Yeah, I'm not liking this trend. It's kinda like when Sheryl Crow wrote "It's Only Love" for Stevie, and then turned around and recorded a BETTER version herself on her next album.

Again a complete matter of opinion..Stevie's visceral stripped down and knowing version which also happened to feature her best vocal on TISL in comparison with
Sheryl's overproduced midtempo take on C'mon C'mon which is much more forgettable IMO .

Oh, I love Stevie's version of "It's Only Love" very much. I think "Cheaper Than Free" is a totally different situation simply because it doesn't SEEM like the song is going to mesh with the rest of the album very well. I feel like she wanted to through in a duet with Dave and was like, "ooh, here we go! A song we've already recorded that I like for its simplicity and slight corniness!"

No one kill me please.

Although I enjoy both songs very much, and Secret Love has a ridiculous amount of plays on my iTunes, I'm going with Cheaper Than Free, there's something about it that I can't help but love. It's just so relaxed and lovely.

I totally agree with Louie on this one. I loved Sheryl Crows version of this song. She only rerecorded it because Gymneth Paltrow talked her into it and man did she make it better.

Agreed! All a matter of taste, but Stevie's version has much more depth. Stevie's mature voice alone, as well as interpreting those lyrics Sheryl wrote with Stevie in mind, make the song stand out on TISL. Sheryl's version w/Gwyneth singing harmony, is nice and palatable, but nothing special, and comes nowhere close to packing the wallop that Stevie's voice and the stripped down arrangement give the song.

On Topic. It's really hard to decide based on these 2 songs being virtually opposite in style and I love both. But Secret Love has the upper hand. I still have yet to tire of it. Believe it or not, it's still growing on me, even after having the demo all these years. CTF is catchy as all get out tho and the music is superb
