They sell them in Islamic clothing boutiques for ladies. They conceal the arms for modesty.

I remember seeing a woman wearing them too when I was in Egypt. I was walking along the Nile, it was night time and very hot. This young woman and her husband were taking a stroll, and I saw her reach for a soft drink she purchased from a street vendor. Her black cloak briefly parted and out came a slender, long arm wrapped in a tight black sleeve. I remember feeling sorry for her, how hot she must have been. But, I don't think the women feel the same way. I think they feel safer concealed under layers.

I think she's wearing these boot/shoe things to try to please US (the fans). I remember reading an interview where she couldn't believe what a big deal the boots were to people. So, I think it is very sweet she goes to such extremes for us!! I also love the fingerless glove things--they're awesome. Stevie will always rock her fashion imo.

As far as the arthritic disease, I did read where she had Epstein Barr syndrome (not sure of spelling). This may have bearing on how she feels from time to time. It's not arthritic, but it's a chronic fatigue-type illness.

That's silly. Why would she think that a thick sole like that would please her fans? They aren't even close to the real thing. A regular-sized heeled boot (with a separate, distinct heel) would make more sense if she were trying to pay homage to the platforms.

If her problems are due to mobility, then she should wear a flat boot. Better yet, give up the the uptempo numbers and perform introspective, deep, poignant ballads on a stool while telling stories. She could strum some chords now and then, look pretty and chit chat with Waddy or some other accompanist.

I was thinking maybe she has rheumatoid arthritis or some other degenerative bone issue as I was walking home from work tonight. Ever notice Stevie's crookedy-looking fingers? Also, I thought that her skin looked very dry (especially in her decollatage area) when I saw her at Barnes and Noble for her DVD signing. I worked with a lady with severe, severe RA and the steroids she took made her skin leathery.

I was just popped in Soundstage while cleaning my house, and she looks GREAT in that... I'm not just talking about the boots, but the whole outfits, hair, and she is moving around great (high leg kicks and all)...

Such a good DVD, makes cleaning more tolerable for sure...

If you watch her entrance on the Jimmy Fallon show, when she's walking out towards him, she's got the boots on, and she puts her hand out towards Jimmy, and says (read her lips) "help me up". That first step up onto the stage looked a little strenuous for her.. So I can see her having a lift... there's a good half flight of stairs to the stage I'm sure.

It was someone who works for Live Nation who told me about the special "Stevie lift" (as he called it). He was backstage and at the rehearsals at The O2 in Dublin and saw it first hand. He also told me they use a special soft focus on her close-ups on the big screens at the shows, which amused me.

There are various types of arthritis, not just one kind. Osteoarthritis is degenerative and most closely associated with old age or excessive wear and tear on the joints. There are a couple of famous ballet dancers for instance who have had to have hip or knee replacements while still in their 40's and 50's for example. I could easily see how she could have developed it from banging the hell out of that tamborine and dancing like a woman possessed while balanced on platform boots!

But that doesn't necessarily rule out other types of arthritis that are categorized as "inflammatory" and are autoimmune in nature. This means that the body attacks itself and the body reacts with inflammation. Common types of inflammatory arthritis include rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, ankylosing spondylitis, Reiter’s Syndrome, psoriatic arthritis, etc.

Some types of arthritis can cycle or "flare" where the associated pain and limitation to mobility are worse than at other times. Essentially you could feel fine some times and exhibit no real symptoms or at least managable pain levels but at other times you could be in a great deal of pain. They are not curable but many are managable with anti-inflammatory medications, physical therapy, etc.

Arthritis is also not an "old-person's" disease. Kids can be diagnosed with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis for instance. I was still in my 20's when I was diagnosed with a form of inflammatory arthritis. Yeah, I don't wear my high heels anymore either and Stevie is like 15 years older than I am now. Whatever she's comfortable wearing and is still on stage I'm good with even if I do think it's uglier than homemade sin.

I also have severe rheumatoid arthritis. I give myself shots every two weeks, and have undergone many physical therapy sessions. My specialists give me a grim outlook about my mobility in the future, but, I'm only 31 years old. Maybe if Stevie does have arthritis, it's just osteoarthritis from normal wear and tear to the joints.

It doesn't matter to me what she wears. I still love her, and I agree with those who said this thread makes them sad

My grandma has suffered with severe RA most of her life. She's now 76. She did well fighting back. She wasn't in a wheelchair full time until she was 71.

Let's not be sad. She's not crippled, she may be going through some physical struggles, but it is part of life. I think she's doing great - if she wasn't she wouldn't be able to tour. As you get older, the body just doesn't do what it used to do. I'm 39 and this year was the first year I went - "what the crap?!" - and I've had years of back pain. So, turn those frowns upside down and everytime you see her wearing those ugly shoes or arm braces - just know she's doing it cause she still wants to "Rock n Roll!" and that she still can!
