Actually the early Chrisitian church has a strong history in Africa, especially in Ethiopia where the whole Band Aid relief effort was focussed, so they were probably very aware of Christmas - which only goes to support your point about the sanctimonious tone of the song. (PS - not a Christian myself, by any means) My own favourite song of this type from this era is "Sun City".
