After hearing Stevie's voice at the Hollywood Bowl the other night and after
listening to "At Last" again recently, I realized that her voice is really well suited for jazz and torch song singing. Wouldn't it be cool if she recorded some tracks in this style? She seems to have such incredible control as a jazz or blues singer and I bet she would do a project like this with renewed enthusiasm. I know countless other singers have done this before, but with the right producers and really genius song selections, it could be really spectacular. And think of the tour that could follow. On a related note - are there any recordings of "When Sunny Gets Blue" from the Stormy Weather show? I'd love to hear it. |

ITA! You failed to mention "Cathouse Blues." One of my all-time faves!

I've thought for about the past 15 years or so that it would be really cool if Stevie did an album of "standards" - jazz or otherwise.
But I happen to love old torch songs and some of my other favorite older lady singers from the '70's have gone this path. I always thought it was neat what Stevie did at the Stormy Weather shows and daydream about what an album of Stevie singing these kinds of songs would be like. I think it would be an appropriate choice for her at this point in her career, with no pressure of "writing hits" or anything like that. Of course, a live album has made sense forever - FM has done 3 since she joined the band 30 years ago and solo she has done -0-. But that's not the topic here. So yes, I would love an album of standards... ballads, torch songs, ditties.... Mr. Sandman... bring me a dream..... Hey Daddy, you've got to get the best for me! I've got a crush on you.... sweetie pie.... (and just think about the wardrobe possibilites!)

oh..
i'm a little slow. not sure if Cathouse qualifies. it's a little too shrill for me. but i'm really loving Stevie's voice this year. One reviewer yesterday said she came off as "blues-mama" which ITA. i think Janis Joplin is smiling down on Stevie this week. Stop Draggin My Heart Around has a whole new sound, I think. It's sort of become a great slow-burner of a song. |

But she wrote Cathouse Blues, key word there being "blues." It qualifies!
I think the shrillness is coming from our crappy quality demos. With her deeper voice these days, it would be gorgeous! |
