haven't exercised at all since a week ago last Thursday, and I've eaten fast food every day. Yesterday I gorged on two chicken sandwiches from Chik-fil-A, a large waffle fry, and one of their mint cookies & creme shakes. I was in some major physical pain for several hours after that, and didn't eat for the rest of the day, needless to say.

Today, I've decided not to eat anything, but just drink herbal tea and water.

Even after all this eating, I'm still between 174-175, which is where I was after a week of eating right and exercising every day. I'm starting to wonder what the point is.

It sounds to me like emotional eating and if you get to the reasons behind it you can get control over it. You can start too by doing other things that make you feel good besides eating.

Also, one week is not nearly enough time to judge your progress! If you put the focus on how you feel and not how you look you will be more successful. Easy does it too, the tortoise wins the race remember? It took me a year to lose 14 lbs but I did it and look and feel great. It also looks like I lost about 20due to getting fit and toned. It is great for your confidence and self-esteem to get in shape. Good luck with it! :)

^ Just read an article that said it takes at least 6 - 9 months to really make a permanent change in your life, esp. as far as diet & exercise go. Thinking that you'll be successful right away & be able to maintain it without any problem is just setting yourself up to fail. It was a really good article, I'll try to transcribe some of it this weekend if I have time.

I lost about 1/2 pound since last week - not to shabby, considering my Toronto trip & Easter were within days of eachother. :o

Nicely done. That timeframe makes sense. It took me so long to get used to the weight training and stop hating it. I'm at 147 which is down a pound for a total of -15 from when I started over a year ago. This is within the healthy weight range for me and I feel great about that. I just had my driver's license pic redone too and I look YOUNGER now than I did in the pic like 7 years ago or whenever. http://www.cnn.com/2007/HEALTH/diet.fitness/04/16/healthmag.sneaky.tricks/index.html

Sneaky little slim-down tricks
(Health.com) -- Health magazine went to the top weight-control experts for their No. 1 tips to get the weight off now. Take a look.

Start smart
Begin lunch and dinner with a veggie-rich salad or broth-based soup, says Pennsylvania State University satiety expert Barbara Rolls, author of "The Volumetrics Eating Plan." "That lets you fill up first on a big volume of low-calorie food and ends up displacing some of the foods you'll eat next -- the choices that are usually higher in calories."

Here's a good salad recipe: Mix 1½ cups of salad greens with ¾ cup of raw veggies like onions, bell peppers, carrots, broccoli, or cucumbers; drizzle with 2 tablespoons of low-cal bottled dressing.

Sneak a snack
"Ten minutes before each meal, eat some healthy fat (around 70 calories or fewer): a handful of nuts, a few slices of avocado, or a spoonful of peanut butter, for example. That helps activate ghrelin, a hormone that lets you know you're full," says Michael Roizin, MD, co-author with Mehmet Oz, MD, of "You on a Diet: The Owner's Manual for Waist Management."

Try the 3-hour rule
"The secret to losing weight comes down to keeping your metabolism alive and active," according to fitness guru Jorge Cruise, author of "The 3-Hour Diet." How do you do that? By eating every 3 hours, give or take 10 to 20 minutes, he says, which translates to three moderate meals with three snacks (100 calories each) between meals.

Though other experts say there's nothing magic about 3-hour intervals, eating small, frequent, portion-controlled meals and snacks can keep your blood sugar level steady, your energy up, and keep you from overindulging.

Have liquid assets
"If you're going to drink anything with calories (i.e., fruit juice, soda, sweetened coffee and tea, or alcohol), you need to consciously adjust your diet to accommodate those extra calories," says Purdue University nutrition researcher Richard Mattes, PhD. His research shows that people typically make adjustments to eat fewer calories over the course of a day after eating a solid food like jelly beans, but not after drinking the same amount of calories in a glass of soda.

And if you want to replace sweetened drinks with their calorie-free counterparts, rethink it. Some research suggests that people who drink no- or low-calorie drinks might actually end up eating more, Mattes says. The best thirst quencher -- and a dieter's best friend -- is still plain old H2O.

Cut out this combo
Skip those munchies made with white flour and sugar, like white bread, cookies, and pretzels, says integrative medicine guru Andrew Weil, MD. They signal the body to produce more insulin and set the stage for turning calories to fat, fat, and more fat.

Choose your pals
Studies show that most of us base how much we eat on what others around us eat, says University of Toronto psychologist Peter Herman, PhD. So steer clear of the big eaters in your social circle, at least when food is around. Sashay over and make small talk at parties with the folks who aren't hovering near the food table.

"Marching to your own caloric drummer requires some independent thought and calculation," Herman says.

Pare portions
Everything from beverages to bagels is two to five times bigger today than in the 1970s, says New York University nutrition professor Lisa Young, PhD, author of "Portion Teller" and who has studied the servings dished up in restaurants and by food companies.

"So if you grab a bagel or eat out, chances are you'll be served double what you need," she says. Her advice: Start leaving just a little bit on your plate or, if you can, cut the amount you eat in half. She also suggests that you "use your hand as a portion guide -- 3 ounces of meat fits into your palm, 1 cup of potatoes looks like a fist."

Be an early bird
Eat the most food earlier in the day, says Elisabetta Politi, nutrition manager at Duke Diet and Fitness Center, Duke University's successful weight-management center.

"Many dieters try to trim calories from their break-fast and lunch and then get hungry," she says. "Research shows the calories you eat earlier in the day help you eat less at night" -- a good idea since you probably won't be active after an evening meal.

Step it up
"Get a pedometer and start walking," says University of Colorado obesity expert James Hill, author of "The Step Diet." To keep the weight off forever, the goal is to take 11,000 to 12,000 steps (around 90 minutes) a day.

"You don't need to do it all at once," Hill explains. Start with 2,000 steps a day, or about 15 minutes of walking. Add another 5 minutes (500 steps) each week. You can find supercheap pedometers at drugstores and big-box retailers to help you keep count. There are lots of other sneaky little ways to add more steps to your day, too: Use a cordless phone and walk while you talk, or get up and walk during TV commercials. (Strategies to rack up more steps)

Think thin
"Seeing is believing," says Janice Taylor, weight-loss coach and author of "Our Lady of Weight Loss." "You have to picture yourself thin if you want to become thin." Visualize what you're wearing, where you are, who you are with, and how you feel. "The more vivid the picture, the more real it will feel to you," Taylor says, "and the more likely it will take form."

Shula Lazarus, PhD, a psychotherapist at the North Carolina-based weight-management program Structure House, agrees, though the method isn't clinically proven. "We use it to help dieters visualize a healthy eating pattern and the right portions on their plate. It can't hurt, and it might help."

Fill up on fiber
Crowd out calorie-dense foods by ratcheting up on fruits and veggies. "Start by eating one more serving of fruit and one more vegetable a day," says Donald Hensrud, MD, a Mayo Clinic nutrition specialist. Hitting that midafternoon slump? Reach for carrots -- the carbs will give you a lift. Not only does munching on nature's bounty become a good habit, but it'll also help you tap into dozens of disease-fighting phytochemicals and vitamins. The biggest fiber bulker-upper: beans. Just a cup of black beans nets you nearly 15 grams of filling fiber.

Brush your teeth
Sometimes the best advice comes from your best friend or, in this case, a fellow Health magazine reader. Barbara Haug of Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan, says she brushes her teeth right after dinner instead of at bedtime. "I can be a compulsive snacker in the evening," she says, "but I don't like messing up freshly brushed teeth."

That last one sounds silly, but it works for me. :D I also try to do my strength training/weight exercises in the evening while I watch TV - it prevents me from snacking & actually makes me less hungry.

It may sound silly but it works for me as well. I can't eat after brushing my teeth, so I've found it is a good way to curb snacking. I hadn't thought about doing strenght training etc in the evenings though - I may have to try that. I'm a horrible evening snacker....!

I'm still doing well though...it's been a hard week because it's pledge drive time which means we have chips, candy, soda, cookies and various other forms of crap lying around all week....it's just there for the taking. So I've probably had too much candy already...but I'm exercising so I'm not hard on myself about it.

Anyone still here? I'm hanging in there. Had another challenging weekend with my birthday, a baby shower, an anniversary brunch, etc. But I've kept up with the workouts & haven't gained anything. The weather's finally improving, so I've been on a couple bike rides & I hope to restart the "couch to 5K" running plan again. Also got the "Biggest Loser" workout DVD per Jaz's recommendation & it is awesome. You can customize your own workout each time - I did the warm up, advanced cardio, strength training & the cool down & I was beat!

I found this on CNN, thought I'd share. Great tips.

That last one sounds silly, but it works for me. :D I also try to do my strength training/weight exercises in the evening while I watch TV - it prevents me from snacking & actually makes me less hungry.

Hey Paula,

Thanks for the article. It was definitely an interesting read. Isn't it so hard when you have those events where its so hard to resist those foods you love?

I just finished the first week of the Couch potato - 5k Program. I found it interesting that by the third workout, I was beating my time from the previous nights. I could really tell that my speed was improving.

The one thing that is a pain about this program is keeping the time straight. I don't have a stop watch, so Ive been just using my cell phone.

^ That's too funny! I use my cell too. I'm going to invest in a stopwatch though, it's a real pain in the ass to juggle the phone & reprogram the time during the workout.

And yes, big events are the hardest for me. I do not deny myself anything, but I do portion in out on a plate rather than stand in front of the giant dish & continuously help myself. :D

I think I was the first here to use the Couch to 5K back last summer and I knew it worked cause it totally jumpstarted my loss. I am in the best shape of my life, srsly. I may not be at the exact weight I want to be at, but my waist is unbelievably smaller and I'm more flexible (no jokes please) and just all round better health. I'm still doing cardio 4 times a week and strength training 2 times a week with a day or two off. diet is going fine. I'm losing about a pound or so a week. I have about 8 pounds to my goal and I'm determined to get there. I just bought a jacket this weekend that was a small. it is snug, but I wanted it that way. hello...it's a ****ing small and I can zip it and look decent so you know my ass bought it. lol.

June 1 will be 1 year that I've been on this diet/exercise routine and I've done so much and come so far...it's really amazing. I really have the itch to help someone else do it.

Honestly, I think the cell is the easiest way to go. Its hard when you have to count down 30 seconds and then count down the next 60 seconds in your head while running, but it generally works out. I just did my first workout for week 2. Getting tougher!

Jaz...Im so happy for you. It must be the best feeling in the world!

So markolas, it's not all or nothing, it's just baby steps until you make it. :wavey:

Oh, I haven't even been trying since the last time I posted in this thread.

I'm still at 174, which is where I've been for several months now. I guess if it took you a year to lose 15 lbs, I shouldn't expect much.

Maybe I ought to start trying one thing at a time (either exercising regularly or radically changing my eating habits) instead of going so gung-ho into it for a week or two and then getting burned out.

Am I going to have to haul down there and spank you?

into shape that is

Seriously, start by eating half of what you are given and walk around the block a couple of times in the morning and the evening -- some push ups (15 to start with) in the morning and evening will also greatly accelerate the change. Anyone can do these little things. So, snap to it young man!

yep. if you are the type of person to feel overwhelmed and then just give up, it may be best to start with cutting back on your calories first and then incorporate an exercise routine.

That is how I had to do it so I wouldn't quit. I started at 20 min of cardio 3x per week and nothing at all with the diet. I added something about every month or so, 10 minutes of cardio, light weights, whatever. Just ask yourself what small change you can make that you will be able to sustain. It takes about 30 days to create a new habit so cut yourself some slack! :)

You'll damned near be there by next week.:blob2:

I haven't gotten on a scale in three weeks. But I am back on starting monday. Been exercising lots. 38 mile bike last sunday, 3 miles swimmin so far this week. And I have worked my walk/run up to 3.3 miles in about 45 minutes. Done that once this week too.

Hopefully I've dropped a pound or two myself.

^ I love my new bike! Looking forward to going for a nice long ride this weekend.

Down another pound. Only 3.5 more to go.

I had the best dinner yesterday, which in turn made the best lunch today. Had some leftover whole grain pasta, so I went & got some orange/yellow/red sweet peppers, fresh mushrooms & zucchini. Sauteed the peppers & shrooms in a smidge of olive oil, threw the zucchini on the Forman grill. Tossed it all with the pasta, a tad more OO & some parmesan cheese - holy cow, was that ever good. No pasta left, so I made low-carb wheat veggie wraps with mozzerella cheese for lunch today. I am so full.

Guess that should have gone into the eating thread. :o Whoops.

What a gorgeous weekend we had! Did a bunch of stuff outside - rode the bike, walked the dog, re-started the "Couch to 5K" running plan this morning. Also went out & bought some clothes that actually fit me.

Oh - and it's really hard to ride a bike against the wind. :p

NO ****. Yesterday there were about 10-15 mph gusts on the really bad hill, and it was brutal. Like riding into a wall.

Sore as all get out today, we pushed up to 42 miles.
My riding buddy announced we have to peak at 80 by the last week of June.

My ass hurts just thinkin about it.

Suppose I had better chirp in on this thread.

Been on a fitness kick myself recently.

I started at the end of February. So we are about 65 days in now. I've shed roughly 28 lbs so far. I'm aiming for another 30-35 lbs or so in the next 140 odd days so by my birthday in October I'll be as trim as i was at 18. :D

No secret really. I don't drink coke anymore. Just mainly green tea, water and the odd juice or coffee now. Salads and grilled meats are my main weekly food but i have the odd indulgence now and again, weekends especially. I walk everywhere I can now and exercise daily. Been slowly kicking my program up each month. I used to be mega fit then it all fell apart! So now I'm slowly getting back to the shape I was when I was a running back.

I'm feeling and looking much better and dropping sizes very quickly. I know its not going back on because I've made a life change and I'm happy with it. I'm more positive than I've been for 15 years.

that's awesome. I know you feel so accomplished. I know I do. it's weird to look back at where I was and how I let myself go from having a kickass body in college and then letting it go after I graduated. I'm glad I "woke up" and got healthy again. I feel better than I have in the past 5 years.

I am starting the third week in the couch to 5k tonight. I'm a little nervous because this one seems a bit tougher than the last 2 weeks, but I know I can do it.

But I need tips from you guys....

I am keeping up with my exercise, its just the fast food I am having trouble staying away from. Just really on the weekends with my friends though. I can't seem to shake some of the temptations and its hurting me. Another thing is Ive noticed that I have started drinking soda again because of my hectic schedule during the week. I just need that caffene rush. I really want to fix these problems. Can anyone offer any suggestions?

Stupid question. How do you know how far you've riden? Do you do marked trails/courses or something? Is tehre a bike odometer? Or do you calculate it somehow? I have no idea how far I ride - I just ride for a set amount of time.
