my friend was an intern with MS office last summer. she kept talking about how much more user-friendly it was, but the more i hear about it, the more that sounds like bs. i should slap her.

She's been brainwashed into believing the hype. It actually is more user-friendly but the learning curve is big. I mean, digging thru those menus to find more obscure commands was not all that intuitive. Now commands are organized on tabs and then grouped on a "ribbon" which is a big toolbar. But people will be angry at first. You can save files in the old version in the new software but of course people have to remember to do that.

it'll certainly be interesting to see what happens once it's officially released! when is that supposed to happen?

We just got the final version in the office for testing and such. But I can't seem to find a release date on MS's site. Amazon has a blurb about it being released in early '07. Given MS's history with releasing on time your guess is as good as mine.

Thanks for all the replies, everyone!
In frustration, I gave up and just ran a system restore to get my old version back. There just weren't enough pros in IE7 to outweigh the cons.

By the way, I avoid Microsoft Office altogether, and use OpenOffice. It's free, it's easy to use, and it's compatible with every document file-type I've run into.

The plus to this is now you use buttons for everything which are more user-friendly than menus, once you get the hang of the new UI.

I personally don't like IE7.

Oh yeah, and Windows Vista, the new OS, takes 8+ gig to install. Stupid Microsoft.
No menus? Suck it, Microsoft. I hate those Macromedia tabs. Blugh!

IE 7 is a pain in the ass -- I tried it out and hated it, then I spent around an hour trying to reinstall IE 6....! I would try Firefox but frankly I can't be bothered re-learning the system!

Office 2007 sounds like an absolute nightmare...!! It's not compatible with the old formats? For feck's sake, what good is that?!!?

Mercy me ...
