Default Melbourne or Sydney

A few years ago I had a chance to go to Australia for 2 weeks and I discovered that there's qute a rivalry between these 2 cities. I'm just curious as to the origins of this? For the Record I'm a Melbourne man.

I liked Sydney too, its just that there was something that appealed to me about the understatedness of melbourne.

Sydney is my favourite city...but I'm a New South Welshman (the State). Sydney is beautiful, you have the centre of Sydney and then you just have this huuge expanse of park...I love going when ever I can.

Then again I have never been to Melbourne though.

Melbourne was the original seat of colonial government in Australia. The federation ceremony in 1901 with Queen Victoria took place in Melbourne. Melbourne was also close to the major goldfields of the 19th century, that brought so many people and nationalities to Australia. I guess in some ways Melbourne still reflects that cultural diversity more than any other Australian city ... for example, there are more Greeks in Melbourne than in any other city outside Greece itself.

But as the other colonies grew and eventually decided to become states and federate, Sydney had also become a viable choice for the national capital. So the city of Canberra, geographically somewhere between Melbourne and Sydney, was born.

Oh forget Melbourne and Sydney....Perth is where the action is!

That was obviously a joke! I've never been to either.

They're fun to visit (although I haven't been to Melbourne since I was a kid), but I'd much rather live in Brisbane, or perhaps Perth, Adelaide, etc. My sister lives in Perth these days. And it's always on the travel channel here!!

Well yes Melbourne was where the original parliament was...but Sydney was the first City and always has been the biggest...Melbourne is only second biggest city because of Gold Rush...if there was no gold rush, Parramatta would be the second biggest.

I wouldnt dream of it. I hate that patronizing attitude that some tourists take when they visit a foreign country
