I don't think this is a song about Stevie just wanting sex. I think this is Stevie embracing the fact that some love stories are short stories, but love stories all the same. I assume it is about Mick and I think over time she developed this secret love for him and she felt very much in love with him. I think then at some point they had sex and this is where this song came from. I think after having sex, she wanted more. She wanted a relationship. She wanted love. And Mick probably told her they couldn't have a relationship because it wouldn't work. He was married, Lindsey may get jealous, it may tear Fleetwood Mac apart, and so on. Therefore, they couldn't be anything more than friends. "But we've already passed it" she cries... she tells him they have already passed the point of being more than friends, so why not embark on this relationship? Why not enjoy this love? She knows it won't work out in the end, but she isn't asking forever from him, she's just asking to be held for a while.

Secret Love could mean affair that no one knows is going on or it could mean it started out as sexual liason and she fell in and out love and he doesn't know it. Whatever the case, he was too much work and it's over.

I think Secret Love is about Stevie and Lindsey having relationship issues while they were supporting/recording Buckingham Nicks. We know that they were having some problems before they joined FM in 75. When I listen to this song I think about the frustrated Lindsey trying to make their music work while Stevie works to keep them alive. Certainly these problems only made their relationship more difficult to survive. They just needed some rest.

Hah I expected that response. Usually I'm not so cheesy about SnL, but I just get that vibe. We know the song was written in the 70s, so it could be plausible right?

That is was secret?? Is that what you're trying to get out of me. I just see it as Stevie trying to be dramatic. I also guess that Mick is a possibility. Whatever, I love the song anyway.

On a slightly unrelated note, I just wanted to say that I hadn't listened to Secret Love for awhile (12 hours or so), and just put it on again, and I'm totally loving it!!!! Again!!!!

Silly sleep-deprived thought:
Is the last line "my secret loves secretly, secretly died"? If that plural is correct, I have this marvellous image of Stevie as a serial killer, hunting down all her "secret loves" and murdering them ![]() |
