Bootleg question

Does anyone have the means to improve the sound quality of a bootleg recording? I have 2 rare shows from 1972 & 1974. Unfortunately, the sound quality is very poor, probably D quality. Is it possible to somehow re-master a recording or at the very least, increase the volume level to at least make it listenable?

You can't do much, but you can convert the show into WAV & then use a sound-editing tool (like CoolEdit or Creative WAV Studio) to beef up the volume, normalize, pan, phase-shift, echo, etc.

When the source is bad, however, nothing can make significant improvements, especially not a typical home workstation type of program (many of which are free or inexpensive).
