I think Carne meant his post as a joke, especially by throwing in the word weird. Stevie Nicks = weird. Get it? ![]()

So was this film actually made in the early 80's? I think it makes the most sense that Stevie's management (and management is notoriously conservative) had problems with the gay themes. Goths are a pretty innocuous bunch, so I can't imagine that being the problem. Still pretty silly, though. But at least this is the only time I can think of that Stevie's or any of the FM management has made a misstep...

![]() The sole reason that it's getting a limited release now is because Sara Rue is the star of ABCs "Less Than Perfect." And because it has the B-movie presence of the one and only Karen Black. ![]()

Just did a search on IMDB and there was actually a nice little review for Gypsy 83. And I recognize those actresses now too! ![]()

People's songs are a commodities. When they are used, there is a fee paid, and though it's negotiable, there is usually a minimum. I don't suspect the movie could afford her music. Hell, "School of Rock" couldn't afford "Never Going Back Again". And that was a big budget Paramount film. However, they could afford Stevie's "Edge of 17". Obviously, it was cheaper, but still not cheap by any means. Also - an artist has to think about their image and how it gets used. If you give a project your blessing by letting them use (or buy) the music, you are in essence, putting a lot on the line. And what do you get in return ? Huge publicity ? Maybe - if the movie has big stars, a big PR machine behind it, or a script that is going to generate a lot of money or excellent critical buzz. However, if it's just a cute little indie movie, not great, but a fun little flick that only a few people will see...you may not want to associate yourself with it. As powerful an image as Stevie has, it, like any other, can be diluted by too much use. Who knows ? I can't imagine Stevie being uptight about two guys making out, or whatever else this movie might contain. But, her management might know of some other project that wants her songs for something similar, or she may not want to condone the whole Night of 1000 Stevies thing. It is hard to say. I wouldn't be surprised if she doesn't know about it - and if she does, it would not surprise me if she wasn't asked directly. The film people may have made the terrible mistake of going to her agent, rather than her or her manager. If the agent knew there wasn't money in it, there was no way it would happen. I'd love to know the real story, but I think there could be numerous reasons the movie didn't get the songs. From a business perspective, a lot of them would make sense. I'll wait until I see the film to decide whether or not the project was worthy of the music. Either way, tiny budget, no big stars, I can see why an artist would say no just for those reasons. |

Yeah, last year. It was a screener video, the ones with the scroll on the bottom saying that it is illegal to have bought it from someone. I have a friend who gets screeners all the time, so I borrowed it from him.
I really enjoyed it. I like Sara Rue (she's cute as a button) and I liked the plot of it. It was awesome to see a movie where the whole thing is built around the Night of 1000 Stevie's. Great flick, but it'll be on video soon, I don't foresee it getting wide distribution.

Anyway, growing up (1980s)I never knew FM was considered "gay music". It wasn't til my mid 20s that I found out that some people consider it gay. "Really?" I never had a clue about it. It just never crossed my mind. I just knew it was good. To this day, about once a year, I'll hear from some high school friend I've not heard from in 15 years, who will say, "I heard a FM song on the radio today, and instantly thought of you, and had to find you". Pardon the ramble... |

You know, I gotta say the only time I've ever seen the gay/Stevie/FM correlation pop up is on the internet...I've been a fan for years...and also know many musicians who also enjoy their music, but no one has ever isolated it as a "gay" thing or whatever...not that it matters (not that there's anything wrong with that
) My brother-in-law always makes it a point, in fact, to tell me about what a sex goddess Stevie was in the 80's for him and his friends...all straight males who listened/watched and drooled over Stevie and Christine....As for Gypsy83...it's a whole movie about the night of 1,000 Stevies with NO Stevie music at all? Those of you who have seen it - how does that work? I really wanna see btw..and think it's about damn time they're releasing it... |
