Default The Shining

Just watched this last night because I hadn't seen it in AGES and, my word, what a puzzling and scary flick. Can anyone really make any sense of the whole thing? There were so many different little things that just didn't add, yet fit perfectly into it.

The scene that scares the bejesus out of me every time is the one where Shelley Duvall is running up the stairs with the butcher knife and stops to look down the hall, then sees two men in a compromising position ( ), only one of them is dressed as a bear. Scares me EVERY time.

I read this book at a very swanky hotel (actually more than one) in Paris and the Waldorf Astoria in NYC both of which to me had that ghostly feel to it. Talk about scare the Shhheeeiittteeeee out of me LOL

But, yes, that seen is terrifying!!!!!!!!!!! as is the one where the blood comes gushing out of the elevators. AND - that creepy 20's music at the end!!!!!!!!

YIPES!!!

I haven't seen the movie in a very long time, but I do remember the book scared me a LOT more than the movie and the movie was pretty creepy.

Did you see that remake for TV? Bad...

Talking Greatness!

It's one of the scariest, if not, THE scariest movie! It's not blood (elevator notwithstanding LOL) and guts everywhere, it's not a chainsaw ripping through flesh or eyeballs hanging out, it's psychologically scary, for the most part. I can't imagine anything scarier than being stuck in a very claustrophic place with a frickin' psycho, who you know and love. LOL

I didn't care for the book very much and I hated the ending. But it was still very scary!!!

That whole soundtrack for the movie was spooky. The heartbeats drove me mad.

Bad isn't the word. Cheesy is the word.

Berlioz is a MASTER composer. That particular movement is from "Symphonie Fantastique" and is called "Songe d'une nuit du Sabbat" (translation "Dream of a Witches' Sabbath) - Here is an excerpt from an inperpreation from my CD:

5th Movement / Dream of a Witches' Sabbath

He dreams that he is present at a witches' dance, surrounded by horrible spirits, amidst sorcerers and monsters in many fearful forms, who have come to assist at his funeral. Strange sounds, groans, shrill laughter, distant yells, which other cries seem to answer. The beloved melody is heard again but it has lost its noble and shy character; it has become a vulgar, trivial and grotesque dance-tune. She it is, who comes to attend the witches' meeting. Howls of joy greet her arrival . . . . She joins the infernal orgy . . . . Bells toll for the dead, a burlesque parody of the Dies Irae. The witches' round dance. The dance and the Dies Irae are heard together.

That's freaky. Sounds like something out of Macbeth!

I've tried to get my hands on the soundtrack for the movie for YEARS, but it's so hard to find and expensive that I stopped looking.

The whole thing allegedly is about some girl (a famous actress of the time named Henrietta Smithson) who he could not have, dumped him, etc. Ah - Its only love

If I was dating someone that freaky, I'd dump them, too.

Cute.

Yeah, those twin girls and the lady in the bathtub freaked me out the most. Stephen King said somewhere (the intro maybe?) that he knew he was going to write about the lady in the bathtub and he would count down the days until it came time to write it in. The idea scared him that much that he dreaded writing it!

When I was younger I used to watch every scary film going and none of them bothered me. When I was 15 I was babysitting one night and thought I would watch The Shining. I can honestly say it scared the **** out of me!

This movie scared the sh*t out of me also. Not as much as the Exorcist though!

The twins really creeped me out, they were so freaky looking. In HS I remember me and some of my study hall friends memorized parts from The Shining. We used to crack each other up w/ our renditions of, "When I am IN here, that means that I am WORKING. THAT means, DON'T come in!" or "You're DISTRACTING me! It will then take me TIME to get BACK to WHERE I WAS!"

You know.. the Exorcist didn't scare me at all. Yes it was gruesome at times but I didn't find it at all scary. Films that scare me the most now are more the supernatural, ghosty type films.

It scared me silly - I would not and could not sleep for like a month after seeing it!!!!!!

AND - I must say that I RAN (and mind you I am 6'4") to my car in the parking lot after seeing Silence of the Lambs
