Default Don't Come Around Here Anymore

I thought I saw an interview on here about "Don''t come around here" and Stevie said that it was supposed to be her song and that she laid the vocals down in studio. I'm I having another pipe dream or was this accurate AND if so does anyone have a copy of her doing the vocals???

It's all true. It was going to be on Rock A Little, lead vocals by Stevie. In one of the Dave Stewart threads, someone posted a link where Dave shared his recollections of that song and its genesis. Stevie thought it would be fair to give it back to Tom, although her uncredited backing vocals remain on the song.

Tom also talks about it all on one of his many documentaries.

I just saw this in the Running Down a Dream documentary. Jimmy was getting frustrated with Stevie because she couldn't write the Lyrics. She wanted Tom to write them. Once he did he wanted to keep the song.

I've never heard that she ever actually recorded lead vocals for the song, though I definitely hear her on background vocals for Tom. Who knows? Basically, as with most things Stevie, there seems to be several variations on the story of why Stevie didn't do the song and why Tom did it.

And why didn't she even sing on it when she did a few concerts with Tom Petty in 1985?

Come on--let's hear some explanations.

As always, I believe everything works out for a reason in the end. Stevie was having writers block with the verses (and that rarely happens for her esp. during the RAL era - she had plenty to say during this time.) So Iovine and her turn to Petty for help, he finishes and records it...Stevie gets pissed and tells Petty to keep it & that was fine with me.

While "Don't Come Around Here No More" is a ok song, am I the only one that finds it a little droning and somewhat boring? aside from the sitar flourishes and the cello breakdown the song goes nowhere (I think the music video elevated it tremendously back then). Bottom line I was never crazy about this song & more importantly I cannot picture Stevie doing it better justice. I generally am not a huge fan of Stevie covering other writers material, but I much prefer "Talk To Me" over DCAHNM anyday!

For me its much more fascinating that "Don't Come Around Here No More" represents the final straw in Stevie & Iovine's working relationship. The drama that ensued around this song was as Stevie puts it in the above video clip, when she "FIRED" Iovine as producer and thus finished the RAL record with an injection of other producers and writers. Very Interesting indeed.

During the early sessions of RAL or Mirror Mirror in 84' its common knowledge that Iovine was deliberately looking for the next big hit for Stevie ala SDMHA & Stand Back and didn't think that Stevie had the makings of it left to her own devices. Hence his insistence for her to record Zevon's "Reconsider Me" & the Bruce Springsteen throwaway "Don't Lose Heart" as well as collaborate with Dave Stewart. I find it interesting that even though Stevie may have been disheartened by Iovines lack of confidence in her writing and direction at this point, that after they parted ways Stevie ended up releasing her most co-written record to date in RAL. That was a big deal for Stevie Nicks fans at the time. Only having 3 sole writing credits on RAL freaked out a lot of die hard fans including me. It left us all wondering what happened to the mad prolific songwriter. Obviously this was the beginning of Stevie having tremendous pressure on her to become a hit factory and somewhat lose focus and suffer self doubt.

Fame is a roller coaster and just as corrosive as drug and alcohol abuse & in Stevie's case she was riding all 3 full tilt during this time & her career & voice would never again be the same afterwards. This was a pivotal time in Stevie career, which is why I find it to be the most fascinating era of Stevie Nicks ever.

Thank you soo much for posting this! Didn't even know it was meant to be a Stevie song in the beginning, that's cool. Stevie's harmony on the song is so good. Chills!
