I hug everyone. Seriously. I probably freak my friends out with how much I hug them.

I'm quite reserved so I usually don't hug or kiss people I don't know well. Even if in Italy both hugs and kisses are very very common, our greetings can be very physical.

I live in the South too. I think you may be right. Everyone I know, friends and family, hug each other hello and goodbye. We don't hug people we barely know, but friends and family definitely hug. It may be a southern hospitality thing.

I am a huggy person. Never use to be as a child or teenager but when I started my own family, I wanted to make sure my kids knew they were loved so I would give them a daily hug and my husband is a huggy person too. My grown kids tease me about the hugging but I think they secretly love it. haha

As for pictures being taken. I enjoy taking family pictures but hate being in them. If I lost 20 lbs they can take a picture of me. haha One day my grandson did mention that grandma needs her picture taken sometimes so he can remember me when I am gone so even though I hate getting my picture taken, I do it for my grandson and my kids even though I am still shy about it.

I am very affectionate, but only with people close to me. I don't hug casual friends, etc.

Same here! I swear it is a Southern thing, though I know there are exceptions. I'm really loath to hug people I don't know; I usually have to know someone pretty well and for decent amount of time before I do it, but after that I am very huggy. Some people are more affectionate than I am around here. I remember one time I met a girl on the first day of a class we had together and we talked about what other classes we were taking for about three minutes, and then she hugged me. I was pretty shocked about that, since I had known her for three minutes!

I liked the cartoon you posted, Amber. I wish the U.S. was much more open about being affectionate. I have a professor who's from Congo, and she said she used to hold hands with her friends all the time when they were walking down the street together, and when she came to the U.S. and did that with her female friends, she was very surprised when people started saying she was a lesbian!

Anyway, I really enjoy reading all of y'all's responses to this.

I think it's, to a degree anyway, a socialogical thing. The French seem to hug and kiss each other all the time, yet us "Brits" are very reserved.. Sure if I know somebody well, at least a female I'll give a little hug maybe, if it's a guy a handshake will be enough for me.

Anybody I don't know well gets a smile and the regulation hello, maybe a handshake if I'm feeling generous

The states seems to have different reactions all over, The good old New York greeting of "what do you want?" springs to mind..

That huggy girl is like my friend.
I guess i wish the us was more open, but then i'd have to hug and kiss everyone... but i guess that would seem normal to me, if everyone always did it.
by the way, that book is one of the top 5 funniest books i've ever read. ever. If anyone wants it, it's called "Dogberts Clues for the Clueless" it is ostensibly all about manners, but is fricking hilarious.

The people that disturb me are not the ones that hug you indiscriminately on your first meeting but the ones that invade your personal "bubble" when you speak to them for the first time. They come too close, you move back and they follow you.... You move back again and they come too close again, it's like some odd game where they follow you about as you walk backwards..

And is it me or are they always the ones with bad breath that do this?

Yeah...

And there's no item on the market to deal with it....

Now there's a product just waiting to be invented, a bad breath detector. Kinda like a smoke alarm. It should vibrate or something to warn of incoming attacks...

Then again if just one of us was honest enough to just tell them about it, there wouldn't be bad breath zones...

Arrow Mfm...

Seteca (and you) will appreciate this...

Close talker.

Yeah, I used to work with a lady from India, and when she'd talk to you, she'd be RIGHTHERE. LOL I agree, it's a socialogical thing.

Southerners are usually laid back and friendly, hence, the affection...I guess.
