Here's a funny story (true, apparently) from 1939:
The British and Americans were out at sea, on a collision course. The messages read (pretty much) thusly:
British - American fleet, adjust your bearings by 15 degrees to the north to avoid collision.
Americans - No, you adjust your bearings by 15 degrees to the north.
British - Please adjust by 15 degrees north.
Americans - Our Fleet comprises destroyers, cargo ships and several other smaller vessels. It will be too difficult for us to adjust our course. If you do not adjust your course by 15 degrees north, we will be forced to take further action.
British - We are a lighthouse. F*** off.
