I'm agnostic, but as every Italian I've grown in a society with strong catholic roots. This Pope comes from one of the most stiff and intolerant catholic communities in Europe (history is there to prove it). He would never say anything in favour of homosexuality, abortion, artificial procreation or the use of anti-conceptionals , not even in Africa. He is very respected, and has around him a very conservative entourage, but in the Catholic world right now there are also a lot of influential voices that ask for a deep change with the next Pontiff. I can only hope it will happen.

Ha. You'd think molesting young kids would be on that list of things he's not in favor of, but strangely, no...

*shrug*

He issues a statement like this about every other week, doesn't he? Honestly, I don't take the Cathlolic church seriously. They have no moral authority.

And?

I condemn the Pope and his religion as an attack on society. No one gives a **** what I think, I don't give a **** what he thinks.

Knowing the history of the Catholic Church, what else would you expect? Remember these are the people that brought Galileo before the Inquisition for saying the earth moves...

Question Why is it...

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope John Paul on Saturday condemned same sex marriage as an attack on the fabric of society and called on Catholics to combat what he said was aggressive attempt to legally undermine the family.

"Attacks on marriage and the family, from an ideological and legal aspect, are becoming stronger and more radical every day," the 84-year old pontiff said in the unusually strong statement.

"Who destroys this fundamental fabric causes a profound injury to society and provokes often irreparable damage."

The Catholic Church teaches that marriage between a man and a women is sacred and that homosexuality is a sin.

That stance has been under pressure in some of its core constituencies, including the United States and Catholic Spain where the socialist government in October approved a controversial draft law to legalize gay unions.

But a counterattack has begun. In the United States, President Bush was swept back to power in the November elections with help from U.S. evangelicals and Catholics who agree with the Pope.

Votes for Bush included solid support from the religious right and his win was interpreted by some as a victory for conservative Christians on issues like gay rights and abortion.

The Polish Pope on Saturday also condemned abortion, artificial procreation and equal status for cohabiting couples as undermining the marital state.

"These things that are presented as civilized progress or scientific conquests, in many cases are in fact a defeat for the dignity of human life and for society," his statement read.

that everytime I think of the Poop, I mean the Pope, I get the image of him being like the Pope on "South Park" who puts his finger to his lips and flips 'em up & down Bebebebebebebebebebebebe????

Man he is a now certifiable F tard...Way to go Poop!!!! Yer my new of the month!!!! Congrats...

What makes me laugh is the fact that the catholic church think we give a shiiit what they have to say.

I went to catholic schools for 10 years lol. Finally after my freshman year I said fuc% this shiit and went to my local public school. I never believed in half of their crap at any early age bc they are so hypocritical. One thing that I always loved is that they say only saints go to heaven, all other people go to hell. The only people that get canonized as saints are like high profile public people. But the second anyone dies they go "oh there in heaven with God".

Im more concerned about the temperature in China right now than what some damn church thinks of me. Starting in the 8th grade me and my guy best friend starting having oral sex with each other in the boys locker room LOL. Meanwhile twenty feet away Sister Mary Christmas would be telling everyone that masturbation was a sin lol.

Blow me!

Well - actually I'm of the belief that the Pope actually died years ago and is simply being propped up by a series of cables and sticks....ever see WEekend At Bernies huh? huh?

Seriously - he's not even lucid anymore and I've never been one to agree with or even like the Pope/Vatican so I pretty much just do my own thing...

But seriosly..this on top of my ignorant stupid "Christian" unlce - I'm absolutely sickened by so-called Christians who seem to have missed the point alltogether....

At this point I've been plotting pro-gay things to say at Christmas dinner for some time - just to see if I can get my uncle's goat...if he tries anything I'm coming back at him with an attack on his straight son (also Christian) who knocked up a girl, said it was his first time and that she 'tricked' him into it, ignored her through the whole pregnancy - but now they're acknowledging the kid....sickening...and I do believe the Bible also condemns sex outside of marraige....it could be a fun Crhistmas afterall

Anyway - I'm rambling as usual - but bottom line is there really ARE nice, open-minded, smart religious people out there - it just seems to be the wackos who are the most vocal - but the whole thing is really starting to make me sick. Just sick.

I've gotten into the gay marriage argument with my Dad. It's so frustrating but it is important to me to support things I believe in even if it will cause discord.

IMO God loves gay people and doesn't judge them nor does He (She) judge people that co-habitate. The judgement is done by the church. It is scary how the hypocrisy can trickle down, at least in my family. My father's aunts are always fighting with each other and pointing fingers, it's awful. His uncle is a deacon whose oldest child is clearly a lesbian but will not come out as such because of all of this. The family is just so Catholic, but I have never been able to identify with that religion. So when asked what religion I am I say "none" and it feels very liberating.

F the Pope!

is as coherent now as the infamous Great Cornholio (Of "Beavis & Butthead" fame):

"I'm the great Pope-holio, I'm a Catholic...My bung hole goes BlablablablaBlablablablaBlablablablaBlablablabla"

Brian "Pontiff on this beyotch" j.

I totally agree. Though crimes, cover-ups, hypocrisy, and scandals keep being a part of the Catholic world (I can only speak about it, as I said, it'a living organ in my society, where anyway the separation between State and Church is very solid) there are also many positive examples. For instance one of the most respected and influential priests in Italy is Don Luigi Ciotti, the creator of Gruppo Abele (the page is in English):
http://www.gruppoabele.org/Index.aspx?idmenu=789

I'm just saying it because the portrait of Catholicism that was coming from this thread didn't seem very balanced to me.
