Didn't Christine say (or mean) that "Oh Daddy" was about Mick & Jenny, but not from Christine's perspective? So maybe the "I" of the beholder is Mick or Jenny -- or another mysterious observer.
(shivers)

It's kind of like the way that I think "Silver Girl" is about Sheryl Crow, but only by way of the nominal "I" of Sheryl's lover, who is himself being observed by his sister-in-law once-removed, via marriage (& abrupt divorce) to Aunt Tessy. Sheryl's cousin's best friend's Aunt Tessy, that is.

Yeah, maybe it's from the perspective of Mick's daughter talking to her dad. That's the ticket!

Ok and what's up with the use of both "you" and "he" in Thrown Down? It distressed Lindscrafter and, by extension, me (or she). Michele

Yes, that's the song. She specifically mentioned the lyrics, "He's a devil & and an angel" as being about Dennis.

Is this about Dennis too?

Well, I wouldn't really trust CAH or her book to be very accurate for information on anything. Although, there were a couple of very amusing anecdotes...

Songs that are obviously and completely about Stevie:

-You Make Lovin' Fun (It's all she wants to do!)

-Hold Me (Stick your hand inside of my glove obviously referencing lesbian foreplay.)

-Got a Hold On Me ("I've got a feelin' it'll work out right." Reference to Stevie's obsession with health and fitness.)

-Skies the Limit (Clearly an ode to Rhiannon, "and when the sky is starless.")

-Love In Store (Margi Kent's store that is, where their first "encounter" took place.)

-Only Over You ("People think I'm crazy, but they don't know [THAT I'M A LESBIAN.]")

-Wish You Were Here (Holds so much meaning to Christine regarding Stevie that she stole the intro to Silver Springs for it.)

-Songbird ("Singing like they know the score" obviously a reference to Stevie's orgasm noises, also said to sound like a white winged dove singing ooooo, baby, oooo, said oooo.)

-Oh Daddy (Christine's secret nickname for Stevie in the sack.)

-Everywhere (Self explanatory, Christine wants to be with Stevie everywhere, except for tours and in America.)

-Little Lies (Keeping your sexuality is kind of a big lie, but apparently Christine doesn't think so.)

-Say You Love Me (Rewritten because SCREAM MY NAME STEVIE wouldn't go over so well with commercial audiences.)

-Over My Head (Completely reference to where Stevie's ankle's go.)

I don't know, but remember that article that said the original title of the song was "Devil in White," if that offers any clues.

I doubt it. In an interview, she mentioned that "Behind The Mask" was about a guy who was a creep(her words), so I doubt it was about DW.

I actually notice that more from The Dance than the Rumours version.
serioulsy this has nothing to do with this thread, but I always thought I was the only one who noticed that.

No, no, you're reductio ad absurding it. I just mean that the subject of the song (whether it's 1st, 2nd or 3rd person) isn't necessarily the writer. Chris herself has said as much about her own songwriting. See her 1984 BAM article. See it now!!

Or maybe it's her 1984 Performing Songwriter interview ....

That's a given. Even with Stevie's writing, which is often discussed as if it's about her, I often think of the subject as a protagonist, a character, which may or may not be the songwriter.

Stevie once said she thought it was the same Sara in welcome to the room as in the other song and sometimes I think like that too. Today I was saying, that I believe the "how still my love" in EO17 is part of the same conversation as HSML, same woman haunting (or taunting) the same man's dreams. Whether that woman is actually Stevie or not is immaterial, because even if it is Stevie, you're getting different aspects or facets of her in different songs, different characters even if they have the same source and creator.

Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if some lines of Oh Daddy are about Chris's relationship with Mick as band leader and others could be about Mick and Jenny and others could be just telling the story of a difficult love relationship, as a life observation that's not specific to any one person.

Michele
