Besides Stevie, I know that ‘Modern Records released albums by Sandy Stewart and Rick Vito (and I think one by Natalie Cole) – but whatever happened to the label afterwards?
Is it true that it was sold to one of Michael Jackson’s brothers? If so, did he sell off/dissolve the label afterwards? |

That's exactly what happened.....Atlantic retained all the rights to the catalog, but Stevie's output was the only stuff that stayed around more than a year or two after release, so that's not saying much!

Randy Jackson bought Modern Records in 1998 from Stevie I want to say its no longer a label any more but not sure.
In 1998 Randy set up his own record label called 'Modern Records'. The same year he and his brothers planned for the Jackson's to produce another album called "J5" with all of them including Michael and Jermaine. However, the following year when it was officially announced, Michael chose not to participate and the record was never made. |

Randy Jackson also had a deal with Tiffany (as a "comeback" album) to release something on the Modern label, but it never happened. It was her "The Color of Silence" album that was eventually released in 2000 and was released on the Elektra label. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Color_of_Silence
Modern Records went public under Randy Jackson, you could buy stock in the company, but only as an OTC stock (Over The Counter). I almost bought some stock, it was super cheap as most OTC stock is, but never did. It went under fast. After Jackson took over, Modern Records used to have a website for about a year and it listed all of there business dealings on it. I used to check it from time to time. I could only remember the Tiffany album and the Jacksons album listed as current projects. |

Both Priest of Nothing and StandBackStevie are discussing a different, unrelated Modern Records, not the defunct Modern Records established by Stevie Nicks, Paul Fishkin and Danny Goldberg.

I don't think so. Randy Jackson took over Stevie and Paul Fishkin's Modern Records label around 1997. The Modern Records website stated that the label had previously released all of Stevie's solo catalog.
There was a different Modern Records established in the 1950's that was unrelated to Stevie, but Randy Jackson definitely took over Stevie's "Modern Records" label around 1997. Actually, he was appointed to the Board of Directors of Stevie and Paul Fishkin's label in 1997. There are many articles on the net about it such as: http://findarticles.com/p/articles/m...4/ai_19207577/ But he later took over the label completely after Stevie fulfilled her contract by releasing "Enchanted". I was just doing some reading on Modern Records the other day. I was surprised that there were some records released by the label before Stevie. There is even a reggae album! http://www.bsnpubs.com/atlantic/modernrecords.html That webpage says "each individual label was a custom design", but it looks like only Stevie got custom record labels. Everybody else got a generic one. ![]() ![]() ![]() |
