Default Stevie and Lindsey

Ok I was thinking today if the Fleetwood Mac gig did not happen with them,If Mick did not make that very history making phone call and did not invite them to sign on,Would the Buckingham/Nicks combo give it another shot recording a new album or Stevie and Lindsey will go their own ways Stevie will be waiting on tables or being some ones cleaning lady and continue college to become a teacher,Lindsey probably will become a famous record producer. That if they throw in the towel in on singing.I can Stevie being a country singer under the name Stephanie Lynn Nicks,Oh that sounds so country and pretty and also I had to add the Nicks part because of Loretta Lynn,She will be hot up there with Linda Ronstadt,Dolly Parton,Emmlou Harris,Kenny Rogers.Hahaha sorry anti country fans.or Stevie will be like her 1980's solo tunes ,6 years earlier

Buckingham Nicks had a big back catalogue of music at that point already. They were starting to catch on in the deep South (Alabama). I believe they were working on Buckingham Nicks II when they were asked to join Fleetwood Mac. They would have continued in the music business had they not joined Fleetwood Mac, I'm quite sure. How successful they would have been, that's anybody's guess.

I tend to think it was the combination of the 3 voices, the fantastic rhythm section, and the whole dual couples allure made Fleetwood Mac (and in turn, Buckingham and Nicks) famous. The established Fleetwood Mac name certainly didn't hurt: it was a familiar entity to the public. Obviously Buckingham Nicks only had 2 voices, only 1 couple, and no amazing rhythm section. I just don't think they had the capability to explode on the scene without the backing of Fleetwood Mac.

Everyone around here seems to think Stevie would have made it on her own. I disagree heartily. She was WAY, WAY too raw of a talent. Who would have signed her and taken her under their wing and developed her? She was essentially a failed entity at that point. She could only clank a couple chords on a piano, murder a couple chords on a guitar. She was just one of 10 million other pretty girl singer songwriters around in the '70s. Unlike Carole King, Carly Simon, Joni Mitchell, et al she had no instrumental talents either (except apparently with the skin flute, but I digress... ). Stevie NEEDED Lindsey Buckingham to develop her talent: to take her 16 minute meandering wanderings and whittle them into viable songs. She needed the backing of the Fleetwood Mac name, and the major record label deal they had. Sorry guys, Stevie wouldn't have made it without Fleetwood Mac.

I gotta agree with that: they probably wouldn't have hit it big at all and probably would have gone on in obscurity. For all we know, they could have gotten married, but they probably wouldn't have gotten anywhere.

BTW, no offense, but what does skin flute mean?

Yes, Stevie did a lot of business in her day. Call it "The Phallus Sessions."

I don't know. Record companies were so different back then - they actually developed artists and took a lot of time doing that. I agree she needed Lindsey though and without him it's possible her music would have never been heard by the ears of someone who could hear any potential. But, if they had, she had as much of a shot as anyone. Let's face it - you don't even have to have talent to "make it" - it's just all about being in the right place at the right time and if you happen to have some talent then that's just icing on the proverbial marketing cake...

I agree with you, especially on this point. It was the chemistry of those 5 members that propelled them to their massive success. Right place, right time, right people.... the stars just aligned.
