Oops!!!!

Here is the part of the interview from 1998

Interview Magazine
July 1998
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"A Storm Called Stevie"

. . .

RR: Did you know that you are sort of a drag icon?

Stevie: Well, I've heard that. Is it true?

RR: Definitely.

Stevie: It cracks me up-I love it. I saw a six-foot-five guy dressed like me in the front row at one of the recent Fleetwood Mac shows. He had a veil thing on, and a full-on dress. I could hardly get through the song-it just made me die laughing. I wanted to jump offstage and run down and look at him. [laughs] I've heard about the Night of A Thousand Stevies in New York, which of course I'm going to go to, as soon as I can manage to be on that side of the country when it happens."

Kudos to the Nicksfix (www.nicksfix.com) for the posting of the article.

she'll never make it..."as soon as i manage to be on that side of the country when it happens"...that's just an excuse...she's been to "that" side of the country several times cause they usually hold that around Mother's Day right? Maybe not exactly to the day but....they'll have to reschedule the "Night et al" this year for when we know FM will be in NY...

Also, with her money, she could fly herself out to NY anytime and shock the **** out of people by just showing up.

You're right, she would NEVER attend. I do think she's sincere when she says she gets a kick out of it, though.

To paraphrase her on the VH-1 fan thing - "If you want to use me as an excuse to have a party - that's GREAT!!!!"

The first time I was ever aware of Stevie having a large gay following, was around the time I was 21.
A female friend of mine was friends with a few gay guys she met in college, and she'd often go to gay clubs with them. She said it was the best place for a woman to go if she just wanted to dance and have fun without being hit on.

This was long before I came out, and she told me, "oh, you'd love it there... they play every track off of 'Timespace' every time I'm there," and then she went on about how much all the gay guys at the club love Stevie.

Before that, I never made any kind of Stevie/gay following connection.

I do think Stevie has more straight male fans than, say, Madonna or Liza Minnelli, but she definitely has a large gay following.
And I think Stevie is well aware of, and proud of, that gay following. She even did an interview with HX magazine when 'Trouble In Shangri-La' was released... and HX isn't exactly a "G" rated mag. So I doubt she would have denied the use of her music to 'Gypsy 83' based solely on the film's "gay themes."

As has been suggested, she probably never even knew about the request.

I'd really like to have it on dvd.

If you're judging the movie based on characters who like to dress like Stevie, why would you like Stevie? Back in the day, she *was* a tad goth. She wore a black wedding dress, for cripes sake. When you start adding platform boots, black lace, shawls, and black bustiers to your wardrobe, you run the risk of being called that.
Don't forget the crosses. If crosses aren't Gothic, I don't know what is.

What is HX?

And I still say that 99% of people who a guy tells they like Fleetwood Mac to, would not even think they are gay just because of FM/Stevie. I still have not heard of this connection, other then on the internet. And just because some of Stevie's songs are played in gay clubs that doesn't mean anything because music is music and doesn't have anything to do with a person's sexuality. Straight people, gay people, bi people all have the same ears and can enjoy the same music, right?

Met a woman in college wearing the all black thing and someone asked her what was up with that. She replied, "I'm in mourning for the world." To me, that's goth.
I saw Morrissey about a year ago and he was wearing a suit! I've never met any Goths who didn't love the Earth as much as any Hippie I've ever met.

HX is magazine geared towards gay men, and therefore is filled with articles and photo layouts with "gay themes." There is also semi-nudity (but nothing hardcore).
Given the nature of the mag, and Stevie's decision to do an interview with them, I highly doubt the gay themes in 'Gypsy 83' would have scared her away.

You're right, I doubt anyone thinks, "oh, that guy's a Fleetwood Mac fan, so he must be gay." But gay Mac & Nicks fans are definitely not limited to the internet community.

And no, it doesn't inherently mean an artist has a "huge gay fanbase" simply because their music is played in gay clubs, but there are certain artists, and Stevie is among them, who are considered popular gay icons, and whose music often gets played in gay clubs for that reason.

By the way, that's not a bad thing. If an artist has the blessing of the gay community, they're pretty much assured of always having an audience no matter how cool or uncool the rest of the music buying public thinks they are.

Yes I have, two years ago and it was a blast! It was so much fun to dance to nothing but Stevie songs all night and to be in a crowded room with people that knew ALL the words just like me ! And I was banging my ribboned tambourine like crazy all night!

The performances were fun too, some were tongue in cheeek, others more serious. The best part of course was the Battle in the end, where all the performers get on stage for Edge Of Seventeen.

It was definitely worth flying to the US for- and if FM hadn't toured last year I would have gone again. Instead I went for the "real thing"

Of course. Alas, only one, in LA during the Enchanted tour. I have a great video of it. She was rumoured to be coming, but then that whole "stalker" thing happened. I am certain she was freaked out and her people wouldn't let her go. Why would she, after having to get a restraining order ? It would have been a great venue for her to go to, as the Viper Room has a sweet little VIP room where celebrities can hide. But, I don't blame her. If she did go, I bet she wouldn't mingle. The poor woman would be eaten alive. I could barely walk in there, let alone get a drink when I wanted one. She would be friggin MOBBED.

That being said, it is a dream event for any Stevie fan. If I had the time, I would go to NY every year for it. Just never has worked into my schedule.

God NO. You don't have to dress up.

Dude, I am a lot of things, but a drag queen ain't one of them.
That would be a deal breaker. Only about half the people were in full on Stevie drag. The rest had a tour shirt or just spiffy duds on.
