She's not an "I" or "me" person. She doesn't look at herself in the mirror to look for flaws. Rather, she turns the mirror on others and only occasionally peeks in it just to see whether her lipstick needs to be retouched.

So what are "introspective" Stevie songs? There aren't too many, I suspect...

"Doing the Best I Can"
"Landslide"
"Storms"
???
Ha ha, the fun never stop's around here.

My only prob with Stevie's style of introspection is when it get way too literal.
"Well I talked to my famous friend last night
My third day up...well, his second nighter"
.....Cause heck, who the hell can't relate to that.

Also "Bella Donna" ," "HAEWAFY", "Ghosts", & "I Miss You" are introspective in a self absorbed kind of way.

"Landslide" is unique because 1. it was written by Stevie pre-stardom, 2. it touches upon universal themes 3. was written beautifully in a simple yet non trite fashion which makes it accessible to everyone. It's funny how an unassuming song, buried on FM self-titled album that was never a single, till it was released 22 or so years later in 97' , while even then it did not make it to the Top 40 pop singles chart, will become (I believe) the most beloved song that Stevie Nicks is famous for overall.

Of course, you do always hope for a Carlos Santana long shot. I was reading an interview with Macy Gray and she was saying that she couldn't get the popular producers today to return her calls. She said she doesn't know why the record companies think only young people buy records. She also pointed to Susan Boyle and said that proves that there's a need out there that needs to be filled.

Certainly, if Stevie made a memorable appearance on a popular tv show, she could have a fluke hit.

Cher basically put lightning in a bottle with Believe. The style, the look, the songs, and most importantly, the over-the-top TV AMA appearance which was not unlike Michael Jackson at the Apollo (in terms of exposure, that is). And Tina Turner, who was also considered back in the day to be "ancient" (at the ripe old age of 45!) also had one of those defining TV moments (which I now forget...). So what did Cher, Michael and Tina have in common? They could dance (or in Cher's case, get lifted around a lot). Stevie is not a dancer. She doesn't wear outrageously sexy costumes or sparkly wigs. And she doesn't even really work an audience in an overt manner. She's actually a bit aloof and quietly dramatic; she doesn't even make eye contact most of the time. Clean and sober, she is no longer giving heel-splittingly intense performances. At the end of the day, she's a legendary, well-respected older singer-songwriter with a unique, idiosyncratic voice with technical limitations. Either you get her or you don't. I don't think she is going to start wearing gauzy shawls and feathers in her hair again anytime soon in an effort to tart up her image for a mainstream audience.

michelej1, I concur with the points you make. Today's market is most definitely youth-oriented and the likes of Tina and Cher would really battle to make an impression on the charts in the current musical environment.
Have you heard the latest Macy Gray album "The Sellout"? It's fantastic - best thing she's done hands down. Absolutely no filler whatsoever - brilliant. I heard her interviewed recently as well and she reiterated what you mention about her being persona non grata in the music industry. I'm sure that will all turn around now that she 's being critiqued well for the album and it seems poised to shift more than a few units.
Speaking of Macy, I'm still pissed off with Stevie for not recording the song she wrote for her - "Smitten" - in 1999. Macy spoke of it in Rolling Stone magazine at the time and was all set to go into the studio with Stevie to record it. Stevie passed on it and Macy ended up doing backing vocals on "Bombay Sapphires" as we all know (not that you can actually hear her!). "Smitten" was eventually recorded by Rod Stewart, albeit with a lacklustre arrangement - certainly not what Macy had envisaged for Stevie, having spoken of an extravagant, over-the-top Queen like production. Despite this, it's still a great little song and contains the cute lyric "allow me to introduce myself, I am smitten". Sweet Macy.

I don't quite agree with some of those songs as being "introspective." To me, "introspective" means that the songwriter is sharing with the audience some kind of truth that haunts him/her to the core. "Landslide" is Stevie's version of Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now"- these precocious world-weary pearls of aged wisdom written by 20-something ingenues. In it, Stevie muses on her fear of getting older and her fear of failure. In "Doing the Best I Can," she reveals the most chilling lyric ever written about herself: "In my way, disaster was the only thing that I could depend on..." In "Storms" she admits again her self-destructive/dysfunctional tendencies when it comes to romantic relationships. She is quite the enigma otherwise. As she likes to call it, she writes in "code" most of the time.

I was wondering about this as well. I assumed it was meant to be a joke but Jesus, I would just about pass out if she has recorded it. I adored the demo and always thought it would have made a great Mac song and frankly, was surprised it didn't make it onto the "Say You Will" album. I think Dave would get off on the lyrics too, despite Stevie not having written them.

I seem to recall that she is the one playing the violin parts in the "Everybody Loves You" demo.

If Annabel Lee merits inclusion in this upcoming collection, I think we should all fear the worst. That was not a good song by any measure.

I kinda dug it too. It needs tweaking, but it could be cool.

Haha, we don't seem to agree on much, but I respect your opinions.
I do think "Annabel Lee" needs some polishing (the demo arrangement is dull) but the lyrics are brilliant and clearly Stevie identifies closely with them. I also love that she doesn't alter the gender when she speaks of lying down with her bride. If properly arranged and produced, this could become a masterpiece in my humble opinion - I obviously dream on a large scale!

And if Mike Campbell and Steve Ferrone are involved, perhaps it's not too far of a leap to assume that Benmont Tench got sucked into the project too, which would also seem to suggest a sound in the direction of BD and WH.
I think Mike Rowe is on keys.

Rickey Peterson is also a keyboardist. From facebook:

Finished in LA with Stevie! Her songs are really good and the band kicked arse!!! Good to be home and ready for what the summer brings!

I like that first word...finished! Peterson was on the Crystal Visions tour. Stevie said he "brings back the sound of Bella Donna." And I'm pretty sure he was also the guy who she said reminded her of Christine.

So, he was in the studio or he was rehearsing for the live shows?
