I know right! It isn't a FM song, isn't a Stevie Nicks song. With all her songs they picked this one? You just know that there were a lot of politics involved with the inclusion of this song.
Still it is catchy and I love the start of it, instead of Micks drums we get a cool sounding synth intro. Anyway Mystified needs to go soon. |

I love Mystified...
it's mysterious... it's written by both Buckingham and McVie it has takes with both on lead vocals... Christine was final vocal... it has an amazing atmospheric lead guitar at the end.... it leaves me with the feeling that I really liked side one.... and it leaves me ready for the intro to little lies....

True enough, but, Tony, don't you think that Fleetwood Mac takes complete ownership of it? To me, it's further indication that the band's ensemble style always co-opted the song's actual author.
That's why I have always found myself in basic antipathy with the advocates of Nicks-as-poet. No "poetry" she has ever written can stand up to the band's remarkable sonics. (At their best, of course ... not at their worst)

I do, too, & I feel it's absolutely essential to TANGO IN THE NIGHT because it carries through that five-tone theme we find throughout, which reminds us musical illiterates of Japan's shakuhachi, koto, or shamisen. I could no more think of TANGO without MYSTIFIED than I could RUMOURS without GOLD DUST WOMAN.
On the pentatonic subject, I always got a kick out of the way Rick Vito ended all performances of SEVEN WONDERS on the 1987 tour -- he codas a five-tone scale with suitably Oriental-sounding bends!

I do agree with you though that the sonics were remarkable. I also think that La Nicks' voice from Mirage back heavily influenced that sound. The chorus of Dreams is a good example, and she is not even singing lead on it ![]() |

If it's well done,, sometimes repetitive sounds are great. See ABBA's Winner takes it all. If you listen carefully the melody is very repetitous, very simple. Benny said in a documentary:
(the melody is) tarara.. tarari.. goes twice, and then goes dararara dararari twice, and that's it. There is nothing else there. I think we've achieved what I'm always aiming for, to try to keep things as simple as possible. I mean the inner thing in a song should be as simple as possible. Benny Anderson - 1999 And if master Benny said it so, it's true. no discussion!!! Well, not all simple things may turn into jewels, but some repetitous songs may be cool also.. so I like Mystified!!! ![]() |

Yes, as does You and I Part II AKA Eyes Wide Shut. I think I prefer Christine on the latter. He sings "Hoping tomorrow will never come for you, you, you, you, you, and I" but she sings "Hoping tomorrow will never come if you will love me today" It would have been nice if they both sang their different lines together. I think it would have meshed well.
