The film didn't scare me, but the book....OMG. I read it when I was in my teens, not too far from the same age as Regan. I slept with the light on for a month. Then one night I had a dream that *I* was possessed, but my furniture was in a different arrangement than what I really had. I didn't think anything about it at the time, but the next day I rearranged my furniture (not remembering the dream). Well, yep...I arranged the furniture just like in the dream and I never realized it until I went to bed that night. I laid there until about 3 in the morning, scared stiff and wide awake. I finally got up and moved the furniture back to its original arrangement. To this day, that is the scariest book I've ever read.

I agree completely. The book scared the hell out of me. I read it when I was probably 11. I was WAY into Stephen King. Slept with the light on - the whole nine yards. 'Salem's Lot was almost as frightening. I liked certain parts of the movie, but I don't think it holds a candle to the book. It freaked me out a bit, but not the way the book did. There was just no way they could do the hedge animals, which are what really got me in the book.

I saw it when I was twelve and just remember being positively shocked at hearing the C-word.

I liked the book, but it didn't have a big effect on me because I had already seen the movie. I got Hannibal the day it came out and read it in three days, though. I was so disappointed witht hat piece of **** that I can't even describe it. It was AWFUL. Have you read it? It's quite different from the movie, which I liked.

Of course you liked it, Anthony Hopkins is the best living actor Okay I'm not very objective, but still... he's the best

Scariest movies for me: Magic (with Tony again), Ringu (The Ring was its remake), Marathon Man, Duel

The Shining - book scared me more than the movie - I read the last third of it or so in one night. I knew I couldn't sleep until I finished reading it...."They call it....the shinin'..."

Exorcist-movie scared me more than the book, but now the movie just makes me laugh...you should hear my demon voice impression..."It's a lovely day for an exorcism...."

Silence of My Yams - I've read the trilogy out of sequence...I still have about 200 or so pages left of Red Dragon. I don't wanna finish it 'cause then I'll be done w/ the series.

"LOVE your suit!"

I love The Shining - both the book and the movie, despite the differences. I thought Stanley Kubrick did a good job with the creepy tone & slowly-building-then-exploding pace of the movie. The tone and pace of the book always seemed a little inconsistent to me, but the detail and ultimate payoff were better... My favorite Stephen King book is still Carrie -- it is structured like a nonfiction research paper, and I constantly had to remind myself that I was reading a FICTION book.

The only movie that has ever really scared me to the core is The Amityville Horror, and to this day I have never watched it all the way through in one sitting. I always get to the "GEEEEEETTTTTTTTTT OUTTTTTTTTT" part and have to stop. Just knowing that it's based on a true story (and I know this is disuputed), and seeing those 3rd floor "eye" windows, I even get goosebumps when I see the cover of the video or DVD in the store.

P.S. - I saw a documentary about the house and story on TV, and the new owners have remodeled the house, replacing the "eye" windows for small square ones. They said their problems with ghost hunters and movie fanatics stopped almost immediately after the change -- it made such a difference that most people don't even recognize the house.

Heart The Shining...

My 15 min. of fame....

I met Stephen King back "in the day"... it was at an English conference about creative writing and he was the guest speaker---anyway we shared a few michelob's and marlboro's after the conference...Really incredible guy, I was so interested in what he had to say-
(This was during the filming of the Shining- and he wasn't exactly thrilled with the direction that Kubrick was taking, although in hindsight----all of his movies are so low budget on screen, this one was the BEST) I loved everything about this movie ---the symentry that Kubrick created-the twins- the "All work and no play makes Jack...." Scary, scary ...great flick

As the years have gone by I have found that his books (unfortunately) are already written as a screenplay, too much description, too much blood-he used to write leaving so much about the charater to your own imagination ( as far as looks and style) Now- too descriptive for me, I like to think for myself..so I miss that part of his writing style and don't read as much as I used to. I agree Carrie is his best effort...Nice man though...
Anyway spooky movies for me?
How about the very first Nightmare on Elm Street-Halloween-Jaws-Rebecca-Jennifer 8- The Ring - Glass House-to name a few -PERSONALLY I like movies that keep me on the edge of my seat-not gore....

What IS that part??!!! I suppose it's there solely to make you say, "What the hell?" and to perhaps make you feel like you're losing your mind too?

Don't even get me started...this is perhaps my favorite movie of all-time.

I don't like his books, but that's a cool story....
