Devils & Dust and The Rising - Bruce Springsteen

either/or - Elliott Smith
I love the Springsteen and Elliott albums, so I'll have to check out the others!

Really? I love Springsteen the best when he's doing his acoustic thang although Devils And Dust is more rock than Tom Joad I must say.

I don't have the Juliette And The Licks album but the video for You're Speaking My Language is fantastic!

Oh, Sharon. Ohhhh Sharon. OH Sharon. Get Sam Phillips' A Boot and a Shoe. STAT. And then, if you like that? Fan Dance. Then, if you like that? Martinis & Bikinis and Omnipop. I'm giving you the name of all four of those because you WILL love A Boot and A Shoe.

Let's see. Others... hmm. Got the new White Stripes today and I HATE it, so that doesn't go on the list. Have you heard the Feist album, Let it Die? I like it a lot. Also like the Dead 60s album a lot.

Have you ever listened to anything of Stephin Merritt's or the Magnetic Fields?
Right, A Boot And A Shoe. It's now on my list.

Hayley, I'm ashamed to say I don't know who Feist are! What kind of music do they play?

Also, what would you recommend from Stephin Merritt/the Magnetic Fields?

Sad to hear the new White Stripes album isn't any good. I must admit the new single didn't impress me much.

Badly Drawn Boy - One Plus One Is One (or Bewilderbeast)
Ben Harper - Welcome To The Cruel World
Santa Esmerelda - The Greatest Hits
Devandra Banhart - Nino Rojo
Tracy Chapman - New Beginning
Redemption's Son - Joseph Arthur
Shawn Colvin - A Whole New You
Snow Patrol - The Final Straw
Vienna Teng - Warm Strangers, but get 'The Tower' from Waking Hour on iTunes or something and add it to this album.
I have a few of these (LOVE Devendra Banhart!) so I shall definitely check out the rest!
thanks!

Thanks for the recommendations! Love Oar in particular.

I think the lyrics on Devils and Dust are spectacular, it's just that the final product didn't move me very much. A lot of people love it, though, and I think he's still fabulous.

Damn, it's such a fun album. The songs have such great hooks, they're so catchy, and I'm really impressed with the fact that she produced it herself, wrote all the songs, etc. Haven't seen the video yet, but I did see them on Leno last week doing You're Speaking My Language. I hope it works out because she's incredibly talented and not an actor-turned-singer pop tart like Minnie Driver or Robert Downey Jr. It's worth owning for her impression of Bush on American Boy Vol. 2 alone.

Let me know what you think of A Boot and A Shoe- you might have to live with it awhile. But I hope you love it. It's in my Top 5 now.

Feist is a Canadian singer... the album is great. Pop songs with a dash of torch and trip-hop. She has a great voice. You can listen to clips here:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...music&n=507846

The Magnetic Fields are one of my favorite bands of all time- Stephin's masterpiece is the band's 69 Love Songs, which is a 3 disc set, and is fantastic. It's fantastic, but could probably be a bit much, though. Also good is the most recent album "I."

I can't love the White Stripes no matter how hard I try- I've always liked the singles but the albums have left me cold, and this one just seems aimless, and I miss the inclusion of a really good rock song. It just kinda meanders.

Well, I think they aren't from the same geographical location, so it would be kind of a longshot.

Although, JJ's actual first name IS "John".

I can't recommend an album to you because I have no idea what sort of stuff you listen to or even like.

Aren't we both on a Fleetwood Mac board, David?
There's a big, big clue for you.

Anyway, I'm always interested in what other people like. Sometimes it results in me discovering something new, that I never would have thought I'd like in a million years.

The video must be online somewhere, it's fantastic! You'll love it. They kept playing it on VH1 UK for a while.
I'll definitely check the album out

Joni Mitchelle: her first album (in has neat cover artwork.
EL&P: mostly instrumental, but I love "Lucky Man"
