[QUOTE=dissention]He's much like Demille in that he couldn't direct an actor if his life depended on it . . . . QUOTE]

IMO - he did MUCH better in the silents than in talkies - but he did pretty well in the non epic talkies

I've seen it on Apple site some days ago, and I have to say that Brad Pitt with a short haircut looks even more beautiful , but as an actor unfortunately no improvements. The story doesn't seem that original (there's written True Lies all over it), but it looks funny, the tango scene was great and they're a stunning couple. Besides I've seen 3-Iron (one of my 2004 favourites) has been finally released there, did anyone see it?

Well... he did well in Sunset Boulevard. Maybe he just needed someone directing him directing.

One of my fav. movies EVER - Swanson was a case study in understated overstatement. She deserved to win the Oscar, but it went to Judy Holiday for "Born Yesterday," which she was great in, but come on Swanson was up for SB and Bette Davis for her brilliant performace and reciting of that brilliant, brilliant script in "All About Eve"

One of my favourites too, it's one of those movies you're never tired of. I loved Swanson in it, but honestly for the Oscar I would have chosen Bette Davis. And Von Stroheim shuld have won too.

BD was magnificent in AAE, but Swanson should have won it for her career, she had been nominated twice before - Sadie Thompson (first AA ever) and The Tresspaser (her first talkie which was a huge hit) - so, though BD was good, Swanson was on par and I think the career should have closed the deal for her. I think JH won because of the voting split BD and GS caused.

I agree Swanson was totally on par with Davis, and strangely they were nominated for roles with a strong autobiographical component. It's just that emotionally Davis involved me more, her performance is just larger than life.

Most assuredly, Bette Davis played Margo Channing in a superb way. I think that year, it was just too hard a choice as they both deserved it. I also think had they both not been so generally disliked by their peers because they were considered tyrants, one would have won the statute.

Bette deserved the Oscar for All About Eve, IMO. Celeste Holm also gave a great, understated performance in that flick. I need to get out that DVD and watch it again.

I know - I love it and both of their performaces. I also LOVED Marilyn Monroe's performance (she ALMOST upstages BD in the party scene ) and the guy who played Addison Dewitt was FAB., though he always played that kind of role.

As for the Oscar, I think Swanson deserved it more because Norma Desmond was a more complicated role that required more nuance to play than the power house all of time bravada of Margot Channing - and Swanson did it in spades - watch her hands in the scene where she is talking to a sleeping Joe Gillis about where he has been that night and how she needs him - no actual dialogue is required as the pleading with a sense of desparation and twisted psychosis is told via the hands. But, to be sure, both were undoubtably perfection - that is why I think the Academy Awards are a little silly sometimes.

MM did a nice job.....you could already see the charisma she brougt to the screen.

Swanson was great, no doubt. I still would go with Bette, though. But that's probably because I love Bette more.

The Oscars are silly. Their inability to honor a comedy drives me insane.

ITA - I think the "serious" actors slight comedy because they know they cannot -- or at least few can - why you ask - well because comedy requires timining and nuance which are talents IMO beyond drama - which is also difficult.
