Thumbs up As I stated before...

and I will clarify again I dont think anyone is a nerd for liking either Star Wars or LOTR (I was once a Star Wars fan...I still prefer the original 3 movies over the prequels).

'Star Wars' Breaks Single-Day Sales Mark

LOS ANGELES - The last of the "Star Wars" movies has done what no movie in history has ever accomplished — sold $50 million worth of tickets in a single day.

"Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith" grossed $50,013,859 from showings at 3,661 theaters and more than 9,000 screens around the country on Thursday, including special midnight shows, according to box-office tracker Exhibitor Relations. That beat the one-day record set in May 2004 by "Shrek 2," which sold $44.8 million on a single Saturday — its fourth day in theaters.

"It's staggering," said Bruce Snyder, president of domestic distribution at Twentieth Century Fox. "It's probably 20 percent more than I thought we could do."

The George Lucas film, which features the transformation of Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker into the evil Darth Vader, also beat the opening day record held by "Spider-Man 2," which grossed $40.4 million when it opened on a Wednesday last June.

"Fifty million is a good opening weekend, let alone a single day," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of Exhibitor Relations. "This is the box office equivalent of a 100-year flood."

The news comes as a relief to Hollywood, which has seen a box office slump for 12 straight weeks.

Theater owners, studios and marketing partners had their hopes pinned on "Star Wars," to kick-start the summer movie season and they weren't disappointed.

The film debuted on 2,900 screens at midnight Thursday. The take from that one showing alone was $16.5 million, which beat the previous record of $8 million set by "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" in 2003.

Thursday's take dwarfed the next highest film, and last week's box office champ, "Monster-in-Law," starring Jane Fonda and Jennifer Lopez. That film grossed $1.5 million on Thursday, according to BoxOfficeMojo.com.

It is almost assured "Star Wars" will push past the $100 million mark for its opening weekend. The record for a three-day weekend is held by the first "Spider-Man," which grossed $114.8 million in May 2002.

Agreed.

I admit my love for LOTR is very geeky. So, no worries, Brian.

Gah, how depressing. o_O Utterly fabulous movie, but I cry at everything these days it seems and this was no exception. It was just so so so sad, I couldn't help it.

Definitely the best of the prequels and close to my favorite one. Natalie Portman looked so beautiful with that long curly hair and for once I loved Ewan McGregor. Hayden looked the hottest I've ever seen him, too, and there was actually some good acting in a Star Wars movie. Go figure. Lucas certainly saved the best prequel for last, it blew away the other two.

OMG - same here - I totally cried

It was the best prequel by far - I think I'll just sort of disregard the other two

Glad you enjoyed it - I had a nerd "breakdown of how this movie fits w/ eps 4-6" talk with the friend I went with last night...

I was a pretty big Star Wars geek in high school - it still comes out once in a while

*SPOILERS*

I wept like a baby when Anakin was burning alive and Obi Wan said "You were like a brother, I loved you," and then Anakin cried and screamed "I hate you!"

Gah, I'm such a dork.

SPOILER!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The acting was HORRID and that, for want of a better term, "dialogue" OY - but I liked the movie and thought it was cool.

BTW - does anyone remember if Chewy ever referenced knowing Yoda or vice vera in the first three edisodes?

Apparently there are still 20 years that need to be covered. According to the producer Rick McCallum, they're probably going to do it an a TV series of something like 100 episodes. Lucas would decide in 3-4 months if the project would start.

Like c3p0 and Vader, Chewy and Yoda never have a scene together.

I saw the movie yesterday and here are my thoughts:

The most important part: I enjoyed Sith, it was entertaining. It works nicely just as a transition piece. Everything that had to happen in this installment, did.

It was not, however, a good film. There were no characters except for Anakin and Obi-wan. Everyone else relied on viewers to provide characterization from previous films which is all right sometimes, but in this case lines were essentially interchangeable between all characters that weren't anakin and obi-wan as long as the switching took place on the same sides (good or evil)

This "movie" was not really a movie but rather a collection of scenes that seemed to rattle off as George Lucas went through the list of things he had to resolve to tie the films (and cartoon) together:

1. Gotta resolve dooko (check)
2. Gotta resolve revelation of palpatine (check)
3. Anakin has to turn completely to dark side (check)...

There was no consistency. He moved from one item on the check list to the next without really working to tie it together. By doing so he did create an entertaining collection but not a film.

Again, compared to the previous two prequels, the acting was outstanding in this one, imo. I've yet to see a Star Wars movie with truly good acting, even the old ones. I mean, Mark Hamill in Return of the Jedi is painful and everyone comes off as amateurs because Lucas is such a bad director. Samuel L. Jackson was still horrific, though. Unwatchable. It's all due to Lucas because these are all talented and capable actors.

Did anyone see the trailer for Mr. and Mrs. Smith before Star Wars? I loathe to admit it, but it looks good. Angelina Jolie looks absolutely jawdropping in it.

I also cried when Padme started sobbing after the Jedi massacre.
