I just fukcing love Joni. Just love.
Sparks just turned me onto her and she is pretty fantastic. An absolutely stunning voice. I've only got her stuff from Night Ride Home and onward, though. All of which I pilfered from other people.

Do you think all rich people are bad? Or, can rich people be good?

Pffft. I take it you did not hear about Oprah's incident at Hermes.

Listen Ms. Mazeppa - you better go to Burlesque because you aint high enough for Vaudeville.

You can pull all the stops out
Till they call the cops out
Grind your behind till you're bend.
But you gotta get a gimmick
If you wanna get a hand.
You can sacrifice your sacharo
Working in the back row.
Bump in a dump till you're dead.
Kid you gotta have a gimmick
If you wanna get ahead.
You can uh...You can uh...
You can uh...uh...uh...
That's how Burlesque was born.
So I uh...and I uh...
And I uh...uh...uh...
But I do it with a horn...
Once I was a Schleppa,
Now I'm Miss Mazzeppa,
With my revolution in dance.
You gotta have a gimmick
If you wanna have a chance!

He's one of my faves too. I can't help but think, though, that he's donating his proceeds to charity or something. But who knows? Also, does anyone else find it a bit odd that Stevie Nicks, Tom Petty, and Don Henley (was Joe Walsh there too? I don't remember, this thread has gotten so long) were all invited? They are all linked to one another musically, personally, etc...makes me wonder if this guy, while he may not be a direct friend of theirs, has some sort of connection to someone who IS a friend of theirs. Because really, who out of the blue invites those particular musicians for his 13 year old daughter? Makes me think that this "little soiree" was really for the dad not the daughter.

I think you are mixing apples and oranges, Jason.

I don't think anyone is saying "rich people are bad". The whole point of this tirade is that dude is tacky and gross. You said to me earlier, "I would never throw this kind of party". So, I know that you know the score. I don't see why you cannot just admit that this guy was way over the top and just leave it at that instead of trying to twist people's disgust into some kind of class warfare.

I think mostly all of the artists who played this gig are signed with Howard Kauffman. I saw some photos of the party...but none of Tom Petty. Has it been confirmed that he actually played? They showed Aerosmith, 50 Cent, Ciara, Stevie and Don, Kenny G...hmm, maybe some others but I didnt see Petty. I bet big, bad Howard put together this deal with Brooks.

More Joni, although the "velvet curtain calls" she was talking about were not children's parties:

I slept last night in a good hotel
I went shopping today for jewels
The wind rushed around in the dirty town
And the children let out from the schools
I was standing on a noisy corner
Waiting for the walking green
Across the street he stood
And he played real good
On his clarinet, for free.

Now me I play for fortune
And those velvet curtain calls
I've got a black limousine
And two gentlemen
Escorting me to the halls
And I play if you have the money
Or if you're a friend to me
But the one man band
By the quick lunch stand
He was playing real good, for free.

Nobody stopped to hear him
Though he played so sweet and high
They knew he had never
Been on their T.V.
So they passed his music by
I meant to go over and ask for a song
Maybe put on a harmony...
I heard his refrain
As the signal changed
He was playing real good, for free.

REAL GOOD FOR FREE
Joni Mitchell

I want to see video of those 13-year-old brats with rings in their genitalia actually trying to dance to "Hotel California."

Well, I think there is the whole vibe against the rich as a whole going on here, even if it is slight. But, that is just how I see it.

In the end, I get all wired when people start bitching about how other people spend their money.

No. There is no vibe against rich people. There is a vibe against rich people who engage in ridiculously over-the-top, extragant, conspicuous consumption. I know that this whole subgroup-within-a-group thing is somehow an incredibly difficult topic for you to wrap your mind around, but you've got to try and work with us here.
