I am starting the third week in the couch to 5k tonight. I'm a little nervous because this one seems a bit tougher than the last 2 weeks, but I know I can do it.
But I need tips from you guys....
I am keeping up with my exercise, its just the fast food I am having trouble staying away from. Just really on the weekends with my friends though. I can't seem to shake some of the temptations and its hurting me. Another thing is Ive noticed that I have started drinking soda again because of my hectic schedule during the week. I just need that caffene rush. I really want to fix these problems. Can anyone offer any suggestions?
dude. you must cut out fast food. somehow. it will make a world of difference. can you try eating a salad from the fast food joints? if not, I'd try to eat the grilled chicken sandwich with no fries.
as for the soda...again, this makes a big difference. cut out fast food and soda and you wouldn't believe the difference. you'll go a couple weeks of depravation and maybe a couple headaches, but once that's over you'll be fine. if you need the rush, can you drink sugar free Red Bull? and then ween yourself off of it. but, you should really try to make your body not be dependant on any kind of stimulant. I mean, if you really want to be healthy.

green tea is also a source of caffeine and much healthier than soda :)

That sick twisted bastard. :(
Stupid question. How do you know how far you've riden? Do you do marked trails/courses or something? Is tehre a bike odometer? Or do you calculate it somehow? I have no idea how far I ride - I just ride for a set amount of time.
I have this funky little computer niblet on the handlebars. It is hooked to a wire that runs to a dock on the front forks. There is a magnet mounted in the spokes that it reads as it goes around. It gives mph, miles ridden, and rpms. Pretty cool. It has a caloric readout too, but I don't think that particular reading can be trusted.
Sidenote - the handlebar screen probably isn't truly a niblet. It's more of a thingamajig. The magnet is a niblet.

If you feel like you're totally giving something up, it makes it really difficult. I recommend substitutions & better choices instead of completely denying yourself certain foods. You're young & like hanging out with your friends, so IMO it's not realistic for you to completely give up fast food.
What do you usually buy from McD's or BK? Making better choices can help, and still not make you feel like you're missing out. Here are my suggestions - these are the kinds of things that I do:
Instead of a huge sandwich (Whopper, Big Mac, etc.) get a regular one (cheeseburger, junior deluxe whatever-it-is, etc.) If you really really really want a bigger sandwich, then skip the fries & get water instead of pop.
Instead of a large fry, get a small or substitute something else (a side salad with light dressing, Wendy's has baked potatoes, etc.)
Instead of a fried chicken sandwich, get a grilled one. If you like nuggets, get a 4 or 6 piece instead of the 9 or more & dip in BBQ sauce or honey as opposed to ranch.
Ask for extra lettuce & tomato on sandwiches. Skip mayo or "special sauce" type condiments. Ketchup is OK, mustard is even better.
If you get a salad, get light dressing & put it on the side to dip as opposed to pouring it on top - you'll use less. If there's meat on it, make sure it's grilled & not fried. Ditch cheese, croutons, bacon bits, etc. Sonme of these salads have so much crap on them, you may as well eat a Whopper & fries. Seriously.
Don't bother with extra dessert junk like those pies or ice cream - empty calories, no nutritional value, they don't keep you ful very long.
As far as breakfast items go, stick with sandwiches that have egg, cheese & maybe ham. Bacon & sausage are horrible calorie, fat & salt-wise. Hash browns are so-so, get a small. I wouldn't bother with the carby stuff (frennch toast sticks, pancakes, cinnamon rolls, etc.) They won't fill you up, and there's not protein or dairy - just carbs.
Pop. OK. I switched to diet a long time ago & I swear to you that after a few weeks, you will not notice the "aftertaste" that people complain about. As a matter of fact, refular pop starts tasting way too sweet - sickeningly sweet. Also - the flavor difference of diet clear pop (Sierra Mist, Sprite, etc.) isn't as noticeable as colas.
If you just can't do diet pop, Crystal Light type drinks are really good. Same with Diet Snapple. There's a light lemonade around (minute maid?) that's delicious. If you only want the caffiene, change to coffee. Hate the flavor? Dump some Splenda & light flavored creamer in it until it's good. Or go with tea, like Carrie & Jaz mentioned.
Jimmy - you're doing really well. Keep up the great work - you should be really proud of yourself! Making changes now while you're young is a hell of a lot better than waiting until you're older & lazier & more out of shape (like I did, lol.)

If you feel like you're totally giving something up, it makes it really difficult. I recommend substitutions & better choices instead of completely denying yourself certain foods. That's what I've learned to do also. I love fast food, but it's not like I live nearby a ff-restaurant or hang out with people that visit it often, so it's easy for me to avoid it. My sister is a big fast food junkie though, so it pains me that when I do groceries I still have to stock up on that stuff and then later on know that it's in the freezer. Not easy to avoid it in that case, and then it all comes down to willpower. Which I suck at. But substitutions is really good advice, there's lots of snack food or even junk food that's available with a lot less calories and very tasty. Even if your friends do decide to stop over at McD's or anywhere else, there's always other food you can get if you really want something.
Pop. OK. I switched to diet a long time ago & I swear to you that after a few weeks, you will not notice the "aftertaste" that people complain about. I personally never understood where people got the idea of that 'aftertaste' from. I've always preferred Diet Coke over regular one. But the strangest thing happened about a year ago... I suddenly stopped drinking any soda. It's almost revolting to me now, and I had been drinking it ever since my childhood. Nothing happened really, one day I just thought it tasted gross, threw it out and never looked back. I've been drinking mineral water for about a year now. Occassionally some lemonade or juice that contains vitamine C or dairy products.
Do you guys have Coca Cola Zero? There's supposed to be NO sugar in that, but still tastes the same as regular coke, or so they say.

Hey Paula,
Thanks for writing that all out. Im gunna be brutally honest about my fast food, just so I can figure out how to fix it. My big problem used to be Wendy's. Me and my friends used to go there every weekend. Id get the grilled chicken sandwich with fries, coke, and nugs, but I haven't been in about a month, so I'm ok with that.
My mom will bring home McDonalds for dinner a lot because my sister usually gets it after soccer. She ONLY gets double hamburgers no fries or anything else. I'll usually have 3. These two things above I think I can totally GIVE UP, because they aren't too important.
NOW...what kills me....CHINESE FOOD. There is a chain in our mall called Master Wok and it is my passion. I always get pork fried rice, barbeque chicken, and another type of chicken. I eat this alot and I really need to cut back on this.
Another thing I feel guilty about eating is Ice Cream. How bad is that for you? Of course my personal favorite flavor of coffee. :)
As I'm writing all this out I am thinking that this isn't TOO bad about giving up. I can see myself giving up all these foods. I think that soda is a bigger problem for me. I just absolutely love regular coke. Its my favorite drink. This one is going to be a tough one. Sorry folks, the coke substitues just DON'T do it for me. One drink that has been helping me get through this though is Propel fitness water...I love that stuff.
Today, I printed out a calendar of May at work and starting tomorrow I am cutting out all fast food and soda until I finish my couch to 5k program. I feel that if I can come home for a few days and X out the day's I will feel al ot more modivated. Im hoping this stretch will help me break some of my bad habits.
For the past 2 weeks I have been eating for lunch Apple, 3 slices of water melon, 2 ham sandwiches with mustard, and a propel. That keeps me tidied over until dinner. I also love those Smart ones dinners, they are so tasty.
So yeah, thanks for listening.
Oooh one more thing...How bad is 10 beers going to be for my diet?

Jimmy, I hear ya on all that. I love Asian food of any kind. I'm not really an ice cream person, but I know how hard it is to give up something you love. what I did to help myself get through giving up foods I loved was to allow myself one coke at lunch each day and I allowed myself my favorite food once a week until I got to the point where I was able to cut it out all together. now that I've gotten close to my goal, once I reach it, I'll start working my favorite things back in once in a while. I don't see myself drinking Cokes again just because I don't really care about not drinking them anymore and I enjoy Diet Mountain Dew just as much or more. and I probably won't go back to fast food just cause I know how bad all that **** is, but I will go back to eating Asian food now and then.
it's all in what works for you to get to where you want to be. if you are honest with yourself and can't cut out something completely, then don't...you'll only relapse. just cut back as much as you can.

It used to have an aftertaste when it was sweetened with saccharine but it really doesn't anymore! I stopped drinking soda too because there are just so many chemicals in it. I will have a diet soda or even a regular soda occasionally though.

I've drunk diet soda for years. Actually, I rarely drank any soda at all until high school, and then I started drinking diet. So I never had to do the "big switch."
I've had friends who have lost significant amounts of weight (50 pounds or more) and they allowed themselves one, maybe two, cans of regular soda during the day, and drank water the rest of the time.

Jimmy -You're very welcome! That's what this thread is for - sharing tips & secrets for success & also letting people know from personal experience what has & hasn't worked for you. :) Admitting to yourself exactly what you eat & how much of it is a huge step toward getting control of your diet. I was in a rut a few months ago & Theresa sent me some great tips. They were geared toard WW members, but most of it applies to anyone. The biggest thing was writing down what you eat, at least for a few weeks. I started doing that & starting shedding the pounds again.
Looks like your portions could be a problem, although you ARE a growing boy so you don't want to cut back too much, lol. Can you try & cut it down to 2 burgers? Also, limit the Chinese food to once a week? Ice cream is pretty bad, which breaks my heart because I love it. You can either switch to a lowfat frozen yogurt, or to a "no sugar added" or light ice cream - I believe I've seen coffee flavors in these types.
For lunch, the fruit is good, but perhaps change it up once in a while - a banana, orange, kiwi, or berries instead of the melon? Do you like raw veggies? Baby carrots or cukes in low fat dip is delish. Are you having your sandwich on white bread? No fiber, little nutritional value - whole wheat is the best, but most "light" breads have more fiber added to them too, and they make those in white, Italian, rye, etc.
How many Coke's do you drink per day? If you've been drinking 2 or 3, cut down to 1 & like Jaz said, that 1 can be your daily treat. And I know you said NO fake Coke, but have you tried the Coke Zero? I have heard good things.

I've had it. It's pretty good, but I rarely buy it. Cuz I'm cheap. Mike's is now making a fantastic Light Hard Lemonade 75 cals, I believe.
Low carb-type beers (Michelob Ultra, Labatt Select) are better diet-wise because they're lower in calories than other beers. But to me, they are very watery & I end up drinking a lot more. :o And then I get sick.
Light beers with the fewest calories are Genesee Light (heehee) and Miller Light - they both have around 95. Coors light, Bud light & Labatt Blue light are all around 110. F*cking Michelob light is like 130 - only a few less than regular. I consider it false advertising.
Just to give you an idea, a comparison with WW points:
3 regular beers = 9 points
3 light beers = 6 points
3 LIght Hard lemonades = 5 points
3 Beck's Light = 4 points

a good rule of thumb that I use is that the first couple ingredients in a bread product should not be enriched or bleached flour or sugar. it should be whole wheat or something like that.

Hey Jimmy - got this email today from The Biggest Loser. Of course, it's only the partial article, I have to pay to read the rest. But even this little blurb says a lot.
When All or Nothing Equals Nothing
End the mental yo-yo and find a happier, slimmer you
Either you're eating everything in sight. Or you're being so strict with your diet that you deny yourself even a single cookie. Is this you?
If your answer is yes, you're an "all or nothing" dieter. "This is the most common pattern," says BLC nutrition expert Greg Hottinger. "One cause of 'all or nothing' is trying to make things happen too quickly, like sprinting out of the starting gates of a marathon run. This usually looks like undereating and overexercising. Both are a set-up for burnout, injury, and quitting."
"Another cause of 'all or nothing' is being perfectionistic, thinking that slipping up equals failure. The perfectionistic person cruises along at the beginning and then crashes after hitting the first big bump in the road."
How to solve the "all or nothing" syndrome? "You can't expect to be around delicious food without feeling its magnetic pull. You can, however, learn to take care of yourself in these situations, make healthier choices, eat mindfully, and take better overall care of yourself.
Did week 1 day 2 of the Cto5K plan yesterday, elliptical this morning. Still doing the "Core Secrets" workouts 3 times a week, usually in the evening while watching TV. They're amazingly effective at toning.

Thanks Paula, that article says alot. I wanted to cold turkey for a while until I saw some physical results. I need to get rid of these thunder thighs and love handles. I HATE THEM!
Wait till Week 3 of couch to 5k.....ouch is all I have to say. I am sure week 4 will only be worse. I don't like week 3 because it makes you run longer so I don't reach all the way back to my house like the previous workouts. I am doing these workouts ina 2 mile loop.
I took your advice Paula and I have a calendar and I'm going to write down if I have any unhealthy foods/drinks. I think if I see that I had fast food on this date, I will go cold turkey for the rest of that week. Its all modivation factors. ALSO......where can I get a cheap effective scale?

a good rule of thumb that I use is that the first couple ingredients in a bread product should not be enriched or bleached flour or sugar. it should be whole wheat or something like that.
I'm now 6.2 lbs from my goal.

forty****ingfour. I can't believe I actually had that much to love, um, I mean lose. :D I have exactly 6 more to lose as of this morning.
I've been really strict on my sugar and white flour intake recently and it's paying off.

^ That just blow my mind, Jaz. I never would have thought you needed to lose 50 pounds, you carried it quite well. You're awesome.
Jimmy - Household scales are notoriously off by as much as 10 pounds, even if it's a pricier model. I wouldn't worry too much about anything fancy (ones that supposedly measure body fat, water retention, etc.) Just buy a decent scale for $20 from Target or Bed Bath & Beyond.
Once you decide where to put it in your house, always leave it in that spot (moving it around frequently can affect the calibration.) Weigh yourself once a week at the same of day time wearing the same amount of clothing to get the most accurate measure of how much you've lost. Remember that your weight can vary by a couple of pounds day to day depending on water retention, dehydration, pooping, eating, etc. So a daily weigh-in will only make you more frustrated, IMO. Once a week is plenty.

I was such a skinny little bitch all through college that I guess I kept thinking I was that same skinny bitch while my ass kept spreading and spreading. luckily, tape of my NOTS performance showed otherwise. it was right after I saw that footage I realized I had to lose some weight.

Thanks for the compliments. I think I am the right size, I am just trying to work on some problem areas, most importantly my thighs. They are out of control. And like I said before, love handles. I am 5'8 166lbs, but that was in February, before I started exercising. I am hoping to be less than that now, but wouldn't be surprised if I wasn't because I can tell I have gained a lot of muscle in my legs.
Is it normal for my shins to still be killing me?

oh, so we're about the same height. I'm 5'8" ish as well. according to Blue Cross/Blue Shield 158 lbs is the highest weight we should ever be at. are you small or medium framed? I can't remember. I'd say medium, like me.
anyway, yeah, your shins will hurt like that for a while, at least mine did. what helps is to do really good stretches before and after working out. also, try not to run too much...work on building stamina in your walk first. I used to barely be able to walk at 3.3 mph, but now I walk at 4.2 mph. it does get better I promise. for love handles, nothing I've found works better than ball exercises. you know, the big bouncy ball that you sit on and use to exercise? awesome. I'd recommend the Danskin version. I've lost almost all of my "spare tire" -
hips and thighs are hard parts to work on, much like love handles. do lots of resistance training with those exercise bands...those are low impact and work well. squats work. check out things like Shape magazine too...not to sound too girly, but a lot of women's magazine regularly run articles on how to address hips and thighs since that's a spot most women have difficulty reshaping.
also, be sure to gauge your loss in how your clothes fit not just the numbers cause muscle weighs more than fat.
hope this helps!

^ I don't think they have 300, but it's probably close to 200. Mike's is making both the lemonade and the cranberry lemonade in a light version (75 cals.) Now if I could just get them to make a light lime. Yum
OK, red wine has about 130 calories & 3 carbs per 6 oz glass. White has 120 & 1.5 carbs. Champagne has 165 calories & 6.5 carbs.
Hard liquor that's 80 proof has about 100 calories her 1.5 oz. 100 proof is about 125 calories. Little to no carbs in clear liquors. Cream liquors like Bailey's have about 100 calories per ounce & do have carbs.
A few examples of mixed drinks I found.
Bloody Mary - 125cals/5carbs
Vodka & cranberry - 175/18
Rum & Coke - 182/13 (Rum & Diet Coke - 133/0)
Long Island Iced Tea - 274/4
Gin & tonic - 178/0 (they make a diet tonic, btw)
Martini - 175/0
Whisky Sour (made with the mix) 175/17
Margarita (frozen mix) 250/27 :distress:
Margarita (on the rocks, made with the real stuff) 182/8

Regular shots should be 1 oz. If booze has 100 caloried per 1.5 ounces, that that's 66 calories per ounce (right? I suddenly forgot how to do fractions/algebra/equations.)
So Jill, if you do 3 shots, that's around 200 calories.

Good info about food choices I found on CNN.com, taken from Cooking Light magazine.
Pack extra nutrition into every bite with these expert tips
By Wayne Kalyn
CookingLight.com
In 2005, the government's revised Dietary Guidelines for Americans introduced the term "nutrient density," which sounds complicated but simply refers to how much nutrition a food provides. For example, a slice of 100 percent whole-grain bread is loaded with vitamins, minerals, and fiber, while a slice of regular white bread is lower in all three.
We asked nutrition consultants Lola O'Rourke, M.S., R.D., spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association, Lona Sandon, M.Ed., R.D., L.D., also with the ADA, as well as Ann Yelmokas McDermott, Ph.D., M.S., L.N., of the Jean Mayer Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University, to talk about nutrient-dense foods and how to add them to meals to boost nutrition and flavor.
Cooking Light: What is nutrient density?
Ann Yelmokas McDermott: It refers to the amount of vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals, and fiber in a given portion of food -- for the fewest number of calories. Nutrient-dense foods generally tend to be lower in calories. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fish, and poultry are all nutrient-dense foods that give you a big bang for your buck: plenty of vitamins and minerals for the calories. (CookingLight.com: Five goals to improve your diet. )
CL: What are ways to get more fruits and vegetables into your diet?
Lola O'Rourke: Fruits and vegetables are high in vitamins, minerals, and fiber and low in the things you want to minimize, like fat, cholesterol, sodium, and calories. Fresh fruit, as a rule, is preferable to dried because it has much more water, so you feel fuller longer. The nutrient profile of dried fruit is similar to that of fresh (though vitamin C is destroyed by the heat used in the drying process) but contains more calories cup per cup because the water has been removed. You should eat dried fruit in moderation.
Fruit combines easily with main-course dishes. Include apples, diced pear, or mango on a salad, for example. Pour a fruit-based salsa over chicken or fish. If you like dried fruit, sliced or diced dried apricots in yogurt or on cereal is also a quick, convenient way to increase nutrient density of those foods.
A study conducted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the National Cancer Institute suggests that most Americans aren't consuming the recommended daily amount of vegetables -- 2½ cups a day. To eat more servings, combine them with the main course rather than eating them separately as side dishes. Grill a flank steak with a medley of peppers, onions, celery, and carrots, and serve it on a bed of brown rice. Add finely diced or shredded carrots to classic tomato sauce -- or broccoli or cauliflower to macaroni and cheese. While eating a variety of vegetables should be your goal -- each one has its own nutrient profile -- dark green and orange veggies are especially important because of their high antioxidant and vitamin levels.
CL: Are canned fruits and vegetables as nutrient dense as fresh?
Lona Sandon: Both are comparable to fresh and frozen in terms of nutrients, and they come in handy when you don't have time to slice, dice, or peel. When you think about it, canned veggies are fresh foods already cooked. Because of their high levels of sodium, look for low-sodium veggies -- or, with higher sodium varieties, drain the water in the can and rinse off the veggies. I do that with black beans and kidney beans -- and then add them to a green salad, ground beef, or brown rice.
The same goes for canned fruits, which have nutrient levels similar to fresh. Look for varieties packed in natural juice or light syrup rather than heavy syrup, which is high in sugar and calories. It's wise to drain off even the natural juice and light syrup to reduce calories.
CL: What role does fat play in nutrient density?
O'Rourke: In general, you want to reduce fats because they have the highest number of calories compared with carbohydrates and protein. Any food with a lot of fat is going to increase the calories and, in essence, make the food less nutrient dense. We do need some fat -- it transports fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K), carries flavors, and helps you feel satisfied after eating -- but look for monounsaturated and omega-3 types and avoid saturated and trans fats. Salmon, walnuts, and flaxseeds are good sources of omega-3s. Nuts, especially almonds, are rich in monounsaturated fats, as are olive and canola oils. Add nuts in small amounts to salads, main courses, and morning cereal for flavor and crunch. (CookingLight.com: Peanut butter vs. cream cheese)
Fat-free foods don't fit into a nutrient-dense diet unless they're naturally free of fats, like vegetables and fruit. Fat-free baked products -- like cakes or muffins -- replace fat with sugar, so you're still consuming lots of calories. Compare a snack of walnuts and dried fruit to a fat-free processed cookie. The nuts are higher in good fats -- omega-3s in this case -- and you're getting vitamins, fiber, and antioxidants from the fruit. Yes, the cookie is lower in calories, but it doesn't measure up on the nutrient side.
CL: Why are whole grains considered nutrient dense?
Sandon: A whole grain is the entire edible part of any grain -- the bran, endosperm, and germ. Whole grains provide vitamins, minerals, fiber, and a wealth of antioxidants. There are many whole-grain impostors in the supermarket. Look for "100 percent whole grain" on the package or ingredient list. A food label that says "whole grain" or "made with whole grain" only means that product contains some amount of whole grain, but it may also contain enriched wheat flour, corn meal, or rye flour.
Some whole-grain products take time to adjust to -- like whole wheat pasta, which has a strong taste and chewy texture. One trick: Mix whole wheat pasta with white to slowly acclimate your palate. Also, rather than topping whole wheat pasta with marinara sauce, mix it up with steamed vegetables, which complement the pasta's firmer texture.
Rice is a surprising choice when it comes to nutrient density. Brown basmati rice, for instance, is whole grain, and long-grain varieties are mostly whole grain. To add more nutrients and fiber, add wild rice to long-grain.
Plain air-popped popcorn is whole grain, fiber dense, and low in calories, but it isn't great when it comes to nutrients. Still, it's fun to eat on occasion. (CookingLight.com: Test your food IQ)
CL: How can people identify nutrient-dense foods?
Yelmokas McDermott: Any time you have an option, pick the most natural version of the food. If it's oatmeal, choose the least processed version. If it's oranges, go with the orange rather than juice. If it's a potato, eat the potato with the skin on instead of peeled in a gratin. Strive to include four colors on your plate each time you eat. When you go to a salad bar, don't just have a big plate of greens; add the yellow and orange (peppers and carrots), the red (dried cranberries, beets, or red cabbage), and the beige and white (cauliflower and sunflower seeds). If you're making a ham and cheese sandwich, add plenty of lettuce and tomatoes -- and have it on whole-grain bread. Instead of eating a plain apple, spread a little peanut butter on your slices. This approach will guarantee that you eat a nutrient-dense diet.

Doesn't that friggin stink! Good for you for making your goal, that is great! I want to lose a bit more to get down to an 8 myself. I do have a pair of pants that are an 8 but I think they are marked wrong. Just remember, you ARE bootylicious! :D Nelly designed a whole line of jeans for us.

I'm currently down to 234lbs from 250lbs at the end of 2006....
Changed my eating patterns and started to exercise moreso than before, but I picked up smoking cigarettes to 'relieve stress' so I am not that health conscious as most believe (Probably need to smoke a lighter cig)

I'm sore as hell right now. After 4 days of not doing my ball routine/weights, I did them last night & I'm paying for it today. Not to mention that I did my Cto5K this morning. Ouch. It's a good sore, but still. Ouch.

It was either smoking cigarettes, drinking alcohol or buying a gun and going postal to have relief from stress...I went with the less 'stupid' option (Only smoking about 1 pack a week)

Meditation. Yoga. Walking. Relaxation techniques. :wavey: Just sayin'. I suppose a pack a week isn't too bad, but I know from experience that it becomes more too easily. Be careful.

I've smoke about that much off-and-on in the past, never got hooked and always quit 'cold turkey' after I felt 'less stressed'...
Will stop again when my current pack is up since Im not that stressed out now unlike the weekend of my birthday/Mother's Day (It's hard to explain, but I cant get addicted to cigarettes like most  )

Ouch! Once I lose the weight from the couch to 5k program, I need to find out exercises to tone my stomach/pecks without getting a gym membership. You guys will have to help!
I got postponed because of rain for the couch to 5k because of 5 days straight of rain. So I had to do 2nd workout of week 4 last night. It was amazing seeing how much farther I could run!!!

Ouch! Once I lose the weight from the couch to 5k program, I need to find out exercises to tone my stomach/pecks without getting a gym membership. You guys will have to help!
Um...like...push ups and sit ups? :woohoo: That's what I do - and I'm a fat ass right now, like, hella chub, but you can still see my stomach muscles and arm muscles outline. Seriously  And if I didn't have "boobies", you could see my peck muscles, too.
I also bought some cheap 10 lb weights a long time ago to use with my arms - you could do that, or get one of those big weight resistant rubber band thingies, I have that too, and it was cheap. I prefer weights.
But push ups and sit ups should do you just fine for stomach and pecks.
I try to do 4 sets of 25 sit ups, and four sets of 10 various arm things (mostly push ups, a couple sets with weights) just at home at night, while I'm watching TV. I also do calf sets and butt sets and back sets, but you didn't ask about those. :p
Then there are the variations on sit ups and even arm exercises, if you want to get all technical. And you can do a lot of different kinds of lifts with hand weights.
congrats on the faster running! :woohoo:
I'm perpetually sore from the vertical hill hikes I've been doing intermittently (sp), where I run a bit, but probably shouldn't - and biking 60 blocks every morning and afternoon (to get to and from work).
And my VCR broke, so no yoga tapes for me, and the yoga DVD I just bought won't play in my computer DVD - I got to do it twice before it crapped out - So I'm a crabby, stiff, sore ball of muscly fat right now - I swear if someone put me on a rack and stretched me, ostensibly for torture, I'd actually be really happy - but at least I'm exercising. The no yoga is killing me. I do some of the stretches, but it isn't the same. Ow. Ow. Dammit, Ow.
If this "no yoga", "biking excessively to get to work" keeps up, pretty soon I will literally be a round ball of muscle, curled up tightly, unable to extend my legs and arms for fear of snapping tendons...with a delicious layer of fat around it, in case someone wants to deep fry me...mmm, deep fried ball o' Amber (crunchy inside!)....
Not that anyone asked, but WC?

Go Jimmy! Let me know when you're ready for toning exercises & I'll try to help you out. I kind of developed my own workout over the past few months & I can't believe the results I've seen. It's a combo of basic common sense things (crunches, bicep curls, lunges, etc), moves using an exercise ball, and Core Secrets exercises. Seriously, until now I've never been able to se my ab muscles - NEVER. Didn't think I had any. I do it in the evening while I watch TV too, 3 days a week, for about 30 min.
Went for a nice bike ride this morning. Gorgeous here, supposed to be up near 80 this afternoon.

^^
Crunches, bicep curls and lunges are my friends. It's funny - I've still got a bit of weight to lose, but damned if my abs don't already look good so far (I don't have a "pack" yet, but there is definition and not just gut) and I've got wicked nice arms muscles...the butt still needs work - but I get lazy with the lunges and squats...
There are so many varieties of crunches that one can do to target different areas of the stomach - and there was recently a great article on MSN that had great information about form and how to do the crunches correctly for the best results...I'll try to find that article, it really helped me.
I'm down a clothes size. It's official. I bought a pair of pants that was my old "fat" size and in an hour they were falling off...so yeah...had to go a size lower...:blob1:
I'm losing the gym in a month since I'm moving - so I've started biking to work, right now it's 3.6 miles each way, it'll be less when I move but still a good alternative to gym....I'm buying some free weights and then that horrid-looking "bottom's up" book will help with non-cardio things....I'm excited and still feeling good.

Beautiful weather here. I just finished week 3 of the Couch to 5K running plan. And on Sunday, I even got Mark to go on a bike ride with me - 7.5 miles. Not to mention all the yard work & gardening I did - I was pretty sore.
As a side note, a coworker recently turned me on to Turkey Hill fat free cherry fudge ripple ice cream. I normally don't do anything "fat free" but this is damn good.

I'm with you on the fat free stuff...plus, I've heard that "generally" low fat is better than fat free...healthwise. I can't remember why that is, but I remember it made sense. lol.
I just started Southbeach Diet Tuesday to try to get over this hump I'm in. this makes plateau #3. after this one, I'll be pretty much at my goal. then, I need to start toning up a lot.
skcin
05-31-2007, 03:35 PM
^ Well, you need some fat in your diet, but many people are seem to be terrified of it. The fact that something's fat free certainly does not automatically make it healthy - and it doesn't mean you can eat as much of it as you want, lol. Not necessarily better for you either - many things that are fat free have more chemicals in them.
I heard once (and I'm sure I've posted this before) that margarine in 1 step away from being plastic - it's not really food, if you leave it in the sun for days it won't spoil or rot or anything - that grossed me out. So now I use actual regular butter (actually, Olivio, which is butter with some flaxseed oil in it) in small amounts rather than fat free margarine - that stuff is hydogenated crap.
DrummerDeanna
05-31-2007, 03:50 PM

Scary. I use Brummel and Brown....I wonder how that compares.
I'm doing well, still on the exercise routine, but will see what happens when I move and no longer have a gym. By the end of the summer I'm hoping to buy an elliptical machine, and in the meantime keep biking to work and whatnot.
My diet is getting back on track, I'm eating better and finally making an actual effort to balance things out, get more veggies and fruit etc.

she's on Southbeach, like me. in the first 2 weeks, called Phase 1, you can't have any fruit or fruit juice because you can't have any sugar whatsoever during the first 2 weeks. once the Phase 1 is over you start incorporating fruits back in.

Hehehe, this can be my new, fun "give Jaz shizz" thread. :p
Yes, as he says, though fruits have only natural sugar, the idea is to stabilize your blood sugar and break your carb addiction. Natural sugar still messes with your insulin release and all that, and may easily lead to cravings.
No, I wouldn't recommend that anyone give up fruit, of course it is very good for you. It's okay that this diet does it, though, because you can get tons and tons and tons of nutrients still from veggies, and veggies are very much allowed. In fact, people should always try to eat more veggies than fruits, anyways. Veggies usually have more fiber.

No, anyone can do it. I bought the book, it tells you everything. So, I guess technically, you have to pay for the book, but I have seen it in my used bookstore for cheap. Honestly, it is incredibly simple, I could probably type out the foods you can eat. However, you do have to buy special foods. Not exotic foods or anything, but you can only eat certain things that are readily available in your grocery store.
The main thing is the portions, and eating regularly, and you can really only eat veggies (except potatoes and a few others), meat, and lowfat or mozzarella cheese and nuts. And sugar free jello and ricotta cheese desserts. But in the book they have different recipes and snacks so that the menu is varied. For the main meals, lots of salad is involved. Salad and meat. :wavey:

yeah, I tried that instead of buying the book. It didn't work out that well, but maybe it will be different now. Good luck.:)
What foods can do you only have to buy at the grocery store? Im kind of a picky eater...not a fan of cheese or nuts really.

Hmm, that sucks. Like, every midmorning or afternoon snack contains cheese or nuts. But you can substitute Turkey slices or chicken breast, I guess. Also, you should be eating nuts in general because they contain important nutrients. But if you don't, then, the meat will be okay.
um, you don't like cheese or nuts? That is kinda weird...lol.

yep...or at least, I try to. I usually have eggs with a low-sodium V8 for breakfast, some string cheese for mid-morning snack, a beef patty or chicken and veggies for lunch, nuts for afternoon snack and then a salad and chicken for dinner.
I meant to ask you or anyone else that frequents this thread and may know about vitamins...I tak a multi-vitamin, a Zinc pill, a fiber pill and a flaxseed oil pill. does that sound like good practice? am I taking too many, not enough?

I don't do mine exactly right on time. Like I'll have my midmorning snack for breakfast, then later I'll have breakfast. Or I'll have the eggs and turkey bacon and mato juice for dinner, and a couple of my cheesy snacks in the morning. I think I eat a little more than the amount, too, but I'm not sure. I tend to snack on the peanuts a little more. Oh, and I have caffeine, attempting to cut off soon. I will see how it affects my loss in the next week or so.
Calcium has been proven helpful for weight loss, you might take extra. Um..what about your coconut oil pill?
I take more vitamins than you do. I usually have extra C, and I like CoQ10, and I like to take Glucosamine as well. But a good one for you to add would probably be an extra B vitamin a few times a week. I often take 2 multis, 1 at night, 1 in morning. I like to take Alpha Lipoic Acid, too, it's supposed to be good for your skin, especially.
I don't always have all these vitamins at once, in fact I rarely do, but I usually have 3-6 of them at a time. Vitamins are expensive, so I rotate buying some. I also like to get the food based vitamins that whole food carries.
I think you take a fine amount, but you might want to add some different ones.

That sounds about right to me. A multi should take care of whatever you're temporarily missing out on diet-wise. I've been taking the flaxseed oil supplement for about 6 months now, we'll see if my cholesterol went down at all when I go for my physical this September.

Hey! I thought you didn't like bacon? ;) And I just read/saw that men shouldn't take extra calcium because of the increased risk for kidney stones & prostate problems, so he should consider that. Why do you take glucosamine, cuz of your bad knees?
And you joke about the coconut oil pill - my friend started using it & just couldn't get used to the taste, so she rolls it up into a pill & swallows it with water.
I am steady at goal weight for the second week in a row. Drank all my weekly allowance points at the wedding Saturday though. :D I'm going to have to be really careful the rest of the week.

Ah, yes, I wasn't sure if men were supposed to have extra calcium. Maybe he should take one once a week? I dunno.
I don't like bacon, but Turkey bacon is gooood. It has no fat, basically, and only 20 calories per slice, and like, 9 grams of protein, no carbs. mmmm.

Do you really have to be that careful with your maintenance? Or did you drink a whole, whole, whole bunch? (I drank soooo much, it was ridic). Like, when my weight is down to normal, or anywhere, I don't really gain much weight without "special circumstances". Or is the maintenance pretty generous? Can you have a big chicken burrito with chips and salsa? And the rest of the days normal meals, too?

For every pound you gain on "Maintenance" you subtract a point from your daily points total for the next week (lb. for point). It's really quite genius, how WW has this figured out. And really quite easy to live by. So yes, you could have a chicken burrito with chips and salsa, if you want to use up all your "daily" points in one meal

Oh. That's not very generous to me. It's only about 800-1000 calories. I guess it is still pretty strict for maintenance. I don't gain weight quite that easily. But if I did have that meal, I would try to eat light the rest of the day. I guess I was trying to get an idea of how many calories you are allowed in maintenance.

The oil is solid at lower temperatures, so that's how she does it.
I think maintenance is generous. I mean, I can't go nuts & eat as much as I want of whatever I want, but I've been eating whatever I want all along just in smaller portions. I don't drink any less than usual on WW either, to be honest.

^ Exactly!^
http://www.healthyweightforum.org/eng/articles/weight_watchers_points/
When you're on the plan, your points/calories are determined by your age, sex, height, weight, daily activity, etc. so it's different for each individual. I think when I was in the weight loss phase, it was a base of (I'm estimating here) approx. 1200 calories per day (21-22 points), plus the extra weekly allowance points (probably another 1500-1800 calories) to use however you want during the week. If I know I'm going to drink that weekend, I save most of those extra points for that. If I'm going out to eat that week, I'll use them for that. If I'm a loser & have nothing planned, I can use a few extra points each day for a treat - or I don't have to use any at all. Plus, if you exercise, you get between 1 & 5 extra points that day depending on how strenuously you worked out.
On maintenance I get 23 points, plus the 35 extra weekly points, plus 1 - 5 extra for exercise. I'm really not hungry, and I've basically trained myself to eat healthier automatically, and to adjust my meals so that if I eat a large breakfast, I have a smaller lunch & dinner.

Okay, but what do you mean she rolls the oil? It's not like dough. Do you mean she gets caplet shells and puts the oil in the caplet? Or do you mean she slices out a pill size chunk and swallows it at once like a pill?
Anyways - Okay, so I quickly did the math, and now it is around 15-1600 calories a day. Not counting exercise. That isn't too bad, I'm usually a little closer to 1800-2200 when I eat normally. So that makes sense. That seems like a pretty good maintenance number, and I wouldn't feel bad if I went over sometimes and stuff, since it is a bit on the low side (IMO).
Cool!!

yeah, the taste is pretty...overwhelming. I put mine into a bit of plain, bitter coffee, then suck it down with a straw real fast without smelling. It almost tastes normal in coffee that bitter. Yay.
So, I started last Wed. at 161 (yipe!) which probably included some post Chico alcoholic bloat, and this morning I weighed 153. I weighed about 147 ish when you and Jaz visited. I would die of happiness if I was down to 140 by June 30.
Unfortunately, I had to have some non veggie carbs yesterday, and may today as well. I ran out of food, except lettuce and salad dressing, so I ate some free pizza that the office got yesterday, and then a bit of popcorn last night (one of the two foods left in my house). The pizza was healthy - type, and I only had two pieces, but it was on bread. Overall I still had a very low calorie count yesterday.
I'll be back on South Beach tomorrow after I get paid, though. And my progress is good so far. :) I hope I won't insanely crave bad carbs now that I've had a taste of the forbidden. I also hope there is more free food around today.

Not to brag (OK, to brag) but I have to add more points to my WW maintenance plan since I just lost another pound & a half. That puts me at 1.5 pounds les than my goal, and a total loss of 20.5 pounds. AND it's after a week where I splurged on a free gourmet dinner & desserts and Aunt Flo is visiting (that whore.) What can I say, my body is now a fat burning machine, I can't control it.
No, really though, I'm glad I can have more food, obviously. It's tricky balancing the points out week to week now that it's summer, what with all the cookouts & picnics & beer drinking there is to be done. But I'm determined to do it. As long as I keep up my exercise routine, hopefully I'll be OK.
How's everyone doing? You South Beachers still resisting the carb urge? Jimmy - I got stuck this week on the Cto5K plan - I'm in week 3, and I've been doing great. But for some reason yesterday, I got a massive cramp in my side/abdomen in the middle of the 5 minute jog. I get cramps occasionally, but nothing like this - I was ready to double over. So I walked for about 5 minutes, then tried a 3 minutes jog & 90 second walk etc., and I was finally able to go to a 5 minute jog at the end. But it was really bad - maybe I wasn't breathing right, or I was too dehydrated or something.

Southbeach is going ok. it gets harder and harder to stay away from sugar and white flour and carbs...but Tuesday is the last day for Phase 1 and it can't come soon enough. I'm still about 3 lbs from my goal and it's frustrating me that I haven't lost anymore since my initial lose on this diet where you're supposed to lose 8-10 lbs in Phase 1. argh.
I have been working out 5 times a week hard...last night I did a 50 minute boot camp on FitTV...1 minute of cardio followed by 1 minute of some sort of strength training. put that on repeat for 50 minutes. yeah, it about kicked my ass.
I was told today "don't lose anymore weight" - wtf? how am I supposed to react to that? I just smiled and walked on.

I don't kill myself exercising, but I remember months ago when Amber told me I may have to do cardio longer & more often, and I balked at that. Well, that's exactly what I had to do & it worked (along with tracking my diet more carefully & tweaking my WW points.) I just get up 15 minutes earlier than I used to & do cardio for at least 30 minutes (usually 45) 6 days a week. It's become routine now, not a planned event - wake up, get dressed, work out, eat breakfast, shower. Automatic part of my daily routine.

No big deal, I'm just putting myself back on track & keeping up with the exercise routine.
I hit another snag in the Cto5K routine - tried the 20 minute jog last week, but I got a nasty cramp barely 5 minutes in. Tried to walk it off & start the jog again, but my body wasn't having it. I think I've figured it out - if I have a meal that's larger than usual the night before, I can't run the next day. It's odd, and I don't like it. So, another excuse not to overdo it I suppose.

30-32 is pretty darn small. I don't mind you complaining about your 4 lbs. We all have our goals. Just don't be upset if it turns out you aren't supposed to lose that weight. I thought 32 - 30 was the smallest boys could be. :p And if you are getting toned, really toned, with awesome muscles, those four pounds will mean nothing. Yes, I think muscles and tone are more valuable than non fattitude, but still. 4 lbs is pretty much non fattitude. So get that tone up, rely on your new musclyness to get rid of those lbs, and/or disguise them, and if it doesn't (which I think it will), then totally realize that four lbs coupled with super tone and muscles is pretty much a non entity. If your muscles are popped, that four lbs won't even show. If you still find you can't lose those four lbs for awhile, just pop your muscles out more, do more weights. Trust. Either you will lose the lbs, or no one will be able to tell. Because muscly fat looks goodish.
Muscles. Rule. Pop.
Good job, MopKickah!!!! :xoxo: I wish I could sees you now. Even though you looked fine/beautiful before. Admittedly, though, you didn't look that muscly before. Now you probably do. Jazhands!

getting much better tone in my shoulders that I noticed this week. I was taking my tshirt off to get in the showers and happened to glance at myself (not like that pervs) and saw that the top of my shoulders are getting some good definition. my stomach is getting really flat.
I wonder how that happened......
And I'm with Amber - maybe you're supposed to weight 4 pounds more than you planned.

No offense, but your original goal weight was probably a number you just pulled out of your ass because it sounded good. I'm with Amber and Paula on this one... it's not about the numbers. It's about the way you look and feel (and feel to others too! :p). I would much rather be toned/defined and heavier than be "skinny fat," i.e., thin but soft. Muscle weighs more than fat, and if you are changing your body's composition, you have to take that into consideration.

How is everyone doing with their weight?
I normally just lurk on this thread, but I am proud of myself, so I will share. I have been doing lots of cardio (about an hour a day, at least 6 days a week) and eating better and smaller portions. And, I have lost 32 pounds in the last couple of months. 32 pounds!!!!!
I weighed 230 on April 1st, and I just weighed myself this morning and I weighed 198. I seriously want to celebrate now that I am in the 100's. My ultimate goal weight is 160, but my summer goal is 180. So, I want to lose another twenty pounds before school starts.
I have been eating lots of fruits, meats, cheeses, and eggs. Lots of high protein stuff like omelets for dinner and roast chicken and lunch meats with cheeses. I have been having lots of smoothies for breakfast (homemade, unsweetened- just fruit, water, and ice blended up). Sometimes I have a bowl of special k with a banana chucked in.
I've still been splurging when I really have a craving for something, but I find that I am still losing weight since I have been working out so much. Tonight I had a great cardio workout. I never sweated so much in my life! I used to only be able to power walk on the treadmill, but now I am able to do some running.
I started reading the south beach diet book. I was thinking about doing that to really help me lose more weight, but it sounds like the stupidest diet I have ever heard of. Who wants to cut out fruit and practically all carbs out of their diet? Not me! I certainly don't want to spend the rest of my life not being able to eat yummy things like ice cream and bread. Hell, I am on a diet right now and I have been eating those things and still losing weight! I love food way too much to ever go on a diet plan like that.
Has anyone tried south beach???

that's awesome. congrats. and you're doing it the right way.
I did Phase 1 of South Beach and did not cheat and I think I lost a total of 4 pounds. imo, it wasn't worth it. if you have figured out a diet that works for you that you can continue forever, I'd stick with that. I think I've come to the realization that living by a "diet" whether it's South Beach or Atkins or whatever is really not living at all. it's all about portion control and being aware of what you're eating 95% of the time so you can splurge and enjoy things the other 5%.
as for me, I'm still working out and trying to watch what I eat. the past week has been really exhausting with work and other stuff so I've slacked on the exercise, but I'm going to get back on track this week. haven't gained a pound, but I haven't lost a pound either - so...can't complain.

Congrats to everyone that has stayed on track and has either reached goal or are still losing!
It's good to see that this thread is still alive and well. I have lost a total to date, 28 lbs., with Weight Watchers. I was 140 and I am now 112! I haven't been this light since I was a teenager. I have greatly surpassed my goal weight of 125, but the weight just keeps coming off. I'm eating so fricken healthy, it's sickening . WW made me get a note from my doctor, saying that this was a healthy weight to maintain or they wouldn't honour my Lifetime Membership! Bastards  I know 112 sounds light, but I am only 5'4" and have been slim all my life. My parents were thin and all my sister's are thin. So it's not that far out there. I am still running 30 minutes every morning (on the treadmill), 5-6 days a week.
Cutting out the fat and portion control has really worked for me. As far as South Beach or any of those other low carb diets. They suck! I've tried them all and there is NO WAY I'm cutting out bread!
amber

^^^ That is awesome! I can see you weighing that little.
I like South Beach, it works well for me. I have more energy when my blood sugar doesn't do the dips from simpl carbs, and I get less cravings. I like bread and stuff, too, but I don't find SB too difficult. I always kind of had that type of blood sugar anyway, that didn't do well with simple carbs. So for me it is more natural.
Aaaand, I gained two lbs in Chico. But my nickname there was LushyMcStoner, so I'm not really suprised....basically I drank waaay too much, and we ate out a lot. And rode around in the car rather than biking. I swam a lot, but not enough to counteract all the cocktails.

I thought sure I'd finally killed this thread. Good to know everyone's still on track!
I agree with Jaz. Personally, I wouldn't want to resort to a fad type diet (or any diet at all for that matter.) We shouldn't be thinking "diet" because if you stop that diet, you will gain the weight back eventually. I've focused more on changing the way I eat & exercise in a way that I can continue for the rest of my life. Nothing drastic, and I haven't cut anything completely out of my diet. Life's too short not to drink beer. Weight Watchers basically taught me how to eat, and now I'm on maintenance. It's become natural for me to eat more fruits & veggies & protein & fiber, and fewer simple carbs - I don't even have to think about it anymore.
My total loss ended up being 20.5 pounds in about 7 months (13 of those pounds were lost in the final 2 months after I made some adjustments, thanks to Theresa. I love that once I started eating a little more, the weight just fell off!) My original goal was to lose 14 pounds, so I'm pretty thrilled. I went from a size 12/14 jean to an 8/10, and from a M/L shirt to a S.
I have held steady between 134 & 136 for the past 2 months, despite the usual increase in eating & drinking that comes along with summer/cookouts/camping/etc. Like Jimmy, I've just been adamant about staying on track with working out & I really think that's the key. I can't tell you how great it feels when people tell me they've noticed I lost weight, or how flat my stomach is, or that I have great muscle definition in my arms & legs. I have so much energy now, I just feel great. So yeah. I'm a happy girl. :)
And Theresa - your sig is stunningly beautiful, despite the extra pounds we were packing. We should do another one soon - this time, wearing bikinis. :wavey:

A friend just told me about this site. Very cool - you can either search for a walking/running/biking route in your area, or map out a route you usually take & it will give you the mile totals. Enter your full address in the box on the left & it will bring up a map of your hood. On the right, click the symbols to map out your route (the dot is your starting point, the arrow is to click on different points on your route {you have to click at intersections if you're making a turn}) You may have to play around with it at first, but it's easy once you get the hang of it. I think I'll see how far it is to run to Canada, eh?

when i'm not being a slacker and stick with my routine, i use EAS's myoplex. i typically go for the chocolate or strawberry because the vanilla is kind of nast. i do not add any liquid supplements at all... it has a decent amount of nutritional value. just mix the packet with water or skim milk (skim milk tastes way better than with water), or, for a treat, you can make it into a milkshake with sugarfree vanilla ice cream. many times, i'll put a banana in as well.
the regular myoplex has - i think - about 350 calories and 4.5 grams of fat or so. there is myoplex lite, which has about half of that.
ugh, i need to get back on that ****.

Damn you're hard core. I'm still "only" down the 15 lbs. But I swear the weight training is what's done it for me. I'm an 8/10 too but I still weigh 147. I got smaller without losing more weight. Haha, nice location. I like it too, my social life has just picked up a bit. Playing kickball, or hanging with kickballers! So it's hard to get to the gym sometimes whereas it would be a lot easier to jump on the elliptical at home for 1/2 hr. After I move I'll look into getting one second hand.
It took me a long time to like the weight training. A loooong time. But I'm finally there although I have to sometimes push myself through it. I always feel so good when I'm done! That's what I tell myself on those hard days.

Thought I'd just chip in here.
Been a while since I posted on this thread as I don't come here much these days.
Since the end of February until now I've shed 56 lbs so far. My waist was gradually expanding over the last few years due to always looking after the interests of others and neglecting myself. So now I'm all about me first. I've gone from XXL to XL to L and now I'm in Medium sizes in shirts and from nearly a 44" waist to a 36" now. Need to get another 15 to 20lbs off and I'll be really trim. No big secret to it apart from eating properly and at the right times. I tend to eat grilled meats, eat pasta and salads during the weekdays and drink plenty of water and white or green tea. I walk a hell of a lot too now, probably 10-15 miles a week in total which helps.
I do feel really good. My skin looks so much more vibrant and yes I'm getting a serious load of attention from the ladies too, theres at least 3 or 4 here giving me the come on! haha. I even turned the head of a stunning blonde on Saturday night when she was getting into a car with her husband. I did look rather slick though :D . I gave her a smile and a wink and got an even bigger grin back.. lol
I can vouch for Suze's regime too. Seen her literally turn from a good looking and attractive woman into an, erm, very dangerous woman!  In fact I've heard the Boston ER rooms need extra staff to cope with the local dudes passing out when Suze hits the town... ;) haha.

I get a lot of glances and smiles from girls in town but for a guy its ok i think. Having said that I don't dress like anybody else here. I wear a lot of fitted clothing now which I think always makes a guy look good and I've just bought a leather jacket which gets more looks than I do! haha. :D
But as a girl I would imagine its a bit offputting. Having a drooling moron or a sweaty hairy assed worker staring down your tits. Can't be fun. Do "hot" guys do this too or is it just the dreamers and fantasy merchants that stare?
Younger guys do it because they are trying to take in all that visual information and have a MS Windows style freeze while the information gets processed. Older guys do it out of wishful thinking perhaps.

I even turned the head of a stunning blonde on Saturday night when she was getting into a car with her husband. I did look rather slick though . I gave her a smile and a wink and got an even bigger grin back.. lol
I can vouch for Suze's regime too. Seen her literally turn from a good looking and attractive woman into an, erm, very dangerous woman!  In fact I've heard the Boston ER rooms need extra staff to cope with the local dudes passing out when Suze hits the town... haha.
That's great Justin! Sounds like you did it the tirght way - wathing what you eat, increasing your activity & taking your time. Good for you. Have you posted any recent pics on Myspace? I'd like to see the new you. ;) And I can vouch after seeing her in person - Suze really is one hot bitch.
I have a photographic memory so a quick glance is all thats required!
Well, first of all, I doubt they're staring at my tits - you may have missed the memo about most of my weight apparently coming off in that area.  And secondly, it seems to be both hot guys and gross guys that look. Seems the hot guys are more apt to give a quick glance, maybe a nod or a smile, which I'm cool with. I get the stares from the out of shape slob in the stained Tshirt & torn sweatpants. Lucky me.
BTW - for those who care, I just completed week 7 of the Couch to 5K running plan. I now take a brisk 5 minute walk & then jog for 25 minutes, 3 times a week. Never thought I'd be able to do that. Never. A coworker & I are planning on jogging in the annual Linda Yalem run, which honors one of the women killed by the Bike Path Rapist.

Yeah I've made a lifestyle change, not a diet. If you approach fitness and weight loss by thinking I'm going to stop doing X to lose X pounds then it won't work. Its a case of looking at ways to make a change for the better. No pics yet, well my profile pic is new. I'll post some this weekend after my night out tonight! :D

Sorry the weight has gone from, erm, there. lol. But I know a few women that have lost a bit of weight lately and all of them pretty much have lost it on the chest. FOr better or worse!

Back on topic, I did "Hip Hop Abs" with some former coworkers the other morning. It's tough, but a good workout. OK, I don't know you, I don't know what your problem is with me. All I did was let you know you spelled someone's name incorrectly, it's not a big deal & I wasn't trying to be rude. Apparently you were upset enough by it that you felt the need to point out that I typed something wrong, and repeatedly shout at me about it. Good for you. Congratulations. Like I said, ya got me! Well I never had a problem with you, but it was pretty obvious that you were the rude one from the beginning with your bullying! If you feel that all you did was "let me know that I spelled something wrong" - you could have done that via PM! That stuff doesn't fly with me, as I'm here enjoying a GREAT board and meeting a LOT of new, great friends!! .. Maybe as someone else just said, when people are 'new" to different boards some of the others feel it's their job to make the new ones feel un-welcome. Whatever the case is, I'm way too old to get into any sort of "pissing contest" with anyone, and don't participate in that sort of thing! Look I can appreciate feeling like Steviefan was spoiling for a fight, and certainly the way to make friends in here is not by being so ready and willing to get involved in one, but what the hell is this "We are Ledgies and we are not nice" crap? You're kidding me, right? This was meant to get a laugh, right?
Plenty of Ledgies are nice, and most of them are at the very least civil. Certainly most of them have the sense not to say somthing this silly and overdramatic.
On the board, you BOTH need to adopt a more civil tone, or of course ignore each other. You two have anything else to say to each other, do it in a PM. And of course there's always this: http://ledge.fleetwoodmac.net/faq.php?faq=vb_board_usage#faq_new_faq_item

^^^I'm not sure what paula meant, but i took it as a reference to stevie's quote "we are rock stars, we are not nice". So I don't think any harm was meant by that.
"nice" can be broken down on so many levels. I realize it's your job to stop arguments from happening, but since we are talking about "nice", it's not nice when someone goes into a forum they are not used to, says something and everyone ignores them. Or starting a thread and no one responds. That's not nice. In the place of "This is NOT 7W. We do NOT pussyfoot around. We tell it like it is. If you perceive that as bullying, then maybe this isn't the place for you. We are Ledgies. And we are not nice." had paula said "this is not 7W, prepare to be ignored for the first 6 months of your existence here then someone might respond to you....but by god, we are such nice people. Let's have a group hug" would that have been a problem?
I guess it's all in perception. I perceive telling someone like it is, plain language, easy to understand, no beating around the bush much more satisfying than not knowing what the hell is going on and wondering where I stand, but eh. that's just me.
sorry if i broke any of the rules. I didn't intend to. This just seemed to be an interesting convo. Which is hard to come by around here anymore :)

I saw the infomercial for that at the gym and it looked pretty fun. But expensive for a workout video, of course they throw in all kinds of extras though. It's also, as we say around here, "wicked cheesy". I'll have to see if there are other more reasonably priced hip hop workouts out there, or even just dance lessons on vid. I always thought it would be so fun to learn those moves. Then I'll be pretty fly for white girl.

Had the comment been made amongst two people who were having a good time kidding around, as it has in the past, I would agree. But you are assuming that everyone knows the quote. If someone doesn't, it looks like a pretty nasty thing to say. And up until this point in the conversation, Paula didn't seem to be joking around. Is it so hard for you to understand that your inside jokes may not be well recieved by others?
I also pretty much conceeded that Steviefan looked to be looking for a fight, didn't I?
I intervened to stop this from escalating, which is what it seemed to be doing. No more no less. If anyone has any more concerns about my intervention, I would be happy to discuss it further in PM, but lets keep this out of the thread, eh?

I truly do like the Kashi cereals I've tried. They are very crunchy, though, like Jaz said, so if you like soggy cereal, they're not for you. The Go Lean is the best as far as Weight Watchers points go. Go Lean Crunch is good too. There's a newer one too - Vive or something like that? Yum!
The key is they're packed with fiber & protein so they keep you full for a long time, like Ricky said. They're very flavorful, but not sweet. The Kashi oatmeal is tasty, but the Quaker Weight Control is just as good & cheaper to boot.

I'm holding steady...we are entering wedding season and I want to look svelte so I'm cracking down on my eating and stepping up my exercise. my birthday month is over so there's no more excuse for Whitman sampler boxes in my office.

No.
Actually my diet has gone to crap - but I'm not living the sedentary life I was in Rochester - so I've managed to not gain. My pants still fit and I'm not jiggling around...so that's really all I can hope for with the way my diet's been as of late!
I lost the gym when I moved - but I bike a lot now and have been going on some walks and hikes - and staying active - so right now I'm happy with that though will start to be more careful with what I eat too...

My friend and I just left the gym. Did a 15 minute run, worked biceps, triceps, and abs. It went well! :)

I've lost another 3lbs this week. So that's 65 in total now since March. :)
Been pretty good lately and not eaten any junk food for quite a while.. I'm saving up my "junk quota" for next month... ;)

Thanks. :)
It was just time for a lifestyle change. I haven't really dieted or anything, or exercised like crazy either. Just started eating and drinking healthier stuff and I walk a lot then it just dropped off. I want another 10 lbs too then I'll be happy with that. But I'm pretty much trim and fit now

Yeah it should be fine. I'm on target to get another 5 or 6 of them before my vacation. Oh, it won't go back on. I don't miss my old lifestyle and I don't crave anything. If I want something I eat it. I just balance it now. No chance of it returning because I'm not forcing myself to miss anything I want.
